No matter how many self-help books we read, workshops we attend, spiritual endeavors we pursue; no matter how often we cuddle our inner child or redesign our outer adult, many people keep returning to a gnawing angst and vague unhappiness, according to T. Byram Karasu, author of The Art of Serenity. One of the problems is that many of us define happiness in paradisiacal, childish terms, causing us to feel like we're missing out. "Happiness in adulthood, however, requires realism, reciprocity, and coming to terms with one's mortality," he writes. And, of course, it requires us to cultivate the art of serenity.

Like M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, Karasu brings a psychological background to the area of spiritual growth. (Karasu is the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as the editor in chief of the American Journal of Psychotherapy.) Sometimes blending spirituality and psychology muddies the waters, but Karasu has a solid understanding of how the two worlds intersect and has created an outstanding and completely accessible guide to lasting inner happiness. The door of joyful serenity can only be opened by a "combination key involving both soul and spirit," he explains. And it all culminates in the love of God. Using real-life cases from his psychotherapy practice, Karasu illustrates how the principles of soul work and spirit work are applied to daily lives. From lovers' jealousy to workplace angst, from friendships to solitude, Karasu offers original, lasting advice and insights. Read this one and put it on your shelf by your other spiritual classics--it's sure to be a lifetime companion. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

We all face adversity, both man-made and natural. How do we survive the loss of a loved one, a betrayal, illness, even impending death, and still find meaning in our lives? Even a "normal" life can seem empty, in spite of material possessions, success, power, and pleasure. In our search for fulfillment and meaning, we work through our past and present conflicts, cuddle our inner child, and redesign our outer adult. We attend workshops on life and secular spirituality and explore the comforts of traditional religion. We get married and divorced, experiment with drugs and alcohol, change jobs. And while our restlessness and unease may abate temporarily, the hollow feeling that there is something missing always returns.

In his profound and accessible work, The Art of Serenity: The Path to a Joyful Life in the Best and Worst of Times, Dr. T. Byram Karasu offers us the key to an extraordinary state of mind -- authentic, soulful happiness -- in the face of everything our life has to offer and take away. The door to this state of mind is opened by a combination of soul and spirit. It involves the soul through the love of others, love of work, and the love of community. It involves the spirit through belief in the sacred and belief in transformation. It culminates in the love of and belief in God. Brilliantly synthesizing psychology and spirituality, Dr. Karasu will guide you to explore the deepest yearnings of your heart.

There is no end to the journey to real happiness; there is no best place to start or best time to begin. So where and when to start? Start here, where you are, and start now.

2 out of 5 stars Wonderful quotes and content, but very fragmented writing.......2007-09-18

I was very much looking forward to reading this book. It even started off very well. There were wonderful quotes from other authors, references to mythological tales, a couple named Joe and Lisa that suffered many problems but were a perfect example of people like us.

Then I began to realize that the book was disjointed. These little tidbits were everywhere, and often popped up out of nowhere, breaking the flow. There would be a heading in a chapter, but Karasu wouldn't elaborate on it. Paragraphs didn't flow. The ideas jumped around. There was no cohesive wholeness. The reason this is so disappointing is because he picked out many wonderful quotes and does seem to have very insightful, important messages for his readers. But they aren't well presented.

Karasu is too absolute at times. For instance, he says that the only way to forgive is to forget. Period. No arguments, not too much discussion. But isn't an individual irresponsible and setting him/herself up for failure by simply forgetting. I don't want to harp on this, because this example isn't my point. My point is that he states his ideas too absolutely.

I am a Christian who is soul searching, and I thought this book would help. It did not. But that doesn't mean it won't help others. If you are looking to read a little at a time, and feel good about some stories and about some tidbits and quotes you pick up each time, this may be perfect for you. But if you want a solid flow, and to dive deep into these topics, you may want to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough in Spirituality Requires a Backward Leap To Faith - Believing And Loving God .......2006-08-20

How do we live life with all its "twists and turns" to find meaning and happiness? T. Byram Karasu in his extraordinary book, "The Art of Serenity", takes us on a journey to find the answer. Karasu, presently Silverman Professor and the University Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Montefiore Medical Center, serves as an excellent guide in finding the answer.

