Book Description

MEDICOLEGAL INVESTIGATION OF DEATH, known as the "bible" of forensic pathology to pathologists around the world, has withstood the test of time, recently celebrating its twentieth year of publication. Totally rewritten and updated throughout, the text is oriented to forensic pathologists, criminal investigators, and attorneys. It embraces all aspects of the pathology of trauma as it is witnessed daily by law enforcement officers, interpreted by pathologists of varying experience and expertise in forensic pathology, and used by lawyers involved in the prosecution and defense in criminal cases as well as those engaged in civil litigation. This authoritative and complete textbook is written by some of the most respected experts in the United States. The book continues to use a simple and practical approach in keeping with the tradition established by the previous editions. It avoids technical terminology, where possible, in compliance with the aim of addressing not only physicians but all parties with an interest in the study of injury patterns and the practice of pathology as it relates to the law. A large amount of new information and abundant material not previously covered are included in this volume. The many new illustrations, diagrams and sketches showing patterns and mechanisms of injury as well as an inclusive index render this book unique.

All the information you need for death investigation...has a couple extra chapters in the new edition that were not in the last one...

5 out of 5 stars If my office caught fire, this is what I'd bring with me........2006-06-30

At first I was hesitant to spend $120 on a reference book I couldn't manually look through (aside from the pages available for viewing through Amazon), but I took a chance. As a forensic scientist who is new to death investigation, this reference is well worth the money. From front to back, this book is packed with well-written, thorough discussions of the different causes and manners of death. The written information, complimented by hundreds of photos and illustrations, is presented in terms that are comprehensible even to those without a background in forensic pathology or medicine. For the amount and quality of information packed into this large volume, $120 is actually a steal. I absolutely recommend this reference for anyone who has a role in death investigation. Students of forensic science, if you're too broke to buy this, put it on your wish list and hope you get it as a graduation gift. It's a must-have that is worth the three-digit price tag.

4 out of 5 stars Spitz and Fishers Medicolegal Investigation of Death........2005-08-18

This text is a requirement in some forensic fellowships. While in some subjects, the text is out-of-date, in other subjects, the facts never change and provide for a overall great reference text. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering forensics as a career.

5 out of 5 stars A highly readable account from an expert on the matter........1997-12-08

This "Account on the Collapse of the Soviet Union" may be the best book I have read about the demise of the Soviet Union - I personally prefer it over David Remnick's "Lenin's Tomb," which won the Pulitzer Price. For one thing I think Mr. Matlock is among the men best suited to write about the Soviet Union, since he has experienced it first-hand for over 30 years. Moreover, although he never denies that the book constitutes his personal account, he still manages to seperate the issues discussed from his own person, something that I found Remnick to have trouble with at times. His theories, although not necessarily earth-shattering, are backed up by oodles of evidence, be it data or just anecdotes. The summary and the description of the CIS states and the future of the Commonwealth also provide a glimpse into the future. All you ever wanted to know about the epochal events and influences shaping the former Soviet block today.

Probably the most complete recent book on the physical and cultural aspects of death. Covers everything from embalming, cremation, cryogenics, autopsies, organ donation, anatomical dissection, burials, funerals, decay, cannibalism, body snatching, use of corpses in secret rituals and religious ceremonies. This book sheds light on a subject that our society conveniently buries--literally and figuratively. As the author argues, the topic of death is treated with even more circumspection than pornography.

