Book Description
Cowinner of the Golden Bear at the recent Berlin Film Festival, Spirited Away is the latest fantastical creation by animation master Hayao Miyazaki. A fabulous ghost-infested adventure full of action, suspense, bizarre creatures, and compelling human characters, it is the pinnacle of animated fantasy and depicts the transformation of a sullen little girl into a powerful being. This lavish coffee-table book features artwork, stills, sketches, storyboards, and illustrations from the movie, a Disney release in September 2002. "Miyazaki has done it again, folks. Is anyone surprised?" Anime Digital
Customer Reviews:
I wish there were more than 5 stars.......2007-07-16
It's Hayao Miyazaki again. What can I say. One of the most amazing animated film ever. And book explores so much of the movie. Amazing learning and reference book. Every animation/comic lover must have it.
The Art of Miyazaki.......2007-05-13
The reson why I purchased this book is because of the art inside. It brought me back to the movie Spirited Away.. I ordered the book with a hardcover.. That's nice to have. The product is such fine quality. I am proud to have it and share the Art of Miyazaki with others. I know more about Miyazaki after purchasing this book.
incredible.......2006-12-02
i dont know what to say aside from the fact that miyazakisan is an incredible artist/storyboard creator. and bravo to everyone at studio ghibli
Wonderful images.......2006-07-25
If you like the movie Spirited away, and are the least interested in art, you will enjoy this book. Even the tenth time I pick up the book, I get stuck just turning the pages and looking at the wonderful images.
Maybe 50% of the images are directly from the film; the rest are sketches, background images, concept arts, and similar. In many cases, the images are complemented by brief texts written by people involved in making the movie.
The last section of the book contains the screenplay of the movie, and is basically free of images.
In my opinion, the screenplay could be left out for some more art, and the written comments are often not that interesting.
Comparing this book to The Art of Howl's Moving Castle, I find this book much richer: After writing down at least ten Spirited images I would like to put on my wall, I skimmed through the art of Howl's. The result was, surprisingly, that none of the Howl's images seemed that good when compared to Spirited Away.
(The reason for this is probably not superior art, but art that is better fit to non-moving pictures. And more time in making the movie, I suppose.)
Anyway; if you're thinking about bying this book, you can be sure that you will enjoy it. Price is another issue, but you will get something for your money.
Nice, but..........2005-04-09
I'm a fan of the Ghibli animators, I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. This kind of book is a must have for anyone who is in the same situation that I am.
There is only one problem: compared to the original edition, in Japanese, the material used in the cover is different (VIZ used hard cover, against Tokuma Shoten's soft cover with canvas-textured paper) what changes the sense of this book, putting it onto a higher level - but that's only a design book for animation.

Customer Reviews:
Poor quality printing........2007-05-10
Just a warning -- these are the flimsiest books you will ever see in your life. We bought them for our library and they fell apart like tissue paper after ONE use by a careful patron. The publisher should be ashamed at putting out such a poor quality product.
Most beautiful book- Spirited Away.......2005-12-06
This book is absolotly gorgeous. It captures the pictures from the actual movie. The story is the same with the movie. I strongly reccomend people watching or reading this book. I was inspired by my best friend, Annie. It shows how an real 10 years old girl react to this kind of situation. Miyazaki creates different texture from all the others.
A wonderful little book.......2004-03-08
Poor 10-year-old Chihiro Ogino is so unhappy that her family is moving to a new home. But, things go from bad to weird, when her father takes a wrong turn, and finds what he believes to be an abandoned theme park. When night falls, Chihiro finds herself in a strange and threatening world of magic and weird creatures. Rescued by a young boy named Haku, he tells Chihiro what she must do to survive and rescue her parents.
This wonderful little book is the work of Hayao Miyazaki, one of Japan's premiere animators. A great thing about this book is that it is printed so as to be read from back-to-front, right-to-left, in the Japanese style, helping to give the reader the feeling of entering another world. I really enjoyed this book, and found the story to be nothing short of wonderful. I highly recommend this book.
