Fairly helpful but...........2007-06-09
I bought this book because I was going to develop some tools to make things a little easier around the office. It has helped me tremendously, the sections on Excel and Word I found especially helpful. However, the access portion has much to be desired. For instance, First paragraph in chapter 29 on Manipulating the Data in an Access Database via VBA: (paraphrased) Data can be modified from either Access or another VBA-enabled application. This chapter shows you how to work from another VBA-enabled application.
Well what if I wanted to learn how to modify an Access db from Access! Ok maybe Access deserves a whole book to itself, but still it would have been nice if the book elaborated a little on Access VB objects.
GREAT reference for beginners.......2007-02-08
Thank you for finally publishing a book that all of us can use to learn VBA!!!
Best VBA book I've encountered!.......2006-04-06
Let me start by saying that I've purchased my fair share of VBA books the past few years and this is the best one - HANDS DOWN. It is the most organized, most thurough, most complete. There are greate USABLE/PRACTICAL examples and ideas that I've gone hunting for in my other books.... this book had it. Complete with great error handling philosophies.
Well written, well organized and the must have for VBA books. Levels for very basic programmer knowledge to moderate knowledge.
Book Description
Based on a two-week course in woodworking fundamentals offered at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Camden, Maine, this book takes a traditional approach to teaching, with the idea that learning basic skills is essential to craftsmanship. In the process, the book covers all the bases, from working with hand tools to cutting dovetails. Over 250 color photos and drawings and two complete projects a bench and a small cabinet are included.

Great for beginners or for those new to hand tools.......2007-08-17
As everyone else has mentioned, this book contains wonderful introductions to the techniques and vocabulary of fine woodworking. In addition, it also can be a great introduction to the use of hand tools, for those who might be familiar with power tools and woodworking in general, but with no hand tool experience.
One of my favorite things about this book is that the author, Peter Korn, is not afraid to give recommendations for which tools to buy and which you can do without. He sometimes will even recommend a specific brand of tool, which is great since tools may all look the same even though they are most certainly not built the same.
Overall, a great purchase.
Amazon hasn't shipped my order yet!.......2007-03-30
Amazon solicited my review of this book. I'd really like to provide a review, but as they've taken over a month to actually ship my book, and well, haven't actually shipped it yet I've had a bit of trouble getting into the text. I have high hopes that it's a good, informative, and thorough text. I'll only be able to find that out when Amazon finally decides to actually send it my way. Gosh it was silly of them to ask me what I thought when they know full well I haven't got the thing yet.
Excellent for the beginner.......2007-02-10
I'm still fairly new to this, but I learned a great deal from this book about how to go about doing things the right way. I'm on my second read after attempting many of the different methods of joinery described. I recommend it to others just starting out!
More of a project book.......2007-02-09
This book is basically a collection of projects, and then explanations of the various techniques used for each step. Good if you want to make an end table, but not that useful overall. A better book to learn all the different woodworking techniques would be The Complete Manual of Woodworking by Albert Jackson, et. al., which contains everything this does (explained and illustrated much better), and much more.
Excellent woodworking course.......2007-01-31
I have to say I agree entirely with Jason T. Amsden's review. A lot of woodworking books focus on one or two skills and just brush over the rest, so as a novice woodworker, you are left to figure things out for yourself.
While this book isn't as good as a live, hands-on course would be, it is the next best thing.

Belongs in your reference collection.......2007-09-12
I borrowed this first from the public library, then I recommended it to my boss and we ordered several copies. Covers a vast scope of applications. I haven't been thru the complete book (almost 1400 pages) but every time I have looked up topics, it has been helpful. It stays off the shelf and on my desk most of the time.
Good book - missing pages........2007-06-12
While I bought this book for reference it appears to be a very good book.
If you do buy the book...check for pages 963-994. My copy has excluded these pages and were only found while attempting to use it as a reference.
I've contacted the publisher and at this point it does not look good for correction since my purchase is over 90 days. My purchase was 6 months ago and I've sent them the receipt.
May be a good reference but don't purchase to learn VB .......2007-04-19
I purchased this book to learn programming in a visual environment. I have not programmed since I took some courses back in college programming on a main frame. There are many typos in this book and the code Does not work in many of sections. I am trying to learn by following along with the code in the book and get hit with many errors. When you look at the code from the web site it is completely different from what he has in the book which is taking huge amounts of time to figure out what he has done. I would not refer this book to anyone trying to learn the language.
