5 out of 5 stars Respect This!.......2007-09-21

Great material that every single married couple should read. Dr. Eggerich provides many insights and testimonies to illuminate the woman's heart, and the man's mind. The differences between the sexes are real, complex, but navigable. The author does not paint a picture of easy steps and quick success, but emphasizes the truth that commitment to your spouse, and a great deal of humility and maturity are required to bring true peace to your marriage. A great marriage is achievable. This book brings to the table many tangible ideas that can help you attain a truly happy marriage that God has destined for you and your spouse!
The only negative thing I will say about this book is that the repititious references to the Love & Respect Conferences begin to sound a bit like a late night commercial. To be gracious, I would say that the author approaches arrogance, though he feigns transparency in revealing the fact that he and his wife have not acheived perfection, but that the techniques (for lack of a better word) in this book have helped them as well. With that said, I would highly recommend the read - both husband and wife should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Death of the Vicious Circle.......2007-09-20

A must read for long marrieds and for anyone seeking to prevent those useless, maddening repetitive arguments. This book is for both sides of the couple. The first 4 chapters lay out the logical criteria so don't take it as bashing men or women. It states what turns out to be the obvious. It is well worth the effort. After 39 years, we are in honeymoon heaven again.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-09-17

I highly recommend this book. The authors bring to light the keys to having a happy marriage and the insights into our own behaviors that we must understand to bring about that happiness. My wife and I benefitted greatly from this book.

5 out of 5 stars great resource.......2007-08-23

Skimmed a friends copy, then bought three. One for me, one for my son and one for my daughter. Wish this book had been around back in the stone age when I was young.

3 out of 5 stars Title says it all - not much substance to this book.......2007-08-21

This book should have half it's length. Most of the book is filled with stories from the author's counselling or his own life and scripture which is a good reference, but the book could have used some basic psychological observations or some scientific examples of how men and women are physically wired different in our brains. I appreciate that the author recognizes the differences in men and women and that we really should not be treated equally, this book just doesn't have much depth. If you seek the truth and have patience, many recommendations in this book will come naturally.

Book Description

When I Was White is the mesmerizing story of a black woman born to white parents during the most unforgiving years of official racism in South Africa. Sandra Laing was officially registered and raised as a white child. But when she was sent to a conservative boarding school, she was mercilessly persecuted because of her dark skin and frizzy hair-the results, her parents said, of a genetic throwback. In 1966, when Sandra was ten, the police removed her from school and she was reclassified as 'colored.' In a bitter court battle followed closely by the press, Sandra's parents fought, and lost. Then, as a teenager, Sandra eloped with a black man, and her parents disowned her. She struggled with poverty, illness, and the injustice of race laws. With the end of apartheid in 1994, Sandra vowed to find her mother. Her long, troubling search and their ultimate reunion forms the book's surprising and deeply moving conclusion. Drawing on a wealth of research, including extensive interviews with Sandra Laing, her family and friends, as well as access to previously sealed government files, Judith Stone has written a close-up, compelling account of a remarkable woman whose life stands as a tribute to the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Translated Life.......2007-09-24

I want to commend Judith Stone for the phenomenal work she has done in discussing a number of difficult subjects: Sandra Laing herself, the history of South Africa, and the nature of memory, family, and the examined life. Clearly, Sandra's lack (repression) of memory, and her inability to articulate her feelings, left Stone with an enormous challenge. She works through this brilliantly by marshaling the journalistic reports from the time and later, interviewing people who know Sandra, and sensitively explaining and exploring Apartheid's tortured history. Stone uses her knowledge of studies of PTSD, false-memory syndrome, and other relevant fields in psychology to examine Sandra's individual and South Africa's collective forgetfulness/refusal to admit reality. All in all, Stone has done a stunningly professional and sensitive job in illuminating one person's life, the cruel and terrible absurdities of Apartheid South Africa, and, more broadly still, what it means to live in a world where an ideological rigidity based on lies and hypocrisy sucks the life out of everyone--oppressor or oppressed.

