Book Description
The dreamhunting began as a beautiful thing, when Tziga Hame discovered that he could enter the Place and share the dreams he found there with other people. But Tziga Hame has disappeared and Laura, his daughter, knows that the art of projecting dreams has turned sour. On St. Lazarus’s Eve, when elite citizens gather at the Rainbow Opera to experience the sweet dream of Homecoming, Laura, determined to show them the truth, plunges them into the nightmare used to control the convict workers. The event marks the first blow in the battle for control of the Place, the source of dreams. Then, when Laura’s cousin, Rose, uncovers evidence that the government has been building a secret rail line deep into the Place, Laura follows it to find out what lies at its end. As she struggles to counter the government’s sinister plans, a deeper mystery surfaces, a puzzle only Laura can unravel, a puzzle having to do with the very nature of the Place. What is the Place, after all? And what does it want from her?
Inventive and richly imagined, Elizabeth Knox’s dramatic conclusion will satisfy readers – whether or not they’ve read Book One.
Customer Reviews:
The conclusion gives a feeling of mystification.......2007-06-01
On St. Lazarus's Eve, numerous people attend the Rainbow Palace where they look forward to experiencing Homecoming, a favorite dream caught by renowned dreamhunter Grace Tiebold. However, Grace has been feeling anxious due to the recent disappearance of her brother-in-law, Tizga Hame, and how it has affected the Hame-Tiebold family. She arranges to have George Mason, Southland's best Soporif, join her in the presentation and help her fall asleep.
What is supposed to be a refreshing, peaceful dream quickly becomes a terrifying nightmare. The Rainbow Palace and nearby residences of Founderston experience Buried Alive, which conveys the terror convicts face. Amidst the terrible chaos, a mysterious figure flees the dream palace carrying a girl --- Laura Hame.
The Dream Regulatory Body and the Body of Commission begin an intense investigation in which the dreamhunters are questioned and then allowed to go back in the Place to overwrite the terrible master dream. Laura is sequestered in the Temple until it's safe for her once again, while the rest of the family uncover secrets of their own. Rose finds plans for a railway being built into the Place, its purpose unknown. Chorley discovers some startling messages, while Grace tries to understand her family and the society she thought she knew.
There are many great changes to come for the Hame-Tiebold family. Rose and Laura are growing up but taking very different paths in life. Rose is at school and is a debutante, a role that she both relishes and despises. There is also her friendship with Mamie Doran, who, despite her wealthy lifestyle, is lost and unhappy --- partly resulting from her father's growing need to maintain his public image no matter what the cost. Meanwhile, Laura is now a full-time dreamhunter and spends time with her secret companion Nown as she develops feelings for Sandy Mason. Most of all, Laura wants to expose the corrupt politicians responsible for her father's disappearance and possible demise. But at what price?
DREAMQUAKE, the much-anticipated sequel to DREAMHUNTER, follows the two cousins on a path of discovery, and shows how the Place affects the lives of the people who regard it with wonder and suspicion. There are many complex ideas that are revealed and answered throughout the book. Its captivating storylines, along with the descriptive scenery of the Place, satisfy, while the conclusion gives a feeling of mystification long after the final page has been read.

A Fitting End.......2007-03-13
I devoured the first installment of this story, Dreamhunter, and was excited to have discovered a new voice in Elizabeth Knox. Her dialogue is realistic, yet exciting. Her characters are utterly believable even in the most fantastic situations. Dreamquake fulfills the expectations raised by Dreamhunter in an exciting, thought-provoking adventure.
I disagree with the earlier review, in that I liked Nown's fate, and I see the possibility for another story including his character because of how he winds up.
5 stars!!!
Magical.......2007-02-22
The finale to Dreamhunter was well worth the wait, easily fulfilling the promise of the first half.
The book starts with a recap of the events at the end of Dreamhunter, but told from different points of view - a quick and effective way to get readers back into the story (Not that I needed it - this story is unforgettable).
Laura's scheme, based on her father's cryptic letter, is a complete failure, and causes more trouble, alerting the conspirators that they have opposition to deal with.
However, the assistance of older and supposedly wiser heads doesn't seem to help much either, and Laura's family do little more than hinder her.
But her cousin Rose finds some interesting clues, and Laura and her loyal golem Nown head off to investigate - straight into lethal danger.
In the end, everything hangs on the true nature of the Place - what is it for, where do the dreams come from, what brought it into being?
This book has everything - from adolescent angst, magic, romance, fate vs free will, evil politicians, scheming priests and much, much more. The ending isn't quite as good as it could be (the fate of Nown makes no sense at all) but it comes together to a satisfying conclusion.
I thoroughly recommend this book to everyone.

