Book Description
Holocaust survivor, trailblazing perfomer, pioneer producer, and hell-raising iconoclast, Genya Ravan takes readers on an unforgettable ride through a 40-year career in music. From the highs of being the lead singer in Goldie & the Gingerbreads, the first self-contained all-female band; touring Europe with the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Hollies; and working as the first female producer hired by a major record label, to the lows of harrowing recoveries from alcoholism, drug addiction, and cancer, Genya Ravan lived the rock and roll lifestyle to the hilt, barely surviving to tell the tale. Brutally honest, hysterically funny, and ultimately inspirational, Ravan tells her story as only she could.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Life of a Rock Queen.......2007-09-07
This book reveals a lot about life as a rock musician. Genya Ravan is a Rock & Roll Queen, and this book is a must for a peek into the 60's and 70's rock world. Genya lived it & tells it all, from her many incarnations as a musician with the FIRST all female rock band, Goldie & The Gingerbreads , lead singer of Ten Wheel Drive, solo artist, & record producer . If that isn't enough, how about starting your life as a prisoner of the Nazi's and escaping with her parents & sister, sharing beds & buses with Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck & others, and reaching the depths of drug addiction & surviving cancer. Genya Ravan is an extraordinary woman, and she tells honest tales that will make you see how it was for one of the original women in rock & roll.
So, her writing is just like the rest of her..........2005-07-12
You should read the book, if you were a fan of the Ten Wheel Drive. But you could read it, too, if you are just and simply looking forward to a great story. Just when it becomes incredible, commence to listen to some of her music (you wanted that all the time, you notice)...
It blows you away, no matter what we choose to write, here.
A Great Read For Rock Fans.......2005-04-12
This fascinating book covers the life of Genya Ravan, who, among other things, founded Goldie and the Gingerbreads, the first all female rock band that played their own instruments, fronted the ground breaking rock band with horns Ten Wheel Drive, recorded multiple solo albums and was the first female major label record producer. The story is an exhilarating roller coaster ride which begins in a concentration camp, takes you through rock stardom, drug addiction and finally recovery from cancer. Along the way many famous icons of rock history are described first hand and Genya's experiences should make for a real page turner for any fan of rock music as well as an inspirational story which can be appreciated by all.
Lollipop Lounge Memoirs of A Rock & Roll Refugee.......2004-09-24
This book is just incedible. I've been a fan of Ten Wheel Drives Brief Replies & her (just rereleased) Urban Desire & And I Mean it albums, but I was not expecting the intense story about to unfold before my eyes. Holocaust survivor, first all girl band, first woman music producer ect. Does it realy take a hit record to recognize a true original? You must buy this book & get blown away! Book Description
The first biography of Joanna Lumley, one of Britain's best-loved and most accomplished actresses whose outrageous, champagne-swigging, bee-hived hedonist Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous is acknowledged as one of the great TV characterisations of the nineties. For over four decades, since she became a top model in the sixties, Joanna has remained an endlessly fascinating figure and is now regarded as somewhat of a national treasure. Meticulously researched, the book draws on interviews with relatives, friends and co-stars to produce an astonishingly revealing portrait of one of Britain's most likeable stars.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-08-28
This book leaves a lot to be desired. The authors are far too enamored and protective of the subject of the book to be subjective and so the book reads like a teen magazine interview. A good biography fleshs out the details but this book just reads like it was someone's school project to write about Joanna Lumley.

Golden memories from golden girl Shirley Eaton (Goldfinger).......2000-05-19
The beautiful Shirley Eaton has written an impressive, fascinating autobiography that tells you everything you ever wanted to know about her life and about the classic James Bond film, "Goldfinger." Miss Eaton played the "golden girl" who was suffocated to death by gold paint early in the film -- her playful scenes with Sean Connery are among the best in the whole series of Bond films, and the image of her covered in gold paint is one of the icons of '60s cinema (landing her on the cover of Life magazine in '64). Miss Eaton tells all the behind-the-scenes stories of that film, making this book a must-have for Bond fans. What's more, she chronicles her own life and long career in witty, intelligent fashion, proving herself to be not just a lovely, talented actress but an inspiration for others. Especially fun are her reviews of other actresses -- Miss Eaton's critiques are insightful and on the money. If you don't know much about Shirley Eaton, you should, and this book is the best way to see what she's really like.
A "must" for film fans, movie historians & cinema students........2000-04-04
Actress Shirley Eaton examines her career and film history from the 1950s-60s, blending her memoirs with an insider's examination of the changing film industry and its many complications. Chapters do more than provide reviews of Eaton's experiences in film; they consider changing images of glamour and stars, and provide insights on fellow actors. Black and white photos pepper this coverage.
