Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's A Guy Thing.......2007-09-23

I loved this book with its short little chapters covering specific things that guys just do and many women just don't get. It's a must read for any gal who seems to think her man should act or react like her girlfriends or is just plain baffled by male behavior. David Deida is genius in presenting the differences between the male and female psyche. Another recommendation for women would be to read Dear Lover: A Woman's Guide To Men, Sex, And Love's Deepest Blissalso by David Deida and The Way Of The Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Woman, Work, and Sexual Desireshould be required reading for all men!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on understanding the sexes.......2007-08-23

I've been involved in self awareness work for 29 years. The relief I find by understanding Divine Masculine and Feminine energies is tremendous. It has given me the clarity to know what serves me best in intimate relationship, how I can best serve my partner, and how we can keep passion and love alive. I wish this book was given to every girl when she turned 16 as a "rite of passage" tool. As a Holistic Energy Healer, I use these teachings with clients to help them through crisis and gain a deeper understanding of their own true nature. This book is laid out in bite sized chunks of info that are easy to assimilate and refer to. It is a great on its own, or as an introduction to David Deida's other books.

5 out of 5 stars Men, Demystified.......2007-08-14

This guy knows what it means to be a man, and he puts that into words better than anyone else I've ever heard or read. This book is a must-have for any and every woman who is confused about her man. If you read this book, you will understand what makes men tick.

4 out of 5 stars mars and venus takes a spiritual step.......2006-07-17

I've read Deida's "The way of the Superior Man" as well as "Dear Lover" and am a bit biased at this point as I think his work is helpful within a larger understanding of how men and women typically behave (read Men are from Mars Women are from Venus first), but can come across as extreme at times (more in "dear lover" than this book or "superior man") Overall, Deida's work has been helpful for me. I've explored Deida's ideas and advice with my Man over tha past several months, and find it is usually helpful, but I think much of it would have been hard for me to swallow/potentially damaging if I hadn't read other books on male/female behaviour first. Use your judgement and filter the more perverse aspects of Deida's philosophy against the larger picture of your ethics and use what is helpful to you, discard the rest.

3 out of 5 stars guy thing.......2006-03-19

This book was helpful for understanding guy logic. I learned alot and found it informative. However, the book also tends to be repetitive and could have been edited more stringently.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it for the illustrations alone.......2007-09-06

This is a Rowan-published book, so naturally all the patterns call for Rowan yarn, primarily Cashsoft DK and Cashsoft Baby DK. I like Rowan yarns, so that's no big deal, but I didn't see anything to suggest they couldn't easily be substituted for something else. The intro says, "These 24 projects should make bedtime fun for any two- to five-year-old child!" and I expect that's true. There are blankets, toys (plus accessories!), bathrobes, slippers and bed socks, cardigans, tanks, vests, and hot water bottle covers all aimed at the pre-school crowd. The book contains no how-to section except for a short appendix of tips at the end. The appendix will be a must for me, as about 20 of the 24 designs use intarsia, crochet, embroidery, or some combination of the three. This is not a collection for those who don't have and aren't willing to learn these skills. What makes this book truly amazing, though, are the illustrations. I'm just in love with them. Instead of using models, each item is photographed and inserted into a hand-drawn illustration (e.g., the cover--the bathrobe, slippers, and doll are all actual handknits; the little girl is strictly two-dimensional.). The book is worth the price of admission for the pictures alone.

Queue-worthy: 4 toys and accessories, 2 cardigans, 2 pairs of bed socks, a tank, etc. I'm not into blankets, but pretty much everything else.

Why bother?: the hot water bottle covers. What is this, Victorian London? They're cute, but not useful for 21st-century America. Viva la central heating!

Conclusion: A winner, even if I never knit a thing out of it.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT! DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200............2007-02-08

Unlike so many other knitting books for babies and kids, this has creative, attractive patterns. No ugly pastels, no useless cutsie booties, no hideous hats, nothing that will embarrass the poor child in 15 years. None of that garbage. I make the stuffed toys and they are universally a hit. Buy this and Handknits for Kids. You will wear them out with use.

