Book Description

Model, film star, socialite, friend, lover, addict, Edie Sedgwick was the first "it" girl of the Andy Warhol Factory scene and later muse to Bob Dylan. The arc of Edie's life traced the rise and fall of the 1960s from idyllic experimentation to dissolute recklessness. After being toasted by the whole of New York City, Edie died alone of a drug overdose in California at the age of 28. David Weisman (with John Palmer) filmed Edie for the last five years of her life in his cult film Ciao! Manhattan. When he recently uncovered lost footage of Edie, David was inspired to create Edie: Girl on Fire, a book and a documentary film that explores Edie's true story. He and coauthor Melissa Painter have tracked down and interviewed many of Edie Sedgwick's surviving intimates, including Danny Fields, Baby Jane Holzer, and Ultra Violet. They also unearthed hundreds of never-before-published photos portraits, professional ad shoots, and heartbreaking snapshots of the girl who won New York's heart and nearly burned down the Chelsea hotel. The book also features a CD with Edie's last interview ever, a riveting account of a rollercoaster life. Sure to be seen as a rebuttal to Hollywood's highly fictionalized film Factory Girl (coming this fall), Edie: Girl on Fire creates an insightful and startling portrait of a woman that nobody quite knew.

5 out of 5 stars Superstar Edie!.......2007-05-13

I adored it...full of photo's I'd never seen before of Edie...new quotes, etc. Really gave me insight into her whole vibe & electricity. major fun! and it comes with a great CD with an interview.

5 out of 5 stars The Girl Is On Fire.......2007-04-23

Edie: Girl On Fire is chalked full of rare pictures and new commentary from the people who knew Edie the best, her husband, friends & family. The co-author of the book, David Weisman, not only shares never-before-seen pictures of Edie but, also marvels at the Edie obsession some 36 years after her death. Weisman & Painter do an excellent job of portraying the real Edie through pictures & stories shared by Edie's family & friends. They don't romanticize Edie as being an victim. In fact, they show that Edie was just like the rest of us. A flawed human being who was trying to find a place in the world during a turbulent time period. Edie's flaws are not glossed over or explained away. Instead, they show what a disturbed and lost young woman she was. Weisman himself knew Edie personally for years. Weisman saw Edie at her zenith and watched her fall apart and ultimately lose her life because of her own addictions & obsessions.

One of the best parts of the book is the pictures. After years of seeing the same Edie pictures over & over, there are finally pages & pages of glorious "new" pictures including scrapped "Life" magazine photoshoots and newspapers covering one of the many fires that Edie started at various hotels due to her speed usage. Another awesome part is the cd of audio interviews Edie conducted towards the end of her life for what would be her last movie "Ciao! Manhattan!" (made by co-author Weisman). Edie talks about her many drug trips and her time at the Factory. She's candid, well spoken and heartbreaking. When listening to this cd of Edie's voice and looking at the pictures, you almost want the ending to change. You want Edie to pull through all this garbage and rise from the ashes like a phoenix. Just like any story, the ending never changes and there's really no happily ever after.

4 out of 5 stars Edie: Girl on Fire Review.......2007-03-25

The book is filled with many great photos of Edie. Many I've never seen before. The text if fine, mostly quotes from many different people. I think I would have given this book a 5 if it contained more of a narrative type of text vs. many quotes.

5 out of 5 stars Edie: Girl on Fire.......2007-03-21

This book is excellent. The pictures really tell the story of
Edie Sedgwick, '60's Warhol groupie, actress, model who lived a "roller coaster" life. Comments by those who knew her make the tale of her life
interesting & real.

5 out of 5 stars Edie:Girl on Fire!.......2007-03-18

Hot coffee table book with lots of rare Edie interviews & photos! A must for all Edie fans & a great companion to the Ciao Manhattan DVD! Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable and Haunting.......2007-08-24

When the movie "Factory Girl" (god-awful by the way) came out, it renewed my interest in this book and Edie Sedgwick. My interest in her dates back to when I first bought this book, way back in 1982. The test of a great book is that is grows richer and deeper upon re-reading. And this one does.

I first, this was simply the story of a notorious party girl. Upon re-reading (I've read this countless times), "Edie" becomes the story of how the thread of mental illness traveled through generations. This book is truly unforgettable and haunting. And I'm sure, while suffering a bout of boredom, I'll read it again. - Siouxie
P.S. Someone should give this book to Britany Spears. She's traveling the same path and she's 25; Edie was dead at 28.

5 out of 5 stars BIography.......2007-04-10

Book came very quickily (within 2 days) in excellent condition. I would buy from this resource again.

5 out of 5 stars and i thought my family had issues.... .......2007-02-09

yikes. what a tragic tale. incredible book. incredibly sad.

5 out of 5 stars Probably The Best Book on Edie.......2006-12-08

This is THE Edie book to buy if your only going to buy one. It is an honest biographical look at her with many insights into her life from family and friends. A large portion of the beginning of the book is devoted to the Sedgwick family and their history and I feel if you really want to understand Edie you have to know about her family and their past. A great book overall, very well rounded with some great photos included as well.