Book Description
This volume presents an original study of the visual and literary aesthetics of influential modernist women writers, in particular Virginia Woolf, HD (Hilda Doolittle), and Dorothy Richardson. Maggie Humm focuses on the neglected (often intimate) domestic photographs of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; on Woolf's essay "The Cinema" in the context of cinema journalism by other modernists; and on the influence of photography on Woolf's Three Guineas, her short visual fictions (particularly "Portraits"), and her modernist essays. Humm examines how modernist women explore a freer range of aesthetics than their male counterparts by looking at not only what has been called women's work at the margins of modernity, but also at what might be called the even more marginalized material within those boundaries-photo albums and image-texts.
More than one thousand of Virginia Woolf's uncatalogued photographs, and a similar number of Vanessa Bell's, have been sitting in archives scarcely touched until now. Modernist Women and Visual Cultures makes many of these photographs available for the first time. Both the photographs and this fresh analysis will prove fascinating to anyone interested in the many cultures of modernism.
Book Description
In a world turned upside down by tragedy, Nell Stroud, fresh out of Oxford University, ran away to the circus. Constantly moving from town to town, surrounded by trapeze artists and clowns, grooms and third-generation show people, she immersed herself in their hard, marginalized, miraculous lives. And gradually that world became more real to her than the one she had left behind. Josser is her story and theirs.
Customer Reviews:
Gritty, Sympathetic.......2003-08-24
As a former circus performer and trouper myself (20 years in the business) I found Ms. Stroud's book an enjoyable read. Her descriptions of life on modern English circuses could apply here in the US. Her chapter on the hypocrisy of the animal rights fanatics in Great Britain in regards to the presence of horses in the circus and their apparent lack of interest in the use horses in other aspects of human activities to me was one of the most interesting chapters in the book. Circus life is a tough one and not for the weak -- they just don't last. If you want to find out what it is like day to day with tented circuses, especially British shows, in this age when, through the actions of uncaring, unknowing and unreasoning organizations and individuals dedicated to the demise of the circus, the circus is relegated to the fringes of society, this is a must read. If you think the circus is all pretty girls, cotton candy and the clowns, read this one!
Run Away to the Circus.......2001-07-07
Nell is a bit different from the rest of us - unlike those who fantasize about running away to the circus, she did.
'Josser' is a term used by circus people to describe those who aren't from circus families but work in the circus - like Nell. It's not exactly a compliment - to Nell's credit she stayed in the circus for three years before writing this book and starting a new circus of her own. If you ever wanted to know what's it like to actually live out a fantasy, read this...
Nell writes very well, and the book in that way is a pleasure. It's also sad though, since much of it is about her mother, who was brain-damaged in a riding accident a few years before the events of the book took place, and about Nell's efforts to come to terms with that.
A moving and inspiring read.
Book Description

This extraordinary guide features dozens of personal interviews, entertaining anecdotes, and personal reflections about the inner workings of the movie industry. What's more, the book includes each woman's filmography and clearly describes the tasks and responsibilities of every crew member who works on a film. Well-documented and visually stunning throughout, the dazzling photographic portraits of the women in this book are all shot by renowned international photographer Mika Manninen in collaboration with Helena Lumme. Customer Reviews:
Originally found this in the library, but it's the kind of book one should OWN.......2007-06-23
I've always been interested in theatre and movies, but when I was a kid and even in my mid-thirties, even though I've published books, getting involved in movies seemed like suddenly wanting to become President of the United States. So I bought this book and refer back to it whenever aspects of producing an indie film seem daunting. This book's beautiful and great. GIRL DIRECTOR is another fun book (although originally for little girls). So you should buy this book if you can afford such a beautiful hard cover photograph book, and support the authors so publishers know we're out here and interested.
An invaluable 'how-to' book for PA's to Producers.......2002-04-25
As a woman in film school at USC, I craved books like this. Usually what I found was dry text giving me a history lesson, accompanied by some poorly reproduced photos. I opened Great Women of Film and discovered something completely different. This is a book that wants to inspire its readers, through its variety of subjects, presented in bold and evocative portraits, with interviews chock full of realistic advice and lessons learned. There are no stories of nepotism or unearned breaks, each of these women took risks, worked hard and fearlessly dedicated themselves to their crafts. These are woman in front of and behind the camera, directors, writers, set decorators, producers, cinematographers, and special effects artists. As I read, I wished each woman could be my mentor, then I realized that's exactly what this book offers--the advice, wisdom, and can-do encouragement of accomplished women who want to see more of us out there with them. The film industry may still be a male-dominated world, but I would pay double to see a movie whose crew was made up solely of these Great Women of Film. Oh, and the book concludes with an index of resources, from schools to non-profits to guilds and unions that exist to help women in film.
