The book was really helpful in pointing out weaknesses of enemies and where i had to go to next, as well as timed extras for hidden relics.

5 out of 5 stars Lara Croft Tomb Raider Anniversary: Prima Official Game Guide.......2007-07-28

I'm fans of Lara Croft "Tomb Raider" and already I've all the collection of games thanks ot amazon, the Prima Official Game Guide is the better as a support, thus I will find all the secrets in the game.

5 out of 5 stars Lara Strikes Again!.......2007-07-22

After a dismal appearance in AOD Lara is back in all her glory...maybe even better than Legend! Anniversary is a wonderfully done revamping of the original story line and settings. I love the commentaries! Just wish there were more outfits to unlock.

4 out of 5 stars Still Learning.......2007-07-14

First game of this type I've played Since 007 Nightfire game came out years ago, still trying to figure out the controls for certain actions and had to purchase the Strategy Guide for some answers, otherwise it's enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......2007-07-12

I have previously purchased Prima Guides because I liked them the best. This is no exception. The information contain within is invaluable in knowing every aspect of the game. Prima does it again!

NEW ADVENTURES BASED ON THE WORLD’S BESTSELLING VIDEO GAME

After completing a near-fatal mission in the mysterious cloud forests of Peru, Lara Croft flies to Warsaw to tackle her next assignment–and finds herself in the middle of an epic battle for the ultimate power.

Reuben Baptiste needs Lara Croft’s help transporting precious cargo. But before Reuben can reveal any details, he is murdered–and Lara signs on with Reuben’s employer, the mysterious Order of the Bronze, to avenge his death. The Order shares with Lara its greatest treasure: a bronze android, thousands of years old, with uncanny abilities. But the android is crippled, missing a leg, and whoever finds that leg will gain astonishing powers. Hot on the trail is Lara’s nemesis, Lancaster Urdmann, now working for an unknown employer with strange abilities. As Lara jets from Siberia to Australia to Rio de Janiero, she is drawn into an age-old conflict of secret societies, intrigue, and death. . . .

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2007-01-09

While the first Tomb Raider novel was better, Man of Bronze was still pretty good. It's odd, because the movies are pretty weak and the games are only so-so, but the Tomb Raider novels are generally a lot of fun. And you don't exactly equate Lara Croft with reading, or at least I don't. But a good fun yarn perfect for a few days' distraction.

4 out of 5 stars ok.......2005-07-06

Out of the other Tomb Raider novels I have read, this one was the best. The storyline was better, and it seemed to capture the feel of the games more than the others. But at some parts it was confusing. The cover shows Ekhardt (Angel of Darkness), but he isn't even mentioned. Also, reading "New Strategy" a gazillion times gets a bit boring.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2005-02-04

I found The Man of Bronze to be an OK read. It was light and entertaining. It was also much longer than most light and entertaining books, which was a nice difference.

I will agree that the author's descriptions of events were strained, but his descriptions of items were quite good.

I found the dialogue to be terrible though. Lara said 'New Strategy.' about 7 times during the book... three times in the same fight.

Characterization was also strained. Lara and her typical friends that were highly expert commandos, but kept getting taken hostage.

I would also like to point out that Mr. Gardner missed a couple of technical details that were jarring to one in the know. For example, the Mi-24 Havoc Attack Helicopter has wheels instead of skids and is heavily armored.

All in all, a good, if quite light read. I will say that it kept me turning pages until the end.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been great, but deliberately is not.......2005-01-18

This book could have been great, but the author chose not to make it so. First I want to deal with the technical side, which is generally very good. The format is a bit like a computer game: each chapter title is a specific location. The descriptions are vivid and exact. They are not quite graphic. However, Lara's commentary when she is fighting can sometimes be a bit disturbingly blunt and callous. With that said, most of her commentary adds to the story and is in character. The general dialogue is good. The action scenes are excellent, and sometimes very creative.

The area where the book is flawed is the treatment of the story. The first quarter of the book is an excellent beginning: despite prodigious efforts, her friend is killed, and Lara is offered the chance to both help a (hopefully) good secret society reclaim its artefacts and get revenge. The last quarter of the book is the endgame of a battle spanning millennia, and is a pretty good conclusion to the story. The half the book in between is typical get the artefact, elude the bad guys tomb raiding. We know it's typical because the author says so right in the text. Whenever a scene is a standard type in the adventure genre, such as Lara gets the artefact and the bad guys take hostages, she points out in irritation that this is what always happens to her. She complains about clichéd dialogue too, even when she says it. Also, there are extinct monsters included pretty much because it's a standard feature of the games, with the barest justification for them in the story. Finally, Lara's attitude is that the tomb raiding is a boring slog she is forced to endure while she would rather be doing something else. Her negative attitude sucks the life out of the adventure.

