Customer Reviews:
Does read like an informercial, but it's not all bad!.......2007-06-26
I use Revival Soy products (the shakes & protein bars, low carb versions) on a regular basis and enjoy them for the most part. It one of the few products I've ever used that have actually done for me what they say it does. It's helped greatly alleviate my PMS symptoms, clear up my skin, and more. My husband doesn't need further convincing to keep Revival Soy in my life...he doesn't miss the PMS witch at all! Even with the controversies that surround soy products, I stick with Revival Soy...I don't want to go back to what I was (or how I felt) before it.
With that said, when I heard that Dr. Tabor and Revival Soy were coming out with a diet book, I got excited and actually looked forward to reading it. (I hate reading diet books.)
Well, by chance I was able to get a free copy. I'm glad I got it for free, as I would not have been completely happy if I had to pay more than a few bucks for this book.
The biggest reason? This book does come off as a informercial. I've caught myself rolling my eyes on more than one occasion...and I'm only 1/2 way through the book!
Despite that, I have found a lot of great tidbits and inspiration to help keep me motivated in my current weight loss journey. While I'm not doing the Revival Diet plan per se, (I prefer to stick with my low carb diet) I still enjoyed some of what the book had to say and gave me some new ideas and inspiration to work with.
To me the real value of this book is in the psychology of going through the weight loss process. Losing weight is not easy...but if we can keep a positive attitude about it - about ourselves - we will enjoy the journey of change better than just a quick fix plan.
If you can pick up this book for "cheap" then I think you will find some gems in there worth reading. If you're not a fan of informercials, then stay away!
Worst book ever..........2007-04-19
There is nothing in this book that hasn't been said before and it points out in numerous places that you have to follow the entire plan exactly. Which means living off of the author's products. It was like reading over 150 pages of an infomercial.
Not worth the price..........2007-04-18
This diet book provides Dr. Aaron Tabor yet another forum from which to tout his soy products. Interspersed with recommendations about a variety of other supplements (all of which I had heard about previously), this book contains such breakthrough diet advice as: eat small to be small. The tidbits provided by Dr. Tabor's mother, while mildly amusing, offered little in the way of useful material. It may interest readers to know that mama knew it was time to do something when she looked like an overstuffed sausage casing in her slimming undergarment, but these interspersed comments get annoying quickly and seem more like filler than useful advice. This program isn't unique - it's simply repackaged material from a dozen different books already on the market.
Great New Book!.......2007-04-05
Unfortunately, current popular diets offered to consumers focus only on weight loss, not total-body beauty inside and out. Dr. Aaron Tabor, M.D., a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, has created his next-generation "The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet." The program is the first clinically proven inside-out makeover diet plan for dramatic weight loss and improved skin, hair, and nail appearance, year round.
"Using topically applied creams and lotions is only 50 percent of battle against the visible signs of aging. The other 50 percent starts inside for a slim figure and gorgeous skin, hair, and nails," said Dr. Tabor.
Developed during the past seven years at some of the nation's top hospitals, "The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet" was originally created to rescue Dr. Tabor's mother, Suzanne Tabor, from what he calls a "midlife meltdown." His mother experienced a rapidly expanding waistline, deepening wrinkle appearance, dull hair, brittle nails, menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. The program was carefully designed as a simple, yet effective, diet and physical activity plan to help dieters achieve:
* An average weight loss of 26 to 29 pounds in just sixteen weeks (among the best results ever published in medical history);
* A rapid reduction in belly fat (up to 25 percent or more in sixteen weeks) with a reduced waist circumference;
* Improved appearance of wrinkles and skin with less roughness and better coloration;
* Increase in hair silkiness with reduced dullness and better manageability;
* Sexier nails with less splitting, ridging and flaking;
* A reduction in hunger and cravings for sweet, salty, and crunchy foods;
* Promotion of better energy levels with protein-packed, low-glycemic "smart-carb" choices; and
* Promotion of normal hormonal health (including reduction of hot flashes), bone health, and cholesterol levels.
Revival dieters did not experience the typical weight loss "plateau" seen in many other diets, thus indicating that Revival dieters can continue to lose significant weight well beyond the initial sixteen weeks.
"The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet" book, co-authored by Dr. Tabor and his mother Suzanne, encompasses unique and tangible research-based guidelines to help dieters achieve maximum, long-term results. The eight-chapter book not only highlights the physical steps needed to successfully diet, but it also touches upon the psychological aspects. Chapter three, entitled "The Ten Psychological Commandments of Permanent Weight Loss," addresses the deeper meanings of dieting and helps consumers become mentally determined for permanent weight loss. When the principles learned from the aforementioned chapter are paired with the more actively involved guidelines in such chapters as "The Fifteen Physical Laws of Accelerated Weight Loss," and "Put A Tiger In Your Tank...Energize Me!" dieters are guaranteed to experience a lasting "inside-out nutritional makeover."
