5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A Complete and Thorough Guitar Book! .......2007-04-16

I have several guitar books as I have been learning to play for the past 2 years. I have alot of instructional books and learned bits and pieces. This book is an excellent resource and covers almost every topic in great detail. Everything from chords, picking, blues, rock and country guitar, guitar effects, amps, etc. Also includes instruction and pictures on repairing and maintaining your guitar, adjusting the action, changing strings, etc. A valuable resource and worth owning yourself.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding instructional which stands apart from similar-sounding guitar 'how-to' guides.......2005-09-05

Want to learn guitar from a book? There are plenty of slimmer guides on the market - but none with the depth and detail of Moran Illustrated Guitar, which packs in color illustrations of techniques. From playing different kinds of chords to power rock, single notes, slides, string muting and much more, Moran Illustrated Guitar packs in the step-by-step close-up color photos so it's hard to go wrong. An outstanding instructional which stands apart from similar-sounding guitar 'how-to' guides.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best Educative Book .......2005-08-03

This book I would extremely, highly recommended for beginners and I mean it. Sure I might be just a kid but trust me I have this book and I know a good book when I see one. Its more likely to keep you occupied since it in color and it shows you pictures of everything so you can see and understand the things it tells you to do. This book tells the history, parts, basic concepts, how to hold, fretting, picking, tuning, how to practice on, how to play a guitar for all acoustic, classical, and electric types of guitars. It shows you practicing techniques and doesn't just say to do things you don't understand. Teaches you to play different chords (barre chords and power chords), strumming patterns, single notes, and suggests songs for practice. Teaches you to read tablature(sheet music for guitars), chord diagrams, guitar symbols. Teaches different types of music rock, blues, folk, country, and classical guitar. Great thing about it is you should buy this book before purchasing a guitar because it gives you a lot of tips on which type of guitar you want to purchase. Explains "all" the care and maintainace required in a guitar and "all" its accessories. Mentions home recording for people who are starting to make bands, CDs or stuff. It has suggestions for reference material as well if you can't find the information you want. I don't think I disliked this book at all. For all the tiny details they might of not included I would look at the reference material for that. They don't specifically talk about certain guitars but more in general. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Another Maran success... .......2005-07-04

Maran Graphics has once again come out with a book that absolutely rocks... Maran Illustrated Guitar.

Content: Guitar Basics; Getting Ready To Play; Reading Music; Playing Basic Chords; Playing Barre Chords And Power Chords; Playing Single Notes; Articulation Techniques; Playing Rock Guitar; Playing The Blues; Playing Folk And Country Music; Playing Classical Guitar; Buying A Guitar; Guitar Accessories; Guitar Care And Maintenance; Home Recording; Quick Reference; Index

As with all other Maran Illustrated books, they've done an excellent job combining clear photos and instructive illustrations to guide you during the learning process. They even use multiple exposure photos with "ghosting" to show fingering sequences so that you can tell what movement should be combined with finger positioning. Very nicely done. In addition to just showing you how to play, they also cover the history of guitars and the masters of the instrument. It ends up giving you an appreciation for the instrument that you don't normally see in a "how to play" book. I like how they go beyond mere mechanics to show you how to care for your instrument, from stringing to cleaning to transportation. Basically, this covers the entire spectrum of the subject.

I've often wanted to learn to play the guitar. My wife plays and one of my sons play. I can't say that I have a lot of time to learn it right now, but at least I now have the main tool I need to help me get there when I'm ready. Excellent book, and highly recommended if you want to learn to play...

5 out of 5 stars The best beginner's book I've seen!.......2005-06-25

Back in high school (a LONG time ago) I dabbled in guitar, but haven't touched one in decades. I've been seriously thinking about taking up this instrument again when, lo and behold, a review copy of "Maran's Illustrated Guitar" showed up in my mailbox -- probably because I've reviewed other books with creative graphics layouts. It certainly wasn't because of any expertise on the guitar! But God works in strange ways, they say...

