The evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark is one of the great untold stories of World War II. On September 29, 1943, word got out in Denmark that Jews were to be detained and then sent to the death camps. Within hours the Danish resistance, population and police arranged a small flotilla to herd 7,000 Jews to Sweden. Lois Lowry fictionalizes a true-story account to bring this courageous tale to life. She brings the experience to life through the eyes of 10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen, whose family harbors her best friend, Ellen Rosen, on the eve of the round-up and helps smuggles Ellen's family out of the country.
Number the Stars won the 1990 Newbery Medal.
Book Description
Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are "relocated," Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen's life.

Zapnes' Crew talks about Number the Stars.......2007-06-22
This book is about courage and bravery for Annemarie and Ellen during World War II when German Nazis invade and occupy Denmark, along with other European countries. The two families, the Rosens and the Johansens, are involved in a journey that many took to help Jews in Denmark to safety. We recommend this historical fiction to people who want to learn about WW II and read about the struggle of the Jews and Danes that lived in Denmark during the war. It's a heart-breaking story about love and danger.

Cross Over Troubled Waters
Hope is like the starsâalways there, yet shining brightest in the blackest of nights. It is like the dawn, always rising anew. Hope is for everyone, and that includes you. This collection of more than twenty true stories from a ranch of rescued dreams unveils the heart of true strength and the character of genuine courage. Experience for yourself the kind of love and hope that change a person from the inside out. Because sometimes, just believing in someone is enough for them to start believing in themselves. It’s the galvanizing truth that no matter how deep your painâ¦God’s love exceeds it still.
Sometimes, just believing in someone
is enough for them to start
believing in themselvesâ¦
Without raising his eyes to look at me, in a voice barely clearing the horizon of a whisper, he said, âI know you don’t love me⦠You just say that ’cuz you’re an adult and it’s kinda like your job. But I know you don’t really love me.â
Suffering and blessing balance on the same high wire, each giving stability and depth to the other. The one that we feel the mostâ¦is ultimately the one that we give the most.
It was her eyes that gave her away. The conflict of her mortal illness versus her will raged behind them. Her body shouted, âI’m sick and it’s getting harder and harder to do the things I love!â while her indomitable will shouted back, âYeah, but I’m just a little kid, and little kids should get to ride horses!â
What a relief it is when we begin to understand that it is within our hardships that truth is elevated from our hearts to our heads.
âDuring the darkest days I’d ever known, I was introduced to the unconditional love of a little horse and a merciful God, and my life has never been the same,â says author Kim Meeder . And her book proves that hope is not only for us to keepâ¦but to give.
âStirring, encouraging, and inspirational, Bridge Called Hope reminds us that hope is heaven sent for everyone, and that we, too, can make a positive difference in others’ lives."

Story Behind the Book
âI was moved to write Hope Rising and Bridge Called Hope because, when I needed it the most, someone shared hope with me and it saved my life. During the darkest days I’d ever known, I was introduced to the unconditional love of a little horse and a merciful God, and my life has never been the same. Everything in our life is about choices. We cannot control our circumstances, but we can control how we choose to feel about them. The pain that we feel in this life is certain. What is equally certain is how we choose to feel about the pain. It can destroy usâor it can define us. The choice is uniquely ours.â âKim Meeder

As beautiful as the first! .......2007-09-19
Most sequels don't measure up to the first book, but this one is a rarity. It is as well written and beautiful as the its predecessor. I hope it's not the end of the author's writen journey.
Wonderful inspiration.......2007-09-04
This book was much like Kim's first book - "Hope Rising". Full of wonderful stories about the many horses and children who have spent time at the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch and because of their time there, have come away with new hope about life itself. Great reading!
Keep your tissues handy.......2007-08-26
Kims stories of abused children will bring a tear to almost anyones eyes. Her writing paints a vivid image in your head, as if you are there yourself. But this is not merely a book about unwanted and abused children. It's a story of how one couple takes God's message of hope to ones who have none.
