Dennis Hopper: Paintings, Photographs, Films
ASIN: 3775710302
Release Date: 2001-09-02 |
Book Description
Dennis Hopper, one of Hollywood's last great cult figures, is best known for his depiction of social outcasts in films such as Rebel Without a Cause and Apocalypse Now, as well as for directing classic films like Easy Rider. Hopper has also, however, made a name for himself as an artist and a photographer. His photographic chronicle of America in the 1960s, a decade marked by awakening and rebellion and documented by Hopper in forceful black-and-white pictures, has now become legendary. A System of Moments, published on the occasion of a major retrospective exhibition at the MAK, Vienna, is a kaleidoscopic documentation of painting, photography, film, and life. It is the first comprehensive publication that takes in to account all of the diverse artistic activities in Hopper's nearly 50-year career, and it examines particularly the subtle connection between genres that is a hallmark of his work. For the first time, recent photographic works, which emerged after a long hiatus from the medium in the 1990s, are also presented. A major retrospective that will be the definitive statement on Hopper's career.
Book Description
"One of the fastest ways to provide an understanding is through a story or a visual. Film clips do both. This book is an invaluable aid to any staff developer who wants to captivate an audience and teach at the same time."
-Dr. Ruby Payne, President
aha! Process, Inc.
"Because our metaphorical minds learn through finding patterns, relationships, and analogies, the use of film clips to illuminate such elusive but enduring values as persistence, courage, empathy, creativity, and hope can accelerate their meanings more powerfully than any lecture, definition, or description."
-Arthur L. Costa, Professor Emeritus
California State University Sacramento
Make training fun, engaging, and rewarding with this powerful and readily available technology!
Video and DVD clips give participants an opportunity to explore values and ideas, learn about one another, and, in the process, build a stronger learning community.
Energizing Staff Development Using Film Clips is a collection of film and television clips that staff developers can use to encourage discussion and reflection on pertinent, common themes, including courage, communication, change, conflict, creativity, and leadership. Each chapter includes real-life examples of how clips may be used in staff development settings, quotes for extending thinking and discussion, and articles and books that relate to the chapter theme.
Each film clip section includes:
- A synopsis of the scene
- An explanation of critical themes
- Start and stop times
- The length of the clip
- Suggested discussion questions
- Contexts for use
These stimulating, instructive film clips lead to helpful conversations, create positive plans of action, and promote learning through reflection. Whether planning a team meeting, a faculty meeting, or a training program, leaders and organizations will find a clip to generate conversations about many of the most pressing issues in education.

Cinema And Modernity
ASIN: 0822320762 |
Book Description
In Empty Moments, Leo Charney describes the defining quality of modernity as “drift”—the experience of being unable to locate a stable sense of the present. Through an exploration of artistic, philosophical, and scientific interrogations of the experience of time, Charney presents cinema as the emblem of modern culture’s preoccupation with the reproduction of the present.
Empty Moments creates a catalytic dialogue among those who, at the time of the invention of film, attempted to define the experience of the fleeting present. Interspersing philosophical discussions with stylistically innovative prose, Charney mingles Proust’s conception of time/memory with Cubism’s attempt to interpret time through perspective and Surrealism’s exploration of subliminal representations of the present. Other topics include Husserl’s insistence that the present can only be fantasy or fabrication and the focus on impossibility, imperfection, and loss in Kelvin’s laws of thermodynamics. Ultimately, Charney’s work hints at parallels among such examples, the advent and popularity of cinema, and early film theory.
A book with a structural modernity of its own, Empty Moments will appeal to those interested in cinema and its history, as well as to other historians, philosophers, literary, and cultural scholars of modernity.
Book Description
In a successful action adventure script, there are more than just hot pursuits and hotheaded slugfests. This book investigates the screenwriting principles that define the content and style of the most popular film genre.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading and unorganized.......2007-04-18
This book seems to be written by amatures!
It is unorganized, I could not follow the subject that the author is explaining.
It is a research book rather that intended for eduaction.
If you want to write a film, please ignore this book.
If you are a regular movie goer, take it, if you have a spare of 10 $.Probably you will know more about the dynamics of the action film
Don't Waste Your Money.......2003-06-19
The positive reviews here obviously come from Hicks' pals (check out his website). The book is poorly-written, incoherent, and gives no specific (or recognizable) advice on how to write an action film. It is basically a rambling (and very odd)discourse on the history of war movies.
I can highly recommend Tobin, Epstein, Martell, and Walker if you want to learn how to write action--or any other--films.
A lot of fluff.......2002-12-08
Not a lot of substance here. I did not find this book at all useful, a waste of money over all. A lot of talk about nothing specific, writer wonders around willy nilly, and no real how tos. Information such as formatting of action elements, or just how specific you should be when writing action scenes would have been much better served here, but alas, not to be. Books such as Crafty Screenwriting or Screenwriters Bible go much, much further.
Want to understand the Action Adventure Genre? This is it!.......2002-05-03
If you want to understand the Action Adventure Genre, this is THE book. Great models, insights, rules to use or break.
Neill Hicks is a screenwriter who's written scripts that have been made into successful hit movies -- Rumble in The Bronx, First Strike. There are a lot of books on screenwriting written by people who are still trying to see their script go to production, let alone be a hit. This book's wisdom, insight and practial observations and advice shows why Hicks made it.
He has a very nice across genre model of protagonist characteristics which he also mentioned more briefly in his previous book, Screenwriting 101-- another excellent source.
A straightforward, sensible, "user friendly" primer.......2002-04-09
Writing The Action-Adventure Film: The Moment Of Truth by professional screenwriter Neill D. Hicks ("Rumble in the Bronx"; "First Strike") is a straightforward, sensible, "user friendly" primer for creating a solid screenplay specifically for one of the most popular movie genres in America. Individual chapters specifically address issues of characterization, plot structure, pitfalls, and the strengths of the Action-Adventure film genre, as well as what the audience expects when they go to see the latest action movie. If you are contemplating, or already involved in, scripting an Action-Adventure screenplay, then give Neill Hicks' Writing The Action-Adventure Film an immediate and careful reading.

