Books have in common? They were all written by Walter dean Myers a high school dropout!

Bad you are a thrilling book full of suspense and hard ships. IT starts while Walter was just a little boy. Even though his life was hard he somehow mad it through. The hardest part of waters life was probably his home town. Life in Harlem in the 1940s was rough. There was always crime and fights. The neighborhood was dirty and thee houses were rigtty.But Walter somehow made it thought. His main problem while he was growing up was his love for reading and writing. This is a problem because his bad and friends do not approve of his hobbies they begin to make fun of him and he begins to grow a hard outer shell.

He than becomes a bully. Towards the end of the story his anger calms and he starts to not care what people think of him. He then follows and becomes a famous writer. Though his father still doesn't approve his mother tries to keep him inspired. This Book teaches you to follow your dreams no matter what people think about you. They should not a have a say in you're future because only can decide what you do in life

Bad Boy is a memoir of the life of Walter Dean Myers. This book covers the author's (Walter's) childhood. I rated this book with four stars because of all of the excitement. Walter is a boy growing up in 1940s-50s. He moved to Harlem as a young boy and spent his childhood there.

Walter was always very bright. He loved to write. He also adored reading his comic books until "The Wicked Witch of West Harlem" (a woman named Ms. Dodson) told Walter that comic books were a map to jail. Walter never stopped wanting to become a writer. A lot of his writing influence came from growing up in Harlem.

Picture this... It is 1940's Harlem, New York. The streets are alive with vivid colors and amazing sounds everywhere you look. You hear the wonderful music of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller. Girls are jumping double-dutch on the sidewalks. All of these sights and sounds impacted Walter's writing.

Interestingly enough, although Walter loved to read and write, he started attending school irregularly. Then he started skipping more than he went. Eventually, he stopped going at all, resulting in him missing his own graduation! What was he to do? He felt that he was a failure. He could only think of one thing. Walter became a member of the United States Army.

Bad Boy was truly a great book. All of the events have you loyal until the end. You will love how everything falls in to place. I surely did. I highly recommend reading Bad Boy by Walter Dean Myers.

Books can do amazing things.......2007-03-26

Walter Dean Myers describes his early life and how he came to be a writer. Not an easy path, but one that I am glad he has shared. This book is pretty scary in some parts because with just a little variation of events in his life, he might not have made it out alive. Being poor, and Black, would have dictated a narrow and limited life for him if he had not found books; though then, as now, he had to be careful not to set himself apart too widely from the people around him. This memoir is recommended to mature readers or would-be writers, age 10 to 100.

The book Bad Boy by Walter Dean Myers is an extraordinarily moving book. It was funny, heartbreaking, and unforgettable. When I started reading it, I just couldn't put this gripping and suspenseful memoir down.

It took place in the 1940's and 1950's in Harlem, and it was about Walter Dean Myers's childhood. When he was a child, he had trouble with his poor speech. An example from the book would be this quote when he was in first grade. " `Dabba! Dabba! Dabba!' Manuel Bonilla taunted me, standing inches from my face and mimicking my poor speech as the rest of the class watched. `Dabba! Dabba! Dabba!'" Along with Walter's poor speech, he also had times when he beat people up, but for a good reason of course. An example of this would be " Manuel stopped the `dabba- dabba- dabba' when I hit him in the face. `Is he dead?' someone asked. Of course Manuel wasn't anywhere near dead, but that didn't stop Mrs. Bower from sending me directly to the principal's office." As you can see, Walter spent a lot of his time in the principal's office.

Myers was a "Bad Boy" but it wasn't until he threw a book at his teacher, till he had something to hide. After he threw his book at his teacher, he was forced to sit in a desk at the far corner of the room and start reading another book. This book was called East 'O The Sun And West 'O The Moon, and it was full of wonderful fairytales. After reading it for a little bit, he was allowed during the weekends, to take the book home and read it. That is how he became an avid reader. He uses this skill of reading to help improve his speaking throughout the book. In addition to loving reading, he also became a great writer.

I truly recommend this book if you like books with all kinds of suspenseful action going around. If you like books that have good morals, and help people learn lessons, then this is the book for you.

A Real Page Turner.......2006-01-15

I first checked this book out at the library somewhat reluctantly. It looked like a text book, in other words, necessary information but rather dull and difficult to read through. I couldn't have been more wrong! It was absolutely excellent information from someone who grew up as one of the boys from "the wrong side of the tracks." I am aspiring to be a Juvenile Probation Officer and this book was just so informative. It is a must read for anyone working with or raising young men.

This book is a moving interweaving of autobiographical anecdotes, patiently accumulated facts (did you know that more is spent in the US on prisons than on college educations? See malepsych.com for more such data), and concrete suggestions for understanding our national epidemic of angry youth and doing something constructive about it.

Don't let the impotence of current national solutions and quick-fixes ("just say no"; "bring your child to work day"; etc. ad nauseum) convince you that the problem of angry young men is insoluble. It's not. In fact, the suggestions offered by the author throughout the book are relevant, doable, sensible, and verifiable. Grouping the outside forces that make for violence into six Pathways to Prison, Dr. Kipnis goes on to explain what they look and feel like from inside the young rager--and it is that part we sorely lack in our sorry stabs at "explaining" youth violence from the outside, its perpetrators objects to be warehoused for a profit as slave labor.

Most of the violent males I've counseled have already done jail or prison time--and yet even with them, listening carefully, confronting them firmly and respectfully with the consequences of their behavior, educating them about basics like managing addictions and painful emotions, and showing them that strong males can be gentle, patient, and nonviolently assertive gave our counseling center (Cornerstone) close to a 90% success rate (meaning: 90% men who completed the full program never reviolated their probation). I wish I'd had this book available then, for them and for me. So much more can be done with young men before they ever get to this point!