Bridge Called Hope.......2007-08-23
This was a beautiful story with and important message of reaching those who feel they are without hope in this world. the title is very appropriate and the message is one that is greatly needed in our world today. There is hope!
Hope Rising.......2007-08-19
Second book by this author that offers true, inspiring, heart-tugging stories how horses and children that need mending from abuse or other physical/mental issues help pull each other through to a path of healing; and the husband and wife team that makes it all happen through faith.

Book Description
In the seventy years since the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan during a flight over the Central Pacific, their fate has remained one of history's most debated mysteries. Dozens of books have offered a variety of solutions to the puzzle, but they all draw on the same handful of documents and conflicting eyewitness accounts.
Now a wealth of new information uncovered by the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) allows this book to offer the first fully documented history of what happened. Scrupulously accurate and thrilling to read, it tells the story from the letters, logs, and telegrams that recorded events as they unfolded. Many long-accepted facts are revealed as myths.
Author Ric Gillespie, TIGHAR's executive director, draws on the work of his organization's historians, archæologists, and scientists, who compiled and analyzed more than five thousand documents relating to the Earhart case. Their research led to the hypothesis that Earhart and Noonan died as castaways on a remote Pacific atoll. But this book is not a polemic that argues for a particular theory. Rather, it presents all of the authenticated historical dots and leaves it to the reader to make the connections. In addition to details about the Earhart's career and final flight, the book examines her relationship with the U.S. government and the massive search undertaken by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy.
For serious students of Earhart's disappearance, an accompanying DVD reproduces the documents, reports, and technical studies cited in the text, allowing instant review and verification of the sources.
Customer Reviews:
non-scientists beware.......2007-09-11
This highly technical read is not for the mere curious reader or fan of this great American woman. This book contains a vivid picture of the search for America's sweetheart of 1937,Amelia Earhart and her navigator ,Fred Noonan. An intricate compilation of radio transmissions provides a picture of an overwhelmed search party, miscommunicated information and an under skilled pilot. This is not the whole picture and if one seeks a glimpse into the woman behind the incident this is not the book for you
Captivating read on Amelia's Misadventures.......2007-08-17
"Finding Amelia: the True Story of the Earhart Disappearance," Ric Gillespie, Naval Institute Press, Maryland, 2006, ISBN 1-59114-319-2, HC 242 pges., Notes 44 pgs., Index 8 pgs., Content & Forward 10 pgs., plus 40 B/W photos, map & DVD (for computer) to access photos, maps, logs of the Earhart misadventure.
A captivating narrative & chronicle of the flying life and times of pilot Amelia Earhart, both researched 18 years and written by Exec. Dir. of TIGHAR, an Internat. Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. We are provided detailed accounts of Earhart's two world flight attempts, neither successful, with the aviatrix's last contact being July 2, 1937 while enroute to Howland Isle from Lae, New Guinea and thence to California.
Glimpses are given of Amelia Earhart's quest for notoriety during her earlier years which found her intrigued by flying machines, seeking adventure, finding celebrity status & desiring increased role for American women. But, it is not a bibliography or even a book about Amelia. It is a book of Amelia's monomaniacal attachment to flying, her aeronautical skill confines, that emphasizes her attempts to encircle the globe, imprima her 2nd attempt going Eastward, departing Oakland, California on May 19, 1937 accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan in her Lockheed Electra 10E twin engine aircraft. There is detailed & documented accountings of the massive search by US Coast Guard and Naval ships & planes and detailed reference to ships' logs of communications, etc., and interviews with Ham Radio operators who credibly appear to have identified her signals. The many B/W photographs, maps and the DVD are commendatory to this scholarly study. A few readers may find the detailed readings, etc., of the ships' logs and radiocommunication transmission times and references to frequencies and harmonics confusing & tedious, but the author's intentions to present the factual data is preserved.
