Growing Up Gay in America: Informative and Practical Advice for Teen Guys Questioning Their Sexuality and Growing Up Gay

Book Description
Are you queer or questioning? If you are, this book is for you. Do you know someone who might be queer or questioning? If so, this book is for you, too. Or are you someone who just wants to learn more about what it's like to be queer or questioning? This book is a great place to begin. Discovering that you, or someone you love, might be GLBTQ is a revelation. Accepting it is a process. One thing that can help that process is information. This book can't answer all of your questions or counter all of the misinformation, misconceptions, myths, half-truths, and outright lies you might have heard about being GLBTQ, but it's a start.

Great for teens!.......2007-03-16
This is an awesome book. I bought several that I use with a group of high school students. It's very informative and easy to read. Also has step-by-step suggestions for coping with issues such as homophobia, harassment, and coming out. An invaluable resource.
Dealing with Teens? Get this!.......2004-12-06
This book is a must-have for any Library shelf that serves teens. It is written in a style appealing to teens and includes short, one or two page summaries of ways to cope with the many issues teens face when questioning their sexuality. It also provides excellent, current resources for teens, from crisis lines to 'safe' (moderated) chat sites. I especially enjoyed the section dealing with 'coming out' to parents and family. It provided experiences from other teens who have (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and also possible responses parents might have when a teen tells them he/she is gay. In addition, it listed possible, respectful ways to respond to less-than-accepting parents. A fantastic compilation of stories, insights, and resources for teens.
wonderful book.......2004-05-24
i remember being a pre-teen, leafing through many books written for young women that followed an "our bodies ourselves" format. these books were ok, but never what i was really looking for. i didn't want information on how to ask boys to dance or how to apply lipstick- i wondered where the chapters entitled "when you don't feel like the rest or the girls" or "but what if i don't like boys?" were.
what a great help it would have been to have this book! the format is "hip" but not patronizing. while this book affirms the importance of pride and self-respect in queer or questioning young people, it also devotes pages to the concerns and dangers many queer teens face (safe sex, how to begin dating, facing intolerance). transgender issues and stories have their own chapter, as do homophobia and coming out. descriptive paragraphs are broken up by small autobiographical blurbs by young people describing their experiences with the topic at hand, and by smaller essays.
this book is a great place to begin for youth who are GLBTQ, questioning, or who would like to better understand their queer peers and friends.

Product Description
The Queer Bible Commentary brings together the work of several scholars and pastors known for their interest in the areas of gender, sexuality and Biblical studies. Rather than a verse-by-verse analysis, typical of more traditional commentaries, contributors to this volume focus specifically upon those portions of the book that have particular relevance for readers interested in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues such as the construction of gender and sexuality, the reification of heterosexuality, the question of lesbian and gay ancestry within the Bible, the transgendered voices of the prophets, the use of the Bible in contemporary political, socio-economic and religious spheres and the impact upon lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Accordingly, the commentary raises new questions and re-directs more traditional questions in fresh and innovative ways, offering new angles of approach. This comprehensive, cutting-edge commentary is prefaced by an introductory essay by Ronald E Long. Contributors draw on feminist, queer, deconstructionist, utopian theories, the social sciences and historical-critical discourses. The focus is both how reading from lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender perspectives affect the reading and interpretation of biblical texts and how biblical texts have and do affect lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender communities. The commentary includes an extensive bibliography that directs the reader to a full range of literature relating to queer interpretation of scripture.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Worth Reading!.......2007-08-11
The very first light bulb gave off some light but certainly can't compare to the contemporary, energy saving light bulbs in common use today. This commentary deliberately does not give us a chapter by chapter and verse by verse format, which those following the Revised Common Lectionary faced with the challenge of weekly sermon preparation generally find more helpful. Overall this commentary feels more like a treatise on post modern, deconstructive theology and makes one wonder as to which came first the writer's politics or faith? Like most things "queer" it seems like there is a monochromatic approach -- ironic that the "rainbow nation" would paint with just one color.
Having said all this, this book is really worth having and reading (although why such a high price tag!) The Queer Bible Commentary is a start and does give off a bit of light...looking forward to seeing more work from this perspective that actually practically empowers those engaged in preaching the Gospel to all kinds of communities of faith.
Looking at the Bible Gaily.......2007-07-09
Guest, Deryn and Robert E. Goss, Mona West and Thomas Bohache, editors, "The Queer Bible Commentary", SCM Press, 2006.
Looking at the Bible Gaily
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
Of the several queer commentaries available of the Bible, "The Queer Bible Commentary" is the most complete. It is comprehensive and covers both the New Testament and the Old Testament. It deals with a wide range of hermeneutical issues, principles and strategies which must be employed in queer interpretation. It is complete so that even if we do not agree with what is here, we can find out where to go for better explanations. And above all else, it is the very first book to deal with the Christian and Jewish Bibles in one book. For that reason lone, it is indispensable.
The book does not take a verse by verse look at the Bible. Instead it focuses on portions of the Bible that have particular relevance for those of us interested in Gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans gender issues. It looks at the construction of sexuality and gender, the reification of heterosexuality and the matter of gay and lesbian ancestry within the Holy Books themselves. It also looks at the transgendered voices of the prophets and how the Bible is used in the contemporary world--politically, from the socio-economic view, and religiously. It likewise shows the impact it has on the modern GLBT communities.
New questions are asked and traditional questions are redirected in new and very innovative ways thereby offering new approaches.
Contributions come from a myriad of sources and ideas are drawn from feminist, queer deconstructionist, utopian theories, from the social sciences and from historical-critical discourses. The readings are focused from the GLBT perspectives and this affects our communities.
Included is an extensive bibliography that can be of great help in accessing the full range of literature which deals with a queer interpretation of the scriptures.
Of course all of this information does not come at a cheap price but if you are like e and want to know exactly what scripture tells us about the way we live, no price is too high to pay.
A personal note--since I have been researching the Joseph story there have been times when I did not know where to turn or further pursue information. This book showed me exactly where to go and what to read. I am now the proud owner of my own copy and it sits proudly on my desk ready to be opened at any moment.
Come to the well! .......2007-05-13
I have written two exegetical papers using the QBC. It's easy to use, clearly written and insightful. Liberating, thoughful and edgy enough! More!!!

