great book for modern work envronment.......2001-03-31
In the past I had some concerns about work dynamics and why projects would keep failing, this book gave me amazing insights to the processes involved in team dymamics causing me to refocus my erergies, work style and accomplish better results in less time. Better than going to dilbert for figuring it out. They know how to make it work, read it. Its an important book for anyone who must particpate in elegate or be a part of the team structure environment that is cornerstione to the american work place. I think all managers and program managers who dont really owe to themselves to understand this concept to. Put it under the categorie on frequent read list of why companies fail. Alot do, but mostly wihthout a lot of people workign very hard to ensure they dont before hand. Buy the book.

Book Description
In the nearly two centuries since the first building¹s completion in Thomas Jefferson¹s academical village, programs and facilities at the University of Virginia have been continually expanded and updated. The four years since the first publication of The University of Virginia: A Pictorial History have been no exception to that tradition: science and technology, athletics, public service, international programs, business, and the arts are just a few of the current growth areas at Mr. Jefferson¹s university.
When the Board of Visitors approved a new master plan for growth and development in 1999--and the capital campaign of 2000 supported its ambitious outline with a $1.4 billion purse--they set in motion massive upgrades at the university. A South Lawn complex and ³groundswalk² to reconnect the sprawling areas of the university, a new special collections library, expanded athletic facilities, and an innovative performing and visual arts precinct will support the many programs the university is pursuing to remain competitive among peer institutions. A rich compendium of the history, people, places, and traditions of the University of Virginia, this generously illustrated narrative provides the next-best experience to actually being on grounds. Detailing programs and construction already under way, as well as previewing anticipated initiatives, Susan Tyler Hitchcock¹s all-new section for this updated Pictorial History ensures that the book accurately reflects the ever-evolving nature of its subject. And Jefferson himself couldn¹t help but be pleased by ³a plan so broad and liberal and modern² as that.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book.......2007-01-19
The book describes the rich history of University of Virginia in a chronological order. The illustrations are wonderful. It always enables me to relive my fond memories of UVA. The way it describes Thomas Jefferson's vision 'bout UVA is bound to inspire any UVA graduate. I hope it is updated to reflect the recent developments and accomplishments.
Book Description
If you want straight talk about direct mail fundraising, do what the title says: open this book immediately.
In it you'll find 81 brief chapters examining virtually every topic of importance to those who raise money by mail.
Unlike other books that over-complicate the subject, Open Immediately!, by Stephen Hitchcock, does just the opposite. It offers an elegantly simple and inviting approach to direct mail by focusing on one element at a time. (This approach has the added benefit of making it easy to find the exact help you need.)
The book is divided into six major parts:
Essentials of Direct Mail Fundraising Acquiring and Renewing Donors Targeting Your Mailings Writing Effective Letters Key Components of Your Appeal, and How to Ask
Within each part, Hitchcock offers specific suggestions with just enough detail to allow you to implement his advice. Take the section, `How to Ask.' Among the topics discussed are: ways of asking for the gift, why it's important to ask for the gift at least twice, when not to ask for a specific gift, how to increase the first gift (the key one as it dictates the size of future gifts), how to raise $1,000 gifts by mail, and how to ask for monthly gifts and charitable bequests. And that's just a sampling.
Or take the section, `Key Components of Your Appeal.' The 16 topics Hitchcock explores in these pages include a discussion of obsolete (and offensive) techniques, the cardinal rules of envelope copy, the misunderstood role of inserts, the use of multiple signatures, how to contain your costs, even a look at URGENT telegrams and whether they work.
With its clear-eyed realistic focus, there's no other book on direct mail fundraising quite like Open Immediately!.
Hitchcock knows that your time is limited. He realizes too that you're not going to overturn your current program. But what you can do, he understands, is tweak your efforts to be more profitable. And, Open Immediately! offers dozens and dozens of ways to do just this.