Dr. Kipnis is President of the Fatherhood Coalition, a nonprofit that among other things encourages fathers to be an active, available part of their childrens' lives. I can tell you that of the hundreds of violent men I've worked with, not one--not one!--had had an adequate, let alone loving, relationship with his father. Given our country of unavailable dads (and moms, of course), do you begin to see why more young men are imprisoned in the US than were locked up in pro-aparteid Africa?

This and other dynamics behind the immense problem of young male violence are explained in this book with clarity, erudition, and personal experiences convincing far beyond the usual theoretical models.

The Talmud talks about the "Master of Return," the man who took the wrong way and then found the right way; in the eyes of God such a man stands higher than even the angels in heaven. One such man has penned this book, as you'll see for yourself when you read it. If you spend any time at all around young males, or if you simply want to understand what's going on in their world, then this resource is indispensable.

This book is excellent! I work in a correctional facility and it has really helped me to understand the young men that I work with. I plan on reading it with them and having discussions on the information presented. Many of these young men come from the "5-H club" mentioned in the book. They need people who understand where they have come from and what they have gone through. I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished for their crimes, but I feel we need to find alternative solutions for these young men, rather than putting them in an adult prison where they only learn new and more dangerous crimes from the hardened criminals.

I teach remedial English and reading at a middle school with a high poverty rate, a 40% latino population, and a big gang problem. All of my students are Latino, most are boys, and most are constantly in trouble at school, if not with the law. This book doesn't have all the answers, but it went a long way towards helping me understand where my troubled boys are coming from and why they act the way they do.

First Hand Experience.......2000-01-24

With all the sensational press about the dangerous young men in our schools and neighborhoods, it is refreshing to read Kipnis's first hand account of what contributes to the despair and hostility in troubled adolescent boys. His book has specific suggestions for addressing the problems he identifies in clear and compelling language. This book, and "Raising Cain" by Dan Kindlon amd Michael Thompson have been the best insights into the life of boys that I have read this past year.

I have two boys, 6 & 7 who have loved the cottony-captain for two years now. Both have been reading CU on their own since 1st grade. We have them all in their goopy, gross gloriousness. They're always good to go back to EXCEPT they are poorly bound(I mean the paperback ones) and fall apart and ours are all taped together. Boo for the binding, yahoo for the silly content that keeps two wild things still enough to read.

Yes, it took something totally "disgusting" to get my seven year old hooked on reading......but hey, I am not complaining. He is now carrying a book wherever he goes....who would have thought? When someone can get a kid to pick up a book and take along instead of the game boy.....well....just amazing!

Not My Cuupa Tea.......2007-09-15

This book was boring!!! Well, thats, my humble, ordinary opinion. Three stories, three different authors, yet exactly the same - DULL. I managed to complete the first story, skipping a lot of the pages to do so. I tried the second and third stories as I realised they were written by different authors. Couldn't finish either of them. I tried hard to like and enjoy but couldn't. I like story lines with a bit of fun and keep the "hot and steamy stuff" out of it. Hot and steamy needs to be written quickly, fast paced and keep it short, not pages and pages. Maybe I'm "square" but I just don't like these types.

Funny & Sexy--just the thing for Summer!.......2006-11-28

**This anthology features three excellent storytellers! You won't want to miss it, trust me.

The first story is "Luscious" by Lori Foster. Her stories always have a deep sense of family that I just adore. In addition, her writing tends to have a message about right and wrong and standing up for the little guy. I just love that! This story is no exception. Things start off tense from the get go when Lucius Ryder, SWAT hunk, is stuck in a heart-stopping hostage situation. And you'll let out a great big, "ahhhh" when it's all said and done, and Lucius manages to rescue a hero of a dog.

Unfortunately, he hasn't a clue what to do with the poor little thing. His first thought is to take him to his neighbor, Marci Churchill. She's very good with animals. In fact, one would say she can even connect with them. Lucius isn't really sure about all that, but one thing he is certain of is Marci's twin, Bethany. He wants her. Bad. Now. He's been a good boy and managed to tamp down his wild urges, but now, with Bethany so close, Lucius isn't so inclined to control himself any longer. Unfortunately--for Lucius--Bethany doesn't want anything to do with men anymore. Seems, it's up to Lucius to change her mind on that score. And the way he goes about doing it is just downright yummy!

The second story, "Its About Time" by Erin McCarthy, is true Erin McCarthy style. Her stories always make me laugh and yet they are oh-so steamy too! I haven't read a story by her that I didn't love. This story begins as the heroine, Trish Jones, is stood up. She's feeling just the slightest bit of self-pity. Then, she spots a sexy, brooding man at the other end of the bar wallowing in his own fair share of grief. While Trish tries telling herself that Caleb is not really right for her, her body isn't all that keen on listening. She wants Caleb Vancouver. Vigorously, passionately, wildly wants Caleb Vancouver. Caleb hasn't had sex in two years and he is way the heck past ready! Trish isn't going to know what hit her once he gets his big, hard hands on her delectable curves. And he plans to leave her breathless and begging. She plans to let him...these two sure do heat up the pages!

The last story in this anthology is Amy Garvey's "Wish You Were Here". I've never read this author before, but wow, I really enjoyed her story. I thought Garvey closed this anthology with a very charming and tender romance. It was the perfect happily-ever-after, in my opinion. I can't wait to check out what else she has on the shelves! Photographer, Mackenzie Pruitt, has just inherited her Aunt's house. The little dilapidated shed out back is going to be McKenzie's new studio. She's excited to begin this new chapter in her life, but still the `studio' needs a lot of work. A LOT of work. McKenzie hires contractor, Leo Dawson, to make the little shack into the studio of her dreams. When she first sees Leo, she finds herself nearly drooling. Good lord, the man was gorgeous! Big and rough and just gorgeous! Her first thought--okay, maybe not her first thought--is to photograph him. He wholeheartedly nixes the idea, saying that if she even tries to snap a single picture of him he's out of there. McKenzie is disappointed, but agrees, what choice does she have? But what she doesn't know is that Leo has a secret lay buried in his past, one that he doesn't have any intention of revealing. But as mutual attraction turns to something much deeper, Leo has to choose. Does he risk everything and tell McKenzie his secret, or does he walk away and let her go...? You'll have to read the book if you want to find out!

