Not just the Power of Positive Thinking.......2007-10-05
I enjoyed and am still enjoying this book. I reread passages often. This is not just about the Power of Positive Thinking to get what you want specifically. It is a philosophy. Think good thoughts; review your daily events before you sleep; turn around negative events; give thanks for what you do have. People who abide by those ideas will automatically develop a more positive outlook which in turn makes people around them feel better. Like when you're on the road and someone wants to get in front of you, if you wave and let them go, you usually see someone behind you taking up the chain to do the same thing. It's contagious and right-thinking. An EXCELLENT book with great thoughts of many contemporary philosophers and motivational speakers.
Career Training Enhancer.......2007-10-04
Many lives by it. Millions are reading it. The latest self help book claims we can change our lives by thinking. But this 'new thought' may just be another new version of NLP and the power of the subconscious. No matter what, it doesn't hurt to read and apply since all of it is positive. Gave many of it as gifts and even recommending it for my meirc trainees in dubai.
The Only Self Help Book You Will Ever Need.......2007-10-03
I can see why some people wouldn't like this book. Rhonda Byrnes and the other contributers present the ideas so simply that its hard to swallow at first. You think it should be more complicated. But if you can get past that the ideas here are really true. Even more importantly, this is a self help book that really helps. Most books like this leave you feeling okay or hopeful after reading them but this is one you can actually test right after you read it. I did test it and I have already seen results. I know it sounds crazy but it works. Why fight it?
The Secret.......2007-10-03
This book is a sad, desperate philosophy of life- at best. At worst, it is a bizarre way of thinking about the world which leads to feelings of guilt and inadequacy for self and lack of compassion for others.
I know a woman, still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, who devotes herself to the Laws of Attraction and believes she attracted it into her life. How sad! And how arrogant! I am confident that not all victims of Katrina would agree that they "attracted" a natural disaster to themselves. And I don't believe the woman practicing 'the secret' is more powerful than the cumulative total of the other victims- who did NOT attract a hurricane into their lives!
Few people would dispute the idea that healthy attitudes are a classy and beneficial thing. But to say that we all attract that which we have is ridiculous. So the cancer patient and mother of a murdered child should have paid more attention to what they were attracting to themselves so that they wouldn't be dealing with their hardship now? Wow. Who wants to associate with these idiots? Forget The Secret. Don't make these hucksters any richer. Buy instead Barbara Sher's books on how to find success with supportive people. And if you have a good attitude and still got hit with some of life's hard curve balls, don't spend a moment feeling inadequate because you didn't do "the secret" right! Read instead When Good Things Happen to Bad People, by a very kind, much wiser person. Who, by the way is also wealthy and happy.
Old News to Many, but a Well-Packaged Piece. Has a Generous Following........2007-10-03
I remember watching this movie with my progressive university campus church and feeling almost bored out of my mind. This movie seemed to be telling me many things I've already heard. Or, DID I hear them? You, see, the only reason why the information came across as quite basic and trite to me is because I've already been living out its principles in my daily life, sometimes unknowingly. I don't remember exactly where I got them from. Maybe I knew them all along or had them as a part of my inner being. I have used "the secret" as revealed in this film (no, I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it) and it does indeed work, but I found that it was nothing to be amazed about.
What felt weirdest to me was that people were utterly crazed about this film. I could tell that they were be honest about it being eye-opening. I kind of found myself laughing inside, but then wiped the smirk off of my face when I realized that such just meant that I had been very fortunate in life to discover the tiny bits of wisdom talked about in this film and such may have not been so "obvious" to everyone.
My rating is not on the content of the "secret" contained in this film itself, as it would be unfair to judge this film in such light, considering that I already knew and had been introduced to much of what it had to offer. Rather, I give it three stars for the packaging and delivery of the message. The film is effective and certainly makes use of several notable experts. It's colorful and will keep people tuned in. It appeals to a broad audience and isn't too preachy.
The film could have been a little shorter, as the message is a bit redundant, but I'm sure if it had been then people would complain that it's "too short". I don't think it's fair to rate this film with one star, because it wasn't "horrible" and a "total waste" of minutes from my life. But, I also don't think this film is "ground-breaking" or worthy enough for a four- or five-star rating. Three stars sounds about right.

