Nothing Else is Worth Knowing.......2005-01-09
I just got this book and let me just say that the words inside are some of the finest ever put between two covers. It's all so informative. So much so that one may think that it is perhaps, too informative, but I doubt it. It's perfect. You'll find some of the most obscure and some of the most well-known facts, on the same page. Incredible.
The main thing I like about this book, is that it's much different from these types of timeline books. Rather than saying "this happened, then this happened", it does that and provides much more information by giving background stories of many of the artists, and also providing a lot about the impact the person or band had. Also, it's great how the devotes entire pages to show the significance of some important events in rock history. This does a lot to show why some of the greatest bands of all time are considered some of the greatest band of all time. So after reading this, you'll never wonder why again. The bold type really helps out too, if you're looking for someone imparticular. Also if you're a Beatles fan, the only thing you're not likely to find out is how many times they went to the bathroom each week. So, in short this is the rock n' roll book I've seen and I highly recommend it. Anything not in here probably isn't worth knowing.
An Ultimate Music Box.......2004-11-20
I fell in love with this book from the very first time that i put my eyes on this page of amazon, but, on that time it had a limited edition and it was sould out. I`ve waited more than 3 months for him to arrive but then it was impossible... One day, by hazard i found it on Fnac in Portugal, it was the only one of it`s kind so i bought it imediately and must tell you that it is really music to your ears to read this amazing book. It is the best book i`ve ever seen about music and i have more than five encyclopedias about the subject so believe it when i say that this book really entertains you with the good and consistent information, the beautiful pictures about the artists, the design, the uk and us charts and much more... From Elvis to Abba, from Eminen to Norah Jones, from Sinead O`Connor to Alanis, from Celine to Mariah, from The Who to Nirvana, from Notorious BIG to Massive Attack, from The Ronnettes to Take That, from Brenda Lee and Janis Joplin to Britney Spears and Christina it really has it all !!!
Valiant effort but not perfect........2004-02-24
This is probably the best book of its type to date. But it is not without it's problems. The first is that both of its authors are British. Hence it skews to the right of the Atlantic. Not that I don't feel myself, that British Rock has produced some of the best acts of all time, but for instance there are more entries on and photos of Gary Glitter than Alice Cooper. Gary Glitter? This is just one example. Some one in a review here mentioned the happy inclusion of Yes. If you look through the entries for that band you'll find at least Two mistakes saying that Fragile was their third album, (it was the fourth) and that Owner of a Lonely Heart is from Big Generator (it wasn't). This may seem like nitpicking but these are just the equivalent of what might be found on one page. It makes one wonder how many more of the presented "facts" are not trustworthy? You expect more from music critics on the voting board of the Rock & roll Hall of Fame. In the end though it's a valiant effort they undertook, and I'm glad I bought the book. It could/should have been a five star book though.
Best coffee table book ever? One of them!.......2004-01-31
This book is a "wow"! I've never seen such a huge volume of information categorized year by year in such detail. What is impressive about this book is how it is able to bridge the gaps between the generations and make them seemingly come togther (Beatles reference!) to make Rock 'n Roll seem like a continuing saga. I dislike most 90s music (and 00s music), seeing it as crass, rude, commerical, lacking heart, overly vulgar and shocking. I hate the fact that Eminem has to share a spot with other great artists from the past, but maybe that's the whole point of rock 'n roll. Our parents didn't like our music and THEIR parents didn't like their music and so on. You can see the controversy brewing in rock from the time it began. But rock is more than just controversy. Artists and genres of all stripes get the billing here. Some see rock as chart oriented, so there's a chronological listing of each #1 for the US and the UK charts, but also gives ample coverage to artists who mainly stayed off the charts but were nonetheless hugely influential. Rock is inherently chaotic but what I love about this book is it brings order out of chaos. From todays preteens and teens to 20somethings and 30something GenXers to Baby Boomers and even graying 60-something beat generationers will all want to spent hours leafing through this fun and informative book. Rock on!
YES!!!.......2004-01-07
ANY ROCK & ROLL HISTORY IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART THAT REFERENCES "YES", PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED BANDS OF ALL TIME. LISTEN TO THE VIRTUOSO MUSICIANSHIP AND CREATIVITY ON THEIR "TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS" FROM 1974 OR "CLOSE THE THE EDGE" FROM 1972. HOW THESE ALBUMS WERE OVERLOOKED IN ROLLING STONE'S (MAGAZINE) RECENT ISSUE LISTING THEIR TOP 500 ALBUMS OF ALL TIME IS BEYOND ME. ALSO, BE CAREFUL READING THIS BOOK IN BED....IF YOU BEGIN TO FALL ASLEEP, THE BOOK WILL KNOCK YOU OUT IF IT HITS YOU IN THE HEAD. THIS GIVES LITERAL MEANING TO THE TERM "HEAVY READING". ANYWAY, PLEASE ENJOY.