A Perfect Summer Treat!!!.......2006-06-10

Lori Fosters "Luscious" Bethany Churchill has quit her job, her lousy boyfriend and has returned to her twin sister Marci's in order to figure out exactly what she's going to do next. She's not prepared when Lucius Ryder a member of the SWAT team and her sister's landlord knocks on the door looking for help with his newly adopted dog Hero. The ladies call him "Luscious" for a reason and Bethany is having a hard time remembering why she has no faith in men when Lucius sets her on fire with a kiss. Will Lucius be able to prove that Bethany is the twin he wants and no other will do?

Erin McCarthy "It's About Time" Trish Jones has just been stood up...again. Why does this keep happening to her? Needing a break she goes to her favorite pub. She has no idea that this trip isn't going to end like they normally do...no, this time she is going to meet Caleb Vancouver and this guy is just what she's looking for but will she be smart enough to keep him or will she let him ride off on his Harley?

Amy Garvey "Wish You Were Here" Mackenzie is a photographer who is set on having a beautiful old building renovated and turned into her new studio. When yummy carpenter Leo Dawson shows up she decides she'd rather have him work on her which is really weird because he is not what she normally looks for in a man. But, what she thinks she wants is not going to be what she gets.

This was a steamy, fast-paced read with wonderful contributions from each of these highly talented authors. If you're looking for titles to add to your "must read" summer list...make sure this one's at the top!

Sexy Lawman Lucius Ryder is attracted to his neighbor sister. He thinks that ignoring the object of his attraction is the way to go. But, Surprise! Trish Jones has been stood up again. Determined to have a pity me party, she goes to her favorite bar and meets Caleb Vancouver. He is halfway drunk, not her type, or so she though until she decides to "help" him and takes him to her place. The chemistry between them can't be denied and soon things start to heat up. Erin's sexy romance trademark shines again in this story.

Wish you were here By Amy Garvey
Mackenzie Pruitt is determined to restore the house she inherited from her aunt, for that she need a carpenter! Leo Dawson is just what she needs and more. He is one hot package of sexy male/carpenter. Sparks fly when they are in the same room. This is a sexy, tender story that will have you sighing. My first read for Amy Garvey and will not be the last.

In general this is a steamy romance by great authors that once again prove that love can be found anywhere, even with a bad boy!

My seven year old son loves the Captain Underpants books! He doesn't like to read too much but he will sit and read these books in one sitting. I also think they're funny and enjoy reading them with my kids.

Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad, Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, Part I, The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets.......2007-04-19

I think this book was a laugh out loud funny book that kids will enjoy. Captain Underpants fights a Bionic Booger Boy named Melvin Sneedly. My favorite part was when the hamster started to spank Melvin. I also love the Flip-O-Rama pages that makes the cartoons look like they are in motion. George and Harold are believable to me because I know kids in real life who act like they do, but we know they are no such things as Bionic Booger Boys or Nasty Nostril Nuggets. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys laughing at gross things!

This is a great and funny book. I would recommend this book to anyone. Boogers, poop, underpants, and funny names, and activities are all loaded into Captain Underpants books. If you want a good, funny, easy read then this is the book for you. There are comics inside written by two child characters named Harold and George. They are very short and funny, with hilarious pictures.

Captain Underpants is about two boys who play pranks and write comics. These comics include a character named Captain Underpants. The principal at the school the boys attend confiscate the comics while they were working on them in class. Then the boys somehow hypnotize him into believing he was the character Captain Underpants. The principal ends up saving the boys in there many adventures such as the fights against Bionic Booger Boy, Wicked Wedgie Woman, Professor Poopy Pants, and many more.

Before I read this book I was really uptight, with no personality. Then I read it and I laughed more than I ever had more life. This book tells me that it is okay to let loose and have a good laugh every once and a while

This was a fiction book with short paragraphs and about 175 pages. There are many illustrations and easy to read vocabulary. I give this book 4 stars because of content.

