Amazing!!.......2007-07-30
Wow...if you love this type of music...and love the piano...than this is definitely the book for you... Not only is the music strikingly beautiful...but the arrangements are modern enough to be really fun to play... A must buy for anyone who just enjoys playing the piano just to play...
I Love it!.......2007-05-04
I'm a big Phantom fan and haven't been as committed as I should have with my piano playing before I bought the book. Afterward, I have improved my sight reading and have bought other books to challenge myself. I have found that if I really want to learn a piece I will rise to the occassion even if the music is slightly more difficult than what I am accustomed to. I truly recommend this book to anyone!!
happy piano student.......2007-03-12
I teach piano, and I have a student who is obsessed with Phantom, so I purchased this for her, and I can't get her to stop practicing she loves it so much. The arrangements are challeging and have pushed her sightreading, but I still think it was a great choice. I enjoyed the pictures as well.
Great Book!!!.......2007-01-05
This is not the "simple" version, though with practice, it's not too difficult. I would not recommend this book for a beginner; but for an occasional player, the music is easy enough to call up on occasion. The songs don't have that 'empty' sound like many songs transposed from orchestra to piano and, in my opinion, you could play them for an audience and receive applause.
Good edition.......2007-01-04
I hate The Phantom of the Opera and Andrew Lloyd Webber's music in general, but my voice students love it, especially "Think of Me." Unlike some editions I've seen, this edition has the cadenza from the recording. It's also beautifully bound and presented. If I have to have Lloyd Webber music in my library, at least it's a good edition.

Book Description
The novel that inspired the Lon Chaney film and the hit musical. "The wildest and most fantastic of tales."--New York Times Book Review.
Customer Reviews:
Wow. This is really a bad book........2007-04-10
No seriously.
I had the highest expectation for this experience. But the story is a mess.
It's episodic to the point of distraction. The point of view changes randomly. At one point it's a confession, or a "verbal account". Then it is a written account from a character hardly seen in the first 70% of the story. To say the characters are weakly developed is an insult to...uh...weak people. The language is occasionally witty, but often repetitive and uninteresting.
The best part of the novel is the epilogue, which gives details of the Phantom's origins, all of which are FAR more interesting than the contents of the book. I also loved a bit about the real Opera House that came with my Easton Press copy.
I loved the stage musical, I loved the old films, I liked the new film...this was extremely disappointing.
Excellent story.......2007-03-08
This is a very gripping, interesting story. I would especially recommend it to "Phantom" fans who would like to learn the background of the characters.
Brilliant!.......2007-02-18
Often times mentioning "The Phantom of the Opera" ellicits snickers from theatre purists who see the musical as a somewhat ridiculously overblown slightly stupid story which all seems too far fetched to be taken seriously. I confess, I first fell in love with the story when I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber's rendition of the show (which I've seen about five times now) - a show which I now realize that if taken by itself, tends to be a somewhat ridiculously overblown slightly stupid story which seems too far fetched to be taken seriously. The original book changes everything.
Not only does the book contain the story of Erik, the Opera Ghost, but it also includes some of Leroux's own research into the story which he claims as true. Not only does he make this somewhat extrodinary claim to the truth of the story, but he in rather fine detail shows how there was really nothing supernatural at all about the story: even the seeming supernatural elements all have simple solutions: many of which Leroux himself found the 'keys' to while doing research for the book.
The book blows the musical away. Like sand-blasting a soup craker. But before I say more I will say that the musical picks up on many of the important parts of the book: that is to say, I would recommend reading the book and getting to know the story well, because then even though the musical only picks up on many of the important parts and not all, you'll know the rest of the story: and suddenly the musical won't be a somewhat ridiculously overblown slightly stupid story which seems too far fetched to be taken seriously - it's actually very believable.
Admittedly, it would have been far too difficult to make the entire story into a musical: but let me whet your appetite for the fuller details of this incredible love story by touching on a few of the most important difference between the book and the musical.
1. One of the most important characters from the book is gone from the musical. The very mysterious character called simply "The Persian" is not only Erik's one confidant in the book, but he also serves as a link between Erik and other people involved in the Opera. In the musical, Madam Giry represents both her role in the book, and The Persian. (I.e., in the musical, Madam Giry leads Raoul down to Erik's home under the Opera House: in the book, it's actually The Persian who does).
2. There is yet another character, simply called "A Shade" who also appears breifly in the book...a brief part, but actually quite dark.
3. Erik's brilliance as a ventriloquist is lost in the musical but fully explained and examined in the book
4. The most intriging part of the book, Erik's six-mirrored 'tourture chamber' - a major part of the story and a powerful demonstration of Erik's brilliance as a fearsome foe is completely missing from the musical.
This is easily my favourite book that I've ever read, and I recommend it to people all the time. Read it and enjoy it!
Help.......2007-01-10
This answers things I did not understand from the movie. It is hard to imagine how ugly the Phantom is supposed to be because there is no way to Make Gerard Butler ugly. The problem with a handsom, sexy Phantom is that it is hard to understand why Christine didn't chose him. But the book does show the Phantom's great love for Christine. The story is hard to follow sometimes but hang in there because it is a fairly good story.
WOW!.......2007-01-06
Since I was about 6 years old, I've had all the music memorized from the broadway musical 'Phantom of the Opera', and maybe a year or two later I saw the silent version of the film... terrifying! I think that the phantom from the silent film lived under my bed for several years.... he still might, and maybe a year or two after that I saw the version with Nelson Eddy in it.But when I finally got around to reading this book just this year, I was astounded! I didn't expect for it to be such a good read... it was a page-turner, and I already knew the outcome! As I turned every page, I kept saying to myself: why haven't I ever read this before? I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. So this is why they call it a classic...

