Brilliant.......2007-07-31
Like some of the other reviewers I discovered Janet Frame through the movie,'An Angel at my Table," and I knew I had to read something of hers.
I started with her autobiography, and I'm so glad that I did.
This is perhaps the finest piece of writing, bar none, fiction or non-fiction that I have ever read. I think Frame is a genius, she should be awarded every prize for literature in the world. This is a funny thing to say about such a humble woman who endured so much to become one of the greatest writers the world has ever known.
I was completely bowled over, enthralled, by her recounting of her life. Her word pictures, her recollections of places and things are incredible. I don't know another writer who has as fine a capacity for detail and description. The book is utterly lyrical as she weaves a painful, at times, story through decades of her life. I could not put this book down at times and I grieved when I had finished it. Stories like hers are instructional and give us all a reason to go on living. I sometimes wonder, I'm a memoirist myself, but a baby compared to Frame, how did she do it? It may be crazy to think this but I wonder if those numerous shock treatments she endured rearranged her brain in some magical fashion and gave her the capacity to be a superwoman writer? The line between genius and insanity is permeable. I think writers, for good and ill, are exquisitely fine-tuned, sensitive people. Unfortunately some of them are so beyond ordinary human beings they can't survive living in the world, but what they have left us is priceless as we make our own life journeys. Frame has allowed millions of readers, I hope, to accompany her on her challenging journey through life and she shows how she coped with fate and a set of circumstances given her courageously, copiously, and heart breakingly. I am in awe of her acheivement.
She is a writers writer. Her musings on art and the capacity of the imagination are among the finest I have ever read. She is an inspiration to artists everywhere.
Frame saves herself and achieves, in spite of all!.......2007-07-03
I came to this book by way of the movie "An Angel at My Table" [which was fairly true to the book]. I had never heard of Janet Frame, and was so intrigued by the film that I knew I had to read her autobiography. The book introduces you to her impoverished life in New Zealand [she was born in 1924], and includes about two dozen pages of photos of Janet's family [it was wonderful putting the real faces to the ones we were introduced to in the movie]. From the epilepsy of her brother, the drownings of her two sisters, her own mental breakdown in college [which was erroneously diagnosed as schizophrenia], you understand how all of her traumas and perceptions are incorporated later into her writing career. She overcomes daunting events and social alienation to become a novelist, poet, and short-story author.
I have continued to read more of her writings.
Excellent Autobiography.......2007-01-06
I do not know of any author who can retain so much authencity in his writing and yet produce such beautiful and imaginative prose, other than Janet Frame.
Her excellent autobiography is definitely worth a reading and offers an insight to her other works which are, at times, more experimental and harder to grasp. I have seen the film adaptation but this book has even more to offer: the heartfelt descriptions of the family members, some beautifully written passages which could hardly be translated into film, the 24 pages of delightful photos of Frame and her family...etc.
Excellent.
She Gives Us Good Reason To Write.......2005-01-09
Janet Frame was an amazing woman. She died on Jan 30, 2004. I had this book on my 'need to read' shelf when I read an obituary in the NY Times about her death at age 79. She endured so much and wrote so keenly. She was thought to be a schizophrenic and wrote about her periods of madness in mental institutions. This autobiography was fascinating for me. There is a gentleness and everlasting patience about her that will make anyone like her. If you want a real treat...find the film AN ANGEL AT MY TABLE (from 1990) that Jane Campion (famous for the film THE PIANO) to complement the book. If only I could have met this woman. I would have loved to have tea and crumpets with her.
To The Is-Land.......2003-04-19
To forever capture the past in the present - to be always telling the tale, towards the destination and yet always on the go, postponing the end of self-perception and portrayal: one does not write an autobiography about what one gained but what one lost. Janet Frame shows an intense desire (and flair) in retaining her possessions - a place, an object, a thought, an emotion, a fragment of memories - in writing. It deals with loss and trauma in an honest, realistic, and fairly subdued manner, making it more geniune than a lot of best-selling memoirs. Frame has been described as an ego-centric writer in her fiction - always writing about and examining herself - but in her autobiography she reminds us of existential moments when one detaches from one's self and looks at the world: the unnamable sadness that we do and do not experience. The imagery here is also a lot richer than most autobiographies - if you enjoy down-to-earth and yet beautiful and touching stories, this is something you should read.