Underwear Day is on August 8. Piqua, Ohio is where the Captain Underpants series takes place. George lives at 1526 Vine Street. George Beard and Harold Hutchins got their names from children's book characters that Dav Pilkey liked as a kid: "Georgie the Ghost", and "Harold and the Purple Crayon". Their last names (Beard and Hutchins) were the last names of Dav's two favorite "Little Rascals" characters: "Stimey (Matthew Beard)" and "Wheezer (Bobby Hutchins)". George and Harold's school, Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, got its name from "Curly" of "The Three Stooges". Curly's given name was Jerome Horwitz. Dav Pilkey chose Piqua because they have an "Underwear Festival" there every year. Sadly, most of Dav's childhood comic books no longer exist. Many were ripped up by his teachers, and others were "borrowed" by his friends. Dav's friends would take the comics home and lose them, or bring them back weeks later with pages missing. The only comics that Dav still has are the ones he made for his parents in the mid 1970's. Dav's parents didn't care for potty humor, so he wrote about three "non-offensive" super heroes called "Water Man", "Molecule Man" and "Mr. Shape-O". Watch for these guys to re-appear as very offensive villains in future "Super Diaper Baby" books. You might notice a theme in George and Harold's comic books: the gym teacher always gets attacked by the villains, but nobody seems to care. This theme reoccurs because many of Dav Pilkey's former gym teachers were REALLY, REALLY MEAN to him. So let this be a lesson to gym teachers all over the world: be nice to your students, or some day they might grow up and get revenge by making fun of you in their epic novels! Dav Pilkey has never actually given or received a "wedgie". Dav was called Dave until he got a job at Pizza Hut at age 15 because the typewriter ran out of E's. The name stuck with Dav.
The creation of Melvin Sneedly
Melvin Sneedly, the villain in this book, was actually based on somebody Dav knew in sixth grade. The kid Dave knew, Michael Sneedman, wasn't nearly as evil as Melvin, but he was annoying. All the students knew that Michael was smarter than anybody else in the class. Worst of all, he took every opportunity he could find to point that out to everyone and rub their noses in it. Michael had the infuriating habit of finishing all his tests and worksheets before everybody else. Then he'd open his desk, take out a red pen, and GRADE HIS OWN PAPERS! He'd go through all of his answers, make sure they were all correct, then award himself a giant "A+" at the top. He even went so far as to make smiley faces on his papers and write "Another Fantastic Job!" or "Keep up the GREAT work, Michael!" Here's how Dave got him back: After Christmas break, their teacher came up with a dumb idea to help make them all more competitive and aggressive. It was a system of keeping track of our academic achievements and "good deeds." For two weeks, they all brought in those little, flat plastic clips you find on the ends of loaves of bread. When their finally had enough, their teacher took them all home and spray painted them different colors. The next day, he brought in a large wooden board with all of our names printed on it. Directly under each kid's name was a nail. The object of this system was that every time you got an "A" or did a "good deed", you'd get a white bread clip (worth 1 point) to hang on the nail under your name. If you got five white bread clips, you could trade them in for a green bread clip (which was worth five points). Then there were yellow, blue, and red bread clips that were worth 10, 20, 50 points respectively. The granddaddy of all bread clips was the golden bread clip, which was worth 100 points. On an average day, an average kid could maybe expect to earn three or four white bread clips. Dave usually got one or two. But Michael Sneedman was obsessed. He wasn't happy unless he had earned at least a yellow clip every day. Some days he earned as much as 15 bread clips, and Dav distinctly remembers him earning a blue clip one day. After a while, the bread clip board started to become a great source of rivalry in the classroom. Kids were doing good deeds deliberately so they could get a new bread clip. They were asking for extra-credit homework so they could get even MORE bread clips. Things were getting too aggressive for Dave's tastes, but almost everybody else seemed to enjoy the competition. Everyone had sworn to be honest about the whole bread clip board thing, and they were all pretty honest (even Dave). But Dave knew there had to be a loophole somewhere. He had sworn to be honest when giving himself bread clips, and had sworn to be honest about not switching anybody else's bread clips around... but nobody said anything about not tipping the board over. One day during recess, it was too cold to go outside, so the students had recess indoors. Everybody was hanging around talking while Dave quietly made his way over to the bread clip board. He scoped out the area very carefully, just to make sure nobody was watching. Then with a flick of my finger, he nudged the bread clip board away from the wall upon which it was leaning. The board began to tip forward. Quickly (but not too quickly) He walked away from the board as it began falling to the floor. Dave had gotten about two and a half steps away when a giant CRASH! filled the classroom air. Everything stopped. The kids turned to see what had happened. Dave looked as surprised as he could. It couldn't have been more perfect. The bread clip board was face down on the floor. Bread clips were scattered everywhere. What had once been an intricate accounting of our grandiose moral and academic achievements had suddenly been reduced to a board with nails on it, surrounded by a bunch of little colored bread clips. "Oh, NO!" Dave shouted, "Look what just happened all by itself, accidentally, with no outside interference from anyone!" Half of the kids in the class cheered. Some kids seemed annoyed. Michael was mortified. His dreams of annihilating his peers had been crushed. His A's and "good deeds" were for naught. He dashed over to the board and lifted it up. But alas, every one of the bread clips had fallen off. "I REMEMBER," Michael shouted, "I had 344 points!" He leaned the board back up against the wall and began frantically replacing his clips. But unfortunately for Michael, nobody else had memorized their exact number of bread clips at that moment. We could only speculate. "I think I had four gold ones," Dave said. "Me too," said another kid. "I had seven!" said somebody else. "NO YOU DIDN'T!!!" screamed Michael, his eyes welling up with tears. "I WAS THE WINNER!!! I BEAT ALL OF YOU!!! NOBODY EVEN CAME CLOSE TO MY SCORE!!! I HATE YOU ALL!!!" Over the next few days, Michael tried his best to "right" the terrible wrong which had befallen him. He put himself in charge of redistributing the bread clips, but nobody was happy with his decisions. Soon kids began taking it upon themselves to arrange the bread clips to suit their own likings, and before long, chaos broke out. Kids were arguing and fighting so much that within a week, the teacher took the bread clip board outside and he tossed it in the dumpster. And that was it. It was over. Kids stopped doing good deeds, and gave up on trying to get "A's." Everybody calmed down and returned to normal except for Michael. Michael was so distraught over the whole incident, that he accidentally missed a mistake while grading one of his own quizzes. He put his usual "A+," and "100%" on the top of the paper, but when he got it back the next day, the "A+" had been crossed out and changed to an "A." The "100%" had been crossed out and changed to a "96%." Michael had made a mistake. Michael was in shock. Michael was devastated. It was the proudest moment of Dav's life, but the worst for Michael. Dav isn't sure what happened to Michael Sneedman. Perhaps he's still sitting at that very same desk, staring in disbelief at his "A", and wondering where it all went so terribly, terribly wrong. Thinking back on it, Dav feels bad that his one small act of defiance sparked such moral and academic anarchy in our classroom. But then Dav thinks about that 96%, and he feels it was all worth it!
About the book
Dave Pilkey has never admitted to knocking over the bread clip board until just now. As long as Dave comes clean, he also broke the test tubes in his fifth grade classroom by the sink in 1977. One of the Robo-Boogers, Carl, didn't originally have lots of little gross hairs sticking out of him. That happened by accident one day when Dav blew some eraser shavings off of his drawing table. The shavings landed on an early sketch of Carl. When he picked up the sketch, Dav thought it looked grossly funny. The eraser shavings made Carl look like he was covered with a bunch of shimmering nose hairs. So from that moment on, Dav always drew Carl with lots of gross hairs sticking out of his body. That's what artists sometimes call a "happy accident." The four Flip-O-Rama titles in this book are actually parodies of song titles. The songs are "Thanks for the Memories" by Bob Hope, "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" by B.J. Thomas, "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I Got Love in my Tummy" by the Ohio Express and "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles. Pages 165 and 167 of this book can be flipped to produce a "Flip-O-Rama" effect. It works pretty well, even though it wasn't designed for this effect. Dav didn't realize this until after he painted the pages. To make it work, flip only page 165. Be sure you can see the images on pages 165 and 167 when you flip. The whenhamstersattack.com website mentioned on page 37 really does exist. In case you're wondering why Sulu seems to get bigger and smaller sometimes (p. 143 and 144), it's because of the highly unstable nature of Flexo-Growmonic Steel, which is a seldom-used alloy compound with the ability to flex and grow when affected by positive or negative ions and/or currents. Scientists do agree that if Flexo-Growmonic steel were somehow fused with living mammal tissues at a cellular level, the normal electrical currents of a warm-blooded creature would be enough to trigger a flexing and/or growing reaction. Many scientists feel that the steel might flex and grow exponentially during times of great stress, and therefore it can be concluded that this book is entirely scientifically accurate. Super Diaper Baby and Diaper Dog are hidden in this book twice. Can you find them?
Summary
In this epic tale, George and Harold must save the day once again when a messy prank sets off a chain-reaction which could ultimately enslave all of humankind. Watch for Melvin Sneedly from Attack of the Talking Toilets to return as the nerdy super-genius whose hunger for for vengeance gets him into a snotty situation!
Pop Rocks & Coke
The experiment that Melvin's parents are doing on page 72 is actually an old urban legend that was quite popular when Dave was a kid. The legend warned children that they should never mix Pop-Rocks with Coke because it could make them blow up. Green Day sang a song called Pop Rocks and Coke. The Pop-Rocks and Coke story is not true. It really won't make you blow up. It will, however, cause you to burst into flames. A kid ate 6 bags of pop rocks at a party. He then proceeded to drink a 6-pack of Pepsi. The two substances combined in his stomach and exploded, killing him horribly. That's why pop rocks were taken off the market in the early eighties. The candy was invented in 1956 by General Foods research scientist William A. Mitchell and introduced to the general public in 1975, these fruit-flavored nuggets delighted kids with their fizzle. Small amounts of carbonation were released when the candy was placed in the mouth, causing both a mild exploding sensation and resulting in a satisfying sizzling noise kids loved. Though the confection had been extensively tested and found safe, the combustive candy still alarmed residents in Seattle. The Food and Drug Administration set up a telephone hotline there to assure anxious parents that the fizzing candy would not cause children to choke. Nevertheless, among kids, wild stories about the perils of eating Pop Rocks abounded. Mixing the candy with carbonated drinks would cause the stomach to explode because of too much carbon dioxide. One rumor said that an overly-cute kid who achieved fame in LIFE cereal commercials had died of this. Urban legends require victims who are known yet anonymous, the ubiquitous friends of a friend, to lend them a touch of credible realism without allowing for the easy verification of their details. Little Mikey was a kid known to other children by virtue of his famous television commercial, yet he was still relatively anonymous. Few people knew his real name, and his non-appearance in any public role subsequent to his well known LIFE commercial could therefore plausibly be attributed to his untimely demise. John Gilchrist, who played Mikey in the old commercial, survived childhood unexploded. He now manages advertising and accounts for a New York radio station.

