5 out of 5 stars most missed book.......2002-08-21

This is the best textbook I ever had, and I sold it for some ($$$) at the end of a semester to buy a bus ticket. Very mad; I miss the book, but it's so expensive. It's amazing the way the author incorporates all sorts of literary allusions in this physics book, such as offering an interesting hypothesis on the optical illusion of the egyptians getting swallowed by the red sea while chasing the jews. Every chapter, light becomes a metaphor for so many things, the way we see, the obstacles, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Physics of light for everyone else.......2000-06-15

I first discovered this book when I asked a physics professor down the hall for an explanation of diffraction and refraction in relation to some daytime sky phenomenon. He handed me Seeing the Light, and before long I coveted the volume. The authors dress down optical physics into explanations that anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics can understand, relating optical phenomenon to everyday events and objects. The diagrams and photos help clarify the explanation. And practical, hands-on suggested activities help drive the point home. This book would be great for physics teachers -- or teachers at any level. How about pinhole cameras or illusion drawings for class projects?

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2004-04-21

I am enchanted with this book, one of the most exquisite books I have seen in a long time. The Lakota way is a simple but universal way of living. It is a book I want to share with many.
I was blessed to share so many lakota traditions and even though I don't practice those traditions any more I have them in my heart.
This book just brought so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars A Lakota Worldview.......2003-01-20

There is a joke that one often hears when traveling within Native circles. The joke asks what is the average size of a Native Family? The answer is five, a father, a mother, a son and daughter and one anthropologist. It has been written that Native Americans are the most studied but least understood people on the Earth. Native author Michael Dorris states this thought in a more direct way. He writes that Native Americans are the most lied about people on the face of the planet. Much of this discontent with the written record about Native Peoples is due to the fact that much of this record has been recorded by Non-Native people and thus passed through a cultural filter that distorts the reality of Native experience and tradition. "Standing in the Light, a Lakota Way of Seeing," is a collaborative effort by the authors Severt Young Bear Sr. and Dr. Ronnie Theisz to record an account of the world view of the Lakota people that was written from the viewpoint and understanding of a person that has lived his life within the traditional culture of the Lakota People. Severt Young Bear Sr. was born on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1934 and lived his life in the traditional community of Porcupine, SD. In his life he was a rancher, a ranger, a tribal councilman, a singer with and drum keeper of the acclaimed Porcupine Singers that appeared in the movies "Dances With Wolves, " and "Thunderheart," an instructor at Oglala Lakota College, and founder of International Brotherhood Days, a cross cultural forum that is held the second week of July each year at the Young Bear dance grounds just outside Porcupine, SD.. This book is a rare look from the inside of Lakota culture from one that lived within that context. The work touches on the past of the Lakota People, and focusses on the importance of traditions of the culture to the survival and identity of the Lakota Nation. As a self-styled student of Lakota culture I value this book as one of the most relavant books in my collection. Highly recommended. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5 out of 5 stars Inside Lakota Culture.......2002-12-25

"Standing in the Light: A Lakota Way of Seeing" is a print version of conversations between R.D. Theisz, a college professor, and Severt Young Bear, a Lakota singer, historian, and cultural traditionalist. "Standing in the Light" is a cornucopia of cultural information about the Lakota people. The book begins with a discussion about Severt Young Bear's relatives and ancestors, followed by a very brief history of the Sioux people. Unfortunately, the book went to press about the time Severt Young Bear died, in 1993.

"Standing in the Light" has four parts. The first section deals with names in Indian culture. According to Severt, names are of central importance in Lakota culture. Young Bear explains how the people received their names and what names mean in Lakota (his own Lakota name is Hehaka Luzahan, or Swift Elk). Agency officials anglicized Lakota names in the 1880's for a census on the reservation and then applied these names to descendents in perpetuity. This bothers Severt because it means descendents in his family do not earn their name, an important part of the Lakota life process. "Young Bear" comes from Severt's grandfather, who received the name to reflect his accomplishments in battle; he was a fearless warrior who fought like a bear when cornered. The name "Severt" comes from his father's war experience, when Severt's father befriended a Swede and promised the man to name his son after him.

The second part of the book discusses oral traditions in Lakota culture. There are some great stories in this section, like the story about Sio Paha (translated as the Medicine Hill). This place received the name Medicine Hill because in prereservation days it was the site of a test between powerful medicine men. The medicine men would practice their magic on each other in order to discover who had the most powerful medicine. Whenever a man was felled by magic, he was out of the contest. Severt discusses one contest where a heyoka (a sacred clown, or someone whose role in the tribe was to make fun of everyone else) won by practicing medicine he learned from the bumblebee. There are more stories in this section, all of which are fascinating and informative.

