Studying Artaud is one way of taking a deep dive off into the realm of the unknown. His struggle to fully comprehend and describe lucidly his thought process and the clockwork of his soul; his obsessive desire and drive to break beyond the mundane level of median psycological theatre to rediscover the fiery roots and potent magic of the theatre event; and his visionary words---all of these combine to give us a man who was deep, profound and troubled---hence, utterly human, and truly inspirational to any theatre artist or artist in general. This translation of some of his most essential writings is essential to anyone who wishes to study the avant garde theatre. His influence is at times lucid and clearly defined; at other times, one sees that the myth of Artaud has distorted what the actual man wanted and worked for. In dealing with any artist who has created such a controversy (in his own time as well as in our time), one has to approach his work with the discipline of a tightrope walker. And Sontag's work provides the researcher with a straight, keen and powerful translation. This isn't a book that you read from cover to cover. Find a subject that interests you. Then another. And then another. Soon you'll find yourself caught in his web of genius. His madness came from his endless spring of sanity that could no longer hold up under the insanity of the world he lived in. Genius suffers. He suffered too much. Years ago I saw a one man play "Artaud's Project" in Chicago. Best piece of theatre I've ever seen. This was my introduction to Artaud. This book captures this brilliant lunatic's crystal clear vision and pain. His letters are prehaps the highlight of this collection. This book is not for the masses, though, I wish it were. So much insanity and ignorance could be wiped out in a single stroke if people understood this man. Of course the sane appear to be insane in an insane world. If any of what I've said makes the least bit of sense to you this book is for you!
Artaud: what and where and how were you thinking?.......2000-06-30
Selected Writings isn't an easy read. I jumped around a lot. This stuff is the most intense stuff I've ever come across. Artaud is one of the most important writers to rationalise beyond logic. His ideas on Van Gogh prove, beyond doubt, that his sense of aesthetics was far more acute than his contemporaries. They always said weird stuff about Neitszche, how he was more 'in touch with himself' than other writers or, indeed, society at large. But Artaud explodes that idea, since he continually toys with his own sense of himself to the extreme. Reading Artaud for prolonged periods is like going beyond this (his) sense of self to another place, something completely new and agonizing. His ideas abouty the theatre are quite well established but there is other stuff here. The poems, monologues and just the sheer variety of 'inner scenarios' at play here really astounds you. 'To have done with the judgement of God' must be the most extreme form of self expressed mental torture around! (incidentally, am I correct in thinking there is a recording of this piece knockin' around?) Anyways, please take a slice of the insanity, you never know where it will lead you...
Full of Sympathy for Van Gogh.......2000-05-24
This book offers selections on a much broader range of interests than my own. Understanding the nature of deep empathy seems easiest to me in the 1947 work, "Van Gogh, the Man Suicided by Society" on pages 481 to 512. Artaud only lived from 1896 to 1948, but he seemed to be strangely affected by the coronation of Heliogabalus which began in the year 217. Artaud was not reading the history of events lightly when he reported "that the historians begin to go mad with rage." (p.317) Artaud was on the side of the emperor who picked his victims from among the aristocrats in "a kind of superior anarchy" which "runs from jewel to jewel, from outburst to outburst, from form to form, and from flame to flame, as if he were running from soul to soul in a mysterious interior odyssey which no one after him ever repeated." (p. 329) Strangely enough, this seems very modern to me, approaching what is now considered the height of entertainment.
Essential!.......1999-12-22
Artaud is more pertinant to today's world and the battle for sanity in an insane world than any other writer save William Burroughs. As Poe, Rimbaud,Lautreamont and De Nerval were influentual to generations of writers decades after their work; so does Artaud promise to be the next great muse of the new. This book is for anyone who is interested in the most intrigueing of experimental literature.

Not enough McQueen.......2006-07-17
Upon reading the reviews for this book, I was prepared for the extensive information, history, and background of Le Mans. But, I purchased the book because I was a fan of Steve McQueen. I realized for me there was too much info about Le Mans, before it got to the actual parts of the shooting of the movie. I still haven't finished the book and will continue to plow through it.