Albeit the main plot is fairly good the book goes out of it so many times that you won't remember what was you reading. I think that the love story is just pathetic, why is she so distraught because she thinks that she doesn't know her new lover? For instance, it's really important to know what kind of beer her lover drinks? Take this book on your vacations and read it in a desultory way whenever you don't have anything else to do and maybe you'll like it.

Another fun Skye Denison cozy mystery.......2007-04-17

Skye Denison has hired sexy contractor Beau Hamilton to renovate the old house she inherited. Everyone recommended him, after all. His good looks don't hurt either. Especially since Skye has sworn off men since her breakup with her boyfriend.

Unfortunately Skye soon realizes his work isn't all it's cracked up to be. Before she can fire him, she finds him murdered. Who could have killed the contractor? Soon Skye finds the list goes on forever. Can she find the killer without putting herself in danger? Plus should she give Simon another chance? Then there's Chief Wally Boyd who is showing real interest in her. What's a girl to do?

I love this series. School psychologist Skye Denison is such a fun character. No wonder the kids love her so much. I was happy to see Wally and her giving it a chance in this book. I'm not sure which man I want to see her with, but she hadn't even given Wally a turn so that she could make a better decision.

I always enjoy the wacky characters in this series. The author has done a great job of creating an enjoyable series with a town full of interesting people. This installment didn't disappoint! I can't wait to read the next book. I highly recommend this book and series.

Wonderfully entertaining.......2007-03-09

This series is very enjoyable. I had the pleasure to meet Denise in person on my last cruise. It was a pleasure to discuss her books with her. One of her future books will take place on a cruise ship so she was doing research while on board. She did say that her character will marry so I am looking forward to her future books.

