My Father's Dragon--a favorite of young readers since the 1940s and a Newbery honor book--captures the nonsensical logic of childhood in an amusingly deadpan fashion. The story begins when Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father as a boy) runs away with an old alley cat to rescue a flying baby dragon being exploited on a faraway island. With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer disarms the fiercest of beasts on Wild Island. The quirky, comical adventure ends with a heroic denouement: the freeing of the dragon. Abundant black-and-white lithographs by Ruth Chrisman Gannett (the author's stepmother) add an evocative, lighthearted mood to an already enchanting story. Author Ruth Stiles Gannett's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first. (Ages 4 to 8)

4 out of 5 stars engaging classic.......2007-07-05

I recently purchased this CD set for a long car ride with my almost four year old. He loves listening to stories and this is no exception. The first of the three stories is our favorite, but all are well read; the narrator does the voices very well, which is most of the fun. These are classic tales, well worth exposing your children to. (The only caveat to the "classicness" is that they also contain material not sensored for modern political correctness. . . a slap, the word "queer", animals that consume humans, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars Great for first time readers.......2007-06-04

Many years ago my wife and I were looking for a good book to give to our son as one of his own to read. The teen-age daughter of a friend recommended My Father's Dragon and it was perfect our son loved it and it is very good for young readers. He often returns to read the book again, 5 years later.

Just this past year we were struggling to get our 7-year old daughter to read anything, she would do anything not to read. I just handed her "My Father's Dragon" and she spent an hour reading it without a peep. She raced through the book in 2 days and it now moves from book to book with confidence and enjoyment.

I recommend this book highly for young readers. It's fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars fantastic adventure.......2007-05-18

Young Elmer Elevator is, like Kipling's sailor, a "man of infinite resource and sagacity." When a stray cat he befriended tells him about a baby dragon being held prisoner on a far-away island, Elmer immediately puts together an eclectic selection of useful objects, stows away on a boat, and sets out to rescue the dragon. Such odds and ends as chewing gum, a brush and comb, hair ribbons, rubber bands and lollipops all turn out to be exactly what's needed to handle difficult situations. The second book in this three-in-one tells of Elmer's equally eventful return home. The third covers a second rescue, this time involving an entire dragon family. The stories are inventive and fun, and the pictures are delightful as well, leaving the reader wishing for more.

I would recommend this book for all ages. Our resident four-year-old has asked that it be read again and again.

Other recent favorites include Just So Stories and Mountains of the Moon.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! .......2007-05-04

My 5 year old and myself enjoyed this book very much! I can't say anything negative. It is a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer and the Dragon -- a CLASSIC.......2007-02-15

I heard 2 of the 3 stories contained in this book read to me when I was
in Grade School [2nd grade]. The chapters are short enough to be used as a night by night READ to a young listener, prior to bed time, but these stories are charming even for adults to appreciate.
The main protagonist of this child's classic is a boy of 11 or 12 years of age by the name of Elmer Elevator. He travels abroad (on the advice of his newly acquired pet cat), and meets a juvenile dragon who is held captive by a jungle full of selfish animals. Elmer rescues Boris (that is the dragon's name), and that is where their adventures together begin. These stories have been in print for over 50 years but still retain their sparkle and charm and are timeless and fun for especially young readers or pre-reading listeners.

Book Description

Bayonne prepared me well for a larger life and a larger world. I knew who I was and where I was from. I was connected by innumerable little cords to people and places that gave me strength and identity. On The Block I was safe, secure, loved. I even had a number, 174, the address of our house, but the number wasn't a badge of anonymity. To the contrary, it marked my place, where I belonged.

As moving as Russell Baker's Growing Up and Calvin Trillin's Messages from My Father, My Fathers' Houses is the story of a town, a time, and a boy who would grow up to become a New York Times correspondent, television and radio personality, and bestselling author.

In this remarkable memoir, Steven V. Roberts tells the story of his grandparents, his parents, and his own life, vividly bringing a period, a place, and a remarkable family into focus. The period was the forties and fifties, when the children of immigrants were striving to become American in a booming postwar world. The place was one block in Bayonne, New Jersey, and the house that Roberts's grandfather, Harry Schanbam, built with his own hands, a warm and reassuring home, just across the Hudson River from "the city," where Roberts grew up surrounded by family and tales of the Old Country.