Karasu begins with the premise that we are born with the knowledge of God and are innately spiritual beings, making the cultivation of our spiritual side critical to achieving serenity. "Be a grown-up, soulful, and spiritual person...The first-step is growing up. If you have not, you cannot cultivate your soul and spirit, and will be chronically susceptible to unhappiness."

Breakthroughs in spirituality can only be made possible by a backward leap, returning to faith, that is believing and loving God. This return to faith leads us to the love of self, the love of others, the love of work, and the love of belonging - all critical to finding meaning, fulfillment, and happiness in all aspects of life.

"The Art of Serenity" is told in three parts - "The Way of the Soul" (why love makes a difference); "The Way of the Spirit" (why belief is critical to our transformation); and "The Way of God" (why religion is the natural ground of spirituality). This content-filled book can be digested by everyone, but will be most appreciated by those who have taken the first step, growing up. "Art" will not be a quick read as you will want take your time, absorbing and reflecting on its richness.

We are spiritual beings on a human path on a pilgrimage for meaning, fulfillment and wholeness. Karasu's "The Art of Serenity is a great guidebook, with all the landmarks and detours well marked.

5 out of 5 stars Rare And Precious Wisdom.......2003-02-17

T. Byram Karasu, a respected teacher and author in the field of psychiatry, has ventured far beyond his field in this masterpiece of spiritual wisdom. Clearly he has been doing more than seeing patients all these years, he has been reading assiduously, absorbing the wisdom of the ages. Now, in The Art of Serenity, he distills this wisdom and his own expereinces, for all of us who are willing to taste.

It is not light reading. Karasu deals with the deep questions of life. He begins with love, work, belonging, moves on to the spiritual journey, the nature of self, the acceptance of aging, and the understanding of death. His concluding chapters, dealing with God, and bringing spirituality back home to its ground in religion, are like soaring towers, straining toward the light. The final section left me stunned, wanting to go back and read the book again.

The author uses clinical vignettes, folk-tales, bits of poetry, the Bible, the Quran, and many other works. His writing is fluid and graceful, with a kindly sense of humor. He says little about himself, putting himself into the background, and so his presence is powerfully felt--a man of learning, integrity, wisdom and care for others.

This book, I'm afraid, is not for everyone. It does not promote (or denounce) any single religion. It is not for the narrow-minded. And, I think, it is not for the young. It is a book for those who have some maturity and life experience. For those who are ready it will be a life-changing masterpiece. Thank you, Dr. Karasu. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber

5 out of 5 stars Well-titled!.......2003-02-09

"The Art of Serenity" is RIGHT! This book is incredible in that it really brings you directly into the glaring face of serenity--and then serenity doesn't break eye contact!! People always say: "Do not judge a book by its cover" but I'm going to have to plead the opposite in this case. The cover of this book gives you a perfect idea of the calm nothingness that awaits inside.

Take serene and multiply it times 25! THAT'S HOW SERENE YOU WILL FEEL AS YOU READ THROUGH PAGE AFTER PAGE OF "The Art of Serenity." It is the literary equivalent of a handful of sleeping pills, and I mean that in the most positive, relaxing way. In closing, I would like to assert (serenely) that if I hadn't read this 5-star book, I would never have been able to pin down what "happiness" is. I wouldn't have known that BEFORE I can love someone I have to love MYSELF...

The price of this book is absolutely ridiculous for what you get:

total self-comprehension.

5 out of 5 stars Nurturing, reassuring, and hopeful.......2003-02-08

This book doesn't leave a stone unturned in finding all paths from all backgrounds and all schools of thought in our eternal search for inner peace and happiness. Great book. Also recommended, The Little Guide To Happiness. Another book that brings us closer to the prize.