When Home Repair Turns Deadly..........2006-10-12

In the 8th book in the Scumble River mystery series, Skye Denison, has inherited a large home in desperate need of a makeover. She hires Beau Hamilton, a good looking "bad boy" type based on good looks, excellent recommendations, and evidence of his handiwork around town. Right from the beginning, however, Skye questions her choice of contractor when the work progresses slowly and with large errors. After giving Beau adequate time to fix his lax work ethic and sloppy carpentry, Skye finally decides to fire him and find a new contractor to remodel her home.

Coming home late one evening, she hears what she believes is moaning and investigates. Thinking it could be her missing cat, Bingo, Skye roams around in the woods only to discover the badly injured and bleeding Beau in a boat. After diving into the chilly water and struggling to pull the boat to safety, Skye arrives back at the shoreline to discover her relatives and the authorities have arrived on the scene. Her old nemesis, Sheriff Peterson is there to accuse her of murdering Beau over shoddy workmanship, and her new love interest, Chief Wally Boyd, steps in to defend her. Working to clear her name and find a killer determined to make mischief in her new home, Skye must also decide whether to give old flame, Simon, a second chance, or to move ahead in a new relationship with Wally.

This is a fun, interesting series! I adored the last two installments, and cannot wait for the next book! The only issue that I have with the premise is the fact that the ending of the relationship between Skye and Simon seems to be a bit juvenile (which is the case in many relationships). While reading the book, I just wanted to scream at them to discuss the "other woman" episode, and for them both to stop being so stubborn. I personally don't believe that trust means never having to explain yourself. If Simon had nothing to hide, then why was he so reluctant to talk about it? In any case, this added to the suspense and the drama of the book, and I am hoping to see a resolution in the next installment. However, I vote for Skye to pick Wally...Simon seems too straight-laced and boring for the fun-loving Skye. I am really looking forward to seeing which man Skye will choose...

Skye Denison has inherited a house which needs a lot of repair. She hires Beau Hamilton who turns out to be the worst workman that she could imagine, so she is puzzled as to why everyone has given him such good recommendations. When she finds Beau dead in the bottom of a boat, she begins her own investigation, since the local sheriff is trying to pin the murder on her. Meanwhile she is trying to live down the backlash in the small town of Scumble River, Illinois, after breaking up with her boyfriend, Simon. Handsome lawman Wally has had his eye on Skye for some time, so he is more than happy to step in as her new boyfriend. In the middle of all of this, Skye works hard in her job as the school psychologist for the district. As a former school counselor, I recognize Denise Swanson's descriptions of the teachers' lounge which is filled with ugly hand-me-downs, as well as the various meetings and difficulties with parents. Swanson's fans will enjoy this latest addition to the Scumble River series.

Bottom's Up is very romantic. With breathless anticipation, I waited for Brodie and Kat to make love and that moment is incredibly arousing. I love romance novels just like any other person. However, this one went beyond romance and was annoying after a while. It sometimes read like Beavis and Butthead, "He said hard." (Insert their laughs.) There was not a lot of dialogue between characters which made the plot weak. It was mostly the characters flashing back or thinking of their desires for the other person. How can characters go from talking in their heads to jumping into bed. The characters needed to interact more in my opinion. I do not understand how businesses can stay up and running if only the same customers come? How can a business grow? I also do not understand how Bree Sullivan, famous author, charcter in Night Watch became a Diva. You do not even see J.K. Rowling on People Magazine. Wait a minute, this is fiction. I got it!

In Bottoms Up, Brodie and Kat are best friends since they were 6 years old. They can talk about anything to each other. They did not bring up the possibility of dating or taking their relationship in a different direction? All of a sudden, he gets this thought that he is playing a game for his life and his heart. Ooh, nausea is setting in! Here are some nitpicky things that I picked up on. First, Brodie apparently dated a lot of women. However, Kat and Daisy were the only single young women in the area. Who were the other women and where were they from or is this a plot inconsistency? Also, if Kat was always fearless as stated in the beginning, why was she afraid to mention her interest in Brodie?

On Tap, was an ok story. This was the story of Reese Chisholm the second eldest of the clan. The distillery is what made the Chisholm's famous. This is the business that Reese runs. I do have to wonder, if the village is not a tourist attraction why does he have a tour available? Also, there was mention of this fact in all of the three stories. Dylan the eldest brother is building a bed and breakfast on the family property. However, there is mention of the fact that there is no tourism in this remote area throughout the book. Why the inconsistency? Daisy seems to be too overwhelming for Reese. He seems like a very private man who is not into dealing with other people less than Tristan but still... Daisy is gregarious and extremely positive. She is determined to sell Reese to have her build a website to attract people to the distillery. Ok. Daisy for being so business oriented and assertive, she seems almost shy in this story yet, in Bottoms Up she was more extraverted. What is this mention that she had quickies during lunch hour? She is suddenly able to curb her sex drive?

In Night Watch, we get to meet the reclusive Tristan Chisholm. He is the youngest of all the brothers. His brothers are constantly teasing him about not having a woman in his life. He is also an artist. I enjoyed this story the most. I think it is because he is so generous. You would want to have someone like him help you in case you ever had a car accident. He made Bree very comfortable and calm.

Pros of the book: It gives a nice description of the village. You can just imagine it clearly. You also see the way the people interact especially in the pub. I did like the romances to a certain degree. I especially liked the fact that the women were strong and independent women who had their own personalities. I liked Kat because she also had an untraditional career as a mechanic. She also believed that in order for a guy to be with her that he should not need to see her in makeup and a dress. I agree. She followed her own beliefs. Bree was humble even after all of her fame. In fact, she did not like the phoniness and demands made of her. Daisy was the beautiful dreamer who wanted to overhaul her life. It takes courage, committment, and determination to do that and she did too. In addition, I liked the fact that all the characters were not tall, gorgeous, blonde, leggy women. In fact, it does mention that Kat is ordinary. I would have to say if you are looking for a book to help you escape and throw in some romance then this is your book. However, if you want a book with a little more depth try the thousands of other romance novels out there.