5 out of 5 stars probably my favorite non-fiction book.......2006-10-25

I have given this book as a gift to at least 5 people. No other book about the factory, American class structures, addiction, or celebrity comes close to "Edie" (originally titled "Edie: An American Biography"- don't know why they changed it for the paperback). Legs Mc Neill's oral history of punk rock "Please Kill Me" (another favorite) was obviously quite influenced by this book. Both the subject and structure of "Edie" are fascinating. If you like films like the Maysles brothers' "Grey Gardens", or have any interest in counter-culture history, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Book Description

Part tell–all, part cautionary tale, this emotionally charged memoir from a former video vixen nicknamed 'Superhead' goes beyond the glamour of celebrity to reveal the inner workings of the hip–hop dancer industry – from the physical and emotional abuse that's rampant in the industry, and which marked her own life – to the excessive use of drugs, sex and bling.

Once the sought–after video girl, this sexy siren has helped multi–platinum artists, such as Jay–Z, R. Kelly and LL Cool J, sell millions of albums with her sensual dancing. In a word, Karrine was H–O–T. So hot that she made as much as $2500 a day in videos and was selected by well–known film director F. Gary Gray to co–star in his film, A Man Apart, starring Vin Diesel. But the film and music video sets, swanky Hollywood and New York restaurants and trysts with the celebrities featured in the pages of People and In Touch magazines only touches the surface of Karrine Steffans' life.

Her journey is filled with physical abuse, rape, drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness and single motherhood – all by the age of 26. By sharing her story, Steffans hopes to shed light on an otherwise romanticised industry and help young women avoid the same pitfalls she encountered. If they're already in danger, she hopes to inspire them to find a way to dig themselves out of what she knows first–hand

to be a cycle of hopelessness and despair.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay, but confusing at the same time .......2007-10-04

I know this book has been on the shelfs for a while. There is actually a second book that follows this one. I felt i had to read this book before I read Karrine's second book. The book is okay but it is all over the place. First her whole childhood story wasn't really convincing to me. I felt that she fabricated a lot of the stuff that she talks about her mother. The rape incident seem so unrealistic to me. I don't believe that whole part about other people watching her getting rape and not doing anything about it. Also i couldn't believe she remained friends with that girl after what happen. She constantly claims how she had low sef-esteem and how she always looked for love in the wrong places. One thing that stood with me was after sleeping with all these celebrities she would say, how she felt love and worth it once again.

Superhead whatever her name is, she was just too confusing for me. I can't believe that she put her child through so much and abandoned him numerous times in order to go with these rappers who didn't care about her. I think she put her self in those situations, i didn't feel sorry for her. i felt sorry for her son and i have to say Ray J. She lied to him and used him as her safety net. Overall the book is a quick read.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Will Go Down In History.......2007-09-29

I am just getting the chance to write this review but I read it shortly after it was released. Karrine took us back to her childhood and helped us to understand the complex woman now called "Superhead." As in other reviews, I have never judged her.No one should. Who we may be quick to judge though are those people in the book who shield their past and demons. It was very interesting to divulge in the lives of many powerful (not only hip hop) figures. I did feel in reading the book that there is so much that she left out--no wonder no one has sued her. Many of them are sighing relief. Well besides "Big Tigger" which makes me wonder why HE'S so upset. If its "not true" Tigger--just move on...u guilty of something? Just wondering. Who also makes me cringe and want to judge is "Papa" otherwise known as Method Man. I'm sorry if I am spoiling it for those who haven't read Vixen Diaries yet but the fact that he called up to Hot 97 in a rage about how he doesn't know her only for us to find out it was him the whole time. It plays in my head "Why do I keep getting mentioned in the same sentence with this girl and I don't know her?" I have no respect for him whatsoever and being outed is what he deserved. Now you have a LOT of explaining to do Meth!! I imagine that he will not be making any appearances or doing anything in the near future in the sheer effort to avoid the "Superhead" question. Anywhoo--everybody should have a copy of this in your library. Just think 10 years from now your 16 year old son or daughter who is looking at these aged hip hop artists and even Karrine, can read and see who they really are--just normal people trying to figure things out in the world.

4 out of 5 stars alright further proof that sex sells.......2007-09-14

karrine's my kind of girl she's into everything threesomes, prostituition, drugs you name uit she did it ain't nothing I can say that have'nt already beed said on here but there are some names I was hoping she drop like snoop, ice cube, nelly, master p, mack 10, ugk, too short, luke, maybe she did'nt have time for those good book lobve how she go into detailsd about dmx scratching her and barking while havinbg sex.

3 out of 5 stars No doubt about it: She CONFESSED........2007-09-09

Poorly written novels irritate me greatly. Based on the life Karrine lived and the way she reacted to certain situations informs the reader that she isn't the most intelligent woman alive, but she did have Karen Hunter aid her with this book, so between the two of them, someone should have known how to write a decent book. However, in this instance, the poor vernacular isn't the most imperative issue here. What truly matters here is the fact that she was so unapologetically honest about many of today's hottest male celebrities. She was sexually involved with superstars such as Ray-J, Kool G Rap, Ja Rule, DMX, Jay Z, Shaquille O'Neal, Ice-T and Diddy. She was seemingly honest about her liaisons with these men, many of whom are married.

