A rightful classic.......2007-08-08
This was my first Shakespeare and it certainly won't be my last. While some people dislike this book for the "love at first sight" "stupidity" of the two, I think you need to try to get past that. I definitely agree that Romeo and Juliet are morons, but it makes for a nice story. Would you really want to watch a play about two people who court each other for years, get married to the happiness of their families, and have prosperous children? I sure wouldn't.
So what if know in their right mind would ever act like? The play is written beautifully and it doesn't lag.
A good introduction to the tragedies........2007-05-25
Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful story, and it is a marvellous play to introduce young people to the beauty of Shakespeare. Who doesn't like to read or hear about star-crossed lovers? Who hasn't already heard the legend? The play is easy to read as the plot moves along rapidly, and it's beautifully written. Romeo and Juliet are so tragic in their love, and the silly feud between their two families is so destructive and senseless. Read it for the story, but enjoy it for the beautiful prose.
Romeo & Juliet summary by fernando f........2007-02-20
Romeo and Juliet was an epic story the meaning of the story to me was two lovers with parents keeping them away from each other. I personally really liked the book because it tells people how you can't hide true love because then it would just make things worse for the both. What I don't like in the story how they have to argue over stupid reasons if there in love then there in love let it be forget about all those problems you used to have and think about how good the future could be. Then again why did the families start arguing in the first place to start of with? Both of the families are alike they got money and they also have many family members looking after them but they get in things there not suppose to. The whole theme of the story took place in Verona Italy that's were the two lovers grew up and have been there most of there lives. So therefore both of them end up seeing each other all they want is there family to just get along and they wont have to worry about them having to sneak out to see each other in the middle of the night so if I had to rate this story I would give it a 10 because it teaches you to never hide your love for some one and I agree with that.
romeo and juliet version. mo student review by mahed m........2007-02-20
The story is about 2 young people who are in love. And there parents hate each other, and that effect show much time spend together, I personally think that your parents have an effect on how u live. But I guess in Verona that's not how it works. But I personally think the movie is better than the book. Because it is shorter and I don't have to pay attention on it.the setting takes place in Verona.
stupid student review by gabriel c.......2007-02-20
Romeo and Juliet is a story about to lovers that meet at first sight. The biggest problem they have together is that both of the families have been fighting and hate each other since they both have been born. It all started when Romeo been depressed ever day moping around and feeling sad all of the time because he loved Rosaline and she did not love him back. So one day Romeos cousin told him about this party and that Rosaline would be there so they left and Romeo saw Juliet there and followed her to her house and both exchanged thoughts about each other and decided that they will get married but secretly. So they had to come up with a plan to pretend that Juliet was died so the can get married and the planned failed and they both ended up killing themselves. Play was very stupid it sucks no one should read it because there is no point of reading this because all this play is taking up your time.

Book Description
Here are the books that help teach Shakespeare plays without the teacher constantly needing to explain and define Elizabethan terms, slang, and other ways of expression that are different from our own. Each play is presented with Shakespeare's original lines on each left-hand page, and a modern, easy-to-understand "translation" on the facing right-hand page. All dramas are complete, with every original Shakespearian line, and a full-length modern rendition of the text.

Helper for Understanding.......2007-09-06
I bought this book for my high school Shakespeare class and found it to be the most helpful thing. With this book, you get a feel for what Shakespeare was saying in a language that you can understand. With my other Shakespeare books, I had to wait for my teacher to explain to us just what had happened in the lines we had just read. When I used this book, I understood the material before it was explained to me. I recommend this to anyone taking an Intro to Shakespeare class.

Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare Made Easy; Parallel Edition).......2006-12-22
This was a great resource while teaching "Romeo and Juliet" last year to my English 1 students. I was able to explain the more difficult passages to them as we read along in the book. I wish that I had the money to purchase this book for all of my students. I plan to use it again this school year.
Romeo and Juliet (shakespeare Made Easy; Parallel Edition).......2006-08-13
Book arrived first of the three ordered at the same time. Book was in excellent condition.