Sit at the foot of a native elder and listen as great wisdom of days long past is passed down. In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. It's the how and why one should do these things that make The Four Agreements worth reading and remembering. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
In The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting agreements that rob people of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, the Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform anyone's life to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love. These agreements are deceptively simple: Be impeccable with your word (speak with integrity; say only what you mean); Don't take anything personally (nothing others do is because of you); Don't make assumptions (find the courage to ask questions and express what you really want); Always do your best (and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret). Peter Coyote's resonant reading emphasizes the power in these remarkable tenets.

A good foundation.......2007-10-01
This is a compelling book that provides a straightforward, easy-to-understand methodology for improving one's quality of life. In this work Ruiz first reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that tend to rob people of joy and create needless suffering. He then recommends a technique for overcoming these beliefs: adopt four new agreements with respect to how they approach the world and conduct their lives.
Is this some new, revolutionary technology for self-improvement? No, the fact is in one way shape or form we've all heard these types of admonitions from other sources in our lives. What Ruiz does well is package them in a novel way and provide practical insights into how we can best apply them. Bottom line, even if you've heard something like this before it never hurts to be reminded about good advice you've received in the past.
PLEASE... Read the 1 star reviews BEFORE you buy this book!.......2007-09-27
I am shocked at all the 5 stars and positive press this book has received. PLEASE, read a few of the 1 star reviews before you purchase this book. Quite often people who rate something with just 1 star are grumpy individuals who just want to argue... not this time. Many writers of the single star reviews are extremely well spoken, very well read and positive minded individuals. They are worth reading! (More so than this book.)
Everyone on this Planet should read this book, it should be a teaching material in Schools.......2007-09-25
The four agreements is not only a book, it is a lifestyle. Most of the wisdom in self helping books i have read thruout the years has mostly washed away, vanished in to the sea of mind few weeks later after i read them. This one is different. It has somekind of power. And it forces you to do the doings not just read about them. This one stayes with you cause you wan't to pick it up over and over again.
Critical information, so powerful it should be taught 7- 12 + college.......2007-09-24
I did not receive any critical information about my role in relationships from any source including school, religious education, parents, or advisor's.
The Four Agreements and the Mastery of Love has now provided this knowledge and it is and will always be a reference source for living the rest of my life
It is so ingrained and with me every day as I work to improve on my relationships with my family, friends, and business relationships. After you listen to the message of the Four Agreements, you will see the need for this information to be made available to your family and friends.
My wish is for this to be a part of the curriculum for the public school systems.

Easy to read, let's see how easy in practise.......2007-09-18
I think we've all seen this stuff before in various incarnations (e.g. Bible - "Do unto others...") but it is a very easy read and the agreements are plain and unambiguous. They are not cluttered with ceremony but come down to principles of values and self context. And like alot of similar readings, the battle or challenge lies in the effort to achieve and not only the achievement itself. I like that it advocates largely a position or development of an inner strength that is personal. All too often, I have noticed some of these personal freedom type writings from authors who present their writings in a stadium type environment and whip the crowd up in a frenzy to create a mob frenzy that attempts to portray the message. That's clearly the domain of some charlatans that we've all seen. I'm looking forward to the challenge involved in implementing these agreements. It won't be easy but most thnigs worthwhile aren't so they say.

I have probably referenced this book more in my training seminars and speaking engagements than any other book I have ever read. I just love it! (I gave everyone in my family a copy for Christmas) The author states that 99 out of 100 people report that they would like to be surrounded by more positive people. "And the church said; AMEN!" This short, interesting, and succinct read teaches the reader how to become one of those "more positive people." A must read about positive psychology for anyone who has to be around negative people in our negative world. I think that pretty much includes all of us, doesn't it?

How Full is Your Bucket?.......2007-07-29
The book assigns theoretic valuations to philosophic concepts.
For instance, a full bucket has a net positive outlook + Energy
from every drop of strength expended. Relentless negativity leads to
death. The North Koreans broke down peer cohesiveness by insisting
that captors confess their transgressions publicly.
The author believes that regular praise= increased productivity,
tenure, loyalty and satisfaction. People leave when they aren't
appreciated sufficiently. Bad bosses increase stroke risk.
Activiely disengaged employees cost employers upward of $50B a
year or more. A strength of the book is that the authors attempt
to quantify universal concepts within practical contexts of
everyday life. To a considerable extent, the authors succeed.
Excellent.......2007-07-27