5 out of 5 stars An emotionally charged, highly recommended pick........2007-08-04

When Sandra Laing was born in 1955 to a pro-apartheid Afrikaner couple in South Africa she was registered as a white child - but upon entering a white boarding school, was persecuted by students and teachers because of her brown skin. Her parents believed an interracial union back in their family history was to blame, but neighbors thought Mrs. Laing had committed adultery with a black man and the entire family was shunned. She was reclassified as 'coloured', her parents fought the South African courts to reverse the determination, then as a teen Sandra eloped - with a black man - and her parents disowned her. WHEN SHE WAS WHITE: THE TRUE STORY OF A FAMILY DIVIDED BY RACE crosses back and forth along discrimination lines and is riveting. Impossible to put down, it will enhance any general-interest lending library and is an emotionally charged, highly recommended pick.

5 out of 5 stars History Is So Interesting.......2007-08-01

Histry is so interesting. It is the tie to learning about how things use to be. This book is full of history and tells us how the African people were treated long ago. The sad thing is that even today these people are still treated very different. My nieces who are black and white are beautiful, but experience racism everyday. The book can be difficult reading in some parts because it is history. So be patient and enjoy it. I experienced many feelings while reading it. Makes me want to go talk to my 95 year old grandma and just listen to all her stories.

1 out of 5 stars Sisters speak.......2007-06-04

With great anticipation, i began to read a riviting life story. However, i couldn't get through the first two chapters because of the dry manner in which the book was written. It was an extremely difficult read. I never finished the book. I was very disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A story of a mixed-race girl in Apartheid South Africa.......2007-05-30

Sandra Laing was born in the wrong place at the wrong time. South Africa was in the midst of apartheid, and the little girl didn't fit in to the country's strict classifications of white, black and Coloured. Instead she baffled family and neighbors in Eastern Transvaal by sprouting kinky hair that shaped her dark complexion, much to the dismay of her ethnically Dutch, Afrikaner parents. Judith Stone writes the history of this troubled girl, from her first encounters with racism all the way to her middle-aged life in the present day.

Sandra's parents tried to turn a blind eye to their daughter's physical differences, but the white boarding school she attended would do no such thing. Parents and faculty were outraged that an obviously non-white student was being admitted to their school and mingling with their fair-skinned children. Apartheid was about separation and segregation, and Sandra was getting in the way of their long-established system. Her mother was accused of sleeping with a black man, and her father had to constantly defend his paternity. Admitting to some "color-mixing" in their ancestry was not acceptable in such a polarized climate, even though this had gone on unspoken in South Africa for decades.

When Sandra was finally escorted off the grounds of her school, she had no idea what she did wrong. Her father was launching his own private campaign to keep her white; Sandra didn't see things in color yet, and her mom and dad were determined to keep it that way. But she did see that her parents treated her differently from her brothers, and she did notice the disgustful looks of those who had been in charge of her care. She knew that something about her was just not right. At the hands of government officials, Sandra's official race changed from white to Coloured to white again. She realized that she must take her fate into her own hands, creating an identity for herself that no one would be able to take away from her.

WHEN SHE WAS WHITE isn't a traditional biography. It chronicles not only the life of the protagonist but also the struggle of those who tried to bring her life into the public eye. In this way, the book is both a story and a study in psychoanalysis, in sociology and in consumer culture. Sandra was a willing but confused eyewitness to her own history, and half the struggle of chronicling it has been in getting the story straight. Sandra doesn't see herself as a hero or a representation of the ills of apartheid. All she sees is the pain that she feels she caused her family, and her only wish is for their forgiveness --- not recognizing that they are the ones who have a lot to be forgiven for.

This book does much to present the contradictions of apartheid to those outside of South Africa. It also paints a strong picture of the landscape and individuals who made the country what it was. The expanse of the Transvaal countryside sharply contrasts with the polarized societies who lived there, and it is as if it were a beautiful cake on top of a precarious tower that was threatening to come crashing down at any second. Sandra represented some of the flaws of that cake, and she was therefore shunned by those who wanted to keep things as they were.

WHEN SHE WAS WHITE is the print edition of the movie "Skin," which is scheduled to appear in 2008. It is a story in its own right, though, and shouldn't be left on the shelf in anticipation of the film. Judith Stone speaks of both the cruelty and the perceived justification of apartheid, and no one is presented as a simple-minded individual. Bigotry runs deep in South Africa's history, but the focus of this book is in healing the wounds from the past and embracing this new, free country, where government-regulated racial caste systems no longer exist.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 1997: "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." So begins the story of Dolores Price, the unconventional heroine of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? She's suffered almost every abuse and familial travesty that exists: Her father is a violent, philandering liar; her mother has the mental and emotional consistency of Jell-O; and the men in her life are probably the gender's most loathsome creatures. But Dolores is no quitter; she battles her woes with a sense of self-indulgence and gluttony rivaled only by Henry VIII. Hers is a dysfunctional Wonder Years, where growing up in the golden era was anything but ideal. While most kids her age were dealing with the monumental importance of the latest Beatles single and how college turned an older sibling into a long-haired hippie, Dolores was grappling with such issues as divorce, rape, and mental illness. Whether you're disgusted by her antics or moved by her pathetic ploys, you'll be drawn into Dolores's warped, hilarious, Mallomar-munching world.