OK Entry Level.......2007-03-28
This book provided good entry level coverage of the VB2005 language. I found it a little on the elementary side as I am a very experienced programmer in VC++. If you are just learning to program in VB or are just beginning to code in an Object Oriented environment than this books would be an OK book to buy. However, for beginning programmers I always reccommend "Deietl" books for the very structured system of teaching you programming concepts.
If you are an experience OO programmer in another language (VC++ or Java) looking to bring those skills into the VB2005 language then I don't reccommend this book. I highly reccommend "Visual Basic 2005 : The Language" as it covers the more advanced features and methods available and is a great reference to learn VB.
Book Description
New in the Mountaineers Outdoor Expert series: instruction for the beginning to intermediate rock climber by an internationally known guide.
*Author is an American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) certified rock guide and instructor
*Learning exercises reinforce key skills
*Step-by-step technique illustrated in over 150 photos
Craig Luebben has taught rock climbing basics to hundreds of clients and has conducted self-rescue clinics across the U.S. Here he presents the most common foot positions, hand grips, and body positions and how to use them precisely, from the smear to the crimp to the twistlock. Going beyond static moves, he emphasizes a dynamic style of movement for the greatest climbing efficiency--a style that makes the most of your strength and your time on the rock.
With an emphasis on safety and how to stay within your abilities, Luebben teaches how to evaluate potential hazards and then avoid them. Topics addressed include: risk management, face climbing, crack climbing, gear, knots, anchors, belaying, toproping, sport climbing, trad climbing, multi-pitch free climbs, rappelling, aid climbing, bouldering, training, and self-rescue.

A Comprehensive Rock Climbing Guide.......2007-04-12
From beginner through intermediate, this guide to rock climbing will not only teach you the basics, but provide you with exercises to help you improve your technique.
Excellent How-to Book for Climbers.......2007-02-09
Buy it, read it, use it! Mastering Basic Skills should be purchased at the same time as one's first pair of rock shoes. This book is as comprehensive as Freedom of the Hills but written for the rock climbing niche. It delivers a full spectrum of skills and knowledge every climber should develop. From placing protection to footwork to knots and anchors to self-rescue techniques, it's in there. The way information is parceled makes the entire book easy to comprehend, and to consult topic by topic. It's illustrated throughout with crisp photos. Receiving the benefit of the author's guide experience is a bonus; he's added advanced tips and exercises, as well as his own insights. This makes the material less dry, more practical and personal.
If you've mastered everything in Mastering Basic Skills, you truly are an advanced climber. Chances are good, though, that plenty of climbers who've been at it for while could learn something from this book, too.
Helpful for All Levels of Experience.......2006-11-06
A professional guide and industry innovator for over 20 years, Craig is an incredible resource for expert instruction. The updated techniques presented in this manual have been great for me, a climber for 8 years. There are beautiful climbing photos and close-up explanatory photos. This book won the National Book Award.
Basic climbing Skills in a clear and accessible format.......2005-01-13
Craig Luebben's new book represents a huge leap forward in climbing skills manuals. Though many excellent skills manuals exist (including Luebben's past works and the vaunted but unweildy Freedom of the Hills which goes beyond rock climbing into aplinism and mountaineering) this manual really sepetrates itself with its patient explanations and particularly with its photo instructions with added graphics for clarity. Many books of this genre have struggled with the clarity involved with diagramming knots and sysytems and Craig obviously went to great lengths to rectify this issue. The book is organized well and is easy to follow. It is nice to have these smaller manuals which focus on a specific discipline in the sport. As a climbing guide and instructor I am frequently asked to suggest learning manuals. This one will now be at the top of the list.

Regular expressions are a central element of UNIX utilities like egrep and programming languages such as Perl. But whether you're a UNIX user or not, you can benefit from a better understanding of regular expressions since they work with applications ranging from validating data-entry fields to manipulating information in multimegabyte text files.
Mastering Regular Expressions quickly covers the basics of regular-expression syntax, then delves into the mechanics of expression-processing, common pitfalls, performance issues, and implementation-specific differences. Written in an engaging style and sprinkled with solutions to complex real-world problems,
Mastering Regular Expressions offers a wealth information that you can put to immediate use.