Book Description
Imagine this: Five eminently stylish and hilariously witty gay men -- authoritative experts in food and wine, grooming, decorating, fashion, and culture -- invade your life, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and, in the course of a day, make you better dressed, better groomed, better mannered, and a better cook, living in a better home. All of this is painless (unless you have a really egregious body-hair situation), liberating, and downright fun.
This is what Queer Eye for the Straight Guy does each week on one of the hottest TV shows in memory, as the Fab 5 -- Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia, Carson Kressley, and Jai Rodriguez -- turn an everyman frog into an every-girl's-dream prince. And this is what the book offers: the essential "make better" advice from each of the Fab 5. Just like the show, the book focuses on easy but lasting lifestyle transformation -- the tasks, the projects, the modest purchases, and, most important, the new attitudes that immediately make a noticeable difference.
From Kyan's instructions on how often to wash your hair to Carson's explanation of why shirts are the new ties, from Ted's strategies for ordering wine and Thom's suggestions on a better bathroom to Jai's hints on shaking hands,
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is filled with clear, direct advice on the issues that confront every man. But
Queer Eye doesn't try to make you dress like Carson or dance like Jai; it's about teaching you how to refine your own personal style, without throwing away your entire closet and buying a whole new everything. It's about helping you realize the best expression of yourself -- the real you.
Queer Eye introduces men to the rewards that women -- and a lot of gay men -- have long reaped by thinking about the day-to-day details that make them look better, feel better, and get more out of life. Many straight men have long felt that these subjects are not for them. Nothing could be sillier. In this book, the Fab 5 sets them straight (so to speak).
Customer Reviews:
Quite useful for the straight (or gay) man.......2006-01-01
Now first off, I have to get something off my chest. I am not a homophobe - I had a homosexual roommate sophomore year of college and we got along fine - but I get tired of people (most commonly women) who either drool at anything or anyone homosexual or having this belief that homosexuals are inherently good at anything involving home decor or style. I hate to break it to you, but homosexuals are like you and me, and not all are like the Fab Five. Remember my homosexual roommate? His side of the room was the messiest I have ever seen a human being make. The Fab Five would have had collective heart attacks upon seeing the state of it. By the logic of the homofangirls, I was the homosexual. Not to mention that half the things said in this book I have also read in "straight" men's magazines including "Men's Health" or the alternate "Men's Fitness." I'm sorry folks, but there's no Cult of Gays out there in brown robes meeting in caves and passing down tablets written by God that tell you what brand of shaving cream to use. The reason the Fab Five are so good at what they do is because they have had the training or education and DO know what they are talking about. For example, Thom Filicia founded an interior design company, and Kyan Douglas has had experience in professional and commercial salons.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let me talk about the book itself. Like the show, it offers some great insight into better living and hygiene. A lot of it is just resourceful, showing you different types of styles or ideas to open up what you might be comfortable with. There's also some pretty decent advice here, from what grooming products to use and not use, how to treat your hosts at a party, (and more importantly, what to bring as a gift) some all-important social tips, (and boy do I know a few people who need some of those) right down to what to think about arranging your furniture and eating out. It's entertaining and well written, making it at easy read that's good if you want something to just sit down with and glance through for a few minutes or so.
Well worth the money. I wish I could have given it to my sophomore roommate, maybe then I could have gotten from my bed to the door.
Excellent.......2005-09-27
Fun format, visually appealing (of course!), useful information in all subjects, even some really delicious, simple-to-cook but impressive-to-serve recipes, and take it from a girl: what these guys say about what appeals to women (or turns us off) is absolutely true. Best of all, it's never about changing who or what the reader is, but about bringing out the best that's already in him.
Plenty of useful advise here!.......2004-11-30
Heard the taped version of QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY by Ted Allen et al. . . . I must admit to not being a big favorite of the TV show (of the same name); however, that said,
this was an engaging program with lots of useful advice about food and wine, grooming, decorating, fashion, and culture.
For example, I liked the suggestion to have two bottle openers in case one disappears at a party--as it usually does.
Also, I took note of such other ideas as:
* On how to button jackets, remember: sometimes, always, never. If a three button jacket, that's how to button it; if a two button jacket, skip the first word (sometimes).
* Jeans should fit you as you leave the store. Don't buy them too short or long, as they are now most often preshrunk.
* Give more compliments. They strengthen relationships and show you care.
* At a party, hire somebody to help.
* If you get a cellphone call, say, "Hi, I'm with someone. Can I call you back later?"
* Don't take a call while dining!
* Read COSMOPOLITAN to learn about relationships.
Family of Fab Five Fans.......2004-10-01
Having become a Fab Five Family Fan Club, we had to have this book. I'm a wife and mother living in an otherwise male household. These fantastic guys offer advice for the betterment of all of us..from the inside-out. The truly wonderful thing about this book, and about these men, is that they are just that, men..who happen to 'get it.' They aren't afraid to pass along hints which simply elude many people. They gently encourage us to make the attempts to broaden and enrich our lives. This isn't just about men, either. Face it, girls, we don't understand men any better than they understand us. This book has cleared up many a confusion for me. In fact, I've learned a little more about all five areas these charming men discuss. This book is on our family reference shelf, and has served us all well. Thanks, Fab Five, for putting into the simplest terms, and with the most well-placed humor, all the little things we need to know to raise the bar. Hats off to the boys! Cheers!
Turning yourself up two notches.......2004-07-24
I bought this book having seen only 20 minutes of one episode -- you don't need to be a fan of the TV show. It helped that I have a few gay male friends who have taste, so it was not a tremendous step to take advice from five gay men. The easiset chapters to put into practice are on grooming, clothes, and culture. Who knew that plucking eyebrows (gently) and caring for one's face twice a day would have people notice? The chapter on clothes is helping to get me out of a predictable clothing rut, and the chapter on culture has some really action-provoking suggestions on going out, even if it's just you by yourself. The point of the book is to gently nudge you into a different direction. The first step is being open to new things. You'll find your confidence increasing and that you secretly covet other men's clothing and hair styles. Check out the music CD, also -- you can dance around while you get ready to go out.