4 out of 5 stars Cutest thing!.......2007-01-03

AND SO TO BED... takes the theme of bedtime and provides handknits for girls and boys ages 2-5 in this sequel to HANDKNITS FOR KIDS. Full-page patterns and easy directions assume prior knitting experience and provide fun socks, a bathrobe for boys, toys, and more for this age range. Colorful photos throughout insure interest and polished results.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite knitting book!.......2006-08-29

I have been wanting to knit bed time items for a long time. When I first heard about this book I knew I had to have it. The design and the beautiful pictures make it my very favorite knitting book to look at. I am almost done knitting the bathrobe in the cover. I love the fact that the items are so easy to make and yet very pretty. I want to make almost everything in this book. The main yarn used is ROWAN Cashsoft which is a little pricy but worth your money. Cashsoft is truly the softest yarn I have work with and it is very elastic and cosy. My only two suggestions for this book are: 1- Sizes go up to 5 years old (I wish it went up to 8 years old) I had to modify the pattern to create a bigger size for my daugther. And 2- This book does not have schematics. I can't believe they missed that. Nowadays, this is almost a requirement in all knitting patterns.
Besides that, I LOVE IT!, my daugther and I love to look at it in bed before going to sleep. We love to make up stories based on the beautiful pictures...
For the next edition; add little stories to it, schematics and bigger sizes, and this will be the most wonderful children knitting book ever!

5 out of 5 stars Every guy must own this book!!.......2006-06-14

I bought this book and it really is a "must-own" for all single guys. It's full of great ideas, from travel to sports to parties. But the best parts are the personal stories of real guys who have done hilarious things on the list. I want to meet those guys...buy it now and start checking off your own list.

5 out of 5 stars Has Oprah put it on her list yet?.......2006-06-13

Very funny book. Full of great ideas and ways to live life to its fullest. My favorite quote so far is from the Running of the Bulls: "Don't be afraid to tell (the ladies) how you are the #1 bull fighter in the state of Rhode Island." Great stuff... should be given to every guy on his 18th birthday.

4 out of 5 stars My Official NEW Bathroom Book.......2006-06-02

And that's a high honor. Picked it up the other day. Full of great Ideas. From places to travel to festivals to my favorite (and I am going to organize this) the Big Wheel Pub Crawl. Awesome stuff. Definitely gave me some things to try and accomplish... like 499 of them.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a guy's book . . . .......2006-05-29

My boyfriend bought this book so I decided to check it out to see what kinds of things he "had to do" before it was too late. While this is definitely not written to appeal to me (the girlfriend) I found some of it quite funny. I could also see why it would appeal to my boyfriend and his friends. While I certainly hope he doesn't try everything outlined in the book (if he still wants to be my boyfriend) I think he would have a great time doing a lot of the stuff mentioned in it. I don't think I would ever buy this book for him but I would think about getting it for some of my single guy friends.

5 out of 5 stars Even If you think you've done it all..........2006-05-20

This book is a phenomenal collection of stories that every guy (who considers himself so) can enjoy. Between the "I think I did that" and "Why havent I thought of that" comments, you'll find a down to earth manual that will keep you laughing as you reminisce over good times. My favorite part was the idea about crashing a wedding you've actually been invited to and becoming "that guy" ~ can't wait to try that one out! ;)

Book Description

Journalist Steven Bereznai — presentable, accomplished, well educated, successful, and in his early 30s — has never had a boyfriend. “Is Singlesville my final destination?” Bereznai wonders. Or does a partner await? And what does he really want? To pair up, or to maintain the independence of a single life? Now in Gay and Single . . . Forever?, Bereznai investigates the basic question of whether there can be acceptance for him and other single gay men—as single men—where the push to partner with a man has replaced the pressure to marry a woman.
Bringing together a perfect mix of personal narrative, historical research, interviews with dozens of gay men — including Andrew Holleran, Michael Bronski, and Wayson Choy — and intensely penetrating social and psychological insight, Gay and Single . . . Forever? will resonate deeply among gay men —many of whom, even today, spend most of their lives not in a relationship.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not a practical book for the single guy.......2007-07-26

Sorry, this book wasn't for me. I gave it a chance, but its language just didn't reach out to me. But mostly, it just wasn't practical enough for me. There were interesting stories shared, like the one where the "friends with benefits" guy actually steps up and helps the author paint in a moment of crisis. Don't get me wrong, that was really sweet. There were a few moments like that.

But I'm newly single and trying to figure out how to date, and this didn't help me do that. I was looking for bulleted lists. Checklists. Nuts and bolts. Succinct and discrete steps. I didn't get that.