A must for cinephiles!.......2007-01-12
I have long been a fan of McDonagh's snappily written and imformative column "Flick Chick" and this newest addition to her published work doesn't disappoint.
Book Lust is divided into cleverly titled sections that reflect the intelligence and humor that I've enjoyed in her reviews on the [...] site. The groupings of films are unusual and thought-provoking. My particular favorites are: Back to the Beach, Bad Santas, Everything is Beautiful at the Ballet, On the Road (a wonderful list of road movies I can GUARANTEE you've never seen listed together before), Science Fiction Double Feature, Subway Series, that 70s Picture Show, and the Zombie Stomp. And the occasional personal comments truly spoke to me (like watching King Kong on Thanksgiving-what was up with that?-and I'm dying to know what was the reaction she mentioned to the spider creature in John Carpenter's The Thing when the author first saw the film).
All in all this is a smart, funny and interesting book for anyone who truly enjoys movies. I am looking forward to purchasing More Movie Lust, or perhaps it should be entitled Movie Lust: The Sequel.
re: Movie Lust.......2007-01-10
If you love movies, or have friends who love movies- this is one of the most fun, informative, and entertaining books you could own or give as a gift. What a blast.
Bon Bons and Bon Mots for the Cine-Minded.......2006-12-25
Some people who feel they already know a lot about movies may automatically turn up their noses at a book of "Recommended Viewing for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason," but they should do a double take where MOVIE LUST is concerned. This is a very smart, very savvy book, written without pretension or a narrow focus -- and I say that as someone who knows a lot about movies. It covers everyone from Jean Vigo to Ron Jeremy, and always with the same intelligence. Maitland McDonagh's way with words serves to stimulate the appetite to finally track down long postponed classics, to blaze new trails of viewing, and to revisit old favorites. If your DVD collection is even half the size of mine, you probably have trouble deciding what to pull off the shelf for an evening's viewing. If that sounds like a problem you've had before, I recommend spending ten minutes or so browsing through MOVIE LUST before tackling your monolithic wall of viewing options. It's so much fun to peruse, in fact, you might find yourself spending the night reading instead. I give this book 5 stars because I feel it fulfills its purpose admirably.
'LUST' A MUST FOR MOVIE NUTS.......2006-12-23
McDonagh assembles a fun collection of succinct, celluloid-savvy chapters covering an impressive range of cinematic subgenres, from silents made in the sound era ("Hush!") to killer Clauses ("Bad Santas"), along with insightful filmmaker sketches (e.g., John Frankenheimer, Abel Ferrara). With a style at once erudite and breezy, McDonagh's book supplies fun for hardcore cinephiles and useful recommendations for casual viewers.
Movie Lust is a MUST!!!.......2006-12-22
I love this book and use it as a point of reference all of the time. I read a page or two at random and it sparks an interest in a film that I have never seen or have not seen in a long time. Then I get the DVD and view it with a new set of glasses -- a fresh perspective. Some of the anecdotes have me laughing out loud. If you Love movies (like I do) then you'll love MOVIE LUST.

