    Book Description

Steven Spielberg is hailed as one of the most influential and commercially successful film directors in motion picture history. Through his role in developing, directing, and driving the special effects of many of the biggest blockbusters in movie history, includingJaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, and Minority Report, Spielberg changed the way movies are made and left an indelible mark on popular culture. This biography traces his rise from shooting films as a shy young boy with the family's 8 mm camera to his first unpaid job at Universal Studios, to the rise of DreamWorks, the studio Spielberg founded and quickly turned into a filmmaking powerhouse. While Spielberg's best work may lie ahead, this biography puts his legendary career and work to date into perspective by offering analysis and commentary from fans and critics alike. Whether about an alien lost in suburbia or the battles of World War II, Spielberg has directed and produced many of the most talked about movies of the past 30 years. Students interested in the history of film and the filmmaking industry will find this biography endlessly fascinating. A timeline of significant events, a bibliography of print and electronic resources, and photographs round out this biography.

3 out of 5 stars Amazingly average book.......2005-06-17

With enough books chronicling the life and works of Steven Spielberg, this brief and sketchy tome hardly qualifies as one of the best. But I'm a hardcore Spielberg fan and have almost all the books written about him. Regardless, this is simply to fill a niggling itch, not necessarily for a good read. If you're looking for quality and sincere Spielberg books, Neil Sinyard and Ian Freer's excellent bios are great reading.

1 out of 5 stars superficial, innacurate, boring... bad........2004-05-24

If you've read a Profile on Mr. Spielberg in any magazine or seen one of the very bleak "behind the scenes" documentaries in one of his DVDs... you're more than qualified to write a better book than this one.

The back cover refers to the "book" as a "fascinating behind-the-scenes account of how Steven Spielberg really makes movies"... an utter LIE!! The chapter on "Jaws" for example, is only 4 pages long. I mean, the movie took forever to shoot, was plaged with trouble and was the first ever blockbuster... you could easily write a whole book with the creative process involved, not 4 pages.

I see that there's an used book priced at $ 0.93 it is expensive, don't buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Superficial at best.......2000-01-15

If you know nothing at all about Steven Spielberg, this book might be a good summary of his career. But if you are looking for personal insights, new depth or detailed film analysis, invest your book-buying money elsewhere. I was also put off by the fairly frequent denigrating remarks about various actors, screen writers and directors many of whom have careers that would seem worthy of some degree of respect.

        Book Description

Although the blockbuster is the most popular and commercially successful type of filmmaking, it has yet to be studied seriously from a formalist standpoint. This is in opposition to classical Hollywood cinema and International Art cinema, whose form has been analyzed and deconstructed in great detail. Directed By Steven Spielberg fills this gap by examining the distinctive form of the blockbuster. The book focuses on Spielberg's blockbusters, because he is the most consistent and successful director of this type of film - he defines the standard by which other Hollywood blockbusters are judged and compared. But how did Spielberg attain this position? Film critics and scholars generally agree that Spielberg's blockbusters have a unique look and use visual storytelling techniques to their utmost effectiveness. In this book, Warren Buckland examines Spielberg's distinct manipulation of film form, and his singular use of stylistic and narrative techniques. The book demonstrates the aesthetic options available to Spielberg, and particularly the choices he makes in structuring his blockbusters. Buckland emphasizes the director's activity in making a film (particularly such a powerful director as Spielberg), including: visualizing the scene on paper via storyboards; staging and blocking the scene; selecting camera placement and movement; determining the progression or flow of the film from shot to shot; and deciding how to narrate the story to the spectator.

Directed By Steven Spielberg combines film studies scholarship with the approach taken by many filmmaking manuals. The unique value of the book lies in its grounding of formal film analysis in filmmaking.

        Book Description

One of the great film directors of our time, Stanley Kubrick had a profound influence on motion pictures. He was a notoriously private man, rarely granting interviews. For the first time, his life will be portrayed in over 200 images from film, photographs, and the words and full-color paintings of Christiane Kubrick, his wife for over 42 years. Never before seen photographs offer a unique perspective on a man, his times, and his films-from his very first, Day of Flight (1950), through to his last and unrealized project, finished by Steven Spielberg, A.I. (2001). STANLEY KUBRICK: A Life in Pictures explores the many and varied aspects of its subject-the director, the producer, the photographer, the writer and, not least of all, the man himself.