Book Description
An unprecedented event is sweeping America: 10,000 baby boomers turn 50 every day! Many expect this aging generation to become an albatross around America's neckoverwhelming the health care system, bankrupting Social Security, and retreating to retirement villages where they'll refuse to support social services with their taxes. In Never Too Old to Rock and Roll, Tom Hardin offers a different perspective: Life after 50 can be the best years yet!
Since the 1960s, baby boomers have created radical change. Whether it's voting rights or civil rights, relating to kids or in the workplace, baby boomers approach life differently. According to Hardin, how this generation approaches aging will also be different.
"Baby boomers are expected to live longer than any generation before them and they're realizing they have vast options when it comes to their quality of life," said Hardin. "By practicing a revolutionary concept called personal wealth management, they can achieve total wealth and abundance in every area of lifephysical, emotional, and especially financial."
If you're looking for powerful, practical ways to make life after 50 your best years yet, get ready to rock and roll! This book will permanently change the way America looks at aging.

Book for All Ages and Good Insight to Life - Young and Old!.......2005-07-20
Tom has written a great book! It is for anyone who wants road map for financial freedom and the joy of retirement. As I read this book I kept thinking how much it applied to all ages. I am retired now and Tom gave me some insight about spending and enjoying the fruits of my efforts. I have missed a lot of joy if the "Kids" get to spend the "fruits" instead of me and my Wife. Bill
Life-affirming and goal-oriented.......2005-07-10
Author Tom Hardin is a financial planner, but this book offers much more than ways on how to increase your wealth. This is a positive, upbeat, life-affirming book that encourages readers to plan not only for their financial futures, but also for lives that are emotionally and spiritually fulfilling, and as physically healthy as possible.
He offers examples of people who have planned carefully and thought about what they wanted to do with their lives, and who are now living the best lives possible. This is NOT a book of vague generalizations. Hardin offers specific suggestions and guidelines, and encourages the reader to think deeply about what s/he wants out of life. Then, he says, act on those goals!
You can't pick this book up without catching some of Hardin's optimism and energy. And I intend to pick this book up and peruse it many more times!
A Great Book for All Ages.......2005-06-06
This book really hits the nail on the head for anyone hoping to live a long and healty life. Tom covers three important topics, vision, health and investing. I really liked the stories of real people who are still rocking and rolling after all these years. If you believe your best years are ahead of you, buy this book and start living a life you love, at any age.
A Real Wake-Up for Those 50 and Older!.......2005-05-20
So true...while generations past wound down at 50; the baby boomers and all after have too much and to long to live to even think about it. Winding up and making the second 50 years the best ever is a religion all need to follow. "Never Too Old" puts in all in perspective in a very comprehensive, quick reading book. T. Ottinger, Redondo Beach, CA
Must read for financial and life planning !.......2005-01-25
My wife handed me the book and asked that I also read it. I am 41, not 50 ,and think it is a must read for anyone planning their future. Don't wait until 50 to read it. The author addresses more than just financial planning issues. He asks you to think about the "big picture"; what you want your future to look like financially, physically, and mentally - how to be healthy in order to enjoy your future and to make sure you are doing something you enjoy when you get there.

Big Beat Heat.......2006-09-24
This is a good book about the life of legendary DJ Alan Freed. His personal life, as a radio and tv host and as promotor of his own concerts around the east coast.
His failures seem to have caused his downfall, a terrible riot during a show in Boston for which he was indicted and also payola, receiving money to play records. Both cases cost him a lot of money and pain.
He was married three times, unfortunately the last two wives refused to talk to the author. Jackson says that his third wife Inga was also a heavy drinker, which did not help at all. He died in 1965, only 44 years old
explains a lot!.......2006-05-12
I really enjoyed this book. Several personal stories about Alan Freed provide insight into his life. The writer does a good job of explaining the historical events/context that surrounded Freed's life. It's a shame Freed didn't live longer to see what he contributed to popular music.

