Book Description

Stewart's CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Fifth Edition has the mathematical precision, accuracy, clarity of exposition and outstanding examples and problem sets that have characterized the first four editions. Stewart retains the focus on problem solving and the pedagogical system that has made the book a favorite of students and instructors in a wide variety of colleges and universities throughout the world. The structure of CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Fifth Edition, remains largely unchanged, the sole exception being that the review of inverse trigonometric functions has been moved from an appendix to Section 1.6. Stewart has made hundreds of small improvements: new examples, additional steps in existing examples, updating of data in existing examples and exercises, new phrases and margin notes to clarify the exposition, references to other sources and web sites, redrawn art, and references to the TEC CD (Tools for Enriching Calculus). These refinements ensure that students and instructors using this text are using the best resource available. The number of pages in the book, however, remains unchanged from the 4th edition. This edition is complemented with and expanded array of supplementary material for both students and instructors. These best-selling texts differ from CALCULUS, Fifth Edition in that the exponential and logarithmic functions are covered earlier. In the Fifth Edition of CALCULUS, EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS these functions are introduced in the first chapter and their limits and derivatives are found in Chapters 2 and 3 at the same time as polynomials and other elementary functions.

I ordered this book a month before classes started but it didn't arrive until about 2 weeks after classes started. If you are looking to get it order it early.
Other than that is in perfect condition and I am not having any issues with it.

How can anyone possible B*tch at such an amazing book. Clear, insightful, helpful, relevant etc...etc.... don't forget that the author threw in proofs for anyone who wants to be math major. O did I mention how f-in clear this text is. Here's the deal, people who don't like this book fall into two categories: wannabe engineers who hate the fact that they have to take calculus in the first place and math majors/mathematicians who say that not enough theory is covered, well duh that's why the course called "advanced calculus" was invented. Let's face the fact's fokes, there is a reason why community colleges and ivy league schools alike use this text because its student friendly and is designed with COMMEN sense, something I might add is lacking in the mathematical community but definitely not lacking in this book.
P.S. Thanks DR.S I love math because of you

I just want to let people know that in the used section, the PDF version that is for sale is probably a copyright infringement, but not only that, if you do a search for 'calculus james stewart pdf' on google, you'll most probably find a link to said PDF. Don't get duped.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive look at Calculus.......2007-02-17

So far, only four chapters into the text, Calculus: Early Transcendentals appears to be a well-rounded introduction to Calculus. The text is arranged in a familiar manner where information can be readily found. The only bad thing I have to say about it thus far is that it doesn't always explain steps in its example problems in as much detail as I would sometimes like.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for self study.......2007-07-19

I am thrilled with this book. I think all the bad reviews are from kids who have to take this subject in college who's hearts aren't really in it. To be honest, I can't believe all the negative stuff people are saying about this book!! It is really quite easy to read. Some parts are more difficult to understand, but hey: That's to be expected when studying Calculus! If you are persistent, you will suceed. And Stewart's makes learning the difficult concepts as easy as possible. If you like math, (even it you aren't that good at it), you very likely will LOVE this book. It's a dream. If you don't like math, or don't want to learn calculus, you will probably hate it. I am a previously home-schooled 20 year old and I started studying calculus when I was 16, using Saxon's Calculus textbook. It was a great intro to this text, which reads at a higher level. I enjoyed calculus so much that I am self-studing this book just for the fun of it.

Bottom line: GET THIS BOOK! If you like math, you will love this book!

3 out of 5 stars It doesn't matter what people think, if you need to buy it..........2007-07-09

If your instructor assigns the class this textbook, then you have to get it.

It doesn't matter what people think about it, you just have to get it.

I just searched around and found a torrent. Paid zero. I would recommend that to everyone else, also, search for the solutions manual with evens and odds.