The third section covers Severt's career as a musician and his days as a member of the Porcupine Singers, a Lakota drum group who toured powwows and other important Indian gatherings. There are all types of songs in the Lakota world, from honoring songs to dancing and social songs. Many of the social songs helped Indians get together back in the days when the government frowned on Indian gatherings. The Rabbit dance is a good example of a social song. Rabbit songs are quite simple lyrically, but young people used to gather in someone's house to dance to these songs. Of course, all these musical gatherings required musicians, and this is where Severt brings in the importance of the drum and its role in creating and expressing the music. He also discusses how life on the road for the successful Indian musician is just as stressful as it is for any type of musician: egos get large, cars break down, and arguments over money usually ensue.

The final section of the book is Severt's examination of what is wrong with Lakota society. Young Bear turns out to be quite conservative as he discusses the problems of the reservation world. His arguments for a return to personal responsibility, a healthy diet, respect for the elders, and responsible childrearing not only have lessons for Lakotas, but also are important for all cultures. Severt's involvement in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and its stand at Wounded Knee in the 1970's, covered in some depth in the book, further highlights his concern for cultural issues.

At the end of the book, Severt sums up his reasons for agreeing to create this book. Severt believes every powwow or gathering of Indians has four circles. The first circle is the one in which Indians are dancing and taking part in their culture. As the circles move outwards, one finds Indians who are not as aware of the cultural activities going on in the first circle. The last circle, the circle on the farthest reaches of the gathering, holds the lost Indians, those who are afraid of learning about their culture and so lose themselves in drugs, loose sex, or alcohol. Severt wants to bring all of the other circles into the first circle, into the "light," so all the Lakotas may partake in their culture.

"Standing in the Light" is a powerful statement. For those who wish to learn about Indian culture, look no further than this book. I am surprised there are not more reviews of this amazing survey of Lakota cultural ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The "Real" culture.......2002-10-28

Beyond feathers and bells, "Standing in the Light" gives non-Native people a glimpse some of the real culture and values of the Lakota people. What values are held in high esteem, and how do they work in the everyday life of the people, are just a few of the answers given. Long overdue for those seeking to learn the culture beyond the feathers and bells of a Powwow.

Book Description

"The more of your dark side that you can embrace, the more of your light you receive," says Debbie Ford. In this insightful interview with Michael Toms, of New Dimensions Radio, Ford explains that to live an integral life, a grander whole, you must first blend all the aspects of who you are—the light along with the dark, the positive along with the negative. "We are a society that is taught to point our fingers in blame—to blame our parents, to blame our schools....I think that blame is us not doing our own work." Something as devastating as the end of a marriage can transform our lives, and turn ruin into renewal. Join Michael Toms and Debbie Ford as they focus on self-healing and self-discovery though the light and the shadow.

Other topics explored in this dialogue include how addiction can take on many forms from drugs and alcohol to busyness, drama, and food—and can be one of the greatest teachers; the seven spiritual laws of healing; and how to ask the key questions of your shadow side and know what it's trying to tell you.

5 out of 5 stars A word from Debbie Ford.......2003-10-17

Hi,

I just wanted you to know that this tape, entitled Embracing Your Dark Side, is not an audio program, but a recording of an interview I did with New Dimensions several years ago. While it is a great interview (I gave it five stars because Michael Toms is a five-star interviewer), I have heard feedback that some people were disappointed because they were not clear about this fact before they purchased it. If you like interviews, you will like this tape. And if you're looking for something more in-depth, I would recommend that you buy The Dark Side of the Light Chasers or The Secret of the Shadow on audio book.

Best regards,
Debbie

1 out of 5 stars An interview, a disappointment.......2003-02-23

This tape was a disappointment to me. It sounded more like an info-mercial than a serious communication of ideas. It seemed like it was produced to promote one of the author's books, not a tape that should be sold.

5 out of 5 stars Split your personality and become whole!.......2002-12-08

This audio tape, like Debbie Ford's wonderful books, will speak directly to you. With all respect to our personal uniqueness, we all have multiple aspects of our personalities, and it is through recognizing and accepting ALL of who we are that we will find the freedom and peace of mind we seek.

Debbie Ford is a clear, inspirational, and entertaining guide along this sometimes difficult journey.

