Intelligent GIS: Location Decisions and Strategic Planning.......2001-04-03
This text, explore and discuss the geographic modeling and how it is used to improve planning by providing spatial information, and uses examples taken from real situations. The books offers a bief introduction about local decision and planning in organizations, it dicuss applications in retail planning, including a chapter that focuses on the automobile industry, health-care planning and analysis, urban and water-resource planning, and financial services. The book's uses range form regression techniques and choice models to spatial interaction models and market indicators, it may be useful to suplement a second or third level geography course to emphatize some real-word applications of geography theory. The bok is an extraordinary resourse and it is readable.
Book Description
Everest adventurers and speakers Alan Hobson & Jamie Clarke believe life's "Everyday Everests" are harder to surmount than Mount Everest itself because they are longer-term. No one takes our picture or congratulates us when we get to the summit because there is no summit. The everyday mountains we climb keep getting higher and harder.
In this book, Alan and Jamie share the true story of their struggle to climb Everest. It is far more than a mountaineering tale, it's a real-life story - a story of hopes and dreams, of tragedy and tenacity to which everyone can relate. Mostly, it's a story about triumph - a triumph of the human spirit. It will help you climb your own Everests - whatever mountains you are climbing in your own life.

An Entertaining and Powerfully Thought-Provoking Read.......2006-10-17
Simultaneously, "The Power of Passion: Achieve Your Own Everest" is both entertaining and self-developmental. Much like a Steinbeck novel that fully captures our attention, when I read Hobson and Clarke's reflections of their Everest adventure I felt more like I was there with them at their cold high altitude camps than here as a reader in the comfortable warmth of my cozy den. On the other hand, and at a deeper level, as their subtitle "Achieve Your Own Everest" implies, Hobson and Clarke are writing about every human's pursuit of their deepest (tallest) dream. As their title implies, "The Power of Passion" is necessary to fuel our journeys toward accomplishing our dreams. While all the current business achievement hype acknowledges our need for preparation, relationship skills, and execution, Hobson and Clarke found their biggest and most enduing obstacle in their differences of values. Additionally, their underlying struggle, "were they leaders or were they climbers" is an interesting metaphor for a common phenomenon that we see in today's controversial business and politics.
While I was tempted to read "The Power of Passion: Achieve Your Own Everest" in a single setting, I found great value in reflecting on each chapter's situations...and asking myself, "how were their situations in their pursuit of summiting Mount Everest similar to the struggles that each of us experiences in our own everyday lives." Interestingly, Hobson and Clarke's journeys and course corrections are applicable models for achieving our own interpersonal and professional goals. I highly recommend this reading for professionals searching their way up the Mount Everest's in their careers.
Outstanding - Must reading!.......2003-07-14
Sorry, I never heard Hobson or Clarke speak, but have read their book which is OUTSTANDING! Although it's supposed to be about Mountain climbing, it's about reaching your own Everest in life and winning.I would love to hear these two speak in person. In the meantime I will enjoy re-reading this book to conquer my own Everest.Great book guys. Possibly the mst under-rated self help/motivational bookout there.
Awesome Powerful!.......2001-07-26
Ditto on what Rockford Illinois said: I heard Jamie Clarke speak and found him to be quite fascinating and was inspired to get and read his book, "The Power of Passion". The book was very good but not near as good as hearing Mr. Clarke speak in person. If you ever have a chance to hear him speak, don't miss it. If not that, read his book. It's more than about climbing a mountain, it's about striving to do our best, to try our hardest in what ever we do every day. Everyone has a "mountain". We each need to face the challenge and strive to do our best to conquer it. ********** I bought multiple copies of this book to hand out to friends! All of my friends now own a copy, so I want to share this with all of my Amazonian friends! Enjoy!!!

