Book Description

With her disarming, intimate, completely accessible voice, and dry sense of humor, Nora Ephron shares with us her ups and downs in I Feel Bad About My Neck, a candid, hilarious look at women who are getting older and dealing with the tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty nests, and life itself.

The woman who brought us When Harry Met Sally . . . , Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and Bewitched, and the author of best sellers Heartburn, Scribble Scribble, and Crazy Salad, discusses everything—from how much she hates her purse to how much time she spends attempting to stop the clock: the hair dye, the treadmill, the lotions and creams that promise to slow the aging process but never do. Oh, and she can’t stand the way her neck looks. But her dermatologist tells her there’s no quick fix for that.

Ephron chronicles her life as an obsessed cook, passionate city dweller, and hapless parent.  She recounts her anything-but-glamorous days as a White House intern during the JFK years (“I am probably the only young woman who ever worked in the Kennedy White House that the President did not make a pass at”) and shares how she fell in and out of love with Bill Clinton—from a distance, of course.  But mostly she speaks frankly and uproariously about life as a woman of a certain age.

Utterly courageous, wickedly funny, and unexpectedly moving in its truth telling, I Feel Bad About My Neck is a book of wisdom, advice, and laugh-out-loud moments, a scrumptious, irresistible treat.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great read, slightly depressing ........2007-09-25

This book was funny and easy to read for anyone over 50 , if you're any younger you wont get half the jokes . It did get a little depressing towards the end , but some may just call it realistic ( about getting old and death ) .

1 out of 5 stars Not the fun read I expected.......2007-09-25

Maybe it's just me, but I expected so much more from this book. I thought it would be wittier, more original, and use humor to inspire middle aged women like me. Instead I found it to be a negative read and it just brought me down. Sorry, no recommendation from me on this one.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2007-09-25

I really feel cheated out of several hours of time and the cost of the book. Instead of funny and insightful, it was whiny and shallow. I should have read the reviews at Amazon instead of seeing her on Oprah and thinking the bookI Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman would be worth my time and money.

4 out of 5 stars I Feel Bad About My Neck..........2007-09-25

Quick and easy read. Entertaining and insightful of how we feel but haven't put our thoughts into book form. Nora did for us.

5 out of 5 stars I Feel Bad About My Neck.......2007-09-24

Hilarious. I bought copies for my friends who are also "of a certain age." I love Nora Ephron's humor.

Book Description

Police Lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara found her calling at an early age when an unstable man broke into her family's home, trapping and terrorizing them for hours. Now she's Savannah's top hostage negotiator, defusing powderkeg situations with a talent for knowing when to give in-and when to jump in and take action. It's satisfying work-and sometimes those skills come in handy at home dealing with her agoraphobic mother, still traumatized by the break-in after all these years, and her precocious seven-year-old, Carly.

It's exactly that heady combination of steely courage and sensitivity that first attracts Duncan Swift to Phoebe. After observing her coax one of his employees down from a roof ledge, he is committed to keeping this intriguing, take-charge woman in his life. She's used to working solo, but Phoebe's discovering that no amount of negotiation can keep Duncan at arm's length.

And when she's grabbed by a man who throws a hood over her head and brutally assaults her-in her own precinct house-Phoebe can't help but be deeply shaken. Then threatening messages show up on her doorstep, and she's not just alarmed but frustrated. How do you go face-to-face with an opponent who refuses to look you in the eye?

Now, with Duncan backing her up every step of the way, she must establish contact with the faceless tormentor who is determined to make her a hostage to fear . . . before she becomes the final showdown.

4 out of 5 stars One of Her Best!.......2007-10-01

Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors. I often wonder how she sleeps at night what with all the stories that must be running rampant thoughout her head and "High Noon" is one of her best. For those of you who avidly follow Ms. Roberts, you will enjoy this book. For those of you who do not follow her, this is a good novel with which to begin your Nora Roberts Journey.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-09-26

While "High Noon" has a an engaging plot line I found the characters rather superficial for a Nora Robert's novel. I usually enjoy her fully developed characters. These are not her usual deep personalities. If you are a fan of her JD Robb series than this will disappoint you since much more of the book is on relationships than on the investigation or hostage negotiation, as the case would be. Other reviewers have compared the main characters to Eve and Roarke but I see very few similarities. Very different personalities. I was also disappointed that none of the dialogue was written in the southern dialect. While the story takes place in the South there was not even a y'all in the conversations. Makes if very difficult to get a feel for the environment of the story. So while it is a good plot I would definately wait to buy it in paper.

