Customer Reviews:
Great for non-engineers too!.......2007-05-14
This book is so interesting to browse through. As a mechanical engineer I really appreciate it, and it comes in handy for getting ideas. Great illustrations and descriptions! I highly recommend it.
Inventor's Smorgasbord.......2007-02-21
I am a farmer who enjoys making machinery. I design my contraptions on paper, then using a CAD program to refine the designs. Having no training in engineering I am frequently using references such as "Machinery's Handbook" and "Moving The Earth" and "Mark's Standard handbook of Mechanical Engineering" and others.
I have to say, that Parmley's book is a treasure trove of information, with heaps of unusual ideas for common compnents such as O-rings, rubber balls, pipe connections, washers and many others, plus hard information about more complex components such as gearboxes, cams, governors etc etc.
This is a big book, with many pages (numbering within each section only), lovely clear diagrams, and enough but not too many tables, formulae and specifications. It can be browsed cover to cover, (as I am doing for the 2nd or 3rd time), open a page at random and be fascinated, or look up specific topics in the excellent index.
I have read the other reviews on this book, and clearly it is a valuable rescource to professionals. I can tell you that it is also a fantastic mine of information to the interested amateur.
Book content value.......2005-10-02
This volume contains the most comprehensive list of mechanical components and variations on any given theme that I've seen in one place. Additionally there are significant extensions to computation methods and overviews not found elsewhere. It is an extremely high value book.
Absolute Must.......2003-01-28
The last few favourable reviews cover my thoughts well, but I would like to add that this large volume far exceeded my expectations in terms of both depth of content and quality. This is an amazing value for anyone who works with mechanical components. While its focus is on illustrations of the components themselves, it also includes detailed explanations with graphs, formulae, etc. So it's also a how-to book of sorts. I also purchased a companion volume "Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook", which I also highly recommend.
A terrific book.......2002-02-15
Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components has lots and lots and lots of line drawings of machinery components. The drawings are clear and simple. Each is accompanied by a well written description, usually a few lines but longer if needed. An interesting book for anyone mechanically inclined. For engineers there are tables and formulas where needed. A great book.

This is the modern 8-shaft weaver's most treasured pattern resource! The 25 chapters are titled according to weave structure, and each begins with a thorough explaination of that structure and it's method of drafting notation. Black and white photos and drafts follow.
There are 765 patterns and samples from which to choose! As useful as a reference for 8-shaft weavers as Davison's Handweaver's Pattern Book is for those who use 4-shaft looms.
Product Description
The flex-shaft is an essential tool for the bench, and jewelers will often have several at hand. But too often those jewelers don't know how to take full advantage of the flex-shaft's capabilities. This book will help to change that. It offers insights and advice on how to choose the proper system and maintain it, as well as which accessories you need to accomplish specific tasks. In addition, you'll find "out of the box" ideas gleaned from the Orchid archives and the pages of AJM Magazine--all of which can help you to speed production, improve quality, and make your life a bit easier.

Wow, so many more uses for my flexshaft that I didn't realize. Easy to read. Well done.
Is this book worth purchasing?.......2007-01-03
This was a disappointing book purchase because the material is based on information that is readily available with the purchase of a flex-shaft. The price of the book is out of line with the value of information in the book. I do not recommend this book to anyone.

Audel Millwrights and Mechanics Guide
ASIN: 1574447211 |
Book Description
Rotating machinery is the heart of many industrial operations, but many engineers and technicians perform shaft alignment by guesswork or with limited knowledge of the tools and methods available to accurately and effectively align their machinery. Two decades ago, John Piotrowski conferred upon the field an unprecedented tool: the first edition of the Shaft Alignment Handbook. Two editions later, this bestselling handbook is still the most trusted and widely embraced guide in the field. The third edition was reorganized, updated, and expanded to be more convenient, intuitive, and to reflect the latest developments in the area. Dedicated chapters now discuss the basics of alignment modeling, each of the five basic alignment methods, and electro-optic methods. Significant new material reflects recent findings on detecting misalignment, machinery movement from offline to running conditions, multiple element drive trains, and specific information on virtually every type of rotating machinery in existence. Entirely new chapters explore bore and parallel alignment. Providing detailed guidance based on years of hands-on experience, the Shaft Alignment Handbook, Third Edition is a practical tool to help avoid costly shutdowns, dangerous failures, and early replacements.
Customer Reviews:
New Edition is Even Better.......2007-03-07
First some comments about the book in general. It's written by a working engineer who has spent a lifetime actually working in the field. He got into working on rotating machinery with an emphasis on alignment somewhat by accident. Then he developed his own expertise, and finally was persuaded to publish it in book form. This was done in 1986, twenty years ago. It has now been issued in its third edition that incorporates new techniques, new tools and as he incorporates his own additional learning.
The material covered here isn't covered in school. This is practical knowledge based on a lifetime of working with equipment out in the real world. The writing style matches. Mr. Piotrowski writes as he talks, one professional with a lot of experience talking to another who will be there one day.
Any maintenance man working in an industrial plant will quickly recognize the problems discussed here, and will find other nuggets of knowledge that will help him to identify other areas where he needs to re-think about a problem.
Highly recommended!
Definitive Text for Shaft Alignment Work.......2005-07-24
Quite simply, this is the definitive text for shaft alignment work. If you do any type of machinery alignment, you need a copy of this book. Just about every situation is covered in this text. The author does seem to have a bias against "laser" alignment devices, but other than this, there is little to fault in this book. Highly recommended.
Outstanding Machinery Alignment Book.......2005-06-17
There are very few books about machinery alignment. This is the best I have encountered for machinery alignment. The tried and true methods and techniques discussed in this book are what is used in the industry for large rotating equipment.
An added bonus of this book is the detailed history of rotating equipment and related alignment methods.
Rotating equipment engineers should consider having this book in your personal library.

