5 out of 5 stars A Push to a Certain Path at a Certain Time...to Reach Our Certain Purpose.......2007-07-22

In "A Hand to Guide Me," American film star and legend, Denzel Washington, sets out shine a light on the 100 year old Boy's & Girl's Clubs of America, an organization of 3,700 serving more than 4.4 million children in all 50 states. Washington's eventual success can be traced directly to the Boys Club in his home town, Mt. Vernon, New York. It was there, by necessity, that he learned purpose, consequences, and how to be a man.

"A Hand to Guide Me" is a collection of short stories by ordinary people from ordinary beginnings, accomplishing extraordinary things. Six dozen people from diverse backgrounds share their memories about role models, mentors and positive influences in their lives. Some are household names like coach John Wooden, director John Singleton, author Toni Morrison, General Wesley Clark and former President Jimmy Carter. Many are alumni of Girls and Boys Clubs of America, while others have taken on leadership roles in these clubs. And some were asked to contribute because there was something to learn from their voice. These are very readable stories ranging in length from two to four pages.

All of the contributors have outgrown a hardship or two to reach a significant level of success and can draw a line from their success to some rock solid foundational experience - sometimes it is a parent, a coach, a neighbor or the inspiration derived from a tragic event.

Washington's resonant message is that we are all extraordinary in our own way but we don't go it alone. There are people on whose shoulders we stand and we, in turn, can provide a shoulder for others.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America are the center of everything for many kids today, providing a shoulder for millions of kids and making a vital contribution to the future of our society. They are a breeding ground for hope, purpose, and direction - where many have learned strength, confidence, and the freedom to dream...to think big.

4 out of 5 stars Diverse Reflections of Role Models.......2007-06-15

Denzel Washington uses his star power to assemble personal recollections from assorted successful folks (primarily alumnae of the Boys and Girls Clubs Organizations) about the people who shaped THEIR lives as youngsters.

Some of the stories are more interesting and inspiring than others, and I couldn't help but wonder if this volume couldn't have benefitted from more cohesive editing. But the bottom line is that these are positive and uplifting pages that remind us "if you want to change history, start by changing the life of a child."

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and inspiring read.......2007-04-10

Denzel Washington has captured the most interesting and inspiring series of short stories and memories I have read in a long time. The people on these pages have very compelling stories and are well written.

5 out of 5 stars Useful in and out of the classroom.......2007-04-06

I bought this book to use in the classroom. I teach high school students and I think its really important that students these days read about people who made it in life and have a good message to give to the students. In this book there are so many positive stories and very short stories that students will not get bored.

Washington really pulled it off by making the book and the stories in it the star. One can look at the cover of the book and think that maybe its all about Washington but its not. There are stories from Bill Clinton to Jimmy Carter. It's really a fantastic read and I think it has helped many of my young male students who have been searching for a role model.

Book Description

Tony Dungy's words and example have intrigued millions of people, particularly following his victory in Super Bowl XLI, the first for an African American coach. How is it possible for a coach--especially a football coach--to win the respect of his players and lead them to the Super Bowl without the screaming histrionics, the profanities, the demand that the sport come before anything else? How is it possible for anyone to be successful without compromising faith and family? In this inspiring and reflective memoir, Coach Dungy tells the story of a life lived for God and family--and challenges us all to redefine our ideas of what it means to succeed. Includes a foreword by Denzel Washington and a 16-page color photo insert.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2007-10-01

"Quiet Strength" is incredible - the reality of Tony Dungy's faith is an inspiration and a great help for anyone in their relationships with others.

5 out of 5 stars A book that goes beyond the confines of football's playing field........2007-10-01

If you decided to read this book because you are a football fan, well that's only part of the story. Tony Dungy has a perspective that reaches far beyond the boundaries of the gridiron. His is a story of relationships, both personal and spiritual, rooted in family and faith. Dungy focuses on the character building aspects of every situation, whether they are triumphs or tragedies and his desire to maintain an unwavering awareness of the presence of God. What separates this book from many others is the attitude toward being a winner in football and in life. Chapter 11 begins with a quote from former Steelers head coach Chuck Noll: "I would rather play well and lose than play poorly and win." Those words stuck in my mind as I read this chapter in particular. Tony Dungy builds on coach Noll's philosophy here and defines success with these profound words: "We're not all going to reach the Super Bowl or the top of the corporate ladder, but we each have a chance to walk away from something saying, I did the ordinary things as well as I could. I performed to the full limits of my ability. I achieved success." That becomes the true essence of Tony Dungy, a wise and humble man. Those words continue to echo throughout this story to become an inspiration for everyone who reads them.