Book Description
Future Washington is a collection of stories by noted science fiction writers from around the world, and the political spectrum, which looks at possible futures for the US capitol. Throughout the collection, Washington is faced with challenge after challenge, leading novelist and futurist Bruce Sterling to comment:
"
it sure was interesting that Washington is wrecked, drowned or comprehensively destroyed in practically every story in your collection."
But that's not really surprising, because the future (and any good stories) is expected to be full of challenge. The important thing to take away from these stories is how the residents rise to meet those challenges, be they the rise of theocracy or the waters of the Potomac.
Colleen Cahill (Recommending Officer for Science Fiction and Fantasy at the Library of Congress) wrote:
"(these) stories take us to a D.C. that might be, with visions both light and dark, containing destruction, growth, humor and serious thought
whether the US government is alive and well, transformed by time or a distant memory, all the stories include a hint of the D.C. of today, making this a book for those of us who have lived or currently live in or near the city. It is the great writing and interesting visions of the future that make this a work for any who enjoying good reading."

Clarification.......2006-08-16
The story "The Day of the RFIDs," alluded to in the Daniel Miller review as a highlight of the FUTURE WASHINGTON collection, was actually written by Edward M. Lerner.
Not as good as I expected it to be.......2006-08-05
I was kind of disappointed with this book, honestly--the stories are very hit-or-miss. The best one is by Kim Stanley Robinson, but it's an excerpt from a novel, not written for this collection--probably better to just read the novel. Another highlight is by Cory Doctorow, exploring the use of RFID tags and the Dept. of Homeland Security, although I felt like going up to him and whispering "Your ideology is showing". As for the others, some of them are amusing (particularly one near the end in which Democrats and Republicans have devolved into warring tribes--it reads like it was co-written by David Broder and Hunter S. Thompson), but only a few make a serious attempt at exploring an interesting future. More common are relatively shallow attempts at parody, such as one story in which Indiana real estate agents plant a nuclear bomb in DC and exploit the chaos to move the capital to Fort Wayne. Overall, the book doesn't have enough worthwhile material to make it worth buying. Check it out of a library for a few of the stories, but don't waste your time or your cash.
Is there a future for Washington DC ?.......2005-12-07
Future Washington contains 16 stories from a variety of authors most usually not found in anthologies. The stories posit many different futures for the DC but most are dark and distopian in one way or another.
"Primate in the Forest" by Kim Stanley Robinson, "Hothouse" by Thomas Harlan, "Civil Disobedience" by Joe Haldeman, all have the area suffering from one degree of global warming or another as background.
"Ignition" by Jack McDevitt gives us an idea of what can happen with fundamental religion take over. Paranoia takes over a computer geek in Edward M. Lerner's "The Day of the RFIDs" but is he really that paranoid?
Jane Lindskold in "Tgers in the Capitol" has the original designer of the capitol area who is not all that happy with what was done with his designs. "Hallowe'en Party" by Nancy Jane Moore is basically directions and instructions for a future party in the DC area (the directions are only slightly off from those you'd get if you lived in this security conscious area now).
"Agenda" by Travis Taylor, "A Well-Dressed Fear" by B.A. Chepaities, "The Lone and Level Sands" by L. Neil Smith, "Hail to the Chief" by Allen M. Steele, and "The Empire of the Willing" by Sean McMullen, all deal with politics and intrigue on one level or another.
"Mr. Zmith Goes to Washington" by Steven Sawicki has my favorite aliens (from sfrevu.com's Damned Aliens Column) drop in for a Senate Hearing. "Indiana Wants Me" by Brenda W. Clough gives a look at what could happen to the DC area if Congress moved elsewhere. "Human Readable" by Cory Doctorow deals with the concept of who has access to IT and will it be economic status blind. "Shopping at the Mall" by James Alan Gardner give us a view of what would happen if Americans just disappeared one day.
All in all, there are stories to make you laugh out loud, shake your head in frustration, dispair, and agreement. Those that make you think maybe you should pay just a bit more attention to what are leaders are doing FOR/TO us in DC. Every story is strong with character, place, and plot. It's a good buy.

