DOES GOD EXIST ONLY IN OUR HEARTS?
According to highly esteemed scientist Gary E. Schwartz, Ph.D., there is compelling scientific evidence that we no longer have to accept God on faith alone. Through a multidisciplinary approach, Harvard University-educated Dr. Schwartz blends psychology, quantum physics, and mathematics to examine the science of spirit. Faith and science are not mutually exclusive, and a better understanding of their relationship can lead us to recognize how God operates in everything.
Trained in the scientific method as an "open-minded skeptic," Dr. Schwartz was taught how to raise questions, turn them into hypotheses, and design experiments to test them. He was not trained to consider the nature of God. And yet, his scientific research led him directly to the discovery of God's existence in intelligent evolution and everyday life.
Scientifically rigorous and spiritually reassuring, this eye-opening book is a wake-up call for anyone who wonders about life's true meaning and who longs to believe in the existence of a universal intelligence.

Interesting...yet...a disappointing read.......2007-08-31
I like the idea of conducting experiments to prove there is a God...scientists should do more of it...but this book unfortuneatly proves nothing of the sort. My heavens! (no pun intended), what does sandpaintings, computers, buildings or anything else man made have to do proving this theory? We already know humans can create this stuff, and that it takes a little more than putting all the components together in a shoebox and shaking them up. As brilliant as we are none of these things come close to what God has created. Oceans, the universe, humans..and their minds. So sandpaintings can't be made by chance, they need human help and humans are G.O.D. (guiding, organizing, designing) beings. Tell me something I didn't know! Frankly Gary, you lost me here.
On a positive note...why I gave the two stars..I did like the experiments on the first six pages. I think it encourages us to use our sixth sense and I also agree with the part about talking with the universe...or God and asking for what you need. Holy Bible 101. I suggest you try some new experiments. This time EMBRACE chance. Even COMPOUND CHANCE!
This is my first "review"..........2007-07-14
Reading some of the reviews on some of the books, it never ceases to amaze me how "reviews" are typically being generated by mostly "opinionated" readers. You can almost observe the undisciplined "mind" to react like a "knee-jerk reaction". When it hits a "nerve", very few choose to "learn" rather they "react" (histrionically).
========================================
I found the book refreshing compared to some of the "in the box" kind of reading material. I personally know individuals who prefer "in the box" type of journalism like Lee Strobel's "Case for Faith" book. It's like drinking "decaf". I enjoy a bit of stimulation once in a while. I found this book stimulating.
Peace
How can this be published?!.......2007-05-15
As something to take up my time and make me think for at least a little bit, this book is excellent. As something that is supposed to provide further evidence for the idea of God ("G.O.D."), this book is terrible.
I'm a person who's LOOKING for a reason to beleive in God, and Dr. Schwartz certainly cannot help me out.
His writing style is simplistic and to the point (almost too much so), and there is nothing unclear. I applaud him for this, because most books on the same topic most certainly suffer from a terrible affliction of lack of clarity. Whoever says that this book is a tough read is a moron; it's laid out too simply for anything to be missed. The toughest part of the the reading is the bit about the random number selection experiment Dr. Schwartz performs, and even that is well-written and simple. He's almost as good as Sam Greene is at explaining quantum physics and relativity to the layman.
But, his analogies are poor. For instance, the logic is out of order: He says, correctly, that there was a point in time where almost everyone believed the earth was flat, only to be proven wrong; ditto for a geocentric universe; he then uses this "flow of thought" to say that "most people" think that there is no Creator, no "G.O.D.", and they are about to be proven wrong. This against the flow of logic, and a poor generalization about the world if anything. He also chooses to use a analogy similar to the 747-out-of-a-junkyard analogy to evolutionary theory, an analogy proven illogical and wrong time and time again by people on both sides of the religious debate. (His analogy has to do with sand paintings, but it is identical nonetheless to the 747 analogy.)
Dr. Schwartz also exhibits as poor of a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory as I've ever seen in my life. He claims to have read Dawkins' "The Blind Watchmaker", a book which he quotes out of context and makes wrong conclusions about based on these out-of-context quotations. He completely misses the role of chance in evolutionary theory, made VERY evident by the mere 6 or 7 moronic sentences he devotes to the topic.