The fact that Ms. Gibson worked for Rose Kennedy and had the audacity to take Mrs. Kennedy's diaries that Mrs. Kennedy asked Ms. Gibson to destroy and use it to write a book shows the bad character that Barbara Gibson has. Shame on her! I would not believe anything she writes in this slanderous book.

      Book Description

We've all been there, whether searching the personals for a romantic connection or posting an ad in hopes of luring in a new friend. A great source of entertainment, many people skim through the personals section for a quick laugh, never questioning its origin or its interesting history. Personal ads began popping up sporadically in the eighteenth century and became common by the end of the nineteenth. Whole publications devoted to romantic and marriage-minded classifieds flourished around the turn of the last century. In the last half of the twentieth century, personal ads exploded in myriad publications from coy gay ads of the 1950s to colorful ads in the alternative presses of the 1970s. Today, more and more people are paying for a chance at love. From the best and the worst, the hopeful and the hopeless, the bitter and the sweet, the romantic and the lustful—never before has a collection like this been assembled from so many decades past. By including hundreds of funny and surprising personal ads from historical newspapers as well as modern Web sites, Man with Farm will entertain and inform.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting collection taps rich source of social history .......2006-08-25

Online dating sites and [...] advertisements and TV shows like Blind Date or The Love Connection are really nothing new. Personal ads have been with us for nearly 300 years. In Man with Farm Seeks Woman with Tractor Laura Schaefer collects almost 200 examples of the genre, most dating to the 19th and early 20th centuries, and most having appeared originally in English and US publications. Schaefer divides the ads among eleven chapters by type--the self-deprecating or desperate, the poetic, the downright bizarre, and so on.

As with any collection of this sort, the majority of the texts selected for inclusion will probably fail to interest any given reader, and readers will differ in which of the ads included most appeal to them. But among the ho-hum here that didn't spark my interest are some true gems. For example: a 19-year-old GI writing in 1946 to ask for pen pals; the parents of a sickly 21-year-old looking to attach their daughter to some benevolent doctor; a 70-year-old, castle-owning German baron in the market for a very particular sort of 16- to 20-year-old girl; notice that a lisping, one-legged wife has run away with the parish priest; a man with a glass eye looking for a woman "who also has a glass eye or some other deformity not more severe." My own favorites in Schaefer's collection are those ads that offer a snapshot of real life, recording some small unremarkable moment long lost to memory. What can have transpired between these two on a London street, for example, to prompt such interest?

"A LADY WHO passed a Gentleman on Monday, the 17th of this month in Hart-street, Bloomsbury, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, without speaking to him, is anxious for an opportunity of seeing him again, any time after the 7th of January."
      -- December 25, 1810,
      The Times (London)

More than a century later, more than an ocean away, another chance encounter was memorable to at least one of the parties concerned:

"LADY WHOSE CAR ticket was refused by conductor on S. Meridian car, Friday, June 20 at 7 a.m. wishes to communicate with gentleman who witnessed the refusal. DRexel 5056."
      --June 26, 1924,
      Indianapolis Star

In some cases one wants desperately to know how the advertisers fared in their quests.

The personals are surely a rich source of social history. Certainly they reflect their times, young widows and widowers apparently being thick on the ground in the 19th century, and the contracting of relationships hinging very often on the quantifiable resources one could muster--whether a yearly stipend or a tractor. It is also interesting to note that the dangers inherent in forming relationships by mail, electronic or traditional, are not new, and neither is the discussion over the desirability of doing so.

Schaefer's book is a quick read, and many of her selections are excellent. There are times when I would have liked her to provide additional context for her selections. Murders committed by men placing personal ads are alluded to on two occasions, for example, and one would like very much to know more about these cases. It would also be interesting--though I realize this isn't the book Schaefer set out to write--if the author had researched what is known of the subsequent history of at least some of the advertisers featured: that elderly, castle-wielding baron must have left his mark in the record books, for example. But Man with Farm Seeks Woman with Tractor is recommended as a quick and interesting read and as a window into what seems to be a rich vein of historical information.