Customer Reviews:
Direct Mail for the Rest of Us.......2007-01-23
Major charities can hire Stephen Hitchcock's firm (he's president of Mal Warwick and Associates, one of the best in the world) and benefit from his expertise. For the rest of us struggling to succeed with fundraising direct mail, there's Mr. Hitchcock's straight talking book, a soup-to-nuts immersion in everything from writing, to list selection, to loyalty building. He sheds light on perennial concerns such as "soliciting too often," "guidelines for effective tests," and "raising money on the Internet." There are ah-ha moments on almost every page, too. Did you know, for instance, that "very, very few donors upgrade their giving. The first gift you receive from an individual is likely to be the amount written on subsequent checks." This book taught me dozens of useful things I'd never have guessed, the gold standard for a good how-to book. It deserves a spot on every fundraiser's reference shelf.
Easy-to-Read Practical Advice and Knowledge.......2004-12-09
This is a good book. It's easy to read, speaks directly to the reader, and makes excellent points about how -- and how not to -- do direct mail fund raising. I'm not an expert on direct mail, but I've done it before. Hitchcock's advice is right on target and easy to explain to non-development staff, board members, and volunteers.
Hitchcock is President of Mal Warwick and Associates. This firm does a lot of fund raising consulting, and Mal Warwick is well-known for his many books on nonprofit fundraising. In fact, "Ten Steps to Fundraising Success" was co-written by Messrs. Warwick and Hitchcock.
The book is organized around six key themes (see list below), and the 83 "chapters" are very short (often 3-4 pages each) ideas relating to the theme. These ideas often include concrete advice, checklists, and lists of numbered tips that make the advice easy to follow.
Much of the advice and knowledge is deceptively simple -- we feel we should know this, but often we don't act as through we do. For example, the book instructs on how to keep an appeal simple, direct, informal, and free of verbal or physical clutter. Did you know that including your nonprofit's brochure in a fundraising mailing actually decreases donor response? Did you know that cramming a lot of words, no matter how well-written, on a single page to save a little printing and postage money actually costs your organization far more in lost donations?
Reading this book has helped me in my consultation work with clients, in my work as a volunteer trustee of a national foundation, and as a consumer and citizen evaluating the direct mail appeals I receive all the time. Stephen Hitchcock is generous in writing a book that allows the rest of us to feel we're as savvy about direct mail fundraising as he has become through years of experience.

Book Description
"This book is a fine resource for every doctor, patient, and family who has to confront the reality of breast cancer."
—Bernie S. Siegel, M.D., Author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles
Attitudes about breast cancer diagnosis are changing, and women and their families are becoming more assertive about managing their disease. They know that more choices are available now than ever before, and they are willing to make them.
This book encourages you to take control. Cathy Hitchcock and Steve Austin, N.D., have written a book for women who are ready to actively participate in their diagnosis and treatment.
A husband and wife team, Hitchcock and Austin walk you step-by-step through each part of diagnosis, treatment (both conventional and alternative), and prevention (including prevention of a recurrence). With the help of a flow chart, they examine different diagnosis options. They also suggest questions to ask your doctor and offer checklists, summaries, and overviews.
Interwoven with all this information, Cathy shares her personal story as a breast cancer survivor. She describes her ordeal upon discovering the lump and the transitions she has gone through to live with the diagnosis in a life-affirming way. Unlike many other breast cancer patients, Cathy didn’t simply accept the choices offered by medical doctors. Instead, with the help of her husband, she studied the research and made her own decisions about conventional and alternative treatments.
Customer Reviews:
We ARE free to think and decide.......2004-02-09
Of the books I read when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, this was the one that seemed most objective. It was also most challenging to blind acceptance of what the medical establishment might have us believe. Cancer treatment is NOT a black-and-white process, and this book shows why. Patients have the right and responsibility to participate in decisions about their health care, and this book gives information to help in the decision-making process. I very much hope that Steve and Cathy will soon publish an update, as the statistics, surgical options, drug regimens, etc have changed dramatically since 1994. Notably absent is mention of DIEP flap breast reconstruction. Nonetheless, this book will never be totally irrelevant, since the process of acquiring knowledge, and the concept that we ARE free to choose our health care, are timeless and liberating.
The ultimate breast cancer reference, naturally.......2003-12-03
As a naturopathic physician, I have never seen any book on any type of cancer as well thought out and executed as this. What a fantastic resource. I have found answers to questions I've had about this disease over and over again. I can only hope that they'll do a 2nd edition to update the research.