His understanding of data anlaysis for the random number experiment was also poor. I won't go into details; just know that he's plotting the wrong thing, and that randomness begets order. I know how to analyze data---he does not/
Again, this book as a book for another viewpoint and clear writing style is good. But, this book as a book meant to be taken seriously as a counterargument to atheism is terrible. I'm looking for a reason to believe in God, and Dr. Schwartz gave me nothing out of this besides a loss of $15.
What are the G.O.D. experiments?.......2007-04-03
What are the G.O.D. experiments? Dr. Gary E. Schwartz, a Harvard-trained psychologist, attempts to lead us through a set of experiences and reflections that converge to answer the question of all questions: is there a God? He and co-author William Simon have written an intriguing book that claims to use science and logic to answer this ultimate question. Given Schwartz's rigorous training (which he reminds us of throughout the book) one comes to expect something in the way of data and experimentation, especially given the title. The reader of this book needs to ask one simple question to determine whether or not Schwartz and Simon deliver: namely, what are the G.O.D. experiments?
Are the G.O.D. experiments Dr. Gary Schwartz's ten day long escapade throughout southern Arizona (these are carefully controlled laboratory conditions?) testing the validity of a British psychic named Christopher Robinson? Robinson, who Schwartz describes alternately as a blue-collar worker with marginal income and as a psychic whose faultless predictions have led to the capture of escaped murderers, IRA bombers, and crooked cops, came all the way from England to have his abilities tested by Schwartz, the famous author of such books as The Living Energy Universe (with Linda Russek), The Truth About Medium (also co-authored with Simon), and The Afterlife Experiments (co-authored with Simon, foreword by Deepak Chopra). Dr. Schwartz assures us that Robinson's predictions provide unassailable proof of his abilities though the psychic seems unable to ascertain Schwartz's own honesty and motivations:
"I subsequently learned that Christopher could be unreasonably suspicious at times--no doubt because of his dangerous work as an undercover agent and his extraordinary sensitivity as a psychic."
The so-called experiment that Schwartz designed for Robinson involved using his co-author (Simon) and wife as co-experimenters and a set of envelopes with psychic predictions as the data to be tested. Amazingly, this experiment parallels many prior `experiments' performed by Vaudeville magicians in front of their audiences and by Johnny Carson in front of millions of his viewers. But after reading this entertaining account of scientist and psychic, one is left uncertain whether this can be deemed an experiment at all let alone evidence for G.O.D.--Schwartz's acronym for the "guiding, organizing, designing process."
Perhaps the G.O.D. experiments are the various coincidences that Dr. Schwartz has experienced: his uncanny conversation one night with a God who called himself Sam (whom he selectively credits as using the name Sam from the Hebrew Shmu'el (`name of God' or `heard of God') rather than from Samael (Hebrew `venom of God') or Samiel (`the blind God')), his strange encounter with the heir of a diamond fortune, the bizarre repetition of the number 11 all around him when he taught at Yale, or the Kabbalistic path that led him straight to his very favorite pet, a Cardigan Welsh corgi named Willie. Sadly, after reading this book carefully one will have no clear answer about the G.O.D. experiments. Nevertheless, Schwartz will continue to assure us (as he does throughout) that "The G.O.D. Experiments presents a body of evidence from physics, mathematics, psychology, and parapsychology that provides compelling reasons to posit the existence of intelligent design everywhere present in the universe and daily life." Schwartz and Simon have put together a highly readable book sure to find a place on the bookshelf of any fan of Deepak Chopra. But if one who is scientifically inclined reads the book, it will undoubtedly disappoint.
Definitely worth a read.......2007-03-30
Brilliant. Eye-opening, thought-provoking, and highly readable. This book answered just the questions I needed answered and gave me hope. Readers need to be open-minded, unlike the way society has been for millenia.

Book Description
Kirby Nickel loves basketball. He loves watching basketball. He loves talking about basketball. The only problem is he can't play basketball. But coach has a plan for Kirby and the supremely untalented seventh-grade team. It involves the guys playing nearly nakednbsp;-- only in their briefs. Maybe the so-called Stealth Sportswear (think: The Emperor's New Clothes) will really inspire the team. Maybe. And maybe, just maybe, Kirby will find out who his real father is.