"The proven power and simplicity of `The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet' can help any dieter improve the way they look and feel," said Dr. Tabor. Tabor continued, "Looking great isn't vanity. It's victory. This diet is designed to help people lose weight, look beautiful and live healthier, empowered lives."
Consumers can learn more about the latest inside-out makeover technology, including how to promote better facial bones, and view a special video from Dr. Tabor.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Already Not Yet
When Jesus announced, “the kingdom of God is at hand,” what did He mean? Uncover the reality of the kingdom of God and what it might look like if followers of Christ practiced its in-breaking presence. What happens when we view life through the lens of the kingdom? How does the beauty of Jesus’ reign break into the mess of our broken lives and world? What if we lived as though a world other than this one was here today? This Beautiful Mess launches a paradigm-shifting journey inviting us to experience the kingdom of God in the ordinary miracle of our everyday lives.
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.
When a man found it, he…
sold all he had and bought that field.”
—Matthew 13:44
Jesus’ sayings about the kingdom of God just might be the most overlooked of his teachings. Yet the Good News of the kingdom—a treasure beyond price—was what he came to preach.
It’s time to ask:
What is the kingdom Jesus talked about?
Could it be already here, hidden from sight? If so, where is it?
How can I be a part of it?
A new generation is tuning in to the teachings of Jesus and to their revolutionary implications. Could it be that living under Christ’s reign is not merely a future vision but a present reality?
Rick McKinley’s exploration is fresh, accessible, and timely. With careful attention to historical texts, he unveils new understandings of authentic personal and social transformation. The time is now. Your opportunity is here. In the mess of everyday life, you can live in the beautiful presence of the kingdom.
Story Behind the Book
”When we started Imago Dei Community, it was with a passion to be people who live in love with Jesus and live out the values of His kingdom in our city. But we had no idea how to do that. God let us stumble into grace and discover the wide-open plains of His kingdom. This has ruined us in the best way possible. Because once you taste untamed life in the kingdom, you will never go back to the sterile hallways of religion. The beautiful, transforming grace of Christ shows up in the messiness of life and the kingdom breaks in as a beautiful mess.”—Rick McKinley

Brilliant yet simple.......2007-09-18
This is so brilliant yet easy to understand. This world is simultaneously beautiful, because God created it, but a mess, because sin entered in and oh yes, because we live here and make mistakes.
I learned so much about the kingdom of God and the fact that we're living IN it, not waiting FOR it.
A really, really, really great read...see for yourself!
The new religion.......2007-08-29
This Beautiful Mess by Rick McKinley is a book about living in the present world's mess in the way Jesus described the Kingdom of God. Rick is the pastor of Imago Dei Community in Portland , Oregon and he challenges the reader to go beyond the traditional religiousity of churches and get down and dirty among all the people at hand and practice faith and gratitude every day and experience the Kingdom of God at hand in doing so, even in the worst circumstances and among undesirable people.
A glimpse of real Christianity.......2007-07-26
The main mandate of Christ was to love others as we love ourselves. This was topped only by the request to love God. McKinley's book offers a glimpse into what service and grace look like and what, I believe, Christ really offers us.
Great work!.......2007-07-25
This book is clear and concise. It does a great job of pointing to Christ in the midst of our day to day lives. It convicted me; encouraged me; entertained me and most importantly it challenged me. Great job, Rick!
A Clear, Insightful, Biblical, & Practical Look at the "Kingdom of God".......2007-06-28
Jesus proclaimed a single message in a thousand different ways, "Repent for the kingdom of God is arriving." Those mysterious words are frequently lost in our day through their assumptive, inattentive use in pop-Christian culture; but they name the heart of God for humanity. Rick's personal approach to this core message of Christ is thoughtful, gentle, deep, and well-aimed ... right at the heart. It's written in a style that appeals to both men and women and captures the imaginations of all who seek more than empty religion in their experience of God in this life. It's easily in my top five books to recommend to both Christ-followers and unbelieving seekers.

My Beautiful Broken Shell.......2007-09-05
Encouragement to get through grief, remembering what we still have to live for, and recalling that grief is a part of this life. It comes, but the intensity will lessen, and we will be able to remember our lost one with love, joy and hope.
hope.......2007-07-04
I received this as a gift from a dear friend in a time of crisis--it was very healing!