4 out of 5 stars LOOKING FOR LOVE....or not.......2007-01-27

Bereznai, Steven, Gay and Single...Forever?: 10 Things Every Gay Guy Looking for Love (and Not Finding It) Needs to Know. Avalon 2006

Wow!!!!!!! That is a title for you. Here in this original, quite brave and easily arguable book comes a formula on what and what not to do about being single. The thesis concerns whether it is better to be single or not. It seems that since we became "liberated" after Sonewall, after the marches on Washington and after the multitude of changes in attitudes toward us, that gay men are opting to be, shall we say, unattached. Yet, on the other hand, there is a great deal being said about being partnered. Bereznai examines the issues of whether there is room for a single gay guy in today's modern society. He does this by interviews with gay men, through personal revelations and with detailed commentary based on both psychological and social thought. He wrote this book for us, and especially for the man who wants to stay single.

Berenzai starts off by telling us that the talk of gay marriage and being partnered, which has been such a hot topic of conversation, is "whimsy" as long as there are so many more important issues facing us. Yet essentially the struggle today is for equality--the enemy has not changed--it is still hate and fear. In other words, it is the same old war, just the battles are different.

This book is the result of a search for intimacy at a time when "gay singles are the new pariahs". (Interesting thought). Bereznai uses his own state of perpetual singledom as he sets out to explain his work. And what he has discovered while being single releases his thoughts about the needs of gay men and thereby gives a chronology of the shifting of relationships and how this has affected the cultural and political life of the entire gay community. His writing is heartfelt and witty at the same time. Although he writes from the heart, he doesn't ignore the mind or the other parts of the body. His remarks are "right on", sometimes so true that they hurt. This is a book for all those who live without love but want it very badly. There are times that I felt I was reading Carrie Bradshaw's column. One critic has called this book the "new gay bible". It certainly will help you understand why you never brought the lucky guy home to meet the folks.

Allow me to share some of the chapter titles with you. We start off with "Gay is good--being gay and single used to be, too". How about "Husbands and boyfriends don't guarantee happiness" and "Boyfriends can be like prostitutes---Prostitutes can be like boyfriends". And then there is my favorite, "Wanting to be with someone is natural....not wanting to stay with him is, too" Paul Rudnick, the gay playwright is quoted on the back cover, "Being gay and single is the new smoking. It won't be socially acceptable anymore, and you will have to go outside." That pretty well sums the book up.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-11-15

This book gave me a new perspective on life. Being gay and single most of my adult life I felt a sense of guilt when not in a relationship. Bereznai analyzes some of the reasons why westernized culture puts pressure on everyone, including gay men, to be a couple. His writing is both funny, intelligent and inspiring. I highly recommend this book to any gay man that is having guilt over not being in a relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A book that tells it like it is........2006-10-28

When I first started reading 'Gay and Single....Forever?' I wanted others to read it. I then thought that my coupled friends wouldn't understand it so why tell them about it. When I finished it I wanted to give a copy to all my friends that are in a string of never ending long term relationships and say, "you want to know what it is like being me? - read this book!"

Steven Bereznai touched upon so many things that you don't talk about with your coupled friends so you think that you are the only one experiencing them. He has so many of the same memories and experiences that I myself have had, it was uncanny at times. I have read other books about Cultures of Desire and Male Couple guides, and many had some interesting points, but I related to this book from start to finish. It was very hard to put down.

As I began reading, I found there were many things I wanted to highlight, as I do when I am reading a book or article for work, but I felt that it would be absurd to use a yellow highlighter on a book I was reading for pleasure. I decided to just turn down the corner edge on a page where I read a phrase of interest. By the end, I had marked so many pages, because there was a phrase or paragraph that hit home, that half the corners of the book are now turned down.

There should be discussion groups set-up to discuss this book and I'd be the first to sign-up.

What a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough!.......2006-10-07

This book is one of the most thorough works of the existing literature around on gay men and relationships. The author has done an excellent job researching romantic love and the love lives of gay men and why so many are still single. Without pathologizing single gay men or the gay male community he presents a balanced and objective viewpoint of why so many gay men stay single. Hopefully this will end any shame single gay men might feel and take on all the blame!