English Language Learners Love Miyazaki.......2003-07-19
My ELL students go wild over these books, and the back-to-front reading format doesn't seem to affect their usual English reading lessons. I introduced this set into my classroom library this past year. I imagine having seen the film first was helpful for most of my students, but any enticement to read has to be worth something. It certainly is from my standpoint as a teacher. These books are beautiful to look at and obviously fun to read. They remind me of the old Tintin adventure books which helped teach many overseas students to read English a generation ago.
Beautiful Anime Comic..........2003-06-10
A beautiful adaptation of the anime. Makes a GREAT gift. Too bad there is no box set or something, I think that would sell REALLY well...
Anyway, the color is just beautiful and its a great way to relive the action and emotion of the original anime, or for people who didn't see it to see it for the first time.

Book Description
Knight Tristan de Barre and his men were murdered in 1292, their souls cursed to roam Dreadmoor Castle forever.
Forensic archeologist Andi Monroe is excavating the site and studying the legend of a medieval knight who disappeared. But although she's usually rational, Andi could swear she's met the handsome knight's ghost.
Until she finds a way to lift the curse, though, love doesn't stand a ghost of a chance.
Customer Reviews:
Ok.. not great.......2007-09-12
It was good for a debut book. I won't go into the plot, that's been done. I will say it just didn't do it for me.
I would like to have had more substance in the characters rather then detailed descriptions each and every time one showed up. How many times do we need to be told his eyes are sapphire blue? And the words powerful and passing were used way too much to describe attributes and emotions. The story slowed way down in the middle, and the end wasn't all that I'd hoped. This book would have been great as part of an anthology.
All that being said, it is worth reading. And the secondary characters were great. Although I won't be putting this one on the keeper shelf, I will read this author again.
This is a must read book! I didn't want it to end!.......2007-09-03
I would have given the book more stars had they been available.Wow! The sexual tension between Tristan and Andi almost singed the pages. The story was fast past and the romance makes you wish you could meet a ghost of your own.
It was okay.......2007-07-13
First, I'd like to say that I didn't dislike this book. For a debut, it was an admirable effort. It's difficult, even for seasoned authors, to keep the pace and storyline consistent. And though the plot was a little sparse, and the tale lagged in the middle a bit, it certainly wasn't the worst thing I've read recently. It kept my attention until the end, and that's nothing to sneeze at.
That being said, there were several detractors that kept me from really relishing the story. First, it was repetitive. Words, phrases, character descriptions--not even a variation among them. She was passing lovely, passing beautiful, passing this, passing that. He often addressed her as a cheeky wench, a saucy wench, or just plain old wench. It wore thin very quickly. Also, because of the inclusion of the prologue, the story of Tristan's death was repeated (unnecessarily) two or more times, which took away from the immediacy and intrigue in the beginning. Second, there were a couple flubs that probably should have been thought through more clearly, or caught in editing. For instance, Tristan didn't know what the "new-fangled hose" she was wearing were called (jeans), yet he and his knights regularly watched television. How could he not know? Did he never catch a Levis commercial? Or, how about the gasoline-powered generator Andi was using in the dungeon. With no ventilation. In a medieval castle lit by a myriad of torches. How did she not poison herself, or blow the whole darned thing to smithereens? And lastly, the conflict of the story was stretched to a near breaking point. What little action was thrown in throughout the novel seemed to have next to nothing to do with the actual plot, the mystery wasn't much of a mystery, and the conclusion was fairly anticlimactic. Fortunately, the story did not rely on these elements too heavily.
The love unfolding between Tristan and Andi was what drove the story, and it really was an interesting premise. I liked that the leads could not just hop into bed together to scratch an itch, though I agree with the reviewer who said it went on that way a little long. Especially--*SPOLIER ALERT*--after the curse was lifted, and Tristan was mortal again. (How that happened, by the way, was never explained.) He'd waited seven hundred years to touch a woman, yet he insisted they wait longer--until they were married--to sleep together, so that their one love scene came at the very end of the book and seemed mostly rushed. After all that build-up, I was expecting much more than that.
All in all, it was an okay book, though one that I probably won't be holding on to. I think this author has a lot of promise; I'd just love to see a little more polish and depth to her writing.