Amelia Earhart on Fantasy Island?.......2007-06-29
I have followed Mr. Gillespie's search for years, and it is, sadly, largely based on wishful thinking instead of facts, such as the fuel capacity of Amelia's Lockheed 10E Electra. Simply put, there is NO WAY it could have reached where he claims it is. The book is an interesting read, and reasonably well done, and there are some opposing viewpoints presented. Factually, though, it is an illusion (one that has paid Mr. Gillespie quite well for a long time). An entertaining read, but not historical research-just a flight of fancy--
Finding Amelia.......2007-03-19
The book is a good chronicle of the last flight, and what is (and isn't known). While there isn't anything really new that hasn't been covered before, the book is a good compliment to others previously published on the Earhart story. The focus on (mis)communications highlights the thread of errors that lead to the tragedy. The inclusion of the disc (a nice touch!) containing the source data allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.
Clarification on Amelia.......2007-01-10
Excellently written. Very informative. I think this book clears up why Amelia dissappeared. It is no mystery any more.
Book Description
This book follows all NIMS ICS (National Incident Management System--Incident Command System) processes and principles. Beyond Initial Response was written to fill a significant gap in ICS training. Critical ICS position-specific training is difficult to get, yet responders have the responsibility to effectively operate in an ICS organization. This book removes the gap, instills confidence, knowledge and assurance that is required to be successful in an ICS command. Major focus areas: 1) the ICS Planning Process discussed in extensive detail, 2) ICS positions (13 critical positions thoroughly covered in depth), and 3) Unified Command: what it takes to be successful. This book is an invaluable reference tool that contains numerous job aids, checklists, illustrations and sample documents enabling the user to seamlessly work within the Incident Command System. In addition, it is an excellent support source for ICS training, contingency planning and response operations. Beyond Initial Response should be within arms length whether you are training or deploying.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for all responders!.......2006-11-29
This is a great review of the ICS process! It's easy to read, with exceptional examples of each situation, how to conduct meetings, and how to fill out the ICS forms. I have brought it to a few excercises with me and everyone who looks at it, wants one! The authors did an INCREDIBLE job of combining their particular areas of expertise into a very educational product!
Highly recommended - clear, concise and well crafted........2006-08-15
An exceptional reference and text. Clearly, the authors have many years experience in emergency response and have applied their expertise to the core incident management concepts. If you are looking for a way to understand the National Incident Management System from concept to `nuts and bolts, down in the field' processes, this is the best you will find.

Denise Holden's life is a fragile mix of luck and hard work. A single mom of a speech-delayed son, Denise makes ends meet by moving to the small town of Edenton, North Carolina, and working the late shift as a waitress. When Denise crashes her car and her son Kyle flees the accident and disappears into the storm, her only stroke of luck is the quick arrival of Taylor McAden, a volunteer fireman. Taylor's got a knack for fixing people, and he can't help wanting to be involved with Denise beyond the initial rescue of Kyle.
As Taylor helps Denise recover from the accident and get to know the town, they discover a sweet bond and a magical chemistry that pulls them closer and closer. Though Taylor fits perfectly into Denise's family, he's unable to open his heart to being loved by her. As Taylor struggles to understand his conflicting desires, Denise questions the wisdom of gambling with Kyle's and her own emotions.
Author Nicholas Sparks has found a loyal audience for his stories about the internal battles that accompany the arrival of love. His heroes may be truck-driving manly men and his heroines emotional swamis, but it's easy to overlook the traditional roles when the complexities of human relationships are so beautifully described. Sparks has found his forte, and this novel is sure to be as popular as his earlier works. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Customer Reviews:
Insipid, Lifetime television-worthy...maybe.......2007-09-01
This was such an insipid book. I couldn't believe this was actually a novel and not a short story in the back of Good Housekeeping. This sounds like the screenplay for a Lifetime tv movie. I couldn't finish reading it. The writing was so bad and the characters were not interesting at all. A cheap novel.