    From the Publisher

Written for both laymen and professionals, this book gives answers the questions that everyone wants to ask in a question and answer format. What really happens to a dead body? What does our culture do with corpses and what have other cultures done? How does a body turn to dust? What happens in embalming, cremation, cryogenic preservation, autopsies, anatomical dissection, organ donation, burials, and funerals? How do we transport bodies and what does a medical examiner really do? How about the more bizarre uses for corpses, such as cannibalism, body snatching, use in secret rites, research, and religious ceremonies? This book describes individual and societal experiences, drawing not only from the medical sciences, but also from the arcane and secretive world of the funeral industry. We rarely speak about death—because it is the pornography of our culture and we know so little about it. This book sheds light into dark corners of our society and proves that, once again, truth is stranger than fiction.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for the morbidly curious..........2007-07-18

Personally, I have always had a passing interest in mortuary science. Perhaps this is because what goes on "behind the closed doors" of the funeral home is always kept so discrete...usually for good reason. This book has been extremely helpful in allowing me to have a "peak" beyond those doors, and is very descriptive about what happens to us when we pass on. After reading this book, I feel that many of my questions have been answered, at least for the most part. The only reservation I have about this book is the fact that it reads more like a text...very scientific. If you're looking for light and leisurely material to browse, this book is probably not for you. But, if it's the "real deal" you're after, and are serious about learning more about what takes place when we die...this is the one!

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of death.......2007-04-28

This book is a virtual encyclopedia of death. It is extremely comprehensive, covering subjects ranging from organ donation, brain death, corpse disposal in other cultures and throughout history, the funeral industry, burials, cremations, and much more. At the end there is even a handy-dandy section that you can fill out to leave for your loved ones with instructions about how to dispose your body, what kind of funeral you want, etc.

It is highly informative yet not too technical, written in plain language, and in a highly readable question and answer style, so you only read that which you are interested in. I appreciated the fact that there are no gruesome or gory photographs of corpses, only drawings and historical engravings that are not too offensive to the sensitive among us.

There is obviously no love lost between the author and the funeral industry, and he frequently subtly (and not-so-subtly) condemns the outrageous costs and selling tactics used by the industry, often using dry humor or a tongue-in-cheek manner. The author also has the more positive agenda of promoting organ donations, and seeks to do that by thoroughly explaining how the process is done.

This book covers just about everything you ever wanted to know about death and the history of corpse disposal. However, it did leave out a couple of subjects which I would have been interested in reading. The first is the so-called "coffin birth" which happens when a pregnant woman dies (believe me, this is not too gory to be covered in this book, which goes into detail about decomposition, cannibalism, shrunken heads, etc.).

The other is about what options are available to families who can't afford a funeral or internment for their loved ones. I am not talking about "pauper's graves" for indigents/homeless, which is covered in the book, but simply options for low income families who have no funeral insurance and can't afford to pay thousands for a casket or even cremation - what kinds of social agencies are out there to help in these case that may offer lower cost disposals? From whom do you seek help if this happens to your family (i.e. social workers at hospitals)? These are questions that still need answers.

Overall, though, this is an impressive undertaking and is the only book you'll ever need to read for a generalized study of death.

5 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedic Overview of Death & Dying.......2005-07-26

Of the many books on death and dying that I've read over the past six months, Kenneth Iserson's "Death to Dust" is by far the most comprehensive and enjoyable of the bunch. Weighing in at over 800 pages, "Death to Dust" is truly an encyclopedic approach to the subject.

Iserson divides his discussion into fourteen chapters; the shortest is about eleven pages (the introduction), while the longest is a massive 80+ pages (the average chapter length is about 50 pages). He adeptly covers all aspects of death, dying, grief, mourning, and post-mortem activities and concerns. He discusses practical matters, such as how to arrange a funeral, bodily transport across state lines, embalming, funerary rituals and etiquette, cremation, and advance directives. Iserson even includes a helpful, ten-page "Body-disposal Instructions and Discussion Guide," designed to help the living ease the inevitable burden their next of kin will face when they pass away.

However, "Death to Dust" is not simply a consumer guide. Although he does offer a wealth of practical information, he also launches into more esoteric and macabre discussions. Some chapters are certainly not for the faint of heart. If cannibalism, headhunting, corpse dismemberment, grave robbing, anatomical dissection, autopsies, or putrification give you the heebie-jeebies, read with caution! True to its encyclopedic nature, "Death to Dust" takes care to cover ALL aspects of death and dying - particularly the more unpleasant and morbid topics. Iserson approaches these subjects with a dry sense of humor. Although I thought that his witticisms spiced the book up and made his discussion more entertaining, some audiences might be taken aback by Iserson's (sometimes) light tone.