My Beautiful Broken Shell.......2007-06-27
I treasure this book from a dear friend. It is realy about how beautiful a sea shell broken or perfect can be. A comparison of life, none of us are perfect, but each one is a beautiful person just like a broken sea shell.
Incredible!.......2006-02-20
This book was given to me when my husband passed away. I read it and was comforted. However, it was not until I re-read it a year later, that I really understood it! Needless to say, i ordered several copies for my sons and friends who have lost partners. This book made me realize that it was ok to "be a broken shell".
A unique way to express compassion.......2005-09-29
There are few books or cards that adequately express compassion to people who have endured or are experiencing tragic loss. This small, beautiful book offers genuine words that express the honesty of heartbreak as well as the hope of healing. I received it as a gift when a loved one died suddenly, and I have purchased several for friends who are struggling with grief. This book would also be appropriate for someone who has any type of loss, such as shattered hopes or expectations.
Book Description
This is a book about a man who excelled in a game of soccer. Pele is a athlete best know throughout the world. He is the only three-time world champion in soccer. "I dedicate this book to all the people who have made this great game the Beautiful Game." - Pele
Customer Reviews:
O Rei Pele!.......2006-07-29
I read this book as a kid in Nigeria...Pele's legend cannot be imitated or duplicated...his feats are simply majestic...very humble, classy superstar who never let the accolades get to him..97 goals for Brazil and 1283 club goals is ridiculous! People dont even score 300 goals anymore..You would think that by playing 1300 games, he'd break down at some point...the book was a great read...get his new one "PELE" (autobio)!
The Best Player Ever........2006-07-21
This is an exceptionally detailed biography. The statistical chart at the back of all the games he played in was a very pleasant surprise. The only things missing was some tactical diagrams and a map of Brazil. Every chapter added colorful insight into his life-Ch's-2,6,8-facts of life, 9-Pele in love and 17. He also gave the reader the fine nuances of the "beautiful game." Chapters-1,3-5,10,12,14-1,000 goal,15-16,18,19-20-Cosmos years. I found chapters 7-race relations in Brazil,11-the trainor, and 13-Santos years to be the most interesting. Lastly, I could not agree more with Pele's distaste for defensive Football on 310-11.
A well-written autobiography.......2006-02-19
It's fortunate for the soccer-fan readers that the author focuses his writing on what happens on soccer field. I don't really care that much about his company, although it helps to understand the author's personalities as a whole.
It would be even better if the author describe how he thought of scoring those famous goals (even just say subcouciously I scored).
Some diagrams would help too.
A Good book about The Greatest of The Beautiful Game.......2004-10-05
I was too young to see Pele while he still was an active footballer, but growing up in a football loving home I've been fed with the legend of this fantastic athlete. My Dad always told me about the greatness of Pele, and I always felt that I lost our "arguments" about whether "my generations" superstar Maradona or "his generations" star Pele actually was the Greatest One.
I bought this book to find out more about the legendary Pele. Wow, wasn't this a great book? When understanding what impact this man had on the beautiful game it's easy to see how he can be recognized as the Greatest. He wasn't only an extremely talented athlete; he was also a man with a wonderful heart and who had his morals in order. I'm sure you find a picture of Pele in the dictionary if you look up the word "sportsmanship".
I think this well written book is a worthy tribute to this great athlete. It tells us the this to-good-to-be-true motivational story about a man with an extreme talent that goes all the way from poverty thru a triumphant career all the way to the top of the beautiful game...and he do so with style!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Edson Arantes do Nascimento: Pele' and his beautiful game.......2004-03-06
Few athletes have captured the world's collective admiration and respect as Edson Arantes do Nascimento. Known affectionately to his family as Dico, but to the rest of us as Pele', his influence far exceeded his tremendous exploits on the soccer field. He is one of the most recognized people in the world.
This well-written, extremely detailed, and intriguing autobiography takes us deeply into Pele's world. He describes in great detail his impoverished youth in Bauru, his rapid ascent into the Brazilian National Team, his stellar years at Santos Football Club, and finally, his desire to bring soccer to the skeptical masses in North America. But throughout it all, we see his humility. "I only wanted to be as good as my father, Dodinho."
I had the opportunity to play soccer with a Brazilian who played with Pele' at Santos. My friend was very young at the time, and told me that Pele' treated him very well. "He was well-liked by everyone, and always helpful to his teammates. You never knew he was the best player in the world. He acted just like a regular guy."
Out of his many feats (playing in the World Cup final at the age of 17, the only three time winner of the World Cup, scoring almost 1300 goals), one stands out. Pele' is perhaps the only athlete to ever stop a war. During the Biafran Civil War in Nigeria, a three day truce was called to watch him play two exhibition games.