Customer Reviews:
Air Ball my life's in briefs.......2006-06-06
This book was great it kept me wondering what was going to happen next, and If you like basketball you will love the book Air Ball my life's in briefs.
The book Air ball my life's in briefs is about a boy named Kirby Nickel, who grew up in a basketball loving city, but the thing is he didn't really like it. Kirby thinks that the Kansas City star Brett McGrew is his father. Kirby and his friend Bragger find evidence to prove it. They go through so much trouble trying to find out the truth. Kirby had to try out for the basketball team, and his friend Bragger voted him for team captain, and Kirby couldn't turn it down. But the only way he could meet Brett McGrew was he had to be the leader of the team. Kirby didn't want to be captain for the fact that he didn't know one thing about basketball, and he didn't want to deal with the coach. At the end of the book you will never guess who his dad is.
An encouraging, uplifting, rewarding and perfect story.......2005-10-12
This book is delightful. I chuckled, grinned, laughed out loud, and empathized with each character in turn. Kirby Nickel is a seventh grader who lives in Stuckey Kansas, population 334, a basketball crazy town. Kirby is clumsy and nerdy, shunned by jocks, terrified of his P.E. coach, an orphan raised by his grandmother. He's the self-described worst basketball player ever. Stuckey is the hometown of Kansas
University hero and NBA icon Brett McGrew. Stuckey has not had a winning season since McGrew was in school and Coach Mike Armstrong is determined this year will end that losing streak. Most boys in Stuckey dream of basketball scholarships, playing for Kansas University, then heading off to the NBA like their hero, McGrew. Kirby dreams of riding the bench with cool confidence, of injuries to keep him off the team, and of locating a father who disappeared before he was born. He believes Brett McGrew is his father. But will McGrew
reject him? Kirby knows too well that sometimes the thing you want the most in the world doesn't want you back.
K.U. is retiring McGrew's jersey and invites the 7th grade team from Stuckey to participate. Kirby's team members are seriously bad players. To boost their confidence and enhance
team spirit, Coach Armstrong presents the boys with invisible "stealth uniforms". In other words, they practice in their underwear. To Kirby's surprise, he's elected team captain, a position he takes seriously. The boys improve dramatically while practicing in their underwear. They learn to function as a team, thanks to Kirby's influence and the stealth uniforms.
The characters in Airball are perfection, presented with humor and compassion as each learns the value of teamwork, friendship, equality, and hope while playing skivvy basketball. Kirby is an appealing character. Coach Armstrong is a strong role model who sympathizes with the team because he has his own secret dreams and disappointments. And Kirby's teammates are typical boys longing for acceptance and striving to excel. Airball is perfection and highly recommended.
Kansas Underwear Basketball.......2005-08-27
This book is hilarious! I laughed so hard I thought I was going to wake the entire house. And, every time I stopped, I turned the page and laughed again.
Poor Kirby! Kirby loves basketball as much as everyone in his basketball-crazy Kansas town. The problem? He isn't very good. But, he must make the team and have a winning season if he wants a chance to go to Allen Fieldhouse to participate when KU retires the jersey of Stuckey's own future-NBA-Hall-of-Famer, Brett McGrew.
Kirby thinks McGrew is his dad and it's Kirby's and only chance to meet him. But, first--he and the rest of the seventh grade team must live through the coach's extreme coaching tactics: Stealth Uniforms. Yes, they're playing in their undies!
If you've ever experienced life in a small town that revolves around youth or college sports--a town where the youth sport IS their "professional" team, you'll appreciate this book. Mix in the coach's new uniforms (Emperor's New Clothes-style), a boy who risk just about anything (including the humiliation of playing basketball in his underwear) to meet his long-lost father, a trouble-making cousin who helps Kirby become captain of the team, the thrill of victory and some harmless nosing around to find proof that McGrew is his dad and you have a recipe for a great afternoon of rural basketball reading fun!
A clean, fun book for anyone who can read at the middle grade level or higher. No profanity or sexual content that I recall--just boys parading around in their briefs! A great fall, back-to-school read!

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in North America and affects as many as 15 million people. Getting old and going blind is not your only option! What most eye doctors are telling their patients is that there is no treatment for this disease... and that simply isn\'t true.