Book Description

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

4 out of 5 stars To be read again and again.......2007-08-13

I first bought this book when I was a teenager. I lent it to a friend, who lost it, so I recently re-bought it to read again. This was either my third or fourth time reading it.

I found that, as I had suspected, this book would still strike a chord with me in my mid-twenties, but in a different way. As a teenager, I identified with Delores's angst and sarcastic armor, and now I identify with the parts of the book in which she grows into a woman. Of course, being able to identify with the character is certainly not the only reason I continue to love this book.

As many have said, despite the depressing (and sometimes downright horrifying) events of Delores's life, she still manages to evoke a tremendous sense of humor (albeit dark humor most of the time). This book will make you laugh, make you cry . . . The symbolism of the whales in the book is beautiful and simple. As a person who didn't really "get" symbolism in high school, the symbols were easy to recognize and relate throughout the story. This is a wonderful read for those interested in psychology/sociology, because the reader picks up on things about Delores that she herself doesn't yet recognize.

Some may find this book somewhat disturbing. There is a lot of swearing and sex, but none of it gratuitous. It is all necessary for you to understand the beautiful and complex person that is Delores Price. I recommend this book to anyone--male or female--who has ever felt tremendous pain and wants to feel validated (and who is not easily offended!).

In conclusion, this is a book which I will continue to read until well in my 30's (and probably beyond, if the book lasts that long!), because each time I get something different and new out of it.

2 out of 5 stars anything but funny .......2007-07-08

After literally years of not reading a novel because I just didn't have time, I wanted a good read.

I picked this book up on an impulse, never having heard of Wally Lamb.

Throughout the misery of this book with a thoroughly unlikeable heroine, I kept thinking how strange it was that a woman (assuming Wally Lamb was female) would write something like this - neither I nor any woman I know would have thought, reacted or felt this way.

Well - once I finished (and the ending is LAME, to say the least!), the last page revealed that Wally Lamb is a middle-aged man with a family, which at least explained that part.

It was well written, if clichéd and predictable, but sickeningly graphic in parts. As for funny - unless you revel in seeing people heading for disaster and being jerks, I don't really see what's funny about it all.

4 out of 5 stars FUNNY, TRAGIC, IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN.......2007-07-03

This was a captivating book, narrated by a depressed, drastically overweight teenage girl named Dolores Price. The tale is so realistically and hilariously feminine that it's very hard to believe a man wrote the thing. I was so thoroughly caught up in this girl's story, and was truly rooting for her to claw her way to a happy ending. Funny, tragic, impossible to put down, and, as with all books that make my "best-loved" list, an ending of much-deserved grace.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it........2007-06-30

I found it rather intriguing that of the people I know and the reviewers who read this book either loved it or totally disliked it. I've even heard "I didn't get it". That suggests it really pushed some buttons.

I,ve read all the Murder She Wrote books, and they never fail to please. Donald Bain is a genius. I was gripped from the start of this book right up to the last word. The ever jinxed Jessica and her Cabot Cove pals travel to London on Wayne Silverton's new airline. It's not long before the owner of the airline get's himself killed , and it's up to Jess and her pal George Sutherland to wrap up the case.
If you love Murder She Wrote, you will love this. It's a must for any avid fan, both of MSW and Donald Bain. Happy reading. Tea anyone????

2 out of 5 stars Didn't feel like "Murder, She Wrote" to me.......2007-05-31

I originally bought the novel because I had just watched the DVD's of Season Six and was wanted some more Jessica Fletcher. Also, considering Donald Bain also wrote "Coffee, Tea, or Me?" I thought this self-referential nod amusing.