Book Description
Long before Elvis Presley entered Sam Phillips's Sun Records studio in 1954, rock 'n' roll was being performed and recorded by the likes of Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, the Clovers, the Dominoes, the Midnighters, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Wanda Jackson, and Johnny Ace. More than just a series of shrewd and evocative portraits of these and sixteen other performers, this book is also a paean to a forsaken time of relentless excess, sudden ruin, and fierce music. For this edition, the author has contributed a new listing of recent CD reissues. From 1945 to 1955, from Chinese hillbillies to Elvis's long-lost twin brother, here are the Unsung Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll.

The Best!.......2006-10-13
Nicky kicks *ss with this one. Simply the best book about early rock and roll and who influenced the music we love. Lots of great stories about people you've never heard of. This book will make you go out and buy cds from Europe where much of the artist's music is available in public domain. Or maybe you'll be searching on Amazon. Either way, you'll love it! A great read from a great writer.
Informative, hysterically funny, a great read.......2000-02-10
This may be, quite simply, the best non-fiction book on music. I agree with his main point -- in rock and roll, there is nothing new under the sun; everything truly innovative was done by someone over half a century ago (and there's a good chance they were drunk at the time). What Tosches does is tell these stories is a way that will have you laughing out loud and running to the CD store to pick up as much of this music as you can find.
The Rosetta Stone of Early Rock and Roll.......1998-04-26
The best book about the history of Rock and Roll I have ever come across. My goal is to find and hear musis by each of the artists featured in the book, including Ming & Ling, the Chinese Hillbillies, bless their inscrutable souls. The opening paragraphs in the chapter on Big Joe Turner are worth the price of admission itself.
Inspired tales of early rockers.......1998-02-27
Tosches captures the energy of a nascent musical form with wit and no small amount of fury. The Merman chapter alone is worth the price of admission, opening new avenues of appreciation. Seek this one out.

Book Description
Guided by Voices was one of the most popular indie-rock bands of the 1990s. Critics internationally have lauded the band’s brain trust, Robert Pollard, as a once-in-a-generation artist. Pollard has been compared by The New York Times to Mozart, Rossini, and Paul McCartney (in the same sentence) and everyone from P. J. Harvey, Radiohead, R.E.M., the Strokes, and U2 has sung his praises and cited his music as an influence. But it all started rather prosaically when Pollard, a fourth-grade teacher in his early thirties from Dayton, Ohio, began recording songs with drinking buddies in his basement. James Greer, an acclaimed music writer and former Spin editor, enjoys a unique advantage in having played in the band for two years. This personal connection grants him unparalleled insight and complete access to the workings of Pollard’s muse.
Customer Reviews:
Robert Pollard and his Band! .......2007-03-01
I was excited to read this book since being turned onto Guided By Voices about 5 years ago. I was reluctant in a way to read this because a bandmate of mine who is the biggest GBV fan I know said after he read it he hated Robert Pollard. I was taken back a bit but after reading this book I can see why. On the other hand I can see why he was the way he is and why he's the songwriting genius he is today. The book should be called "Robert Pollard and his Band of Friends or Enemies." The guy was a stuck up jerk at times but did things his own way and if it wasn't done his way you're out. Its a great book to get an insight from band members, label heads and desriptions of shows from beginning to GBV's very end. A great band and book depicting what they were about during recording, rehearsals and live gigs. Who was with it and who wasn't. Most of all its a look into the life of Robert Pollard and his loytalty to his friends and the integrity of the band whoever was in it at at the time. If your fan of the band check it out. Only downfall is the 30 pages waisted on the list numerous GBV records and other releases. Overkill if you ask me.
No better coverage is available........2007-01-07
Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard has been involved in the rock scene for over twenty years, has been compared to Paul McCartney to Rossini, and has staged live rock performances which stand out from the crowd. Written with exclusive cooperation from Pollard, GUIDED BY VOICES: A BRIEF HISTORY delves into his music and the vast circle of rock musicians which have contributed to his development. From the band's many incarnations to Pollard's constantly changing sound, no better coverage is available.