No Fear Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet.......2007-03-09
I purchased this book for my freshman daughter, who is in Pre-AP English class. She says it has made reading and understanding Romeo and Juliet easy.
NOW I get it!.......2005-12-24
Echoing the review below...this helped me understand many things I was missing - even in other "helper" versions. After a few run-throughs of the "No Fear" side, you're ready for the "Real Shakespeare" side. Fabulous for students...of any age!
No Fear is the best Shakespeare Ever.......2004-06-30
This is only partially a review of the story, but mostly a review on how much I love the No Fear series. It's SO useful. You have Shakespeare on one page, and the 'translation' into modern English on one page. I understand Shakespeare so much better now. I thought I understood Shakespeare when I read version where you have a footnote at the bottom saying what 'grandshire phrase' or something means. I did get the gist of it, but now I understand what the characters are saying and feeling, and I get all the little jokes. I can appreciate Shakespeare now, which was impossible before (then again, I'm only 12, it's probably easier for other people).
Not to mention in other versions I would read a little bit, glance down at the footnotes, read, glance down, re-read to find the word in the footnote, et cetera and it was very tedious. Now I just read a page of Shakespeare and then a page of modern, or vice versa. I do vice versa because then I understand how the character feels before reading the lines out loud, making this version very useful for putting on the play.
There is one problem. In most editions, you have various essays and notes. They don't have this in here. I don't take of stars for this because I personally never read the essays, but some people might.
Anyway, the story itself. Shakespeare is very poetic, and you can appreciate it more if you know what he's talking about. How ever, I hate 'love at first sight' with a burning passion. If you get over that, the characters and plot are engaging.
I read this because I was in the play. But this edition is so good I'm going to read other Shakespeare plays for my own enjoyment.

Customer Reviews:
Strong feelings both positive and negative........2006-07-02
I am very conflicted in my feelings about this play; there are very powerful reasons to rate it highly, and also very powerful reasons to rate it poorly. There are, really, NO reasons for rating it mediocre, and yet that's what I wind up doing, only because that is the balance between the great and the terrible.
On the down side, BECAUSE this story has the reputation it has as THE prototypical love story, I truly despise it because it is responsible for an incredible amount of grief in the world over the last 400 years or so. Who can count how many young lovers have come to grief because they unquestioningly accept the idiotic presumtion that this story is predicated upon, that two people who literally don't know a thing about one another, not even their names, can make eye contact across a room and fall in love? Not simply feel attraction or interest, but truly fall in love? Love so powerful that they will die rather than live without one another? Yet this story has so permeated the culture that it is almost universally accepted that this is what love is like, and even people who have never read this play or seen it performed have been influenced by this idiocy to the point of trying to live their lives as though this were truly what love is like. As the main promulgator of such misinformation about the nature of love, this book is guilty of causing more pain in the world than many war criminals.
And yet...blast it all, it's BEAUTIFULLY written. The language is fluid and musical even by Shakespeare's standards. Even though it is a tragedy, it is told with a trace of wry humor, as Shakespeare manages in only his very best work. I can understand why it has the reputation it has; the plot (once one accepts the ludicrous premise it is built upon) follows plausibly. If one ignores the damage that the play has done to the world's concept of what constitutes love, and rates it merely on its literary merits, it is clearly a 5-star effort, even when compared only to other Shakespearean plays.
Unfortunately, that's what makes it so dangerous.
Shakespeare as it should be..........2005-11-22
This is Shakespeare as it should be... no extraneous notes, no unnecessary stage directions, nothing but the text. If you are looking for anything that explains character, language, theme, etc. don't look here, as Shakespeare never wrote any of that. This is purely the text as-is.
As a theatre professor, I would rather have my students work with a text like this rather than one littered with useless commentary and biased notations. If you don't understand a term or reference, use the Oxford English Dictionary rather than the limp and limited notes available in many editions.
The play in my thoughts.......2005-04-25
This tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespear's best known plays. It shows how pride and grudges can cause tragedies so it is better to let a problem go than hold a grudge.
This story starts out with Romeo and his cousins walking around in the market place when all of a sudden Juliets cousins come by. They argue over a bit thumb and start to brawl. One of Romeo's cousins die and Tibalt dies as well.
Then there is a party in which Romeo decides to invade. He meets Juliet and falls in love with her. She ends up falling in love with him too but their love can't happen because of their families feud against one another. They decide to flee because she was going to be wed with someone else.
Juliet comes up with a plan that never reaches Romeo's ear. The plan was that she would take a poison that would put her in a deep sleep where it appears that she is dead. Romeo shows up and sees a stiff body of her loved one and he takes his own life with a poison bottle. Juliet wakes up and sees her lover dead so she takes her life away with a dagger. The priest shows up alon with the enemy families. They see what happened and decided not to have a problem between them anymore.
This is a simple summarry of the great play of Romeo and Juliet. It is a tragedy that something horrible has to happen in order for the families to figure out that their fight was unecessary.
This is a great play that everyone should know and should have the moral of this story in their minds when they have grudges.
Well worth the money........2005-01-23
Romeo and Juliet does not read as well as some other plays such as Hamlet. It must be seen to be fully enjoyed. Nevertheless, I would reccomend this edition of the play. It is dirt cheap, for the amount of content you recieve, it is well worth the money. I reccomended it, however I strongly suggest you watch the play first before reading it. I believe that only after you watch the play will you fully appreciate it.
Not my favorite.......2004-08-17
This isn't my favorite of all of Shakespeare's stuff. First of all, Mercutio is the best character, and he dies too soon. Second, I didn't really like Romeo and Juliet enough to care a lot when they died.
As for all the metaphors and allusions packed in, that's always interesting. I think people start Shakespeare with this play, because it's not as difficult as the other tragedies, which I suppose is a good idea. After this, go to Macbeth (the best!).