Simple, Nutritious, and EASY!!!.......2007-04-12
My husband and I are vegetarians, but not vegans. I decided to buy this recipe book anyway, knowing I could always add eggs and dairy. Great decision! I'm an accomplished cook, but have reached the point in life where I no longer want to spend hours in the kitchen (I'm 67) and where easy prep and healthy meals are my chief interests. This is now my #1, go-to cookbook. I glance through it in the mornings, assess my larder (and Stepaniak includes a comprehensive list of things to have on hand), and plan the evening's meal. After years of trying to simplify complicated recipes, or make adjustments in meals planned for omnivores, I'm thoroughly delighted to have tumbled onto this precious cookbook. Now I'm going to buy another of her books, DELICIOUS FOOD FOR A HEALTHY HEART, confident I can adjust the portions for two servings.
Great for 2 and as your family grows.......2005-11-20
I have had this cookbook for years. It has served my wife and I well, and now that we have two young sons, it continues to serve us well. The recipes make just the right amount, but it is so easy to double recipes to good effect.
My wife, who is not vegan, often asks me to make the French Toast, and my sons really like the Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes. I really like the Corn & Potato Chowder, being from the midwest, but one of our favorite comfort foods is the recipe for Baked Macaroni & Vegetable Casseroles. We always double the recipe so that we have leftovers, and we add the "chicken" seitan I make from the Homemade Seitan recipe. The Lentil, Mushroom & Macaroni Stew is also excellent.
I don't care for the tempeh recipes, so I just substitute something else. The only recipe that I can remember not liking was the Breaded Seitan Nuggets.
My copy has a "Special Lay-Flat Binding" which I think is really smart design. It ensures that I'm always pulling this cookbook down off the shelf and using it, because it's so practical. I liked this book so much I bought the same author's "Vegan Vittles."
a good very basic little cookbook to get you up and running.......2005-09-25
This cookbook is great because it has all the things you would want in a little cookbook. That being:
1) Easy veggie-based recipes with ingredients easy to find or that you already have, for the most part. Seitan and nutritional yeast aside, you can find everything else easily.
2) Calorie and nutritional information breakdown
3) Plenty of tips for each recipe
4) A blurb on each recipe that gives good information and gives you the "feel" of the recipe and it's use.
5) Small quantities. Seriously, how many people need to make 6 servings of everything!?!?!
6) Esp. good for getting kids to eat healty. This book is really all about that.
This book can save you money because you don't need to buy too many ingredients that you don't end up using, and the author suggests ways to use the rest of what you have in another recipe.
This cookbook is made by a person who eats the things she writes about. I also like that she has a slightly Polish/Russian slant in some of the dishes. I have another book, 1001 Low-fat Vegetarian Recipes, and practically everything in there has some "southwestern" bent. That can get annoying. There are plenty of types of vegetarian dishes in every culture, and it's nice to see a recipe, for instance, that quickly gets you close to the taste of pierogis (if not the shape), without all the fuss.
I'm not actually vegan, but I really like and tend to use cookbooks that don't rely on meat in every freakin' entree, and which use vegetable protein.
This book is also good for just simple brainstorming on using what you've got. A basic staple book to refer to when you you don't think you have anything to eat. It's not anywhere near gourmet in style, but will at least jar your brain to think vegan about your food choices.
Great for Couples.......2005-08-23
I wouldn't say this is the most exciting cookbook I own, but we really seem to use it a lot. It really is very handy if you are cooking for two or one. A word of advice though; if you're cooking for two people and one has a big appetite like my boyfriend, you may find you need to make a little extra.
Great for small families!.......2004-08-12
I have many of Jo's books, but use this one the most lately, now that it's just the 2 of us at home. The recipes are simple, use ingredients I always have on hand, but most of all, are *very* tasty and delicious. I bought a second copy and gave it to my son to take to college with him, that's how great these recipes are!
I recommend this for any vegan single or couple.
Book Description
A happy, successful, God-pleasing life comes in a variety of packages. ''And contrary to what our churches, married friends, society, and nosy Aunt Marge may tell us, that includes singleness.'' In this up-front book packed with girl talk and plenty of pep, Camerin Courtney reveals how she transformed from a self-conscious single girl to an I-am-single-hear-me-roar woman. While she admits that she still has ''singleness stinks'' days, Courtney doesn't indulge in pity parties or offer readers a guide on finding Mr. Right. Table for One is, instead, an optimistic, up-beat look at the many emotions, expectations, joys, frustrations, and privileges of singleness. It shows how to dive into God's plan and purposes for this phase of life-whether it lasts for four years or forever. Fun and encouraging sidebars sprinkle the text, covering everything from must-see movies to a list of great things about singleness (i.e., ''If we buy floral sheets, no one complains.'') This savvy, girlfriend-to-girlfriend guide to singleness will delight and inspire single women. It offers great insight for friends, families, and church leaders who want to encourage them as well.