Karrine was able to get doors opened for her because of her good looks and amazing sexual expertise. In this book, she makes it clear that she has no love for her mother because her mother was not there for her. This may or may not serve as a contributing factor to why Karrine was so free with her body. She began her "career" as a dancer in hip-hop music videos. This opened doors for her; she was able to get into concerts and VIP at clubs. In the book, Karrine doesn't necessarily glorify the finer things in life, but one can easily imply that she enjoys them a great deal. She is very candid about her abusive relationship with rapper Kool G Rap and the fact that she was homeless. Before the book ends, she becomes a bit preachy and lets girls know that they should want more for themselves than to be a man's whore.

I truly enjoyed reading the book. It was difficult to put down once I became engrossed into it. If you can look past the poor writing, this book should be at least a little enjoying and/or intriguing.

4 out of 5 stars JUICY !!!.......2007-09-09

Its not great literature, but its spicy and lurid. And I couldn't put it down! If you want a quick & easy read, than you will like Confessions of a Video Vixen.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! The Vivid Girls Are Hotter Than The Bronte Sisters!!!.......2005-11-16

I couldn't BELIEVE how much I learned from this book-- the Vivid Girls are amazingly HOT! Jenna, Tawny, Kira, Briana, Dasha, Mercedez, Sunrise (especilly SUNRISE!!), and Savanna can out-write and out-**** Emily, Anne, and Charlotte Bronte any day of the week! And Jane Austen-- forget it! (If she'd had this book before she met Harris Bigg-Wither, the marriage never would have been called off!!) Throw away that copy of Northanger Abbey and get down to the nitty-gritty with Briana: she'll tell you how to make love in your refrigerator! I'll never look at the vegetable-crisping drawer the same way again! And Dasha's relaxation techniques will allow even the most inhibited of partners to receive BEYOND-THE-ELBOW satisfaction-- wow!! Just WOW!!!

1 out of 5 stars this is just a very average how-to sex manual.......2005-07-17

you see one and you see them all. i am sure that there are some that are better than others, but this is not one of the better ones. your significant other won't miss out on any sexual pleasure, if you don't read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Vividly the star is Porn!.......2004-12-14

So maybe you're a fan of Vivid Entertainment and especially the Vivid Girls (Jenna, Tawny, Kira, Briana, Dasha, Mercedez, Sunrise, and Savanna)! If so this book is for you.

Truly, I knew very little about Vivid Entertainment when I bought this book. I suppose I was intrigued as to what a "Porn Star" can really tell me about improving my sex life. Sure they have sex everyday on film but really what kind of information can they offer that will help me or others have a truly fulfilled sex life? Actually, they do manage to communicate the concept of fantasy via porn as a sexual aid and enhancement to any individuals or couples sex life.

Although, there are gems of first hand experience and information I felt as if this book is mostly a vehicle to market and publicized Vivids' number one product, "Porn". Oh, and the Vivid Girls of course.

First and foremost the book is hansom and has a center section of glossy pics of the Vivid Girls. Also, let me just mention that the book is well written with the help of Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman. Each section does give you some interesting information along with a section of script/intro of a currently available Porn Film. Then lots of personal experiences and preferences from the Vivid Girls concerning sex.

Oh, yes, let me also mention the book is littered or adorned with small sections called, 'Vivid Girl Favorits' and 'Vivid Girl Tips' that were quite interesting and worth reading.

All in all, I gave the book four stars for its forward approach of sex and film, its organization, and overall presentation. You might not learn a great deal on how to improve your own sex life but then you might. Anyway, you'll certainly get a lot of forthright personal experiences that can be considered crude erotica or you can consider the delivery of personal information as your own personal one on one interview with the Vivid Girls of Entertainment.

I thought the book intimate and well done but I won't be running to the adult video store anytime soon.

I used to watch "The Golden Girls" along with several other sitcoms. I really hadn't watched it in a while, but after reading this book, I am an energized fan! I loved all the trivia, backgrounds and insights on the characters, writing and the development of the show itself. This is a fun book to pick up and re-read. It is extremely well-written and layed out with lots of interesting sections and surprises. I highly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars A salute to stay-with-it-ness.......2006-01-18

Drew Barrymore is to be congratulated. Her honesty is painfully refreshing and hasn't been seen lately since the new Star Jones book ... or possibly the Burt Reynolds biography.

She's seen the depths and the heights and knows the difference. She's drank the champagne (even though she was 8 at the time) and sipped the sewer water and prefers the former. She's been on the carpet and also received carpet burns on her knees when she was short rent.

Thank you Drew for being an inspiration to all the preteens with drinking problems ... they don't have to suffer in silence anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Drew Barrymore is an inspiration. Period........2005-07-10

Literally one of the greatest books I've ever read. No, I'm not saying that because I'm a Drew Barrymore fan. I mean, if acting isn't what she wanted to do, she could've been an author! Written when she was still in rehab circa late 1988 and published in 1990, this book gives all of us an insight into her early years, and the hell she went through at such a young age. She tells us about her first taste of alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, and marijuana. She also tells us about her first kiss, and her first makeout session, and how she was always fighting with her mother. She tells us about living at the rehab. She tells us about her visits with her father as well. She shares all of her stories and adventures, her mishaps and her first achievements. With this book, I've learned how truly strong this woman is, and how no matter what she went through, she didn't ever back down at achieving what she wanted. Drew Barrymore is a true idol for anyone, and this book proves that.