5 out of 5 stars NECESSARY GUIDE FOR PRE-TEEN BOYS.......2005-10-02

Bill Zimmerman, the author, was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his writings for young people about current events and issues they face. He is former editor of Newsday, the nation's largest newspaper, and author of over a dozen books. 100 Things Guys Need To Know is an EXCELLENT cartoon styled book for pre-adolescent and adolescent boys to help them cope with the changes in their bodies, emotions, and relationships in a positive way. Nothing is more important than helping a youth know that making wise choices amidst peer pressure and internal quandaries is a good thing. This book is the perfect tool to help any boy (ages 9 - 13) thrive in his teen years and understand what is happening to himself internally and physically as well as socially. The book teaches good skills and positive choices and healthy habits in six categories: Self, Body and Mind, Family, School, Relationships, Future. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It is written to the youngster himself and is easy enough to understand, and the cartoons help the boy identify with situations common to every teen. The book is also an excellent one to read with your children to open conversation about issues you may not know he is dealing with at school or other areas of his life. A WONDERFUL book to give any boy you know, love, and want to make wise choices in order to navigate the turbulent teen years successfully and create a happy, future for himself. Book Description

When most people think of word processing, they think of Microsoft Word. After all, it has been around for more than 20 years-practically an eternity in computer time. But Word has also provided its users-nearly everyone on the face of the planet-with an endless supply of annoyances. That is, until now. Word Annoyances offers to the point (and often opinionated) solutions to your most vexing editing, formatting, printing, faxing, and scanning problems. It covers everything from installation and templates to tables, columns, and graphics. For example, learn how to stop Word from searching the Web for help, and how to enter the same text easily in multiple parts of a document-and keep it updated automatically. It also provides a gentle introduction to the power of macros so you can slay your annoyances by the truckload. The fixes will work with most versions of Word, including Word 2000, Word 2002 (also known as Word XP), and Word 2003. Among the topics covered: About the Author Guy Hart-Davis has been using Microsoft Word for more than 15 years, during which time he has seen its capabilities increase steadily and its annoyances increase exponentially. His other books include Word 2000 Developer's Handbook (Sybex) and How to Do Everything with Your iPod and iPod mini (McGraw-Hill). In this book he shares secrets that will quell calm your colleagues, impress your friends, and confound your enemies.

4 out of 5 stars Word Annoyances - Writers, Get This Book!.......2006-02-16

If you've ever said-even under your breath-"I hate Word," you'll like this book.

The book has answers for dozens of the little aggravations that Word visits upon you. It solves things you thought you just had to live with (though you knew you'd never forgive the programmers at Microsoft who made them this way).

The author writes in an engaging question- ("The Annoyance" by you) and-answer ("The Fix" by him) style that's friendly and yet precise. I would have liked it to be a bit less wordy, but it's okay because the directions are very clear and even, in many cases, contain version-specific instructions for Word 2000, 2003, XP and so on. He also sprinkles the text with occasional helpful tips in little text boxes.

Lots of documents you open frequently? The author shows you how to add a Work menu that will keep up to 9 documents readily available (p. 16). Hate it when Word won't let you put a .jpg or .gif in a document? You can change an option in the Office Setup Wizard. Want to unclutter your menus? Learn how to customize which commands show up.

Boy, this one really annoys me-how about you? Sometimes when I close Word, it asks me if I want to save the changes to Normal.dot. Now, I happen to know that Normal.dot is the default template for new documents. But I don't remember making changes to it! Why is this happening?
To kill this seemingly random prompt, choose Tools -> Options, click Save tab and uncheck "Prompt to save Normal template" box (pp. 9, 14). But it might still happen to you for other reasons-the only solution they say is to quit Word and restart Windows. Sigh.
That #$%^&@# Task Pane

This one I was paying my tech guru to fix for me-but he couldn't find the "next step." I gave up worrying about it but continued wasting time (and putting extra stress on my mouse hand) having to manually close the "new document" task pane that pops up-and stays up-on my screen, hogging valuable screen space. We'd both found the place to supposedly turn this off (Tools -> Options, click the View tab, uncheck the Startup Task Pane box in the Show area, click OK) but, as the author says, it just wouldn't obey! So I'm going to give you this whole fix in case that stupid pane annoys you, too.
If the task pane doesn't obey on your first effort, close Word and create a system restore point. Don't be afraid-this isn't as scary as it sounds. Choose Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore, click the "Create a restore point" option, click the Next button and follow the prompts.Next, choose Start -> Run, type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following Registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\General (in some versions it may read "...\Office\10.0\..."). Then, right-click the DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane key, choose Delete from the shortcut menu and click OK to confirm. Choose File -> Exit to close the Registry Editor. Restart Word and you're done. This works like a charm, and I'm thoroughly delighted.