One of my favorite automotive films of all times is Le Mans. Not only is the race itself an epic, but the making of the film Le Mans was also an epic in and of itself. Steve McQueen was responsible for it from start to finish. It was a labor of love for him. But the movie was not well received by the critics... they felt there was too little dialog and very little plot.
For automotive enthusiasts, it's a masterful and unique depiction of the famous event - you'll feel as though you were there because of the very well done in-car sequences. I consider this film as a must-see for all enthusiasts.
This books covers the life and filmography of Steve McQueen as background. The main focus, however, is on the film itself - and the book offers an incredibly detailed view of the making of the film. You'll rarely see this level of detail about any film, much less an automotive racing film! It's surprising that this level of memory even still exists.
And, of course, if you are ever going to go to the Le Mans race itself, this book would be excellent background reading.

This book is for anyone that likes Steve McQueen, vintage sports car racing, or the movie Le Mans. Of course there's everything there is to know about the movie itself, but there's also a Steve McQueen bio, a history of that era's race cars, AND a history of the Le Mans race too! It's a big book that takes a while to read and once you're done with it, you're gonna want to read it again.

I'm not a huge Steve McQueen fan but love his LeMans film. I've watched it loads of times and every time I'm more hooked. I've just finished reading the book and looking forward to watching the film again as I know the experience will be even better. The information about the filming and McQueen himself shows the passion and desire for realism with which it was made. It took me a while to get round to getting the book but as a huge fan of the film I'm really glad I bought it.
Three books in one, all superb!.......2001-08-08
OK, I was half way to enjoying this book before I opened the cover...
1) I'm a big motorsports and Le Mans fan, having been fortunate enough to attend the 1999 and 2001 races so far.
2) I loved the film Le Mans.
But the book certainly got me through the other 50%...
What you get in this book is a fabulous scene setting of the history and significance of '24 Heures Du Mans', which is critical to show the importance of the event to Steve McQueen when he was preparing for and making the film - this was definitely a labour of love.
Also there is a brief but by no means lightweight biography of the man himself, again helping to build up an image of the actual person who was making the movie.
Then, in meticulous detail, you get the story of the build up, preparation and filming of 'Le Mans', with plenty of interesting anecdotes and events, particularly on how the fantastic crash sequences were filmed.
In my opinion you will enjoy this book if any of the below apply:
You are a motorsport fan with an interest in the history of the sport.
You are a Steve McQueen fan.
You enjoyed the movie and want to know how it was made.
If you fit into two or all three categories you will definitely be on to a winner!

You won't want to put this book down!.......2003-04-28
Extremely well written, I really enjoy reading this book very much. The subject matter is no doubt fascinating, and the author, Mr. Neupert has done a wonderful job in presenting the history of the French New Wave Cinema. Not only does the author include a comprehensive political, cultural and commercial development that lead to the phenomenon, he also manages to present each influential New Wave directors, actors/actresses along with their important works in great detail. The book includes movie story lines in such detail that even if you have not seen the movie, you will appreciate and understand what the author is trying to convey. The author discusses issues on techniques, budgets and distributorship in French cinemas. Most interestingly, pictures from films discussed are liberally peppered throughout the book.
Mr. Neupert's writing style is greatly commendable. The words are straightforward and full of good information it's such a pleasure to read his book. I especially enjoy the title description Mr. Neupert gives for each of the directors. I feel that he's very accurate in describing Chabrol as "the one launching the wave", Varda's success for her "elegance realism" and my favorite Truffaut as "the wave's ringleader".
For a long time, I have always been in love with movies by Rohmer, Godard, Truffaut among others without exactly knowing the reason why. After reading this book, I understand why. The French New Wave Cinema is a complex phenomenon that is impossible to be understood without understanding the political, cultural, commercial as well as psychological (personality) landscapes of Europe/people during that era. If you love watching films by great directors like Truffaut, Rohmer, Chabrol and others, you should read this book. It's highly recommended.