5 out of 5 stars Fasanating.......2005-05-18

I read this book 5 times in High School. (1992-1996)
I LOOOOOOOVED it!!!

5 out of 5 stars entertaining book about glamour, drugs, and lies.......2005-04-08

I was pleasantly surprised after I finished reading this book! It's very entertaining from start to finish, and as you read more and more about this little girl's life, it gets more and more interesting.
When you think Drew has hit the bottom, you turn a page and she goes farther down. It's amazing to see how strong Drew is, and every page is filled with interesting details.
It includes stories about her first drink and more, and you are amazed that such an inasant looking girl was into the worst of drugs. She tells about the terrifying and amazing incidents that came from the drugs. After you are finished, you are interested in knowing more and more about what happened to Drew.
If you want to read a very satisfying book, I highly reccomend this one!

5 out of 5 stars The best book!.......2005-03-19

I used to really dislike Drew Barrymore. ( no offence if u DO read this) i was being forced to read a biography for my lang. arts class so i picked drew cuz she was the only 1 who seemed at least worth reading bout. i dont really want to read bout someone old dead guy. so i started liking her when i started not likeing Adam Sandler as much as i used to cuz thats really the only reason i hated her cuz she was always with adam. i mean now that im not screwed up with adam i c she wasnt always with him @ all. so i started reading it and in so many ways i wanted to b friends with her and help her. but not get high with her. :) its so awesome! now i want to buy it. if i had any advice to give, everyone who thinks their live is bad, read this book. evn if u dont everyone should read this. well i gtg bye this wonderful book bye! Book Description

irls on Film is the wickedly funny and risqu sequel to the bestselling A-List that takes readers behind the scenes of the intoxicating world of Hollywood glitterati. Seventeen year-old Upper East Side blueblood Anna ('pronounced Aaaanah') Percy has moved from posh Manhattan to the even more posh Beverly Hills, California, where she's living with her estranged dad for the rest of the school year while her mother travels to Europe with a friend. Girls on Film begins with Anna's feeling empowered after telling Ben to take a hike. He, however, continues to pursue her - refusing to go back to Princeton without a reconciliation. Anna's just not sure if she buys his New Year's cover story: that he was helping out a celebrity friend who nearly drank herself to death. In the meantime, Anna wonders if she and Adam have any chemistry. Anna also bonds with Sam, and after mentioning Ben's New Year's alibi, the girls try to guess the identity of the mysterious alcoholic celebrity. The list of suspects is a veritable who's who of A-List actresses. Sam invites Anna to a desert spa weekend where, in a climactic finish, we find out whether Dee is actually pregnant with Ben's baby, how Sam resolves her romantic feelings for Anna and, most importantly, whether Ben was acting with pure intentions when he left Anna alone on his boat. The fast times of Beverly Hills most beautiful and glamorous people drive the page-turning action of this irresistible, stylishly written novel.

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up For The A- List.......2007-07-14

Girls on Film by Zoey Dean was another great novel. Zoey did a great job on the second novel in this series. In this novel Anna works with Sam Sharpe on a school project film on the Great Gatsby. During which so, Anna discovers her screen-writing talent. Susan, Anna's sister leaves rehab to come stay with her, but during her stay, Cammie convinces her to drink and she ends up going to a party drunk, but luckily Anna's new friend, Sam, helps her, by telling veryone it was for a movie. Anna also forgives Ben after what he did to her and they get back together. This was another great book by the bestselling author Zoey Dean

3 out of 5 stars The most boring out of the series.......2007-02-01

this one was extremly boring. zoey dean kept reapeating what her characters thought in their head, and dont you get tired of reading the same thing over and over again throughout an entire book?!?!

besides that, she left out one of my favorite characters. which is her dads hired driver for anna. anna described him as a "sexy handsome guy" and i always wanted them to somehow become friends. but in the third book he wasnt even in it.

the first two books were fantastic..this one just repeated itself too much for my liking.

also you can predict whats going to happen.

5 out of 5 stars # two is just as good!.......2006-08-22

Anna Percy is finally over Ben. (at least that's what she keeps telling herself...) Anna starts to really like Adam, a basketball star from Michigan. (Go blue!) She is just starting to let go of Ben and concentrate on her realshionship with Adam, when Ben makes a huge play to win her back. He puts balloons at her house, roses in her room, and even makes a surprise visit asking for her forgiveness. Anna keeps telling Ben (and herself!) that she is done with him, but she starts to wonder whether or not she really is. So, Anna decides to put her relashionship with Adam on hold to clear things up with Ben. After Ben tells her the truth about what happened on New Year's, Anna decides to forgive him. They finally, in the end, get back together again! Yay! Am I the only one that thinks they should be together?
Can't wait to read number three!

