5 out of 5 stars Both THUMBS UP for this Book! Long Live Jeanette & Nelson!.......2003-03-11

I've read both new biographys of Jeanette MacDonald and I would really recommend this one. The one written by Mr. Turk is a sugar-coated silly tribute to Gene Raymond. Jeanette and Nelson were obvioulsy very much in love. This seems evident by just how they looked at one another. Both of them seem somewhat lost today. It's really a shame that society has sunk so low. We can only hope that their kind will come back sometime soon! This book is such a good read and very entertaining while still being very honest and candid. I too have first hand knowledge by way of another Hollywood Luminary, none other than Ann Sothern who was a frequent co-star with Gene Raymond in the 1930's and a fellow player at MGM in the early 1940's. Ms. Sothern shared some very interesting facts regarding the MacDonald/Eddy relationship. It is such a shame that they were not able to live a life together. Many years from now, the written words and gossip will all be forgotten, but the films they made for us will live forever. Thanks Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald from the bottom of my heart for sharing your wonderful talents with us, We all hope you are singing together forever more!

5 out of 5 stars Truth Will Out.......2002-08-30

At last, something other than those family "authorized" bios defending the status quo. Nelson & Jeanette had a 35 year love affair, well documented in this book. Despite their gorgeous voices, looks and talent, there was no happy ending for these sweethearts. Let's hope this book will dispell some of the myths about happy marriages, that were dismal failures and circumstances that conspired to keep these lovers apart. With this book, those who still deny their love will have to face reality.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up--Awesome Book! Where's the Movie Version?.......2002-03-10

I read both the 1994 edition and the new 2001 updated paperback edition of "Sweethearts." Both are excellent, well-written, well-researched and tear-jerkers! I like the new chapter that tells how Miss Rich met and became friends with Jeanette's sister Blossom, who got her started on this story. Also in the new version I counted 56 pages of meticulous source notes, including reproductions of letters (from previously annonymous sources who have since died)for those who have to see it to believe it, Gene Raymond's arrest log, FBI files, etc. Famous people who are still alive and knew about the Jeanette-Nelson romance are quoted by name. No documentation? Get real! Arguing that Mayer was called "Louie B." in the book is a minus point? He WAS called either that or L.B. to his name--and a lot worse names behind his back! Nelson Eddy called him "Louie B." in interviews, so what is the problem here? Also, so what if some of the author's sources who are still living haven't decided to turn over private letters to a library. It has no bearing on the validity of those letters. Miss Rich played a lengthy videotape in Los Angeles last year at a Mac/Eddy luncheon of the owner of some of the letters. The elderly woman held the original letters up to the camera and read lengthy selections out loud, even some of the more graphic ones. Word for word, they were exactly as quoted in the book. Bottom line: Nelson Eddy bedded Jeanette MacDonald, as often as he could, it seems. So get over it! All I want to know is, Miss Rich, where's the movie version? We're waiting impatiently! I'm certain even the younger generation can learn from this tragic story of two people who discovered too late how much they loved each other. But until the movie is made, I highly recommend the book for any fan of old Hollywood or anyone who wants to read a true-life "Romeo and Juliet."

1 out of 5 stars Two thumbs down.......2002-03-07

I've written several books on classic movie actors and actresses from the silent era to the present, and found this title at a used book store while in the U.S. After reading it, I must say it made quite a romantic story, but couldn't help being disappointed in the author's amateurish abilities as a writer. [Louis B. Mayer's first name is NOT spelled "Louie", for instance...] To begin with, I found the "Sources" at the back of the book very questionable. Sources given as "Newspaper clipping" (without dates) and also the old standby "Anonymous source" don't quite measure up to the standards of a true film historian. If you can't name and date your source, don't write it! Lastly, many of the sources can't be found in public libraries for researchers to access, they are letters housed in the "author's collection." As a historian, I could only recommend this book to Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy fans as a collector's item. Even if the author's claims ARE true, this book is very poorly written and documented, and would not be a definitive source of information for anyone wanting to know more about Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Most, if not all, film historians like myself would dismiss this kind of writing as something suitable for tabloid newspapers. From what I understand, most already have.