The disappointing part to me was the ending, though. It just ended, and Jessica didn't actually solve the case. Even when a twist at the end happened, it was because she had a hunch, she couldn't give a concrete reason why she thought the way she did. To me, a "Murder, She Wrote" story always ends with a scene where Jessica explains how she came to the conclusions she did and it shows that the clues were all there. This book did nothing of the kind, and I felt kind of cheated.

5 out of 5 stars murder, she wrote: coffee, tea, or murder.......2007-05-15

this was a really good read...about a third of the way thru i thought i knew the murderer, then alittle more intriqued accured and i changed my mine....more suspects....i just love the way these stories are laid out...
especially when jessica and the inspector from scotland yard is involved.
i also perfer the group from cabot cove...they are such and interesting bunch..in the long run i had figured out the murderer using jessica's clues, and it just happen to be the one who did the killing..
this book is exciting all the way through. finished is two readings..couldn't put it down.

Product Description

This book is the sixth and final installment of Bruce Spizer's critically accliamed books on the Beatles American records. It details the stories behind the records released by Swan, United Artists, Decca, MGM, Atco and Polydor, each who ingeniously marketed their limited number of Beatles recordings to victims of Beatlemania. It also covers the theme albums issued by Capitol Records in the 70s and 80s such as Rock 'N' Roll Music and Love Songs, as well as The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl, Rarities and the unreleased Sessions LP.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER EXCELLENT BOOK FROM MR. SPIZER.......2007-09-27

I have all of Bruce Spizer's Beatle related books and this final instalment matches all of the others for sheer detail and quality. It's a mind boggling journey through all of the Beatles "other label" US releases and certainly an education for collectors and fans alike. I especially like the "Capitol in The 70's & 80's" chapter covering the various compilation Lp's issued such as "Hollywood Bowl", "Rock & Roll Music" "Reel Music" & "Love Songs"..this completes a "Capitol" loose end.
It's a typically thorough book and sits proudly alongside the other Spizer instalments and the 50+ other Beatles tomes on my bookshelf. Well done Bruce. Very recommended to Beatles fans and Collectors alike.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Spizer Beatles Swan Song book.......2007-08-09

I was lucky enough to see Bruce Spizer at the 2007 Chicago Beatlefest.
I purchased the book "The Beatles Swan Song" and was very happy that Bruce personally signed the book for me.
This "blooming book" / (i.e a reference to A Hard Day's night)is a must read!!!!!
The book is hard back and the print is very legible (even for my eyes) and the graphics are just lovely.
The content?....let me say this again, "Thank you Bruce, I appreciate your work and research you did."
"THE BEATLES SWAN SONG" book is simply an amazing piece of work!!! VERY HISTORICAL!!!

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Swan Song.......2007-07-07

Mr Spizer is the ultimate Beatle book author. In both content and quality he is outstanding. This book like all the others before it is very helpful and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Beatles reference.......2007-06-16

While not a book for casual readers wanting to learn about the Beatles, this is an indispensable, necessary reference book for anyone interested in the details of the vinyl record output of the Fab Four.

If you are familiar with the author's earlier efforts, you know that you need this one too.

If you want to learn about their original releases on Capitol, Apple, Vee-Jay, buy his earlier books. This one covers Swan, MGM, Polydor, Decca, United Artists, post-Apple Capitol Records and a hodge podge of others.

My only disappointment is that he isn't going to give the Spizer Treatment to all of the non-Beatle artists recordings released on vinyl on Apple Records. But his Herculean efforts so far are quite an accomplishment for any mortal. To track down details on those other, sometimes very obscure artists, may be too much to ask of one man.....

5 out of 5 stars A great gift idea for the Beatle lover you know.......2007-05-26

I bought this book for my brother for his 50th birthday. He knows as much as or more than most about the Beatles' history, but he found this book refreshing with lots of new and interesting info about the Fab Four and their music and records. He calls me with little tidbits about the Beatles all the time! Great pics, too!