Do you know what makes you happy? Daniel Gilbert would bet that you think you do, but you are most likely wrong. In his witty and engaging new book, Harvard professor Gilbert reveals his take on how our minds work, and how the limitations of our imaginations may be getting in the way of our ability to know what happiness is. Sound quirky and interesting? It is! But just to be sure, we asked bestselling author (and master of the quirky and interesting) Malcolm Gladwell to read Stumbling on Happiness, and give us his take. Check out his review below. --Daphne Durham
Guest Reviewer: Malcolm Gladwell
Malcolm Gladwell is the author of bestselling books Blink and The Tipping Point, and is a staff writer for The New Yorker.
Several years ago, on a flight from New York to California, I had the good fortune to sit next to a psychologist named Dan Gilbert. He had a shiny bald head, an irrepressible good humor, and we talked (or, more accurately, he talked) from at least the Hudson to the Rockies--and I was completely charmed. He had the wonderful quality many academics have--which is that he was interested in the kinds of questions that all of us care about but never have the time or opportunity to explore. He had also had a quality that is rare among academics. He had the ability to translate his work for people who were outside his world.
Now Gilbert has written a book about his psychological research. It is called Stumbling on Happiness, and reading it reminded me of that plane ride long ago. It is a delight to read. Gilbert is charming and funny and has a rare gift for making very complicated ideas come alive.
Stumbling on Happiness is a book about a very simple but powerful idea. What distinguishes us as human beings from other animals is our ability to predict the future--or rather, our interest in predicting the future. We spend a great deal of our waking life imagining what it would be like to be this way or that way, or to do this or that, or taste or buy or experience some state or feeling or thing. We do that for good reasons: it is what allows us to shape our life. And it is by trying to exert some control over our futures that we attempt to be happy. But by any objective measure, we are really bad at that predictive function. We're terrible at knowing how we will feel a day or a month or year from now, and even worse at knowing what will and will not bring us that cherished happiness. Gilbert sets out to figure what that's so: why we are so terrible at something that would seem to be so extraordinarily important?
In making his case, Gilbert walks us through a series of fascinating--and in some ways troubling--facts about the way our minds work. In particular, Gilbert is interested in delineating the shortcomings of imagination. We're far too accepting of the conclusions of our imaginations. Our imaginations aren't particularly imaginative. Our imaginations are really bad at telling us how we will think when the future finally comes. And our personal experiences aren't nearly as good at correcting these errors as we might think.
I suppose that I really should go on at this point, and talk in more detail about what Gilbert means by that--and how his argument unfolds. But I feel like that might ruin the experience of reading Stumbling on Happiness. This is a psychological detective story about one of the great mysteries of our lives. If you have even the slightest curiosity about the human condition, you ought to read it. Trust me. --Malcolm Gladwell
Book Description
• Why are lovers quicker to forgive their partners for infidelity than for leaving dirty dishes in the sink?
• Why will sighted people pay more to avoid going blind than blind people will pay to regain their sight?
• Why do dining companions insist on ordering different meals instead of getting what they really want?
• Why do pigeons seem to have such excellent aim; why can’t we remember one song while listening to another; and why does the line at the grocery store always slow down the moment we join it?
In this brilliant, witty, and accessible book, renowned Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert describes the foibles of imagination and illusions of foresight that cause each of us to misconceive our tomorrows and misestimate our satisfactions. Vividly bringing to life the latest scientific research in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, and behavioral economics, Gilbert reveals what scientists have discovered about the uniquely human ability to imagine the future, and about our capacity to predict how much we will like it when we get there. With penetrating insight and sparkling prose, Gilbert explains why we seem to know so little about the hearts and minds of the people we are about to become.