This first United States paperback of By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept comes after huge worldwide sales of the novel of faith, romance, miracles, and the importance of following the heart's true path. The inspirational tale follows Pilar, a young woman from the Spanish countryside who, sparked by the teachings of a now-mysterious man she has known and loved since childhood, leaves her graduate studies and embarks on a spiritual pilgrimage through the Pyrenees Mountains and reevaluates her life and her future. Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho, author of the international bestseller The Alchemist, is considered to be one of the most widely-read Latin American writers in the world.
Book Description
A Fable About Opening Your Heart to Miracles
By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept tells of Pilar, a frustrated scholar looking for some greater meaning in the endless cycle of her days. When a childhood friend contacts her, she is surprised to learn that her former playmate is now a charismatic spiritual leader, someone revered as a miracle worker. She is even more astonished when he reveals that Pilar has always been his great love.
Confused by this sudden opportunity for a new chance at life, Pilar gradually comes to realise that the man she loves is being called upon to choose between her and his spiritual calling. As the suffering lovers travel through sacred sites in the French Pyrenees, the difficult choice they face offers a startling revelation about the divine and the redemptive power of love. Full of warmth and wisdom, joy and unexpected sorrow, their story is a magical celebration of the endless possibilities that life has to offer, and a fable about opening your heart to miracles.

LOVE IT!.......2007-09-17
I have this book since I am 16 years old. I've read it so many times and it always get me emotional... No matter what book they release, this is my FAVORITE BOOK EVER!
Poetic, Proseic, Imaginative, Spell Binding.......2007-09-04
Pilar grows-up becoming a lovely, strong independent woman! Her childhood friend has become some more handsome, charismatic spiritual leader, making use of his religion as a refuge from his raging inner conflicts. He is said to be one who is even able to heal persons!
This lovely crafted story begins like a poetic narrative until Pilar is introduced to the gripping surprise of her lover having become a Seminarian. His whole life has been turned into an adventure shaped by his studies and new committment! When the italicised poetry becomes more narrative, the story moves more quickly and has numerous fascinating twists and turns. "It's risky falling in love." Their love simply moves gradually into new adventures and amzing enw pictures of their interesting culture!
Although I had read early on THE ALCHEMIST by Coelho, this story grew more lovely and compelling the more I read. It is well-worth discovery as another winner by Paulo Coelho. In-spite of the reviews making far too much of its strong religion that Spanish flavor of Cathoicism is totally tempered by pictures of beautiful love-making!
As I discovered after reading other stories of Authur Golden, Memoirs Of A GEISHA and Rosamunde Pilcher, The Shell Seekers this story seemed to stay with me longer to become another model of poetic beauty and pictures an eternal love spanning this world and the one of the Great-Not-Yet! Gratefully from Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Book review.......2007-08-28
Excentlant book, a pretty fast read with lots of meaning.
I recomment Paulo Coelho as a writer one of my favourits
Wonderful!.......2007-06-09
I have been slowly finding time to read this book between grad school and work. Each time I begin I whish to have time to just sit and enjoy it. Today was that day as I awaited my tires to be mounted I sat in the sun and read this wonderful story. I saw so much of my own life reflected in the emotions, very well written and inspiring. I am passing it on to my mother so that she too can benifit from this work of art.
With all the praise why a 4 star rating? Well, although I truly love this story I was conflicted over some parts that just seemed to loose me. I read and reread certain passages just to get what happened. And still I found myself wondering too much with some odd unresolved feelings.
I loved the story I loved the dedication to the concepts of "LOVE and LOYALTY."
I recommend this book to everyone. As for me on to the next of his books...
Good Food for Thought.......2007-03-28
I read this book after reading Coelho's, The Alchemist. It is not as rich a story as The Alchemist but still worth reading. Coelho excels at writing his novels from a philosophical perspective. The two main characters have major life decisions to make and he does a fabulous job of taking the reader through the character's philosophical reasoning as to why they make the decisions they make. I truly enjoyed this book and plan to read more of Coelho's work.