5 out of 5 stars Tragic Love Affair Validated.......2001-09-02

Have just finished a second reading of Sharon Rich's beautifully done biography. It verifies what all the Nelson and Jeanette fans have felt, despite an organized effort on the part of Gene Raymond's supporters to demonize Nelson, and destroy his reputation. Unfortunately, they have succeeded---until now, although, they are still writing their poison pen letters in an attempt to deny the truth. Ms. Rich has set forth of wealth of documentation for anyone who cares to explore the tragic story of their attempt to fulfill their love. All the forces united against them--Louis B. Mayer, some of Jeanette's fan clubs, Gene Raymond( who had many years to push his own agenda) have prevailed with their propaganda, but, hopefully, this book will mark a change. Thank you Sharon Rich.Christine

Book Description

Actors on Guard is the most comprehensive and detailed book on the art of theatrical swordplay available today. It provides the reader with the historical, theoretical and practical basis for learning, practicing and presenting theatrical sword fights. Focusing specifically on the Elizabethan rapier and dagger (the most popular weapons used in stage fights), Actors on Guard provides actors, directors, teachers, stage managers and technicians the skills and knowledge essential to presenting safe and effective fights, both for stage and screen.

Actors on Guard takes the reader through the complex process of selecting safe stage weapons, learning the basic handling and maintenance of the rapier and dagger, as well as how to safely move and interact in the potentially dangerous process of theatrical swordplay. This unique book provides the reader with hundreds of practical exercises in the care and handling of stage weapons, and is fully illustrated with over 250 detailed line-drawings and historical plates. Included are sections on footwork, guards, parries, cutting and thrusting techniques, blade taking actions, disarms, kills and wounds with the sword, and all are described in great detail with every safetly precaution spelled out to avoid any accident or injury. Actors on Guard also takes its techniques out of the classroom and onto the stage by providing information on melding the acting process with mechanics of a stage fight and procedures for safely rehearsing and running a fight within a production.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear and concise.......2005-12-08

I write this review from the standpoint of an actor and a director. I'm not a member of any sort of guild or organization of fight choreographers. However, I've had swords in my hand since I was 12 in various productions. That being said I was hired to direct The Three Musketeers without a fight choreographer. Sure, I had experience, and was very handy with a sword, but I didn't know how to teach it.

Luckily, I had this book.

The book contains a break down of each on guard stance, each parry, and each thrust including the proper names and the basic history of each. It also included extensive sections on footwork, and other moves.

What intrigued me was the history behind the fighting. For example, Girard describes the preference of Englishmen to using the blade rather than the point. This enabled me to fashion fights that would be able to delineate the English characters from the French characters. I was able to choreograph several fights-and no one got hurt.

I'm sure my comments might anger those in professional organizations who might insist that I should have used a trained fight choreographer, and I would agree, had I been able to find one who would have done it for free, but since that wasn't an option. I found this book to be tremendously helpful, and I think you would as well.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Excellent!.......1999-09-22

There is little I can add to the very thorough Atlanta review which follows this posting, except to say the following: the performing community has needed a book like this for a long time, and Dale Girard delivers in spades. Having had the privilege of working with Mr. Girard numerous times over the years, I can attest both to the depth of his scholarship on the subject of the sword, and to his being one of the finest teachers of staged combat extant. Combining years of the author's experience on stage, on film, and in the classroom, "Actors On Guard" is a marvelous guide to beginning rapier-play. With detailed text and copious illustrations, the book pulls off the marvelous trick of being simultaneously easily accessible and deeply comprehensive, making it an invaluable work for performers who have never touched a sword before as well as those with years of training under their belts. While no written work can ever substitute for instruction from a qualified teacher, "Actors On Guard" comes pretty darned close!