Simple and Clear Insight.......2002-12-03
Dr. Paul's latest book is perfect. For those who suffer with Macular Degeneration, or those who are concerned about eyesight, this book is a miracle. It will give you insight into not only the potential cures, but also how other methods can save your vision, all non-surgically! It is a must read.
Basics for the professional and layman alike.......2002-11-20
I have read Dr. Paul's latest book. I must say that he has made a very complicated, poorly understood malady very understandable. His treatment of the basic description of macular degeneration is excellent, and his explanations of the treatments of macular degeneration are very interesting and thought provoking. As a medical professional, I must say that the book has really increased my knowledge in this area. I feel strongly that anyone will benefit from his effort, and I highly recommend this to all. It is a must for anyone suffering from macular degeneration.

A neurology success account.......2005-04-24
This book is written as though you are a medical resident (without knowing technical terms) and being introduced to patients during rounds. Klawans leads you gently through a discussion of how he makes his diagnosis and what the key the symptoms are in a most fascinating way. When you read him you wish he were your physician. This book appeals both to those who have a background in medicine and those who do not. I have some backgroun, my husband has none and we both found it interesting enough to order all of Klawans' other books after reading it.
Inspiring and thought provoking!.......2000-04-06
It is an excellent book that illustrates the exciting field of clinical neurology very well! You will find yourself trying to diagnose the patients yourself and be amazed by the suave approach Dr. Klawans handles each case. An appreciation for the title will follow only if you read the entire book, which is very easy because it's so very interesting.
Good Neurological Sleuthing.......1998-10-12
Toscanini's Fumble is a book of a dozen and a half case histories coming from the files of an eminent American neurologist, Harold Klawans. They are written in layman's language, with difficult words and concepts defined and explained. Even so, those in the medical field will find the stories far from juvenile and quite rich in detail, spiced with references to Klawans' favorite baseball players and musicians. Included in the collection are interesting historical vignettes, including one about the 3rd century Roman emperor Maximinus I. The title of the book comes from the chapter devoted to the neurological condition that caused famous symphony conductor Arturo Toscanini to drop his baton while leading the NBC Symphany Orchestra during a performance of Wagner in 1954. (He was never to conduct again.) I give this book a 9 on a 10 point scale. It was enjoyable reading and easy to follow.

Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament: Introducing the Conceptual World of the Hebrew Bible
ASIN: 1841272582 |
Book Description
This unusually comprehensive textbook represents the most recent approaches to the biblical world by surveying Palestine's social, political, economic, religious and ecological changes from Palaeolithic to Roman eras. Designed for beginners with little knowledge of the ancient world, and with copious illustrations and charts, it explains how and why academic study of the past is undertaken, as well as the differences between historical and theological scholarship and the differences between ancient and modern genres of history writing. Classroom tested chapters emphasize the authenticity of the Bible as a product of an ancient culture, and the many problems with the biblical narrative as a historical source. Neither "maximalist" nor "minimalist'" it is sufficiently general to avoid confusion and to allow the assignment of supplementary readings such as biblical narratives and ancient Near Eastern texts.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Handy Introduction.......2005-04-17
Noll's book, Canaan and Israel in Antiquity, is a very concise, yet thorough introduction to the field of syro-palestinian archaeology. He assumes that the reader has had enough background study in history to grapple with the controversial nature of the field, and so presents point by point argumentation of all sided and viewpoints on every issue. His study proceeds chronologically, beginning with the paleolithic period (+18000 BCE) and ending with a survey of Israel at the dawn of the Hellenistic age. I recommend this work to anyone who wants a thorough and erudite introduction to the field. The author is admittedly writing from the humanistic prospective and often takes positions that go against the Biblical narrative. Yet, he does a good job of not trying to force these conclusions down ones throat and takes pains to present the evidence on all sides with respectful objectivity. Highly recommended.

Book Description
With the hundredth anniversary of the Wright Brothers' history-making flight at Kitty Hawk, world attention is once again turning to these intrepid American inventors. Written by two of the world's leading experts on the Wrights, The Wright Brothers and the Invention of the Aerial Age will provide a definitive, richly illustrated look at the lives of the brothers and their world-changing invention.