5 out of 5 stars Written with focus on faith and a life lived with purpose.......2007-10-01

What readers may find most surprising about this powerful memoir is how little Dungy focuses on the importance of football, considering his role as the FIRST Afro-American coach of a winning Super Bowl team. I found it inspiring that he wrote this book with a clear determination to keep things balanced. Some readers might be put off by that and if you don't like faith-based memoirs, please be aware that each chapter begins with a scriptural or inspirational quote.

Starting off with a strong foreword by Denzel Washington and his wife, it is clear that this book is going to focus on the guiding principles that directs Dungy's life. Thoaw principles are his strong religious faith and the belief that football is one way that he can live and model the meaning of living a balanced, purposeful life. As he puts it himself (although I may not be quoting his exact words), football is like life in the sense that after one challenge, one game, is complete he and the rest of the team must focus on the next goal. They can't linger too long on one defeat or win. Also, even football comes second to God in his life and the overwhelming need to have a meaningful life.

Dungy is not one to wear his heart on his sleeve, so some might find this book a bit restrained, although hs is fairly open about the ups and downs of his career, his time with the Buccaneers, etc. I think he is most open when discussing the suicide of his son and his continuing bafflement about how and why this occurred. ALso touching is his account of meeting his wife, his initial reluctance to be set up on a date with her, a view which quickly changed once he met her.

His recounting of the events leading up to the Super Bowl are fascinating. All in all, a very solid book with Dungy being determined to put himself second and God first.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy.......2007-09-30

Was a great book, bought for my husbands birthday. He really liked it and we were very happy with the shipping and service through Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-09-28

Although I am not a football fan, I cannot say enough how much this book blessed my life and changed my own perspective on my walk w/ Christ. Tony Dungy is an amazing man, and I give God the glory for putting it on his heart to grace our lives w/ this inspiring story. It is a must-read for anyone who seeks to live a better life.

Book Description

"What, my dear Lady Disdain! Are you yet living?" These famous lines from Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing delightfully show the verbal sparring between the reluctant lovers, Beatrice and Benedick who are happily brought together at the end by the schemes of their friends. And, no story is complete without at least one evil character, Don John, who unsuccessfully tries to tear apart the wedding plans of Hero and Claudio, the other lovers in this sparkling tale.

Written in rhyming couplets, Much Ado About Nothing, the eighth book in this successful series, captures all the exciting elements of the original story, and is truly a delightful read for both adult and child.

Lois Burdett has been a teacher at Hamlet Public School in Stratford, Ontario, for over twenty years and her expertise in bringing Shakespeare to life for children as young as seven is reflected in the children's clever insights and wonderful drawings which complement the play.

Her success has resulted in an ever-increasing demand for workshops as far afield as Europe and Australia where she instructs educators on how they too can familiarize young children with Shakespeare.

From the Foreword by Denzel Washington

"[Lois Burdett's] delightfully entertaining text is complemented by her students' thoughtful interpretations and charming artwork which make Much Ado About Nothing come alive in a whole new way."

5 out of 5 stars Book of the Year!!! I'd give it 10 stars.........2003-08-23

This is one of those series that is so well done you can't imagaine EVERYONE not knowing about it! Have you always been a bit out of the loop or intimidated about Shakespear? Or are you good with it but don't know how to show/share that love with your family and students. This series will do it!! It's good for ALL ages, my middle school students found it fun and informative yet... really young (4ish) children could learn from it too. Save your self the upgrade and buy it in hardback, this will be one that you keep for generations and get the "WHOLE" series, each one is just as good as the other!

East of the Sun and West of the Moon has always been my favorite fairy tale and I collect different versions. I was excited to find an audio version until I heard it. The music is very distracting and makes listening to the words difficult. There is nothing wrong with just reading a story. The human voice is melodic enough that you don't need to add all that other stuff. It changes the whole mood of the story and I really didn't like it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is as appealing as its subject.......2000-03-26

I admire Denzel Washington very much as an actor, so I decided to read this book. After I have finished reading it, I was not disappointed with him as a man. This book is an accurate, though modest, description of Washington's life up-to-date (1994-1996). It tells about his childhood, youth, and his family background. Then, the author goes into tracing Washington's life according to the films, he has been making at the time. This book does not have a lot of good pictures and it is not about a "Hollywood Hunk", "the most handsome man", etc. Instead, it talks about a real man, who is very good at acting as well as at living his life of a Hollywood star. If you like Washigton as an actor and as a personality (granted, he is also an undisputedly and exremely charming man), then you should read this book and see how he became what he is now.