Pele' was declared a national treasure by his native Brazil. But for the millions of us who had the privilege to see him play, he was our treasure as well.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this excellent book.

Incredible!!!!.......2007-10-03
I don't know what inspired me to buy this book. But I sure am glad I did! Angela's awkward childhood brought tears to my eyes as I remembered my own childhood impediments. Long frizzy black hair--a patch over one eye----coke bottle glasses----
Angela's book is a wonderful reminder not to get so caught up with trying to meet the world's standards of beauty. In all of our misguided passions we are sure to miss the wonderful attributes that God has gifted us with. If we leave them unattended for vain pursuits they will never fully bloom.

Universal must read for everyone woman.......2007-07-15
Truthfully I did not like the title and almost did not read the book. It was highly recommended by I friend so I went ahead and read it. After reading this book I loved it and actually taught it for a group of ladies in our church. I highly recommend the workbook too. I plan to go throught the teen version with my daughter when she is old enough.

encouraging.......2007-04-11
This book was recommended for my daughter by a therapist at her inpatient facility she's in for anorexia. I bought it for her and read it first. I thought it was excellent, but thought many of the thoughts were for an older person...she's 14. After buying this book I realized there is a version for teens. I purchased that for her too. She said the girls at the center all loved the teen version that was done in a magazine format. So, great book for an adult, but if it's for a teen, I'd go with the book modeled after this one just for them!
Life Changing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-14
What a powerful revelation of the way our Heavenly Father sees us! This has truly transformed my entire walk with the Lord.
Life Changing.......2006-07-20
This book will absolutely enhance your relationship with God to a whole new level! This book was chosen as a guide for my Summer Bible Study. We are a group of college-age girls and were looking for a book that could really speak to us on the topic of being beautiful in the eyes of God and this book was it! Each chapter teaches a valuable lesson about God's love for each and every one of us. God has used Angela Thomas to reach women in our contemporary world of today. Thomas pulls everything from scripture with a "I'm not making this stuff up" tone. What a wonderful book!

Not for Adoptees.......2007-07-09
If you're a Korean adoptee born before 1990 (I am) and you're looking for more insight on why you were given up for adoption, this is not the book for you.
The "letters" written by the women in the book will seem contrived and form-like in nature after you have read 10 of them. I understand that these women are all in the same situation and location therefore the letters might seem similar in nature, but honestly, they did not provide any other information or emotional support for me. Perhaps, I am not the audience this book is aimed towards, however, I found it extremely disappointing.
Heartfelt but Flawed .......2006-08-02
I thought that the essays in this collection were heartfelt, to say the least -- at times gutwrenching. However, the book's editing is so unilateral as to leave me wondering just how universal the feelings presented in these essays are.
All the women who contributed to this collection were at the same maternity home. As one part of their couseling and education they were required to write a letter to the child they were placing for adoption -- [some of] the letters that were chosen for this collection. As another part of their education, they attended religious training. So, many of the letters are quite religious in nature. Most are extremely emotional -- emotional language that may not be typical of every day life nor even of these particular women, since it was part of the "exercise" to explore this in their letter writing.
In looking to read how birth parents feel, I found this book too uniform -- same facility, same training, same counseling per author -- to tell me whether or not this is indicitive of a typical birthmother response, or a typical Korean birthmother response. I'd have loved to hear from birthmothers from other institutions or hospitals, with varying religious beliefs, pre- and post- education, and at different times in the process.
It was clear to me from the introduction that the editors had a large part in conveying the birthmother experience -- the way they chose the letters, the way they organized them, how few letters were chosen from many, how they tell the reader to respond to them, and their own viewpoints plainly stated in ways that were entirely consistent with the material presented. I found the editorial comments at the start nearly too consistent with the material in the book, as it told me just how much the editors' own feelings influenced their choices.
It's unfortunate, because I think this is a stellar idea for a book. But the one thing it lacked was the precise element I sought -- How do birthmothers tend to feel? Not, How do birthmothers at Ae Ran Won who have received certain training and instruction to write their feelings tend to feel, but what is their true experience?
Questions for others.......2006-07-16
I have a couple of concerns about this book. As a mom who has lost a child to adoption, I am familiar with the "writing a letter to your child" right after placement and filling up the pages with words of hope. However, often times, this is not the full scope of the reality of what has happened to the mom, and it is a once done thing, and is frozen in time. It doesn't seem to go into depth of the sense of loss that these women will feel later, how they will be affected negatively by the loss of their child, despite their greatest hopes forced into making this decision through lack of any real options by profit making agencies.