1 out of 5 stars commercial or academic?.......2007-06-22

Teaching math for engineering students is what I did for the past 35 years and still do. This book is heavy (~3.5 kg), expensive and my students find it very frustrating!!. Their english (mine too) is at most their second language and it is very painful and agonizing for them to go through it page after page to get an idea that can be gotten in much fewer statements. I think this book is commercially written rather than academically.

I'm not the type to read a math book, but since I'm starting to take my education seriously, I'm glad there is a math book written with depth and easy to follow explanations.

Book Description

Stewart's CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, Third Edition offers a streamlined approach to teaching calculus, focusing on major concepts and supporting those with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS is highly regarded because it has successfully brought peace to departments that were split between reform and traditional approaches to teaching calculus. Not only does the text help reconcile the two schools of thought by skillfully merging the best of traditional calculus with the best of the reform movement, it does so with innovation and meticulous accuracy.

I taught this class with this book several times, and it makes the material more difficult. It is one of the poorest textbooks available for this class.

5 out of 5 stars It's actually worth the huge price tag.......2006-07-06

I was turned on to Stewart through his excellent multivariable calculus text. Having been so impressed by that book I decided to fork out the bucks for the this text. Yea - I know - the material in this text is a pre-requisite to the other but I own a kazillion mathematics books and at this point in my life, I've been through various levels of Calc so many times that order is irrelevent. Anyway, for me, this book is really worth the huge price tag. I frequently open it up and read it for pleasure. Sick, huh? But it's that good! Stewart is great at chosing examples to work out fully for your eddification. He also is great at selecting interesting and illustrative problems that aren't presumptuous of the student's abilities at clairvoyance (unlike some other textbook authors I could mention). Lastly, the everything about this book reeks of quality: from the mathematical content (btw - it has excellent graphics!) and Stewart's obvious underlying teaching abilities to the physical characteristics of the binding and page materials. The book is a jewell.

Well, I could go on but you probably get the idea. I wish J. Stewart would do a textbook of similar quality on Linear Algebra or better yet, Differential Geometry! That would really destroy the myth that money can't buy happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Good Calculus Book.......2005-09-22

I've learned calculus long time ago, but recently I need it to read a financial book. This book worked for me. I am surprised to know that calculus is easy due to the book's step by step explanation. This book is good not only for readers who learn calculus for the first time but also for poeple who have some experiences. Depneding on your level and purpose, you can read this book like a novel or do all exercises. Only problem I can think of is that this book may not be suitable for people who need to learn pure mathmatics because definitions are not so strict.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality, no LabMentor CD bunded with Amazon.......2007-08-29

Its not Amazon's fault that this book isn't really good. The information contained inside it is out of date, written during the time of XP's release.

The major drawback is this book does not contain the LabMentor Online Lab disk, which prevents me from completing most of the course work for me class.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy book!!.......2007-05-31

This book is awful, asks questions in chapter reviews that are either not in the book or in another chapter. I wasted untold hours of my life in this book.I have strongly recomended that the school I attend stop using this worthless piece of trash.

1 out of 5 stars Buy something else.......2007-02-18

Badly organized and practice questions are compatible with the material. One minute, the author is talking about one subject, then the next, the author changes the subject. Then later in the book the author will bring up a separate section aimed and explaining more of the first topic that was being discussed earlier in the book.

The questions on the end of the chapter are mostly based on interpretation of material rather than understanding. When you search the book for answers, you wont find the exact answer within the reading, you'll find material about the answer, then its up to you on how well you'll interpret it to come up with the right answer. The author also seems to contradict himself/herself, or purposely confuse you. When discussing SYSPREP, one minute the author says that its a system imaging program, and the next the author says that SYSPREP not and that SYSPREP requires third-party imaging programs.

It seems as if the author also wants you to do extra in-depth research on material, because some of the answers to the questions you don't get unless you experiment with it.