It's obvious that Iserson (or his editor!) spent a lot of time making the book easily navigable (an especially important detail in a book this size!). Each of the fourteen chapters is further sub-divided into lettered subsections (usually 25+ per chapter). The subsections each have their own heading and read like short articles, so that readers can easily browse through the book and skim over desired sections. The index and table of contents are also very detailed. Finally, Iserson has gone to great pains to cite every single reference he consulted while constructing the book - and there are many! The typical chapter has hundreds of footnotes, which are conveniently included at the end of each individual chapter.

For the macabre among us, if you buy just one book on death and dying this year, look no further - "Death to Dust" is it! Those looking to arrange for their own post-mortem plans might find the book helpful as well, although there are consumer guides designed specifically for advising individuals of wills, advance directives, organ donation, and corpse disposal ("Caring for the Dead: Your Final Act of Love," by Lisa Carlson, is an excellent place to start). I'm not sure I'd recommend "Death to Dust" to the newly bereaved, however; some of the subject matter might prove a bit upsetting. On the upside, it's easy to skip over these sections altogether, as the book is very organized.

My only gripe: Iserson included WAY too many quotes from the self-proclaimed "poet-mortician," Thomas Lynch - who, I have determined, is a gawd-awful poet with an exaggerated view of his own self-importance. I literally cringed every time Iserson included excerpts of his amateurish prose - it's just that painful.

    5 out of 5 stars Very medical..........2005-04-12

...yet captivating. This tome outlines everything that happens to dead bodies, from death itself and forensic pathology to a visit to the embalmers. It outlines exactly, medically, what happens to a body upon cremation, natural decomposition and everything in between. Although there is significant medical terminology, it is written in a way that the layperson can understand. It's truly not for the squeamish but if this is your interest, you need to add this to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good source for students of "death".......2004-04-14

Anyone considering going into the mortuary business should read this book. It will either confirm your choice of occupation or totally put you off the subject. The history of funeral practice was especially interesting. Man has always feared the unknown and death is high on the list. And history shows that humans still have not conquered that fear. This book breaks down what actually happens from your last breath until your body is disposed of, whether it be burial, cremation, autopsies, organ donation or....The glossary is useful and there is even some "gallows humor". All in all, it's worth reading.

      Book Description

This laboratory guidebook provides step-by-step procedures that will aid in the dissection and collection of major organs and tissues of the most common species of small animals used in biomedical research. Through extensive use of photographs and illustrations, the dissector is guided through a complete necropsy of each species for the purpose of collecting the organs and tissues routinely examined by pathologists. The techniques described will enable the technician to perform necropsies on almost any mammal in a precise and logical sequence, and to properly collect tissue in order to avoid diagnostic errors. Morphological differences among the various species are discussed.

        Book Description

On Thursday, July 13, 1995, Chicagoans awoke to a blistering day in which the temperature would reach 106 degrees. The heat index, which measures how the temperature actually feels on the body, would hit 126 degrees by the time the day was over. Meteorologists had been warning residents about a two-day heat wave, but these temperatures did not end that soon. When the heat wave broke a week later, city streets had buckled; the records for electrical use were shattered; and power grids had failed, leaving residents without electricity for up to two days. And by July 20, over seven hundred people had perished-more than twice the number that died in the Chicago Fire of 1871, twenty times the number of those struck by Hurricane Andrew in 1992—in the great Chicago heat wave, one of the deadliest in American history.

Heat waves in the United States kill more people during a typical year than all other natural disasters combined. Until now, no one could explain either the overwhelming number or the heartbreaking manner of the deaths resulting from the 1995 Chicago heat wave. Meteorologists and medical scientists have been unable to account for the scale of the trauma, and political officials have puzzled over the sources of the city's vulnerability. In Heat Wave, Eric Klinenberg takes us inside the anatomy of the metropolis to conduct what he calls a "social autopsy," examining the social, political, and institutional organs of the city that made this urban disaster so much worse than it ought to have been.