This could have been an excellent book. The author intentionally made it otherwise. That leaves me feeling quite frustrated, much more than the enjoyment I got from the decent last quarter of the book. I cannot recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars A good game novel for what it is.......2007-06-10

Awful writing, terrible character development, painfully contrived plot, no substance whatsoever. In short, exactly what you're looking for in a novel of this type. It's purely fun to read. You will not find any great revelations about the Lara Croft character or studies into the heroine's psyche. It's clear that the novel was written by an American, as the more British aspects of Lara are dealt with somewhat ham handedly, but this is forgivable. It's hardly worth reading unless you have an interest in the Tomb Raider series, and it is defiantly not a good entrance point into it. All in all, read it if you're looking for a taste of that Tomb Raider thrill during a long flight or a day by the pool.

3 out of 5 stars It's Croft versus Cthulhu.......2005-01-18

Or the Cult of Cthulhu, at least. After rescuing some priceless artifacts stolen from Iraq (a laughable and tasteless way to get the story rolling), Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, finds herself caught up with yet another dangerous cult. It seems that someone is trying to resurrect an ancient, proto-religious following called Mene (or The Numbered) and is willing to kill any and all that get in the way of doing so. What makes the situation personal is that an old friend, Alison "Ajay" Harfleur, who wanted nothing more than to be exactly like Lara, has fallen in with the reforming Mene. The Tomb Raider and Ajay's jilted fiance, a mechanical armed behemoth nicknamed Borg, give chase. Despite the promising concept rooted in Lovecraftian lore, I found this outing a tad slow and wordy, focusing less on the action and more on the character (as opposed to The Amulet of Power, which was all action and NO character development), but it had some cool monsters and an exciting finale, with Croft facing off against a bonafide "Deep One." Tomb Raider fans should enjoy it. I just hope that the third book, The Man of Bronze, will be the proverbial charmed one - a pitch perfect blending of action and character.

4 out of 5 stars A good, light Lara Croft story.......2004-10-14

This is a good though not spectacular Lara Croft book. The characterisations in general were very good. For the first third the characterisation of Lara seemed a bit odd to me. She was portrayed as considerably more of a typical English Lady than I have ever pictured her. She was also depicted as having a fan club and being some sort of celebrity. I am more of a movie fan than a games fan so I do not know whether games fans would find that odd or fitting. At any rate, that section was still well written. After it the action really starts. The action scenes are written in a clear style with lots of dramatic action. Some of them might not pass muster if they were in a more realistic book, but they are very entertaining regardless. Lara also has several companions who come across as fleshed out, interesting characters. The fighting is left to Lara, while these characters fill out very appropriate roles of their own in the story. There is even a bit of philosophy about the nature of reality versus the perception of it. One thing I did find objectionable, and I must warn that this is a bit of an ending Spoiler, was that Lara found reasons not to kill her main opponents, but the author gave them gruesome deaths anyway. That was rather unnecessary. All in all, this is a light action adventure story. I would not recommend it on its own, but I would to any people already fans of Lara Croft.

5 out of 5 stars Seriously excellent Lara Croft Novel!.......2004-10-11

This one is much better than the other I read and really provides nice depth to Lara. I'll keep this one and read it again. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars a nice read.......2004-08-17

when doing a lecture, lara is approached by a man who tells her that his fiance is missing and would like the tomb raider's help. his fiance use to be a good friend of lara's so of course she agrees and off they go to peru in search of her. on their travels and journeys they find a mysterious cult that has been forgotten for cenuturies with buried secrets that are best left buried.

this book will keep you coming back for more even though the action scenes were a little dull. but if you are crazy about this series you will definitely like the book.

Lara's Book is a love letter from definitive Gen X scribe Douglas Coupland to definitive Gen X pinup girl Lara Croft. The buxom star of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II is idolized in both words (Coupland provides a work of fiction about Lara and waxes poetic about his feelings for her and her unique stardom) and pictures (literally thousands from digitally rendered images of Lara in a polo uniform to handmade drawings by her legions of fans). Coupland's story, "Air Tibet," illustrated wonderfully by Kris Renkewitz, is tons of genre-hopping fun, and his description of his obsession with Ms. Croft is singular and evocative of the freestyle interludes of Generation X.