5 out of 5 stars The A-List #2: Girls on Film .......2006-06-20

I liked this book just as much as the first one, and I was so happy with the ending I could just die. It reminded me of another sequel I've read, but I just can't think.
Anyways, Susan came to Beverly Hills from rehab and now Cammie is trying to get at Anna by being friends with Susan, and Sam is very confused about her sexuality. Things between Anna and Adam are heating up, but Ben still isn't completely out of the picture.
There are so many twists in one little book, but now that I have the third book in the series I will pick up again right away!

3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-06-16

Since the first book was sooooo good, I was excited to pick up the second one, only to be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, just not as good as the rest. After her emotional night with Ben, Anna decides to go out with high school basketball star Adam. Their first date goes well, but Ben is still on Anna's mind, mainly because he's making a show of trying to get her back. The rest of the gang is along for all their problems.

Book Description

"Before Bond, the parts I used to play in films were demure, sweet, antiseptic and antisex. I wasn't even allowed to think like a woman. Pussy Galore and 007 worked wonders for me."-Honor Blackman, Pussy Galore, Goldfinger

Sexy, stunning, bold, and brazen, the women in James Bond movies are among the most interesting females in films. Attacked by some feminists in the 1960s and 1970s as sex objects, the Bond women today are seen as self-con?dent, sexually assured role models. Teeming with anecdote, first-person testimony, intelligent commentary, and a wealth of visual material, from film stills to memorabilia, Bond Girls Are Forever explores the mystery and mystique behind the Bond women-as heroes and villains, as actors and characters, as love objects and mother figures, as steely bureau-crats and trained killers.

From Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress) rising from the sea in her sexy bikini in Dr. No to secret agent Jinx (Halle Berry) in Die Another Day, the Bond women have had a lasting impact on 007, on the lives of the actresses who played them, and on pop culture. Looking at these icons from both the male and female perspective, this elegant book shows us that no matter how they have changed over time, Bond girls are forever-in the fantasy lives of us all.

this book is fantastic. in a very beautiful and big format, it's complete with all the bondgirls in a great description. very good if you are a bond fan or at least a woman lover!

5 out of 5 stars good bad girls.......2007-01-18

great pictures and an in depth look at each girl and her relationship to the movie

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but more photos needed.......2006-11-05

Overall the book is ok, however for a coffee table sized book (It's rather tall, which makes it awkward to store in a bookcase - well mine anyway) there's not enough photos, and a bit too much text. Almost all of the photos I'd seen before, so while most people new to the Bond world might be impressed, there's not enough unique content to make the book a must have. Actually come to think of it most of the text does seem like filler, too generic to be interesting. A book this size shouldn't be a novel, it should be mostly photos. With only one or two photos per actress there definitely needs to be a lot more photos.

4 out of 5 stars good but could have been better.......2006-03-21

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but when I had read other reviews I hoped for the best. This is not the best. So, what one is the best? It is the one yet to be published. yet I will admitt that this one is the best out there that I have seen. A book on Bond women should have a lot more pictures, and more inside stories would help as well; yes, more photos, that would do the trick.

5 out of 5 stars Bond Girls are Forever: The Women of James Bond.......2005-09-04

If you are a James Bond lover...you will ENJOY this book!!! Great book!!!

Book Description

You don't have to look very far these days to see the influence that the film industry of Hong Kong has had on moviemaking around the world. Hong Kong film stars, such as Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-fat, Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh, have become household names headlining Hollywood blockbusters, while directors such as John Woo, Tsui Hark, and Wong Kar-wai are closing deals in Tinseltown and developing huge international followings.

Despite achieving such recognition abroad, the luster on Hong Kong's homegrown film industry has faded quite a bit over the past decade. However, many Hong Kong cinema aficionados, who passionately followed the rise of the 'Hong Kong New Wave' during the Eighties and early Nineties, only to become increasingly disenchanted since then, are now looking to South Korea for Asia's boldest and most innovative films.

Since 1998, South Korea's local film industry has undergone a remarkable transformation. A new generation of Korean moviemakers is revitalizing the industry with bold arthouse productions, big-budget actioners, thought-provoking dramas, and subversive satires. In some circles, South Korea is even being likened to the new 'Hong Kong', with its film industry on the verge of exploding onto the world stage, similar to how the 'Hong Kong New Wave' catapulted the former British colony and its groundbreaking films into the international spotlight. Already, some Korean films have found success in the North American market arthouse circuit, while Korean directors are being courted by major Hollywood studios for lucrative U.S. remake rights.

"Korean Cinema: The New Hong Kong" is a guidebook for exploring this new and exciting treasure trove of cinema. It is the first book of its kind, covering this emerging cinematic powerhouse in an easy-to-read and leisure-focused fashion, bringing all the sought-after information on Korean cinema into one convenient package. Within the pages of Korean Cinema: The New Hong Kong, you will find:

* A brief history of South Korea and its film industry, which will help you understand the reasons behind the revolutionary changes in Korean cinema and what is influencing the country's directors

* A look at the present state of Korea's filmmaking industry and how it resembles the dot-com era (with the only difference being that these companies are actually making money, and lots of it)

* An examination of the characteristics, themes, and dominant genres of the films in this newest 'Korean New Wave'

* In-depth reviews and commentary of the top ten must-see films of this latest 'Korean New Wave'

* An overview of the top genres of Korean cinema, with reviews, commentary, and notes on availability for the good, the bad, and the ugly

* A look at the stars of Korean cinema, such as the Korean equivalents to Tom Cruise (Han Suk-kyu) and Julia Roberts (Shim Eun-ha).