Frustrating read.......2007-07-18
I basically agree with all the points made here by reviewers who have criticized this book. I didn't like it very much. I'm sorry to say that this was my first Sparks book. I probably should have chosen something else, because now I have no interest in reading what may be his better books. It isn't completely bad - for about the first third of the book, I thought it was a fairly good read. And aside from some "telling rather than showing" episodes, the writing is fine - he mostly writes well, in that respect it is easy to see why his books are often bestsellers - but I didn't identify with, or even like, the characters.
I took the book out of a box at work. When people retire or leave the job for another reason, they usually leave books in a common area, free for the taking. I always go through them, and take whatever interests me. Last time there were quite a few fairly recent popular novels. I took the Sparks book because I'd seen (and liked) The Notebook, and have read good reviews of his writing. It's pretty hard to believe that a man is writing this book, or for that matter, wrote The Notebook. I suppose that is kind of a sexist remark, I mean why can't a man write a romantic story?, but these works are not simply romantic, they are the ultimate "chick lit" or "chick flick." (Full disclosure: I hate those terms, and usually I am not thrilled with that genre either, at least not as done by a contemporary author. I also do not like movies such as You've Got Mail, etc.)
Anyway, at about the halfway point through this book I'd have liked to reach into the pages and slap the main female character because she was so whiny and "poor me," and then slap her love interest just for good measure. Not that he didn't deserve a good slap for his own tiresome nature. It seemed the reader was supposed to view him as heroic? I don't think so; I think he was a glory hog. And I found the situation with the son extremely frustrating. If it was real life, the mother's choices would have made his life worse, not better. (A minor note, the food they ate because they were poor would have made her fat, not thin. And that sort of diet would not have helped the boy's learning disabilities).
I kept hoping something really bad would happen to one of the characters and the book would wind up surprising me and being worth the effort! Then - surprise, surprise - something bad does happen, but unfortunately not to one of the main characters.
I don't know if The Notebook read like this, maybe. But even if it did, the looking back through Altzheimer's Disease theme made the story much more charming. With this book I was so annoyed that the so-called hardships these two characters faced were either 1) self-inflicted, 2) not all that difficult, yet they acted like such martyrs or 3) sad, but get over it already! I guess I know why I found this book for free in a box.
An Okay Read.......2007-06-26
I just finished "The Rescue". The story was interesting and yet some of it was disturbing. For one the way Denise worked with Kyle. Strapping him in a chair for 4 hours at a time and making him say words. In my mind that was close to child abuse. I am a teacher and know a [..]has a short attention span and can't imagine making a [...] sit for 4 hours while I demanded he say words. There are other ways to work with a child even while you play with them and repeat words with much shorter spans of time. That bothered me and wondered where Mr. Sparks came up with that method. Also thought 27 years was a long time for Taylor to keep messing up his life because he couldn't get over his father's death. I guess it could be believable and of course there wouldn't have been a story without that element. I haven't read many Nicolas Sparks books but the couple I've read now are the same. A damaged man that something tragic happened to, meets the lady who can change his life, only to push her away. Then there is that element of time they are separated only to get back together in the end, naturally. Now I don't mind that scenario once in awhile but hope it's not the norm for all his books. The other one I read was "A Bend in the River" and a lot the same elements of "The Rescue". I am starting "The Guardian" now and will see how it goes. If it turns out the same I may have to move on to a different author. Meanwhile many will like "The Rescue" and I liked it up to the point that Taylor hurt Kyle and then I started to lose interest and skimmed a lot to get towards the end. As a teacher and a grandmother, I have a real aversion to children being hurt physically or emotionally. I was just disappointed in Taylor at that point that he was so wrapped up in his pity party that he would hurt a special needs little boy to that extent. However, I relalize it's the author's choice to make the characters as he wants them. I don't have to like it though. It's probably a good read and those things won't bother a lot of people as it is fiction.
The Rescue.......2007-05-07
At times I could not put this book down. It is great!!!!