If you're feeling a little weird about owning a glossy-paged, coffee-table-worthy pinup book dedicated to a video game, Lara's Book justifies itself by containing complete strategy guides for all the versions of Tomb Raider. Anyone interested in game development or the minutia of Lara's workstation-induced birth will find the Core team's account of Tomb Raider's development entertaining. Did we mention that it has thousands of pictures of Lara Croft? --Andrew Boscardin

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars And Just Wait Until Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft !.......2001-03-30

This book actually touches on two favorites of mine. Douglas Coupland is the author of two of my favorite books - Generation X and MicroSerfs. Tomb Raider is my favorite gaming series and I just adore Lara Croft. She is the coolest. This book combines a tribute to Lara and a walk-through of the Tomb Raider Games - I believe through Tomb Raider II. Now, anyone who's ever played TR knows how rockin' cool Lara Croft is. This book contains excellent renderings of our favorite adventurer. The overall book quality is very good - glossy pages and very well presented. There's a lot of look at but if you enjoy the series, then this is a must have. And just a reminder - as all Tomb Raider fans know - The Tomb Raider movie - starring Angelina Jolie ( they couldn't have made a better choice ) as Lara Croft - opens on June 15th 2001...I know I can't wait. Best Regards, turtlex

1 out of 5 stars I'm a Lara fan, but this book doesn't do much for me........2000-08-25

This book is mostly fluff, little substance. It looks like the bulk of the effort went into trying to be fancy with images download from the web. The walkthroughs are printed in multiple fonts--which makes them tough to read. There are much better guides available anyway. This book could have been much better. I was very disappointed. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Summary in three words:"Avoid this book"!.......1999-10-09

I am a big fan of Lara Croft, and try to get everything that has to do with her, most of 'em are good. BUT this book under review "Lara's Book" I hate! This book is not worth the paper that it is written on! The guides are inaccurate and confusing to read -- if you want a good walkthrough get "The Tomb Raider Official Strategy Guides" by Zach Meston, which are put out by Dimension Publications. The pictures (the only worthwhile thing about the book) can be found in other sources -- calenders, websites and so on.Finally the story . . . put me to sleep. Good night, ZZZZZZZ!

1 out of 5 stars Sexist videogame characters suck........1999-07-07

I really like Douglas Coupland's writing--I've read Microserfs, and it's a great book, but what is THIS all about? A super-long fan book about a videogame character that looks like a generation-X pornstar? I'd be almost less surprised to hear he'd written a book about the Spice Girls. Yuck.

5 out of 5 stars I know exactly how Coupland feels about Lara.......1999-06-09

In my mind's eye, I picture Lara back-flipping and gunning down the giant Atlantean mutant in Natla, the last level of Tomb Raider. If it wasn't for this book I wouldn't have completed Tomb Raider I, II or Unfinished Business.

5 out of 5 stars READ A BOOK BAD REVIEWERS!! .......2007-08-09

You people are tripping who say this item is bad and i think the only reason some of you people think its bad, is because its probably the first book you`ve read since 1 st grade because you`ve been too busy playing video games =]. This book is filled with action and adventure and i highly recommend it. You guys will not be disappointed with this book! Its all you need in a good book.

2 out of 5 stars Average game novel, at best.......2007-06-10

If this were any other type of book it would have failed miserably in ever respect. But you can't hold campy game novels to the same standards you do actual works of literature. Even with this in mind, it's still not a good book. The plot is uneven, with enough holes and nonsensical twists to nearly kill any coherence it might have had were it not for the absolutely godawful exposition. Again, this could be sidestepped, but the central problem is that the author really doesn't demonstrate any knowledge of the Lara Croft character. She's not nearly intelligent enough, and doesn't that that Tomb Raider edge. If the names were changes, the author could have been writing about any female hero on the run. It's really tragic that this is an official book. Kind of a waste, even for a game novel.

      4 out of 5 stars Lara Croft.......2005-05-19

Lara Croft is a famous archaeologist who travels the world looking for lost artifacts. She turns up in Egypt even though she is believed to be dead. People believe she has found the lost amulet of Mareish. The amulet is supposed to give the one who has it great power. Some people long to posses it and others want it to stay lost forever. Will Lara Croft make it out of this adventure alive or die trying?
The genre of this book action/adventure. The main characters of this book were Lara Croft, Omar, Gafaar, Hassam, and Kevin. I liked this book and didn't want to stop reading it because it is an exciting book and seems like it will never end. When I finished the book I was kind of upset because I didn't want it to end.
I recommend Lara Croft: Tomb Raider the Amulet of Power to everyone who likes action/adventure books. People will like this book because of all the sudden turn of events.