* How moviegoers can go about seeing Korean flicks (with English subtitles too!)

So sit back, relax, and get ready to be introduced to Korean Cinema: The New Hong Kong!

4 out of 5 stars Modern Korean cinema at an easy glance.......2007-07-25

The odd grammatical and printing error aside, this is a well-produced and easy to use guide to some of the best film-making of the last ten years or so.

It's worth noting quickly that despite the glossy cover, the book is entirely black-and-white inside with pictures that are of an acceptable rather than brilliant quality. Personally, I find this to be a very minor quibble.

I was already very enthused by recent Korean cinema before reading this book and have enjoyed it very much, but it would also make an ideal introduction for someone only just thinking of dipping their toes into the invigorating waters of the Korean New Wave.

I can't fully appreciate the frequent comparisons made with Hong Kong film-making of the 1980s having seen very little of it, but it hardly matters; this book puts across in no uncertain terms just how exciting the film scene in Korea has been for the last decade, and it would be a hard-hearted person who isn't stimulated to seek out a DVD or a viewing of some of the films reviewed here.

This is not to say, however, that the book is unbalanced. The author's enthusiasm for Korean cinema is obvious, but does not stop him criticising those films - some, even, that have done very well at the box office - that he considers do not come up to scratch.

The book is sensibly laid out to make it easy to either read straight through or dip into for specific information. It begins with a brief - and NOT heavy-going - history of the Korean film industry coming right up to the beginning of the 21st century. There then follows a chapter of in-depth reviews of 10 of the best Korean films that 'Everyone Should See'. After that the chapters are divided up by film genre (Action, Horror, etc.), and there are 87 (yes, I counted!) high-quality reviews in all. The last few chapters introduce some of the rising stars of the industry, give some assistance to those wishing to find and see these films, and look to the future of Korean film-making.

The only major disappointment for me was that due to the book's having been published in 2002, wonderful films such as A Bittersweet Life, Memories of Murder and Save the Green Planet! are not included, having been released from 2003 onwards. It would be silly to complain about this type of issue since it is inevitable, but here's hoping for a new edition of Korean Cinema: The New Hong Kong sometime soon because the cinematic gems just keep on coming!

3 out of 5 stars Mistitled, but a just-passable introductory piece for newcomers.......2005-12-22

KOREAN CINEMA: THE NEW HONG KONG is clearly the product of a genuine convert to the form. Whether Anthony C.Y. Leong has remained so is anyone's guess as of late, but it indeed comes as a small surprise that this book was written by a regular contributor to Thomas Weisser's execrable ASIAN CULT CINEMA magazine, a publication that has done more to pigeonhole Asian cinema into one gigantic bowl of sex and sadism than any Pink-film-loving pervert could do in a lifetime.

From evidence provided here, though, Leong's passion for movies (which is also evidenced via various online review portals, the style here being little better than that) is better served by self-published efforts such as this than it is sandwiched between the salacious and error-ridden pages of Weisser's rag. Weisser's ASIAN CULT CINEMA book, a late-90's reference guide to Hong Kong cinema that has disseminated more MISinformation to the world than any fifty amateur fanzines could circa 1990, is still being peddled to an unsuspecting base of newcomers (I've yet to ascertain whether Leong was a contributor, but it's likely), so it's refreshing to know that viewers curious about Korean cinema at least have a reference guide that, while not blessed with particularly great prose, is at least honest and forthight in its appreciation of its subject matter, without resorting to the cheap putdowns and mysogynist leanings of the Weisser material with which its author, perhaps unwittingly, has previously been associated.

Leong is, however, WAY WAY OFF BASE in labelling Korean cinema "The New Hong Kong." The assumption that one country's cinematic fare is so lacking in cultural identity that it stands only to supplant the fare of another country - following that all Asian cinema somehow "blends" together in the eyes of outsiders - is simplistic and ill-informed to say the least. Leong, who is Chinese, makes repeated commentary about the downfall of Hong Kong cinema while holding Korean cinema up as the natural successor to the throne. Hong Kong cinema, however, is still very much alive and kicking, and while Korean cinema has certainly enjoyed a renaissance of sorts (both domestically and internationally) since the release of the high-tech action thriller SHIRI in 1999, nearly seven years on, many Korean films are still plagued by tired concepts, poorly-plotted screenplays, crass histrionics, and various culturally-specific idosyncracies that may yet be their undoing in the international market once the demand for genre pictures has dried up (as I write this, the Korean DVD market is in a serious state of financial decline). (2007 EDIT: much of this has come to pass: Korean films are garnering fewer distribs at film festivals, and they're lucky if they get one or two breakout smashes a year; DVD sales are nearlly dead in the country. They're still making films worth watching, but the industry is in serious pain right now.

