4 out of 5 stars Seven Suspensfull Scenes.......2007-04-12

Seven of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous films are brought to life by Kees Moerbeek's complex paper engineering. Each of seven spreads is a large montage of scenes from the film and includes a brief synopsis of the plot. You may also lift a flap and view the scene in which Hitchcock has placed himself in the movie, something he did in almost every film he made. This is a must-have for any Hitchcock fan, and for pop-up collectors as well

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tribute to the master!.......2007-03-22

A visual delight & work of art! Though I would have liked more text, this would probably have detracted from the book's artistry & visual appeal; as it is, the text that is present is full of quirky facts & fits quite nicely with the images. Very unique & fun book!

5 out of 5 stars Hitchcock Book.......2007-01-19

When I read a review about this book in the Washington Post, I thought it would make a good present for my son because Hitchcock is one of his favorite directors. My son does not, however, enjoy reading, so I wasn't sure if he would want the book. Much to my pleasure he told me it was one of his favorite Christmas presents he received.

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly impressed.......2007-01-19

I gave my GF this pop-up book for Xmas. She is a big Hitchcock fan. I thought she would be really impressed but she just briefly flipped through and barely raised an eyebrow. The other day I saw it buried under a pile of junk in her room. It's a good idea but not all that interesting to look at.
I had read a glowing review of the book and the techincal genius of the "paper engineers" who constructed it in the Wall St. Journal. While some of the displays are amusing, ultimately, I was not all that impressed and found the report in the WSJ to be exaggerated.
Makes a good coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-01-10

This book is so unique and a must for any Hitchcock movie fan. It gave great info on the movies it covered. I just wish it had "all" of his movies!

An Excellent collection of short stories to keep you in suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend to all short stories fans.......2006-02-24

I adore short stories so I was delighted to discover The Tales of Terror. I have over 200 books with short stories, so I was not surprised to find 2 or 3 stories I've "met" before. But I enjoyed reading them again, and there still remained a long list of some 55 fresh ones.

I immensely enjoyed re-reading A Cabin in the Woods by John Coyne. One must admire author's masterful way of increasing the suspense till culmination. Without revealing too much, it is a Man-against-Nature type of confrontation, only with a twist that will surprise you no matter what you happened to expect. I cannot speak for anybody else but for me this story is a gem.

There are a few stories about travelling, for those who like mystery and suspense "on the go" (Career Man by James Holding, The Perfidy of Professor Blake by Libby McCall, Sea Change by Henry Slesar and The Grateful Thief by Patrick O'Keeffe, of which the latter two take place on a sea cruise), a few newspaper tales (The Graveyard Shift by William P. McGivern, Man Bites Dog by Donald Honig,, The Death Desk by S.S. Rafferty and (sort of) also Theodore Mathieson's Second Spring).

Special mention for being truly very chilly deserve A Bottle of Wine (Borden Deal), Never Trust an Ancestor (Michael Zuroy), Sparrow on a String (Alice Scanlan Reach), That So Called Laugh (Frank Sisk), The Joker (by Betty Ren Wright), Death is a Lonely Lover (Roberty Colby) and Scheme for Destruction (Pauline C. Smith).

There were also some clever plots taking place in the ruthless world of business (Cora's Raid, Free Advice Incorporated, Hard Sell, Bank Night, The Prosperous Judds, The Time Before the Crime, The Real Criminal and the famous, ingenious Dettweiler Solution by Lawrence Block)

Last but not least, I vey much enjoyed reading several indispensable family cosies (We're Really Not That Kind of People (Samuel W. Taylor), A Very Special Talent (Margaret B. Maron) and the opening story of the book, Killed by Kindnes (Nedra Tyre). I should mention also Private Little War by William Brittain about a feuding teacher and pupil where one of them is ready to go too far. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by contributions of some authors never encountered before.