Good Book.......2001-09-24
Descriptive and very helpful, a little dry reading but still very helpful.
Advanced Schutzhund.......2000-06-05
The book was very informative, but I wouldn't suggest that a person without a strong working knowledge of training dogs reads this book untill they become more familar with dog training and the sport of Schutzhund.
A different approach.......2000-05-28
Ivan's and Karen's book was extremely helpful and is a must have. It gives you some problem solving techniques and advices you how to approach most common problems. I especially liked the suggestions on overcoming distraction issues. The different methods described really teach you how to think like the animal, and use it's innate abilities to your advantage. In the end you get a wonderful, obedient world competitor that is happy to do everything you ask.
Precisely what was needed and concisely done........2000-02-11
Training for Schutzhund has been an art passed on by club members. Most of the successful trainers in this sport are not as effective as teachers for the adult human. This book has bridged the gap providing effective communication to the handler on how to communicate effectively with the Schuthund dog.

Customer Reviews:
A wealth of knowledge for those involved in the duet genre.......2002-12-07
Hundreds of composers and what seems to be over a thousand works, most of them obscure. It is a wonderful little handbook which, whenever possible, states also the duration of pieces, publisher, style, difficulty, and any other information you may need to locate the score. There are some major works missing from it, for example George Crumb's Celestial Mechanics, Yvar Mikhashof's arrangement of Conlon Nancarrow's Sonatina, Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole or Lucien Garban's arrangement of his La Valse, Stravinsky's Petroushka or The Rite of Spring (both composed first for this medium and later orchestrated by the composer), John Corigliano's Gazebo Dances. And these are the ones I am aware of, who knows how many others have been overlooked. Nevertheless you have 312 solid pages of works for one piano four hands (not two pianos!) from A-Z. A must for any duo pianist out there.

Book Description
Laura comes from a world similar to our own except for one
difference: it is next to the Place, an unfathomable land that
fosters dreams of every kind and is inaccessible to all but a
select few, the Dreamhunters. These are individuals with special
gifts: the ability to catch larger-than-life dreams and relay them
to audiences in the magnificent dream palace, the Rainbow
Opera. People travel from all around to experience the benefits
of the hunters’ unique visions. Now fifteen-year-old Laura and
her cousin Rose, daughters of Dreamhunters, are eligible to test
themselves at the Place and find out whether they qualify for
the passage. But nothing can prepare them for what they are
about to discover. For within the Place lies a horrific secret kept
hidden by corrupt members of the government. And when
Laura’s father, the man who discovered the Place, disappears,
she realizes that this secret has the power to destroy everyone
she loves . . .
In the midst of a fascinating landscape, Laura’s dreamy
childhood is ending and a nightmare beginning. This rich
novel, filled with beauty, danger, politics, and intrigue, comes to
a powerful crescendo, leaving readers clamoring for Book Two.
Customer Reviews:
YA fiction in the great tradition.......2007-05-20
As an adult with a penchant for YA fiction I am accustomed to a certain tone from these books. Upon reading "Dreamhunter" I found myself having nightmares for a few nights - not surprising given the subject matter. I wondered why one would tell such a story to children. Let me be clear that these books are a work of distopian fiction, a cautionary tale about the destruction of a society through the greed and selfishness of it's rulers. Though not gorey and certainly not horror particularly more savvy readers will definitely find this a disturbing read (it is all done in an extremely subtle way and the most disturbing aspects might be over the heads of many young readers). However, this first book especially is upsetting. As I came to the conclusion of the second volume I understood - these works are decidedly activist in the same tradition as Pullman's "His Dark Materials". Unlike Pullman, Knox is not so much trying to convey a certain theological and philosophical perspective as she has written a rallying cry for word change. Taken in the context of our current world climate - the erosion of civil liberties and the middle class in the United States - it is easy to see that this series is talking about the present day. She could certainly have marketed them as adult books with no changes, but the choice to present "The Dreamhunter Duet" to children first shows remarkable intent. Definitely "His Dark Materials good", strongly recommended.
Don't know what it was..........2007-02-04
Maybe it was because I developed an indifference after the first few chapters, but I couldn't get into this book at all. I didn't care enough for any of the characters, and many times the prose just fell flat for me. I found it difficult to sympathize with Laura Hame, and although Tziga was quite interesting at times, unexpected inconsistencies in his behavior turned me off.
That said, the underlying plot is rather intriguing, and quite original. I'll give it some leeway and three stars, since it might possibly have been me and not the book.
An outstanding fantasy .......2006-09-24
Laura comes from a world that is next to the Place - a land that fosters dreams accessible only by dreamhunters, who have special gifts. Laura and her cousin are daughters of dreamhunters out to test their eligibility for the passage - but their test will prove different, opening worlds and nightmares unimaginable. An outstanding fantasy is rich with the unexpected.