Cute stories; not-so-cute execution.......2006-04-27

I did enjoy parts of these stories. They hit the "I-want-something-short-and-sweet-and-not-too-complicated" spot. The problem I had was this: I have often read that writers need to show rather than tell. I don't think I've ever seen a better (or worse?) illustration of that concept. So much of these stories takes place in the characters' heads. You get entire character histories and plots explained while a hero or heroine is, for example, looking out over a bluff thinking by him- or herself. It happens to a great degree in all three stories but more so in the first, the only one where the hero and heroine have a long history. I found myself skipping page after page while one or the other sat around thinking about their history and even setting up the premise for the remaining stories. It was a mite frustrating, especially since the stories are otherwise enjoyable.

Fun brotherly Anthology from Kauffman.......2006-04-23

This is an anthology that revolves around the three of the four Chisholm brothers. These three Scottish brothers are Brodie, Reese and Tristan.

"Bottoms Up" is Brodie's tale. Brodie is a charming pub owner who dropped out of college to come back to the town he has grown up in. His best friend since grade school is Kat. Kat is one of the local mechanics and is more at home in coveralls playing darts for money than in dresses. The one exception to this is that she has loved Brodie for years, but she doesn't know what to do about it. Daisy Mac moves to town and Kat is instantly jealous of her and what she sees as Brodie paying attention to her. But, Daisy is looking for another friend her age and she and Kat hit it off. Daisy convinces Kat to let her "make her over" which leads to Brodie finally seeing her as a woman.

"On Tap" is Reese's story. Reese is a strong and opinionated man. He runs the family distillery the way he wants to and doesn't take much input from others. But, when Daisy Mac approaches him to promote the distillery on the internet he sees something else he wants more. He wants Daisy, he seem to think of anything other than that he wants her. In the end he decides to let her build the website as it will give him access to her. While both are drawn to each other it takes a while for them to act on it.

The final story is Tristan's. In "Night Watch" you meet Tristan who many in the family think is wasting his time being a sheephearder. But, he loves his job and the fact it gives him time to think and paint the local scenery. He is a serious romantic but no woman has found a way into Tristins heart. Along comes the novelist Bree Sullivan. Bree has escaped to Scotland to get away from everyone who is trying to push her to write/finish her second novel. Her first one was a huge success and now has Bree feeling like her life is so out of control that she is no longer sure what is going on. But, when a naked Tristan saves her from being stuck in a submerged car things seem to be heading in the correct direction.

Kauffman as usual writes funny and fast moving stories. She helps to put a bit of a Scottish spin on a couple of time told traditional men/women stories. The problem to me is that the stories all seemed to be rushed a bit. The wrap up seemed to be so sudden. This is an issue with most anthologies though, and is probably just me.

Bad Boys in Kilts is a "Bonnie" Hit!.......2006-04-08

Anthology featuring 3 out of the 4 Chisholm brothers. All 3 brothers are hunks and very sexual. Besides each having great stories, there is a great lead in for the 4th brother who has a tragedy in his life and will have his own book I believe next year. I will be patiently waiting for his story.

"Bottoms Up": BRODIE is very charming and owns a pub. He loves the bar-life, playing darts and flirting with the ladies, except for Kat Henderson. She is a tomboy and has always had a crush on Brodie. He comes to realize the tomboy has grown up. They have a lot of fun with the pool table and it doesnt involve only playing pool.

"On Tap": REESE runs the family distillery and has very strong opinions. Daisy MacDonnell an American shows up to promote the distillery on the internet. Reese is very taken with her and all he can think about is that he wants Daisy. He is reluctant to let her do her website thing but gives her a chance as it will give him a chance with her.

"Night Watch": TRISTAN is a sheepherder who needs to share passion with a very special woman. Enter Bree Sullivan who has come to Scotland to escape. She is a best selling novelist of ONE book and is trying to escape the reporters and people who are hounding her to produce her 2nd novel. She wants to be alone to escape everything.

She is caught in a rainstorm and stuck in her car with the real threat of drowning as car has gone over an embankment and the front is submerged into an overflown stream. Tristan, naked, comes upon her and tries to help her. She thinks this naked man is crazy and out to kill her. Her finally rescues her and she realizes he not crazy and suddenly does not want to be alone.

One good story, Two not so good.......2007-02-04

I enjoyed Erin McCarthy's story, The Lady of the Lake. Shy school teacher Violet sees herself as undesirable. She wants to get pregnant and raise a child alone. Famous baseball star is looking for something more in his life. Their meeting and subsequent actions are fun to watch. Lori Foster's story was readable but not recommended. The guy meets her, likes her, realizes he loves her. Nothing new or interesting for me. The third story's plot and action were a little weird and concerned a sex toy room. I couldn't get into the characters very well. Readable but not recommended.

Yes! It's another Bad Boy anthology which once again offers the reader a fun sexy romp in three short stories by some of today's hottest romance authors.

In Lori Foster's "Playing Doctor" Dr. Axle Dean is shocked and surprised when he spots sexy Libby Preston at a party. Not exchanging names they enjoy a sizzling kiss and a little more in the garden. In HelenKay Dimon's "Hardhats and Silk Stockings" Whit Thomas has the unfortunate luck of tangling with Hannah Bridges...one of the most frustrating women ever created. Too bad he also suffers from a twisted burning attraction for her. Imagine his surprise when opportunity hands Hannah over to him for one night of no hold bar pleasure. Will they walk away from what they find...or will they grab and hold it with both hands?

All three stories are sexy fun reads with entertaining characters. This is a perfect "vacation" read that offers some really "Bad Boys" who finally meet their match! Falling in love should be so much fun!