Maybe, like me, you will not like all stories to the same extent but this book - with its 631 pages - is doubtlessly good value for money and will bring you many enjoyable moments of suspense.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gay vampire tales of mystery.......2007-08-15

In the first story, by William J Mann and entitled His Hunger, Jeremy's investigations take him to the mysterious recluse Bartholomew Craven. When he eventually locates Bartholomew's weird house he finds himself held prisoner, and subject to strange erotic dreams involving handsome men, and at the mercy of Bartholomew.

Michael Thomas Ford's Sting is a captivating mystery. Ben Hodge, leaving behind him the tragedy of his lover's death, has just moved to Downing where he is the new librarian. It is not long before he learns of mysterious killings that have occurred in the town's history and continue today. His interest in these killings and the mysterious Titus Durham could be very dangerous; or could it just prove to be the chance of a new life for him.

In the third story Bradon's Bite by Sean Wolfe, we encounter father and son vampires. Bradon lives with his over protective vampire father Victor, but Bradon is half vampire and half human, his mother being human, although she supposedly died giving birth to him. All goes well even if Bradon is reluctant to take his blood until he comes of age and has to hunt for himself. This causes problems which result in Bradon seeking his own friends which in turn leads to the realisation that he is gay, but also to disaster on his first gay date. When his father learns Bradon' inclinations their relationship goes from bad to worse; but maybe Bradon has a solution, and maybe there are options that he is not aware of yet, and maybe there is someone he can love safely. The story starts of unremarkably yet quite charmingly with Victor trying to raise his five year old son, but gradually becomes more involving as the plot develops towards its satisfying conclusion. This interesting story is however let down a little by the at times rather stilted dialogue.

The final story, Devoured by Jeff Mann, Derek McClaine loses his lover Angus in1730 in a homophobic attack which he himself survived, then to become a vampire. Now in the present day he has found a lover who just might replace Angus, but when his new lover is similarly in jeopardy Derek is determined there will be no repeat of the fatal events of 1730. This well paced and interesting story provides occasional glimpses of Derek's life while following the present day events.

The four fairly substantial stories make for a varied and interesting collection of erotic vampire themed tales.

4 out of 5 stars Worth a read if you're a vampire nut.......2005-11-17

This book contains four novellas of male/male vampire romance.

I enjoyed the first story, "His Hunger" by William J. Mann for the atmosphere. It held my attention but fizzled out in the end and felt unfinished. Pesky questions keep popping into my head that were left unanswered but then I've been told I ask too many questions and am nosey ;)

"The Sting" is about a young guy who ditches his previous life after a painful loss to begin anew. He takes on a job as a librarian and begins to learn that there is something not quite right in his new town. It started out well but like the previous story sort of fizzled out towards the end. I can't say why without spoiling things for others so I'll only say it had a lot to do with the "villain" of the piece and leave it at that.

"Braden's Bite" was readable but the dialogue in the beginning was so cartoonish and baffoonish I could barely get past it. It improved but my notes say "interesting but soooo melodramatic" "sweetly romantic after a rough start".

"Devoured" was my favorite of the lot. Dark, deadly, sexy, edgy and poetic. Just the sort of story I most enjoy. The fact that the author incorporated wiccan sabbats throughout the story only made it all the more interesting. The relationship was nicely done too.

5 out of 5 stars Bruises say, remember my touch. remember.......2005-04-03

I love the vampire genre. So when I happened upon this book, I had to have it. I didn't know the authors, but Now I do. All the stories are unique in their own way. I enjoyed them all. BUT! My favorite novella was Jeff Mann's Devoured.

I truly relished every word. It was as if I was the camera following every move. The artful descriptions helped bring the story to life. I am enamoured by Derek and Matt. I will probably read this story over and over until the binding in the book breaks and I'll have to buy another book. laughs

It's given me so much insight into the lives of gay men. Thank you, Jeff Mann. I will be looking for other books by you. ASAP!