5 out of 5 stars A SOLID GUIDE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF ELIZABETHAN SWORDPLAY.......1998-10-26

"Actors On Guard" represents many years of personal research and professional experience by one of the true scholars of the art of Stage Combat, SAFD Fight Master Dale Anthony Girard. In his prologue, Mr. Girard describes stage combat as a "living, maturing art". [p.xvi] Girard's work represents another leap forward in the maturing process. The 467 pages of text that follow include a thorough handling of the safety, training, acting, and performance of the single rapier, and rapier and dagger fights for the stage and screen. These are followed by equally valuable appendices providing detailed listings of the various fight Societies, Swordcutlers and Suppliers, information on weapons maintenance and an exhaustive glossary of common swordplay terms. In limiting itself to the concerns of just these weapons, rapier and dagger, Girard has, happily, accomplished a work far too detailed to be completely illuminated in such a short format. Mr. Girard's text begins in chapter one with the maxim that unites all Fight Directors and Actor Combatants of quality . . . "Safety First!", and this theme is echoed on every page thereafter. New students of the craft often find the task of teaching their bodies the mechanics of the art an exercise in frustration when what they really want to do is fight NOW. Girard recognizes this tendency and offers a detailed argument of just why the learning of these techniques cannot be rushed. "By rushing the learning process, you miss the inherent safety of the technique through an incomplete understanding of the process". [p.5] Girard explains that the basic principles of kinesthetic learning, total body-mind learning, provide the foundation this learning process. Mr. Girard is an outstanding scholar of the sword in history and offers a concise and useful history of the rapier before detailing the anatomy of the weapon itself. These explanations are accompanied with fine illustrations of various fencing and historical weapons, a valuable reference. The information is summed up with a thorough checklist to assist the reader in selecting a safe stage weapon. The meat of Girard's text, chapters 3 through 18, is concerned with the actual learning and performing of safe stage techniques for the rapier and dagger. While there have been many texts written concerning the general techniques of safe stage combat, I know of none that concern themselves with such excellent detail of practical technique and their historical background. Beginning with an explanation of just what is "proper alignment" and how to achieve it, Girard utilizes precise descriptions assisted by appropriate illustrations (excellently drawn by Zina Lee) to explain the basics of stance and footwork. I especially like the explanations of stationary offensive and defensive positions [chapter 3], an afterthought in much of the training I've received to this point, before moving on to actual footwork. Girard moves on to the basics of advances and retreats (broken down into 5 stages and accompanied with illustrations), passes, lunges, "circle steps", and each is presented in an easily understood format. Perhaps most valuable are Girard's drills and exercise detailed at the end of the chapter which are intended to develop individual consistency of stance and movement, and the maintenance of consistent measure between partners. These exercises, notated in easily understood terms, will undoubtedly aid in ending a new combatants footwork mistakes BEFORE they become ingrained as personal habits. The individual blade-work drills Girard offers should be a daily routine for any aspiring combatant. These drills do not require a partner and make for fun reading when you put a sword in your other hand. More importantly, these exercises develop precision and blade awareness and the ". . . strength, agility, and dexterity of the hand and wrist. . . "[p.73]. These individual footwork and blade-work exercises are a gold mine for those who wonder how they can train without a partner. The chapters concerning blade-work cover an amazing breadth of basic techniques. From a detailed description and application of Guards, to the complexities of kills and attacks on the blade Mr. Girard has managed to detail their execution and practice with clarity and precision. Chapter 6 is worth the price of admission for anyone teaching or studying the parries for its clear explanations and thorough illustrations. Every chapter concerning technique is accompanied by drills to develop the technique in practice and a review of their basic principles and safety measures. It is perhaps a testament to the thoroughness of Mr. Girard's text that partners do not cross swords until Chapter 8, where detailed discussions of measure, timing, "Action-Reaction, Action", eye contact, and safety are accompanied by four fine partnering exercises. Aside from the invaluable and painstakingly researched techniques described in this text, I must state that the chapter 20, "Acting the Fight", is the most essential text on the subject of stage combat acting I have come across. Girard explains this necessity of this subject by stating that "The artist needs to develop an acting process for combat that, after the physical skills have waxed, still provides a system of dissecting a physical encounter and making it and integral part of the acting process, the characters and the production."[p.433] Specific techniques for developing character choices within the action of physical conflict are presented to the reader in the format of the "Five Ws (who, what, when, where, why) and the objective choices the actor must make in regard to the text, but often fail to do so when it comes to a choreographed fight sequence. The section titled "The Sounds of Violence" is certain to become required reading in all my future classes no matter what weapon is being taught. Girard advocates the "Vocal Orchestration" of a staged conflict in order to "reinforce the movement of a fight"[p.446] and breaks this process down into an easily understood format. Vocal heath, a discussion of "voluntary sounds" and "involuntary sounds" (such as reactions to injury), round out a section that is certain to become a much referred to text. Dale Girard's text, "Actors On Guard" is a culmination of many years of study, exhaustive historical research (evidences throughout the text by informative explanations of techniques and accompanying plates), and practical experience gained by years of teaching and performing stage combat as a professional. What the reader gains by obtaining and using this text is a great wealth of information and proven training techniques offered by a master instructor. I recommend this book highly, and am personally a better teacher and performer for having read it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read.......2005-09-04