2 out of 5 stars Worth avoiding.......2007-01-25

MS Windows' worst critics consider the OS to be a series series of poorly executed upgrades and patches to the original release. Whether or not it is the case with the software, it is particularly true of this book. Obviously starting life as an MSCSE manual for an earlier OS, the Guide reads like it has been undergoing a series of fragmentary, ad hoc rewrites in an effort to keep it relevant at the lowest possible cost to the publisher. There are many sections where the book gives in-depth coverage to outdated technologies and glosses over (or ignores) essential current topics. The writing is uninspired to say the least; it reads like an old IBM COBOL manual from the 70's. The writer is constantly falling into a maddeningly passive voice and ignoring many other rules of technical writing style. In spite of the copious errata files available for download from the publisher, there are still a disconcerting number of typos, errors and omissions. The book is clearly aimed at an audience intent on memorizing facts needed to pass an exam rather than helping the reader understand the OS. If you're a student and see this book on a syllabus, try to find another class. For the price, the Microsoft Press book is a far better value.

4 out of 5 stars Good XP Pro book.......2007-01-13

I also bought this book for a tech class. I got a lot of information about XP Pro from it. I found it easy to read despite it being a tech book. I especially liked the activities in each chapter. There must have been about 7 activities in each chapter, some had more and others maybe 6 activies. It gave me a chance to try out what I was learning. I found the review questions, the vocabulary lists, and the summaries at the end of each chapter useful in helping me retain the information I learned. I give it a 4 star because I had to tape the book binding and a few pages that became loose.

3 out of 5 stars Alright but not great.......2006-09-26

There are tons of textbooks on Precalculus like this one out there. Larson's is just another equally good textbook on the subject of calculus and Precalculus. However, I see no much uniqueness and innovations in any of the calculus books like this type. Richard Feynman, one of America's greatest physicists, once said most of the popular textbooks (on physics) were somewhat mediocre. I would recommend those who are aspired for an austere treatment of elementary mathematics, ie, pre-calculus and beginning calculus, to go for the book High-school mathematics by some Russian mathematicians. ISBN: 5030010114 This series is just so comprehensive with lucid explanations that every high school math teacher should take a look at it. It's both fun and benefitial to read books on math translated from another language.

5 out of 5 stars One of the top two precalculus texts available.......2005-03-15

There is a mind-numbing sameness to precalculus and calculus textbooks, and this book is more of the same. The coverage starts with real numbers, exponents, expressions and solving equations. The basic principles of functions, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, solving systems of equations, sequences, series, counting and probability, analytic geometry and limits follow this. I personally can do without the chapter on limits, when I teach precalculus, I am hard pressed to cover the other material. There is plenty of time to cover limits in calculus and it provides a better context. There are a large number of exercises at the end of each section and solutions to the odd-numbered ones are included in an appendix. As appears to be the case with many books, some of the exercises could have been left out with no decline in quality. At times I suspect there is the mathematical equivalent of an "arms race" to see how many exercises can be included at the end of a chapter.
The previous paragraph could be used to describe nearly every precalculus text on the planet, so it fits into the category of obvious, but necessary. Therefore, the key point is what makes this book different from the competition. The answer is not much. The approach is the standard statement of the new material followed by a series of worked examples, which is also the fundamental strategy used in all lower level math books. Short biographical asides of some of the major historical figures in mathematics are interjected on a regular basis. I like that, but wonder how often the students read them. What is different about this book is that the quality of the writing is somewhat better than most. In a field where there is very little to differentiate the texts, that is enough to make me rank this book in the top two precalculus books that are available.

5 out of 5 stars Precalculus -.......2003-09-13

I'd say it's a rather interesting book, especially concerning the set of problems at the end of each chapter. Covers basics of linear algebra and preparation for calculus, with reasonable amount of problems and examples. Clear prose. Warns about mistakes to avoid.

Brief biographies of prominent mathematicians are introduced in the margin sometimes. Occasionally refers to external sources that you may find interesting.

I'm giving it 5 stars because this book is rather non-traditional. The authors undoubtedly wanted to introduce it as an interesting subject and does cover needed preparatory material for calculus.