This personal journey starts in Russia, where the family business of writing and ideas began. A great-uncle became an editor of Pravda and two great-aunts were original members of the Bolshevik party. His other grandfather, Abraham Rogowsky, stole money to become a Zionist pioneer in Palestine and helped to build the second road in Tel Aviv before settling in America. Roberts returns his saga to Depression-era Bayonne, where his parents, living one block apart, penned love letters to each other before marrying in secret. His father, an author and publisher of children's books, and his uncle, a critic and short story writer, instilled in him a love for words and a determination to carry on the family legacy, a legacy he is now passing on to his own children and grandchildren.

Roberts, too, would leave home, for Harvard, where he met Cokie Boggs, the Catholic girl he would marry, and later, for the New York Times, where he would start his career -- across the river and worlds away from where he began. An emotional, compelling story of fathers and sons, My Fathers' Houses encapsulates the American experience of change and continuity, of breaking new ground using the tools and traditions of the past.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing take on the memoir.......2006-06-26

I am not Jewish, I did not grow up in New Jersey, and I was born the year the author graduated from Harvard. How can I explain the reasons I loved this book? Perhaps the reviewer below summed it up best: it IS refreshing to read a memoir that is not fueled by anger, contempt, or confession. This is a very pleasant visit to a time and place that, while not my own, echo a love of family connections and triumphs. I hope there will be a sequel and I applaud Mr. Roberts for taking the time to reflect upon and share his childhood. We need more books that aren't someone else's therapy.

2 out of 5 stars What a waste of paper.......2005-07-09

I cannot imagine wasting nearly a year of ones life to write a silly and superficial book about a very small and plain vanilla family. Like millions of immigrant families, Roberts' family came to the US, set up shop, had kids, worked hard and passed on their genes. For Steve Roberts, his very ordinary and undistinguished career as a writer for The New York Times and other publications was only made significant by his marriage to Cokie Boggs, whose only claim to fame was being the daughter of a big time pol from the south before he died. She then spent a lot of time at ABC as the classic liberal reporter before she got dumped for George Stepyounopulous, Clinton's mouthpiece.
Luckily this book won't take long to read if you want to, but I keep asking myself why I wasted an hour of my life to read it. I guess the high point of the book is that Barney Frank is his good buddy and got him to apply to Harvard. That's about it. Oh, and he was a bag boy for Scotty Reston. Wow. To think some poor tree died for this.

5 out of 5 stars Warm, insightful and honest.......2005-07-07

First: I'm a big fan of Team Roberts. But I was not expecting the depth of emotion and connection this book evoked in me. I'm a bit younger than Steve, grew up on the West Coast in a WonderBread world, but his descriptions of his background and growing up, full of all the anguish of the less-than-perfect teenager, were astonishingly affirming. I have passed the volume on to another, and expect it will continue to make the rounds. I'm hoping for volume two that picks up at the time they were married and carries on, since there are surely many more stories!

5 out of 5 stars TOUCHING and REAL.......2005-06-06

Steve Roberts has written a charming memoir that celebrates his family and an era gone by. Roberts grew up in Jersey City, an area usually reserved for punch-lines of stupid jokes, but Roberts captures all that is to be valued in his hometown. It is refreshing to read a memoir that is not so much motivated by anger and discontent. MY FATHER'S HOUSES is a memoir written to give credit where it is due.

Book Description

In 1960, renowned Nevada writer Robert Laxalt moved himself and his family to a small Basque village in the French Pyrenees. The son of Basque emigrants, Laxalt wanted to learn as much as he could about the ancient and mysterious people from which he was descended and about the country from which his parents came. Thanks to his Basque surname and a wide network of family connections, Laxalt was able to penetrate the traditional reserve of the Basques in a way that outsiders rarely can. In the process, he gained insight into the nature of the Basques and the isolated, beautiful mountain world where they have lived for uncounted centuries. Based on Laxalt's personal journals of this and a later sojourn in 1965, The Land of My Fathers is a moving record of a people and their homeland. Through Laxalt's perceptive eyes, and his wife Joyce's photographs, we observe the Basques' market days and festivals, join their dove hunts and harvests, share their humor and history, their deep sense of nationalism, their abiding pride in their culture and their homes, and discover the profound sources of the Basques' strength and their endurance as a people.