I would love to read a book that is about mothers who've lost children in other countries twenty years after placement (or so) to talk about their experience and how it affected them for the rest of their life.
ADOPTION BOOK LIKE NO OTHER.......2006-04-07
As an adoptive Mom, I have read countless books on adoption. None have touched my heart like this one. This book gives dignity to the choice of relenquishing a child for the sake of their future. It shows the internal battle that rages within a young mother who is forced to make a decision because of her situation & cultural stigmas. All the stories take you to Ae Ran Won & show you that before we were Momma, there was someone who will forever have left an indelible mark on the hearts of our precious chosen children. A MUST READ FOR ANY ADOPTIVE PARENT!!
Informative reading.......2005-09-15
As a Korean myself (not an adoptee)I am familiar with the dramatic ways that Koreans express their feelings. While this makes me somewhat skeptical of the emotions expressed in this book, there's still enough information in the book that is well worth the read. For example, How do these single moms end up in the situations they find themselves in? Why do they feel they need to give up the baby? What are their backgrounds? What do they hope for their babies? I found this book very helpful in answering these questions for me. I recommend this book to all adult adoptees, adoptive parents, potential A-parents, social workers working with Korean adoptions, etc.

A LIFE CHANGING READ.......2007-05-29
Growing up in Northern Virginia I always had a vague sense of the crab's popularity, both for dining and as a sort of a local mascot for people who live near the Bay. However, I had only eaten them at my aunt's house in Benedict, MD. and thought them to be strange and hard to eat. They made me feel inferior some how not knowing the technique and how exactly my aunt was able to come up with these bushels during the warm summer months. I dedicated last summer to learning all about the Bay and the blue crab and the wonderful people who make a living off them. I was transformed with the knowledge from the book that explains so many details about the life of the crab, the watermen and their families. The author is so creative with the insights he reveals. After reading this book, I am equipped to speak intelligently about the geographical areas, crab industry and most importantly-how to get and eat these beautiful swimmers!
Attention to Detail.......2006-06-03
Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much. I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced. Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.
Beautiful Swimmers.......2005-08-18
Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Often, environmental writers stand the risk of in a way reducing the Bay to merely some sort of ecological experiment. Some I have read do not take into account that every little change in the Bay, whether the fault of Mother Nature or ourselves, drastically affects the people whose entire livelihood is fished out of these waters. Fortunately, the author(s) of Beautiful Swimmers does not fall into that trap.
The Watermen have a unique love affair with the Blue Crab. As evidenced by my own home town's "Hard Crab Derby" celebration ever year. This book, I think, gives a very fair and honest portrayal of these seemingly simple people with seemingly simple lives. Its handling of carcinological matters is anything but boring, including an in-detail description of how the crabs make love.
I would highly suggest this work not only for its informative value but for its treatment of the inherant poetry and beauty of the Bay. Even at the time of its publishing, the downward trend in the Bay's health was growing more evident. Today the situation is even more precarious, and requires a very delicate balance between the health of the Bay that supports so many and the people themselves, whose lives have been spent gleaning from these once bountiful waters an income, and who keep alive the traditions of Watermen from over four centuries ago.
Let us protect the Bay, this precious resource of ours, but we must not forget about the people.
Once again, an exceptional book, and one that I recommend for anyone interested in the Conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that depend upon it.
Entertaining and Educational.......2005-01-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know. I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened. The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written.
It Takes You There...........2004-11-16
Beautiful Swimmers will make you feel like you are a part of growing up in the Chesapeake Bay region. If you already did so, it will bring you back home.
Beautiful Swimmers serves as excellent literature for a multitude of readers: naturalists, historians, travellers, and folks who enjoy reading a good novel. It also provides a good blend of natural and cultural resource history.
I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area (Deale, MD) several years ago and was referred to Beautiful Swimmers by several members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Prior to reading Beautiful Swimmers, I grew extremely fond of living on the bay. Since reading the book, I have that much more appreciation for the culture of the bay.

Gooble-Gobble.............2007-06-28
This book was one of many that heralded the insidious rise of the dreaded "New Age Movement" that never materialized. It's a bit humorous to see the author report as genuine nonsense such as "psychic surgeries", which have been thoroughly debunked. Her credulity is striking and colors the entire book. The 1980's were permeated with similar paranoid and ignorant thinking ("subliminal advertising"?, "backward masking"?) A better purchase would be Michael Shermer's "Why People Believe Weird Things"!
Dreadful beyond measure.......2007-05-15
This is awful.
As bad as the thoroughly debunked Johnny Todd, "Dr. Rebecca Brown" (see http://www.answersDOTorg/satan/brown.html - for more on this), Mike "Satan Seller" Warnke, etc.