Book Description
Regular expressions are an extremely powerful tool for manipulating text and data. They have spread like wildfire in recent years, now offered as standard features in Perl, Java, VB.NET and C# (and any language using the .NET Framework), PHP, Python, Ruby, Tcl, MySQL,
awk, Emacs, and many other popular tools and languages. If you don't use regular expressions yet, you will discover in this book a whole new world of mastery over your data. If you already use them, you'll appreciate this book's unprecedented detail and breadth of coverage. If you think you know all you need to know about regular expressions, this book is a stunning eye-opener. In spite their wide availability, flexibility, and unparalleled power, regular expressions are frequently underutilized. Regular expressions allow you to code complex and subtle text processing that you never imagined could be automated. Regular expressions can save you time and aggravation. They can be used to craft elegant solutions to a wide range of problems. A command of regular expressions is an invaluable skill. Yet what is power in the hands of an expert can be fraught with peril for the unwary.
Mastering Regular Expressions will help you navigate the minefield to becoming an expert. Once you've mastered regular expressions, they'll become an invaluable part of your toolkit. You will wonder how you ever got by without them. Mastering Regular Expressions, Second Edition has been thoroughly updated to include all the new features of Perl 5.8, as well as several other languages, including Java, VB.NET, C#, Python, JavaScript, Tcl, and Ruby. Written in the lucid, entertaining tone that made a complex, dry topic crystal-clear to thousands of programmers, and sprinkled with solutions to complex real-world problems, Mastering Regular Expressions offers a wealth information that you can put to immediate use. Topics include:
- A comparison of features among different versions of many languages and tools
- How the regular expression engine works
- Optimization (major savings available here!)
- Matching just what you want, but not what you don't want
- Sections and chapters on individual languages
Customer Reviews:
More than expected........2007-08-24
I have been in computer software developer over 7 years now and never really used regular expression until a year ago. True, you can live without it. But, with regular expression at hand, you climb up another level of programming. Code will be much concise and code research will be like a breeze.
Anyway, I didn't read this book entirely since later chapters explain intricacies and subtle differences of each specific language, e.g., java, perl, php, etc. It didn't take long to apply the knowledge I gained to real work and benefit. By the time I completed the first chapter, I already started to get rewards. My life is a lot easier now.
Even with only the first 3 chapters, this book is well worth its price. The author did superb job explaining what's going on behind the scene and guide you through the right way of constructing regular expressions for various situations. Of course, he will show you common pitfalls to avoid, too. Very detailed and comprehensive.
Highly recommended.
Best Regex material I've ever read.......2007-08-16
Before reading this book, I would have considered myself an intermediate regexer. After the first 2 chapters, I realized how novice I really was. Having only made it through 5 chapters of this book, I can't say enough about it. The detail and step-by-step analysis that Mr. Friedl takes to describe the regex matching process is the best I've ever seen. It's little things that make the analysis easy to follow -- like the brackets he uses to mark the regex, and the small triangle cursor to show where the engine is in the matching process. I continue to look forward to each new chapter. Thank you for a wonderful work of art.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-05-23
Are you a programmer working on text-related tasks? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Jeffrey Friedl, has done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that will interest anyone who has an opportunity to use regular expressions.
Friedl, begin with an introduction to the concept of regular expressions. Then, the author takes a look at text processing with regular expressions. Next, the author provides an overview of features and utilities, plus a bit of history. He also explains the details of how regular expressions work. The author continues by working through regular expressions examples. Then, he discusses efficiency in detail. Next, the author covers Perl regular expressions in detail. He then looks at Sun's java.util.regex package. The author continues by looking at .NET's language-neutral regular-expression package. Finally, the author looks at PHP's preg suite of regex functions.
This most excellent book should expand your understanding, even if you consider yourself an accomplished regular-expression expert. Perhaps more importantly, the book concentrates on mastering a particular implementation!
Good Information.......2007-05-07
Many people only barely utilize regular experssions, having been unable to get more than basic expressions to work. There are a lot of reasons for this - shell escapes, man pages that are terse to the point of being cryptic, etc. This book is a clear and very readable trip through practical regular expression creation and application that will enable the reader to get the most out of grep, awk, perl and other programs that use regular expressions.
The ultimate book for the ultimate demands - For an introduction just too heavy weight.......2007-05-03
Jeffrey Friedl describes regular expressions at an amazing depth and precision. Regular expressions are not easy and the quirks of the different tools (including their exact version and for what operating system) make writing them to an irritating black art. A black art to almost anybody. MRE sorts everything out in a comprehensible fashion. The price the reader has to pay: a very dense book, a need to follow the details until your head starts swimming and a lot of strain on the memory about what works, how and where.