2 out of 5 stars Too much sex and not enough substance..........2006-12-18

Everyone and their brothers are having sex every 5 seconds which is great if there was enough substance to the book to make it believable. It's like the author almost forgot there was more to the story than sex until the last few chapters. I really felt this book was a let down in regards to the whole O'Fallon series.

5 out of 5 stars terrific finish to the O'Fallens' "U" trilogy .......2006-12-09

His adopted family needs him so Quaid O'Fallon leaves Alaska after quitting his Coast Guard Search and Rescue job to come home to Fallon's Landing; he feels strongly about family ever since Rory adopted him as one of his own. Apparently Rory has problems with a missing mother and a baby Bonnie.

Cynthia James left a failed fashion design business and an even bigger failure of a marriage behind in New York to come home to Fallon's Landing with her eight years old son in tow. She hopes to regroup and start anew with no man except her offspring in her life. However, her first encounter back home is with Quaid, whom she yearned for as a teen. He has the same thoughts she has, anyone but her as he yearned for her as a teen and still wants her though he is Mississippi and she is Manhattan. While this couple falls in love, the search to find and protect Bonnie's mother from cold-blooded killers continues though increasingly it seems too late.

This is a terrific finish to the O'Fallens' "U" trilogy (see 'TIL THERE WAS and THE WAY U LOOK TONIGHT) as the story line focuses on the third son finding love while the subplot that has run through each tale of Bonnie's mom reaches the climax. Readers will appreciate the O'Fallen four doubling and more as Dianne Cantrell provides a terrific loser to a fine saga.

5 out of 5 stars U Can't Go Wrong With a Castell Romance.......2006-11-26

I'll Be Seeing U concludes the "Four O'Fallons and a Baby" comic romantic suspense trilogy from Dianne Castell, and the ending is extremely satisfying despite my regret at saying good-bye to the O'Fallon clan. This final book showcases the love story of Quaid O'Fallon and Cynthia James and wraps up romantic and suspense storylines from the first two books in the series. The secondary romance between Sally and Demar takes a very rocky road to its happily-ever-after, and it was fun revisiting the other O'Fallon brothers and their soulmates. Castell explores her wonderful world of Fallon's Landing, which she has populated with a comic cast of quirky characters -- from the Columbo-like PI who's a Magnum-wannabe to the two nuns who are anything but pious. Cynthia's son, an endearing egg-head, is a standout in Castell's crowd of memorable characters. And her Southern-fried humor will having you laughing out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Sexy, and Romantic!.......2006-11-15

This third and final installment in the O'Fallon series is just as fun and sexy as the first two: Till There was U, and The Way U Look Tonight.

Cynthia had a successful clothes designing business, a wonderful son...and a lousy husband who drove her into bankruptcy. Now she's coming home to get her life back together. She's tired of being treated badly by men, and the only guy she wants in her life is her precious son, Lawrence.

Quaid O'Fallon, was the town bad boy who joined the Coast Guard. Now he's returned to help out his family. He decides he wants Cynthia, (whom he had a crush on as a teenager) and sets out to persuade her how good they would be together. He quickly develops a wonderful relationship with Lawrence, and as much as Cynthia tries to resist his charm, she finds she's unable to deny the sparks between them. Quaid has that bad boy appeal, mixed with a sexy vulnerability that makes him my favorite of the O'Fallon guys (and that's a very sexy bunch!!)

The chemistry between Quaid and Cynthia is steamy, and Quaid's growing relationship with Lawrence is heartwarming. As always, Dianne delivers funny dialogue, sexy romance, and even suspense with the storyline of baby Bonnie and her mother.

I highly recommend all three of the books in this series, and was truly sorry to see it come to an end. I love Dianne's stories, and eagerly look forward to her next book!

5 out of 5 stars More fun from Dianne Castell!.......2006-11-15

When Quaid O'Fallon learns of trouble at home involving his baby half-sister and her missing mother, he quickly abandons his Coast Guard job and without a backward glance, returns to Fallon's Landing to be with his father. Quaid was cruelly neglected as a child, stubbornly surviving an abusive environment, he was fortunate enough to be adopted by Rory O'Fallon who raised him as one of his own.

Quaid's first night at home finds him face to face with Cynthia Landon James, a snobby little rich girl who, being a few years older and the stuff of a young boy's dreams, never gave Quaid the time of day. Now she too has returned home, albeit under different circumstances. Cynthia has divorced the cheating husband who ran her successful clothing design business into the ground, resulting in her and their eight year old son, Lawrence, being left with absolutely nothing. Cynthia returns to her mother's home-turned-B&B, shocked to find her gorgeous childhood home looking more than a little shabby, and her mother imbibing uncharacteristic quantities of liquor. Cynthia has sworn off men - all men - and is determined to raise Lawrence on her own.

