5 out of 5 stars Jackie Mason helps you learn to talk Jewish the Yiddish way.......2007-02-06

I wanted to learn some common Yiddish sayings. So I bought Jackie Masons' book titled: "How to Talk Jewish". It is an enjoyable book complete with Yiddish sayings and a taste of Jewish life as only Jackie Mason can tell it.

2 out of 5 stars How to Talk Jewish.......2006-03-03

Not as good as I had hoped. He explains a lot of Yiddish phrases that are not commonly used. The commonly used expressions were not defined as well as I could have defined them myself.

5 out of 5 stars Can we talk????.......2003-04-09

Quintessential Jackie! Hilarious! A must-have in a Jewish humor library. May I also recommend a nifty, gezunta book I received as a gift and fell in love with? "A Little joy, A Little Oy" -- if Jackie's a main course Joy, Oy is one amazing antipasto.

5 out of 5 stars OY A KLUG!.......2002-02-06

Only a meshuggener would not find this book entertaining and informative. Then again, probably only meshuggeners would want to READ shtick like this. Too bad Jackie didn't record this for the blind and the goyim; LISTENING to his spiel would just make this so much more of a mecheieha. If only that gantseh macher Webster had had Jackie as his editor -- oy!

5 out of 5 stars Lexicography that is witty and wise.......2001-02-04

This is a smart little book of 93 Yiddish words and expressions that are defined, illuminated, and used-in-a-sentence by comic and philosopher Mason. In his Introduction, a thoughtful essay on Yiddish, he asserts that although he born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1934, he grew up in a one hundred percent Yiddish-speaking world ("I didn't know that anybody in this country spoke English until I was old enough to go to the movies.") His family moved back to New York before he was five.

This little book contains a wealth of Masonisms. Jackie Mason used to have run-ins with censors and others. He reserves the right to be both self-deprecating and insulting. Jews, gentiles, politics, marriage, family, ethnicity, money, power, and God himself - all are up for grabs. There are a lot of funny stories. In addition, he has an understanding of the Yiddish language that he is happy to share. (Harry Truman was haimish - accessible, natural - FDR was not. Colorful explanation is provided.) He offers a theory of chicken soup that links it -successfully - to most of the world's cuisines. He is never dull. Mason: "It seems that in English that you have to prove that you're not emotional in order to have class." He posits his sociolinguistic theory (which you've heard if you've seen or heard his stage show) that the more emotional the speech - content and structure - the more "low class" the speaker. He defends emotionality. He loves Yiddish, and in fact the language (black English, specifically) of any people engaged in a battle of wits to survive.

A funny and endearing book.

If you call yourself a computer graphics professional but aren't sure of the meaning of cukaloris, Lambertian reflection, or umbra, you might want to pick up a copy of Visual Effects in a Digital World: A Comprehensive Glossary of over 7,000 Visual Effects Terms. Educational, fun, and historically fascinating, this is one of those books that every pixel monkey should have on his or her shelf.

If you've ever wondered what, exactly, rotoscope means (it has three different meanings) or what to eat with a "metaball," this book is for you. Chock full of interesting tidbits and a 32-page color gallery of examples, this is probably one of the more interesting technical dictionaries you'll ever have the pleasure of looking through.

Perhaps you know the difference between an array and an Arri, but the producer you're trying to explain it to is clueless. The clear, concise definitions listed here can help elucidate these terms and others so that even the most dense suit will, if not understand, at least feel like you must know what you're talking about.

It's one thing to be able to know what buttons to push, but something else entirely to be able to stump your friends with the meaning of arcane terms like Lindenmayer System or octrees. Everyone knows you're a geek. Now you can prove it. --Mike Caputo

3 out of 5 stars Good as a dictionary, no in-depth technical.......2002-01-31

A thorough coverage of industry terminology, in an industry where terms are relentless being colored, reinvented and made anachronisms. However don't expect in-depth coverage of the mechanics of a given technique - there is simply no room for detail with this many terms to cover.