4 out of 5 stars chilling from the first bite.......2003-08-27

A thrilling, erotically charged page-turner with literary merit. Kudos especially to poet/essayist Jeff Mann. Mann delivers a tasty meal on every page, mixing erotic content with a rich, descriptive, poetic voice. His surroundings, ranging from the moors of Scotland to the city streets of NYC to the mountains of West Virginia, are nearly as "human" as his living (and dead) characters. Not simply slam-bam-bite-me-man erotica, and not for the faint of heart. Let's hear more from Mann's devilish Derek.

4 out of 5 stars A smorgasbord for the senses.......2003-08-19

Four different authors means a potpourri of styles and stories to choose from. From the archetypical "Barnabus" from the old "Dark Shadows" series to a new Lestat-like hero that hails from West Virginia via Scotland, this book offers variety, interesting twists, and...well, more than a smattering of sex.

William J. Mann pays homage to the 60's cult classic with an update for the new millennium. If gym bunnies are your fare, then Sean Wolfe offers an interesting twist that seems to coincide best with popular WB television fare. Two stories really stand out in this collection, however.

Michael Thomas Ford really shines in his unique twist on an old tale. Who knew those Razorback Mountains were fodder for such a captivating addition to vampire lore? Mr. Ford really shakes off his David-Sedaris-want-to-be style for a truly intriguing variation on what can sometimes be a stagnant genre. Hats off to Mr. Ford and all his names! Between panting hard you'll want to keep turning the pages to find out how this one, uhm, climaxes.

Jeff Mann's "Devoured" out-Rice's the honored diva in just 100+ pages. An epic novel captured in the space of a few chapters, Mr. Mann's lyrical prose follows a new vampire hero, Derek, from his inception in Scotland to the hills of West Virginia. Derek romps in what might be called, "a bit of the rough," which adds some great spice and thrill to what otherwise might have been a rather "twinkified" collection. Can't wait to find out what Derek gets up to next.

Buy it. Read it. Thank me later.

3 out of 5 stars FAST PACED (AND HORRIFIC) START..........2006-01-16

But then the story seems to lag. This story starts out with the brutal murder of an entire family, and Masterton clearly shows why he is one of the true masters of horror; but the story slows down, and it was difficult to finish this one. This is not one of Masterton's best works, BUT it is still a good novel.

5 out of 5 stars Gory to an extreme............2005-08-22

Action began in the beginning. Serial killings are happening in the San Francisco area are not any ordinary killings...they are actual rituals done with extreme caution as to bring about the resurrection of the fallen angel Beli Ya'al.

Larry Foggia is called in to solve the bizarre and downright horrible murders only to find something his mortal mind could no longer fathom....

This is another (need I say it?) great book by the MASTER of horror. I recommend this book to all horror fans along with all his other books.

2 out of 5 stars Begins effectively, but then it's all downhill.......2003-01-22

MASTER OF LIES is not one of Masterton's best. The opening chapter is TOO effective, one of the scariest thing's I've ever read. It begins with a man in a horned mask bursting into a police officer's family's apartment and nailing them to the floorboards, raping the wife and ends with the man about to kill their children. It takes a lot to scare me, but the first time I read the opening chapter of this book I was nearly sick; I was amazed that this could actually get published.
Anyhow, this act of sadism is part of a ritual to raise a demon known as Belial. Cop Larry Foggia is assigned the task of capturing the monster who killed his partner.
Unfortunately, after Masterton nearly scares you to death with chapter one, it's all downhill from there. He's written some great books, but this isn't one of his best in my opinion. But if you think nothing can scare you, just read the opener. This book is also known as BLACK ANGEL.

4 out of 5 stars Enthralling, Yet Absurd At Times.......2003-01-20

"Master of Lies" opens with a rather gruesome murder scene--of the Berry family being ritualistically killed by the Fog City Satan, a man who has killed five families in California so far in order to resurrect Belial (aka Beli Ya'al), a fallen angel. If you can get through this first chapter, then you can probably make it through the rest of the book.