A very good book giving you all the facts for treatments ........1998-01-11
The husband and wife team give an excellent view of he treatments and follow up of what to do after treatment. He is the doctor who does the research. She is the person with breast cancer and her choices, and why she chose as she did. And what she is doing now to try and prevent a reoccurence.

Presumptuous But Good.......2005-08-18
How can any little book presume to be 'complete' when it comes to Alfred Hitchcock?
He practically invented a cinematic language, used his commercial success to at once deflate pretense in others and experiment most boldly with cinematic form, and, in the process, scared the pants off us.
What is complete in this book? Each film is given its own section, which concludes with a "Final Analysis" section. Here's a quick cut from the final "Final Analysis" [Family Plot]:
"Hitch's last project was the most important one he ever undertook, for trying to get this spy story to the screen allowed him to entertain the fantasy that he was both still working and well enough to work, despite evidence to the contrary."
Complete? Even in the last sentence, the authors admit that death cut off what could have been even more from a great twentieth century artist.
Completely Wonderful.......2002-07-16
I see that the other reviewers have pretty much said all there needs to be said about this book and I doubt I will say anything new here. All I want to emphasize it that this is truly THE book to get for a quick, easy, complete understanding of Alfred Hitchcock's movies. I have read other, longer, deeper books on his films which were very good, yet this one is nice when you are new to Hitchcock or just do not have the time to devote to much reading. These authors have a good sense of humor as well, and it always is fun to read a book where you can get a few laughs. They have some good trivia in the book, spotlights on certain Hitchcock actors,a few pages of pictures showing some poster art and movie stills, and they tell you where to find Hitch in the movies where he had cameo appearances. Hitchcock's movies are among my favorites, and this book is among my favorites about them. Get it and read it, you won't be disappointed.
I am impressed :).......2001-12-30
After having read this book from stem to stern I would recommend it to new Hitchcock fans and more experienced fans alike. For the new fan it offers a clear synopsis of each film as well as offering many interesting points to look for. For the more experienced it makes for a convenient "turn to" source so as to better avoid the mountains of heavy, sometimes overly self satisfied observations that many resources tend to become, thereby saving wading through chapter upon chapter in order to reach simple facts.
I must respect the authors for their understanding that an enjoyment of film does not require a degree. I always commend a person for having the ability to transfer complicated observations in the simplest of English without the use of parables and without patronizing tones. Paul Condon and Jim Sangster have managed just that and not without the occasional bit of side splitting humour. Even if you are not watching the films in question it is more than a worthy read. That said, it may help to be familiar with some English terms such as "send up" as the average American does not know what it means to send something up so may be left wondering.
However, with the authors sardonic senses of humour being clear I would have liked to have seen further elaboration of the "goofs" section. There are so many Hitchcock bloopers worthy of a mention. I am certain it was a deliberate omission (perhaps for the next book) but nonetheless I was left wishing that they had made note of the obvious ones if only to give the new viewer that added bit of fun and sport.
Despite taking umbrage at the use of the phrase "just a smathering of dull brunettes" ahum, I would gladly purchase any other offerings from either or both authors and very much look forward to a second volume of "Complete Hitchcock," contradiction that it may be. Hopefully with an eye to the slip ups and perhaps more production details (locations, circumstances, first hand anecdotes, etc.) If that isn't a hint to get writing I don't know what is : )
In short I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would not only recommend it but have already bought several other copies for friends and family. Enjoy.
Complete in every way.......2001-11-20
As a novice Hitchcock fan, I find this book extremely informative. It gives a good summary of all of Hitchcock's movies as well as a good analysis of the films. It also includes where Hitchcock can be spotted in the movies and little tidbits on the actors and actresses who were casted in his movies as well as behind the scenes information. I would recommend this book for those who are starting to discover Hitchcock.