Template magic

Here's a really good tip if your work involves creating many documents of certain basic types, or if you work with others who have to create documents for you that use specific styles. Too bad I didn't read this one before that last big project-I spent hours manually correcting all the headings and fonts in the other writers' drafts because they didn't know how to use styles!

To create a template for each type of document you need, choose File -> New and in that task pane on the right that we mentioned earlier, click either "On my computer" (Word 2003) or "General templates" (Word XP). Up comes the Templates dialog box. (In Word 2000, choose File -> New to get there.)

Highlight an existing template, click Template at the bottom, and click OK. Save the .dot file with a name you'll remember. Then lay out and format the document (fonts, headings, etc.) as you want all final documents to appear. You can even enter text that you want to have in all documents based on this template.

You can create AutoText and AutoCorrect entries for boilerplate text (your company info, etc.) that doesn't specifically belong in any template. Save the changes to the template and then close it. To create a new document based on the template, open the Templates or New dialog box, select the template and click OK.

To create a template from an existing document, choose File -> Save As, select Document Template in the "Save as type" drop-down list, specify the name and click the Save button. Templates and documents look pretty much the same except for the file extension.
File gigantic?

Ever had your file be too big to send by email-even after you've deleted everything but a paragraph? That's enough to make you crazy. The author goes into a long-drawn-out explanation of why this happens-get the book if you want to read it. Otherwise, just turn off the culprit (fast saving). Choose Tools -> Options, click the Save tab and uncheck the "Allow fast saves" box.

Got a bunch of documents open and want to save them all? Shift-click the File menu and click Save All. Then, to close them shift-click File and click Close All. Easier yet (as you may already have discovered from having to shut down because Word just hangs there), just close Word and it saves and closes all your documents for you.

Home document security

Ever notice in Windows Explorer that someone else originated one of your documents? Maybe you asked your friend to help you draft something. If you want to be sure the other person's name doesn't appear when you move your cursor over that document in Explorer, remove the personal data (metadata) from the document.

Choose File -> Properties and manually delete what you want. In Word 2003/XP, choose Tools -> Options, click the Security tab and check the "Remove personal information from file properties on save" box. Then, save the document to preserve your changes.
HTML malfunctions

Writing HTML pages in Word? First piece of advice, don't-if you can help it. Word's HTML code is so wordy and clunky that your page will take longer to load and, heaven help you if you want to make changes outside Word. You'll be trying to change a font and end up with some of the strangest behaviors.

If you must use Word for HTML, save as "Web Page, Filtered" for pages you want to put on your web site. That cuts out a small amount of the messy code, but not much.
Potpourri of pleasantries

Want to stop those ridiculous "Shall we report this error to Microsoft" prompts? Who crammed all that useless code in there anyway? Just turn it off. You'll find out how on p. 30.

I don't know about you, but sometimes when I'm pasting from the web the formatting is way off, even if I should accidentally remember to use Paste Special. The author tells us how to fix this-sort of. Choosing Edit -> Paste Special and selecting the "Unformatted text" option should give you plain text. If not, paste the text into Notepad first, then copy it and paste it into Word.

Ever get something someone copied from an email and it's full of spaces or >> signs at the beginning of each paragraph with a first-line indent? I knew this, but it's a good tip to share with you in case you don't.

Use Find and Replace. In a later fix he tells you all the symbols to indicate formatting in this dialog box. Replace ^p (paragraph mark) and four spaces with ^p and a distinctive string - for example, ^pfirstlineindent. Then replace firstlineindent with nothing but the paragraph formatting that you need: delete the contents of the "Replace with" box, choose Paragraph in the Format drop-down list, specify the indentation level, click OK and click Replace All. (Alternatively, once you've deleted the whitespace, you can use a style to apply a first-line indent to all of the paragraphs.
Learn how to reformat WordPerfect documents on pp. 32, 78.

Here's a big question for most of us I bet: How do I correct automatic numbering in numbered lists? You know you're not going to be happy with the answer when a guy starts his response with "Bad news" and it's four pages long (pp. 80 to 84).

Do you ever get aggravated that when you're selecting text with the mouse, it keeps grabbing more than you want? The author says this is Word's smart-selection feature.

Choose Tools -> Options, click the Edit tab and see whether "When selecting, automatically select entire word" and "Use smart paragraph selection" boxes are checked. If so, try unchecking them and see if you prefer the resulting selection behavior.
Do you have to count your words sometimes? I like this one: Instead of using Tools -> Word Count each time, do this: Display the Word Count toolbar; go to View -> Toolbars or right-click any displayed toolbar and click the Word Count item. To force a recount, press Alt + C or click the Recount button.

