Woody Allen's greatness as a director rests squarely on his stupendous talent as a writer. In the glory years from 1977 to 1980 he released his best--and best written--movies. Included in this volume are the scripts of Annie Hall, Allen's first mature film and the winner of the Best Picture Oscar; Interiors, his first serious work, a Bergmanesque treatment of a tortured family; Manhattan, his greatest and most characteristic movie, which concerns a writer's attempt to find true love in the comic wilderness of New York City; and Stardust Memories, his most satiric and personal piece, about the effects of fame on a film director who is standing at a crossroads in his life.

Book Description

This book contains the script to four of Woody Allen's movies: Annie Hall, Interiors, Manhattan and Stardust Memories.

4 out of 5 stars Do It For The Eggs.......2001-05-27

I bought this while studying screenwriting, assuming that owning ANNIE HALL and MANHATTAN would somehow deliver upon me some kind of ability, perhaps a bit of greatness via osmoseous (sp?).

I was wrong.

I also realized that MANHATTAN is based more on the visual than I had realized--the script, while great, isn't on the same level as ANNIE HALL; INTERIORS, which dissapointed me on the screen is a very good script; and--this just confirmed what I already knew--ANNIE HALL is a great great GREAT film.

Did I mention that ANNIE HALL is a great film?

2 out of 5 stars Truly pointless.......2000-04-20

If you're a cineaste, it can be quite enlightening and entertaining to read the original shooting script that a favorite film was based on. In addition to the screenwriter's comments and directions, you usually get several scenes that were cut from the finished movie as well as occasional odd little changes in dialogue sprinkled throughout and an overall peek at some aspects of the creative process that a film goes through from inception to completion. Unfortunately, that's not the case with this book, since the four "screenplays" included are merely transcriptions from the finished films. VCRs were generally available when this book was first published in '82, so even back then this book was a pointless rip-off. Watch the films, skip the book.

4 out of 5 stars Must have omnibus for Woody Allen fans and script writers........1999-05-23

This book contains "screenplays" of Woody Allen's most famous films including Manhattan and Annie Hall. It doesn't say screenplays on the cover, but that's what I figured it would be. Instead, what I got was a book that's not even script formatted. The publisher also adds his notes whenever he pleases to explain what's going on 'from the film' to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......1998-09-18

This great book includes the screenplays of two of Woody's best films, "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan." There's also "Stardust Memories" which is good, and "Interiors" which is, well...ok. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great read - Explores the human condition with insight........1998-04-24

This book cheered me along during a stay in hospital and so I will always remember it fondly.
To me, the scripts represent the best of Woody Allen as they are truthful and realistic. Humour is
sharp in the scripts (except for Interiors of course) as it exposes pretenses, hypocrisies & other human fallibilities. There is so much more
to this than clever lines. This should be a text for
aspiring scriptwriters. To any publishers reading
this, how about another compilation which has
"Husbands & Wives" and "Mighty Aphrodite" in it?!

Book Description

Amidst the decaying splendor of Tottering Hall in the county of Pimmshire, Lord and Lady Tottering live the archetypal country life. Daffy Tottering drinks gin, diets permanently, and frets about her descending bosom, while her husband Dicky lives for hunting, shooting, and fishing. Together with their slightly politically incorrect political entourage, Daffy and Dicky represent a sort of quintessentially English country lifestyle. Thus it is no wonder that these endearing characters have become stars of Country Life magazine, and their creator, award-winning cartoonist Annie Tempest is feted as one of Britain’s most accomplished illustrators. Tottering Hall is Annie Tempest’s personal selection from 7 years of strips and single cartoons.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2006-11-18

Fans of British humour will delight in this book of cartoons about Lord and Lady ("Daffy and Dicky") Tottering and their life at Tottering Hall in North Pimmshire (anyone else feel like a little drinky?). The type of humour is similar to that in the New Yorker cartoons - most of the 'toons elicit wry smiles of recognition, although the occasional guffaw is to be expected. While we are given a glimpse into the rarified world of life on an English country estate (shooting parties, hunting parties, butlers, grand rooms full of art and antiques), Ms. Tempest makes it clear that, in some respects at least, the rich are not so different than you and I. To wit: Daffy struggles with her weight continuously (and loves chocolate and alcohol); the romance has cooled somewhat after 40 years; TV and fast food are a regular part of life; Daffy struugles with the computer; the grandchildren can be trying, etc.

Annie Tempest's drawing style is crisp and incredibly detailed, and she makes good use of colour. Further, dog lovers will be charmed by the ubiquitous canine presence. Expect to read this book straight through and find yourself insisting that others read it as well. I personally will be champing at the bit waiting for the rest of Ms. Tempest's books to become available here in the states.