A good start.......2007-06-29
Spirited Away was a very pleasant surprise. I picked it up at the bookstore hoping it would be good and I did enjoy it. I thought all the characters were very interesting. To my delight, none of the characters grated on my nerves. Too often, part way through a book, somebody does something that really turns me on them. But, that didn't happen here. If anything, the characters got better. I especially enjoyed Tristan (well, yeah!!) and Jameson. Jameson's interactions with Miss Kate were very funny. I thought all the secondary characters were just great. The author's descriptions of Tristan were intriguing and that brings me to my only quibble with this book.
I would have liked to see the ghost issue resolved a little quicker than it was. You have this hunky knight and he can't do anything but the meaningful glances for the entire book. I just thought he was such a dynamic character, I would have liked to see him as a "real" man a little longer.
This was a book I did like. I will probably keep it for awhile, at least
to read about other characters from this one in future books. But, I have to say that the excerpt from the next book didn't thrill me. I am having trouble imagining a book with what seems to be a dead woman as the lead. I guess I'll have to wait to see how that turns out.
But, back to Spirited Away. I liked it, but I would have liked to see a little more spice. It was almost a young adult read, in my opinion. Good, but needed a little more excitement. I had read Kurland's book about Kendrick before and I liked it. But, I liked to feel and atmosphere of this book better.
Too Close to Kurland for Comfort.......2007-06-08
I absolutely agree with the comment comparing Miles' book to Stardust of Yesterday by Lynn Kurland. From the aging butler to the companion knights to scenes in the village, this book is a virtual rip-off of Kurland's book - and it doesn't compare favorably. If Kurland has endorsed this copy-cat I am truly surprised. Meanwhile to those who enjoyed Spirited Away - read the original - Kendrick is sexier and written with a lot more character development; also you can actually sense the chemistry between the leads. Ms Miles has some talent - surely she find an original idea or two.

Spirited Away.......2003-04-25
This amazing movie should be shared with all friends and family. I was truly "Spirited Away" by the outstanding characters and wonderful setting. A touching story that you will want to watch over and over again.
Amazing Movie, good book.......2003-04-07
We saw this movie a couple of times in the theater, and plan on buying the DVD when it comes out this month. In the meantime, we came across this book at the bookstore, and got it for our daughter. As is typical of books that are put together from children's films, the writing is a bit simple and assumes that you know the story from the film. If you haven't seen the film, the book is a bit choppy. That having been said, it was worth the price of the book to have the beautiful pictures in a book, so that we could look at them whenever we want to. It is very nice to have this book to enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
The Sister and the Golden Seal.......2003-05-08
Now that we are past the middle of this story (this is volume for of 5) the action picks up quite a bit. No Face, the spirit that young Sen let in earlier has turned into a disaster, determined to eat whatever food the bath house has to offer and paying in showers of gold. On the down side, however, the spirit has a tough time differentiating staff from the food, throwing everything into chaos.
As this is going on, Sen sees a white dragon being chased across the sky by paper birds. This is Haku, the young mage, who is badly wounded in his efforts to steal magic. Surprisingly, Sen shows fierce loyalty to her friend, courageously facing the dangers of the bathhouse in order to save his life. The girl has come a long way from the spoiled child who first happened into this strange work.
When I first found this series, the film was still unavailable to US audiences. As such they were the only option for English speakers who wanted to see Miyazaki's latest work and get a sense of the flow of the film. They do this quite well for what is essentially a still medium, spending a lot of frames building a chain of movement. This is done with cels from the film, so the normal comic approach doesn't prevail. When I look at the illustration, I think of a parent reading a book to a child and pointing to a string of pictures as, say, a dragon twists and loops in the sky.
Indeed, this set is perfect for that purpose. It is also a delightful memento of a wonderful film. Miyazaki's imagination is always stunning and unique. There are many good anime artists, but fewer great artists who happen to do anime. Film or no film, I intend to own the entire set.
Beautiful!.......2003-03-29
This is another GREAT book of Miyazaki's. The pictures are beautiful... the story is cute... what more can I say?
"If you forget it, you'll never find your way home".......2003-03-27
Imagine being a typical, slightly self-centered 10-year-old girl, and suddenly finding yourself the only human employee at the Abura Ya, a bathhouse for the spirits. Your parents have turned into pigs, and if you cannot find a way, they will eventually become snacks for customers of the resort. Your employer is a giant old woman named Yubaba, who drives a hard bargain and intends to make you work every moment.