However, Leong's book generally covers films from 1998 to 2002, which any Korean film fan will tell you is the period they first "discovered" Korean cinema, too. And as such, the book clearly is/was a labour of love. More scholarly books have been written on Korean cinema both before and since Leong's self-published tome, but none have ventured to simply provide straight-up reviews of the many varied films that came from this period, so depite his web-forum-worthy writing style, Leong still managed a small victory for the fanboys.. Mind you, scholarly works on Korean cinema (and Korea itself!) are virtually required reading--I strongly prefer them to a book like this--if one is to truly understand the cultural subtext running through much of modern Korean cinema. Thus, Leong's book stands as the best place to START your journey, but once you've seen the films, and if you truly want to know more, then it might be good to augment this book with a more serious cultural, cinematic or even socio-political study.

The format of Leong's reviews is a bit too structurally consistent (intro-synopsis-opinion-rinse-repeat), which means they're best digested a few at a time, preferably just before of just after watching the film in question, which will at least grant the book an extended shelf life as the reader builds a Korean DVD collection. Also, the reviews are grouped into "categories," which is restrictive, particularly as many of the films aren't so easily pigeonholed. It's a small gripe, admittedly, but straightforward alphebetical listings would be much more user-friendly.

Since the book's publication at the very beginning of 2003, however, Korean cinema has produced an incredible number of feature films -ranging from derivative-but-pretty junk like MY BOYFRIEND IS TYPE B and RED EYE to international arthouse darlings like OLDBOY and TAE GUK GI - that would be well served by an update to Leong's manuscript, something which has yet to take place but would firmly cement his position as one of the few non-internet-based reviewers to tackle the subject matter in this way. One hopes that the visible reduction in his output might mean he's working on a revised version of his book, but as he's not one to return emails from interested supporters (especially those who are, at the same time, like myself, openly hostile towards his previous "employer," Miami-based bootlegger and "author" Thomas Weisser), we may simply have to wait and see what comes next, if anything...

4 out of 5 stars A good primer to recent Korean Cinema.......2005-11-19

I have been interested in Korean cinema ever since I worked in Korea as an ESL teacher. My first Korean DVD purchases were Shiri and JSA, which I brought more for novelty and and as a momento of Korea than anything else, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised at the production values of both these movies. As a result, I have become a firm fan of Korean movies, and have added a number of titles to my DVD collection. This book will help me select some more good titles to add to the collection.

"Korean Cinema" fulfills a useful niche as it is basically a primer for Korean movies from 1998 to 2002 for newcomers to Korean cinema. The author reviews and rates a number of the movies made in this time span, from "Attack the Gas Station" through to "2009: Lost Memories", plus a couple of titles a couple of years older. The author also rates and discusses 10 Korean movies from that time period which he rates as must sees. It would be a good start for building a DVD collection. There is also a section devoted to the major personalities of the Korean movie industry, actors and directors. It is illustrated but only in black and white, any many of the pictures are of poor quality.

Ignore the low rating reviews of this book - the reviewers obviously brought this book expecting a serious textbook of Korean cinema, which if you actually read the advertising blurb for the book, it is most certainly not. There are books out there discussing the full history of Korean cinema, but make no mistake, this book is not one of them. It is strictly for the newcomers to the genre, and who has little knowledge of the Korean movie industry. It does have a chapter on the history of the industry in Korea, but it is only superficial, and it isn't the reason I brought the book anyway.

Especially ignore the twit who is critical of the author basing his movie reviews on english subtitles. Korean is a particularly difficult language to learn and to become sufficiently competent in the language to be able to follow a Korean movie without english subtitles is beyond the abilities of all but the most dedicated of people. The author of "Korean Cinema" does make it quite clear he is only a recent convert, and thus a beginner, in Korean movies.

This book would lend itself to an update every 3 or 4 years or so. There has been some considerably significant Korean movie releases since this book was first published, not least of which is "Tae-Guk-Gi". I also recommend checking out the website www.koreanfilm.org which has movie reviews, talent profiles and other useful informative articles. The author of the site, Darcy Paquet, is listed in the bibliography of "Korean Cinema" a number of times.

5 out of 5 stars There should be more books like this.......2004-01-16

I received this for Christmas from my boyfriend and read it from cover to cover by New Years: its that good. Its like reading a magazine dedicated completely to Korean movies. Now when I go to the local Korean video store, I know which movies are worth renting and which ones to stay away from. Whoever wrote this, thank you for helping me appreciate some of the best movies in the world.

5 out of 5 stars I hope there's a sequel!.......2003-08-28

What a great book! Everything you need to know about Korean movies all in one package. With lots of background on why Korean movies kick ass right now, what movies are worth watching, and which ones should be avoided, you definetely get your money's worth here. I hope he writes another one soon!

Book Description

The Ziegfeld Follies, Florenz Ziegfeld's stage spectacular, promised the best performers, the most lavish sets, and the most ravishing girls. Doris Eaton Travis was one of these prized beauties–and, at 14, was chosen as the youngest chorus girl in the Follies. "Mine eyes are yet dim with the luminous beauty of a girl named Doris," one Chicago reviewer wrote.