"When it comes to pleasuring women and conversing in the language of love, cunnilingus should be every man's native tongue," writes clinical sexologist Ian Kerner, Ph.D. in She Comes First, a straightforward, intimate, and exuberant guide to cunnilingus. Kerner first explored "the oral caress" as a way of compensating for his "sexual inadequacies," and quickly learned that women not only welcomed but often preferred "the way of the tongue," reaching orgasm more consistently than through intercourse. Kerner educates readers about the clitoris, "the powerhouse of pleasure," with 18 parts and 8,000 nerve endings (twice as many as the penis) and describes female sexual response from "foreplay" through "coreplay" to "moreplay." A large part of the book is a graphic, detailed primer on "mouth music," including best positions, step-by-step techniques (illustrated), and tips for tongue and fingers. How long should this last? Until the woman has an orgasm or many, says Kerner, and "melts blissfully before your eyes." "The vast majority of women complain about guys who don't like to do it, don't know how to do it, or simply don't do it nearly enough," writes Kerner. This book will change that. Women: Buy it for your partner! --Joan Price

Book Description

As women everywhere will attest, when it comes to understanding female sexuality, most guys know more about what's under the hood of a car than under the hood of a clitoris. And while it seems that men have struggled valiantly since the dawn of time to find ways to reliably elicit the female orgasm, rare is the guy who has the modesty to ask: "What do I do?" Ironically, the answer has always been right there on the tip of his tongue.

Welcome to the world of She Comes First, where the mystery of female satisfaction is solved and the tongue is proven mightier than the sword. According to Ian Kerner, clinical sexologist and evangelist of the female orgasm, oral sex has long been deemed an optional aspect of foreplay, but, in fact, it's coreplay -- simply the best way for leading a woman through the entire process of sexual response.

Fun, informative, and easy to read, She Comes First is a virtual encyclopedia of female pleasure, detailing dozens of tried-and-true techniques for consistently satisfying a woman and illustrated step-by-step instructions to ensure success. These simple methods represent a new era in sexual intimacy, one in which the exchange of pleasure occurs on a level playing field and fulfillment is mutual.

She Comes First exuberantly offers a fresh new sexual philosophy that inspires every man to make a mantra of Rhett Butler's infamous line to Scarlett O'Hara, "You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how."

4 out of 5 stars how can a title like that not sell?.......2007-10-02

A bit over-rated, this work is extremely thorough in mastering her oral pleasuring. I wouldn't, however, say that it presents anything that hasn't been discussed in other literature. The book has simply been packaged and promoted well. Fun for experimentation, but not as witty as some press outlets have led us to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Men, do your woman a favor and read this!.......2007-09-06

I didn't read the book, but my husband did. He read it in one sitting, actually. Based on the "results," I give it 5 stars and wish I could give it more! Wow! I plan on reading it myself tonight.

5 out of 5 stars Coming in second isn't so bad........2007-09-03

I really enjoyed this guide to sex for men. The premise is to basically allow/help your partner to orgasm first, that way you come in second, though this isn't a bad thing, far from it. The author really gives good advice, in detail without being too elusive or standoffish. A highly recommended read, along with Sex Machine: A Man's Guide to What Really Pleases a Woman in Bed.

5 out of 5 stars Men: PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!.......2007-07-03

I'd like to first mention I'm a woman. I purchased this book along with He Comes Next, but read this one first. It's written in a manner that teaches one to recognize the "real" terms for each part of a woman's sexual anatomy without insulting one's intelligence and not only shows step-by-step techniques to truly please a woman but also clues the guy in on the one thing that's crucial to satisfying her: give her all the time in the world she needs to reach orgasm-don't RUSH her!

No man should go on bumbling through another act of cunnilingus when there's a book like this that will instantly teach him to keep her "coming" back for more and more and more...

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a completely useless book...but close........2007-08-16

This book starts out well enough, it defines the word commitmentphobic (anyone scared of a commitment) and then discusses active and passive conflicts. It then talks about characteristics of each type -- things a person with active conflicts typically does in relationship, and the same for those with passive conflicts. You'll probably start to see some familiar behaviors here. Then it'll explain how everyone has commitment issues to some extent, both passive and active, and how it's only a problem if it interferes with your relationships.

You say to yourself, great. This is all very reassuring. So what do I do about it?

For the next 200 pages (it's about 300 pages total), the book offers NO practical advice. Instead it begins to use "commitmentphobic" as a dirty word, and starts to tell stories of relationships. You read story after story thinking "Hey, I see some of myself here, I wonder what they'll recommend to resolve this situation...". You get to the end of the story and there's no advice, just another story. You get to the end of the chapter and there's no advice, just another chapter full of stories. And regardless of what they say, not all the stories are of commitmentphobic people.

The book also practices a lot of tough love. In several cases it appears to be saying "Anyone who is willing to commit to you is the person you should commit to. There is no perfect person, no person of your dreams, no one you should be holding out for. Growing up means giving up on your dreams and settling down."