A great place to start.......2000-04-21
I bought this book sight-unseen, knowing absolutely nothing about it (which is why I'm now writing this review; maybe you'll be more willing to try it once you know what it has to offer). It's a thorough, well-nigh encyclopedic look at Hitch's work, with a brief chapter (averaging about 4 pages) on each major film. The chapters include complete cast and credits --including "uncredited cast" -- plus a synopsis, and sundry comments on each film under such headings as "cruelty to
animals," "mysogyny," "ice maidens," "roots," and a "final word" with a critical appraisal including a rating on a scale of 1-10. While examination of each film is necessarily brief, it's quite thorough and absolutely chock-full of cool trivia. Every now and then there are sidebars on stars with whom Hitch worked; there's also an amazing appendix listing every single episode from Hitch's TV shows (not just the ones he directed -- but ALL OF EM). Only negatives: could use an INDEX, plus I noticed several careless spelling errors (actors' names and so forth) of the type that tend to make one a bit suspicious. On the whole, however, this is THE place to start for the Hitchcock novice, and a real treasure trove for the seasoned fan like me. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Hitchcock at Work is a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes examination of the work of 'The Master of Suspense', Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980).Film expert Bill Krohn looks beyond the usual anecdotal sources about Hitchcock, paying unprecedented attention to the director's personal papers and the archives of the film studios he worked for. The result is a major reassessment of the working methods of the director, one which explores many of the myths - often promulgated by Hitchcock himself - that have warped previous criticism. Hitchcock at Work is fully illustrated with film stills, shots taken on set, storyboards and annotated film scripts. There is also a complete filmography.'Of all the books on the Master, Bill Krohn's is quite the most splendid and involving. Given the kind of breathtaking visual treatment that is the hallmark of the publisher Phaidon, keen and penetrating text is matched by images that do full justice to the remarkable pictorial qualities of Hitchcock's films. Absolutely essential.' (News International Genre Hotline)'The most useful book I've read recently about Alfred Hitchcock + I bought it last year, at first sight mainly for the pictures - rare, unusual and immaculately reproduced in colour and monochrome - and then found it telling me more than I had ever known about the behind-the-scenes Hitch + a real contribution to primary scholarship.' (Alexander Walker, Evening Standard)
Customer Reviews:
SO FAR SO GOOD..........2006-03-13
I haven't quite finished the entire book, however, what I have read and seen is excellent...If you are HITCHCOCK MOVIE FAN, this is a MUST-HAVE book...Lot's of photos on all of his movies, great chronological lay out and for the DIRECTORS OUT THERE [like me] great info on his approaches to each film given the constraints he faced from studios, product codes and others...I love behind the scene shots on movie sets...and this one has it's share...Can't wait to read more and finish it in detail...
The most astute (non-interview) book on Hitchcock's films.......2003-09-07
After the Truffaut interview book called 'Hitchcock', this is the one that is best informed, and most insightful, about Hitchcock's involvement in the art and craft of his films.
Bill Krohn has gone on from here lately with a superb article - based again on meticulous research in the Hitchcock files - about the scripting, production, and post-production of SUSPICION. (See the 'Hitchcock Annual', 2002-03 edition.)
I highly recommend 'Hitchcock at Work'.
An essential book about a great director.......2003-07-24
In essence, this is a book intended to demythologize Alfred Hitchcock. It has long been a staple of criticism on Hitchcock's films to buy into his assertions that he made his films in his head, via screenplays and storyboards, prior to production, and that the production itself was largely irrelevant. This claim, amazingly, has gone largely uncontested until Krohn's book comes along and shatters it to pieces. One would expect that that sort of demythologization would result in a feeling that Hitchcock's films were, somehow, less great than we felt them to be before, but that is anything but the case. If anything, Krohn's work reaffirms Hitchcock's status as one of the all-time great filmmakers.
A previous reviewer criticized Krohn's book for giving some films more attention than others. Why carp? What's here is great, and it is reasonable to assume that Hitchcock improvised more on some sets than he did on others, and that the sort of documentation one needs to do the necessary research was more in abundance for some films than for others. Therefore, it is unfair to expect a film-by-film rundown. What we should focus on is what IS in the book, not what isn't, and what's here is amongst the most important work ever done on Hitchcock's films.
If you are a fan of Hitchcock's, and enjoy reading about his films as well as watching them, then you owe it to yourself to own this book.