A stunning fantasy that will leave all readers wanting more.......2006-06-01
Laura Hame and Rose Tiebold's 15th birthdays are approaching. While many people their age would be excited about parties and presents, this birthday is different for the two cousins. They are eligible to test themselves at the Place and see if they're qualified to be Dreamhunters. The Place is a vast, extraordinary land where dreams of every kind are only accessible to Dreamhunters. A Dreamhunter is a person who can cross over and catch impressive dreams that can be relayed to other people.
Dreamhunting runs in the cousins' families. Laura's father Tziga and Rose's mother Grace are famous Dreamhunters whose collections of dreams bring large audiences far and wide to experience them at the Rainbow Opera, a famous dream palace. Despite the fame and wealth, dreamhunting is not always a glamorous occupation, and oftentimes a dreamhunter is on a different schedule from that of their own family. On many occasions, Grace's husband Chorley is the primary caretaker of the Hame-Tiebold household.
When it is the girls' turn to try, they each have different expectations. Laura feels anxious while Rose hopes to be a famous dreamhunter like her mother. When the day arrives, both are surprised at the results. Rose doesn't cross to the Place, but Laura does. However, for Laura the occasion is bittersweet; instead of having a pleasant dream called the Wild River, she has a nightmare, and her father has mysteriously disappeared after going on an official job for the government.
The family is baffled by the Dream Regulatory Body's explanation and doesn't understand why Tziga would decide to enter the Place without telling his family. Meanwhile, strange events have been occurring that defy explanation. Laura and Rose begin their own investigation, but when Laura continues having unusual dreams and discovers a mysterious letter from her father in the Place, it becomes apparent that there's a far bigger and deadlier secret involving corrupt government officials and their families that no one ever could have dreamed.
Set in the beginning of 20th-century Australia, DREAMHUNTER tells the story of a family whose members make surprising discoveries both in and beyond their world, while changing within themselves. A stunning fantasy set in a world of high society, politics and intrigue, it is destined to be a classic that readers anxiously will want to see continue.

Elegantly awesome book!.......2006-05-11
"Dreamhunter", wow it sounds so mysterious. Elizabeth Knox has really outdone herself. She wrote a 365 page book (hardcover), and made it sound like a fairytale written in perfect english.
Laura Hame's father, Tziga Hame, is a famous dreamhunter. He takes dreams from a magical place called the "Place" and performs them to people to either entertain them, or heal them. There are very few dreamhunters, each with their own special talents. However, not all is as it seems. Laura must learn the truth about her father when he disappears, and what she learns could change the course of the future.
Through magic, fiction, and politics, Elizabeth Knox writes an elegant fantasy that keeps READERS ENTERTAINED! READ IT!