    5 out of 5 stars Good storyline.......2007-09-09

I was looking for books about Annie Palmer because I was interested in a white witch in Jamaica. Sounded very mysterious. This book is a good representation of what was going on... but more in just story form. I was wanting more of the background behind her specifically and more of a horror story I guess. But, I gave this book 5 stars because it is wonderfully written for how the author wanted it to be written. Great book.

      Book Description

Increased and accelerated processes of cultural syncretism have produced new configurations of identity for which theories of hybridity, matissage, and cosmopolitanism have been deployed and reworked in order to capture the polycentric and polysemic aspects of a new political philosophy of the Other. Under pressure from localized resistances, these terms no longer provide adequate frameworks for articulating the critical issues of difference and the asymmetry of evolving contemporary cultures. Beginning as a full-fledged literary movement in the late 1980s in the French Caribbean, Craolita ventured into the "chaos" produced by history to reclaim nationalist Creole identities. As a hypothesis of cultural production, the subsequent process of creolization reaches far beyond the plantation cultures of the Caribbean, towards a conceptualization of a non-totalitarian consciousness of preserved diversity that has its contested terrain within language, identity, politics, religion, and culture. Transcending still entrenched postcolonial and imperialist narratives of domination and resistance, center and periphery, creolization as a theory of creative disorder analyses active urban contest and contact zones in flux. It expresses a need for particularization that, by embedding Creole dynamics into sociopolitical and sociolinguistic histories, reformulates territories of art, architecture, dance, film, music, poetry, cuisine, oral literature, magic, and carnival.

What an experience reading about these two delightful sisters who were winners in every area of life...Back when Black people weren't accepted by most white people the one sister became a dentist of all things...Here she was Negro, a woman on top of it and going against all odds she didn't let that stop her! During the depression years they made candy and sold it at dept. stores. and survived without any kind of welfare. Never had a phone in their house. "if people wanted to talk with us they could come see us" was their motto..

The time they moved the refrigerator downstairs from an upper floor because the man they had hired kept putting them off day after day....and they were near 100 yrs old! Forget the exact age but they never let anything stop them if they needed to do it.

They did their yoga exercises and shows pictures of them. Also some simple recipes they used over the years. They never bought detergent or dishwashing liquid...made their own and the recipe is included. They even include a recipe for Rose Wine and their hot yeast rolls. The candy recipe is included also.

This book is my all-time favorite and I have ended up buying it 3 times since I am in the health care business and work with seniors and try to encourage and give them the joy and hope of this wonderful book.

Annie and her best friend Jane just graduated from college and leaving to open their own coffee and art business. The day before they leave there's a bank robbery and the money ended up in Annie's car unknown to everyone. Except Annie... Should she keep it or give it back.. Soon without the help of the money Annie makes a success of her business and becomes a millionaire in her own right. But her deep dark secret burdens her everyday life. There's an insurance investigator that is convinced Annie is guilty and dogs her for many years. Read this book to find out what she does. 2 out of 5 stars Not the best..........2000-05-10

This was my first Fern Michaels book after hearing people rave about her, and I don't know if this was just a bad one or if all of hers are like this, but ANNIE'S RAINBOW wasn't that great. Fern tries to make Annie an interesting character, but I really didn't care what happened to her. Fern's writing is also a little offbeat. ANNIE'S RAINBOW did have a unique storyline. Don't go spend money on this one; borrow from a friend.

2 out of 5 stars iceD tea, thank you.......2000-04-22

This book was a great first draft. As with all first drafts, it needed some polishing, and some filling in. The author had a great plot, but, not enough details. I wanted to know how she struggled and what all she went through to succeed in her business, instead we read that she opens her business on a shoestring and boom, she's rich and owns stores everywhere. The "urst" element was there, (unrequited lust), but was taken a little bit too far and began to get a bit tedious. I would have given this book three stars except that for several chapters the author kept mentioning "ice tea", over and over. Now one grammatical error is understandable, but to keep saying it over and over again really gets on one's nerves and takes away from the story. Why not serve lemonade or bourbon, at least she could spell it.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2000-02-01

This book is really good. It's about greed, trust, fortune, hope, and deception. Annie's rainbow is just money, and as she finds, money can't fix everything. I don't want to spoil any plotlines, but this book kept me captivated. I would recommend it for sure!

        4 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......1999-08-23

On graduation day for Anna and Jane, the bank was robbed, the crooks caught, and Anna found the missing stolen money hidden in her car. Instead of immediately returning it, she tells no one and uses it to begin her new business and care for her ailing mother. Once financially secure, she planned to return the money, anonymously, with interest. The insurance investigator is hot on her trail, but has no proof. In fact, he thinks Jane found the money and Anna is covering for her!

Ten years later, business has gone as she dreamed. However, the thief is now out of prison and hunting Anna.

*** Fern Michaels shows that there is no such thing as easy money! A wonderful story filled with some of life's tough decisions, hope, dreams, and romance. Spectacular! ***