Book Description

He was, for decades, one of the most recognizable figures in the cultural landscape, his image epitomizing a golden age of American show business. His career spanned a lifetime, but for years he has remained hidden behind the persona he so vigorously generated, and so fiercely protected. Now, in this surprising, illuminating, and compulsively readable biography, we are taken beyond the icon, into the extraordinary, singular life of Sammy Davis, Jr.

In scrupulous detail and with stunning powers of evocation, Wil Haygood takes us back to the era of vaudeville, where it all began for four-year-old Sammy who ran out onstage one night and stole the show. From then on it was a motherless childhood on the road, singing and dancing his way across a segregated America with his father and the formidable showman Will Mastin, struggling together to survive the Depression and the demise of vaudeville itself.

With an ambition honed by poverty and an obsessive need for applause, Sammy drove his way into the nightclub circuit of the 1940s and 1950s, when, his father and Mastin aging and out of style, he slowly began to make a name for himself, hustling his way to top billing and eventually to recording contracts. From there, he was to stake his claim on Broadway, in Hollywood, and, of course, in Las Vegas.

Haygood brings Sammy’s showbiz life into full relief against the backdrop of an America in the throes of racial change. Sammy grew up trapped between the worlds of blacks and whites, with so much invested in both. He made his living entertaining white people but was often denied service in the very venues he played. Drafted into a newly integrated U.S. Army in the 1940s, he saw up close the fierce tensions that seethed below the surface. Dragged into the civil rights movement, he witnessed a hatred that often erupted into violence. In his broad and varied friendships and alliances (with Frank Sinatra; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Richard Nixon; Sidney Poitier; Marilyn Monroe, to name just a few), not to mention his romances (his relationship with Kim Novak and his marriage to the blond beauty May Britt drew death threats), he forged uncharted paths across racial lines. Admired and reviled by both blacks and whites, he was tormented all his life by raging insecurities, and never quite came to terms with his own skin. Ultimately, his only true sense of his identity was as a performer.

Based on painstaking research and more than 250 interviews, Wil Haygood brings us a sweeping and vivid cultural history of the twentieth century, chronicling black entertainment from its beginnings and the birth of popular culture as we know it. In Black and White transcends simple biography to become an important record, both celebratory and elegiacal, of a vanished America and its greatest entertainer.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not A Definitive Biography.......2007-05-18

Maybe the definitive biography of Sammy Davis Jr. can never be written. Or maybe it simply hasn't been done. This book is a mixed bag.

The book filters the story of Sammy Davis Jr. through race, everything is either black or white. As a result, you do get some interesting concepts, that Davis did not want to "be" black, as if all blacks (or for that matter, all whites) had something in common.

You do get extensive thoughts about his love for blonde women, and his affairs with Kim Novak is given a prominent amount of space.

You also have a wonderful portrait of Will Mastin, a man who is ignored in every other book about Davis.

But other things are glossed over, his drug and alcohol abuse, his Rat Pack days, even his marriage to May Britt.

Oh, do not expect anything about his music in here, absolutely nothing about any of his records.

5 out of 5 stars A Biography filled with Historical Landscapes.......2007-05-09

A must read! Wil Haygood's book, In Black and White, The Life of Sammy Davis, Jr. not only captures the mesmerizing and oftentimes daunting physical movement of the man- Sammy- in the seemingly separate worlds of black and white but unapologetically captivates the reader with Sammy's human quest for love and approval.

The author skillfully provides the reader with a historical landscape to navigate the multidimensional aspects of the making of "Sammy" from his vaudeville childhood days to the inscription on the headstone of his final resting place--
Sammy Davis Jr. "The Entertainer" He Did It All...and indeed he did.

After reading the book, I can't wait to see Sammy "in living color" thanks to Denzel Washington's insight to purchase the screen rights.

Written by Deleso Alford Washington, J.D., LL.M.

1 out of 5 stars Not the real story..........2007-02-03

This book does not reflect the spirit of the life of Sammy Davis, Jr. I'm afraid that it relects the spirit of the life that the author, Wil Haygood, unfortunately must have led.

I am very familiar with the details of Sam's life, I have heard it in his own words. Sam was a very pragmatic optimist who imagined the world in a very color-blind way. This is where Mr. Haygood leads the un-informed reader very far away from Sam's actual beliefs.