5 out of 5 stars "The language of the eyes".......2001-06-03

Nevada writer Robert Laxalt's "The Land of My Fathers" is a description of life in the French Basque Country in the 1960s. Laxalt -- the son of Basques who immigrated to Nevada about 1910 -- spent 1960-61 and 1965-66 getting to know his parents' ancient homeland. Making use of his family ties, he succeeded in breaching the "impenetrable wall of Basque reserve" (in Rodney Gallop's words) in a way only a few outsiders have been able to do.

The book is not a straightforward narrative and Laxalt writes about much more than his own experiences. A collection of vignettes, histories, and folk-sayings, it is an exploration of the Basque character. We read about everything from "Basque troubadours" to the humanization of German soldiers stationed in the Basque lands during the occupation of the Pyrenees. Trying to capture the essence of this ancient people, Laxalt gives us glimpses of the "poetic truth" of the Basque land and Basque history, the emotional truth gleaned from "the language of the eyes." Of course the approach is not without its drawbacks, but for a book like this, "The Land of My Fathers" is remarkably free of immigrant-son's-come-home romanticism.

In addition to Laxalt's vivid prose poetry, many of his vignettes are interesting as anthropological descriptions of life in the "Pays Basque". Here, we encounter aspects of Basque folklife such as pigeon-hunting, contraband, dancing, the unique brand of "shepherd justice", and the "bohèmes" (literally "Bohemians", they are a poorly-known group of shunned outsiders -- not unlike the Gypsies -- who have lived in the Basque country for years). A couple of these "ethnological vignettes", in fact, appeared in the August 1968 issue of "National Geographic".

Although throughout one is struck by the Basques' indomitable ability to overcome adversity, unfortunately the beautiful culture described by Laxalt is rapidly slipping away -- if it has not, for the most part, slipped away already. The Spanish sector of the Basque lands has long been one of the most heavily industrialized in Europe and the French sector, although still largely rural, has seen the same kinds of cultural changes places all over the world have seen with the onslaught of globalization. Many things have changed for the better, and Laxalt certainly doesn't claim the past was perfect, yet it is difficult not to agree with him that "something of the romantic past has been lost." For all that, his many books are even more important, small safeguards against a rapidly deteriorating humanity.

If there were ten stars, "The Land of My Fathers" deserves them.

Book Description

In this delightful memoir, Jean Renoir, the director of such masterpieces of the cinema as Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game, tells the life story of his father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, the great Impressionist painter. Recounting Pierre-Auguste's extraordinary career, beginning as a painter of fans and porcelain, recording the rules of thumb by which he worked, and capturing his unpretentious and wonderfully engaging talk and personality, Jean Renoir's book is both a wonderful double portrait of father and son and, in the words of the distinguished art historian John Golding, it "remains the best account of Renoir, and, furthermore, among the most beautiful and moving biographies we have."

Includes 12 pages of color plates and 18 pages of black and white images.

4 out of 5 stars Two for the Price of One: More Than an Artist's Bio--A Detailed Historial Portrait of 19th C. France.......2007-09-16

A biography written by a child of someone famous often carries more than one burden, similar to the responsibility or encumbrance of the overshadowing parental fame. However, in filmmaker Jean Renoir's lovingly detailed remembrances of his Impressionist painter father, the reader gleans more than a timeline of an artist's rise to prominence. The author shares a richly detailed account of life in a culture that--in most areas of France save for Paris--was still foremostly agrarian. In this burgeoning Industrial world, Renoir tells of the rise of his father's art and the changing cultural behaviors, shifting societal patterns and troubling questions within that framework.