Sometimes have to type web or email addresses and don't want the auto-hyperlink? Read all about it on p. 94.

I've never been good at using Compare and Merge Documents-like when someone else has made changes and you want to see where they are. Here's a cool tip for comparing multiple versions:

Open the original version and choose Tools -> Compare and Merge Documents. In the Compare and Merge Documents dialog box, select the first of the other versions of the document, click the drop-down arrow on the Merge button, and choose "Merge into Current Document." Word merges the documents and marks the changes with revision marks. If the results look okay, repeat the procedure with the next version, etc.
Hate how Word's columns act when you need to change the width of one of them? Try clicking Shift as you drag it. This makes Word keep the columns to the right the same, but it does mean that your table's overall width will change.

How do I convert a long list of names or other data that are separated with regular old spaces instead of tabs? He says it's easy.

Choose Edit -> Replace and replace ^w (whitespace) with ^t (a tab). Select the list, choose Table -> Convert -> Text to Table, make sure the Tabs option is selected and that the "Number of columns" box shows the right number of columns, and click the OK button to perform the conversion.
All told, I'd say get this book if you experience periodic aggravations with Word. Don't try to go through the whole thing. The index is pretty good, so just keep it next to your computer.

5 out of 5 stars Word works when you know how to fix it.......2005-09-17

When it comes to word processing programs Word is so predominant in the marketplace as to be ubiquitous. Unfortunately just because it is everywhere doesn't mean that there are not a lot of problems with it. Learning how to deal with all those annoying problems is the purpose of this book. The author covers installation problems, dealing with multiple versions, moving Word to another computer, dealing with long startup times, when it runs slowly, when it takes a long time to close, modifying the toolbar, saving all open documents at once, keeping separate versions of the same document, dealing with crashes and document corruption, transferring your auto-correct entries to another computer, the myriad problems of working with styles and layouts, printing problems (and there are many of these), mail merge, and even dealing with problems specific to the Mac OS.

Written in a question and answer format it contains all the most commonly asked questions about how to get Word to work the way you want. I've worked with Word for years and still found a couple of tips in this book that I really appreciated. If you use Word for anything other than an expanded notepad you will want a copy of Word Annoyances.

5 out of 5 stars Word Annoyances.......2005-09-08

This book is a guide to making Word work your way. Users are advised on how to get rid of Word's greatest annoyances, such creating hyperlinks the user doesn't want, and how to turn off automatic paragraph numbering, among others. It provides solutions to common and unusual problems in editing, formatting, printing, faxing, and scanning. There are hundreds of customizations, fixes, workarounds, and instructions which show you how to make Word work your way. You can save a lot of time by using the advice in this book.

5 out of 5 stars So *that's* how you fix that!.......2005-09-04

Because I spend most of my time programming and not writing reports and such in Word, I just figure that certain quirks of Word existed because I was too dumb to know better. While that may still be the case, I now have a way to make my Word time more productive and less annoying... Word Annoyances by Guy Hart-Davis. This is a *really* good book for anyone who uses Word (although Microsoft may tend to disagree)...

Contents: Installation, Repair, and Configuration; Creating and Saving Documents; Text Entry and Editing; Formatting and Layout; Forms, Revising, Proofing, and Finalizing; Printing, Faxing, and Scanning; Tables, Columns, and Text Boxes; Automate Annoyances Away with Macros; OLE, Mail Merge, and Office Applications; Mac Word Annoyances; Index

If you've never had the pleasure of reading an Annoyances book before, here's how it works. The author gathers up a large number of questions and "annoyances" from regular users of the product. Then in an irreverent question and answer format, he (or she) proceeds to show solutions and workarounds to allow the reader to bypass those irritations. Since this book deals with Word, you'll learn all sorts of interesting stuff on how to "fix" auto-formatting, how to change your default template, and dozens of other gems that will quickly make this one of your favorite Office books (much to Microsoft's chagrin). I'm sure they'd like you to believe that their software doesn't have any annoying features, and that everything is very helpful and well-implemented. Not! Even things that I didn't give a second thought to before now stand out as things I don't have to live with.