Book Description
How-to-do-it guide to eliminating machine vibrations
One of the most common causes of severe machinery vibration is the misalignment of drive shafts and other components. Machinery Vibration: Alignment, by Victor Wowk, gives you a practical resource for aligning shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys and a wide variety of power transmission components in machines without further training. You get step-by-step procedures for balancing, resonance, structural vibrations, isolation, instruments, diagnostics, and trending. Many of the methods described require only simple tools, eliminating the need for a $20,000 laser alignment system.
Case studies covering everything from simple fans to high-speed turbines give you examples of real-world problem solving. You will find the extensive coverage of the FFT spectrum analyzer a valuable addition to this hands-on toolkit.

Minimum service manual.......2005-09-26
The manual says, "This manual has been specifically written and formatted for the amateur home mechanic." This description is correct. The motorcycles covered in this manual are at least 21 years old. Some parts are not available for these models. Owner's manuals are usually lost. Part of the attraction of older bikes is the lower cost, but hiring out maintenance can get expensive quickly. People who buy bikes this old should be prepared to do most repairs themselves.
This manual combines the essential information from both the owner's manual and a factory service manual, and does so at a fair price. People who are mechanically inclined will find the descriptions of the tasks to be quite direct. People who haven't worked on machinery before are likely to get themselves in trouble.
Comparing the Clymer manual with my official Suzuki manual for the GS650G is revealing. The Suzuki manual uses very clear line drawings. Clymer uses black & white photos, which were reproduced with a coarse screen and lack legibility too often. Suzuki explains, for example, how the carburetors work before describing maintenance procedures. Clymer goes directly to disassembly, and in less detail than Suzuki. To be fair, the Clymer manual has some details lacking in the Suzuki manual. Clymer also covers several models, and does so over a time span in which significant changes were made to the bikes . And the Suzuki manual, if it is still available, costs $62.
Anyone working on these motorcycles should become familiar with the GS Resources web site, at http://www.thegsresources.com/
Specific suggestions there go into greater detail than either manual in diagnosing and repairing problems that arise with these older, but still fine machines. The forums also give advice on finding replacements for parts that are no longer available from Suzuki, and on replacement parts that are sometimes better than OEM parts.
A confused hobbiest outlook.......2000-03-22
it is very indepth as far as explaining what to do.however more detailed pictures would have been a definite plus, I found it hard at times assertaining exactly where certain parts of the motorcycle were located. For a more advanced mechanic I'm sure that this wouldn't be a problem. But for the hobbiest, I hope in the next publication they would toss in an overall diagram explaining part location.

Pretty good, but no 5 stars.......2003-06-22
If you've seen the movie, then you've basically read the book. They fit closely (Tidyman wrote the book and the movie screenplay), but there are a few differences. Shaft is a good character, with his own ideals and views of life. He's not quite as hard-boiled as other private investigators (Mike Hammer, Jack Hagee to name a few), but he has his moments.
This book is a good read if you are a fan of mysteries, but especially if you like the private eye genre, then it's essential. Tidyman's description rivals other great authors of the genre, his dialoge reminds me of Elmore Leonard at times.
The only thing that doesn't give this book the fifth star is that it has too many slow moments, and takes a while for the book to get going.
it was very good.......1999-08-04
this book was quite possible the best book i have ever read, keeping in mind i have read all of the works by shakespeare and faulkner and hemmingway. This book just blew me away in its goodness. everyone must read it or else die