The psychology, biology, science, and art of happiness..........2007-09-17
Consider two real life stories...one lives in misery, is unfairly accused of crime, and is hanged to death. The other is a wealth creator, builds a huge empire, generates huge economic output, and creates many jobs. Which life would you rather live? If you think you know, think again...and read this book!
It is about the psychology, biology, science, and art of happiness and the author has done an wonderful job developing his framework for understanding human happiness and assembling together the details in a style that is very easy to read, but does not trivialize the subject.
This Book Made Me Happy!.......2007-09-16
This is definitely one of the best books I have read this year (in this genre, anyway). Gilbert does a wonderful job of exploring the complexities of the human mind/brain, especially as it relates to imagination and decision-making. He points out a variety of `flaws' that affect our decision-making processes and offers his solution to our problem in the final chapter of the book. The book definitely got me thinking and made me laugh quite a lot - the author infuses quite a bit of humor into the book, which kept it from being too `preachy' or overly intellectual. I think the writing style - accessible, funny, and engaging - makes the book much more appealing. He uses a lot of real-world examples to make his points, and even manages to trick the reader a few times as well. I found myself really engaged by the material in the book, and looked forward to reading it each time. I wouldn't call this book or his ideas `pop psychology,' but the book will definitely appeal to those who are not looking for anything too challenging; Stumbling on Happiness illuminates a lot of errors in reasoning and is just a really interesting read. There were some points that I felt were flawed, or needed further explanation, so I'm hoping to join in an Amazon discussion about the book. A definite must-read if this genre is of interest to you.
Psychology of expectations.......2007-09-16
"Stumbling on happiness" is not as much about happiness, or how to acquire it, but about our cognitive processes that construct the expectation of happiness. Daniel Gilbert exposes a number of flaws in our reasoning: we tend to overestimate the positive impact, we rationalize bad outcomes, we err in our imaginations, and many more. The book is unlikely to change your life, but it is chock-full of interesting studies and trivia - becoming aware of common mistakes in our perception of happiness may well be half the battle towards achieving it.
Good topic but weak execution.......2007-09-06
This is an average book but with a good editor it could have been better. As has been pointed out by other reviewers, Gilbert beats simple to understand (and usually obvious and well known) concepts to death with recitation of the results of study after study. His humor, while initially refreshing, rapidly becomes grating.
While spending too much time on examples of the difficulty of predicting future happiness and remembering past happiness accurately, he gives short shrift to the broader, more philosophical, topics such as the degree that happiness is chemical/biological versus intellectual, why people generally revert to a standard level of happiness and, while the pursuit of happiness is frequently fruitless, what are the consequences of not engaging in that pursuit.
I also found the overreliance on studies of undergraduates to weaken the force of his arguments. While I understand why undergraduates are used so often in studies, they clearly represent a non-representative sample of the population. The tendency of people to act differently when they know they are being studied in situations that don't have the usual real world consequences (the Hawthorne Effect) and the contrived trivial nature of the rewards and punishments (some pizza, a certificate for ice cream, an electric shock) makes it harder to confidently draw broadly applicable conclusions.
The descriptions of the studies are very brief and so it's hard to know if his conclusions are valid or if different interpretations are possible. As an example, on page 118 he refers to a study where students would rather get $19 today than wait a day and get $20 tomorrow whereas they would rather take $20 365 days from now rather than $19 364 days from now. Gilbert says that is because tomorrow seems like a big difference from today whereas 365 days from now is not that different from 364 days and is an example of our inability to imagine the future well. A more rational explanation is that people want the $19 today rather than $20 tomorrow because (a) there's a default risk (perhaps you'll be sick tomorrow and I won't get the $20 at all) and (b) there's a transaction cost (is it worth the additional $1 for me to make the effort to come back tomorrow versus just getting my $19 now). Whereas in the 364 v. 365 day decision the default risk and transaction cost are essentially identical.
Probably worth reading if you've never been exposed to the topic but otherwise not worth it. Read the cognitive bias section of Wikipedia instead.
Well Worth Reading.......2007-09-05
This is indeed an academic review of the evidence that shows us how we can and cannot predict happiness. There are a lot of studies used as supporting evidence, but the writing is so fabulously witty that you don't get lost in the academia of it.
The book approaches underlying assumptions, but reveals new insights into how we humans operate. Like "Left Brain, Right Brain" it provides us understanding into how our minds work. It's not a let's-all-get-happy-and-here's-how manual. It's a look at how our minds trick us into believing things that may or may not lead us to happiness. The author does fairly show the most (statistically) accurate way to make such predictions - but nothing is 100 per cent.
I loved reading this book, even the subtle quips made the details enjoyable. I loved the insights provided and feel I won't rely so much on seeking absolute happiness, but rather relative happiness - because in the end that's all we can really know.
As the author states:
"As you will learn, the shortcoming that causes us to misremember the past and mispercieve the present is the very same shortcoming that causes us to mismanage the future."
Imagining future happiness is necessarily faulty, because imagination has three shortcomings:
1. Tendency to fill in and leave out without telling us.
2. Tendency to project the present onto the future.
3. Failure to recognize that things will look different once they happen - in particular, that bad things will look a whole lot better.
In a culture of overindulgence, Daniel Gilbert's message is much needed - happiness is about satiation, overindulgence is not at all about that.
"Wealth may be measured by counting dollars, but utility must be measured by counting how much goodness those dollars buy. Wealth doesn't matter, utility does. ...we care about the goodness or pleasure that these forms of weath may (or may not) induce. Wise choices are those that maximize our pleasure, not our dollars, and if we are to have any hope of choosing wisely, then we must correctly anticipate how much pleasure those dollars will buy us."
This is why we stumble. Mr. Gilbert helps us understand why we stumble. And in the process of writing about it, he distributes a fair share of happiness in turn through a very comforting writing style.