Obviously, not every tip in this book will apply to your needs or situations. You'll either never use a particular feature, or you've already figured out how to fix the behavior. But there are far more instances where you'll say "so *that's* how you get rid of that!". So get a copy of this book, sit down in front of your computer, open up Word, and start reading. The "Eureka!" moments will start coming fast and furious...

5 out of 5 stars ARE YOU ANNOYED WITH WORD?.......2005-08-21

Does Word annoy you? If it does, buy this book? Why you ask? Because, author Guy Hart-Davis has done an outstanding job of making Word less annoying in this book.

Hart-Davis begins by prompting you to prevent Word from demanding the installation CD, or installing multiple versions of Word on the same PC. Next, the author exploits the power of templates to minimize the annoyances of creating and saving documents at home or at work. Then, he deals with common annoyances in Word's views. The author continues by getting the mysterious "Normal template" under control and changing its settings. In addition, the author next shows you how to prevent users from accessing certain parts of a document, by forcing them to fill in the rest with suitable data. He also shows you how to deal with printing annoyances, add faxing capabilities to Word, and scan hardcopy text and graphics into your documents. The author next shows you how to make a table appear at the start page, and how to get a table away from the start of a document when it's stuck there. Next, the author shows you how to record macros, edit them, and write them from scratch, with examples of specific VBA-quashable annoyances and generic approaches that you can turn on your own annoyances. Then, he shows you how to minimize annoyances with object linking and embedding (OLE). Finally, he shows you how to deal with crashes and performance annoyances on the MAC.

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of focusing on Word for Windows; because, that's what most of you are using. At the end of the day, you'll see hundreds of concentrated annoyances with solutions that will calm your colleagues, impress your friends, and confound your enemies.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend.......2007-05-17

Reviewed by Richard Blake for Reader Views (5/07)

Dr. John King's new book, "It's a Guy Thing: Helping Guys Become Men, Husbands and Fathers," discusses the role that fathers play in the home, their role as husbands, steps to true fatherhood, how to model a good marriage for your kids, and how to become the best man, husband and father you can be.

The book takes the stance that in our society the absence of fathers in the home has become an epidemic. King believes that, in order to solve this problem, men must break the cycle and reevaluate their roles as men, husbands, and fathers. This epidemic is having a profound effect on a boy's maturation process. Studies reveal that the absence of a father in the home contribute to a wide range of social deficiencies, behavioral disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, youth suicides, high school dropouts, and juvenile delinquency.

When there is no father figure in the home, young boys grow up without the necessary guidelines for becoming well adjusted husbands, fathers, and responsible members of society.

John's insights touch the heart of a man and challenge him to be his best. An example: "Your kids will model what you teach them. They're sponges. Be aware that you're teaching them all the time! I can tell my kids to respect people, but what really teaches them respect is seeing me put those words into action by respecting people."

King communicates what it means to be a man of God, that men have a high and holy calling to be Godly men. He addresses key issues and foundational truths for becoming a man of God.

King speaks from lessons he learned through his own experiences as husband and father. John writes man to man in an easy-to-read style. The format of short chapters addressing a specific focus on important topics in each chapter makes this a book to be treasured to read again and again. The importance of this life changing book will make it a "redi-reference" for future review.

I strongly recommend "It's a Guy Thing" as an equipping tool for pastors, counselors, dads, and husbands. The message is timely, relevant, and important with timeless answers for those "Frequently Asked Questions" men are asking in today's society. This is a guidebook, a manual, for men of all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Strengths, weaknesses, and underlying worldview.......2007-05-07

What is it: This is a guide to help men understand their importance in the family unit, how they can be very influential on their children, what they can do, and what they should not do.

It starts out by giving the statistics on the difficulties often experienced by children who grow up without a father actively involved in their lives. These statistics, including juvenile delinquency rates, substance abuse, and teen-age pregnancy, are sadly impressive. However, the reader might note the beginning of a trend that runs throughout this book, as the statistics show the negative outcome on children of growing up in single-parent (mother-only) homes, but do not even mention the less common situation of the single-parent (father-only) home.

From this point on, the book is a series of very short chapters, almost like an enhanced version of a thought-for-the-day calendar, that describe the many ways that men can be powerful and positive influences on their families.

What I liked: There are many good ideas here. A few of my favorites include the idea that the specific activity is not crucial, as long as the father is actively involved and giving his attention. Quantity of time spent is as important as quality.