Sam didn't want to be white, he wanted to be the best. That is what he constantly strived for. Sam stood up to racism so many times, in so many ways. How many times was his nose broken in race baited fights from his hitch in the Army ? Sam experienced the ignorance of racism many, many times, from many different people. But for every racist he had to battle, he also saw many more people who he loved, trusted & repected, and who he knew felt the same way towards him.

Almost all of the material in this book is 'lifted' from the books co-written by Sam and Jane & Burt Boyar. These works are the true story. These people were there when these events happened, they witnessed them first hand. Not only has Mr. Haygood taken what actually transpired and twisted it to fit his agenda, he berates the people who daily lived through these experiences with Sam.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2005-11-06

This is well written, thorough, entertaining, and really a superb history lesson. Great Job Mr. Haygood.

Wil Haywood, staff writer for the Washington Post, won the 2004 Hurston-Wright Legacy Award in Nonfiction, plus a host of other awards for In Black And White: The Life Of Sammy Davis Jr., so it's only fitting his impressive and entertaining biography of the life of Sammy Davis Jr. be reprinted in paperback to reach new generations of audiences with his award-winning life of one of America's most popular and versatile performers and entertainers of the 20th Century.

Denzel Washington is certainly one of the finest actors working today, having earned an Academy Award nomination as Stephen Biko in Cry Freedom and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the Civil War action/drama Glory. But perhaps his greatest contribution to American cinema is something he has done better than any other African American actor before him--transcend racial lines. As Douglas Brode, author of Denzel Washington: His Films and Career states, "Denzel has always insisted, in his personal life, that he wants to be treated in a color-blind manner, while professionally he has always been on the lookout for just such film roles."

The best moments here are the revelations regarding Washington's film choices, including how he turned down a role in Oliver Stone's Platoon because, he said, he didn't just want to play "one of the black characters" who either "cleaned toilets" or "left before the fighting started." Instead, he pitched himself to Stone as one of the lead characters, the part eventually portrayed by Willem Dafoe. He has since gotten his chance at starring roles many times over, often with impressive results. This biography and film history chronicles Washington's film career admirably up through the 1996 drama Courage Under Fire, complete with 24 pages of photographs. --Walt Opie

3 out of 5 stars Denzel Washington: His Films and . . . His Films??!.......1998-09-03

If you are looking for a definitive, "traditional" biography of Denzel Washington, this book is definately not it. Author Douglas Brode (who, it should be noted, is a well-respected writer of film and television personas) offers the reader a biographical filmography of sorts, which appeals more to film wonks and students of cinema than it does to the average Denzel fan. Strictly speaking, Brode just doesn't reveal exactly who Denzel Washington is off-screen; indeed, the first chapter, "Deconstructing Denzel," is as close as the reader gets to finding out about Denzel's past (included are brief mentionings of his youth, his pre-acting days and his time at Fordham University, where he got his first taste of "serious" acting). The rest of the book takes the film-by-film approach to Washington's career, squeezing Denzel's personal life into the extra spaces of the context in which each film is discussed. This approach becomes problematic -- and frustrating -- as the reader never really is able to fully recontstruct Denzel after the book's intro, a fact that further enhances the charismatic performer's notoriously [and ironically] enigmatic and aloof off-screen persona (anyone who's read or seen an interview of Washington knows exactly what I mean). The book, however, shines in its extensive analysis of Washington's films from a critical standpoint and enables the reader to be privy to "behind-the-scenes" information on all of his films, from the forgettable "Carbon Copy" (1981) to "Courage Under Fire" (1996), while adding an impressive technical insight not found in many mainstream bios of "celebrities." That said, it is regrettable that there is little mention of Denzel's non-cinematic successes and failures; I would have liked to have read more on his "St. Elsewhere" days as well as his early struggles as an actor on the New York theater scene. I also would have enjoyed more information on his family, particularly his wife, Pauletta, an accomplished artist (pianist, actress, songstress) in her own right. Make no mistake: despite its numerous flaws, the book is a valuable resource for Denzel fans and is especially good as a reference to supplement one's viewing experience after watching any one of Washington's powerful performances (excluding the one in the aforementioned "Carbon Copy") that prove why he remains such a widely admired [and coveted] "A-list"-actor.

This is a really fun video for any age. Denzel Washington's Caribbean accent and UB 40's funky music are real treats, and the cartoons are cool. This video even managed to capture our oh-so-cool and very hard to please seventh-graders! I heard plenty of "yah mahn's" around the halls in school afterwards. Enjoy this video of the clever teeny-weeny spider who tricks both the longest and the strongest animal in the jungle!