This book is absolutely the best beginner's guide I've seen, and the one I'm actually using to learn the guitar. It covers everything from the history of the guitar, famous guitarists, types of guitars (classical, acoustic, electric), how to buy, clean, repair, change strings, perform adjustments and maintenance -- and of course, how to play it. Not only does this book have the usual chord charts, it has actual photos showing how to place the fingers on the frets. And it doesn't just cover basic chords. It also includes a section on reading music and playing single notes -- something I did not find in other beginner's books. After learning the basics, you can turn to specific chapters for pointers on Rock, Blues, Country, Folk, or Classical guitar, with different picking and strumming styles clearly explained. (For each section, the model holding the guitar is dress appropriately for the genre -- a nice touch!) There is also a chapter on amplifers and other equipment for electric guitar players, and a section on setting up a home recording studio.

One of the best things I learned is that there are now electronic tuners for guitars (and most other instruments) -- something that did not exist in my high school days. I immediately bought one. As with everything else in this book, there was a clear description of the types of tuners, the pros and cons of each, etc., complete with photos.

The graphical layout is very well done and pleasing to the eye. The photos are interspersed with the text to get away from the boring "Gutenberg box" effect. Another plus is that the binding is flexible enough for the book to lay flat while playing -- a major convenience when both of your hands are busy holding the guitar. In short, this is a beautiful book and a pleasure to use. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars How to destroy a very good book........2007-03-09

Top rated helping constuction manual and guide, very good colour photos, nice presentation overall and just about 1/6th of a page about guitar finishing (painting e.t.c.).

3 out of 5 stars Electric guitar construction.......2007-02-13

I purchased three recommended books on electric solid body guitar construction. Hiscock's book is more complete and informative but this one came in 2nd. If I wanted to build the guitar described in this book, it gets the job done. It's less complete if you have another design concept in mind.

Book Description

For over 170 years the C.F. Martin company has produced some of the finest flat-top acoustic guitars in the world. Martin's designs for the shape and construction of these instruments have influenced virtually every other manufacturer, and the flat-top guitar as we know it today is essentially the same as that established by Martin in the 1850s. At one time or another Martin's guitars have driven the sound of every kind of popular music, from country to pop, from bluegrass to rock 'n' roll, and with the current resurgence of acoustic music, Martin's premier guitars are once more finding a new generation of enthusiastic musicians. The Martin Book is a fresh view of this extraordinary guitar maker, pulling together many strands of musical and manufacturing lore into a fascinating whole that illuminates Martin's long and varied history. Dozens of specially commissioned full-color photographs show every kind of Martin model, some of which come from Martin's own unique collection. Meticulous listings for collectors and enthusiasts simplify the identification of Martin instruments and detail virtually every guitar that the company has produced since the early 1830s.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A short history of Martin guitars........2000-08-01

This book is an excellent story of the Martin family and how they came to be guitar manufacturers for the past 133 years. It gives you a brief history of the family and the many guitar styles that have been produced through the years. The book also touches briefly on the history of guitar playing in the United States and how the Martin family rose to meet the challenges of the era of the banjo and the mandolin. The book also contains many fine photographs illustrating the Martin line from the beginning until the mid 1990's (when the book was written).

The second half of the book is a reference section that lists each Martin guitar style and gives information on how to date particular instruments. This is valuable, especially for collectors since on the early instruments only the cases were labeled and not the guitars themselves.

All in all I found the book interesting. My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is since the book was published in 1995 Martin has come out with many special run guitars. Unfortunately they're not covered in this book. If you have even a passing interest in Martin guitars you'll find this book interesting.

4 out of 5 stars a piece of my heart.......2005-08-16

I was just a boy in the 60s, in Italy, when i first heard that very particular sound. Only after a lot of years i could buy a Martin Guitar, 'cause they were too expensive for us, really impossible to buy! Today i'm a player and I play that sound, and I never got tired of it! Like Stephen Stills says in the foreword, it's something magic, pure magic. This book doesn't explain magic, but it shows it! Paging, photos, notes, history, all is excellent. The only gap (yes, there's one!), is the cover: paperback!?! It's like finding plastic instead of wood in your guitar! This book was made only for a hardcover! Thanks also to Amazon for selling & shipping with care and so fast! ..in any case highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The House of Martin.......2003-10-12

As the proud owner of 2 Martins, it was very interesting to read the story of the Martin family business. My only gripe is the book seems a bit dis-jointed, with explanation boxes / articles taking up to 2 pages, thus competing with the text, causing you either to lose track of the narrative whilst reading the boxes, or having to go back many pages once you have finished the chapter. Nevertheless, all the information is there, and it is an interesting story for any guitar enthusiast, not just Martin owners. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Martin Guitars.......2002-03-02

Wonderful book! If your into Martin's, this is a great read. This one's better than Walter Carter's book...