2 out of 5 stars Eve Dallas steps back in time.......2007-09-26

Nora Roberts or J.D. Robb? This was a tougher book for me to enjoy than Nora Roberts last few novels. The main character was so out of place with the other characters until I realized it was because she was really speaking with the voice of Eve Dallas, from Ms. Roberts futuristic series of books. Lieutenant MacNamara had the same clipped speech patterns and prickly personality of Eve Dallas. Same type of horrific childhood memories. Rich, capable boyfriend. The extreme violence is also a hall mark of the J.D.Robb series. Also, not once did she come across as a life long resident of Savannah. This book, despite it's length did not have full enough or original main characters to keep me interested.

5 out of 5 stars Nora Does It Again!.......2007-09-24

I think I've finally figured out why Nora Roberts' writing appeals so much to me. She writes with "soul." I love her stories that feature close family ties - and most of them do. Either close family members or close friends. Nora knows exactly how to weave the family bond in a way that makes the reader feel as if they know the family, personally.

And High Noon is an example in point. Police Lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara is the cog of her family wheel. She's the glue that holds the family together. Her mother, Essie, her daughter, Carly, the family friend, Ava, who lives with them, and even her brother, Carter, depend on Phoebe to be "the strong one."

But sometimes Phoebe needs to lean on someone. Duncan Swift is just that person, but will Phoebe allow herself to lean on anyone except herself?

This story has it all. Romance, suspense, intrigue, family dysfunction...

Very good.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic. Kept me reading Page after Page.......2007-09-21

Nora Roberts rarely disappoints me with her wonderful stories. Maybe it's because the plots of her books are very engaging. I have been and continue to be a big fan of NR and in my opinion High Noon is one of her best books. Nora applies just enough to put you in the moment and I loved the characters Duncan and Phoebe. I couldn't help but root for them. High Noon had many twists to it, especially the ending which I won't ruin for you. There was one point in the book that made me cry while I was reading it, but then I am a softy. I just thought it was a wonderful book to read.

Speaking of rooting, check out the terrific Women's Fiction novel Gathering of Cans by Robert L. Saunders and you'll find yourself rooting for Zoie Baker. In this story Zoie is the heroine and a dreamer that feels right down to her bone that she can build a swimming pool by gathering aluminum cans along the country roads. In this stunning, and warm story each unique can, i.e, Nehi, Mountain Dew, etc takes the reader on a trip into the fascinating life of Zoie. I almost cried when I finished the last page. Don't miss this one! Enjoy.

Book Description

Three women learn that the heart of their historic home holds a mystery of years gone by, as number-one bestselling author Nora Roberts brings her In the Garden trilogy to a captivating conclusion, following Blue Dahlia and Black Rose.

A Harper has always lived at Harper House, the centuries-old mansion just outside of Memphis. And for as long as anyone alive remembers, the ghostly Harper Bride has walked the halls, singing lullabies at night...

Hayley Phillips came to Memphis hoping for a new start, for herself and her unborn child. She wasn't looking for a handout from her distant cousin Roz, just a job at her thriving In the Garden nursery. What she found was a home surrounded by beauty and the best friends she's ever had-including Roz's son Harper. To Hayley's delight, her new daughter Lily has really taken to him. To Hayley's chagrin, she has begun to dream about Harper-as much more than a friend...

If Hayley gives in to her desire, she's afraid the foundation she's built with Harper will come tumbling down. Especially since she's begun to suspect that her feelings are no longer completely her own. Flashes of the past and erratic behavior make Hayley believe that the Harper Bride has found a way inside of her mind and body. It's time to put the Bride to rest once and for all, so Hayley can know her own heart again-and whether she's willing to risk it...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not excellent.......2007-08-22

I came away from this conclusion to Roberts' "In the Garden" trilogy a bit disappointed, but satisfied overall. There was just a bit too much of the stereotypical ghost behavior, although I was quite pleased at the different approach from the other two novels. The characters remain sympathetic and likable, although I think Hayley is just a bit too sicky sweet for my taste. The chemistry remains light and easy. The dénouement was a tiny bit anticlimactic, but the drama and excitement beforehand made up for it somewhat.