5 out of 5 stars A photo chronicle of one of the greatest filmakers of all time.......2006-08-20

Although Stanley Kubrick made many other movies with a powerful message, I will always associate him with "2001: A Space Odyssey." The power of the movie overwhelmed me the first time I saw it and it still does each time I view it again. The music seems to penetrate your entire being and each time I watch it a new thought about the human condition pops into my mind. It is one of the few movies that you never seem to be able to completely talk out. I always wished that Kubrick had continued making films out of the additional novels by Arthur Clarke such as "2010." Kubrick's other films also have the quality of overwhelming you, viewing "Dr. Strangelove" is a life altering event, it points out the absurdity of a rational discussion concerning a nuclear war.
This book is not about the films that Kubrick made, but a chronicle of his life in photographs. Few of them are personal; almost all show him executing some act in the making of a movie. Generally, he is on the set of his films, we see stills from "Lolita", "Spartacus", "Full Metal Jacket", "Dr. Strangelove", "2001", "A Clockwork Orange", and "Eyes Wide Shut." The photos show him doing everything from examining a script to intensely watching a rehearsal to walking away at the end of the day. If you are a fan of Kubrick, and quite frankly I don't know how such a condition can be avoided, then this book will interest you. Showing him in the creation of his works, he was truly a man with vision, putting things down on film that stay with you long after the credits have disappeared.

4 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Camera.......2003-01-06

"Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures" is more of a compendium to the documentary video released with the Kubrick Collection boxed set than a book of its own inspration. It's a trip through times past for both wife and author Christiane Kubrick as well as for the viewer who grew up with Kubrick's marvelous films. The book allows a deeper and more accessible view of the Man Behind the Camera.

Watching Kubrick's films, one gets the sense that something greater than a single man is directing these movies. Looking at these behind the scenes photos I hear the words "Dont' pay attention to the man behind the camera," as Kubrick plays the Almighty Oz in the production of his films.

The book is presented in a large hardback volume with glossy pages; all of the photos are black and white. We see Stanley from an infant all the way through to his work on "Eyes Wide Shut." The final pages also offer some pre-production sketches for "Artificial Intelligence." It is less of a book to read than a book to look through, although there are small captions to each picture that Christiane gives the reader the time and place and offers a little insight into Stanley's thinking.

With a foreward by Stephen Spielberg (the eventual director for "A.I."), "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures" is designed for the Kubrick fan, but serves as a memoir for Mrs. Kubrick. As she mentions in the introduction, "The photographs will...correct the mistaken view of Stanley as some sort of isolationist misanthrope out of Dr. Mabuse by way of Howard Hughes."

4 out of 5 stars An insightful photographic odyssey........2002-11-01

'STANLEY KUBRICK: A Life In Pictures' (c. Oct 2002) by Mrs. Christiane Kubrick, is an insightful photographic odyssey of Stanley Kubrick, America's very original and probably only auteur director.

Mrs. Kubrick presented, in chronological order, rare family photographs of Stanley Kubrick from his childhood in the Bronx and through his teenage years in high school and working for LOOK magazine. This included his very first 1945 photograph of a newspaper vendor he sold for twenty-five dollars to that publication.

The chronology then continued as a mix of Stanley Kubrick in his various movie publicity stills and with candid photographs of the behind the scenes activity as Director Kubrick lined up his shots on movie cameras; interacted with his crew; conversed with his stars; "having a little game of chess"; or the very obvious serious discussions with cast and technicians. (The pictures of Stanley Kubrick cracking-up laughing on the set of '2001' are priceless; as are the touching photographs of him holding his young children.) The photographs continued until the filming of his last movie, 'Eyes Wide Shut', showing a mature and greying director.

And for those who follow the interesting lives of the actors in his films, 'STANLEY KUBRICK: A Life In Pictures' provided dozens of revealing off-camera images of his interactions with such noted personalities as: Marlon Brando; Kirk Douglas; Lawrence Olivier; James Mason; George C. Scott; and Sterling Hayden. Equally as interesting as his cinematographic technique was his managerial style as he presided over some of Hollywood's most powerful movie stars, dozens of cast and crew, and sometimes thousands of extras, which one can only infer from the objectivity of this black & white photographic collection.