MRE is somewhat easier to comprehend for a reader with a strong Pearl background. Also a good prior understanding to regular expressions is a true asset here. If you have neither, you do not need to despair. Jeffrey Friedl explains everything thoroughly from the ground up.
The writing style is very pedagogical. Important things get repeated quite often. Still this book is very dense. The flow is dry: no rhythm, special sense of humor or wit sweetens your wading through the material. Nevertheless Jeffrey Friedl kept my interest through the pages though the reading felt like hard work.
I do recommend this book to the truly dedicated reader.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book - Poor Coding Style.......2005-09-04
The book is great once you know your way around. However, the coding style is very poor. It looks more like code for VB6ers who are too dumb or too lazy to switch to .NET but want to use it anyway to get rid of the "Wanna-be coder" attribute. VB has grown, but unfortunately, some authors haven't. I prefer books from authors who can pick up changes quicker than that.
Not for beginners, not for experts........2005-03-01
I'm an intermediate programmer having worked sporadically in a variety of Object Oriented languages (Java, C++ etc.). I have to ramp up very quickly in order to do a VB.NET app, and bought this book for two reason. First: I wanted to gain a quick familiarity with the Visual Studio IDE, which I had never used before. I also needed a quick primer on the syntax and functionality of VB.NET.
On the first score--understanding the IDE--the book did a fine job of quickly getting me up and running with the basics. That was a few hours of work.
On the second score, I found this book to be alternately easy going and profoundly infuriating. Petroutsos' writing style is fluid and colloquial, essentially talking through many of the basics of the language. As a non-beginner, this served me well. I was able to read through chapters such as the overview of the VB language, quickly identifying areas which I understood from previous programming experience.
However, that easy-going writing style seems to lead to an absolutely unforgivable lack of attention to structure, rigor and detail. Despite much of the book being conceptually familiar, several areas were brand new to me. In the area concerning variable scope, Petroutsos introduces the idea of module level scope without defining a module or explaining what it is. Frustrated, I consulted the Contents and the Index but was unable to find any other place in the book where a module was discussed. Eventually, I pretty much got it through context in other chapters (and a background in OOP). I can't imagine how someone who wasn't already intimately familiar with OOP would fare trying to get through such a concept.
This book also doesn't do much hand-holding through the construction of the code samples, often leaving the reader on his/her own in assembling the code and figuring out what each line/routine does. Again, fine for an experienced programmer--not so fine for a beginner.
And this book is just rife with oversights such as these. This book is clearly targeted at relative beginners (if not absolute beginners) as it explains concepts which are familiar to all programmers (i.e. what is a variable?). And yet I can't imagine a beginner who wouldn't be very frustrated trying to figure out what the Petroutsos merely glosses over.
Finally, the editing of this book is horrible. While the prosaic style generally reads well, the author often re-states the same explanations several times within a chapter. It's clear that this is not for emphasis (since it doesn't read that way) but bad editing. A good editor will strip out such redundancy and help make a much more concise book.
Ultimately, this book served its purpose: a quick primer on a new software platform. I got what I needed out of it. However it was frustrating at times for the reasons I mentioned above. It doesn't succeed as a beginner's learning tool, nor can I imagine that it would succeed well as instructioin on advanced programming techniques.
Easy to understand. Great for beginners.......2004-11-15
Unlike so many programming books this one is relatively easy to understand. Even if you don't have any programming experience. Unfortunately, examples contain some errors. Nevertheless, one of the best books for beginners.
The good, the bad, and the beautiful.......2004-07-08
This is an excellent book for beginners or intermediate programmers.
Good points:
This book explains subjects that most other books on VB .Net ignore. If you are considering buying any other book on the dot net environment, look in its index and see if it covers FileStream, ArrayList, SortedList. Most do not cover these, but Petroutsos's book does and they really simplify life. They add to the power of your programs and cut down on the amount of work you have to do. This book has a lot of other similar features of the environment that other books skip.
Bad points:
I am appalled by the number of errors in the programming examples and descriptions. Be aware that when he writes "to the right" he often means "to the left" and vice-versa. Be aware that he likes to declare variables that do absolutely nothing in his code segments: they are declared, they use up memory, and the program never refers to them after they are declared. Be aware that the code given in the book does not always conform to the code sample in the CD that accompanies the book.
There iss an errata sheet for the text on the Sybex web, but I have never succeeded in getting them to correct errors I point out to them.