Beginning at Louis-Philippe's "July Monarchy" (1830-1848)-- generally seen as a period during which the haute bourgeoisie was dominant and the 1840's which saw financial crisises and bad harvests with an ensuing economic depression--we are reminded of the general and specific trends vis-à-vis how they affected the Renoir family's world. Curiously descriptive, this was a world of street oil lamps and chamber pots; anesthesia was not yet invented (nor any antiseptics); butchers slaughtered the animals on site in the back of the shop; great debates about the inferior railroad system and the overall safety of locomotives were waged (could a pregnant woman harm her unborn child by moving a such great speeds? Did the smoke and soot emitted hinder crops in nearby fields from growing). Adding to the vivid and graphic storytelling of French life are vignettes of the senior Renoir's dealings with fellow Impressionists and art dealers as well as his painting process behind some of his masterpieces. Family life, the defining touchstone of the artist as a man, is shared in humorous and matter-of-fact style ("My mother brought a great deal to my father: peace of mind, children whom he could paint; and a good excuse not to have to go out in the evening.") This book, which was first published in the mid-1950's, affords the reader a complete picture of the life of a great artist during a time of vicissitude and excitement in all facets of French society.

5 out of 5 stars An affectionate rememberance!.......2006-04-22

An affectionate remembrance of Renoir by his son, concentrating the years up to the turn of the century.

Renoir considered himself an artisan rather than an artist, disliked anything artificial, from margarine to ready-to-wear clothes, had among his friends artists, and musicians who are household names today. "It is when you have lost your teeth that you can buy the best beefsteak" he would say, and considering that he became more infirm with age, this truism affected him no less than the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Therapy.......2003-12-28

We adopted "Renoir, My Father" as bedside reading while my wife was recovering from hip surgery, and (aside, perhaps, from "Goodnight, Moon,") I can't imagine better therapy. This is odd, in a way: Claude was an old man (and in pain) when Jean got to know him, and Jean was an old man when he finally brought his recollectios together. You might expect cranky, but nothing of the sort: it's a book full of sunny afterglow. Every parent would hope to be rememnbered so well.

The book might take a bit of getting used to: Jean has his own pace and his own way of telling his story. We did it in small doses and I'm not certain yet that I quite catch the rhythm. None of the rough edges have been smoothed off which, come to think of it, is just as Claude would have wanted: Jean speaks with his own voice. You have to listen well, but you know that the voice is nobody else's.

I suppose it helps to know a bit about the Impressionists to enjoy it all, but I can't say I know all that much, and I didn't feel impaired. Anyway, God bless Google: more than once, when Jean talked about a painting or a subject, I key-clicked my way to an image and completed (as it were) the picture.

Kudos also to NYRB (this time) for producing what it does not always produce: a finished physical specimen The paper feels like quality; the binding is sturdy, and there is a small but satisfying selection of pictures, both colored and black-and-white. There is even an index of sorts (I assume from the original translator) but it is patchy and incomplete. That last is a shortcoming, but forgivable in light of the book's other virtues. In the NYRB firmament, this is surely a star.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2002-02-19

Impressionism is my favorite style of painting so I was really enchanted with this biography. Written by Renoir's middle son, Jean, Renoir, My Father not only gives us an intimate look at the life of Auguste Renoir, it gives us an intimate look at the Paris of Renoir's day as well.

As we get to know Renoir we get to know his contemporaries, too. Jean Renoir writes about Monet, Cezanne, Manet, Sisley and many other great artists. We learn many "little known" facts, such as Monet's penchant for lace and his "artful" way with the ladies.

Paris really comes alive in this book. Many of the places Renoir writes about still exist and can be visited today. This book makes any art lover's trip to Paris more meaningful whether he's a Renoir fan or not.

When reading this book, one must remember that this is not a "run of the mill" biography. This is a son writing about the father he adored. The portrait we are given is very intimate, detailed and loving. It's obvious that Jean Renoir adored his father, just as Auguste Renoir adored his family.

Ultimately, this book is a beautiful tribute from a loving son to a father who was one of history's consummate artists. If you have any interest at all in art, this is one book you simply must not pass up. The last page alone will break your heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Vivid Portait.......2000-05-04

Renoir was far more than one of the world's greatest artists. He was an adventurer, a family man, a man who held interesting views on just about every subject under the sun, and finally, in his later years, a martyr to life. Although this book was written by Renoir's middle son, Jean, it is as vibrant and alive as if Renoir, himself, had just written the words in his own hand. Through this book we learn how the Renoir family left its roots in Limoges and moved to Paris. We read of Renoir's early years as a painter of porcelain and how and why he became an artist, more specifically, an Impressionist. We learn of Renoir's marriage to Aline Charigot of Essoyes, the birth of his three sons and his move to the south of France. Some of the most interesting sections of the book deal with Renoir's feelings about the effect of light on a painting and why he needed to paint in a "natural" setting. Also, most interesting are the chapters on the birth of Impressionism and Renoir's relationships with the other artists of the time, such as Monet, Manet, Sisley and Cezanne, just to name a few. Lovingly and charmingly written, this book truly brings Renoir to life and makes him accessible to all. Absolutely a must for anyone with even a passing interest in art or artists!