Well Done.......2007-04-28
Life has been a struggle for single mother Denise Holton. Her four-year-old son, Kyle, has problems with his speech and she barely makes enough money working in a diner to support the two of them. Denise is petrified when Kyle runs away after she gets into a car accident while swerving to avoid a deer, but he is found because of the persistence of volunteer firefighter Taylor McAden. Taylor befriends the Holtons and soon he and Denise are romantically involved. But Taylor, while always willing to risk his life as a fireman, isn't as willing to risk his heart. Taylor was a young boy when his father died tragically at the age of 36 and Taylor blames himself for the death and has never recovered from his loss. He has a habit of rescuing woman and then when he has gotten close to them, he has pulled away, convinced he doesn't need anyone in his life. This time it looks like things might be different as he grows increasingly closer to Denise and bonds with Kyle, playing catch with him, letting him "drive" his truck, and winning prizes for him at a carnival. But when Taylor realizes how close he has become to both Denise and Kyle, he starts to pull away. When tragedy strikes again and Taylor once more loses someone close to him, he begins to realize he has been lying to himself all these years - he really does need love in his life.
"The Rescue" is a good, if light read. The beginning of the book will keep readers turning the pages, as they will want to find out if Kyle is okay. The love story between Denise and Taylor is well-done and very believable, especially on Taylor's side. All of the characters are believable. Denise is a great heroine, giving up her teaching career so she can devote her time to Kyle. She is a loving mother struggling to make enough money to raise her son, who is having a hard time speaking. The fact that she is not perfect makes her even more believable. There were a couple of times that I wished she was real so I could tell her to let Kyle just be a kid for once instead of spending all those hours trying to get him to talk. Taylor is also very believable - his anguish over his father's death, which he thinks is his fault, is heartbreaking. The supporting characters are also well done. Taylor's mother is the best written of the bunch - she befriends Denise when Kyle disappears knowing she is afraid and needs a friend. The fact that she knew Denise's mother as a child adds an extra dimension to both her and Denise's character. Taylor's best friend Mitch and Mitch's wife Melissa area an important part of the plot line. Author Nicholas Sparks certainly knows how to tell a story that will grab the readers attention although he does have a habit of repeating himself which is unnecessary in a book that is already over 400 pages long. And he relies a bit too much on cliched plot lines - there's a lot of foreshadowing and readers will figure out fairly quickly that there will be another tragedy and who the tragedy will involve. It's a shame because the book is good enough without the hackneyed plot line.
"The Rescue" is a good book to read on a rainy day.

Most Oprah viewers are well aware of Dr. Phil's book Relationship Rescue, which presents a seven-step program for salvaging troubled relationships. McGraw would be the first to tell you that watching Oprah or reading about his program are all fine and good, but if you really want to rescue your relationship, you've got to do the work--which is where this excellent workbook comes in. Loaded with probing questions, exercises, and fill-in-the-blank "self-tests," this four-part book is probably more effective than having a televised session with McGraw on Oprah. (For those who haven't seen the tearful relationship breakthroughs, be assured that McGraw gets results.)
Don't expect to approach this workbook as if you were whizzing through a magazine quiz. Like the relationship that you are trying to revive, this workbook presents a big commitment. (There's no timeline suggested, but judging from the amount of work involved, common sense says to give it at least a month.) McGraw also urges readers to use this workbook in tandem with Relationship Rescue, even though there are similar exercises in both books. The hardcover book is geared toward helping readers identify "what's wrong and begin the process of restoration," he explains. The workbook helps readers begin the self-scrutinizing work that leads to change. Throughout this 287-page workbook, McGraw asks readers to be brutally honest while they examine the beliefs, behaviors, resentments, and expectations that they bring to the relationship. The four-part structure echoes the structure of his original book, starting with "Recover Your Core" and finishing with "Aim for the Best." Some of the exercises seem predictable, such as "list and describe five things that made you fall in love with your partner." Most of the time, though, the requests are profound and suggest a huge impact on a relationship. For example:
- "I am 100 percent accountable for my life, so I will take a responsibility for bringing a win/win spirit to the table day after day. I can show my optimism by..."
- "My partner does not deserve the effort I am about to invest. I deserve it, and our relationship deserves it. I will take the respect I have for our relationship and exercise it toward my partner. Some simple ways I can demonstrate the respect I hope to be shown myself are..."