Finally, the last few chapters of the book attempt to give some practical advice, but it ends up being contradictory. Here's what one of the last chapters said, boiled down to a few sentences.

Acknowledge you have commitment issues, but don't talk to your partner about them. Ok, do talk to your partner about them, but don't cry. Actually, don't talk to your partner about them because that'll create more intimacy. Wait, do talk to them about it, but only when you're ready to break up with them.

What????

In the end the only real practical piece of advice they give is to get counseling. Not very useful after buying the book and reading 300 pages.

I'll save you trouble and give you the good stuff out of the book. Notice how short it is.

Active avoiders pursue hard at first and then draw away, putting up boundaries. Passive avoiders fall hard, but always for the wrong people (active avoiders). You're falling for those people because it's "safe" to love them, because you know it won't turn into a real relationship. No one necessarily falls into one camp or the other, you can switch between relationships or during a single relationship.

Everyone has commitment issues to some extent. If your issues hurt your relationships, take a cold hard look at your patterns and try to manage them. If you can't, seek counseling.

See? I did all the whole book in less than a page.

5 out of 5 stars You may have a fear of commitment and not even realize it!.......2007-05-15

I bought this book b/c my boyfriend and I were dating several years and it seemed when one of us wanted to move forward and commit, the other was holding back, then we would flip-flop - reading this book enlightened us so much on why that is and why we behave certain ways in our relationships and choose the partners we choose! Very interesting info to say the least!! I'm only 1/3 through but it's a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Shines a piercing light on the situation.......2007-04-16

"Am I afraid of commitment because of something about this particular relationship (in which case maybe I should find a new one?) or because I have a problem with commitment in general (in which case maybe I should hold onto this amazing person by my side--but who does have a few things I don't like)?"

If that question resonates with you some way, then you should get this book.

As someone who struggles with commitment in relationships and many other areas of my life, this book has, in a lot of ways, my number. I've always struggled with decisions, from what to do with my life to what to order on a restaurant menu. And deciding on the person you're going to spend your life with has to be the decision of all decisions. In a way, it was nice to read it and feel validated... "hey look at all these other people who are struggling with the same thing I am". The book really illustrates the different kind of dynamics that can happen in a "commitment-phobic" relationship. This book provides knowledge, and knowledge is power. That's a hackneyed expression, but truthfully, in order to beat this you have to first know what "this" is, and this book lays it out pretty clearly. So that is at least a first step.

I read the book with great anticipation hoping that the author, a self-proclaimed commitment phobe, would show me the light, show me how to "fix" me. Unfortunately, that's where the book falls short. After exposing commitment phobia in all it's confusing, painful, pathetic, paralyzing, and humblizing detail, the basic advice seems to be for anyone involved with such a person to stay away. It's like I was reading the majority of the book thinking this is wonderfully insightful and it's addressing both the commitment-phobe and the person with the commitment-phobe, and then, near the end, the book seems to abandon the person with the commitment-phobia and only addresses the person-with-the-commitment-phobic-person (the so called passive partner)-- I almost felt like I was being turned against. The one piece of advice that it seems to offer the active commitment phobe is to get therapy.

In a nutshell, ideally the book would:
1. Clearly identify the problem
2. Offer steps to fix it

It does #1 quite well but left me wanting a LOT more for #2. Still I recommend it. Another book which offers more in the way of #2 is "Getting to Commitment" by the same authors (although still not as much as I'd like). "Getting to Commitment" is a little more sympathetic to the actively commitment phobic person. What I'd love to see the author do is write a much more autobiographical book on how he overcame his own commitment phobia in his life (Steven Carter is married now).

5 out of 5 stars I can either laugh or cry.......2007-03-11

As I am reading this book, I am laughing aloud at how utterly insane, yet true it all is! The authors really nail down the absolutely contradictory behavior of people with committment issues. I am seeing my dating life pass before my eyes and, in light of this book, it is not pretty! I have been working on myself long enough to have a healthy sense of humor, so this book is not only opening my eyes WIDE but tickling my funny bone as well.

If you are ready to be humbled and ready to change, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-06

This book was great for me. It helped me get through alot of things not only that but, understand the way I work sometimes in why.