This kind of material is unsourced, undocumented, and simply UNTRUE.
This is pure, crass sensationalism, akin to the "Satanic Panic" of the early 1980's. You remember that; where every day care center in America was engaging in "Satanic ritual abuse"? The only problem was that those stories were found to be untrue.
As Christians, we are held to a higher standard, which includes telling the truth. To do anything less is to drag the name of Jesus through the mud.
This book and others like it show a lack of knowledge of both the occult and of solid, orthodox Christian theology. And as such, works such as this are not of any more value than a trashy romance novel. In fact, this is worse, because it purports itself to be telling the truth when in fact, it is not. And this is done "all in the name of Jesus", which makes Him out as a liar and His followers out as fools in the eyes of those who read this stuff, and do the research to debunk its claims.
By the way, I'm now an Orthodox/Reformation/Calvinist minister. Sadly, I used to buy this stuff too. Then I grew up and started to research things like this to find out if they were true. Blame it on my college education at a major research University, where we were forced to adequately and accurately defend our positions with documentary evidence, NOT wild speculation and clever fiction.
Blame it on my wanting to defend the honor and integrity of my Lord from those who claim to speak in His name, but are not telling the truth.
I wish I could give this book negative stars, but Amazon does not give me the option to do so.
Do yourself a favor, avoid this, and perhaps try a book on Systematic Theology instead.
Book Purchase.......2007-04-06
I purchased the book The Beautiful Side of Evil by Johanna Michaelsen for a customer (as I run a bookstore). The book came with damage on the front cover. It was not extreme and my customer decided to pay for the book anyway. The book was sent in a timely manner.
I was there myself........2007-03-06
It has been a few years, but suffice it to say that I am hoping to write a book that may end up being a sequel to hers. I came on the scene of Pachita's environment in maybe a month after Joanna was gone. I found this out right after she had written the book. When I read the book I was amazed at the sychronization of our experiences, and having the same end result, because I was a true Christian by the time of the reading. My testimony is long, but I had the privelege of seeking God through every valley where truth was held captive, persevering in my search (since I was seven years old) compelled by the mystery of His Love "that never fails," and an idea that if I sought the Truth I would find HIM. Since I came to Christ at 33 - in 1982, I have continued the search to find the body of Christ, and intercession and seeking have kept me through all I have had to grow through and into. A truly amazing dimension that so many are being held back from. "They would not enter, neither would they allow those that would enter, to enter."
"Seek me and you will find me."
Great book!!!.......2007-01-27
Absolutely fascinating account of a journey through the world of the occult. Highly recommended!!!

"Every animal form is the product of two processes--development from an egg and evolution from its ancestors," writes Sean B. Carroll in his introduction to Endless Forms Most Beautiful. The new science of "evo devo"--or evolutionary developmental biology--examines the relationships between those two processes, embryonic development and evolutionary changes, despite their radically different time scales. Carroll first offers a recap of how genes express themselves in a growing embryo, then peers into the life histories of real-life examples to explain how those genes have changed (or not changed) over millions of years of evolution. Paraphrasing Thomas Huxley, he asks us to consider evolution and development as two sides of the same coin.
We may marvel at the process of an egg becoming an adult, but we accept it as an everyday fact. It is merely then a lack of imagination to fail to grasp how changes in this process that assimilated over long periods of time, far longer than the span of human experience, shape life's diversity."
The book's second half is where Carroll really gets at the meat of evo devo, explaining how regulatory genes control such mysteries as individual and population changes in butterfly's spots, jaguar fur, and hominid skulls. Evo devo is one of the hottest areas of study in 21st-century biology, and Carroll's outline of the field is a great place to start understanding it. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
"A beautiful and very important book."Lewis Wolpert, American Scientist
For over a century, opening the black box of embryonic development was the holy grail of biology. Evo DevoEvolutionary Developmental Biologyis the new science that has finally cracked open the box. Within the pages of his rich and riveting book, Sean B. Carroll explains how we are discovering that complex life is ironically much simpler than anyone ever expected.
Perhaps the most surprising finding of Evo Devo is the discovery that a small number of primitive genes led to the formation of fundamental organs and appendages in all animal forms. The gene that causes humans to form arms and legs is the same gene that causes birds and insects to form wings, and fish to form fins; similarly, one ancient gene has led to the creation of eyes across the animal kingdom. Changes in the way this ancient tool kit of genes is used have created all the diversity that surrounds us.
Sean Carroll is the ideal author to lead the curious on this intellectual adventurehe is the acknowledged leader of the field, and his seminal discoveries have been featured in Time and The New York Times. 16 pages of color and 100 black-and-white illustrations.