Wonderful & Inspiring.......2007-08-06
I thought this was wonderful book. It is now going down as one of my all time favorites. Several of her stories me laugh so much I though my neighbors were going to think I had lost my mind & then other comments made me cry at the beautiful realization that God really doesn't care about how we look, He says we are "beautifully & wonderfully made." I am not one who has a deep desire for marriage or children but I do have those, as she calls them, "singleness sucks days." It is always comforting to know I'm not the only one going through these issues & anxieties. Who of us hasn't gone to church & been the only one in our row while surrounded by couples & families & felt like everyone around us was wandering what is wrong with that girl and just because you haven't had a date in awhile doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with you & it isn't really as rare as you may feel it is at times. This book encourages singles to get out there & start living. Don't waste this time you have been given. Enjoy life now; there are no guarantees for our future.
Hilarious! .......2007-03-17
This was a wonderful book! Camerin Courtney is honest and down to earth. She doesn't "sugar coat" things and you can really relate to what she is saying. It is like you are having a chat with your girlfriends! I highly recommend this book.
Fantastic!.......2007-01-23
I loved this book because it didn't seem too preachy and yet still upheld Christian values. It embraced the positive aspects of being single rather than the poor-me syndrome.
So good, I wish I'd written it........2006-12-16
Camerin Courtney has a way of writing that just draws you in. I don't know what book One Star Man below was reading, but found her completely honest. There are times when I resent being single, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you remember Who you need to run back to.
Jesus gave us all of our emotions, and He understands our struggles. I read this book at lightspeed because it was speaking so strongly to my life. Because it was borrowed I decided to get my own copy so I could read it again.
"Table For One" is terrific, and I encourage everyone who occasionally feels like singleness stinks to get into its pages. You won't be sorry.
I am single HEAR ME WHINE!.......2006-11-28
I'm a 34 year old single Christian woman and out of all the "singles" books I've read, this has to be the worst. The author, Camerin Courtney, seems to resent the fact that God has chosen for her to be single and celibate at this time. Such statements such as referring to the Scriptures that to me bring comfort and encouragement (Such as Isaiah 54:5 - "Your Maker is your husband.") as a "booby prize" and her belief that the only way to be a Proverbs 31 woman is to be married with kids is ridiculous.
When I read this book , here's what I expected:
1. I expected such pertinent issues such as career and financial stability for a single woman to be addressed. All she talked about was her single friend who bought a house, but never gave any practical steps for living well financially without pining for Mr. Right to come and rescue this poor helpless female from all her financial difficulties.
2. I expected true sexual temptation issues to be addressed. All that was discussed was her need for a new bed (a PERSONAL problem) and a single friend who admitted she struggled with sexual temptation. Her solution? Her version of "tea and sympathy:" Coffee houses and novels! Whoopie, that's really going to help when the hormone fairy shows up!
3. I expected this book to give singles BIBLICAL insight into the single life and how to live it, not a whining, grasping, tome by an author who can't stop mourning over her breakup with her last boyfriend long enough to really enjoy a life totally devoted to Jesus Christ.
I am shamefully disappointed with this book. Not everyone is called to be married. Even if one feels that God is calling her to be a wife and mother, she doesn't need to spend every waking hour fantasizing about her wedding day, and refusing to live the life Jesus Christ shed His blood to give her until MR. RIGHT shows up, forgetting that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Mr. Right. Miss Courtney's book makes all single Christian females look shallow, bitter, helpless, and unspiritual. I do not recommend this book; it will get on your nerves.

Few people have stayed in one place as long as the Basque people have stayed in Basque Country, which spreads from northern Spain across the Pyrenees into France and stretches out to the sea. Basque Country has remained intact from the time of cave paintings to today. The Basque language is a language unlike any other; even Basque DNA is different from any other European DNA. So it should come as no surprise that the food of Basque Country, while similar to what is found in other parts of Spain and France, is distinct as to its place and people of origin. Restaurant owner and chef Teresa Barrenechea invites one and all to come sit at the Basque table and learn while enjoying.
Though nueva cocina has invaded Basque cooking, Barrenechea has intentionally left it aside for another book. She cleaves to tradition in The Basque Table, to the pinchos (like tapas), first courses, and main courses that make up the traditional meal served in Basque homes. It is a deceptively simple cuisine, something of a tightrope act, that demands of any cook the ability to select the best possible ingredients. When, in a dish like Chuletitas de Cordero (grilled lamb chops), you are only working with the chops, olive oil, garlic, flat-leaf parsley, and salt, there's no place to hide. And yet, when everything is exemplary and the chops come off the grill at the perfect moment, the effect in the mouth and in the heart and soul of any diner will defy description. A tough kind of simple, in other words.