Book Description
"He persuasively demonstrates that horror films are not merely a manifestation of the solitary, unconscious 'I' or cultural abjection. . . . This well-crafted, insightful, and devilishly witty study brings horror out from under the psychoanalytic rock to let it scurry and bleed in the daylight of everyday life. The detailed endnotes are scintillating gems in and of themselves." --Choice "Terror and Everyday Life is an important, well-conceived, and well-executed work. Crane's treatment of the topic is unusual; he clearly positions himself as a fan of the contemporary horror film. Consequently, there are moments that seem to revel in the disgusting details of murder and mayhem. However, this approach is appropriate; as Crane makes perfectly clear, this is what the genre is about, so to ignore it would be to misrepresent its effects and--for horror fans--its pleasures. This is a complex scholarly work, exceptionally original." --Charles R. Acland, Communication Department, The University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada How does horror in film relate to the horror we experience in everyday life? This is one of the key questions addressed in this new examination of the horror film genre. Terror and Everyday Life argues that today's horror films have broken away from the genre's tradition to embrace far more violent imagery, images that are in keeping with the escalating violence in our society. By examining the horror film, its history, and its current trends, Jonathan Lake Crane furthers our understanding of the genre's meaning in today's culture and our fascination with violence. An important supplement for courses in popular culture, media studies, and film; Terror and Everyday Life's unique approach on the nature of horror in our society will also be of interest in a wide range of disciplines.

Book Description
Frank Sinatra at a recording session, Marilyn Monroe giggling with Betty Grable, Clark Gable making an entrance at a premiere: showbiz photographer Murray Garrett had a knack for catching movie idols in unguarded moments. In this beautiful black-and-white album, an eagerly awaited follow-up to his highly successful Hollywood Candid, Garrett showcases 145 surprisingly intimate, sometimes irreverent images from Hollywood's heyday, including never-before-seen shots of celebrities such as Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck-plus, of course, Bogey and Bacall.
A true insider, Garrett has been a fly on the wall at many a private party, and he's not above a little exclusive insight. The personal reminiscences that enliven these photos offer armchair stargazers unique insight into the private lives, loves, and off-screen looks of Hollywood's leading men and women.

Customer Reviews:
Great companion to the movie.......2001-06-03
I got this after falling in love with the movie Cradle Will Rock, and it did not fail to amaze me! It balances a script with so much historical information to back it up, insights, and pictures both from the movie and the real moments of Cradle Will Rock. It has informational blurbs about Marc Blitzstein: Composer and Enigma, Orson Welles, Hallie Flanagan, Christopher Marlowe and the questioning of him being a communist, the real Olive Stanton, the death of Vaudeville, Diego Rivera, and so many other things. It also has great pictures from the film, including some candid shots. I used it as a source on my paper on the Federal Theatre Project, it's an excellent source of historical information, but it's also very entertaining to read! The day I got it I spent hours going through it. It's well worth the money, my favorite coffee table book!
Bravo!.......2001-01-04
This book includes movie script, many photos and the historical notes about the U.S. in 1930s.
The main plot is as follows: In the age of the Great Depression, the Federal Theater Project gave many U.S. people encouraging entertainment, and gave many actors and artists their jobs. The movement gave birth to Marc Blitzstein's masterpiece 'Cradle Will Rock' (directed by Orson Welles), but the play offended the reactionary congressmen. They made their soldiers lock out the theater. 'Cradle Will Rock,' can't the play see the light? Or...
In addition, the movie has the clash between Diego Rivera and Nelson Rockfeller over the Rockfeller Center's mural, etc. And the book has the detailed background notes of the movie. They are a great help for me. For example, I thought red-hunting movement was made by the Republicans, but it's my misunderstanding. And I learn that Harlem Renaissance (I like Zora Neale Hurston) wasn't an isolated and mutant movement. Etc, etc.
The movie and the book represent artists' courage. In the afterword, Tim Robbins says 'I believe threre are already too many artists who censor themselves.' I, too, think so. Bravo, Tim and his comrades ('gangs'?)! A toast to your brilliance, effort and bravery!
Lovely companion to the movie........2000-01-19
The book is lovely, it includes the script, a foreward by Paul Newman, wonderful photos and historical background. A must have for fans of the movie. However, the hardcover version of this book has only 150 pages (including the index) not 208 as advertised, so you are getting more than a quarter less book for your money.