Starting with the question of why so many people died at home alone, Klinenberg investigates why some neighborhoods experienced greater mortality than others, how the city government responded to the crisis, and how journalists, scientists, and public officials reported on and explained these events. Through a combination of years of fieldwork, extensive interviews, and archival research, Klinenberg uncovers how a number of surprising and unsettling forms of social breakdown—including the literal and social isolation of seniors, the institutional abandonment of poor neighborhoods, and the retrenchment of public assistance programs—contributed to the high fatality rates. The human catastrophe, he argues, cannot simply be blamed on the failures of any particular individuals or organizations. For when hundreds of people die behind locked doors and sealed windows, out of contact with friends, family, community groups, and public agencies, everyone is implicated in their demise.

As Klinenberg demonstrates in this incisive and gripping account of the contemporary urban condition, the widening cracks in the social foundations of American cities that the 1995 Chicago heat wave made visible have by no means subsided as the temperatures returned to normal. The forces that affected Chicago so disastrously remain in play in America's cities, and we ignore them at our peril.

4 out of 5 stars A very interesting, if somewhat dry and academic, book.......2007-09-11

On Thursday, July 13, 1995, the temperature in Chicago climbed to 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Over the course of the next week, while the city sweltered in the stifling heat, and power grids failed, people began to die - often senior-citizens that felt trapped in their own homes. Before long, the nation was treated to images of the Cook County Medical Examiner's office storing bodies in refrigerated trucks donated by a meat company, while city officials sought scapegoats. By the time the heat wave ended, after July 20, some 739 more people had died in Chicago than was statistically to be expected, at least 485 of whom had died directly from heat-related causes.

In this book, author and assistant professor of Sociology, Eric Klinenberg, looks at what happened during that long and torturous week, what were some of the root causes of the disaster, and what can be learned from it. Overall, I found this to be a very interesting, if somewhat dry and academic, book.

I do, though, have two minor complaints about the book. First of all, while the author excoriates then recent city-wide reforms that were still in the process of being implemented during 1995, he does not address the problem of Chicago's lack of a health diversity of political opinion (the last non-Democratic mayor was elected in 1927). The problem of Chicago's one-party rule has made it a byword for incompetence, corruption and downright criminality to this day! Secondly, while the present Bush Administration's tepid response to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans has drawn much criticism, Mr. Klinenberg fails to mention the then Clinton Administration's complete and utter disregard of the events within Chicago.

But, that said, it is an interesting book, perhaps the only one on this terribly tragedy that is now almost completely forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Candidate for Course Syllabi.......2005-02-26

The only think I would add to what has been said already is that this book should be strongly considered for courses that emphasize the interaction between medicine and public health. Unlike other books written about the urban condition, this book focuses on a single public health problem and presents it from both scientific and sociodemographic perspectives. Medical and public health students alike stand much to gain by reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Heat Wave: Social Isolation in Chicago.......2004-12-18