A fierce pride shows in Barrenechea's recipe descriptions and food notes. She holds herself to the highest cultural standard. What she aims for and achieves is a replication in print, with an American kitchen in mind, of exactly how a certain dish should taste to the Basque palate.
So take heart in dishes like sweetbreads with garlic and parsley, crayfish in hot sauce, mushrooms with scrambled eggs, white bean stew, roasted fresh ham, chicken Basque style, fresh cod with red and black sauces, grilled prawns, and trout Navarra-style. You may be cooking at home, but you'll be sitting and eating at a Basque table. And there's no other table quite like it. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
In Europe, the Basques are known for their creativity in the kitchen and their long-enduring culinary heritage. In the Spanish Basque country itself, food and eating are the center of everyday life and the focus of endless conversation. Basque women lovingly pass on their cooking techniques to daughters and granddaughters, and Basque men, who belong to traditional cooking clubs called txokos, themselves enjoy lingering over stove and table.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best cookbooks I've bought in a long time!!.......2007-03-20
This is without a doubt one of the best cookbooks in my collection. At the risk of sounding cliche, I have to say that every single recipe in it that I have tried has been a mouthwatering success ~ and the first week I owned it I tore through at least one recipe a night. If you're interested in traditional Spanish / Basque cuisine, as well as the culture behind it, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it!
Very Good Colection of Regional Recipes........2006-06-16
`The Basque Table, Passionate Home Cooking from Spain's Most Celebrated Cuisine' by restauranteur / author, Teresa Barrenechea, with Mary Goodbody, is different from most of the best known studies of regional European (especially French, Italian, and Spanish) cuisines written primarily by (except for Paula Wolfert) culinary journalists such as Coleman Andrews (Catalonia, Spain; Riviera, France and Italy), Arthur Schwartz (Campagnia / Naples, Italy), Lynne Rosetto Kaspar (Emilia-Romagna, Italy), and Fred Plotkin (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy). And, almost all of these authors, especially Andrews and Schwartz, give very detailed little histories of their subject regions. They also take an analytical approach to their subject, spending much time on the region's `terroir'. They also happen to concentrate on restaurants as sources, since, as Andrews states, these are much more accessible.
Barrenechea's approach is different in almost every major aspect. She is a professional cook, yet her recipes are specifically drawn (see subtitle) from `home cooking'. In this way, she is most like Wolfert; however, she is not on the same level as a scholar as Wolfert, as she offers us few historical or analytical insights into the cuisine of her home region, the three provinces in the Northeast corner of Spain, east of Galacia and west of Navarre, and North of Castile. While this is the home of one of Spain's four national languages (per Andrews), and while the Basque region has a long history of being in semi-permanent revolt against the government in Madrid, Barrenechea tells us nothing of this. The most real local color we get is from an adoration of the new Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, the capitol of the Basque region.
The first thing which struck me about the recipes in this book is that when compared to, for example, Coleman Andrews recipes for similar dishes, such as the famous `tortilla Espagnole' (potato frittata), Ms. Barrenechea's recipe was more detailed and seemed far tastier, as she includes onion which Andrews leaves out (per Catalan practice!). Unlike the very analytical approach, the book is organized in a very traditional fashion, by the three courses in the typical Basque midday and evening meal. This makes the book much more useful if you happen to be of Basque descent, and you wish to emulate the foods of your homeland.
The next thing I notice is that Ms. Barrenechea does a lot of drawing outside the lines. Many of her recipes are unflinchingly attributed to regions outside the Basque area, especially, southern France, Navarre, Galacia, and Castile. This casts serious doubt on the claim that Basque home cooking is `Spain's Most Celebrated Cuisine'. I suspect that at least three other regions, Andalusia, home of Sherry and Tapas, Valencia, home of paella and rice growing, and Catalonia, home of Spain's most famous restaurateurs, can lay claim to being Spain's answer to Italy's Tuscany or France's Burgundy region.