This collection contained a touch of poignancy as photo #57 showed a publicity still of Stanley Kubrick, Sterling Hayden, and Kola Kwariani pouring over a chess game together in the chess club set of 'The Killing'. In this 1956 movie, Kola Kwariani played professional wrestler Maurice Oboukhoff, who instigated a very memoriable diversion for the race track robbery. In real life, Kola Kwarinani was a real wrestler and expert chess player who played in the same New York 'Chess & Checker Club' (alias The Flea House) as Stanley Kubrick. The neighborhood changed, and in February 1980 at age 77 while playing in 'The Flea House' Kola Kwariani was beaten to death by five black teenage hoodlums.

The book: 'STANLEY KUBRICK: A Life In Pictures' is neither biography nor history but simply an important collection of objective photography mutely capturing the working details, values, and personality of America's only world class movie director.

As a suggestion, first read the biography: 'STANLEY KUBRICK: A Biography' (c.1997) by Vincent LuBrutto, to fully appreciate Mrs. Christiane Kubrick's impressive photographic compilation. Only then does the revealing photographs of her husband answer the many questions induced by all the incomplete written biographies on Stanley Kubrick.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read for Spielberg fans and others.......2006-12-28

Steven Spielberg: Interviews is a great book on many levels. It's probably one of the only books about Spielberg that shows his more personal side and manner of speaking. The interviews give us a different different perspective of the man and show that he is not what everyone (or me at least) envisioned him to be.

Interesting, information, and with its own of sense of humor, this is definitely a must-read for Spielberg fans, filmmakers, and people period.

        5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT FILMMAKER; A BRILLIANT BOOK!.......2005-12-21

Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly the greatest movie director of our times. ALL his movies have been box-office hits. He is brilliant and dedicated to his craft! And people adore him! He's way cool ...

That's why it's so exciting to read a book by him, describing the last 25 years of his life. Awesome material!

Can't wait to see more of his movies! Many reviewers are saying that my TOONIES book would make a great movie ... a la Spielberg. I should be so lucky, but was lucky enough to meet and pose with Clint Eastwood many moons ago, so perhaps I'll get lucky again. Hint! Hint!

With all his fame and fortune and he still remains a very "nice, dear, down-to-earth" man. More of the actors should emulate his example.

        Go, Steven!

        5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2001-10-04

There's a lot of really good stuff in here.

First, the interviews span some 25 years, so you get a sense how he's matured and yet how he's stayed the same.

Second, Spielberg is very candid, so interviews with him tend to reveal more than many others.

Third, there's just a lot of good stuff in here, some of which you may have heard and some not. For instance, I had never heard the story of how, as an awkward 12 year old, he and a mentally retarded boy were dead last in a school race and their peers cheered the retarded boy to beat young Spielberg. Spielberg describes how he knew he had to let the boy with without him realizing it and did just that. And then he describes how after the race, after the others carried the retarded boy on their shoulders, Spielberg was both devastatingly happy and sad.

Or there's the anecdote about his encounter with Stanley Kubrick -- how the master was not as stand-offish as one might think, and yet how he sized up Spielberg with "his probing, questioning eyes, always looking at you to see if you're true or falso. To see what you're made of, to see what you have upstairs. His chess player's eyes. Real surgeon's eyes."

There's lots of other examples I can bring but if you have any interest in Spielberg or movies just go out and get the book. It's a great read about a fascinating man whose own character arc and maturity as a movie-maker is the stuff great stories are made of.

4 out of 5 stars An insightful, entertaining read........2000-10-05

I've been waiting a long time for a book like this. Populist filmmakers like Steven Spielberg are too often ignored by publishers who would rather print in-depth literature on the likes of Coppola or Scorsese, so it's nice to see a meaty tome such as this on the bookshelves. Spielberg lets rip on all the stuff you often wondered about whilst watching his films, and proves himself to be rather adept at delivering hilarious anecdotes. Unlike the George Lucas Interviews book, Spielberg isn't shy when it comes to discussing his private life. All in all, an enlightening read. Jolly good.

He has evolved from movie-obsessed teen to king of the blockbusters to a mature artist who balances "popcorn movies" with more thoughtful, issue-oriented films.