Book Description
Mindset is one of those rare books that can help you make positive changes in your life and at the same time see the world in a new way.
A leading expert in motivation and personality psychology, Carol Dweck has discovered in more than twenty years of research that our mindset is not a minor personality quirk: it creates our whole mental world. It explains how we become optimistic or pessimistic. It shapes our goals, our attitude toward work and relationships, and how we raise our kids, ultimately predicting whether or not we will fulfill our potential. Dweck has found that everyone has one of two basic mindsets.
If you have the fixed mindset, you believe that your talents and abilities are set in stone–either you have them or you don’t. You must prove yourself over and over, trying to look smart and talented at all costs. This is the path of stagnation. If you have a growth mindset, however, you know that talents can be developed and that great abilities are built over time. This is the path of opportunity–and success.
Dweck demonstrates that mindset unfolds in childhood and adulthood and drives every aspect of our lives, from work to sports, from relationships to parenting. She reveals how creative geniuses in all fields–music, literature, science, sports, business–apply the growth mindset to achieve results. Perhaps even more important, she shows us how we can change our mindset at any stage of life to achieve true success and fulfillment. She looks across a broad range of
applications and helps parents, teachers, coaches, and executives see how they can promote the growth mindset.
Highly engaging and very practical, Mindset breaks new ground as it leads you to change how you feel about yourself and your future.
“This book is an essential read for parents, teachers, coaches, and others who are instrumental in determining a child’s mind-set, and in turn, his or her future success, as well as for those who would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment.” --Library Journal

Repetitive stories.......2007-09-06
The text as written certainly succeeds with many. In my case, I got the message after 3 or 4 repeats of the 'growth mindset can do it' theme. As story after story repeats the same theme, which is a good message, I began wondering when some background exploration would begin. It never happened.
I've read other works by Dweck. She plays the role of editor in the recent "Handbook of Competence and Motivation" (in this book the two mindsets are called 'fixed' and 'incremental'). It is very academic and technical, but a treasure trove of insights. I liked it so much I'm going through it again with a fine tooth comb. I'd check Mindsets out at a bookstore or library. If you find yourself wanting more, take a look at Dweck's other books.
Repetitive and Misleading.......2007-09-05
Mindset makes the argument that people who believe they can improve themselves will be more likely to take chances and grow.
There. I've said it. Now you don't need to read the book.
The rest of the book consists of stories that illustrate the above idea. Many many stories. All with the same lesson. The book is really a pamphlet.
Also, I think the book is misleading. The latest research shows that we all have strengths and weaknesses and that we do best when we leverage these natural abilities. I think Mindset misses this point and, in fact, suggests the opposite.
Now, Discover Your Strengths is a much better book for those seeking personal growth.
Hidden Treasure.......2007-08-31
Awareness alone of the concept of a fixed mindset Vs growth mindset can be enough to make a significant impact on people's lives. Some people have criticized the book for being too repetitive / lengthy but that's like complaining that you had to dig through some mud to find a diamond. Who cares - her book has the power to enrich people's lives and she should be given great credit for writing this book. I highly recommend this book.
Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.......2007-08-23
Great concepts & very applicable. Some of the examples Dweck uses may be misrepresented a little bit to coincide with her theory.
An Essential Read.......2007-08-11
Carol Dweck's book is an essential read for any parent, educator, leader or student. In other words it is essential read for just about anybody. Dweck, in her very well-written book, exposes our often hidden assumptions about abilities and intelligence. She provides many excellent examples from education, sports and business.
Some reviewers at this site have been critical that Dweck does not provide specific instructions as to how to move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. I believe they miss the point. By becoming aware of what we were formally unaware of, we will automatically begin the process of change. Since this process of change is different for each of us, there can be no specific instructions.
What we are unaware of binds us. Dweck helps to remove our chains.