From the moment he entered medical school in the late 1970s, people around Michael Swango thought he was a little odd. But even though he expounded upon his obsessions with violent death and serial killings to anybody within earshot, almost nobody connected him to the string of deaths among patients under his care. When an investigation finally took place at the Ohio State medical center, hospital administrators sympathized with Swango--against the direct testimony of patients and nurses--and seemed more concerned with how revelations of a murderous doctor might affect their public image than with the safety of their clients. And, remarkably, even after being released from prison in Illinois, where he had been convicted of (nonfatally) poisoning several of his coworkers, Swango was able to obtain positions at hospitals in South Dakota and New York. When American authorities finally started to pursue his case, he fled the country and began plying his trade in Zimbabwe. In June 1998, after being captured during an attempt to reenter the United States, he was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison--on fraud charges related to his employment in New York.

The truly frightening aspect of Blind Eye is not the relentless chain of murders, but the ease with which Swango was able to repeatedly slip through the cracks in the medical system, simply by lying about the nature of his felony conviction. James B. Stewart methodically traces every step of Swango's career, laying out a straightforward narrative with all the suspense of a well-crafted thriller. Although attempts to "explain" Swango's behavior through psychopathology and a historical rise in the incidences of serial killing derail the ending somewhat, Blind Eye is still a must-read for true crime buffs--or anyone who enjoys good journalism. --Ron Hogan

Book Description

No one could believe the handsome young doctor might be a serial killer. Wherever he was hired -- in Ohio, Illinois, New York, South Dakota -- Michael Swango at first seemed the model physician. Then his patients began dying under suspicious circumstances.

At once a gripping read and a hard-hitting look at the inner workings of the American medical system, Blind Eye describes a professional hierarchy where doctors repeatedly accept the word of fellow physicians over that of nurses, hospital employees, and patients -- even as horrible truths begin to emerge. With the prodigious investigative reporting that has defined his Pulitzer Prize-winning career, James B. Stewart has tracked down survivors, relatives of victims, and shaken coworkers to unearth the evidence that may finally lead to Swango's conviction.

Combining meticulous research with spellbinding prose, Stewart has written a shocking chronicle of a psychopathic doctor and of the medical establishment that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Black Eye for the Medical Profession.......2007-01-29

This is a fascinating story about how the medical establishment did not detect a psycopath in their midst. Even after detection, they allowed him to continue as a doctor.

Even more upsetting was the failure of the faculty of the college of medicine at Southern Illinois University to detect and fail incompetent students. These students, including Michael Swango, were allowed to continue; even after episodes of total incompetence. If these policies are common at other medical schools, it offers an explanation for the large number of substandard physicians.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-09

Not only was this book a great read, it also displays the significant truth about the world of medicine. This type of behavior (ignoring what's in front of you) happens everyday in medicine. All credentialing personnel should be required to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone who receives medical care.......2006-11-29

I was given "Blind Eye" when I first began working at a physician monitoring program as a clinician. At the time, I was under the impression that because physicians have so much responsibility to "do no harm," they would automatically report themselves or fellow physicians if they believed they were impaired mentally, physically or emotionally. How wrong I was!

"Blind Eye" represents the epitome of how our medical system supports physicians, even when they are dangerous to themselves and others. Through a painstaking and exhaustive review of the life and career of Dr. Michael Swango, James B. Stewart illustrates how easy it was for a medical doctor to manipulate nurses, colleagues, administrators, patients, and even his own family into believing that he was a competent physician. Stewart further demonstrates how the "good old boy" system is alive and well in America, in which doctors look the other way when something seems wrong, even when evidence to the contrary is right in front of them.

If I had not read this book, knowing it is a true story, I probably would not have believed that a physician could truly get away with murder; now I am truly convinced that this is, unfortunatly, the case. "Blind Eye" should be required reading for every person who works with or sees a personal physician.