Another good point is that a good father must not just "talk the talk" but must also model the values and beliefs he espouses. A child will better learn good behavior by seeing his or her parent modeling that behavior, than he or she will learn it by having it delivered in lecture format. One key thing a good father can model is how men should treat women. No matter how many good things a man says about behaving toward women, it will be useless for the children if they see their father mistreat and disrespect their mother. Conversely, if a boy grows up seeing his father respect, be faithful to, be courteous to, and clearly love his (the boy's) mother, he will have a good model to follow. And, if a girl grows up seeing her father treat her mother well, she is more likely to set high standards for the boys she dates.

What I did not care for: When the author discusses the quantity-time versus quality-time issues, throughout the book, the statements end up being somewhat contradictory. At times, Mr. King talks about "quality time" being highly over-rated, and that plenty of time (i.e., quantity), spent by fathers with their children, is what is really important. But, he then gives many ideas on what to do during this time, and those ideas move the reader straight into what I would call "quality time" (i.e., undivided attention, focusing on mutually-enjoyed activities or learning about the child's views and interests).

The author also holds a strong bias toward patriarchy, that the father is the leader of the family. Mr. King even states that a family must have one person at the head, as any entity with two heads is a monster. While Mr. King makes it clear that he likes, loves, trusts, and respects his wife, he still emphasizes that the father is the head of the family, and the family's success is most strongly determined by the quality of fathering provided.

Mr. King also ignores the fact that almost all the advice he gives could apply to women, as mothers, as well as it applies to men as fathers.

Mr. King has a section wherein he states, as established fact, that mothers provide their children with a sense of security, whereas fathers provide their children with their sense of identity. Really? I would like to see the research on that concept. I think both parents, to the extent that each is involved, is a strong source of both security and identity for their children.

I ended up liking much of this book, while skimming over the parts that conflicted with my views and did not fit with my experience and what I have learned. Mr. King set out with as clear goal: clarify what it means to be a good man, a good husband, and a good father. Given the author's patriarchal life-view, based in his religion, he did a pretty good job of stating his ideas. Will it fit with what most people think and believe? That's iffy, and many women, and some men, will even find the father-supremacy view offensive.

Strengths: Fast, easy to read; many good ideas; emphasis on "walking the walk."

Weaknesses: Contradictions, underlying assumptions regarding male superiority.

Conclusion: This is a quick, easy-to-read guide on ways to become a good father and husband, but there are some contradictions, and a strong patriarchal slant to the book.

Recommended: Yes, but only if you share the author's views on gender roles; otherwise, you might not like it.

5 out of 5 stars This Is One Great Book!.......2007-04-20

I certainly am not be a guy and of course I'm not a dad or husband but I have to say I truly enjoyed and learned from this outstanding book by Dr. John King. Packed inside of this gem of a work is heartfelt, life learned advise for any man who truly wants to be the husband and father every wife and child deserves to have.
Dr. King takes the reader through some inside checks, touching their outlook as a dad, how their past can effect their dad-self and he begins to give some great insight into turning things around, what is important, why, and how to implement changes that will make a difference. He also gives some short but meaningful story examples that many will relate to.
I loved just about everything this book had to offer. The cover is great, the outlay is fun, the advise useful and simply to understand and actually quite simple to put into practice in your life. All in all this is a great book that I am truly proud to give my recommendation to. Men - you need to pick this one up; in my humble opinion if you read this with an open heart, ready to make a few adjustments, the advise in this book will give you a wealth of good seeds that will produce a bountiful harvest in your life and the life of your wife and children. Excellent job Dr. King!

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2002-03-29

I think this book would be great for "tweens", 9 to 12 year-old readers, because it is highly insightful. However, as a high school student, I found the book lacking in novelty. Perfect for the guy/girl perspective contrast.

5 out of 5 stars What a awesome book!.......1999-12-22

I am 13 years old and I borrowed this book from a friend of mine who got it from a christian bookshop. I think this is a very good book which really helps you with relationships and dealing with the opposite sex. This is also a very interesting book - I couldn't put it down when I started reading it! :)

This book helped me to understand the way a guy thinks when becoming a teen and also how to talk to them and maybe even start a relationship. I read this in sixth grade and think every parent should get this for their son/daughter.

Saw the authors on "Cold Pizza" and ordered a copy. Just got it and the book has a lot of useful stuff. I'm not married, so the cheating on my wife chapter won't help me, but I found the beer, wine and cigar chapters especially interesting. A good bathroom read as it's an easy book to flip through.