Inspiring, inspirational, and informational.......2002-04-13
As a woman who is about to embark on the exact same journey this book is all about, I found this text so encouraging. It has become my second Bible. Helena Lumme brings together a mix of inspiring women in tbe film industry. Their insight and experience in the film business is not only refreshingly honest, but inspirational as well. From the early days of film making to the present, women have been a major part of the moviemaking process. It makes me proud to not only be a woman but hopefully become a part of a wonderful legacy of a daring and courageous women. The information is all encompassing to the passion they each feel about not only their work but the journey they took to get there. Mika Manninen photography not only puts a face on most of these unseen women but also captures their very soul in the lens. My heartfelt thanks go to not only Lumme but the women she interviewed for this piece.
Beautifully Intense.......2002-04-03
At first glance, it's a tasteful coffee table addition. Upon closer inspection, it gets intense. The photos, more than mere portraits, are actual tableaus of each subject acting out their careers (in all aspects of filmmaking) in a thought-provoking way. Either in a fantasy setting or an actual on-the-job setting-- sometimes whimsical, sometimes confrontational-- it's apparent that each subject worked with the photographer and author closely to create a unique representative visual statement. This, in union with the insightful written profiles and savvy graphical layout, make for a book that joyfully celebrates the previously little-known world and work of women in film production and the progress they will continue to make in the future.
Great Women, Great Words, Great Photographs.......2002-04-02
I just can't say enough about this book. It's inspiring on so many levels. For some, it will give a glimpse into what it takes to make it in the movie business. For others, the photos will serve as a reminder that art and beauty are all around us! I love that the authors didn't just focus on celebrities (although there are several of those, too), but they found great women in a variety of interesting fields. The photos are breathtaking, especially the great shots of Jodie Foster--amazing! I highly recommend this book, as well as the previous book by these folks, "Screenwriters: America's Storytellers in Portrait."

Book Description
Fanny Kemble was born into the most famous acting dynasty of the London stage. Unlike her aunt, the legendary Sarah Siddons, Fanny did not want to be an actress. However, when her father, the actor-manager of Covent Garden, faced bankruptcy in 1829, her appearance as Juliet made her a star. Touring America in 1832, Fanny met Philadelphian Pierce Butler and left the stage for love. Once a wife, she learned, to her horror, that the Butler wealth came from a slave plantation in Georgia. Challenging the conventions of her day and her husband, she insisted on speaking out—and discovered that marriage could not contain the independent woman she had become.
Customer Reviews:
A Woman of Great Importance.......2006-02-25
Writer Rebecca Jenkins wonderful book on the life of 19th century actress and author
Fanny Kemble is definative. Her description of this period of theatrical history and background to the journey of Miss Kemble to America is superb. Her fascination for her subject is tangible, as is her admiration of this formidable woman who influenced the anti slavery movement profoundly by the power of her pen.She allows her subject to speak for herself - and what a voice !
Sex, Slavery and Fame in the VIctorian Age.......2006-02-23
Fanny Kemble was the Gwyneth Paltrow of the early 19th century: a beautiful, renowned young actress from a theatrical family whose flamboyant doings filled the newspapers and fed the gossip. Fanny was a hot commodity on both sides of the Atlantic, though she had serious reservations about fame--Princess Diana and Lindsay Lohan weren't the first celebrities to be hounded by the paparazzi and the tabloids. On stage, Fanny was breathtaking, an icon; offstage, she was a bright, funny, sexy woman who--of course--fell in love with all the wrong men.
Rebecca Jenkins' sparkling biography tells not just Fanny's life story but conjures up the racy world of London acting, the drawing rooms of Philadelphia, and the steamy outrages of Georgia's plantations. Jenkins brings a novelist's craft to the story of a woman who played Juliet in the theatre and a slave mistress in real life. Her writing is both intelligent and vivacious and her research is impeccable. The book is a great page-turning read, too.

Product Description
Ellen Terry (1847-1928) rose to fame as an actress in the 19th century, when her stage partnership with Henry Irving at Londons Lyceum Theatre drew capacity crowds. She was notorious for flaunting the moral code of her day, marrying three times - first, at 17, to the painter G F Watts (who sent her back to her parents after a few months with a sum of £300 a year so long as she shall lead a chaste life) - and then living with her lover, Edward Godwin by whom she had two illegitimate children. A perfectionist on stage, she was cruelly forced to continue to act beyond a point she found appropriate in order to earn enough money to support her children: Look at me, 61 and still doing one-night stands, she said to a friend. As her sight and memory worsened, and her partnership with Irving ended, her acting career closed. She reinvented herself as a lecturer, touring Britain and America speaking on Shakespeares heroines.