1 out of 5 stars Not sure why this book gets so many stars.......2006-06-09

I read an article reviewing this book and was so excited to check it out. When I looked through the book I was dissapointed at how "light" it was in content. Deciding to give it a try I read the first 20 pages at least and found the book extremely boring - so boring in fact that I've given up. The "personal ads" are not very funny or entertaining, just basic and dry. I honestly don't even want to give it to someone else and will probably end up throwing it away. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Book to give and have.......2005-09-23

I ordered this book on a whim and have since given to 5 people for Birthday, Valentine Days, Appreciation gifts etc. Its one of those fun books to have around and flip through. Visitors to my home always end up paging through it and readig out loud. It's also a stress free way of learning some history. What better way to catch on to the social and romantic mores of the time than reading a personal add written by vast array of people!? I recomend this book if your looking for a fun gift, or conversation starter.

5 out of 5 stars The Best and Worst.......2005-07-11

I loved this book! It might be better titled "The Best and Worst OF Personal Ads of All Time," as it aptly demonstrates the best and worst OF people, well, through time. People represent themselves and their desires in a particular way in personal ads. They always reflect something true, whether it be the truth of what they are looking for, the norms of the time, or what they think their potential mates want to see. This collection captures that, and what's more- its funny! Some things about us change, and others stay the same through the years. Check out my favorite, "The Result of a 'Personal'."

5 out of 5 stars Great Road Trip Book!.......2005-06-27

I took this book on a road trip with 2 friends. It was hilarious! We had so much good conversation come from it. And we learned a lot about ourselves, each other, and our dating styles. It's very interesting to see how personal ads have developed and how the media has evolved. It's also fun to see how what people are looking for has changed terminology, but shares a basic underlying idea - everyone is looking for ultimate happiness with "the One." Very enjoyable book. Great for a coffee table book, gift, road trip, and interesting conversations!

It's time to rediscover the wonderful books we all cherish.

First published in 1859, A Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens's most famous and popular novels. This stirring tale, set in the late eighteenth century against the backdrop of the French Revolution, is a novel for all generations. Filled with adventure and love, revolution and terror, it transports the reader to a time of political upheaval and solutions by guillotine.

5 out of 5 stars The most unforgettable opening and closing sentences ever found in a book!.......2007-07-14

I will never, the rest of my life forget these two sentences. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness...." and at closing "It is a far, far, better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known."

Wow, this is not your usual Dickens. No quirky characters with strange names and laugh out loud moments, just a darn good story -- the story of two cities, London and Paris. It is difficult to put the plot into words, but when the book begins you are in London at the time of the American revolution and spies (or suspected spies) abound, and the story eventually switches to France prior to and during the French revolution.

Dickens does a marvelous job (as always) of building his story one step at a time and slowly peeling back the layers one at a time. This is not a put down and pick it up a week later kind of a book, it is very intense and complicated and you have to pay close attention. I was just floored at how he sucked me in with his descriptions of the mobs, terror and the madness of the revolution leading you to a nail biting finish. I admit to holding my breath during those last few pages!

Highly recommended, and well worth the time to discover (or rediscover) an old classic.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Review.......2007-05-17

I think this book was great! In the beginning of this book some of the words are French or English, which makes them a little hard to read, but once you get past that it turns into an amazing book. This book is about a daughter who saves her father from insanity and brings him home to England. Years after that day the daughter is married and her husband is asked to come to France (the French Revolution is taking place), but once he gets there he is put on death trial because of his fathers' crimes. In the end of the book the husband is saved and they all go back to England.

5 out of 5 stars A Story Like No Other.......2007-04-02

A Tale of Two cities is a vivid story of the French Revolution filled with imagery and motifs that are thick in the literature. So many stories collide in as the numerous characters are all connected some way, some how. There's a dramatic love triangle, a revenge story, a recovery from an eighteen year imprisonment and much more.