Interesting Book.......2007-08-23
I read this book over the summer for my AP Biology class. I was a bit nervous when I saw that this was a bargain book, but it was very informative and it kept me interested. Sean B. Carroll is an amazing author and this book opened my eyes to Evo Devo.
Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science Of Evo Devo And The Making Of The Animal Kingdom.......2007-07-30
This book offers a fresh perspective to evolution. The fact that our most complex human genetic processes take origin at a very primitive level. That is, we have evolved from a more primitive life form and our complexity evolves because we use or not use certain inherent basic genes or what the author calls "tool kits". The book gets pretty esoteric at times but the examples are good and the author writes clearly. I recommend the book for scientists and non-scientists. I suggest the creationists read the book to counter their argument that man is too complex to be left to the whim of random evolution. That is not to say there is not a higher power guiding the process but it is clear that the theory of evolution is sound and supported by works of Dr. Carroll, her colleagues and other developmental biologists.
New views of Darwinian evolution.......2007-01-03
Evo Devo consists of the merged sciences of evolution and embryology. The relationship between these two branches of science isn't new, but it has expanded hugely over the last several decades. Darwin anticipated the role that embryology played (and would play) in the theory of evolution, as Carroll shows by quoting Charles Darwin in his September 10, 1860 letter to Asa Gray:
"Embryology is to me by far the strongest single class of facts in favor of change of forms, and not one, I think, of my reviewers has alluded to this.
Even though Darwin clearly understood the implications of embryology to evolution, Carroll's book is a breathtaking example of previously (perhaps) unimagined insights into evolution that embryology has brought to modern science, much of which has been discovered and expanded upon over the past 20 years.
One of the most important discoveries of Evo Devo is the ancient origin of the genes used to build basic body plans. From fins to legs, fingers, and wings, nature has a tendency to use many of the same basic genes. The fact that a common set of genes is used to form such a wide variety of different body shapes and appendages was unanticipated, and shows the great antiquity of life while illuminating the literal truth of the fundamental thesis of evolution: decent from a common ancestor. The author presents detailed examples and evidence showing the different ways in which ancient - very ancient, in many cases - tool kit genes are used to shape the evolution of animal forms from Urbilateria to Homo sapiens.
A not uncommon misconception is that different features in living organisms require different genes. In this flawed world view there are things like an "elephant trunk gene" and an "intelligence gene." To understand why an elephant looks the way it does and why people are smart (supposedly) you simply need to find the genes that make them unique. Through the science of Evo Devo we've learned that body shapes are determined not simply by what genes are present, but when and how various genes are turned on and off. As the old saying goes: "timing is everything." It's the timing of how genes are activated during development that largely results in the stark physical differences between humans and mice, even though the two species share more than half their genes. As Carroll puts it:
"We have seen that insects, pterosaurs, birds, or bats did not invent "wing" genes (chapter 7), butterflies a "spot" gene (chapter 8), or humans a "bipedalism" gene (chapter 10). Rather, innovation in all of these groups has been a matter of modifying existing structures and of teaching old genes new tricks. The key to innovation at the genetic level is the multifunctionality of too kit genes. The multifunctionality of tool kit genes stems from their deployment at different times and places through batteries of genetic switches. In this manner a protein such as Distal-less can act at one time to promote limb formation, and at another to promote eye-spot development."
Historically, some biologists supposed that different genes would be used for similar solutions in different species. Carroll shows that "this view is entirely incorrect." Much of his book is devoted to showing how a relatively small group of "tool kit" genes is used in many different species to accomplish the same general task. He uses examples from fly legs, mouse feet, and the tube feet of sea urchins. Although these structures look and act in entirely different ways, they are all governed by the distal-less gene. As it turns out, it's not just the genes that determine body shape and function but when and how the genes are tuned on/off during embryological development.
The use of common genes goes beyond development of different structures. Organs that were once thought of as distinctly different, such as eyes and hearts, are now understood to have common genetic ingredients that control their formation. This, Carroll explains "has forced a complete change in our picture of Cambrian animals..." The real lesson here is the great power of combinatorial genetics, and its ability to create vastly more complexity. For example, in a simple case we might imagine four genes, each responsible for a single function. Those same four genes, if used together - in combination - can be responsible for dozens of functions. Quoting Carroll again: "The combinatorial power of the genetic tool kit acting on vast arrays of genetic switches has produced this complexity and diversity [of the natural world]"
This book rates as one of the best I've read in 2006. Carroll is a fine writer and accomplished scientist, and his book offers insight into one of the great developing scientific fields of the 21st century. My copy of the book is hardbound with color prints, as well as many black-and-white figures/drawings that help bring Carroll's writing to life. For anyone fascinated by life and its origins, this is one book you'll definitely want to read.