This is Chihiro Ogino's lot in the manga version of Hayao Miyazaki's 'Spirited Away.' Certainly a tough role for an adult to deal with, one cannot help but admire Chihiro (now called Sen) for her fierce determination. In the world of Abura Ya she manages to find friends like Haku, a teenage boy with magical powers, and Lin, the co-worker who looks after Chihiro and helps her snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
In this third volume Chihiro starts her job as a bath attendant, performing the backbreaking labor of scrubbing floors and baths and waiting on customers. When an awesome stink spirit shows up for a wash, no one wants to go near it. Naturally, Chihiro gets stuck with the job. What ensues is a surprise for all as Chihiro discovers that she has strange friends in even stranger places.
Some notes. These beautifully colored manga are done in Japanese order [right to left, top to bottom]. At first, this is a bit confusing, but after a while, it gets to be fun. In addition, it preserves the effect of the original manga page layouts, which really is the best way to present them. Japanese sound effects are left as is, but a translation guide is included.
"Aren't you even going to knock?".......2003-03-21
Having little or no will power, I have succumbed to the temptation to pick up more of these little specialty manga created from the cells of Hayao Miyazaki's latest anime creation, 'Spirited Away.' This film has been a runaway bestseller in Japan, and is due for release in the US shortly. When I bought the first volume as a novelty, my greatest concern was that the books would 'spoil' the plot. However, after reading two volumes, I find I'm even more interested in seeing the film, which looks every bit as remarkable as 'Princess Mononoke,' another Miyazaki hit.
These are the story of Chihiro Ogino, a young girl whose parents have inadvertently wandered into a bathhouse for spirits and been turned into pigs. Chihiro is determined to rescue them and discovers that she must find a job in the bathhouse or suffer the same fate of her parents. This volume is the story of her quest for employment, starting with the spider-like Kamaji who runs the hot water system to the giant Yubaba who is the matron of the resort. One has to admire Chihiro's determination, even though she is actually a bit irritating in a little girl way. Of course, I might be a bit self-centered and panicky if I found myself in the comic version of Motel Hell.
The styling is classic Miyazaki, with great work on the expressions of both the human and non-human characters. These last come in every shape and type imaginable. The dialog is minimalist. Often, the plot is moved forward by the visual story, full of both menace and sight gags. Another thing I like is, since the sound effects are in Japanese, someone has gone to the immense trouble of providing a frame-by-frame translation of them. Just the thing for an adult who wants to read these aloud to a child.
One warning. These manga done in Japanese order [right to left, top to bottom]. At first, this is a bit confusing, but after a while, it gets to be fun. In addition, it preserves the effect of the original manga page layouts, which really is the best way to present them. If these manga aren't over-distributed, then they may very well be eminently collectable.

impressive first time novel.......2006-07-02
An enchanting paranormal romance from a Debut author makes for a wonderful entry into Romance for Pamela Labud. I am sure we shall be hearing more from this talented writer. I saw another review posted that it's a double-RITA nominee. VERY IMPRESSIVE for a first time writer.
Captain William Markham was falsely accused of treason, engineered by Richard Barrons, a thoroughly nasty chap. He cannot repute the charges and is hanged, and with his last words vowed his innocence and swears revenge. Only how can a dead man accomplish this? Through an amulet. Lady Arianna Halverson possesses the power to talk to the dead, and through the power of the amulet, Markham is able to seek her out, and not only work to seek his revenge, but spoil more dastardly deeds Barrons is about to work against Arianna's family. Barrons shoots Arianna's brother Nathan and holds them hostage on a small island. William is delighted to learn that his daughter Katherine is also on the island. He thought Barrons had drowned her. As Arianna and William fall in love, the tales pushes toward a suspenseful conclusion.
To say anymore would spoil your enjoyment of this wonderful ghostly story. It a dark tale of the power of love, and Labud instantly builds a solid premise that had this reader believing all things would possible when love is at stake.