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT TREATISE ON MARTIN GUITARS.......2001-06-10

DO NOT HESITATE....to buy this book. It is a really great book. It takes you back, all the way to Germany and the Stauffer influence on Martin Guitar. It has all the different models and the history of changes taking place not only with the company but the effect upon the instruments they were building. Maybe I'm just crazy about acoustic guitars but now, I have a greater appreciation for this genuine American guitar company. Richard Johnston and Jim Washburn really did knock the dust off lots of cool Martin guitar memorabilia too. Inside the cover is and acknowledgement to Dick Boak as Consulting Editor, he is a Martin man through and through and wrote the text for Martin's Kit Construction book and drew the plans, I do believe. This is an authoritative book and great photos on most of it's 264 pages. Yeah, I kinda liked it, and you will too if you like acoustic guitars, especially Martins. Two thumbs up, Five Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Martin Guitars An Illustrated Celebration.......2000-06-30

Like most guitar nuts I'm a Martin lover. I thought that enough books had been written about the company and there was nothing more to say. I'm happy to admit I was wrong. The writers went the extra distance getting personal stories and never before seen pictures of some of the most beautiful guitars ever made. Surprisingly, the authors also delved into the less than rosy times, labor disputes and the near end of one of the country's oldest family run businesses. The book is the type of "bible" that you can return to often and learn something new. I couldn't give it a higher recommendation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but flawed.......2007-08-16

My copy is dated 2001, 2nd ed. The photos are small and look like what you get when you print on a 300dpi laser printer. Most of the time you can see what you need to see, but in some more detail-oriented photos the definition is totally insufficient.

A bigger problem for me is the poor editing. The book is translated from German to English, and the translation is mostly fine. But there are many mechanical errors in the book's production. For example: paragraphs printed twice, references in the text to photos or figures that don't exist or are misnumbered, text columns that cut off an entire passage so that you don't know how it ends, etc.

The book's strength is that its content is comprehensive. Martin goes into far more detail about guitar electronics than most "build your own guitar" books. He even gives a brief tutorial on winding your own pickups. He also gives a tutorial on building semi-hollows, which is a subject that most authors ignore. However, in general I think that it would have been better to cover fewer subjects in more detail.

For someone intending to build a solid-body electric guitar, I would recommend Melvyn Hiscock's book as your first buy, with this Koch book in second place. If you can afford it, buy both books, and also Dan Erlewine's repair book. If you're serious, you really need all three. I would also note that most of the material in this book is freely available on the net's various luthier's forums, and in more detail. However, it can be hard to track down the piece of info you need on the net, and so books are convenient. Koch might not tell you everything you need to know about winding a pickup or building a semihollow, but he gives you enough information so that you can assess whether it's worth your while to seek out more, or whether you don't really want to tackle that project anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect........2007-05-12

Wow, there is a lot of info packed into this book. I agree with most of the other reviewers in that the appearance could be improved. Photos aren't as good as they need to be, but Mr. Koch does a great job of explaining things and the written content is excellent. The only other weak spot, for me, was not enough wiring info for the semi-acoustic version, which is what I intend to build. However, Mr. Koch is accessible and he graciously answered my questions. I'm well pleased with this book.

4 out of 5 stars Glad I have it.......2006-01-22

I am in the final stages of my first electric guitar. Just about another 10 coats on the neck and a little wiring. Terrible pictures, great info. I find myself refering to Melvyn Hiscock's book (Make Your Own Electric Guitar 2nd edition) for the great (how to) photos and schematics. Both books were a great help. HINT... If this is your first guitar, DON'T use poly-urathane on the neck or body. The book says don't also. So I did. Looks OK now but would have saved me alot of hours if I used lacquer as recomended. I am using autobody (spray can) clear on the neck and it looks great. Have fun

3 out of 5 stars A lot o' good information presented extremely poorly........2006-01-14

Yes, you definetly could build an excelent guitar with this book alone, but I wouldn't want to try. Everything you're gonna want to know is in there, but the subjects are not arranged logically and the author did not group seperate things into seperate paragraphs. You really have to read every sentence carefully because it is easy to miss things. It is not terribly useful as a reference if you are looking for specific information because it is as often as not put in an unrelated chapter.