Book Description
In this searing polemic, Lee Edelman outlines a radically uncompromising new ethics of queer theory. His main target is the all-pervasive figure of the child, which he reads as the linchpin of our universal politics of “reproductive futurism.” Edelman argues that the child, understood as innocence in need of protection, represents the possibility of the future against which the queer is positioned as the embodiment of a relentlessly narcissistic, antisocial, and future-negating drive. He boldly insists that the efficacy of queerness lies in its very willingness to embrace this refusal of the social and political order. In No Future, Edelman urges queers to abandon the stance of accommodation and accede to their status as figures for the force of a negativity that he links with irony, jouissance, and, ultimately, the death drive itself.
Closely engaging with literary texts, Edelman makes a compelling case for imagining Scrooge without Tiny Tim and Silas Marner without little Eppie. Looking to Alfred Hitchcock’s films, he embraces two of the director’s most notorious creations: the sadistic Leonard of North by Northwest, who steps on the hand that holds the couple precariously above the abyss, and the terrifying title figures of The Birds, with their predilection for children. Edelman enlarges the reach of contemporary psychoanalytic theory as he brings it to bear not only on works of literature and film but also on such current political flashpoints as gay marriage and gay parenting. Throwing down the theoretical gauntlet, No Future reimagines queerness with a passion certain to spark an equally impassioned debate among its readers.
Customer Reviews:
Important, but..........2006-03-21
Lee Edleman's book poses important questions for all of us about "queerness" and resistance to our presumedly "normal" cultural investments in a redemptive future figured most vividly in the notion of the "child." I admire the work being done here, and in particular the intellectual chutzpah it takes to dismantle this dominant ideological framework while taking on Baudrillard, Butler and other formidable thinkers. It is, however, unfortunate that Edelman seems to have become enchanted as much by his own linguistic cleverness as by the important ideas he sets out to explore.
Thelabor required to make sense of the dense, overwrought and smugly elitist tone of the text detracts from and, I imagine for many readers unfamiliar with the burdensome jargon, simply impedes understanding. This is particularly painful in the chapter on Hitchcock's "The Birds" which seems to be as much a compendium of bad bird puns as it is a serious inquiry into the themes of the book.
That being said, Edelman has made an important, even daring, contribution to queer theory. His readings of texts and films are original and thought-provoking. Furthermore, the ideas Edelman lays out in "No Future" could and should help shape our understanding of the importance of resisting what he calls a "vision of futurity." Sadly, his impenetrable prose limits access to his ideas and keeps the circuit of discourse firmly shut to those most likely to benefit from the ideas he puts forth.