      5 out of 5 stars a pretty good book.......2005-01-26

while digging through a tomb, lara is buried under it when the tomb collaspes. while she is recuperating, she is targeted by assassins and almost killed. they are assuming that she found a amulet that has been missing for 100 years. the book is about the race to find the amulet and all the parties that want to make sure that it is either never found or found. the book is action pack and a pretty interesting. i would reccommend it.

      3 out of 5 stars Raiders lite........2004-12-10

This original novel evidently starts where the first Tomb Raider game ended, with Lara Croft buried alive in the Temple of Horus. She is saved, but before she even has time to recover from her injuries enigmatic hitmen are trying to kill her. Her rescuer becomes her partner and the two are soon dashing across Africa searching for a mysterious amulet that everyone seems to think that she has. Can Lara Croft find the amulet and save her life? The Amulet of Power is the first original novel based on the video game series, none of which I have played - yet. My only knowledge of Lara Croft comes from the film series, but this is a nice, pulpy read. Packed with enough action and monsters to satisfy those looking for nothing else. Sadly the book fails to bring any dimension to Croft herself, she runs from one adventure to the next without feeling fatigue, hunger, thrist, or any kind of emotion. This changes at the climax, but it is too little too late. Still, the book shows that there is plenty of juice left in the franchise. Fans should enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! The movie followed the book very well too........2004-02-24

Long ago a meteor fell onto Earth with a magical, metallic form within it. Witnessing its power, it was forged into the (thought of) holy form of a triangle and a temple was formed to protect it. A city grew around the temple, The People of the Light were there. During an invasion, the nine planets aligned and the power of the Triangle was shown. Realizing no mortal should possess such power, the High Priest ordered it cut into two smaller triangles. One stayed at the temple. The other was hidden at the end of the Earth. However, the Craftsman who cut the Triangle in half secretly made a highly advanced device. It could serve as a guide to find the hidden piece, and preserve the Triangle's powers for future generations. It was a magic clock.

Lady Lara Croft was much like her father had been. Beginning with a clock he had hidden for her to find someday and tales he had told her as a child, she must set out to save the world. The Illuminati, a secret group of powerful people, were out to find the two triangle pieces before the planets aligned (which happened only once every 5,000 years). At her side was Mr. Hillary, her butler, and Bryce, her technician. Two tombs must be entered and survived or the world would belong to Manfred Powell.

***** I made that brief as possible, but left out much to do it. Even though the movie, as of now, has not been released, I can already tell that the book gives much more insight to Lara and the adventure in which she finds herself. However, many scenes have the potential to be much more vivid and exciting on the big screens! I found it to be a wonderful book! I plan to be in the theater, with a huge group of friends, on its first night out! *****

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT NOVELIZATION OF THE FEATURE FILM!.......2002-05-11

This book is great. It is just like the movie, only with a little more dialouge. There are even parts before Lara's dad died telling how he tried to stop the evil. The deleted scenes only able to watch on the DVD are in this book, and I thought that was great! The action level seems a little less than the movie. The book seems to just speed by the action and to the point. I didn't really like that factor. If you liked the movie, read the novel, it is GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars Really good for a novelization.......2002-01-12

Very good in fact. It adds alot to the movie. More fleshed out characters and such. It's only 6 bucks, so what do you have to ose? Another plus is the 8 pages of pictures featuring the amazingly beautiful Angelina Jolie.

      5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!!.......2002-01-03

This book was just.. WOW!! It was way better then the movie, b/c the movie can only put a certain amount of scenes, but the book you get it all! i loved all the stuff between lara and alex, if you are a lara/alex fan this book is definatly for you!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie Companion!.......2001-11-29

'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' is defintely my favorite action film. After seeing it twice in theaters, I decided that I had to get the movie novelization. I really loved this book. You get a little more description and more dialogue than in the movie. The relationship between Lara and Alex West is explored a little more and there is a bit more action. The novelization stays right with the movie, nothing is changed. The colored pictures fom the movie in the middle of this book were a great bonus. This is a fun and exciting read and if you loved 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' anywhere near the amount that I did, you'll be sure to love this book! You will enjoy it even if you haven't seen the movie!