Over the summer of 1995, the area surrounding Chicago experienced extreme weather conditions that exposed people to a heat index reaching 126 degrees. The result was devastating to the community; a record number of deceased bodies were discovered as a direct result of heat exposure. The hot, humid air stalled over Chicago for one long week. When it was finally dissipated, it left residents of Chicago scared and confused. City streets had failed, electricity use had peaked and many lost power, and power grids had completely collapsed. It was a disaster that was heard around the world.
Between the dates of July 14 and July 20, 739 Chicago residents died from heat exposure. Every year, heat waves kill more people than all other natural disasters combined. However, they often are not heard of or spoken about. This is due to the fact that they are not physically damaging and that most heat wave victims are those who are socially isolated from their community. These groups often are composed primarily of elderly, poor, and those who choose to be isolated.
Heat waves directly are linked to these isolated groups, and until now, were not given any attention. Many are left vulnerable to disaster by not being connected into the community. Eric Klinenberg examines the tragedy that took place in Chicago and draws attention to the social, political, and institutional groups that all were involved in the situation. Heat Wave ties in isolation, inner-city neighborhoods, city services, and the news media as integral parts of the disaster that resulted from the heat wave in Chicago.
The first problem examined by Klinenberg was isolation. Many of the victims perished alone, without any companions nearby. Of the 739 bodies that were found dead, 170 of them went unclaimed showing the intensity of loneliness of those who perished. Klinenberg says that elderly isolation is the result of demographic shifts, crime, spatial transformation, and substance abuse problems. Adding to the problem, many of the elderly people lived in sealed rooms that did not allow for windows to be opened.
In the following chapter, Klinenberg examines the urban neighborhood and relates social structure to the isolation theory. He concludes that high poverty plays an important role when evaluating who is at risk for heat waves. Klinenberg emphasizes that these segregated areas do not allow people to establish social connections. Depleted buildings and violent crimes lead to further isolation. Once isolated, an event such as a heat wave disproportionately places certain individuals at an elevated risk to be affected by a disaster situation.
After examining the urban neighborhood, Klinenberg discovers that services provided by the city were not equally distributed. He concludes that support services should not be in the hands of government control. When you place the power into institutional organizations, services are distributed unequally and only offer aid to certain groups of people. Many people struggle to keep up with those benefiting and give up the chase for the services offered. Without adequate services, such as air-conditioning, people are placed at elevated risks from dying from a heat wave.
In his last analysis of the Chicago catastrophe, Klinenberg ties in the news media and their relevance to the heat wave in Chicago. The way the news is distributed is tied in to fit what specific people want to hear. For example, suburban residents were often not informed of the underlying problems related to the heat wave. Instead, the mayor spoke only of the event as being a natural disaster that could not have been avoided. Often, the people not affected by disasters are those that speak of the event. They are able to shape what is talked about and displace talk over the social problems related to the disaster.
Together, the factors discussed helped shape the events involved with the heat wave in Chicago. The socially isolated people seemed to be at the highest risk from the disaster. This incident represented how different groups and unrepresented and how certain people can control what is taken out of an event. Klinenberg closely examines the socially isolated to show that connections are important, and one is in threat without having connections.
However, Klinenberg fails to mention how certain people are motivated in different ways. He follows the thought of being isolated as a threat to one's health. Little talk is given to those who choose to be isolated. While some people feel as though they need people around them, others feel that isolation is the only way to break away from the mass crowd. Isolation does not result from one factor alone. People choose to remove themselves from society for many different reasons.
Also, Klinenberg fails to mention what is needed to change the current situations in Chicago. It is important to understand what happened in Chicago, but it would be hard to change the situation without a well-thought plan. Social and political institutions seem to be a starting point for most changes. We need to draw attention on how to change corrupt practice from political institutions. We must establish equal rights again and allow everyone to have access to city services. Without a plan, things will continue to go as they always have and attention on unequal practices will be displaced.
The disaster that occurred in Chicago was not the heat wave itself; it was the underlying social problems that stemmed from the heat wave. This put certain groups of people at elevated risks for heat related death. Attention must be given to heat wave disasters; they cause more deaths every year than all other natural disasters. The victims deserve equal rights and services. By doing so, life can be protected and shared among all groups of people.

        4 out of 5 stars Heat Wave.......2004-12-17

Klinenberg's investigation of the conditions and outcome of the 1995 tragedy deals with issues of human interdependence and examines the importance of local and regional communities in preventing future catastrophes of this kind. Heat Wave takes a natural phenomenon and penetrates to issues of economic and social depravity, the echelon of neighborhood that one resides and the solitude that extends from those circumstances.