4 out of 5 stars terrific read....uh, except for............2006-08-29

Stewart's coverage of the l'affaire Swango is exemplary--one of the best true crime reads in the last ten years, this one....except...except for what I've found to be a common occurrence in books of this genre, namely, in this instance, that Michael Swango, not once, not twice, but probably 20 times, is described as "handsome": what's up with that? Swango looks like a cartoon horse, and in no sense of the word "handsome" is he, well, even slightly better than subpar in the looks department. Several b/w pix here document this guy's oversized choppers, narrow head, and so on. So why is this the case? Possibly to lure name actors into vying for the lead in a filming of this, and thus make the project more attractive in order to secure a better deal? That's the only thing I can think of and, as I say, this is a common problem in the true crime genre. SO: it's a five-star read, but docked a notch because, if the author continually overstates a major fact regarding the book's main character's appearance, the reader HAS to wonder, Hey, what other liberties are taken with the truth here? Be that as it may--a tip o' the hat to Stewart for his page-turning prose. Possibly the best book I've ever read about a poisoner, including the great works covering the infamous 19th and early 20th century cases, when poison was much in vogue.

4 out of 5 stars SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR...!!!!.......2006-08-21

THIS BOOK IS A GREAT POWER PACKED STORY OF HOW A SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR COULD GET AWAY WITH HIS MURDERS FOR SO LONG, AND BE COVERED UP BY THE "DOCTORS PROFESSIONAL PROTECT EACH OTHER RULES" AGAIN AND AGAIN. IT IS VERY SCARY HOW U CAN NOT EVEN TRUST A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL WHEN IN THE HOSPITAL. IT CERTAINLY WILL MAKE ME QUESTION ANYTHING I AM GIVEN OR INJECTED WITH NEXT TIME I AM IN THE HOSPITAL. A MUST READ IF U HAVE WONDERED HOW MEDICAL "ACCIDENTS" HAPPEN!!

3 out of 5 stars Inconsistent.......2004-12-10

This text, though very readable, teaches too much through example problems as opposed to actually explaining the information in the text. Presentation of some topics (chapter 6 particularly) was very poor. Some chapters were out of place (chapter 9 on differential equations, which should have been placed right before the last chapter).

5 out of 5 stars DO NOT buy earlier editions for class--NOT same problems........2004-10-24

Hey, this isn't a review. I just want to let you know that the people who claim that the fourth edition is the "same content" are trying to rip you off. The fourth edition is NOT the same as the fifth edition. The homework problems are NOT the same. If you get the fourth edition, you will not be able to complete your assignments for class if the instructor gives assignments out of the book.

These dishonest people are just trying to get you to pay lots of money for an old edition of a textbook they can't resell at their campus bookstore anymore. If you want the fourth edition, you can get it a lot cheaper under the actual listing for the fourth edition.

Don't be fooled!

3 out of 5 stars this coming from a student.......2004-10-22

Having taken 3 Calculus classes in sequence at my university with this book and having used one chapter of this book in my 4th math class that I am currently in (differential equations), I would say that I've used most of this book. Let's just say that this book needs a professor to go along with it. There's really not much of a chance, unless you're really smart, that you can only use this book with no other study aids and understand all of the concepts presented. This book really is made for your math professor to more fully explain. Having said that, I must add that the CD-ROM enclosed is GREAT. I guess if you don't have your professor to go over the finer details of some of the more vague concepts, then this is the next best thing. The sounds-like-a-grad-student voice that explains each chapter in great detail is easy to understand and makes most concepts pretty clear. I have to say that this CD-ROM is saving me on my midterm.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome details to everything.......2003-09-07

This was the book that I had for my first year calculus course.
It was amazing how much detail they put in.
Everytime time that I didn't understand something(such as where it was derived from, when it would be used), the book had a detailed explanations and/or proofs to accompany it.
This is probably the only textbook that I own that has never had a problem/theory/proof etc. that made me go "Where the heck did that come from?", or "How come I can't seem to apply it to any question that is supposed to be solved using it?".