Lavishly illustrated, but not without its flaws.......2001-07-21
First and foremost it should be noted that "Hitchcock At Work" suffers greatly from an imbalance in coverage of the director's titles. For a major work such as "North by Northwest", author Bill Krohn devotes 13 pages, and to a significantly lesser work, like "Saboteur", he allows 16 pages. This initial imbalance held promise. Was someone finally going to give attention to some of Hitchcock's films that for years have been overlooked? If that was the author's intent, it was quickly rejected, for many of the less appreciated films which would have been interesting to read about, such as "Frenzy", "The Wrong Man", "Torn Curtain", "I Confess", "Under Capricorn", and others, receive a scant two pages each! (As another reviewer noted, the British Period is almost completely ignored - but most books on Hitchcock are guilty of that.)
Some major works, like "Rebecca", are also glossed over in a couple of pages (as are all the films Hitchcock made for producer David Selznick, which is surprising, since the author makes a case for Hitchcock adopting a number of his pre-planning methods from Selznick himself). Even "Suspicion", which had such trouble over its ending that at different times it was rewritten, reshot, and even edited all over again, warranted only two boring stills, and four brief paragraphs.
The publisher, Phaidon, has put together a respectable volume, as they usually do (their "The American Art Book" is a fine example). Many of the illustrations have been published in other volumes on Hitchcock, but a majority of them are fresh and interesting. The frame enlargements from the actual films are often grainy or blurry, as they were meant to be projected at 24 frames per second, not printed in an expensive coffee table book. For the hefty price tag, one would expect the definitive edition on Alfred Hitchcock. This definitely isn't it.
Pretty good.......2001-01-01
I now like Rhomer/Chabrol's "Hitchcock: the first forty-four films" better.

For Pure Information Only.......2004-06-23
(spoilers)
If you're looking for pure facts about Hitchcock, this book's got it. It's got everything from a bio on all of Hitch's actors to the name of the shower scene double. However, Howard Maxford lets his opinions get over his information way too often, and as you'd expect, they're not very well informed. For instance, in his review / information on Vertigo (in which he gives the film two out of four stars), he states that there is a plot hole about Scotty not going down to see Madeline's dead body. Yet just a scene after this happens, Scotty's former boss states that Scotty drove home, not stopping to look at the fallen woman. Pretty simple, huh? That's just one of a few uninformed opinions on some of Hitch's films. He also has the bland, film-school statements like, "The main character has no rooting value," or "too much empty space."
In conclusion, Hitchcock A-Z would have been perfect with just the facts. The facts are there, but they're often marred by silly things like the ones above.

Talk about your special interest reference works; The New Grove Dictionary of American Music qualifies with a vengeance. This set, in four hefty volumes, is not one of those that no home should be without. But if your interests run strongly toward American music, you'll find it useful, interesting, and informative. Note that "American music" in this context is not strictly of the sort commonly known as "classical"; the editors have included folk, jazz, popular, and performance art. (One set of opposing pages in Volume 1, chosen at random, offers details on the disparate likes of Luciano Berio--concentrating on his American years--the city of Berkeley, Busby Berkeley, Berklee College, the Berkshire Music Center, and Irving Berlin.) It makes the books useful for the writer or academic, and they're also fun to riffle through at random. One caveat: the set is now more than a decade old, and anyone whose interest lies strictly in the 1990s should turn elsewhere for information.
Book Description
The New Grove Dictionary of American Music is the most comprehensive and enlightening history of America's musical heritage ever published.
American Grove is focused solely on the unique styles and traditions of American music. It covers popular musical forms such as country, rock, pop, soul, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and big band. It explores America's vibrant classical heritage--from colonial times to John Cage--and also provides
substantial articles on the traditional music of diverse cultures such as Native Americans, Jewish Americans, and Islamic Americans.
The Dictionary investigates the social, cultural, and historical forces that shaped our distinctive musical identity--from the Civil War to the impact of pop culture...the rise of technology to the plurality of religions...from the supremacy of film to the evolution of the civil rights movement.
The New Grove Dictionary of American Music includes:

Entries on American cities as diverse as Miami, New Orleans, Nashville, Los Angeles, and Anchorage