Thirty-eight-year-old Detective Larry Foggia is assigned to the case because of his unconventional methods of solving crimes. His investigation leads him into the occult--seances, talking hands, shrinking people, and the like. But as he delves deeper into the supernatural, his life and soul--including those of his family--become greatly at risk of being taken by Belial.

Generally, I don't like reading books that have extremely long chapters (this one averages about 37 pages a chapter), but once I started "Master of Lies" I couldn't put it down, probably because of the graphic first chapter. The beginning half of the book is enthralling, but as the story progresses, it began to get a little absurd, i.e., magically-shrinking women; so I had to give it a 4-star rating instead of a 5. However, I'd still recommend this book to Masterton fans, as well as Dean Koontz fans who are into the supernatural horror genre.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal and ghastly horror.......2002-06-18

Homicide detective Larry Foggia has a real problem on his hands. So does the entire city of San Francisco. A serial killer is on the loose and he kills with such violence and cruelty he is dubbed "The Fog City Satan". In the killer's twisted mind, he is sacrificing people to raise an ancient demon who will give him immortal powers. Unfortunately for Larry Foggia and all of humanity, his plan is working. Beneath the city, a dark God imprisoned for centuries is about to take over the throne of humanity. He is The Master of Lies and the oceans will fill with blood when he rises from his tomb... Graham Masterton is one of the absolute masters of horror fiction. Nobody can touch his imagination and ability to scare readers. Even though I'm a huge horror fan, the first chapter of this book was so saddistic and bloody, I was almost afraid to keep reading. Highly recommended to horror fans who think they can't be shocked or scared anymore.

Book Description

Four novellettes, drawn in the shojo manga style, a stylistic departure from Horror Master Hino. Hino juxtaposes the innocence and beauty of youth with the evil and ugliness that lurks down every dark alley, within every deep forest, and at the bottom of every crazed soul. His talent to frighten and disturb his readers remains unchanged. The stories concern promising young girls on the threshhold of womanhood--but they fall prey to one evil after another. A beautiful girl turns old and haggard overnight; another becomes a victim of a dead, murderous teacher; another is tormented by an obsessive suitor; others discover that their own close friends are not who they thought them to be. This is the first in a two-book set.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars POOR INNOCENT GIRLS.......2006-07-12

When you think shojo manga, you think of girls in high school having to deal with unrequited love or trying to think of how they can confess to their crush. Well, with Ghost School, you can throw all that out the window. Hideshi Hino, while using girls at school as his starting point, sucks these cutesy schoolgirls into his trademark horror stories, which are more interesting than his usual fare due to the unusual subject matter. These girls will have to deal with ghostly teachers, psychotic stalker classmates, suffering from a strange disease that turns them into old women overnight and school princesses that are different from what they seem! This ninth volume of Hino Horror was really successful at inspiring dread and sometimes laughs and sometimes tenderness, according to which story you are reading. Hino does a good job with a subject he doesn't usually work with.

Book Description

This audiobook captures the rich language and dark atmosphere of five of the greatest stories by American horror writers. In "The Oval Portrait," an artist exchanges the life of his young bride for a painted image. In "The Upper Berth," apparent suicides lead to the most uncanny supernatural conclusions. These tales allow modern listeners to experience the magic of classic storytelling.

Just to expose my bias, let me just say that Gerain Wyn Davies could read a cookbook or the instruction manual to a refrigerator and I would buy it just to listen to his voice! This is an audio book filled with classic horror stories vocalized by a man trained in classic theatre. What more can you ask for? The stories come to life and Mr. Wyn Davies manages to make the stories suspenseful and haunting. I have only purchased 2 audio books and they were both Wyn Davies short story collections. If you like classic horror (Poe, etc.) and you love a beautiful voice, this is the audio book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Great insights into the craft of novel writing.......2006-07-11

This is my favorite Christopher Pike book. I think it the most honest and truthful as to what Mr. Pike is really like behind the scenes as a working writer.