All in all, a fitting end to an excellent trilogy by an author who rarely lets her readers down. While not one of Roberts' strongest series, it is quite enjoyable and memorable.

4 out of 5 stars Trilogy.......2007-07-19

This was a very good trilogy. It will keep you interested to the last page!

5 out of 5 stars Good Authors.......2007-07-04

Nora Roberts is always a good read and she does not disappoint with this series.

1 out of 5 stars So this is Nora Roberts . . ........2007-06-30

This was my first Nora Roberts and one of the only books I never finished. After several chapters, nothing had happened. No suspense was developed. Just page after page of aimless dialogue among a cast of cookie-cutter romance characters. Only the heroine had a personality - one so insipid and self-absorbed that I began to hope the dreaded ghost would get her. But even the supernatural failed to pump any energy into this listless story. I really wanted to like the author because she has so many books available, but if this is typical of her writing, I'm baffled by her popularity.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Ending to the Trilogy - But I Still Want More!.......2007-05-14

I always hate when trilogies end, and the "In the Garden" trilogy (Blue Dahlia (In the Garden, Book 1), Black Rose: In the Garden Trilogy (In the Garden), and now RED LILY) is no exception. You get to know the characters so completely, and feel such a connection with them, that they become almost real--and you just want to keep on reading about their lives!

RED LILY is the story of Harper Ashby, oldest son of Rosalind (BLACK ROSE), and Hayley Phillips. Hayley had come to Harper House the previous year, pregnant and alone, to beseech Roz, a distant cousin through marriage, for a job. Unwed, with her baby's father out of the picture, Hayley wasn't looking for a handout, but for a chance to start over. What Roz offered her was so much more--a job, a place to stay at the renowned Harper House, and a family.

Now she has her daughter Lily, a great job, and a roof over her head, but lately she's been thinking of Harper, the man whose been her friend through it all, in a brand-new light--that of a love interest. Afraid to ruin their friendship by telling him how she feels, she keeps quiet. Harper, on the other hand, has wanted Hayley in a more than friendly fashion ever since he laid eyes upon her--pregnant and all--more than a year ago. But he's sure that she doesn't think of him in the same way, and he's leary of messing up the friendship that means to much to him.

As these two friends--both wanting to be so much more--fight their attraction to each other, the resident ghost of the house, the Harper Bride, kicks into high gear. She's always been loving and kind to the children in the house, singing them lullabies in the night, but she seems to hate men, and she's become especially violent now that Hayley is entertaining thoughts of romance.

As the whole crew--Roz and her new husband Mitch, a geneologist trying his hardest to discover who the Harper Bride really is; Stella and Logan, both employees of Roz's In the Garden shop; and Hayley and Harper, who live on Harper/Ashby land--try to figure out the Bride's agenda, their lives are in danger, and their hearts and passions intertwine with that of the ghost's.

I loved this entire trilogy, and read RED LILY in one day. It was a perfect conclusion to this powerful family saga, and I was especially happy to finally learn the answers to who the Harper Bride was, and what happened to her.

I will admit that there was one surprise twist to the storyline that I didn't see coming, and wasn't really thrilled with, but since Ms. Roberts wrote it and I didn't, I can't complain! Overall, the story was still great, and in time I learned to live with what I thought was an unnecessary plot device.

Pick up this trilogy today--you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Trilogy.......2007-09-16

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and the two preceding books in the series. It was hard to wait to read the next book. I was able to really connect with this story and found it very interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

A pretty average and very light fantasy. It seems a group of vampire hunters from our world have gone to another to help a queen fight an evil vampire queen. Including a vampire nightclub owner, and a couple of other supernatural types.

For a war against an evil vampire queen, well, there really isn't much war. The evil vampire queen is pretty lame, too. Probably because she is a crazy girl that became a vampire, not really Lilith.