After a brief career in professional bodybuilding, Jake Steinfeld found his calling in helping others pump themselves up. Beginning as a personal trainer to Hollywood celebrities, he soon started his remarkably successful Body by Jake brand of health and fitness programs. Now he hopes to motivate readers to start their own businesses. His experience of learning on the fly and following his instincts led him to believe that street-smart, self-taught entrepreneurs like him have a unique perspective on starting, running, and growing a business that MBA teachers and graduates don't have. And he must be on to something--in addition to his workout videos and exercise products, he also started a 24-hour fitness television network (that he later sold for $500 million), a profession lacrosse league, and many other ventures.

In a humorous, down-to-earth way, Steinfeld offers practical tips on writing a business plan, building a team of partners, hiring and training employees, securing start-up money, branding and marketing, and even working with philanthropic organizations. Though the information he offers is not groundbreaking, the way he tells his own success story should inspire would-be entrepreneurs. Steinfeld obviously loves what he does and his enthusiasm is contagious. He wants people to not just build a career, but to build a life; something that makes them excited to go to work, or better yet, to not think of it as work at all. Breezy and fun to read, the book strives to help people find their motivation, pick a goal, learn from failures, and most importantly, never quit. Good advice for business or any other pursuit. --Shawn Carkonen

Body by Jake founder Jake Steinfeld has helped millions of people pump up their health, their bodies, and their self-confidence. But can he help you pump up your business? You bet! Whether you're already up and running or have always dreamed of having a great business, Jake is going to help you get to the next level and beyond.

Jake has seen a lot of big-name celebrities naked. No, not like that! Naked, as in "stripped" of the trappings of their fame and fortune. No entourages, no PR flaks, no designer handbags -- and no bull. These famous folks are people just like you, and they don't have anything that you haven't got.

As Jake taught them how to get and stay fit, he learned from them: what makes them tick, and what makes them successful. That knowledge has helped him turn a personal training business into a premier fitness product brand, a 24-hour fitness television network, a professional sports league, and instant recognition everywhere he goes.

Now it's your turn! You don't need an MBA to start your business, or to get the one you have into fantastic shape -- what you need is street smarts, practical knowledge, and a "don't quit!" attitude. Think of this book as "Business by Jake." It's an eye-opening success story and an entrepreneur's tool kit -- combined with a motivational kick in the "buttissimo" that is pure Jake! In addition to Jake's own amazing account, you'll also read insightful stories about Steven Spielberg, Tommy Hilfiger, Aaron Spelling, and other luminaries from Hollywood, professional sports, the business world and more. You'll read about the unique relationships Jake formed with each person, and what he learned from them even as he taught and inspired them to be their best. You'll learn proven strategies to help you:

          * Start, build, and grow a business. * Make connections, establish a network, and put together a great team. * Find partners and investors. * Build a high-profile brand. * Develop the courage to take risks. * Turn failures into springboards to success. * Build goodwill and good business through community involvement and charity.

Jake's message is simple: If he can do it, anyone can. And all those famous people? Remember, Jake has seen them "naked," and they've got nothing on you!

So get pumped up, don't quit, and start flexing your business muscles!

"Jake is the quintessential American success story. Once you've read his book, you'll realize why!" -- Tommy Hilfiger, Fashion designer, Tommy Hilfiger Corporation

"Jake's inspiration and direct, down-to-earth approach to business gave me as a woman building a brand the confidence never to quit and to follow my dreams." -- Cristina Ferrare, Founder, Cristina Ferrare Designs

"I've learned more about business from Jake than I did at Princeton! This book is gold. Read it!" -- Dave Morrow, Founder and CEO, Warrior Lacrosse

"Jake Steinfeld is the master entrepreneur. If I had this book when I started out twenty years ago, our company would be years ahead of where we are today." -- Mark S. Mastrov, Founder, Chairman, and CEO, 24 Hour Fitness

"As a young entrepreneur, I never had a road map for what to do. Jake combines his street-smart hustle and boardroom muscle in this real-world example of how to be a self-made business success." -- Kevin Plank, Founder and CEO, Under Armour

"Jake has a unique combination of determination and real-world business skills that have made him a successful entrepreneur. His passionate speech at the Stanford Graduate School of Business entrepreneurship club back in 2002 was an inspiration for me to found the Golden Baseball League." -- Dave Kaval, Past President, Stanford Graduate School of Business Entrepreneurship Speakers Forum, Founder and CEO, Golden Baseball League