Human amusements.......2006-03-09
This is a pretty good book, sez this non-obsessed GBV fan. Greer's intro was too cute by half, and fortunately he tones his writing down a bit for most of the book. Unlike other reviewers, I found Greer's fawning was balanced by many examples showing that Robert Pollard is a flawed individual. I enjoyed the contributions by Pollard's son. I didn't think much of the analysis of songs because Bob's answer for half of them is that they were about nothing. One correction for the author: The Denver show at which Buffalo fell off the stage was not held at night or in a club; it was held in late afternoon in a parking lot. I was there.
a nice resource for the unobsessed.......2006-03-02
It is interesting to read the different reviews here. I think the criticisms reveal more about the critics than the book. I agree with the following shortcomings: not enough about the musical process, approach, and details of album making. (Bee 1000 is a masterpiece and it is good to hear from Pollard's website that a scholar is devoting a single work to the album.) Even if Greer is a "yesman" as a reviewer suggests, he still provides fruitful insights and titillating minutae that the lay-listener enjoys (see the praising reviews). Of course, the worshippers and indie-obsessor's already know all of these minutae and so are rather demanding. So, another book, less "inside," is certainly in order; one that reveals more about the specifics of Pollard's musical process. But give Greer a break! He's provided a nice resource for the unobsessed.
Sigh.......2006-02-21
"Hunting Accidents" is a poorly written, poorly researched and poorly structured disappointment from a sychophant former band member. Robert Pollard is a great songwriter and musician, and based on a handful of encounters I've had with the man, a very nice guy. But he is not Jesus Christ. Whether James Greer is unaware of this this, or Pollard's camp wouldn't allow a more balanced portrait, I don't know. But the sickening level of butt-kissing on display here makes it impossible to take even the good bits seriously.
Not that I need dirt neccesarily, though the trail of ex-friends Pollard has left in his wake suggest a selfish streak Greer is unwilling to follow. I'd just like more information on Pollard's art and less about his group of jockish drinking buddies back in Dayton. (Seriously, Jim, are you trying to impress us with your seat at the cool kid's table?)
How does Bob write songs? How often does he write them? What inspires him? How did he adjust to touring after living in one place for so long? How will he approach his art as his 50th birthday looms? I don't know, because Greer doesn't delve into these (seemingly) important topics with any depth. Also, why take Pollard's "I'm not an alcoholic, I'm a drunk" fuzzy logic at face value? Shouldn't a biographer push a little more, and try to find out what lies beneath the subject's claims?
Have I mentioned how poorly this is written? Never have I read a book where the author tries so pathetically to justify his own cliches. (Heres's a tip, Jim: Don't mock your crappy writing, improve on it in the editing process.)
Again, I think GBV is a great band. But this book is indicative of how Pollard surrounds himself with yesmen rather than honest critics that will prod him to do better.