The battle at the end is over in about two eyeblinks. Pretty much it seems all this is kept out of it to have space for the romance parts.

Other than that, Roberts seems to be a decent enough writer, but I doubt she grew up reading about medieval warfare or monsters.

5 out of 5 stars I wish it wasn't over.............2007-07-26

As I read the last few pages this afternoon I was caught in a bittersweet battle of not wanting the story to end and yearning to read the finale. What a great book and a great trilogy.

With the complex nature and background of Cian I would love to read about his journey through his life of being "damned" and his transition into "normal" society. I think we need some more of him. What an amazing character.

5 out of 5 stars Trilogies Rock.......2007-07-19

Nora Roberts is the best a trilogies. They all have a good ending but you cant wait to read the next one. This book will hook you.

3 out of 5 stars poorly read.......2007-07-16

I truly enjoy all of Nora Roberts books, and I read the first 2 Circle Trilogy books. The Book 3, I did not realize was ordered as an audio book. The story is great, the reading terrible. I would not recommend anyone getting the audio unless this is really your thing. I like to read and imagine what someones voice would sound like, not listen to a man try to read a woman's part and sound like a female. Terrible reading!

This is my first Nora Roberts novel and, after reading the first three chapters, I went online to cancel my order for the next four novels--it was that bad. Fortunately, it gets better. It's partly because she drowns the reader in sci-fi descriptions right at the beginning to update them about what it's like to live in 2058 and partly because the protagonist Eve Dallas starts out as not a very likeable character. I would also have to say that Roberts begins the novel with way too many adjectives that just made it irritating to read. After about the sixth chapter, it definitely got better and I'm hoping the sequels will also be better.

Some things were predictable, many things didn't quite fit, but the romance between Roarke and Dallas is a nice sideline and they do seem perfect for each other. Since 26 novels in this series seem to have already been written in just 12 years, I'm hoping the writing gets better and that she isn't just churning out novels every month (she has other series as well). I would definitely have to say that I like other authors' writing style much better, but quite frankly I'm running out of authors to read. When I read a book, I prefer to have it read like the person is speaking to me, not like I'm reading an encyclopedia with a plot included. The first part of the novel reads more like the latter, while the last part reads more like the former. That being said, I did enjoy it enough to finish the novel in a day (but it was a weekend and I read a lot) and I did place a subsequent order for the sequel. I think if you like Preston and Child or Koontz, you will like this one. The ideas of what the future would be like are sometimes progressive and imaginative (licensed prostitutes and lasers instead of messy handguns), while at other times downright frightening (unlimited Congressional terms and only the rich can afford real coffee).

I've heard many reviewers bash sex scenes by various authors. The sex scenes in this novel fit, but weren't particularly well-written. I had to read two at least twice to understand what the author was eluding to and one, I'm afraid, I still don't quite get. I guess maybe because I've been married for almost two decades. I think if the reader doesn't get it (and I'm pretty enlightened), then maybe it's just poorly written. There were a couple of other parts in the book that I didn't get either that had nothing to do with sex scenes. Sometimes you just need to say what you want to say and not use so many colorful adjectives and metaphors to describe it.

My last comment has to do with the length of the novel. It's considerably shorter than Dean Koontz paperbacks or Preston and Child paperbacks. I think it took me four hours to read and it usually takes me six hours to read Koontz or Preston and Child. Personally, I liked the shorter length and I didn't feel cheated at all. The plot was well-developed by the end and I thoroughly enjoyed the way Roberts tied up all the loose ends--it fit and wasn't just hastily finished. So I enjoy the shorter length. I wish other authors could complete an entire novel in that amount of space. (I sometimes feel that Koontz rushes to find an ending in the last two chapters and am left somewhat frustrated with the ending.)

I sometimes wish Amazon allowed ten star ratings instead of only five. I would give the plot a 10 and the writing a 5 or 6.

4 out of 5 stars Good romantic suspense. .......2007-08-13

Having read about a half dozen Roberts books of very mixed quality, this is definately my favorite so far. It starts out with the murder of a prostitute, who also happens to be the granddaughter of a conservative senator. The killer has left a note, "One of Six", suggesting a serial killer. Eve Dallas is on the case, and more bodies pop up. While investigating the case, Dallas falls in love with a mysterious businessman known only as Roarke.