In short, if you're like me and like detailed explanations on everything, you'll be very satisfied with this book.

If y = 5x, I give it y' thumbs up.

1 out of 5 stars An inferior textbook, though popular........2002-03-10

This is the early transcendentals version of Stewart's calculus. The title of the book is quite appropriate, in that to learn calculus well, one must transcend the Stewart approach early and often. I found my self reading another text (Simmon's Calculus and Analytic Geometry) as an antidote to this dry, disjointed, lifeless tome.

Stewart takes an inconsistent (sometimes rigorous, sometimes intuitive) approach toward teaching the calculus. It seems as if he has attempted to be all things to all people. Though he may have attempted to present the subject in both an intuitive (to motivate the typical student) and rigorous (to satisfy the professor) manner, he failed to deliver on either.

The text is replete with pretty diagrams and some historical diversions, which read as canned, trivial snippets. In spite of this eye candy, the mathematical exposition is poor. Most proofs read as shorthand notes to one who already understands the subject. Is it analysis or basic calculus? Stewart seems to have a schizophrenic writing manner. On the one hand, he presents examples in "workbook" (i.e. Schaum's outline) form, so that if one wishes to solve a particular sort of problem, one might find it here. On the other hand, he does not seem able to meld problem solving with rigor in a coherent manner. So an abbreviated proof is done, with several relevant steps (relevant, that is, to the beginner) omitted. What function does this serve for a pre-analysis student? A proof that might take 10 steps is presented in 4. What is the point of this approach? Perhaps so as to ward off accusations that a particular subject was not touched upon.

The book is expensive and bloated. Though the "official" rendering of the page numbers is 781, there are approximately 130 other pages devoted to appendices (some as advertisements for other, i.e. ancillary, materials). Note, this text is intended for a 2 semester Calculus sequence. It seems inappropriate, perhaps fraudulent, that Stewart devoted 900+ expensive pages for his task, and yet failed to present the material in an interesting and efficient manner. Given his insistence upon this secondary material, I ask Stewart - did you ever intend for this book to be relatively self-contained for the serious first year scholar, or did you expect the professor or CD-ROM to fill in the gaps in your exposition? Some alternative texts: Simmons, Anton, Stein, Thomas/Finney.

Book Description

A number-one bestseller from coast to coast, Den of Thieves tells, in masterfully reported detail, the full story of the insider-trading scandal that nearly destroyed Wall Street, the men who pulled it off, and the chase that finally brought them to justice. Pulitzer Prize winner James B. Stewart shows for the first time how four of the biggest names on Wall Street -- Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, Martin Siegel, and Dennis Levine -- created the greatest insider-trading ring in financial history and almost walked away with billions, until a team of downtrodden detectives triumphed over some of America's most expensive lawyers to bring this powerful quartet to justice.

Based on secret grand jury transcripts, interviews, and actual trading records, and containing explosive new revelations about Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky written especially for this paperback edition, Den of Thieves weaves all the facts into an unforgettable narrative -- a portrait of human nature, big business, and crime of unparalleled proportions.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Den of Thieves.......2007-05-01

This book was very insightful about the misgivings of some powerful financial magnates. However, the writing is poor and the author rushes through parts of the story that leaves the reader with more questions than answers. It is written by a professional journalist and not a novelist, so it reads like a newspaper article, which can be highly condensed for space. I would recommend the predator's ball. It is a much better account. And if you are interested in what Micheal Milken is up to these days check out The Milken Institute. The guy is still a billionaire.

3 out of 5 stars A cluster of information and innuendo reporting.......2007-03-07

This book is a useful source of what happened in certain corners of Wall Street in the 80s, whith an emphasis of only the bad and ignoring some of the positive effects that the same characters had in and out of the business community and while committing - and occasionally allegedly committing - crimes.

Unfortunately, there are simply too many instances where motives or instances assumed to have occured in a certain fashion are explained as fact.