Your Child Can Read Shakespeare!!.......2006-08-15
I used this as an experiment to see if my 10-year-old and her 9-year-old friend could read and understand the storyline of a Shakespearean play. The verdict?? THEY DID!! I asked them to summarize the plot and they did it with total accuracy. What a cool thing!!
I loved this and you will, too!
A wonderful way to introduce Shakespeare to kids.......2001-04-24
As a homeschooling parent I was looking for a way to introduce Shakespeare to my kids (9 and 10) -- they have loved these stories -- which we read aloud and then discussed (plot, characters, themes, conflicts, setting, motivations, etc.) -- the verse is enjoyable and effectively incorporates selected passages from the original in a seamless way. My kids have also enjoyed the illustrations and writing samples (all by 2nd-3rd graders) included in each book. After we read R&J, we watched the old Zefferelli film version and my kids got much more out of it. We've also read the Evelyn Nesbit prose versions but they didn't "feel" like Shakespeare the way these do...I have already purchased the exisitng Burdett versions and hope she has others in mind (PLEASE do Merchant of Venice!).

Visually engages readers by placing the original dialogue on the left-hand side of the page, and a modern prose interpretations on the right. As a result, it is easy for readers to cross reference as they move through the play and finally "get" Shakespeare.

Try Barron's instead........2007-05-08
I honestly thought that this would be better. It's not completely useless, though.
Having read, and taught, the play several times, this edition wasn't so much for me, but rather, to lend out to students of mine who have come from an ESL/ELD background, and whose vocabulary and background knowledge of Shakespeare/Modern Brit Lit was limited.
In general, the _Side by Side_ text does what it says it will do, but little else. It could give more vocabulary help/translation and review questions. I've seen other publisher's efforts at side by side texts, and theirs are more detailed and, thus, helpful.
Great book...for leisure reading or for school!.......2006-08-28
This book is great, it sets aside the difficulty that comes with reading Shakespear's Old English, and it especially great for school kids who have to read the book in class. They can translate the old english and it makes the words easier to understand. It literally has the Old English on one side and New English on the other! Great buy...Great Price! If you have to read Romeo and Juliet for school I recommend this book...if you want to read it simply for fun I still recommend it!

Book Description
This lyrical tragedy of two star-crossed lovers and their feuding families is one of the world's most famous love stories. Books in this new, illustrated series present complete texts of Shakespeare's plays. However, the lines are set up so students can see the bard's original poetic phrases printed side-by-side and line-by-line with a modern "translation" on the facing page. Starting in the late 1580s and for several decades that followed, Shakespeare's plays were popular entertainment for London's theatergoers. His Globe Theatre was the equivalent of a Broadway theater in today's New York. The plays have endured, but over the course of 400+ years, the English language has changed in many wayswhich is why today's students often find Shakespeare's idiom difficult to comprehend. Simply Shakespeare offers an excellent solution to their problem. Introducing each play is a general essay covering Shakespeare's life and times. At the beginning of each of the five acts in every play, a two-page spread describes what is about to take place. The story's background is explained, followed by brief descriptions of key people who will appear in the act, details students should watch for as the story unfolds, discussion of the play's historical context, how the play was staged in Shakespeare's day, and explanation of puns and plays on words that occur in characters' dialogues. Identifying icons preceding each of these study points are printed in a second color, then are located again as cross-references in the play's original text. For instance, where words spoken by a person in the play offer insights into his or another character's personality, the "Characters" icon will appear as a cross-reference in both the introductory spread and the play proper. Following each act, a closing spread presents questions and discussion points for use as teachers' aids. Guided by the inspiring format of this fine new series, both teachers and students will come to understand and appreciate the genius of Shakespeare as never before.