Where rock scribes are concerned, you've got provocateurs of the Lester Bangs school, academics of the Greil Marcus variety, and the nuts-and-bolts sorts who, while perhaps less colorful wordsmiths, excel at capturing their subjects by putting them at ease. Early Rolling Stone contributor/editor Ben Fong-Torres may be the best known and most durable member of that third school. Not Fade Away gathers 34 Fong-Torres profiles and interviews ranging from Woodstock-era pieces centering on Sly Stone and Janis Joplin to '80s articles on Eddie Murphy and Tom Hanks. Despite the occasional foray into film writing, Not Fade Away centers around rock & roll. Solid journalist that he is, Fong-Torres can stretch from James Brown to Neil Diamond, from Bob Dylan to Iggy Pop--all without straining. Vignettes update and add color to Fong-Torres's out-of-the-archives articles. --Steven Stolder
Book Description
From 1969 to 1981, Ben Fong-Torres was one of the first "star" writers on staff at Rolling Stone - the "scruffy rock journal" that metamorphosed into one of the most powerful voices of a generation. Now in this fascinating book, Fong-Torres revisits his most intriguing celebrity interviews and profiles, and - for the first time - tells the revealing stories behind the stories, the stars, his writing process, and life at Rolling Stone.
Customer Reviews:
Check the Table of Contents Before Purchasing.......2007-02-18
Fong-Torres is a talented writer, but readers who are interested in rock 'n' roll history may wish to skip this book's chapters on people like Diane Keaton, Neil Diamond, Annie Leibovitz, Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy, and (!) Rodney Dangerfield. (Steve Martin's is worth reading, however.)
Not to worry, though, this volume does contain actual interviews and profiles with music industry folks like Ricky Nelson, Three Dog Night, and Dick Clark. You can probably see the problem with this book's title and cover image by now. And you might understand why I got excited when I came to the book's piece on Iggy Pop. Unfortunately, it was just a two-page description of an appearance Iggy did at a Tower Records.
Drat.
The Best of Ben Fong-Torres.......2001-06-23
A better title would be the Best of Ben Fong-Torres. This book is a collection of articles he wrote for "Rolling Stone". Some of the people written about in this book are Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Jackson 5, Janis Joplin, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, The Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, Santna, Ricky Nelson, and many others. What really makes the book worth reading is that he gives information on what he had to get the interview and what happened after. Sometimes, the behind the scenes information are as good as or even better than the article.
Title Says It All.......2001-04-30
If you weren't around in the 70s, or you want to "relive" this era, Ben Fong-Torres' book is a good place to start. It's a collection of many of his Rolling Stone feature articles, along with a brief update of the personalities involved. Having "come of age" in the 70s, it brought back memories of my own and it gave me insights into some of the most famous rock personalities of the 70s and early 1980s.
Fong-Torres has an excellent writing style and "captures" a little bit about what made a lot of these musicians "tick." His articles are enjoyable to read or re-read if you've seen them before. While part of the title (A BackStage Pass to 20 Years of Rock n Roll) may seem cliched, it fits here. Fong-Torres in his Rolling Stone articles managed to catch a glimpse of an era now long gone.
A little disappointing but maybe it was my fault.......2000-10-19
I bought this book after seeing Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous". That was an exceptional movie and I thought I would relive the era through Ben fong-Torres, who was featured in the movie.
The book is really a reprint of many of his stories in Rolling Stone which the reviews probably stated and I didn't focus on. I would have preferred his story of being close to the Rock and Roll scene. Reading some of the articles that were over 20 years old became somewhat boring and outdated. I did learn quite a bit in some of the stories and Fong-Torres does provide some narrative on each story although it is limited. Overall though, I'd take a pass on this one and look for another if you are looking for a good book about rock in the 70's and 80's.
Good.......2000-08-13
I thought this was a good, literate book. I only read the stuff I was interested in, but there was plenty of that (especially the George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger profiles). Frank Zappa once said that rock and roll journalism is "Writers who can't write, writing about musicians who can't play music, for readers who can't read." And he was/is correct for 99% of rock journalism. This book is the 1% of rock journalism for which that statement does not hold true. A solid book.

ROCK ON - THE SOLID GOLD YEARS - UPDATED VERSION.......2004-04-20
MY HUSBAND & I ARE AVID DOO-WOP FANS & WE HAVE HAD THIS BOOK SINCE THE EARLY 80'S. WE LOVE IT & USE IT OFTEN. OUR FRIENDS HAVE ALL BORROWED IT SO MUCH, WE HAVE BEEN BUYING AFFORDABLE COPIES TO GIVE THEM! I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT IT - IF YOU'RE A FAN, YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!!
Rock N' Roll: The Solid Gold Years.......2002-08-02
I didn't really love music untill Rock and Roll was invented. I went to all the Alan Freed Rock and Roll Shows, to the Apollo, and the Murray The K shows. I am an old baby boomer, and no books that I know of are more complete and accurate the Norm N Nite's Rock N' Roll The Solid Gold Years, and the other two that followed it up. If you love rock and roll you got to have those books. I wish they would reprint them, because the condition my coppies are in is not great. The books are so great that I would buy new reprints because I have used my original quantities so much, they could be in better condition.
The Most Definitive Book on The 50's Music.......2001-09-23
I bought this book way back when it first came out and also have the 2nd edition (encompasses the 60's).
I read that the price for a used copy is $30.00....WELL, I wouldn't sell mine for $300.
Over the years, it has been my most used book in my possession.
I wish I had a copy on CD....
I rate this volume and the 2nd edition 5 Stars ONLY because there is nothing higher....
A MUST FOR SERIOUS MUSICOLOGISTS........1998-05-18
For anyone who lived through the early beginnings of Rock N Roll, the 50's and 60's this book is a goldmine. It lists by artists most all of their charted records and some others that might not have made the charts but that were essential to the development of Rock N Roll.
It contains many photos, facts about the artists, months & years that the songs were released and the record labels.
I grew up during the 50's and was there when it all happened, so for anyone interested in collecting music from that period, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book