But what he does want is a night or two with the lovely and delectable young woman who catches his eye at a formal affair he attends. Going down the path of temptation, Axel can't remember the last time he wanted this much, and she seems to feel the same way. Overcome with lust, Axel is ensnared in her sensual web until he learns of her innocence. Stubbornly refusing to break his own rules, he regretfully walks away....only to meet up with the lovely Libby Preston again in an unexpected manner. This time turning her down is no longer an option, and Axel realizes that some rules are made to be broken, especially when they lead to love.

Lori Foster creates some of the sexiest alpha males around. They may be determined to live footloose and fancy-free, but once they fall in love, no woman can resist all that intense concentration and incredible passion. She also writes about some of the most innocent yet responsible heroines, and I love the complete honesty in her characters. One gets the sense that these are traits that Lori values very highly, and she captures those qualities so well. Her stories are about honorable people who make mistakes but who don't back down from their responsibilities or from their families. A very traditional outlook that Lori manages to keep fresh and entertaining. She is an auto-buy author for me.

Lady In the Lake: Shy school teacher Violet Caruthers is so forgettable that when she falls off her soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend's boat into the lake, he doesn't even realize she's gone. Thankfully she's soon rescued by sexy baseball player Dylan Diaz, who is instantly captivated by this shy, honest and sexy woman. All he can think about is how much he wants to take her to bed, but Violet is not like one of his groupies, thank God, and getting her there is going to take more than a persuasive smile. Fortunately for him, he has something she wants, and soon they both see stars. Dylan realizes he's found what's been missing in his fast-paced glamorous life, and Violet realizes that she's not so forgettable after all, at least not by the man who loves her.

Oh my gosh, I completely fell in love with Dylan. Sweet and sexy and oh, so wicked, he is the perfect match for reserved, maternal Violet. Erin McCarthy writes such funny, sexy stories, and she also has her own strong voice and style that is her trademark. She is one of my all-time favorite authors - it is amazing and wonderful how she keeps outdoing herself in her writing. Her humor is honest, and she says what other people only think about - this makes it extremely easy to relate to her characters right from the start. If you have not read a story by Erin McCarthy, well, what are you waiting for???

Hardhats and Silk Stockings: Contractor Hannah Bridges is bound and determined to prove herself to her family and step away from the blue-collar stigma she grew up with. She doesn't have time for the irresistible yet exasperating Whit Thomas in her life. But Whit has other plans, and they all have to do with Hannah. He's very attracted to her, and deep down knows she feels the same way but she can't let go. He decides to help her out with that by giving her a night of passion, no strings, no regrets. Things are going really well until Hannah catches on to him. Now Whit has to prove to her that their night of pleasure was not just a notch on his bedpost, but just the beginning of something really wonderful.

This is HelenKay Dimon's first story, and it was rather enjoyable. I did have a problem with all the interruptions the couple had to deal with - jarred me out of the story and made me groan in frustration because I didn't feel that it added to the scene, at least not every single time it occurred. Instead it led to too many misunderstandings. I felt the characters were not given enough time together to really work on their relationship, and that bothered me. HelenKay had a great concept and I enjoyed her writing, just not how some of the scenes were handled. I do think she has a lot of potential to tell some really amazing stories, so I will definitely give her stories another chance.

Playing Doctor by Lori Foster has nursing student Libby Preston catching the eyes of sexy doctor Axel Dean. Their first meeting has sparks flying between them but Axel panics when he realizes Libby's inexperience. Libby and Axel's next meeting will have you laughing your head off. It's priceless. Libby though young has had to grow up fast and is delightful match for Axel. Watching Axel realizes this woman is it for him is a treat. This romance is witty, spicy and deliciously hot.

Erin McCarthy's Lady Of The Lake has poor heroine Violet Caruthers being dumped accidentally into a lake and her boyfriend not noticing she is gone. Dylan Diaz rescues her and can't believe that any man would not miss this gorgeous woman. As they get to know each other, Dylan agrees to help Violet conceive a child. What starts out as a one-time deal ends up being the real deal. Dylan and Violet's story is laugh out loud funny as well as sizzling sexy.

Hardhats and Silk Stockings is a stunning debut by HelenKay Dimon. Hannah Bridges has a major chip on her shoulder, she has had to prove herself every day of her life. Contractor Hannah isn't going to let wickedly handsome Whit Thomas the architect distract her. But Whit has a plan to get underneath Hannah's skin to the real woman she hides from everyone. Their chemistry is explosive and delightful. This is an enchanting, fast paced, tantalizing story.

When Good Things Happen To Bad Boys has three exceptional stories. It's the complete package, funny, sexy and brazen. Gotta love those bad boys.

This is a genuinely lovely book that explores the life and work of Earl Hamner but, more importantly, this book has a synopsis of each episode and comments from the actors. I would highly recommend "Good Night, John Boy". It was a terrific summer read!

A great companion to the television series........2007-06-15

This is an excellent companion guide to the television program (now up to its fifth season in DVD). It offers some good general info on how the series came about, as well as a description and some personal commentary on every episode. The photos are great, and there was just a little information about the "real-life Waltons", but unfortunately the vast majority of the book is taken up with episode summaries. Not really what I was looking for, but it is valuable for a Waltons fan.

I was a baby when this was on the air.. but recently i have been buying the walton dvd's for my parents as gifts, and got hooked on the Waltons as a result (wathing with mom is great bonding). so for my mom's birthday i decided to buy her this book (since season 4 isnt available yet). I was sure to order it in time to read it before i had to give it to her and I Love it, i will order the two movies Earl talks about that lead up to the series.. and i had NO idea he was the producer of the version of Charlottes web i adore. This is a wonderful gift for anyone who loves the waltons.