Alice Faye deserved the best and with this biography she got it. The author has captured her reserve, talent, wit and determination beautifully. The fact that Alice's daughters and friends participated so willingly is testament to both herself and the tact and skill with which the author has put the story together.

All of her films are described in detail with a real feel for the pressures with which Faye dealt as she emerged as a superstar and from which she eventually walked away. Her relationship with husband Phil Harris is also analysed and it is a case book study in how 2 people make a life together - commitment, independence, humour etc. Faye's unexpected and extraordinary re-emergence into the limelight in her seventies as a spokeswoman for Phizer Pharmeceuticals is also included. As the author states, her elderly years were truly golden as she worked in a meaningful job and enjoyed her family and grandchildren.

Most impressively, the author has captured the milieu in which Alice Faye developed and this makes for a fascinating insight into New York during the depression.

4 out of 5 stars Only complete biography.......2003-07-26

This is the only complete biography of Alice Faye written since her death in 1998. To those who admire Alice Faye it is a very well researched and interesting book covering her entire life. But the pictures in the book do not do her full justice. The best book there is The Alice Faye movie book,

5 out of 5 stars An All-Round Interesting Book.......2003-03-12

Good things do happen to good people! In Ms. Elder's comprehensive biography of Alice Faye's we experience a young girl who emerges from a broken and impoverished home unscarred and loving. Her dreams of becoming a dancer place her in an atmosphere of traveling bands and their leaders, one night stands, and the New York night club scene, and in this atmosphere where so many others lost their ideals, she enjoys the friendship and respect of all her co-workers, male and female, as well as success.. She enters the Hollywood movie arena of the 40's and 50's, where Mr. Zanuck and moguls of the movie studios try to dictate movie roles to her, yet she holds fast to what she inherently knows is correct and triumphs. And when she knows the time is right for her to quit show business and begin a private life, she does so and has many happy years with her family in a good marriage.

Ms. Elder's excellent writing maintains a balance between the career of Ms. Faye and the social and business environment in which she found herself. Indeed, this book gives splendid insight into the world of show business, from the early night club scene in New York to the developing Hollywood movie business with its contract players, radio broadcasts, and the early days of television. Of particular interest is the role of the newspaper reporters and the film magazines, as well as the role of the movie studios' publicity departments.

This is an all-round interesting book, well researched and documented. I felt I really knew Alice by the end of the book, and admired her strength and values.

5 out of 5 stars More Than Just A Biography.......2003-02-19

Alice Faye was an ordinary woman who led an extraordinary life. In this well researched, lucidly written biography, Jane Lenz Elder explores the many contradictions of Alice Faye: her struggles with stage fright and poor self image despite her enormous stage presence and success, her commitment to marriage and family despite a busy professional life, and her courageous willingness to act in her own best interests in a day when performers were expected to conform to the rigid codes of the Hollywood contract system.

But this book is more than just another biography of a silver screen legend. Ms Elder's background as a historian is evident in the detailed background provided. The reader will learn about the difficulties of life in Hell's Kitchen in the early years of the 20th century, how Prohibition created the night club milieu in which Faye developed her skills, and how business was conducted during the heyday of the great Hollywood studio chiefs.

The result is a rich story about a simple woman during one of the most interesting times in Hollywood history.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2002-12-21

Frankly, I was disappointed in this book about the late Alice Faye. I was so thrilled to finally see a biography on her and it really let me down. Check it out of the library but don't buy it!