Perfect!.......2006-05-13
I'm a high school freshman studying Romeo & Juliet and I cannot understand hardly any of it. I found this book at a Borders bookstore and I have been reading it and it is extremely helpful. There's a line-by-line translation that makes a ton more sense. Buy this if you're having trouble with R&J!

Book Description
The cast of this unabridged recording of Romeo and Juliet features Michael Sheen and Kate Beckinsale in the title roles, with Fiona Shaw, Norman Rodway, David Bradley and Frances Barber.
Book Description
"The permanent popularity, now of mythic intensity, of
Romeo and Juliet is more than justified," writes eminent scholar Harold Bloom, "since the play is the largest and most persuasive celebration of romantic love in Western literature."
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) based his early romantic tragedy on Arthur Brooke's 1562 poem The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet. Shakespeare's resulting masterpiece, in turn, has inspired countless retellings around the world in mediums that include literature, dance, stage, and screen.
"It is Shakespear all over, and Shakespear when he was young," declares William Hazlitt (1778-1830), acclaimed British essayist and critic, in his exuberant Introduction to this Modern Library edition.
"Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life; Whose misadventuríd piteous overthrows, Do with their death bury their parents' strife."

My "Romeo and Juliet" personal opinion.......2001-10-19
We like and sometimes didn't like this book. "Romeo and Juliet" is based in an "impossible " love. We recommend you not reading this book if you don't like romantic stories.
Also this book didn't like us because it was boring and very difficult to read. I understand that was Shakespeare language but for these new generations is very difficult. In the other way, we like it because the characters did everything for completing their dreams. We could see that Romeo did every thing for being with Juliet.
Thank you for giving us this place for expressing our ideas.
Romeo & Juliet.......2001-10-19
Romeo & Juliet takes place in Verona in Feudal times. In that times women weren't given any rights. They couldn't hold property or discuss with their husband. This is shown during the whole book. Another thing different from nowadays was the language. Shakespeare uses a language, which I can't understand. So, in some parts were I don't know what a word means, the book becomes boring. Shakespeare, in a way, wrote female characters more intelligent and reflective than male, which in those times, women were objects. The story has different little stories in it. For example; the quarrel between the Capulet's gang and the Montague's; the impossible love between Romeo and Juliet; the trouble that Romeo has in Verona after killing Tybalt; Juliet has to marry Paris but she doesn't want and discusses bravely against her father; these make the story more interesting and it attracts the reader until the end.
Romeo and Juliet.......2001-10-19
I think that this is a great book because it tells you how much two people can really love each other and they gave up their lifes for their love.
I have seen the movie version about Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and still love the book every time I revisit the story. Every word fascinates the reader into truly feeling the passion and tragedy of these two lovers. Even a character such as Tybalt Capulet won me over as far as description goes. Shakespearean writing is very much complex and confusing but it has a touch romance and anger which adds to the emotion of the story.
Is an excellent story for teenagers, read this classic book of love, hate and tragedy!
The famous star -crossed lovers.......2001-10-18
The play is about two star-crossed lovers, who cannot be together because their families, Capulets and Montagues, hate each other. They will do anything to be with each other, even if it means killing themselves. There comes a moment in the play where the only way out is committing suicide. And that was what Romeo and Juliet did. When Juliet found out the real identity of Romeo, she couldn't believe it: "My only love sprung from my only hate". The families really hate each other: "I hate hell, Montagues and thee" so Romeo and Juliet decide to keep their love in secret, the only ones who know are Friar Laurence and the Nurse. As everyone knows, the end, is extremely tragic. Juliet has no way out so she decides to pretend her death, but if it doesn't work, she is willing to kill herself: "If all else fail, myself have the power to die". As Romeo can't stand her "death", he also commits suicide. Juliet wakes up, sees him dead, and kills herself also. So both can finally be together.
That's why we think parents shouldn't interfere in their children's love life. Because if they do, their children might end as Romeo and Juliet. It's better to have them married with someone that you dislike rather than to have them dead. Love is always stronger so people do anything to be with the one they love.
A world of hate..........2001-10-18
The book's content is incredible. It has all elements an excellent drama piece should have. Suspense, love, romance, action, everything is included in this book. The only feedbacks are the ancient english it is written in. Anyway, I would say like it wouldn't 'stick' with modern english.
The plot is somewhat boring at first. The action begins when Romeo falls in love with Juliet, and Tybalt discovers it. In the climax, there is intense, non-stop action, when Romeo's Friar gives a sleeping potion to Juliet so she can escape from marrying, but Romeo has not heard about it. This great tragedy ends with the suicide of these two. It is a great book and I really recommend it for young and adults.