This workbook won't change your partner or offer you relationship perfection, warns McGraw. The goal is "to reconnect with your own best self" (which is the foundation of McGraw's couples work). Nor is there a big prize upon completing the workbook. Instead, readers will find a personal letter from McGraw, emphasizing what's already been discovered--relationships aren't maintained and nurtured by a one-shot course, but rather by a strong commitment to one's highest self. It may sound anticlimactic, but as so many Oprah guests are likely to attest, it really works. --Gail Hudson

You have to work to make it work.......2007-04-19
Its unfortunate that people buy a book to expect IT to fix the problems they have allowed to get out of hand or self create out of ignoring their spouse/partner. If you want a book to give you ideas, plans and a way to help YOU succeed in taking the positive steps to fixing or creating a better relationship then this IS the book to do it, but again- people tend to have problems with honesty even in a private questionaire and unless you can be honest with youself it wont work, not to mention your just prolonging and continuing the sugar coating, problems dont go away and it isnt fair to your spouse either, you need to give them 100%.
A book isnt going to magically fix anything unless your willing to apply and make changes..
But here is some advise that is free- if you dont want a divorce keep your pants zipped and or your skirt down. Dont lie, be faithful and respectful-COMMUNICATE- we are not mind readers-yet. Do not make excuses for those "late work all nighters" and certainly let your partner know you appreciate them. SEX is like Air--- your not gonna miss until your not getting it, so if you/your partner isnt getting it at home--- they/you are getting it somewhere else. DO NOT confide intimate information or whine to the opposite sex about your partner, its precurser to an affair.
BUY the book and read it, listen to the words-- but lets face it-- once the trust is gone its gone.. You need to earn it back, or they need to be willing to trust you. If you are not happy then make changes dont compund it by being selfish.
Its lousy.......2007-01-09
Did not work for a relationship of marriage with a 1 time affair involved. Book was good to start a fire with though. + Make Dr. Phil rich. I recomend "David DeAngelo" instead. Hes much better program.
A Ruled Note Pad Might Do the Same Thing.......2006-08-27
As long as you have the Relationship Rescue book. He guides you through exercises in the book which makes this a redundant purchase. The book is superlative, and I am sure the workbook will be helpful for some, but don't feel it mandatory. It's more an accessory.
Excellent!.......2006-07-01
I was pleased with the condition of the book along with how fast the book arrived!
Worth the time.......2006-02-23
I checked out the audio book from the library first, Went on a road trip and listened to all 5 CD's. Was convinced that it was smart advise, so bought the workbook to do my homework. Began appying the first chapter's theories in my everyday relationships, and boom! Already am seeing a change in my mate, in response to changes in myself and the way I deal. Had to put it up on the shelf, as I got to busy to continue, but will come back to it to further my "work", especially if we backslide.

Concise and yet packed with detail, Touching the Void, Joe Simpson's harrowing account of near-death in the Peruvian Andes, is a compact tour de force that wrestles with issues of bravery, friendship, physical endurance, the code of the mountains, and the will to live. Simpson dedicates the book to his climbing partner, Simon Yates, and to "those friends who have gone to the mountains and have not returned." What is it that compels certain individuals to willingly seek out the most inhospitable climate on earth? To risk their lives in an attempt to leave footprints where few or none have gone before? Simpson's vivid narrative of a dangerous climbing expedition will convince even the most die-hard couch potato that such pursuits fall within the realm of the sane. As the author struggles ever higher, readers learn of the mountain's awesome power, the beautiful--and sometimes deadly--sheets of blue glacial ice, and the accomplishment of a successful ascent. And then catastrophe: the second half of Touching the Void sees Simpson at his darkest moment. With a smashed, useless leg, he and his partner must struggle down a near-vertical face--and that's only the beginning of their troubles.