          Book Description

When it was first published in 1993, Secrets of Screen Acting broke new ground in explaining how acting for the camera is different from acting on stage. Reaction time is altered, physical timing and placement are reconceived, and the proportions of the film frame itself become the measure of all things. In this updated edition, Patrick Tucker explains how digital video introduces yet another secret (and solution): the proportions of the digital frame are different from that of traditional film stock, so that the director must conceptualize each image in terms of this new rectangle. Actors now fit into the frame in a slightly different way. Based on a revolutionary non-Method approach to acting, Secrets of Screen Acting shows what actually works: how an actor, an announcer--anyone working in front of the cameras--gives excellent performances on screen.

In this new edition, Patrick Tucker retains the engaging style and useful structure of the first edition while addressing significant changes in current technology, ensuring that this volume will remain an indispensable resource for contemporary students of screen acting.
Updated for a new decade of screen performance possibilities, Secrets of Screen Acting is a magician's box of acting tricks for today's performer. thought, there still exists no single method for screen work. In this book, Patrick Tucker makes the distinction between acting for the stage and for the screen. He explains that the actor, instead of starting with what is real and trying to portray that on screen, should work with the realities of the shoot itself, and then work out how to make it all appear realistic.

Tucker has created and developed several screen acting of a courses, and this book is an extension and explanation of a lifetime of work in the field. Containing over 50 acting exercises, this book leads the reader step-by-step through the elements of effective screen acting.

Refreshing in its informal approach and full of instructive anecdotes, Secrets of Screen Acting will be an invaluable guide for those who wish to master the art of acting on-screen.

5 out of 5 stars One incredible gem of knowledge after another!.......1998-09-11

During my first read through my jaw kept dropping as I came to understand how little I know about screen acting, even at my low level of experience.

This book did more to open my eyes to the virtually hidden peculiarities and demands of acting for the screen than anything I've ever read. The pages of review sheets at the back are worth the price of the book.

The style is readable and the author speaks with the authority of experience. I'm sure that this will turn out to be the best investment I've made in my fledgling career as a film actor. I'm going to give this book to my closest actor-friends. I can't think of a better way to show how much I value them.

Hurtes does a great job collaborating professional directors' opinions in order to portray the "other side" of the story- the people who choose who makes it and who doesn't. I want to be an actress, and this book helped me discover what to truly look out for when auditioning for a role. The book contains great stuff for any artist, be you an actor, model, dancer, etc. I would recommend this to any hopeful artist who needs a little incite!

          5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-07-13

I've been doing a lot of searching online about acting. I found some but I decided to get a book which I hoped would be more trutful and more exact. Well, it was! It gave information about a LOT of stuff. It seemed to be more about theater then movie acting but it was still a great book! Recommended reading: 12-20

          4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2004-07-05

I received this book as a gift. I had already been acting for a while, so some of the subjects I was already aware of. The book is a relatively quick read, but enjoyable. It covers basic things, like headshots, resumes, etc. I was most impressed by a small list of colleges with an excellent performing arts program. It covers a lot of topics, but nothing too thoroughly--like I said, a good beginner's book to open up the world of acting to someone who is unfamiliar with it. If you are looking for an in-depth history, technique, etc., this is not a wise choice. This is a fun book overall, and it definitely covers a lot of material.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning actors.......2001-09-01

I thought that this was a great book. Some stuff was really stuff that you would already probably know if you were serious about acting but I guess it's an ok book for beginners. It did help me a little.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for aspiring actors.......2001-01-18

This book is pretty good. Some of the chapters were a little off the subject, but for the most part this is a must-have.

This book takes you step by step, through the whole process. It tells you how to present your resume, what type of photo's you should have made of yourself, and how much it will cost to be a working actor.

The second chapter, "BASIC TOOLS OF THE ACTOR" tells how you can use your body as your tools. The book lists warm up exercises that you can do to prepare yourself for an audition or play. There are vocal exercises and more.

In the tenth chapter it tells how some agents and casting directors like to scam amuater actors. It tells how to avoid them and how to get out of a situation like that. It says to trust your feelings when you feel uncomfortable about something. You should get this book if you want to know how to begin acting.