Wilbur and Orville were two eccentric owners of a bicycle shop in the heartland. But it was invention, engineering, and the new possibilities of manned flight that obsessed them. In just three years, they went from designing and flying a glider and creating a test wind tunnel to Wilbur's history-making moments in December 1903 above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In moving prose, Crouch and Jakab explain the Wrights' achievements and the moments of their great successes, and they paint a masterful personal portrait of the two sometimes erratic, genius personalities (never married, the brothers lived together all their lives), and, most important, the world of pioneering aviation in which they operated.
Poignant archival photographs throughout the book capture that world, where ox carts and airplanes co-existed and where two determined brothers from Dayton were celebrated by presidents and kings. But the most poignant of all the images remains that of an airplane, almost kite-like in its simplicity, struggling skyward from the dunes at Kitty Hawk.
Customer Reviews:
How history gives birth to a new age?.......2006-07-27
Discount the "genius" factor, the elder brother, Wilbur Wright, argued. It was an aggregation of peculiar circumstances that led the two brothers to succeed where many predecessors had failed. The author describes those peculiar circumstances in lengthy details that could be summed up as follows:
1- The religious, rigid, uncompromising father of two sons and a daughter had passed to them his character of steadfastness and distrust in the world around them. That isolated them from others. Their introversion contributed to their dedication to hard work. Hard work led to learning of new skills. Their introverted sister stayed unmarried until 52. Her income and strong dedication to her family supported the odd and bizarre experimentation of her two brothers. The feud of their father with the church led them to move and the two brothers failed to graduate from high school. Thus, they faced more hard work and despair.
2- Starting a new business in printing local newspapers helped them in two ways. They followed the scientific progress of previous flight efforts by the German and French and mastered new mechanical skills on how to make machines work. A friend of the Wrights sneaks under a printer to figure out how it does the printing despite its mute existence, to no avail. The Wrights entrusted machines to do impossible tasks that defy common sense.
3- Their failure in the printing business got them into the bicycle business. Here, they refined their mechanical skill further but learned a pivotal key to their future success. That is: control. Bicycles are the most complex machines that man has invented since they depend on the instinct of brain control in order to maintain equilibrium (balance). That control factor will give birth to the new age of flight.
4- Their literary knowledge gained from printing, mechanical craftsmanship gained from designing bicycles and fixing printers, had coincided with the role of the Smithsonian Institute and a childhood's toy of a helicopter brought to them by their father. The death of a famous German glider few years earlier induced them to approach the Smithsonian Institute for information on flight machines.
5- Living in rural Ohio in 1900 afforded them the space and time to aspire for a new dream to fame and wealth. The vast landscape and observation of nature sustained their curiosity and hope for attaining fame. They rose above their neighbors with their noisy and huge boxy flight machines, while their father had failed to rise above his adversaries in the local church.
6- What set them different from others was the common sense of lay persons. The three dominant steps for attempting flying at those days were: obtaining power for propulsion using heavy steam engines, starting with small models of manned machines, and gliding. The Wright's common sense of mastering "control" first of all stemmed from their bicycle experience.
7- They started with unmanned kites, worked on their aeronautic control and equilibrium when airborne, then manned the controllable glider, and finally added power to it. Progressively, they pushed for distance, airborne time, and altitude, until gained confidence in their ability to control take off, balance, and landing. Their contribution to the flight is founded on their demonstration that control of an airborne, heavier than air flying machine was within reach. (Haven't birds mastered that principle for millenniums?)
8- In 1908, they were transformed from destitute common people into world figures welcomed by the monarchs of Italy, Britain, Spain, and Germany. In a photograph prior to flying over the Governor's Island in New York, Wilbur looked miserably depressed while three New York Policemen watched him gambling with his life. He realized the perils of being alone in a new age. With a suit, tie, and soft hat, approaching the age of 40, conquering the air alone with no substantial gain, frightened the elder brother. Yet, he died from typhoid fever shortly afterwards. He always felt that success and happiness had passed him by since his early years. In a Carnival to honor their achievement, Wilbur felt being used for advertisement gimmicks for the city. His depression stood in his way to rejoice his historic accomplishment.
9- Their rigid upbringing, though aided them battle the painstaking experimentation with aeronautics; it hampered their ability to excel in the world of businessmen. Their patent did not offer them secure, affluent living and the fast pace technology had surpassed them sooner than they expected. They were born to serve the history and the only reward they got was honor. They lived and died in their father's home, unmarried to the end.