Book Description
Joe Simpson and his climbing partner, Simon Yates, had just reached the top of a 21,000-foot peak in the Andes when disaster struck. Simpson plunged off the vertical face of an ice ledge, breaking his leg. In the hours that followed, darkness fell and a blizzard raged as Yates tried to lower his friend to safety. Finally, Yates was forced to cut the rope, moments before he would have been pulled to his own death.
The next three days were an impossibly grueling ordeal for both men. Yates, certain that Simpson was dead, returned to base camp consumed with grief and guilt over abandoning him. Miraculously, Simpson had survived the fall, but crippled, starving, and severely frostbitten was trapped in a deep crevasse. Summoning vast reserves of physical and spiritual strength, Simpson crawled over the cliffs and canyons of the Andes, reaching base camp hours before Yates had planned to leave.
How both men overcame the torments of those harrowing days is an epic tale of fear, suffering, and survival, and a poignant testament to unshakable courage and friendship.

Warning: Ice is slippery.......2007-10-02
Perhaps posting this notice on mountains would prevent exactly the type of incident outlined in this book. If one climbs UP an icy lump of rock, falling back DOWN is certainly one possible outcome. And if there are chasms, yes one will fall into them. Haven't we ever dropped a peanut butter sandwich? Goodness. Anyway, we already HAVE the Discovery Channel. There is simply no need for youngsters to get themselves up to this kind of hijinks, particularly on slippery slopes. Why do you think we use that metaphor? How many books of this sort must I read before the Human Race realizes the outdoors were not meant for us. If we were intended to rush about in the open, why would God have invented the Ritz Carlton. If one must go to areas of natural wonder, one should stay in a hotel like a normal person. Scenery is best viewed from the en-suite television. Remember, there is no room service in nature. And while nature is scenic, it is hell on one's vital organs, not to mention manicures. If one truly wishes to risk life and limb, why not do it for a valid REASON, for heaven's sake. Climbing rocks is the kind of challenge that ants and potato bugs must overcome. Not us, darlings. We are not potato bugs. No, no, no! If one is simply determined to undertake some highly threatening physical activity, fine. But at least make it worthwhile for me. Become my surrogate shopper at the Max Azaria BCBG sample sale downtown, or at the annual Fred Segal sale in Santa Monica. You will have all the danger you crave. Immediate decisions and swift actions are imperative, you will be injured, probably killed. All the thrills of outdoor adventure, but with up to 75% off. If you manage to grab me a pair of gray suede Ferragamo pumps, size 8, the ones with the thin leather piping, at Fred's, lunch is on me, name the place.
Oh, about the book? Well, I DID read some of it, except for parts in the beginning, middle and end. The writer just goes on and on about everything. In a nutshell, they climbed up something covered in ice, they fell down. It was cold. Anyhoo, I don't want to give anything away, but the author DID write the book, so there is your big clue as to the outcome.
Ciao darlings.
Amazing story of survival.......2007-08-14
When two hikers, Joe and Simon set off to climb Sula Grande in South America they had no idea how it would turn out. In the course of the descent Joe is lowered over a cliff by mistake in the gathering clouds. His climbing partner is forced to cut the rope in order for himself not to be dragged over, thus ensuring Joe's death. But Joe does not die. He has a brocken leg and is lodged in a crevace. After houre os harrowing attempts to go up he decides to go down.
This book tells the story of his fascinating survival, his tremendous will to live, his thoughts on death and God, and his realization that only he could get himself free.
An amazing story, one of the most extraordinary survival stories, up their with Alive. A great story of the outdoors that rivals Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster. However it may not be quite as good as the documentary on the same story, Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man's Miraculous Survival.