5 out of 5 stars A great, extremely comprehensive reference.......2001-09-18

I've watched Karen put this book together over the course of the last year or so (even had a chance to give my 2cents on a couple of terms) and so I can hardly be called an Unbiased Reviewer. But now that it's done, I'd have to say that just about anybody who is involved with visual effects (which these days means just about any aspect of filmmaking in general) will find this book well worth owning. And even if you HAVE been in the industry for a long time, I guarantee that you'll be able to learn a few new things (or re-learn a few old things) after thumbing through this book.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2001-08-26

Karen E. Goulekas has saved me quite some time with this book by providing a complete description for over 7,000 visual effects terms often referred to within the industry. In the past, I often had to search the net for certain terms and descriptions that had me baffled...but no more. For those of you who are considering buying this book, know that it isn't a book full of pictures (Although it does contain 32 pages of colour stills); It isn't a book detailing visual effects work in particular films; It is what is says - 'A comprehensive glossary of over 7,000 visual effects terms'. If this is what you're looking for, this book is for you.

Students of film and weekend movie buffs will find it a useful companion for better understanding the art of film.

I received the book quickly and I got it for a really cheap price, but the book itself was pretty beat up, it had a coffee cup ring on the front cover. But, after I cleaned it off everything was great!!!

4 out of 5 stars What it is these people in the credits really do.......2000-07-10

This book really breaks it all down in terms of what the job responsibilites for film crew members are. You've seen all those titles in the head and tail credits and even if you're a seasoned professional, sometimes it's not clear what these people are actually doing. I love the way this book lays it all out there in great detail and how short and to the point it is. The introduction is a bit short and there's not much else in this book other than job descriptions. It's short on case studies ... but as for a dictionary of terms I think this book has it all, says it all, and should be a bible on every producer's shelf. I bought a copy for my producer - mainly because this is one book she needed and I wasn't prepared to part with.

      4 out of 5 stars sound like a pro!.......2005-01-15

How many of us have heard terms used in reference to the film industry and not known what the person was talking about? It is like the industry has their very own foreign language, and if you aren't a part of it, you'll never be able to fathom it (and you thought Greek was difficult!). Thankfully, Tim thought to put together a handy and totally comprehensive guide for the uninitiated. There are numerous phrases, slang expressions, titles, job position references and more explained in this pocket- sized tome.

Whether you are a hopeful actor, a movie buff, or it is your very first day on the set, this it the book for you! In it all will be explained, including some of the walkie-talkie code that set people speak in, and some of the signs that can be seen on sets. Not stopping with the witty descriptions, Tim's even included some pictures to help illustrate some of the terms. A whole new world is lying in wait between the covers, and it is in fairly high demand - the copy I received from Tim is a third edition printing.

An aquarium or fishbowl is actually the control booth or mixing room in a recording studio, named for its large window that looks into the recording room. BFL is a technical acronym for Big F#%*ing Light. A Burned Location turns out to be any location that will not allow filming due to previous problems with film crews. There are many reasons that this can come about, apparently.

There are also terms named for real people. The Mae West Shot is a shot that frames an actor from the top of their head to just below their chest. The Abby Singer Shot is the second to last shot of the day, named after the first assistant director who would always say it was the last shot when it wasn't really. (The last shot is known as the Window Shot or the Martini Shot). A Groucho is when a cameraman asks an actor to crouch as he walks, and was inspired by the late Groucho Marx.

There are terms for food, make-up, lighting, costuming, location, and a zillion other things involved with filming. This book is just brimming over with helpful terminology and should be found on any movie buff or actor's shelf. Get to know a little more about the film industry and sound like a pro!

I have the chance to be on set on occassion and take this book with me. I find behind-the-scene activity facinating and can keep up with the terminology without having to ask people as they work. Then if I do get to chat with the camera man, I am already up on the lingo.

      4 out of 5 stars Nice reference.......2004-10-26

I'm a fiend for reference books, especially anything to do with words and language. This book is very nicely done, and I find it handy for when I'm watching extended features on DVDs and the like.

Are you new to the industry? If so, this guide is an excellent resource. It can help you get through your first day on the job on a television set!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource book for students of film.......2004-10-25

I love this book. It is very clear that Tim has a great grasp of the film industry and his knowledge is transformed into what should be a standard text for all students of film.