Yeah, Pike is much older in real life than the character of Marvin, but this book shows Pike is a kid at heart. If you read between the lines, it reveals that all elusive "mysterious creative process" behind all great works of fiction.

I'm in college now, but, mainly because of this book, Christopher Pike remains one of my favorite authors!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Engaging.......2004-06-16

As a huge fan of Christopher Pike, I loved this book. I read it for the first time years ago, and have since gotten my own copy and love it even more.
Tip - if at first a Pike book seems confusing, then read it again later. I began reading Christopher Pike in late primary school, and then in high school. While I thought they were entertaining, when I read them again now (at 20) I enjoy them so much more, and on so many more levels.

This book is one of Pike's straight horror/criminal type reads - there are no spiritual or esoteric themes that the later books have.
A great book to introduce yourself to Pike, if you haven't already. Once you start reading, it is very hard to stop!!

5 out of 5 stars Masterfully Written.......2003-05-09

This is one of my all time favorite Christopher Pike books. Actually it's one of my all time favorite books period. The story is delightful and the characters are wonderfully real. I've read this book many times over and it never gets boring or old. I definately reccommend this book to anyone wanting a good book to read. Also in both of Pike's Tales of Terrors we hear more of Marvin and his life.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2002-12-30

When i first began reading, it was intresting but once i kept reading i wouldnt let go of it ,it suked me into it, I couldnt help but Wait to see what was guna happen next and you think he did it but then you just cant make up your mind and its alot of twist and turns to whats gona happen next and what did happen was different from what you thought. So it keeps you thinking How? is an awsome novel and is worth buyin because once you finish it, all you want to do is pick the book right back up and start reading it all over again.

5 out of 5 stars "He wrote about his own murder...".......2002-12-11

"Master of Murder" takes place in Sesa, Oregon, where 17-year-old* Marvin Summer attends high school during the day, and in his free time, he writes the extremely popular The Mystery of Silver Lake** series, a story line that uncannily begins to resemble his own present situation.

Although Marvin writes under a pen name (Mack Slate), someone from his hometown knows who he really is and starts sending him unsettling letters to his private p.o. box, concerning Marvin's investigation into the one-year-old "suicide" of Harry Paster, the boyfriend of Shelly Quade, a girl Marvin's had a crush on for years. But who keeps sending him these letters? And what exactly do they want from him?

Like a lot of Pike's books, "Master of Murder" has plenty of surprising plot twists, true-to-life characters who do some pretty crazy things in the name of love, as well as a one-year-old murder that comes back to haunt everyone. This is a very engrossing and fast-paced book, and if you're a diehard Pike fan, you'll more than likely wonder how much of this book is autobiographical, since Christopher Pike (real name: Kevin McFadden) is such a private writer, just like Marvin.

_____
*(The synopsis inaccurately states Marvin is 18 years old; he's really 17.)
**(Another error: Marvin's teen thriller series is called "The Mystery at Silver Spring" in the synopsis; it's really "The Mystery of Silver Lake".)

3 out of 5 stars All in all, a nice book........2000-05-07

We read all these Stephen King books that seem to flock the bestseller lists with their monsters, and gore, and goo, and we ask ourselves: Where is this guy coming from? In this book, we could literally know where he's coming from.

Anyone who has read at least one book by King knows that he's from Maine, for it always says it on the inside of the back cover; but do we know, for instance, that he once spent a vacation on a hotel hidden deep inside the mountains of Colorado which later inspired him to write his classic, The Shining? Do we know anything of how his college was like? This book is not a biography, but tells of the places in which he has lived all his life - which are all mostly scattered throughout Maine.