This time, Roberts doesn't waste any time on irrelevant subplots. The story starts from page one and keeps its pace throughout. The romance does not feel gratuitous as in some romantic suspense novels; it's well connected to the main plot. "Naked in Death" is a quick, entertaining read for romance and (non-romance) mystery readers alike.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price, better than CD.......2007-08-09

30+ dollars for a set of CD's that my wife would have to swap and keep track of......no way.

This title was on ONE (1) MP3 Cd, and was easily copied (no copy protection) to my wife's MP3 player and she was listeing to the entire book at night as she worked. No swapping discs, and the original disc stayed in the dvd-like case SAFE. It is the EXACT same version as found on the audio CD.

I will definately be buying Books on MP3 if I have a choice in the matter. The convenience AND price makes this a no brainer.

The shipping and price was very fair and best of all, IT WAS IN STOCK. AMAZON is fast becoming my first chioce for many things.

5 out of 5 stars A real page turner.......2007-08-04

This one gave me the background on Roarke and Eve Dallas. Great summer read.

5 out of 5 stars Once you read this one you will be HOOKED!.......2007-08-03

It all starts right here with Eve, Roarke, Mavis and the rest of the "In Death" family. The cases are serious and this one leads her right to a love she would have never imagined could belong to her. Roarke is absolutely to die for. And, I don't know of anyone out there who doesn't want a gourmet cup of coffee after this book either.

5 out of 5 stars Who knew she wrote more than Gooey Romance........2007-09-18

This series was my first exposure to Nora Roberts, I have to admit I never gave her books a second look, why would I read a trashy romance novel. Well I found I had been painting her with a very prejudiced brush, what a mistake! This is a great fantasy series, and the romance there is is very fun and not over the top. I will definitely look for more fantasy books from Ms. Roberts.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book, especially if you enjoy fantasy and romance!.......2007-08-19

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had the perfect mix of fantasy and romance. Blair is not your typical romance novel heroine. All of the main characters contribute to the story with their unique personalities and style. This is a great trilogy!

5 out of 5 stars Dance of the Imagination..........2007-08-16

Not as superb as the first book of the triology, but still fabulous! The story had some lags and the romance between the two was just not as intense as that of Hoyt and Glenna, but still another smash hit filled with all awe! Fantasy and reality have a heavenly mix once again! A MUST READ TRILOGY!!

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, even if it's a little too much like Buffy!.......2007-06-08

It took me a long time to get into the 1st book in this series, but after I did I couldn't put them down. I read all three back to back and really enjoyed them. I am a huge fan of Buffy and Angel, the shows, and found a lot of odd similarities between some of the characters from the TV shows and in the books, but oh well. All in all, enjoyable. If you're a Nora Roberts fan, give them a chance, I'm sure you will enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Such a letdown!.......2007-05-26

Hello,
Im bucking the trend here...but I hated this book! Don't get me wrong NR is an excelent wordsmith, however Blair and Larkin's story was so...BLAH!
I can't think of anything good to write- oh yes it made me anticipate Moira and Cian's story all the more

In 21st-century New York City, tough-as-nails cop Eve Dallas can survive a bombing, seduce her husband, and outsmart a terrorist--all on four hours of sleep. In this latest installment of the In Death series, author J.D. Robb (a.k.a. Nora Roberts) casts our heroine against an enigmatic group of terrorists named Cassandra. With no clear motivation or demands, Cassandra feeds on the thrill of senseless killing and the calculated destruction of Eve's world.

Relying on her own brawn and brains, as well as that of her aid Peabody and her husband Roarke, Eve begins to unravel a mystery that began decades before. When the killer's threats land close to home, Eve knows she has no choice but to gamble her own life for the chance to save her city as well as her loved ones.