Endless Forms Most Beautiful: Evo Devo Popularized.......2006-10-31
Despite vast differences in form and function common principles coordinate animal development from a single fertilized egg. Master genes that control development are found across widely divergent species - Drosophila fruit flies and humans share a deep genetic legacy - many of the genes identified as controllers of vertebrate development were originally discovered in these flies.
Multicellular plants and animals are essentially societies of cells that vary in configuration and complexity. Darwinian evolution shaped these multitudinous forms as a result of small changes in offspring and natural selection of those best adapted to their environment. Variation arises from mutations in genes that control how cells in developing embryos behave. This tight linkage between evolution and development lies at the heart of the questions evo devo, shorthand for evolutionary developmental biology, is attempting to answer. Sean B. Carroll is perfectly positioned to explain evo devo, and his comprehensive understanding illuminates "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" The New Science of Evo Devo and the Making of the Animal Kingdom."
When and where genes are expressed determines how animals develop. The control regions of these genes - switches that change existing patterns of gene activity into new patterns - are crucial and a single gene can have many control regions. This flexibility underlies the fact that 95% of genes coding for proteins are similar in humans and mice. Evolution of control regions has made us human - and different from our primate ancestors.
Drosophila is utilized to explain the basic developmental tool kit shared by all animals. Carroll introduces the master Hox genes and intercellular signaling molecules such as proteins specified by hedgehog genes. The economy of signaling proteins utilized during development is also emphasized - the same molecules can be employed multiple times since cells respond differently according to their genetic characteristics and developmental history. Carroll also illustrates how individual animals are made up of similar parts - modular construction plays an important role in evolution. Structures ranging from vertebrae to spots on butterfly wings are artfully presented to drive this point home.
Complex animals arose in the Vendian period (650 - 543 MYA). During the Cambrian (543 - 490 MYA) animals with hard body parts enter the fossil record. Evo devo shows that genes responsible for Cambrian animals were plausibly derived from Vendian precursors. Cambrian arthropod dominance is probably due to Hox genes that specify different body segments and the corresponding appendages that formed their bodies. Carroll explores how the number of distinct appendage types increased - the relative shifting of Hox genes could have lead to the ancestral biramous (forked) limb that eventually diversified into structures ranging from gills to wings.
Butterfly spots are a beautiful and clever example of evolutionary tinkering. Each spot appears to evolve its shape, color and size independently of other elements. Evolution has tinkered not only with the qualities of each spot, but with the making of the spot itself. Carroll's group discovered that at the center of each spot the gene Distal-less - a key gene controlling the distal development of appendages such as insect limbs - is expressed and initiates spot development.
Carroll also addresses creationists - the bizarre bibliolaters who think Flintstones reruns on late night TV are documentaries - by pointing out the importance of evolution and evo devo to science and human knowledge in general. The PR campaign known as Intelligent Design is similarly debunked as irreducibly insipid. Science is full of mysteries, that is why there are still employment opportunities for scientists.
After reading this important book try From DNA to Diversity: Molecular Genetics and the Evolution of Animal Design by Sean B. Carroll, Grenier, and Weatherby for a more detailed discussion or The Plausibility of Life: Resolving Darwin's Dilemma by Kirschner and Gerhart - who introduce "facilitated variation" based on evo devo insights to explain the evolution of complexity and novelty.
The mechanics of evolution.......2006-10-31
The main title of the book comes from the final paragraph of Darwin's "Origins of Species". This is quite appropriate as this book is a great add-on to original classic of biology. The book begins with a history of evolutionary thought, and shows how the spread of genetics has helped to support, or refute, evolutionary thought. The book then introduces the reader to evo - devo; or evolutionary development. In essence, the development of an embryo can be used to track the evolution of that particular species. The author expounds on this by first explaining the science of genetics, how genes are used to generate proteins, how specific genes are expressed or not expressed in an organism, how the embryo develops, and how the artificial (by man) manipulation of genes affects the development of an embryo into a different organism. The author then focuses on specific examples to illustrate evo devo in progress. These include wings, spots, black skin due to melanin, and the hominid skull. The author concludes the book by showing how evo devo can be used in the debate of creationism versus evolution.
Overall, a great book. There are multiple images and color figures that helps to explain the concepts explained in the text. I only give it four out of five stars as there is no commentary on how applicable is evo devo to plants, protists, fungi and other types of organisms. For evo devo to be an accurate tool to explain how evolution occur, it must apply to all organisms, and not just animals.