The most interesting generalization about Basque cooking is that it has its own special twist on the notion of `tapas'. Where most of Spain uses these snacks as edible lids on their sherry glasses, the Basques call their bar food `pinchos' and prefer to nosh on them from skewers. Even the ubiquitous `tortilla Espagnole' isn't sliced in wine glass sized wedges, its sliced into cubes and threaded onto the skewers. The second most interesting generalization is that the meat of choice to Basques is BEEF! This makes the book a welcome choice to American beef lovers who want to dabble in an authentic European cuisine. Unfortunately, Ms. Barrenechea does little to explain how a region surrounded by French and Spanish centers of pork culture would adopt a bovine cuisine. That is not to say there are no other animal proteins present. The Basque cuisine is as much in love with game dishes as virtually every other provincial region in Europe. And, both lamb and pork are present aplenty.
After having gotten used to Coleman Andrews' giving us names of dishes in both Catalan and Castilian (our high school Spanish), I am just a bit disappointed that Ms. Barrenechea gives us only the names in Castilian.
Oddly, there are no recipes for bread or noodles. There are also few rice dishes, with no comment about this fact. There are a fair number of dishes which use bread, so from where does this bread come? This is not Paris, with a boulangerie on every street corner. This is another little absence that has me consider this just another cookbook and not a serious study of a regional cuisine. One can learn more about what distinguishes Basque cooking from the rest of Spain from Penelope Casas' book, `Delicioso!', which calls the Basque and Galician lands the `Region of the Sauces'.
For anyone who wishes to cook Basque, this is an excellent and authentic source of recipes, but it is not a `study' of the Basque cuisine.
An impressive collection of master-chef level recipes.......2002-11-05
The Basque Table: Passionate Home Cooking From One Of Europe's Great Regional Cuisines is an impressive collection of master-chef level recipes compiled by Teresa Barrenechea and arranged with the assistance of Mary Goodbody. Basque cuisine is an amalgam of diverse culinary influences including Tuscan, Sicilian, Burgundian, Provencal, and Spanish. From Pincho de Bonito Picante (Spicy Tuna Pinchos); Txangurro Donostiarra (Spider Crabs Donostia-Style); and Solomillo de Buey con Pimientos Rojos (Grilled Filet Mignon with Roasted Red Peppers); to Codornices in Salsa de Chocolate (Quails in Chocolate Sauce); Trucha a la Navarra (Trout Navarra-Style); and Higosy Brebas con Natillas (Figs with Natillas), The Basque Table offers exotic, palate pleasing dishes that are deliberately designed and presented so as to be thoroughly "kitchen cook friendly".
An excellent overview of Basque culinary tradition.......2002-05-26
"The Basque Table" author Teresa Barrenechea asserts that the Basques are even more enamored of food and cooking than the French. There is a strong seafood tradition here, as well as a hearty embrace of meat. A recipe for roast suckling pig is given, not to mention recipes for oxtails, braised rabbit, venison, and sundry organ meats. I didn't happen to have a suckling pig handy, but the pinchos (like Spanish tapas) I made from these recipes were yummy.
Co-author Mary Goodbody is, as I understand it, adept at putting non-American cookbooks into American terms for ease of use. If that was her job here, she did it superbly. There's nothing the average (or even slightly less than average) American cook can't try in "The Basque Table."
As for complaints that the book shows too much Spanish influence, all I can say is get out your globe and take a look. The Basques live wedged between Spain and France so it's entirely natural that their cuisine would be heavily influenced by those two countries. The beauty of the Basque cuisine is that it plucks what it likes from Spanish and French cooking and makes it wholly Basque.
NOT ALL AUTHENTIC BASQUE RECIPES.......2001-09-11
I bought this book when it first came out and was so happy to see a book on Basque cooking (there are so few written in English) and I was also influenced by all the 5 star reviews on this site. Well, after reading it carefully and preparing several recipes I feel let down. Not all the recipes are authentic Basque dishes - many are traditional Spanish dishes. Several recipes were quite bland and I can only imagine that you'd have to import the ingredients from the Basque country in order to get the results that Ms. Barrenechea describes. I am very dissapointed in this book and can not recommend it.

The book does unfortunately not differentiate between the forms the calories are delivered; fat / protein / carbs !

I have had this book for over three years now and whenever I have needed to refer to it it has done its job. I can only tell you that if you are on or going on a diet this is the book to have. I have gone on a diet three different times and each time with the aid of this book to help me keep things on track. I lost fifty pounds the first time took a breather but maintained my weight loss and lost fifty more the second time and then took a breather and just maintained again now I am on the last leg of my goal weight and am finding it as easy as ever to handle. Thank you Jean Carper for being there!
Disappointment.......1999-06-04
I should have looked at the last printing date.Perhaps in 1994, it was useful, but it is no longer necessary to have brand names listed in a separate book. For several years now, each item is labeled quite clearly. There were 20 useful pages of fast food items, but other than that, nothing.