Great book!!.......2007-04-12
If you love the series, then this is the book for you!!!
The photos are really good and you get to understand better the characters and the situations of the first three seasons.
The only thing that's missing is more photos of Brian....
GREAT READ.......2006-08-05
IF YOU LOVED TEH SHOW AS MUCH AS I DID THIS BOOK WILLL OFFER YOU MUCH INSIGHT INTO THE CHARACTERS AND MOTIVATION BEHIND THE CAMERA.
A must for lovers of the show........2006-07-18
It's all about the pictures! Lots of them and fantastic quality. This is primarily a picture book, and you might want to buy a second copy, so only one gets stained with drool.
The written content is good, but nothing new here, in fact any good fan knows all of this and more. However, there are some great character insights with perspectives from the actors, producers & writers, as well as episode synopses.
The one disappointment is that this book covers seasons 1-3 only. But die hards like me would rush out for volume II should it ever come.
QAF - The Book.......2006-07-14
Interesting for the back-stories on episodes. Great pictures, fun to read and browse through, especially after re-watching a season or an episode.

Book Description
"This book is a succinct, pedagogically designed introduction. As classroom text, Sullivan's work is heady with vibrant debate and slim heuristics; her intellectual clarity is stunning."
Choice
A Critical Introduction to Queer Theory explores the ways in which sexuality, subjectivity and sociality have been discursively produced in various historical and cultural contexts.
The book begins by putting gay and lesbian sexuality and politics in historical context and demonstrates how and why queer theory emerged in the West in the late twentieth century. Sullivan goes on to provide a detailed overview of the complex ways in which queer theory has been employed, covering a diversity of key topics including: race, sadomasochism, straight sex, fetishism, community, popular culture, transgender, and performativity. Each chapter focuses on a distinct issue or topic, provides a critical analysis of the specific ways in which it has been responded to by critics (including Freud, Foucault, Derrida, Judith Butler, Jean-Luc Nancy, Adrienne Rich and Laura Mulvey), introduces key terms, and uses contemporary cinematic texts as examples.