Book Description
We are an animal-loving population, with consumers in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom spending top dollar on their pets. This trend indicates that pet owners want the best for their dogs and cats. Scientific research shows that home-cooked meals are better for your pets -- especially dogs and cats -- than store-brand food. Feeding pets all-natural homemade food and treats not only provides nutritional and health benefits, but allows pet owners to meet their pet's taste preferences and special needs, and gives them the opportunity to nurture their dog or cat as they would any other member of the family.
The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs is full of information on nutrition for your pet and dozens of stories and recipes from real animal lovers and pet owners that give an intimate, personal voice to the book.

Dog Food.......2007-09-20
This book is not worth buying. You could do as well by just cooking anything yourself and giving it to your dog. This has no special recipes that are dog specific and evaluated for their nutritional content. (which is what I expected)

I would not buy this item if I had saw it first. Not what I was looking for.
My frenchie gives it a big "paw up!".......2007-09-04
My frenchie puppy loves the Chicken n' Rice stew mixed with a little kibble. He's growing like crazy. I can't wait until his first birthday to make the doggie cake!
Good, but needs further research and adjusting.......2007-07-17
This book is good, but by no means the perfect book of recipes. I have had it for probably 6 months now and did further research before using the recipes in the book. A lot of the "stew" recipes call for pasta (which we all know is a simple carb, not found in nature) and only a small amount of meat compared to the rest of the ingredients. What I've done is adjust the recipes I choose to use by upping the meat amount by 3-4 times and eliminating all pasta from the recipes. I include all the veggies/legumes/brown rice as suggested as these add essential vitamins/minerals/antioxidents. I also feed this as my dog's PRIMARY diet, without the kibble that the book suggests. For breakfast, my dog (16lb bichon frise) receives 1/2 c. of stew and for dinner he receives 1/2 c. of stew plus 1/2tsp a powdered dog vitamin supplement that I mix in. He loves it and is healthy by all accounts!
Bad Recipe.......2007-07-13
I have a recipe that was printed in Woman's Day with Donna's recipe for Oatmeal Apple Cookies for dogs. It is horrible to make. Dryer than a bone(no pun intended) to roll out; the dough would not stick together. They also did not take but 18 minutes to bake and not her 30-35 minutes.
I followed the directions and know how to bake so I don't know what was so wrong. I have tried to find her through search and there is nowhere to contact her.
The recipe needed more oil and more water to make the dough pliable. Really, to be able to just roll out. At least my dog like them but I will never make then again!

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us, mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts, emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own.

Beware iPod Users.......2007-09-28
The content of this set of 10 CDs is wonderful!! The problem is that each disk has between 45 and 70 tracks which are titled: Track 1, Track 2, etc. So... when you download them to your iPod, they get sorted alphabetically and you get Track 1 (from disk 1), Track 1 (from disk 2), etc. You have to either download one CD at a time, or rename all the tracks. It was very time consuming and disappointing not to have all I wanted in an organized way to download to my iPod. Just be aware when you buy these CDs.
Itty bitty book .......2007-09-28
Got to have good eyes to see the print.
My bad... did not realize it was a Brief on the Large one.
Makes a nice little accessory sitting next to Librarian Barbie... makes her look so smart.

Great Condensed Version.......2007-09-27
Mistakenly I ordered this book thinking it was the "real" book that had been recommended for us in class, several people have recommened it to me and I have recommended it to people every day...It's really been neat to share with others who are not going to read the "real" version. The people that have recommended it to me have laughed when they saw how small it is and even a child asked me to read this to her thinking it was a child's book....I really must get the original version. The small condensed version was great, fantastic, awesome for anyone to read. Please read if you are married, not married, in ANY kind of relationship with ANYONE...
boundaries.......2007-09-23
totally disappointed that the book was only a "miniature" version of the full size book. Nothing prepared me for that. I felt totally misled!
You'll never get tired of listening to this one!.......2007-09-09
Wonderful help in working out why you are the way you are and how to deal with others successfully. Empowering. Helps you get your thinking straight on relationship issues. While the focus is Christian, it is also appropriate for anyone and would not be offensive or difficult for the non-Christian or agnostic/aetheist. The narrator's voice is somewhat annoying, however, eventually you get used to it. What he is saying is so worthwhile!

Book Description
From universally beloved author Alexander McCall Smith, comes this seventh installment in the bestselling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series featuring Botswana’s best-loved detective.
Life is good for Mma Ramotswe as she sets out with her usual resolve to solve people’s problems, heal their misfortunes, and untangle the mysteries that make life interesting. And life is never dull on Tlokweng Road. A new and rather too brusque advice columnist is appearing in the local paper. Then, a cobra is found in the offices of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Recently, the Mokolodi Game Preserve manager feels an infectious fear spreading among his workers, and a local doctor may be falsifying blood pressure readings. To further complicate matters, Grace Makutsi may have scared off her own fiancé. Mma Ramotswe, however, is always up to the challenge. And Blue Shoes and Happiness will not fail to entertain Alexander McCall Smith’s oldest fans and newest converts with its great wit, charm, and great good will.