It could be better..........2005-03-11
To be perfectly honest, this book helped to reinvigorate an interest in Difference and Repetition, a book that I had formerly passed over because on first read I found the contents inaccessible, at least at the time. And - in all fairness - Williams' book offers a number of hints that helped me to understand Deleuze's magnum opus. But that is really all this book has to offer: hints. As one reviewer pointed out, it can work to Williams' detriment that he insists on keeping a constant dialogue with analytical philosophy. I would go one step further and say that Williams' habit of repeating the same complaints which would-be analytical philosophers might raise, and always deferring any lucid answer to these questions, borders on tedium. This is not the only thing that is tedious about this work, as one quickly becomes aware after sampling just a bit of the prose. For instance, Williams often interrupts his train of thought with bizarre and unhelpful remarks (e.g. "Who are you stranger? What reasons brought you here?").
If you're looking for a clarification of Deleuze's chef d'oeuvre, this book will help to some degree. If you don't feel like weeding through the tedium of "Gilles Deleuze's Difference and Repetition" I recommend looking elsewhere - Manuel Delanda's "Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy" is a nice alternative.
Probably as good as it's going to get.......2004-05-11
For everyone frustrated and defeated by Deleuze's masterwork, you now have before you a way to tame the beast in the form of this strange little book. Williams is pretty good on most points, and he does his darnedest to clarify D&R without caricaturing it. I think he succeeds, and this despite the fact that I would never read, or recommend that someone read, Deleuze's work as he has done. By which I mean: more or less in constant dialogue with the so-called analytic tradition. Williams not only develops Deleuze's ideas along those lines, but builds a more or less perpetual opposition to Deleuze by posing the most likely objections from the analytic camp. In the end, Deleuze wins--as well he should in a book on a book containing all the reasons why Deleuze thought he won--but, I just kept feeling the question pressing...at what cost? Might it not be more encumbent upon us left the task of making good on Deleuze's legacy to resist fusing that legacy and judging it in tandem with a tradition that he always sought to distance himself from? I think so, but as I am not master of all things, I'll go ahead and recommend this book on the strength of what it does quite capably: give a clear and sustained account of the principles underlying D&R; approach the work in a critical spirit that never reverts into blind attack or adulation; and, most importantly for me, keeps it concise, not getting lost in the infinite texture and detail of the work, and sticking to the "big" points. After all, this is an introduction to a great work of philosophy and not a key to scripture, and Williams does us all a great service by leaving most of the work up to us---he just ensures that we can begin to read the thing!!!

Love French Movies... but where to start?.......2003-02-18
Knowing some French movies, that's not give you the spirit of it. Even if you really enjoy French movies, and that's my case. Remi Lanzoni's book gives me a sense of why I have that strong feeling for French movies. Like most of us, I have in mind a good picture of Hollywood film makers. Therefore, I can enjoy Scorsese's movies because I saw Billy Wilder's movies previously.
Thank to that book, I appreciate more "Amélie Poulain" now because I know what was there before: like Renoir's movies or why French movies have so touching characters.
Lanzoni's book is an enter in what the French secretly keep out of reach of Hollywood film producers: the recipe of a century of success...

"French Cinema: From Its Beginnings to the Present" represents a remarkable contribution in the field of film studies. Although more stills would have enhanced undoubtedly the visual content of the text, this book remains a great overview of French films.
A great book of film studies.......2002-11-23
This book on French cinema is a very important book. It really offers the reader a unique and splendid overview of one hundred years of French cinema, which influenced American movies as well as many other national cinemas. Rémi Fournier Lanzoni organized its narrative structure chronologically and provided at the beginning of each chapter a concise but valuable historical retrospective. Most likely one of the best books on the history of French filmmaking.

A coffee-table book on the Nouvelle Vague (or New Wave) filmmakers might be considered a contradiction in terms. Yet as big and well-designed as it is, with all those creamy photographs, it still manages to look like the smart, perverse product of that band of outsiders who in 1950s Paris decided to overturn the last generation. In Jean Doucet's story, François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Claude Chabrol, and Eric Rohmer all shucked their day jobs in film criticism to begin making films with borrowed cameras and their raw nerve, hunting their cinematic forefathers--Jean Renoir, Marcel Carne, and Marcel Pagnol. Doucet's lively book is true to their vision too. With its jazz album fonts and tinted photographs of young men smoking, it gives no corner to dumbness, and much space to the coolness of being alive during that time. Through 350-plus pages, Doucet, a philosopher who knew the filmmakers, covers the early days of the Cinematheque Français, where all the filmmakers met and watched Chaplin, Griffith, and Murnau; the emergence of Cahiers du Cinéma, where they published witty, polemical essays, as the center of their revolution; and the films themselves, beginning with Truffaut's 400 Blows in 1959 and Godard's Breathless in 1960. Doucet reproduces film reviews of the period and includes copies of old cine-club programs, newspaper stories, and a final chapter on "new waves" in Iran, Czechoslovakia, Brazil, and even the U.S. (see Jim Jarmusch).