J.D. Robb's combinations of mystery, suspense, and romance keep the fans of this series clamoring for more, and Loyalty in Death has equal amounts of each. While the passion between Eve and Roarke is as good as ever, the introduction of a new romantic element certainly turns up the heat and is a welcome twist. Though the evil-terrorist-in-NYC theme has been done before (most recently in The Siege), these beloved characters put up a good fight, and keep us glued to the pages. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-07-19

I love this series... you must read it to understand. It's all about a homicide detective named Lt. Eve Dallas and how she goes about solving a case which always seems imposibble to solve at first.

5 out of 5 stars The changing face of terror.......2007-04-11

Even the future can't change the evil of of a terrorist organization's heart. Means, motives and methods all adapt to meet the changing techologies, but the one constant is the madness moving the characters involved.

Now, 50 years in the future, it falls on the shoulders of Eve Dallas to defeat terror's latest birth child....

A great story. I loved it more than most of the early Eve Dallas books. The characters become more lifelike with each story told and this one brings them out of the realm of fantasy, into a reality that is all their own....

A very exciting read!

5 out of 5 stars Always a hit!.......2006-08-26

Just when you think you know all the turns JD Robb can take you, she still takes you to the edge with these main characters, Eve & Roarke! She is lively, edgy, and never disappoints! Roarke adds just the edge she needs! It will make you laugh, pause & sigh, and keep turning the pages until you finish. Never gets old, as the character are always entertaining! Fast read.

5 out of 5 stars Larger than life.......2006-08-24

The 10th story (9 novels, 1 novella) in the In Death series gives readers a break after the emotional intensity of the preceding book, Conspiracy in Death.

Instead of a murderer or a serial killer, this time NYPSD homicide lieutenant Eve Dallas is up against terrorists who are bent on blowing up NYC landmarks.

The Good:
The characterization. As always, that's J.D. Robb's (Nora's) genius. Whatever the plot, she nails the characters.
The balance between seriousness and exaggeration. In this book, much is larger than life, but it's balanced with some serious and emotional scenes.
The continuing story. We get developments in Eve's past and in Peabody's life, and my personal favorite: Eve and Roarke's relationship continues to develop at a realistic pace.

The Bad:
I had a problem with the explanation for the first murder.
The motivation for the terrorist group was unclear.
The subject matter might hit a little too close to reality for some readers.

The Unusual:
It's a departure for the series, and I found I enjoyed it more if I viewed it as such. It's a bit over the top, moreso than other books in the series, as is particularly evident in the opening and closing scenes.

The Verdict:
It's an exciting, lively story, and the developments in the personal lives of several of the characters are well worth the read and a good addition to the series.

3 out of 5 stars Not tight enough.......2006-05-18

Not bad but just quite average. There should've been a bit more work done, more interviews, etc. Anyways, the theme of arrogancy has been used in many of her books and it's starting to get a little old.

I sure hope she's really improving and will stop using this theme all too often.

AS USUAL ONE OF HER BEST ! SHE IS ONE OF THE BEST WRITERS AROUND. WHETHER SHE IS WRITING AS NORA ROBERTS OR JD. ROBB. I ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE LATEST BOOKS, OR ONE I MAY HAVE MISSED. YEARS AGO.

3 out of 5 stars Early roots of the MacGregor Series.......2002-10-31

This book relates the story of Daniel and Anna and shows how they met and formed an immediate love/hate connection. Both fiercely independent, they each wanted their own way in life more than they wanted each other. Anna was a woman ahead of her time, studying to be a doctor against the wishes of her parents and the norms of society. Daniel was a consummate businessman, who had begun to build a business empire which would only grow in the future. Anna wanted a career and Daniel wanted her to be his non-working wife. How they worked out their differences is the crux of this first story. The second story tells of Daniel's ancestor, Ian, who had a history as a rebel in his native Scotland and who brought that rebellious spirit to America where he continued to fight the British. The first story is longer and does a better job of developing the characters, while the second one is almost too short to tell the story properly. For The MacGregor Family fans, however, this book fills in some information about the history of the family.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of MacGregor Lore.......2002-10-23

While not as captivating as some of the other books in Nora Roberts' fabulous MacGregor series, this book is important because it provides some history into the MacGregor clan, and lets us see the irrascible patriarch Daniel MacGregor as a young man courting "his Anna."