Conclusions:
You can overcome the bad points above so they are minor speed bumps, however annoying. What you cannot do is find a better text for learning the basics of .Net and also learn to use the tools that make you never want to go back to VB Version 6..
Excellent book. as an introduction to Visual Basic.Net.......2003-09-14
This is really an excellent book if you want a very good introduction to the basics of Visual Basic.Net. The book is good read, good examples, very comprehensive. If you are want to start with Visual BAsic.Net, GET THIS BOOK.

Very helpful book.......2007-03-17
This book was very helpful. I was able to quickly learn and program classes, file streams, collections and graphics. The chapters on database programming were not as helpful as I was not able to get a database up and running. All in all, I'm very happy with the book. I'm a casual programmer and I used a pre-dot-NET version of Visual Basic, so I needed a book that I could read in bits and pieces to quickly get up to speed on object oriented programming and dot-NET. I had a difficult time catching on using Microsoft's impossible help facility and the training materials that Microsoft put out.

Good Book: Delivers as promised.......2007-03-23
I disagree with C.K. Nowicki's review, above.
I bought this book because I downloaded MS's Visual Web Developer Express product and found it hard to learn. This book is really the missing manual.
This book teaches you how to use the product; it's not a book about HTML or the basics of web site design. Most beginers won't have a need to create ASP webpages that authenticate users & interface with SQL Server databases.
It was very easy to find the sample code for this book on the www.sybex.com website. You just do a seach for the book title then click "Resources & Downloads".
The author has done lots of other books, and I think it shows. It's amazing how many technology books are poorly written, and this is not one of them.
I think you get alot for your money: The book is almost 700 pages of material, I think really good value for $26.
HOWEVER-- I was expecting this product to have some features from MS Frontpage, that would appeal more to the amateur user. This product is more industrial that I expected. If MS could combine this product with Front Page, then you would have a really interesting product.
Helpful though not supported........2006-01-23
There is a lot in this book for a novice as I but a little too informational on the basics of web design. I don't think Visual Web Designer is the proper tool for someone who knows nothing about html or scripting. Some references to the VWD program interface are not correct, at least for the verison that I have. Supporting code links on the Sibex website do not work so you will have to type in any code samples in the book. Some other links for downloading info or tools do not work, as in the Microsoft's iveiwers.dll file. All in all I find the book helpful though not supported.
Average customer rating:
- Not a good book for beginners
- Not bad, but could be better
- Not a good book for someone new to ASP!!
- Average book - pay close attention while reading
- Too much information with too little application

Not a good book for beginners.......2004-08-24
I was following the instructions in this book to create a new project. It just didn't work out the way as the book says.
Not bad, but could be better.......2004-03-04
This book is a good start for those who do not know anything about ASP.NET or are moving to web development. If you have some experience in web development you may find yourself skipping some chapters.
However, it is evident that the technical editing was not done properly. Chapter 18 had VB.NET code with an extension of .cs, which means it should have been a C# code.
I have not read Mastering ASP.NET using VB.NET (by the same author and publisher), but I suspect that most of the material in the C# version was just ported from VB.NET version.
I would not agree on some of the statements made about which authentication method but it does cover what's available and the book does explain some of the basics.
Not a good book for someone new to ASP!!.......2003-11-04
More lost then when I started reading. The code examples do not work without some tweaking. The assumed familiarity with the .NET framework is frustrating. This was very disappointing. I really needed to gain some quick knowledge, and it is not going to happen here!!
Average book - pay close attention while reading.......2003-08-13
This is a beginner's book, not a reference. It is elaborate so it must be read with a good amount of concentration. If you don't read between the lines, you might miss some good points.
Too much information with too little application.......2003-06-06
I have been an adult computer trainer for six years and was sadly disappointed in this book. I found it to cover too much information incompletely. I found no concrete application or practice exercises. Usually, a book like this would start by presenting the concept, move to simple and conceptual examples to demonstrate the how, and then advance to more complex and practical examples. Some areas of the book never move past the conceptual to the practical so I can't imagine a reader would know how to apply the knowledge. Some areas covered basic examples but didn't go deep enough. The authors need to take a few education classes before writing anything else that is so out there.

Thumbs up!.......2007-08-09
This book was VERY informative. It helped me understand Windows Vista Home Premium a lot. I learned things I would not have known otherwise. It didn't go into the Windows Vista Basic much though.