It was also as many others noted horribly edited.

He does not really go step-by-step through the construction. He also stressed the use of the most expensive power tools on the market. He actually states in one part that you can not hope to make a guitar without a plunge router. (hear that. That's the sound of real woodworkers falling over laughing.)

On the plus side it has the most complete finishing section I've seen in an electric guitar construction book. The pickup section is also good, although most of it is composed of articles borrowed from other authors.

I strongly recomend buying Melvin Hiscock's book and a chisel.

Get this one through inter-library loan.

5 out of 5 stars Whole lotta info..........2005-02-19

Although I haven't really got to build my guitar I feel confident in recomending this book. After been playing for many years and doing things for myself (setup, maintenance and repair) I can assure that this book will provide the beginner with more than enough background information for the lutherie business or hobby. A big plus to this book is the frequent presentation of low-cost solutions to build a number of aparatus that would help in the absence of expensive and/or hard to find tools.
The author is clearly into the pleasure of the craft and concerned with the reader achieving the final goal: build an instrument.
I'd also like to recommend the author's new book on building lap steels. I haven't read it all the way, but it does contain lots of useful information. Pictures in the book can be downloaded bigger, in color and with better resolution from the web, and the shy beginner will found confort in building a very simple lap steel project and progressively go into building more sophisticated instruments.
5 stars surely isn't fair enough to the AUTHOR's commitment to the craft and to teaching it.

I had never done any musical woodworking projects, and this book (Along with the guidance of some skilled woodworking friends) walked me comfortably through the steps to completing a good looking and good sounding lap steel. Very rewarding purchase. Can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars It's ALL in this one book........2004-04-22

As with is other book, Martin Koch tells you ALL you need to know to build a beautiful instrument.

From building 2 types of lap steel's from A to Z, to making the case and even making your own pickups, this book as it all.

This is my second book by Martin Koch and let me just say that his books are a gold mine of information from cover to cover.

Martin Koch also as a website that compliments his books where you can ask questions, see other instruments people have built and there are also good tools such as Fret Calculator and stuff.

Trust me......if you want to build your own instrument, you will not regret purchasing this book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2007-02-16

I bought this book a couple of years ago simply for the fact that Ted Greene endorsed it (in the preface).

I have to say that it helped me to think differently about the subject (arpeggios) and break out of some of my own limitations & conceptions. It is very good for helping any player get used to position shifts up and down the neck using 3(+) octave arpeggios.

His left hand fingering solutions are different than the stock Yngwie clone stuff (and I've seen tons of it), it's interesting & challenging -and therefore helpful in pushing (you) out of your box.

It has a really excellent (but small) section on different (but not widely known) picking approaches that will surely challenge and expand any "shredder" or other player.

All that being said, it is a rather advanced book that would require a lot of patience for a beginner -but the payoff for such a person would be well worth the effort.

Its weak points are that, yes, there are some typos, mistakes & misprints here and there. Also, I HATE it when a book of this size doesn't have a spiral binding as it doesn't sit well on a music stand.

Buy it. It's a great resource and very comprehensive.

    1 out of 5 stars disappointed.............2004-08-22

I was hoping for something better than this. I have a thorough background in this stuff and think it could have been presented in a much better way. A good break down of the CAGED system would have been nice for beginers using this book aswell as a bit of chord theory. There were lots of small errors aswell. If you know how too construct arpeggios you'd catch them but a beginer/intermediate might not. I think there were many redundent arpeggios in here and the book would be more work than what it's worth.....that being said I'm personally a study fiend and study as much usefull guitar material as I can.

    5 out of 5 stars Andy's the man........2003-12-16

Don't question it. this book isnt for beginners either. This is some complex stuff, but he's got all kinds of arpeggios you can concieve (And some you cant). If you read the front before the main section, he tells you how this book was intended to be used, so you know what to do. the fingering is key though, Sometimes you'll try to play it just by looking at the notes & numbers, but it doesnt flow, but if you look at the fingering, everything fits together. But do everything like he says and that stuff sounds great. This book isnt straight sweep picking the entire way through either, just so you know, but it is awesome none the less. serious shred action.