"Body By Jake started it all. With Jake's pioneering leadership in the fitness and personal training profession, the revolution began. His inspiration has led us to develop the nation's first four-year academic degree in Personal Fitness Training." -- Ken Baldwin, M.Ed., Program Advisor, Department of Health and Kinesiology, Purdue University

5 out of 5 stars I've Seen a Lot of Famous People Naked, and They've Got Nothing on You! Business Secrets from the Ultimate Street-Smart Entrepre.......2007-07-16

I've Seen a Lot of Famous People Naked, and They've Got Nothing on You! is an inspirational guide to business written by Jake Steinfeld of Bodies by Jake, fitness guru to the rich and famous. I have to admit that I was a little nervous when I agreed to review this book. I was curious about Jake's secrets to his success but I worried that the book was going to be a loud, chaotic, chest beating book filled with name dropping and bragging.

I was so very wrong. Before I had even completed the first chapter, I realized that the author genuinely wanted to share his experiences (including his own insecurities and failures that drove him to achieve his version of success) and his enthusiasm with others so that they could realize their own dreams. Moreover, the author pulled no punches. He stated plainly that achieving success demands commitment and hard work (or rather hard play). Therefore, if you don't truly love what you do, don't even bother to try. These unique aspects made reading this book like having a trusted friend sharing his enthusiasm, his experiences and the resources he had collected over the years in order to help you succeed in your own goals.

I've Seen a Lot of Famous People Naked, and They've Got Nothing on You! creates a deep empowering feeling that will change the way the reader views his or her own dreams and will inspire the reader to commit fully to working towards these goals. Words by Jake to take to heart "A wish changes nothing: a decision changes everything." "Aim high. Then aim higher!" and "Success is failure turned inside out."

4 out of 5 stars Jake Steinfeld builds bodies - and boosts your business.......2006-03-08

He tells good name-dropping yarns about film producer Steven Spielberg and TV producer Aaron Spelling, among others, but he also refers to his grandmother and his parents as major influences. 5 out of 5 stars Great Everyday Advice From Jake!.......2005-11-15

Despite the catchy title and Jake Steinfelds fitness past the book I've Seen A Lot Of Famous People Naked isn't a weight loss guide. Even a recent feature in Star Magazine failed to mention this important fact. Steinfeld is a self-made millionaire and in this book he offers real life advice to people who wish to become entrepreneurs. As a matter of fact the books subtitle is "Business Secrets From The Ultimate Street-Smart Entrepreneur." As other reviewers have mentioned the advice is basic such as--do something the interests you and pick a partner you can live with. However, some of the information in the book can be quite helpful to the aspiring entrepreneur who might think they know everything. Steinfeld offers the suggestion of when you go to the bank know exactly how much money you need and be prepared to detail how you will pay back money. Granted a lot of the information in the book is so called getting started in business common sense but if you are just getting started and need a road map I've Seen A Lot Of Famous People Naked is a great book to follow when you are getting started with your business venture.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to the master of cinema.......2005-10-20

If you want a good read about cinema's most amazing director, then this is the book for you. It contains lots of really great insight not just on shooting the movie, but how it even started. Though author Douglas Brode tends to get a little too political, it is a really good book that I keep coming back to. Read at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars excellent text, well researched, and fun to read.......2003-05-04

This book is a great read for the major films of Spielberg. It is done with a great deal of research by the author, who puts together a very good story line of the producer/director and how he and his films progressed over time. The author also provides excellent background information on the films, from both a technical point of view and also the creative story line. The text layout, photos, and great front and back cover photos are there to flesh out the films. It is also a fun book to read. All put together, this is a very good book to understand Spielberg, his movies, his life, and his impact on very successful creative and commercial 20th century movies.

5 out of 5 stars The films of Steven Spielberg.......2002-05-07

From his early T.V films to Saving Private Ryan, this book covers all the facets of Spielberg's work including unknown facts about the production of his films and supplementary information. With rare color production photos and stills, this book is a must- have for any Spielberg or film enthusiast.

            Book Description

The Films of Steven Spielberg provides for the first time a collection of critical writings by professional film critics about the director and his films, bringing together many articles and reviews scattered in often inaccessible specialist publications and professional journals. The opinions vary from complimentary to critical, but they definitely provide a well-rounded view of the films and the director. Twelve of Spielberg's major box office sellers are represented in essays that vary complexity ranging from the heavily theoretical to the more general. For both film students and professionals in the film industry.