Book Description
Queer Studies: An Interdisciplinary Reader is a collection of essays that over the past decade have helped to establish sexuality as one of the most vital and important areas of study in both the humanities and social sciences. Accessible as well as broadly interdisciplinary, the volume functions as a primary text for introductory as well as advanced courses in gender and sexuality studies, as a general introduction to the field, and as a scholarly resource.Queer Studies covers the full range of issues, problems, and controversies in this still emerging field, including sexual politics, cultural constructions of sexuality, transnationalism, race and class, community, sexual citizenship, and the nation-state. An introductory essay written by the editors provides a comprehensive map to this new field, as well as a context for pivotal scholarship that promotes dialogue across the humanities and the social sciences and the interdisciplinary fields of queer studies and women's studies.

A terrific resource........2003-02-08
I will admit that my review is a tad biased by the fact that Dr. Corber and Dr. Valocchi are my academic advisors; that being said, the strength of this book does not rely on their strengths, but rather the cross-disciplinary collection of work that they have brought together in _Queer Studies: An Interdisciplinary Reader_.
Corber and Valocchi's introduction gives a broad overview of the Queer Theory field. This overview is followed by a review of the criticism from more "established" schools of thought (i.e., feminism and the social sciences). This collection does not seek to rectify the critiques of those fields with Queer Theory; it simply draws attention to the current critiques. Corber and Valocchi offer these criticisms a basis for critical examination of their texts that the reader-- even a Queer Theory novice-- can then apply to the texts held within _Queer Studies_.
This collection is clearly designed to give classrooms a single text to work from when teaching queer studies. While a more advanced understanding of Queer Theory would require reading some of its founding works (e.g., Michel Foucault's _History of Sexuality Volume 1_, Judith P. Butler's _Gender Trouble_, Michael Warner's _The Trouble With Normal_, and etc.) this collection is helpful for the new student of queer theory.
_Queer Studies_ manages to be queer from cover to cover and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a broad overview of the field of Queer Theory.

It is a priority addition for all libraries serving scholars and students with an interest in GLBTQ culture, history and politics across the disciplines.

Book Description
In The Empire of Love anthropologist Elizabeth A. Povinelli reflects on a set of ethical and normative claims about the governance of love, sociality, and the body that circulates in liberal settler colonies such as the United States and Australia. She boldly theorizes intimate relations as pivotal sites where liberal logics and aspirations absorbed through settler imperialism are manifest, where discourses of self-sovereignty, social constraint, and value converge.
For more than twenty years, Povinelli has traveled to the social worlds of indigenous men and women living at Belyuen, a small community in the Northern Territory of Australia. More recently she has moved across communities of alternative progressive queer movements in the United States, particularly those who identify as radical faeries. In this book she traces how liberal binary concepts of individual freedom and social constraint influence understandings of intimacy in these two worlds. At the same time, she describes alternative models of social relations within each group in order to highlight modes of intimacy that transcend a reductive choice between freedom and constraint.
Shifting focus away from identities toward the social matrices out of which identities and divisions emerge, Povinelli offers a framework for thinking through such issues as what counts as sexuality and which forms of intimate social relations result in the distribution of rights, recognition, and resources, and which do not. In The Empire of Love Povinelli calls for, and begins to formulate, a politics of “thick life,” a way of representing social life nuanced enough to meet the density and variation of actual social worlds.

The Trouble with Normal: Sex, Politics, and the Ethics of Queer Life
ASIN: 0415910153 |
Book Description
Queer by Choice enters the controversial debate of sexual identity by examining choice in gay men and lesbian sexual identity. Drawing on interviews with a sample of 72 people, Whisman analyzes if, and to what extent, choice played a role in determining identity. Contributing factors such as race, class, religion, and educational level are considered. The results of the study are stimulating and often surprising, and contribute to the escalating debates over sexual identity as lesbians and gays continue to soldier for rights and representation.
Customer Reviews:
Thought-provoking but not terrific.......1998-03-12
Whisman does a credible job in presenting the results of her dissertation and she doesn't claim more than is reasonable based on the somewhat limited size of her sample (about 35 gay men and about 35 lesbians). The interview excerpts are interesting, and they got me thinking about how or why women or men choose to be gay. My book group (about 10 lesbians) didn't like the book as much as I did, but I know what it means to write a dissertation and how limited the scope of it usually is (Whisman's research was not funded by a large institution). We would have been more interested in a psychological rather than a political analysis of the data on choice. This is not to discount the importance of the notion of choice from a political perspective . . . but most of us are experienced enough to know that we have to negotiate our way between heterosexual feminists and male homosexuals. On the other hand, the book did stimulate a good discussion of the issues that Whisman raises.