BORING BORING BORING.......2007-07-29
i am sorry but i was so disappointed with this book! -i read this book after seeing all the great reviews and i do not understand all the hype- i think the only reason there are so many great reviews is that climbers stick together and have a reverence for eachother so perhaps they don't want to "pan" joe simpson's book- but as far as i am concerned, this book was very poorly written, so slow, so boring, way too technical and such a chore to get through- i didn't understand what all the terms meant and even when looking them up, i still couldn't get a clear picture of what was happening to him- even the photos were of no help- if you are not a climber you will have the same problem- and if you are a climber, you will still find it as i described above less the terminology problems- i didn't find it enjoyable at all- i expected to find it rivetting and interesting and heart wrenching but it was none of the above- and his friend simon yates was so despicable in this book that you just can't believe that joe even talks to him let alone includes his version of events in this book and dedicates the book to him? huh?- it just made no sense- but,
if you do want the greatest true adventure survival story EVER WRITTEN then you ABSOLUTELY MUST read "ADRIFT"- it is BY FAR the greatest true survival story ever written- it is superbly written and you don't have to be a sailor to understand his plight- your heart aches and you feel you are there as he literally drifts across the atlantic in a sinking dinghy for 76 days waiting to be rescued- but he realizes no one is coming to rescue him, so therefore, he must save himself- UNBELIEVABLE- he is an amazing man- now this is an amazing story of survival- i am shocked that touching the void was even put to pen to be honest- this may sound unkind but while i was reading it i kept thinking, "why was a book written about this?" -didn't seem worth writing a book over- (sorry joe- glad you are alive though of course)- i encourage you all to skip this one and read "ADRIFT" instead- UPDATE: i decided to rent the movie "touching the void" from the library to see if the movie made for a more interesting story- well yes it did- it wasn't the best adventure survival movie i have ever seen but it was still infinitely better than the book- and it was nice to see the real joe tell the story- he really lets us into his soul i find and one could see how much this experience has affected him- tears were never far from his eyes- i came away liking the guy- you will not get the same feeling from simon yates, however- if you read his excerpts in the book and watch him in the movie, you will see he is a cold person, a friend you wouldn't want to have- a friend who would leave you to die when you needed him- with friends like that who needs enemies? glad you are safe joe! and i must say it was brave of simon to show his face in the movie- at least he is not denying his role (or lack thereof) in this adventure- to you readers, my advice is to watch the movie over the book-
Touching the void-a touching story.......2007-06-01
Joe Simpson, and Simon Yates are truely admirable and courageous people. The bravery Joe Simpson mantained during his difficult situation is amazing, and an attitude to look up to. His frustration was understandable and the fact he made it was somewhat...a miracle.
Simon Yates was called by many a traitor. He cut the rope when (although he wasn't aware of it) Joe Simpson, alive but not so well, was on the recieving end. People think this is disgraceful but if you watch the film, or read the book you will accept why he did it. You'll also find it took more bravery for him to cut the rope, than stay there in the freezing cold, never living to tell the tale.
The rope is, apparently, a representitive of the bond between the climbers, but really it's just a rope.
Hard to put this book down once started........2007-05-29
This book is well written, very interesting to anyone who has been up on a Mountain in South America or elsewhere. I enjoyed reading this book as a recommendation I had from a British climber on our trip to Cotopaxi in Equador.

Good Introduction To Aircraft Rescue And Fire Fighting.......2007-09-24
This text, prepared by the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), is a good introduction to aircraft (and airport) rescue and fire fighting. The book is easy to comprehend, yet is fairly detailed. There is a lot of good information on aircraft-specific fire fighting skills, as well as other relevant sections on issues like airport familiarization (lighting, markings, grid maps, etc.) and aircraft familiarization (engines, electrical systems, composite hazards, etc.)
The book is very strong in dealing with situational awareness issues (e.g. topography and terrain hazards, wind direction, hazardous goods), and is especially good at dealing with different types of apparatus and extinguishing agents (Aqueous Film Forming Foam, Regular Protein Foam, Film Forming Fluroprotein Foam, Purple K, etc.) and their application devices and method (aspirating versus nonaspirating nozzles, portable form proportioners, etc.) Basic skills and assessment techniques are strongly reinforced, and the place of fire fighters in Airport Emergency Plans is thoroughly explained.
The book tends to be a bit repetitive and occasionally tedious, but for someone with interest in aircraft rescue and fire fighting, this is an indispensable text.