Charles Dickens writes as someone from his day would, filled with commas and metaphors. For children under thirteen this might be inappropriate, not because of content, but because they might not understand it enough to appreciate all it has to offer. It shows the immoral side of humanity, even though revenge isn't the only purpose. The aristocrats were mercilessly taken from there homes and to La Guillotine.

Motifs such as The Sea, Redemption, Secret Sins, Letters, and many others reinforce what is trying to be demonstrated. They are occurring events or ideas that keep the book interesting. So many of these characters come to their doom and it the affects the reader just as it would if you were actually watching it. Dramatic foreshadowing is also very affecting, but the actual events are even more thrilling.

Overall, I recommend this book to all willing to read, it's a wonderful book to enhance your literary vocabulary. It has tastes for men with its brutal wars and battles, but also has a sense of feminism as the love story will interests the women.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Story of Love and Redemption!.......2007-02-19

This is easily my second favorite classic novel. Saturated with adventure, love, passion, and redemption, Dickens expertly and eloquently details the lives of many characters all woven together by the golden threads of love during the tumultuous and dangerous French Revolution. A must read!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing tale.......2007-01-07

To begin, this is the first Dickens novel I have ever read. As a student of history and political science, most of my reading projects involve works of nonfiction. I must admit that I am not well versed in classic literature--a fact that I am ashamed of whenever I watch jeopardy or converse with literature fans. This past year I made a concerted effort to acquaint myself with some of the classic masterpieces. As a social studies major, "A Tale of Two Cities" was an excellent choice to begin my foray into classic literature.
Charles Dickens is a master storyteller. How someone can contrive such an intricate and compelling tale is beyond my comprehension. Dickens's imaginative skills should be respected and envied by all writers. "A Tale of Two Cities" takes place during the French Revolution. It is a story about love, revenge, and sacrifice. Dickens portrays the madness and brutality of the French Revolution in vivid and skillful fashion.

This is a must read for anyone interested in literature and/or history. I can see how Dickens is not for everyone, however. The reader must have a good vocabulary to fully understand his writing. Knowledge of 18th century European history is an added advantage and will help the reader to better comprehend the situation and setting. If those prerequisites are met, the reader is sure to be moved by this masterpiece.

      Book Description

The 50 Best (and Worst) Business Deals of All Time analyzes how and why these deals became bargains or busts (or both). From the purchase of Manhattan in 1624, to the merger of AOL and Time Warner in 2000, author Michael Craig presents examples illustrating how the outcome of mega-deals can depend on clear thinking and the adherence to simple guidelines.

Here's just a sample of what you'll learn:
      - The U.S. government tried to buy the city of New Orleans from France and ended up with the entire 800,000-square-mile Louisiana Territory.
      - Ray Kroc entered into a ruinous franchise agreement to give birth to McDonald's and how a brilliant real-estate deal saved the business.
      - Warren Buffett bet $1 billion on the strength of Coke's brand name and made $10 billion.
      - Michael Robertson paid $1,000 for the Internet domain name MP3.com and turned it into a nine-figure fortune.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly strong book........2005-01-26

I didn't expect too much from this one (which begs the question of why I was reading it) but I was pleasantly surprised. The book goes through 50 prominent business deals and evaluates how they turned out and why they turned out that way.

The book breaks down into ten rules to follow and uses about five deals to illustrate each rule. The rules themselves are reasonably well written, but more than anything else, you just learn about how to improve your deal-making abilities by just reading about one deal after another in such close succession. Eventually, you get a foundation of deal-making knowledge through osmosis.

I would recommend this book as a tool for anyone who wants more of a foundation of knowledge to improve their deal-making skills.