Today, at the age of 102, Eaton is the last living Ziegfeld girl. Over the past century, she has performed for presidents and princesses, entertained Gershwin, Lindbergh, and Astaire, starred in silent and talking pictures, bantered with Babe Ruth, offended Henry Ford, outlived six siblings, written a newspaper column, hosted a television show, earned a Phi Beta Kappa degree in history, raised turkeys, and raced horses. Century Girl is a visual tour of this extraordinary woman's journey through the ages.

5 out of 5 stars A loving tribute to an extrordinary woman........2007-09-03

Century Girl: 100 Years in the Life of Doris Eaton Travis, Last Living Star of the Ziegfeld Follies is a new order of biography. Lauren Redniss uses hand-written text as an artistic element to guide the eye through the evocative images she has created using photo-collage and line drawings. The result is a visually stunning tour of the extraordinary life of Doris Eaton Travis

The book chronicles the life of Norman, Oklahoma, resident and University of Oklahoma graduate Doris Eaton Travis. The book follows Travis and her siblings, once known as the Eatons of Broadway, from their lives as child actors, to their success in theater and early films, and ultimately to their sad and often tragic fates.

Travis alone was able to leave show business behind. She had the strength to adapt herself when circumstances demanded; from dancer, to entrepreneur, to book-keeper on a horse ranch, to college graduate at 88 years old. She returned to the Broadway stage at the age of 94 and recieved an honorary doctorate at 100. Her's is a story of reinvention and ultimately of success.

Lauren Redniss teaches at the Parson's School in New York City. Her work is often seen on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times, which nominated her for the Pulitzer Prize. She is currently writing a biography of Marie Curie, due out in the fall.

This book is a work of art from cover to cover. Redniss knows her subject well and the story is told largely in Travis' own words. It is the author's unique, artistic approach that brings this fascinating story to life so vibrantly and with such immediacey.

In one section of the book, for example, Redniss discusses Travis' sister Mary Eaton's beauty, and the eagerness with which men gave her expensive gifts. The text takes the reader to photographs of Eaton in a seductive pose layered over images of Eaton's name in lights on the marquis of the New Amsterdam Theater. These images flow into a still photo from Eaton's starring role in Glorifying the American Girl. As we read of Eaton's beauty, we see coming off the page a Broadway star at the height of her fame and a woman who epitomizes beauty in the early twentieth century....and we understand why men were so easily parted from their money.

The artistic elements flow together seamlessly and carry the reader through this lovingly crafted biography. Redniss' incredible images allow the reader to experience the lives of Travis and her family in ways that text alone simply doesn't allow.

This book would appeal to anyone interested in dance or theater history. It has appeal to the general reader as well. Doris Eaton Travis is an extraordinary human being. Her ability to overcome tragedy, to reinvent herself, and to constantly strive to learn is an inspiration to all. Lauren Redniss' extaordinary book is the perfect vehicle to bring her inspiring story to life.

5 out of 5 stars eye candy at its best.......2007-05-17

Have you ever looked through an old school yearbook where handwritten script accompanies carefully cropped pictures to make art? My grandma's yearbook from 1918 was like this. So is this gem by Lauren Redniss. The text and the artful images tugged at my heart and had me reading anxiously onward. It is as much a journey through this past century as it is a tribute to one remarkable lady. This was worth every cent!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book About a Remarkable Life.......2006-12-10

Lauren Redniss' Century Girl is a work of art that tells the story of a remarkable woman, Doris Eaton Travis. It is visually stunning -- the colors and art/photos/clippings and presentation make the cleverly inked biographical words LIVE on the page. And though longevity is one of the book's hooks -- "100 years in the life..." -- it is really about LIVING life, really, truly living life. It's a very unique experience reading this book -- you open a page and the gorgeous, artistic presentation really draws your eyes. You soak it all in, and then you read the words. As you read the words, you take in the art in a new way, and the words and the art combine to unfold the story in a really wonderful way. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars "It's the top, it's the coliseum".......2006-12-01

Everything about this vivacious book gives me a thrill. From the life and times of Doris Eaton herself (my latest and greatest role model - Please, God, let me live so long and be so grand!) to Ms. Redniss' swell and funky collaged interpretations of it, these are book dollars well-spent. Century Girl is a BIG, juicy tome of a book with a fabulous and sturdy library binding and thick glossy pages.

Whether you're a fan of cutting edge book design, collage, the 1920's, or the Ziegfield Follies, do your coffee or bedside table a sweet favor and grace it with this book before another week passes you by. And don't forget the tables at your Aunties' and your best girlfriends'.

This is a book to give anyone you're really crazy about.

4 out of 5 stars High-kicking hybrid.......2006-11-20

This book is an engaging blend of art journal, visual bio, and time-travel archive. Although the book documents the life of a bygone
Ziegfeld Folly-dolly, it is really a prime example of how a nearly-forgotten pile of clippings and ephemera can be turned into a fascinating
bit of visual magic. The author/artist shows a strong affinity and tenderness for her subject, and yet she breathes new (vibrant) life into the story of Doris Eaton Travis; and creates a fascinating visual diary
in the bargain. Although the target audience for this book is probably theatre buffs and historians, I would suggest that many of my "tribe" who love art journals, altered books, and mixed media artwork will find it to be full of ideas. Visually-fascinating and engaging.