Book Description
Fame--something many people long for, but very few ever achieve. Millions have dreamed of being surrounded by adoring fans, touring the globe, and making the big money. But as we discover in this book, living the high life sometimes is not all it's cracked up to be. MARRIED TO A ROCK STAR chronicles the challenges and successes of Shemane Nugent, the woman married to one of rock 'n' roll's most legendary guitarists, Ted Nugent.
Throughout their relationship, they have had to deal with the hardships that go hand in hand with being famous. Shemane Nugent presents the truth about the unique conflicts that celebrity couples face, and what really threatens to tear apart the bonds that unite them.
MARRIED TO A ROCK STAR will enlighten you about what takes place behind the scenes of a rock star's mythical life, both on and off the stage. Unlike other celebrity marriages, this couple has managed to persevere. Partly because of the challenges they've had to overcome along the way, their affection for each other has been renewed and strengthened. This book details how a rock 'n' roll wife has managed to stay sane, while still blissfully wrapped in the arms of her man.
Customer Reviews:
Married to a Rock Star.......2006-08-15
Shemane's look at the backstage life, trials and tribulations of stardom is insightful and runs the gamut from joyous to sad to encouraging. Her honest writing style, with she bares her soul and lays open personal tragedy and triumph for the world to see, is gutsy but refreshing. In the end she shows us that relationships are meant to last and should light a fire under anyone who isn't trying to make the most of their own relationship.
Why I like Shemane.......2006-05-13
To be honest, I'm not an official fan of Ted Nugent and previously didn't know a thing about the whole Nugent Empire, so this review is about as objective as it gets.
I picked this book up out of curiosity, not sure what I'd find. Scandal? Sermons? Grandstanding? A recipe for Squirrel? Nope. Instead I found a woman who is not that unlike most of us wives who get caught up in the lives of their husbands. She even mentions at one point feeling like she lost herself, and that was something I could identify with.
What's admirable is that she has without question found herself again. Granted, she's still part of the strong ocean current that is Ted Nugent, but she was smart enough to learn along the journey and come out better for it. Now she's a woman simultaneously humbled and strengthened by adversity who has a clear view of her priorities. She's gone from a girl swept away to a force to be reckoned with.
So impressed was I that I'm kicking around the idea of participating in the Nugents' Queen of the Forest program. Keep in mind that I'm pretty far from a God-fearing Christian (Agnostic hippie), nor do I think I can willfully kill an animal without fainting, but reading Shemane's book peaked my interest...gave me a little something to think about. I believe I could learn from her. :o)
A Mighty Yawn !.......2005-07-23
Mrs. Motor City Madman's book was stale before it flopped off the presses. The sole purpose of a "tell-all" is to have something to tell, and Nugent has absolutely nothing worth saying. After all,she married a drug-free church-going republican,so go figure where this book is headed. Boooorinnggg!!! Add the fact that before she married Nugent she didn't do a damn thing herself! I don't take displeasure in this book because perhaps our politics don't match (and believe me,this broad can PREACH!) but simply for lack of anything worth reading. Hey lady, stick to the gory cookbooks...
other reviewers are idiots.......2004-12-12
This book speaks the truth to one of the many darksides to the rock and roll world. It took a lot of courage to write this book. If you are going to criticize anything, critique the way the book is written, NOT the lives of the people that it is written about. You either love Ted or hate him. Either way this book puts out a message in the too fast too soon world we live in and puts into perspective what is important, love and family. Get a clue!!
Disapointing Garbage.......2003-07-22
I bought this book on the recommendation of Sean Hannity of Fox News' Hannity and Colmes- someone that I typically respect very much.I ... read it on my honeymoon. In a nutshell- it is mostly her going on and on about all the celebrities she and Ted hang with, all the travel they do, all the animals they like to hunt and eat, and how the majority of us are headed straight for hell. Content wise, the book is inconsistent, disappointing, and teases you into thinking it is headed towards a climax but falls short. For example, she talks about how her health failed last fall at the beginning of the book and she never comes back to explain why. She barely touches on the affair that Ted had basically saying that she was hurt but they got over it and are now much better- never really explaining, for example, HOW they got over it. As a newleywed a lot of what drew me to this book was seeing how they got over their major problems but that never happened. It does get very obnoxious also her going on and on about "Ted's strong arms" and her saying how she really didn't like going hunting in Texas for their Honeymoon but then backtracking saying "It was ok, because I was with Ted". She also talks about how awful it is that some women dress and act provocitavely and alter themselves to make themselves more appealing to men. She later mentions that she had a boob job. Pretty big hypocrite if you ask me. Long story short, I was expecting a more insightful more raw and empowering account of maintaining one's identity while being married to such a character. Instead, I found a combination trashy romance novel, political soapbox and whinefest.