Passions quickly flare between Quaid and Cynthia, and each and every time they are together, Cynthia insists that it has to be the last time. Quaid feels differently and while he has his hands full with the mystery of his father's missing lover, the relationship woes of a dear family friend, and running his father's business, all he truly wants his hands full of is Cynthia. He just can't get enough of her and while he is determined to have more than just a brief fling, convincing her that they could have much more may prove to be the most difficult of all of the tasks in front of him.

Cynthia stands up for herself, for Quaid, and for her friends in town, proving herself to be a strongly independent woman, and not just the snooty bit of fluff that everyone remembers. Cynthia's son, Lawrence, visibly grows into a strong young man under the guidance of Quaid, and the three of them make a lovely family. Secondary characters, their relationships, heartaches and motives are vital to Cynthia and Quaid's story.

I'LL BE SEEING U sadly concludes the story of Dianne Castell's O'Fallons. It has been great fun reading this entertaining series, and this final book provides a satisfying ending, tying all loose ends up in a tidy little bow. While I will miss this heartwarming family, I look forward to Dianne's next release.

    2 out of 5 stars Boring..........2007-05-12

Maybe this is 2007, I find this style of photography doesn't sell very well in today consumer tastes. Yes, Mr. Blair is a master as well as Zucker; nonetheless, my clients want natural and fun. If I pose them and hold for the shot, their reaction is "I don't like to pose." On the other hand, there are some good lighting tips and hand position that are important to keep in mind.

1 out of 5 stars Very disapointed !.......2006-12-13

I expected this book to be very useful, since it's written by a master portrait photographer. But I found it to be completely useless. Sample photos on this book look ackward and posing forced and also very, very outdated. It's the only photography book I own that I wish i never bought!. Sorry to say, but I considere it a waste of my money!

    2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed..........2006-08-09

Nothing struck me as intriguing, interesting or new in this book. It's just a book of mostly mundane very normal typical photography. I was hoping for a new spin on the old habit.

5 out of 5 stars The Master Strikes Again.......2006-07-07

Along with Monte Zucker, Don Blair is one of our two living masters of people photography, and this book is a useful introduction to one of the key tools of portraiture: light. It features excellent photos that illustrate all the most important styles of lighting. Lighting diagrams would have helped, especially for beginners, but there is a lot you can learn from the examples and tips provided in this interesting compendium of techniques.

1 out of 5 stars Superficial and of very little practical use........2005-11-24

I was very disappointed when I got this book (which I bought right here based on the previous positive reviews) - after about ten minutes I found I had wasted my money for just another photo book which serves more as some kind of portfolio for the author's work instead of delivering lots of useful information to help the reader. One might get over this if Blair's images were indeed outstanding - but unfortunately the are very conventional, very stiffly posed, and VERY 80's style! They annoy me so much it is hard to concentrate at the text.
The lighting advice given is very basic and only loosely connected with the image examples given. As a professional photographer I was looking for a book with a strategic view on portraiture lighting, how to create different moods and emotions with a broad choice of light sources, interpreting personality, some new ideas to spark my creativity. I guess will have to look elsewhere...

        Book Description

Beautifully printed on fine, glossy paper, this book introduces young readers to the enduring pleasures of art by showing how its makers use light. Author Gillian Wolfe draws on famous artists from various times and cultures, revealing how they depict dramatic light, mysterious light, cold light, hot light, dappled light, rainy light, light patterns, light shapes, and many more forms of light. Interactive exercises have readers look at a painting, unravel how the light was drawn, and give evidence for the conclusions they draw.

          Book Description

The California energy crisis is not simply about a lack of electricity--it is about who owns the production and distribution of that electricity. As state after state agrees to deregulation, the utility industry is approaching a concentration not seen since the Power Trust of the 1930s.

Seeing the Light urges us to change the rules now and create a future that includes affordable, locally-owned electricity. The book chronicles hopeful new developments and reminds us that the best way to prevent another crisis is to build a better system.

"David [Morris] digests the complex history of electricity in America to provide a concise context for our choices. Then he proposes a set of understandable 'new rules' to guide society through the monumental chess game of deregulation. An hour or two spent with this book will provide any reader with the background to participate knowledgeably in one of the most far-reaching policy debates of our time." -- Denis Hayes, president of the Bullitt Foundation and former director of the Solar Energy Research Institute (from the foreword)