There is one little flaw that this book has, though, and that is that it gives the ending to some of his novels and short stories. So, if you haven't read every single novel and story King has ever written, you might not want to read this book just yet.

5 out of 5 stars Stephen King Country -- Terror Incognita.......1999-04-10

Stephen King has long been known for his portrayals of small town life gone horribly wrong. Near the start of his career, with 1976's 'Salem's Lot, King worked with the idea of an isolated Maine town infiltrated by evil outsiders. Throughout his long career, he has revisited this basic plot many tames, putting a new spin on each. Derry, Maine became prey to shape-shifting creatures in both It and Insomnia. The Tommyknockers' reclusive Haven turned into ground-zero for radioactive alien ghosts. Desperation, Nevada turned into the ghostly battleground between God and the devil. And poor Castle Rock, Maine was doomed from the start.

King has often been asked "Where do you get your ideas?" All the answer Add an "s" are here, in George Beahm's newest, Stephen King Country. A different sort of book about King, this photo-essay guide takes the reader on a visual journey of the real (and sometimes unreal) world of Stephen King. Beginning with a brief overview of King's career through 1998's Bag of Bones, Beahm shifts gears and delves into the geography of King's real Maine. Interweaving biography and history, Country takes us through the towns of Durham, Orrington, Hermon, and more (perhaps "more" should be "others"), giving the reader some insight as to where King's fictional towns originated. Chapter Two, focusing principally on King's hometown of Bangor (the real-world counterpart of Derry) is a fascinating look at where Stephen King lives and writes, complete with a stunning aerial photograph of King's immense house. Touching on Stephen and his wife Tabitha King's philanthropy, Beahm then drives us down the dark path into King's fictional towns.

In this section, we are finally able to see the "real" Marsten House of 'Salem's Lot (actually the Shiloh Church in Durham, Maine), the train tracks the boys traveled in "The Body," the Standpipe and the Barrens, major landmarks in the novel It, and the hotel in Colorado that inspired The Shining. This inspired blending of fact and fiction is at once surreal and fascinating - it's like looking through the words of a Stephen King novel and finding a dark reality in the foreground of the man's imagination. In the dedication to It, King calls fiction "the truth inside the lie." In Stephen King Country, you can find that truth, the reality inside the story, and journey through the real and unreal worlds of Stephen King's country without ever leaving your house. Enjoy the trip!

    Book Description

    Advance Praise

"What a treasure house is this book! Robots, space aliens, Einstein, black holes, time travel--these themes, and much more, from Stephen King's amazing books are opened up like toy chests. It's tremendous fun, entirely educational, and a great tribute to King."
    --Peter Straub

    "A fun, fun read."
    --F. Paul Wilson

"The Science of Stephen King appeals to both the scientist and the longtimereader of Stephen King in me. Gresh and Weinberg use concepts from King's fiction as launching pads for in-depth explorations of concepts as diverse as ESP, pyrokinesis, time travel, artificial intelligence, quantum chemistry, alternate realities, string theory, and the possibility that we'll be visited by aliens or that we'll face a global pandemic. Much of what Stephen King writes about in his novels is closer to reality than you might think."
--Bev Vincent, Ph.D., author of The Road to the Dark Tower

"A superb overview of King's use of scientific concepts in his stories. And considering all the scary talk lately about pandemic flu, their chapter on The Stand is timely as hell."
--Stephen Spignesi, author of The Complete Stephen King Encyclopedia

"Just as Sagan and Asimov popularized science to the masses by making itentertaining and informative, so too do Gresh and Weinberg.Compulsively readable and thought-provoking."
--George Beahm, author of The Stephen King Companion

3 out of 5 stars More Science, Less King.......2007-09-18

This book is definitely good for us SK collectors, but really wasn't as compelling a read as I had hoped. Even though I'm science-oriented, some of the explanations went right over my head. Also, there's quite a bit of science, far less relation to SK.

    Overall, it's OK.