I recommend that people interested in this topic read Predators' Ball first.

2 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand for a non investment banker.......2007-03-07

The book takes you deep into the investment banking world . If you dont know your Morgan Stanley from your Goldman Sachs then this book will make little sense to you. There is a laundry list of investment banking firms and bankers mentioned hastily throughout the book. They all just blended into one thing since I did not have any deep understanding of what these firms actually do and how they are different from each other . So I would not recommend this for the layman.

4 out of 5 stars The chronicles of a decade of greed .......2007-02-22

This book comes almost straight out of the courtroom and newspapers. The author mixed it with imagination and good writing into something that looks more like a good movie script than a story about corruption. James is a Wall Street Journal reporter and he knows his work very well; everything in the book is fact based and documented from public sources. Den of Thieves is an extensive collection of stories that follow individual destinies coming together in one of the most extraordinary decade in Wall Street history. When you read the book you feel more like you sit in front of a TV and someone is playing in front of you pieces of recordings made skilfully over a period of several years. In fact, you get into an intriguing action from the very beginning and the suspense keeps you awake for quite a while. There is so much detail that you will be amazed at of how James managed to put all together so well.

The book is divided in two parts: Above the Law and The Chase. You get to see both sides of the story, both of them full of drama. I did not realise that the prosecutors had such a hard time until I read this book. It is not only a matter of legal technicality that explains some of the difficulties the law enforcements officers experienced in putting their case together (so they act "legally"), but it is also a matter of political interests that played such an important role in obstructing the application of the law. There are names more or less popular, some of them bordering celebrity status that come together and clash in a fight driven by conflicting interests. You read about people like Michael Milken, the guru of junk bonds, Ivan Boesky, the mysterious arbitrageur, Rudolph Giuliani, the famous mayor of NY, Martin Siegel, the investment banker that perfected the "poison pill" and many others. The law prevailed in the end but with such a great effort and pain, that one could not really imagine winners getting any joy out of this, maybe just a sense of relief that was all over.

Overall this is a good book, it is easy to read, fast paced, and not technical at all. I wish it had more clarity in marking the dates. Sometimes is difficult to understand the succession of events and see clearly what caused what. You will need occasionally to go back a few pages just to get the sequence straight. Although the story is about people and James made an effort to build characters by putting thoughts into their heads as the events unfold, I had the impression that some sections where very much taken from court archived notes. Overall, Den of Thieves is a good book that you can use to travel back in time and understand what happened during 80's, the decade of greed.

4 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2007-02-07

I totally got the whole feel of the era, the industry and the crime that happened. My only complaint is its too long. Could have dropped a good 100 pages.

I am taking Calc II and am using this book. This book is horrible! I missed a lecture and when I tried doing the homework I got stuck. There are no example like the examples. I am here on this site to buy companion book so that I can do better on my homework. I wish they would stop using this book at university level courses.

1 out of 5 stars Worst calculus text.......2006-10-25

I taught this class with this book several times, and it makes the material more difficult for students. It is one of the worst textbooks available for Calculus.

5 out of 5 stars This is a _stellar_ text!.......2005-12-02

I've been swamped with homework in general, and have been behind in many classes. So, often times I won't have the foundations to understand the current concept my calc teacher is explaining in class. However, with this calc book, the explanations are so clear, and the in-text examples and practice problems so plentiful, that I can truly say I'm confident in my calculus skills, even without any teacher instruction.

Which isn't to say you should [AP] advanced procrastinate like I'm doing right now. But..

It's really a superb book, and possibly my favorite HS/technically college-prep textbook ever.

The only downside, though, is the online supplementary material doesn't seem to work for me no matter what I do. Maybe it needs teacher intervention for things to show up? It seems like it'd be a great source of extra problems, but all I can seem to find are flash videos for a couple sections a chapter. Oh well.

But again, this text really makes me happy. Get it, it's def worth your time, and a spot on your bookshelf.