3 out of 5 stars makes you think about things that you never think about.......2004-12-17

Countless movies and books have been based on natural disasters. After all, what is more powerful or awe-inspiring than an F5 tornado, blowing away heavy machinery as if it were nothing? Who isn't slightly alarmed at the possibility of a dormant volcano suddenly erupting and blanketing a sleep mountain town in lava? But sociologist Eric Klinenberg's Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago examines a quieter, less thought about natural disaster: heat waves. More specifically he examines the famous heat wave that hit Chicago in 1995, ultimately causing over 700 deaths. Furthermore, he examines how, in this day and age, so many people could be so profoundly affected by something that we would appear to have a handle on. The main aspect Klinenberg brings up is that of social isolation and how this pervasive trend could end up ultimately costing us our lives. But how does something like this happen, he wonders; how, with all of our modern technology and community outreach programs are people still "left behind." Furthermore, who are these people and how is it that our society puts certain people in these positions. With a comprehensive account of the event and the culmination of his own data, Klinenberg presents are very interesting view on social constructs in the context of natural, momentous events that are out of human control.

        Book Description

This handbook consists of actual case material with a presentation of the clinical and laboratory data, an extensive discussion and analysis of the differential diagnoses, and a description of the pathology findings. The material, in problem-based format, includes 34 cases, more than 90 illustrations, an anatomy glossary, and laboratory normal values. It is intended for use by medical students in problem-based curricula, but is presented with sufficient sophistication to be useful to residents in pathology and internal medicine, and to pathologists and cardiologists. The book covers the entire spectrum of cardiovascular disease and may be unique, as there is nothing known to the authors that is comparable.

4 out of 5 stars Review by John P. Veinot, Ottawa Civic Hospital, Ontario, CA.......2004-03-12

The book consists of 34 cases in a problem-based (PBL) format. There are about 90 B&W photos and micrographs from post-mortem exams, an anatomy glossary, and laboratory normal values. The book chapters include practical cardiac anatomy, atherosclerotic heart disease and ischemia, diabetes, cardiomyopathies, valve disease, congenital heart disease, endocarditis, myocarditis, cardiac tumors, pericardial disese, aortic aneurysms, collagen vascular diseases and vasculitis, and medicolegal cases.

In reviewing the book, I must state I am biased. Autopsy pathology is being challenged with decreasing numbers of cases for a variety of reasons. This is unfortunate. Autopsy pathology remains an excellent opportunity for learning and clinicopathological correlation. There is simply not enough of this "classical" training in Medicine. The autopsy remains relevant to medical practice. The more one learns about disease, the better one will be able to treat the living.

The book details numerous cases, autopsy findings and discusses the clinical presentation, disease complications and manifestations. It succeeds admirably in this task. One can argue that the cases are a bit dated and some perhaps not reflective of recent medical care (not much in coronary interventions, which are now common place), but the authors do point this out in most cases. I do not feel this distracts from the goal of the book - to encourage active thought of disease pathology and its clinical consequences.

The book obviously focuses upon cardiovascular disease, but I particularly found the discussions of how generalized disorders, including diabetes and endocrine diseases such as thyroid disease, affect the body. In autopsy pathology, one must consider the whole patient and the disease interactions in multiple systems. This is of course also what one must do with the living we are assessing and treating. Dr. Factor is an internationally recognized expert in myocardial disease and thus these sections are particularly strong.

The case mix is generally well chosen. One can point out omissions and criticize inclusion of esoteric disease, but in general the book is well balanced, reflective of most important disease categories, and not meant to be all-inclusive.

Some of the illustrations are dark and a bit hard to interpret. I also personally would have like to see more illustrations, but this must be balanced with the cost of the book.

Who should read this book? The authors state "it is intended for use by medical students in problem-based curricula, but is presented with sufficient sophistication to be useful to residents in pathology and internal medicine, and to pathologists and cardiologists." I agree with this. I plan to use it with medical students and residents doing electives in Cardiovascular and Anatomical Pathology. It would be excellent to give to residents to study during their autopsy rotations. I think it could be valuable for trainees in pathology, cardiac surgery, and cardiology. For my own continuing medical education, I found it interesting and informative, and I plan to revisit my favorite parts.