Michael Craig, a securities attorney, describes the basis for success or failure in 50 big money business deals. He examines the strategy, risks and personality dynamics involved. Craig highlights 10 rules for success he gleaned by observing patterns in these deals, rules you can apply to your own business transactions. This well-crafted book groups several deals to illustrate each rule, although many of the deals reflect several principles. At the end of each story, the author recaps the lesson at hand and explains what went right or wrong. While executives, company owners, and those who do deals for them will find this book especially valuable, we at getAbstract also recommend it to general readers, who will enjoy reading these inside accounts of well-publicized deals.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Craig at his best.......2000-12-07

After having read many business and political articles by Michael Craig, I'm glad to see his talent has finally been noticed by publishing houses. This book is not only entertaining but a must read for anyone in business or anyone considering starting a business. Oh, to have this book 100 years ago!!!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book -- readable, smart, even fun.......2000-11-22

This is when business is at its most exciting -- when the façade of carefully laid plans and beautifully executed plays fades into a reality of last-minute decisions, Hail Mary passes and ego-driven competitiveness. This book looks at 50 such moments, dividing them into ten categories, such as "Do Your Homework" (The disastrous formation of Cendant from the merger of HFS and CUC Int'l) and "Take Advantage of Your Adversary's Weakness" (John Kluge buys and breaks up Metromedia). From small but critical decisions (Michael Robertson purchases the domain name MP3.com) to gigantic transactions (Quaker Oats acquires Snapple), from those that worked out beautifully (Berkshire Hathaway purchases Coca-Cola stock) to those that failed miserably (Novell acquires WordPerfect), deals are dissected. What emerges is a compelling case that dealmaking, at least as much as running a company or creating products, is what separates good companies from bad.

Mike Craig is one of my very favorite business writers. As he's demonstrated time and again on the website that I edit, he's in possession of one of the rarest traits in business writing: hands-on knowledge of how deals are put together. Having defended, sued, represented and antagonized dozens of public companies over his decade and a half as a corporate attorney, Craig knows how these deals are put together. Better, he knows how to explain them with flair.

This book is at its best when Craig is taking a company to task for a bad decision. Sony's ruinous acquisition of Columbia Pictures is gleefully detailed, from the initial overpayment to the hiring of Peter Guber and Jon Peters at inflated rates to the way Sony laid down when Warner sued them for hiring that duo. You can almost hear Craig giggling as he chronicles the missteps.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best business books you can find.......2000-10-27

Who would have thought the world of big business deals could be so lively? Sure, there have been a few books focused on particular big deals - like the RJR Nabisco deal - but very little in the way of interesting writing on other business deals. I was sold on the quality of the book from a story in the Introduction, where the author explains how, as a young attorney, he witnessed a hostile takeover - emphasize hostile - settled when the parties were locked in a room with spoiled lunch meats.

I think the book will appeal both to business junkies with a high degree of expertise - maybe they'll find themselves lauded or skewered - and relative newcomers to the genre. Craig seems to be able to take some complex, far-ranging deals and boil them down to the essentials (why the deal was done, who the personalities were, what the terms where, who the winners and losers were, what the great/bad decisions were), while still keeping a "flavor" to the explanation.

Some of the most interesting chapters are about deals you usually do NOT think about as big business deals. He has a chapter on Priscilla Presley and the founding of Graceland. He explains how Microsoft owes virtually all its success to a really slick deal in 1981. He describes the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920 as a business deal. Same with the Louisiana Purchase. And he doesn't just describe these deals, he tells you about the people involved, their motivations, and the results.

Because it's got the 50 deals (and another "nifty 50"), it's light reading. It would make a great holiday gift for anyone interested in business.

          Book Description

This volume is one of a series of five prepared by various authors, designed to be useful and instructive regarding the long history of the United States Army Chaplaincy. The emphasis throughout is on how chaplains did their ministry in the contexts of both war and peace. The series seeks to present as full and as balanced an account as limitations of space and research time permit. The bibliography in each volume offers opportunities for further research.

This volume covers the period from 1920 to 1945.