Author Ruth Stiles Gannett 's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first. (Ages 4 to 8)

3 out of 5 stars Buy a better quality print of this book.......2007-08-22

While the story is definetly worth 5 stars, all the paperback printings of this story render the art absolutely hiddeous. The fine graphite shading of the illustrations is totally lost and the images end up looking like Xeroxes from a newspaper. I grew up reading this story in an anthology of stories published in the 1950's; the art in the anthology is of the highest quality so I know most reprints of this story today are sadly lacking - and it's a shame, too, because I know how much I enjoyed looking at the pictures as a child with my grandfather reading the story to me. These newer printings leave much to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars SUPER .......2007-08-14

I just finished reading this clever, witty and engaging book to my almost-four-year-old son and we both enjoyed it very much!

My daughter - age eight - read it in about thirty minutes and I am considering using it as a resource for copywork in our daily lessons.

This is one of the most entertaining and sweet books we've ever read as a family.

5 out of 5 stars My boys favorite series!.......2007-01-03

Great story about a boy who rescues a baby dragon. My 3 and 5 year old love this series, and anything that doesn't beep, flash, or make a mess that will get a 3 year old to sit down for half an hour at a time has to be great! The storyline is very imaginative, and revolves around being nice to others and using what you have to solve the problems you run into.

5 out of 5 stars AN Amazing Adventure.......2006-12-17

These books are so special because they capture thae minds of all readers, and mean somthing more to younger kids because, Ruth Ganett use her imagineation as is she could go into a mind of an kid 5-9 and speak their thoughts. I am an avid reader, so out of all the books I've read this is one I will cherish forever. Everyone should read it even if a 190 year old person special ordered a super deluxe HUGE print version, they would still enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Kickin' Boy Butt & Lovin' It!!!!!.......2005-07-28

Fran is so super cool! I mean she just totally kicked the baseball boys butts and they knew it. I wish I could be as good at baseball as she is to teach my brothers not to tease me about not being able to hit as far as them. I really liked how no matter how much the boys on the team were mean to her that she was sooooooooo strong, she stood up to them. And how much they needed her on the team. I was like, you go girl when (well, I shouldn't tell you too much). But for sure, I'd totally be her friend if she went to my school.

    2 out of 5 stars Boring Book.......2005-07-26

This book didn't have much substance to it. It was very boring and is hard to relate to. If you're a teenage girl and you want to read something exciting, don't waste your time on this book.

5 out of 5 stars great book for pre-teen girls.......2005-04-09

I loved this book, and so did my 11-year-old daughter. I asked my daughter what she liked about it, and she said, "Fran is so cool, and what happened to her could really happen. I loved it!" My translation: the characters ring true to a kid this age, and Fran is a sympathetic heroine kids will root for.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible and inspirational book.......2007-09-06

This is a type of book that you don't want to stop reading. It was an incredible read and follow up from Beating the Odds (by the same author). The book really makes you think about past, present and future events and experiences in your own life and the roll of spirituality and God in our own lives. The author has made quite a journey and shows how he learned from the good and bad experiences of his life.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Paced, Intriguing story.......2000-02-22

This is one of my favorite books. It is completely absorbing and believable. The book stands out because its a psychological study of this girl and her father. Her father is really hard to figure out and I've read it a few times since and I still think its mysterious. I would highly recommend it if you like mysteries and sort of "on the run" stories.

5 out of 5 stars It was very well written........1999-06-15

This book was so exciting that I never put it down and then I recommended it to all my friends. Even they said that they liked it, and said they would recommend it to their friends. I don't think Hawks should write a sequel, though, because of the way he put it together. It would ruin the mystery.