Praise for In the Company of Cheerful Ladies:
• National Bestseller
“Beloved Botswana sleuth Precious Ramotswe is back – and better than ever – in this sixth entry in McCall Smith’s bestselling series. . . . By turns laugh-out-loud funny and quietly profound, these life-affirming mysteries are fine company, indeed.”
–Booklist, starred review
“Like clove oil on a bad tooth, McCall Smith’s fiction acts on cynicism as an effective, old-fashioned balm.”
–The Globe and Mail
“May be the most compelling of the lot. . . . It begins with an incident that crystallizes McCall Smith’s skill. Ultimately it is a matter of petty thievery, but his handling of it dramatizes the moral underpinnings of these books. . . . [Mma Ramotswe’s] strength – and the source of her enormous appeal – is her understanding of the human heart, and her willingness to confront its perfidies.”
–New York Daily News
“These books offer a sunnily lit window into another world, along with a modicum of relief from certain aspects of modern Western culture. They never descend into mere escapism, though. A few hours spent with Precious Ramotswe and her friends is always time well spent.”
–St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“[The] sixth entry in McCall Smith’s consistently delightful series. . . Amid the hilarious scenarios and quiet revelations are luminous descriptions of Botswana, land of wide-open spaces and endless blue skies.”
–Publishers Weekly, starred review

Customer Reviews:
Continuing a tradition of great books..........2007-09-20
After a long string of mediocre or uninspiring books, it was such a joy to read Blue Shoes and Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith. I save these books for when I'm in such a rut because I know that they will be wonderful and I'll be able to linger and enjoy them and feel good about reading again. I'll be motivated and excited about reading again. I knew I'd want to pick up my next book right away. Somehow these books reenergize me.
In this installment we have Mma Romatswe solving a blackmailing mystery, she tackles a physician who is committing fraud against his patients, she confronts voodoo, deals with the fact that her traditionally built figure is causing problems. All they while there is an underlying tension between her and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni. Mma Makutsi deals with feminism and her new fiance and Mr. Polopetsi practices being an assistant to the assistant detective Makutsi...and somehow those apprentices seem to be growing up.
As in his other books, Smith addresses the issues of the traditional Botswana ways and how they are being taken over by newer more modern ways that are eating away at a civilized and logical way of addressing the world. Mma Romatswe as the central figure, always helps everyone see how they have been attracted to shiny inconsequential things and need to be more focused on what is important. I love the way she is able to feel anger or frustration and then think through whether it is worth the energy--and usually it isn't. However, when necessary she confronts people gone bad and manages to help them come around--sometimes. There are those that are "uncurable"--People who are evil--and those she realizes she has to stop.
Smith did a good job of setting up the next book. I'm looking forward to finding out what this tension is between Mma Romatswe and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni. I can't wait to see how Mma Makutsi's love of pretty shoes develops and how her relationship with Mr. Phuti goes. I'm also looking forward to seeing more of the children as well as the apprenticeships. Was the outburst from Charlie really an expression of his burgeoning maturity. I'm so glad that book #8 is published and on my shelf so I can read it immediately when I'm next in a slump.
Another good book in the series..........2007-08-13
Although these books will never end up on a list of significant fiction, as always they are a quick and enjoyable read. This book continues the delightful story of the Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency.
Blue Shoes and Happiness.......2007-08-13
Not a very exciting story. Not fast moving. Cute, very simplistic story.
The principle of "Less is More".......2007-07-10
One of the oft-heard criticisms of cozy mysteries is that "nothing much happens." If one thinks in terms of high-speed chases and blood-spattered corpses, I can see the point.
The only corpse in this book is a much-maligned bird, but its death brought tears to my eyes.
Alexander McCall Smith has mastered the subtle undertones of gentle conversation, of deftly defined characters, of landscape portraiture. Saying that nothing much happens in his books is like saying that a panther is nothing but a big housecat.
The principle of "less is more" applies here. BLUE SHOES AND HAPPINESS is a perfect title for a very nearly perfect book. I say very nearly perfect because that's how one rates a magnificent diamond.
Excellent Author.......2007-07-05
Keeps your interest all the way through the book, in fact, throughout the whole series.