Stevens and Wunder have put together a book that not only contains great information about pleasing a woman, but also addresses the subject with sensitivity and depth. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Note the word "tips" in the title..........2007-07-13

The title says "tips" and I believe tips to be suggestions. This book is all about trying to enhance pleasure for women no matter who is providing it to them. If I need my car worked on I take it to a mechanic. If I want to know how to please a WOMAN I'll certainly ask WOMEN. Remember that women view pleasure differently than men do on most occasions. If you're a man or a woman and you need some "tips" you can't go wrong with this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not the guide I was hoping for........2006-11-19

Being a married man a looking to keep our relationship exciting, I was hoping for some insight into the complex ways of the female body. But instead of a guide to potential pleasure I received a pocket book guide of life-facts. Don't get me wrong, the information was very informative and I did learn, it is just not what I had expected to be reading. This is definitely a guide for women, not men.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for All Who Love Women.......2006-10-14

Lesbian Sex Tips is exactly the kind of in-depth, no-holds barred, entertaining sex manual that everyone who loves women should have by their bedside. And that includes ALL women-loving-women, bi, genderqueer, transgendered, intersexed - you name it, this book is inclusive for all. Heck, even the men that pick it up can always use more education - and this manual doesn't discriminate. To which, I say hell yeah! Too many sex guides don't take into account the wide spectrum of human sexuality. Not true for this book. Hands-on, and that should be taken quite literally, this is one of the best sex guides out there for those who desire to put the heat back in the bedroom, or for those just getting started in the wondrous world of loving women.

5 out of 5 stars gentle, caring and informative.......2006-08-23

This book is full of valuable information for anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation. A helpful guide for individuals who are interested in learning more about themselves and others.

5 out of 5 stars LOTS of info for one book, and that's a good thing.......2006-07-31

I thought before I read this book that I would know most of what was in it already...but I had no idea of the scope of what was inside. I'm impressed. The authors went from a to z, not leaving any stone unturned. The chapters on anatomy, safe sex and making love are well written. And I personally am glad they included the chapters on communication, abuse, counselling, etc. The rights & discrimination section, especially Heterosexual Privileges, I found intriguing. It is obviously based on life in the USA, and as the authors are Americans, that would make sense. Things are a little different here in Canada, but there are still some similarities. Including the list of resources at the end of the book was a great idea...I'm sure many people will find this helpful. I'm positive that many people will find the WHOLE book helpful.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, but repetitive.......2007-09-30

This is my second attempt at a Lisa Jackson book. I hated the first one I read, but I picked up "Almost Dead" to give her a second chance...and upon immediately realizing it was a sequel, I went out and bought this one.

While the book was suspenseful, it was really hard to give it any more stars. The characters were unlikeable (especially the main characters), and more than anything, the book was so repetitive! Three times in two pages we were told that Marla's jaw muscles had atrophied from being wired shut. We had to read through pages and pages and pages of Marla and Nick's thoughts on how wrong it was to want each other. Frankly, I think the book could've been 100 pages shorter and not left any of the important plot points out -- if only the author hadn't kept repeating things over and over.

2 out of 5 stars UGH!.......2007-08-28

I admit the suspense was good and the mystery was intriguing and hard to figure out. It kept me reading. However, as a romantic suspense, it didn't come close to cutting it for me. The characters had little to no redeaming qualities, including the main characters. Just when the reader has been sucked in to thinking the heroine was an innocent victim it is revealed she is no better than the rest of the disturbed and dysfunctional characters. The romance was nothing more than satisfying their lust, as Nick supposedly was disgusted with and hated Marla for dumping him for his brother. It was difficult to buy into his love for her when he believed she had jumped from lover to lover and even with Monty and was supposedly disgusted by all that. Then he finds out what she really did and was again disgusted, as was this reader, and he forgave and forgot with the snap of a finger. I felt sorry for the baby who was grabbed and snatched from one to another and was held at gunpoint and threatened, it was too much for me.

I prefer a story where I actually like the main characters and can root for them to be together. This one was not it. Otherwise, I am left not caring if anyone gets their comeupance and in this case the whole cast should have been sent away to the loony bin.

BTW, has anyone noticed how the characters in Jackson's books all smoke all the time and it is brought into focus. It was to the point I could smell the stale smoke on each character and turned my stomach. It is the 21st century and it is no longer classy or vogue to smoke as it was in earlier decades before.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner!.......2007-07-09

I LOVE Lisa Jackson! I can't pick a favorite but this one is close to the top! Just the right recipe of romance, thrills and mystery. I didn't put it down!