Tall and imposing with a bright red beard, young Daniel MacGregor is already a prominent businessman-about-town when he meets Anna at a soiree. He takes one look at her, and in the way of many MacGregors to come, he knows she is the one for him. But Anna is no easy catch. At a time when women were expected to be quiet and acquiescent, Anna is attending medical school, one of the few of her gender to do so. And she had no time for the brash, very outspoken, often embarrassing Daniel MacGregor. Or so she thinks. Anna and Daniel's courtship changes them both. He learns to be more humble. She learns to be more giving. And so a great dynasty is born.

The second story harkens back to a stalwart and brave MacGregor ancestor, Ian, who is fighting for the survival of his beloved Scotland against England in the bloody Culloden wars. This segment is written in the way of all good historical romances, with plenty of adventure thrown in. The battle scenes are particularly good, and we learn just what drove Ian and his beloved bride Serena to America, where the MacGregor clan took permanent root. Along the way, there is plenty of danger for Ian, Serena, their newborn child, and all their family. A good, dashing romance.

I would characterize this story as the weakest in the MacGregor series, but very important to those afficionadoes, like me, who want every single tidbit of information about the clan that Roberts is willing to provide.

4 out of 5 stars The first story was good, the second wasn't.......2002-03-25

I thought that Daniel and Anna's story was great. I really enjoyed going back to when women weren't allowed to do anything and how Anna showed them wrong. I was a bit confused on the second story because I thought that Daniel was a full-blooded Scot. Did his ancestors move back to Ireland? Confusing and a little too short to bring out the characters. The Alan and Serena stories were my favorite and I enjoyed hearing about Daniel's grandchildren.

3 out of 5 stars Heart Attack on the Seashore.......2007-07-25

This book fell off my wife's bookshelf, which made me pick it up and decide to read it. I hadn't read the first two books in the trilogy, but have read a couple of Roberts' other books. As a romance, I enjoyed the feisty aspect of the couple. I fully enjoyed Darcy's independence and appreciated that those qualities remained even after she realized she was in love. The part of the book that did not work for me was that so much of it revolved around the building of the theatre. I thought it was emphasized to such a degree that I fully expected the theatre to be completed by the end of the novel and hear an account of the first concert with the Gallagher family. Instead, we get mired in Trevor's inability to fall in love and say he loves Darcy. While I understand guys who are commitment-shy, it seemed so belabored that by the final pages I was tired of Trevor's romantic stupidity. I also thought that having a record label is a very speculative business, as is building a theatre. The fact that his family had huge amounts of money could explain his ability to dally in the arts, but it hardly seemed like the bedrock of a multi-million dollar multi-national corporation. The fairy story with the ghosts was quaint, but there wasn't much of a bang for the buck there. The legend assumes that dead people have hormones much as the living that results in a dead person mating ritual. I found that story line disrespectful. The Gallagher pub sounded like an interesting place to visit. However, the story seemed to have loose ends and remained incomplete as it abruptly concluded. I would have liked a chapter that projected the characters into the future a bit for us.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Trilogy.......2007-06-01

I was recently introduced to Nora Roberts through her In the Garden Trilogy, which I only enjoyed two of the three. Since then, I have jumped head first into reading her books and have experienced quite a few enjoyable reads, both through individual books and trilogies. On a whim, I picked up these three books and, within days, I was finished with the third book. This would have to be my favorite of all her series and by the end of the third book, I was wishing that I hadn't gone through them so fast. The Gallagher family was a blast to read and I enjoyed everything from their family dynamic, to their pub and also the Irish setting. I've already passed them off to a co-worker and am looking forward to reading them again. Roberts also made me fall in love with Ireland through her wonderfully described setting and Irish tales. Highly recommended reading!

5 out of 5 stars Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25

You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.

5 out of 5 stars Gallaghers of Ardmore Trilogy by Nora Roberts.......2007-02-16

Do you believe in fairies? Do you have a fondness for the Emerald Isle? Do you believe in true love? You will after reading this enchanting trilogy by Nora Roberts. Thank goodness I purchased all three books at the same time as I couldn't wait for the pages to turn. The characters are so endearing, I often felt that I was inside Gallagher's pub or walking with them over the green hills of Ireland on a "soft" day.