Customer Reviews:
great book!.......2007-09-01
This book I loved when I was reading the pages, and how it gives you a little passport in the back of the book like it was actually a real passport. The books description of the garden when they first get out of the tree house in Japan just gives me a picture of what it looks like in real life. This book had a bit of humor and that adds coolness to the book. Buy this book!!!!!!!! I'm 11.
Mary Pope Osborne: Never A Disappointment........2007-07-23
Osborne forever captures history, folklore and imagination into the minds of many young and old alike. Her books are ever a delight to read to my son (even though he's able to read by himself) and more, a delight to hear when they come out on audiocassette!
I recommend this book.......2007-06-10
I liked it because Jack and Annie travel to Japan which is a really cool place and I think more people should read this book. It is better than any other book because it is the newest of the series.
Dragon of the Red Dawn.......2007-05-27
This is a wonderful book for kids. I love it, so much that I bring it with me everywhere I go. I have read this, and like it. It takes place In old Japan. Jack and Annie meet a poet named Basho, and spend the day with him. I have learned about Basho in school and most of the things the book told about him I knew. I was thrilled reading about the Samuarai, and when the fire came around I was so excited I almost screamed! Dragon of the Red Dawn is a good book to read.
Hard for parents to suspend belief, but the kids loved it........2007-05-14
Another classic Magic Treehouse installment, this time in imperial Japan. The haiku and deatils of life in Edo made this book informative for the little ones (4,6) and a little more interesting for the parents reading it. The fact that it involves a dragon was a big plus for both of them. The rating is only relative to other magic treehouse books, and not to the vast choice of better children's literature out there. All that said, I am sure it would make a good read for 7-8 year olds delving into books on their own for the first time.

Book Description
In this short, powerful book, multimillionaire and bestselling author Steven K. Scott reveals King Solomon’s breakthrough strategies to achieve a life of financial success and personal fulfillment.
Steve Scott flunked out of every job he held in his first six years after college. He couldn’t succeed no matter how hard he tried. Then Dr. Gary Smalley challenged him to study the book of Proverbs, promising that in doing so he would achieve greater success and happiness than he had ever known. That promise came true, making Scott a millionaire many times over.
In The Richest Man Who Ever Lived, Scott reveals Solomon’s key for winning every race, explains how to resolve conflicts and turn enemies into allies, and discloses the five qualities essential to becoming a valued and admired person at work and in your personal life. Scott illustrates each of Solomon’s insights and strategies with anecdotes about his personal successes and failures, as well as those of such extraordinary people as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, and Steven Spielberg.
At once inspiring and instructive, THE RICHEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED weaves the timeless truths of one of our greatest works of literature into a detailed roadmap for successful living today.

The book is redundant and contradictory of itself. First the author says he didn't follow Proverbs as a young man then he says because of following Proverbs as a young man things went his way. I commend the author's efforts and I believe to some degree he does live by The Good Book, but honestly I think we all know what the author wants you to do, and what the Man Upstairs wants you to do. I now read Proverbs daily. It is a wonderful thing to do and I've recommended it to many. Rather than buy this book go download Proverbs and start reading. If you are looking for a book that will take you about 3 hours to read that will ultimately tell you to read Proverbs about 100 times then read this book. Thank you for your time.
Dynamic Wisdom.......2007-08-13
This book definitely changes your perspective and causes you to reposition yourself concerning the promises and principles of God.
A challenge with a promise........2007-07-25
After praying about what career advice to give his friend, Gary Smaller offered his friend Steve Scott a challenge in which he promised that if Steve would follow the advice, he would not only be successful, but would be a millionaire in 5 years. The challenge was to read a chapter of the proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters in proverbs, and most months have 31 days, he was instructed to read the chapter that corresponded to the day of the month. Steve took the advice and made good on the promise his friend gave him.
The book is based on the principals/lessons/advice from the Proverbs. It explores the meanings of certain passages and shows how to derive benefit from them. Steve shares some of his own experiences throughout.
Solomon was the wisest, richest man that ever was or will be. Seems like someone worth listening to and studying doesn't it?
This is a book that can make a positive difference in your life.
Great Book.......2007-07-16
Great Book that discusses the benefit of not going alone but having other like minded individuals around you. Backs a lot of his thoughts/facts with scripture from the book of Proverbs. I actually read the book about a year ago and am currently re-reading it. Great book, great, easy, quick read.