NO WONDER IT'S A R.I.T.A. DOUBLE-NOMINEE!!.......2006-07-02
I just finished reading Spirited Away by Pamela Labud, and all I can say is wow! WOW! I don't normally read historical fiction anymore and I wasn't planning on spending my afternoon glued in place but that's exactly what happened. Spirited Away is a double nominee for R.I.T.A. in Best First Book and Best Paranormal - as judged by other writers of the Romance Writers of America Association! Well, with a recommend like that, I just had to see what all the excitement was about. I was curious and I have to say I'm VERY glad I was.
Will Markham is a dead man - literally. The opening is one-of-a-kind. Then we move to Arianna - who is visiting with dead people. Oh my. Exactly what Will needs. It was an intriguing beginning that had me hooked. I didn't move. I couldn't. I wanted Will to get justice and Arianna was his only hope. Little did we all know. What an emotional, poignant read -- all the way to the ending, where the suspense really ratchets up. Oh my. Great beginning, wonderful thread throughout, and a surprise ending! What more can I want? Spirited Away is a wonderous debut - exactly as Hannah Howell said on the cover. Wow!
3 stars says it all.......2006-07-01
I just love a good romance, and I thought for sure this one was going to be it. It wasn't. That was surprising. The premise was wonderful - a man hanged for a crime he didn't commit, trapped in a spectral plane and then attached to the heroine because she's psychic. Really great beginning. Some really great passages. And then it happened. The writing got sporadic. Sometimes it was pulling me in and keeping me glued in place. Other times, I was going ... huh? So many ways this book falls apart. If I put my finger on why this romance is just so-so, I'd have to say it was the oddities of the plot. It's weird. Uneven. There's a marriage forced on the heroine without much notice that it's coming. And she just agrees? I didn't like that at all. Then there's the island scenes. They just don't come across as realistic. They don't. I was skimming at that point, though. I might have missed something. Who knows? I got to the point that I almost didn't care to see if there was a HEA. So many oddities... Will I read another book by this author? Sadly - no.
Enchanting Paranormal.......2006-04-10
Not since Linda Lael Miller's Pirate have I enjoyed a paranormal romance more. From the very first pages the reader is swept away in this story of hate and vengeance that is conquered by love. Captain William Markham has lost all, including his very life, by the evil Richard Barrons. Hung for false charges of treason Will vows on his last breath for vengeance. His spirit is drawn to the magical amulet owned by the beautiful Lady Arianna Halverson. Able to talk to the spirit world and help solve their problems, Will seeks out Arianna's help through the amulet. Little do they both know that Richard Barrons is also working to destroy her family and steal her brother Nathan's wealth. Barrons shoots her brother Nathan, who becomes an invalid from his wound, and uses Arianna's love for Nathan to force a marriage. Barrons plots and works more evil in England while holding Nathan and Arianna prisoner on an island. Through the power of the amulet Will is able to remain with Arianna and together they work to destroy Barrons. On arriving to the island they discover that Will's daughter Katherine, he thought drowned by Barrons, is still alive. Together without fully realizing it, they become a unique little family unit. As their love grows spiritually, Will and Arianna are able to have brief periods of physical love. Will begins to see that his love for Arianna and Katherine is more important than his vengeance. The intrigue builds to a ending full of surprises. Pamela Labud has the talent to make the spirit world seem real with warm and loving characters that capture the heart of the reader within the first few pages. Soon you are caught up in their story, cheering them on. I was enchanted. I can't wait for more from this author.
Spirited Away.......2005-04-25
Once Captain Will Markham has been unjustly hung, all that stands in Barron's way are two siblings; Arianna and Ethan Halverson. Once he marries Arianna though, he will have access to Ethan, whose death will then be ensured. The evil man had not counted on the fact that some men just can't let a little thing like death stop them. Will's spirit pauses between life and death. Determined to have his revenge on his killer, Will uses a magical stone to locate Arianna, who is a gifted medium. With it, he has the ability to be solid. Now, saving Arianna and her brother becomes the focus of his life for he has come to love her, though she is married to his enemy. It is, however, a love that can not be. Once Barron is defeated, Will knows he will pass into death again. He might be able to save the woman he loves, but he can't save her from that pain.
*** Impossible love that defies death itself is sure to win the hearts of fans everywhere. While in most ghost romanes, the hero and heroine's lives are separated by decades or centuries, this author has them sharing the same lifetime. This is an author to watch. ***