Customer Reviews:
great film!.......2007-10-03
I love the story. It is very interesting. Other people might love the story as well; It has a different version on what is the actual opera show has; and that makes the story more successful. I love the whole side of the story.... the characters, the set-ups, the pacing and the musics. Being a phantom opera fan, I am not disappointed. Well, infact the directors and the whole cast was very amazing. The story captures the all the things you cannot imagine on the phantom of the opera alone. I will always love the movie....
EXCELLENT.......2007-08-11
I cannot say enough about this book. If you loved the movie version of POTO than this is a MUST for you. IT goes into the history of the story and right up to the movie made in 2004. I've turned mine into a scrapbook. I've printed out pictures from the movie off the internet and have included them in many of the pages here. If you especially liked Gerard Butler as the Phantom...buy it!! You will not be sorry.
Very enjoyable...nice addition to your collection........2007-03-24
Being a die-hard phan (as most of you reading this probably are as well), I devour nearly anything related to our man in the mask. After seeing (and totally loving!) the 2004 movie with Gerard Butler, I bought this companion book as soon as possible. It contains very interesting background information from the Phantom's beginnings in the G. Leroux novel, continuing through almost every incarnation of him up to and including the 2004 movie. It was nice to read so much background detail. The last part of this book contains the screenplay. Before ordering this book, I had thought this section would read as more of a "novel" of the movie rather than a movie script itself, so I was a bit disappointed by that. The text is a little choppy at times, but it is interesting nonetheless and provides certain insights you cannot know simply from watching the movie. I would say this book is more of the fluffy, "coffee-table" material for casual reading. Very pretty throughout - nice pictures - an overall good addition to any phan's collection.
Fabulous book to accompany a fabulous story.......2007-02-01
This book is a must-have for any Phantom of the Opera fan. The Complete Phantom of the Opera by George Perry is more detailed on the story behind the musical, but as an updated version that includes info and pictures from the movie, this book is essential to any true "Phan".
A Phantom Memory.......2007-01-05
A must have book for anyone who loved the movie or the play. I have seen both ways and enjoyed the book just as much. This was a wonderful ensight into how the movie was made and all the work to make the movie possible.

Customer Reviews:
The Phoenix of the Opera A real eye opener of a story.......2007-08-28
You can settle in for an exciting tale that picks up exactly where the stage and movie version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA ends and takes you on the most heart twisting and nerve tingling narrative of Erik, and all the people that came into his life before and after the original story.
Sadie Montgomery has woven a believable, moving story that makes these characters live and breathe on the printed page and you will want it to go on and on as you get more involved in the moods, dangers, joys and romance that she puts before you. Erik becomes alive, you can feel, sense and know his pain, longing, joys and triumphs as he faces life away from the security and solitude of the now ruined Opera House. You will come away from reading this book satisfied, yet eagerly awaiting Sadies next book. A wonderful book to cherish.../Scottish Rose
Eriks story is just beginning! .......2007-07-21
After watching the Phantom of the Opera for probably the 20th time, I longed for more. I needed for the story to continue and I received it with this book. Ms. Montgomery has captured the heart and soul of the Phantom in my opinion! From the first page, I was completely captivated! Her writing style is beautiful! With such a busy life style, I couldnt put this book down, and after just 2 days I was finished. I cant wait to read the next novel as I am sure it will be just as captivating as this one! Thank you so much Sadie!
Phantastic!!!!.......2007-07-09
This book was amazing! It was very easy to read, very fast paced, never a dull moment. I really could not put in down and read it in one sitting. This book was true to the characters, you actually can beleive this is what happened to them. A definite must read!!!
Eric Lives!.......2007-07-06
I am a big POTO fan and couldn't wait to read this book. I was not disappointed! It was not only a great read, but the storyline kept me enthralled! I've read several "sequels" to Phantom, but this one is by far the best. I can't wait for next edition!
LOOKING FORWARD TO BOOK 2.......2007-06-15
When i saw the summary of this book i thought this version of sequel is just what i have been looking for and hope it lived up to my expectation and true indeed i thoroughly enjoyed the book. This book was able to hold my attention non-stop such that i finished the book in a day.
However, the only thing i didn't like about it is that its based on the 2004 movie which i felt a little pale in comparison to the actual musical as there are a lot of parts which i throughly enjoyed which was changed or removed in it.But nonetheless i await to uncover what richness lies in the following books after this i hope they will be as good as the first book if not better.

Star Wars owes a lot to its details. George Lucas made his world so believable and compelling by getting all the little things right, whether it was a chip in Vader's helmet or the sand on a Stormtrooper's boots. Of course, this feat was no accident--extensive conceptual planning and design went into all the Star Wars movies, perhaps most so for Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This excellent "insider story" art book by Phantom Menace researcher Jonathan Bresman pulls together a wealth of these preliminary paintings, sketches, and computer animatics. Starting in early 1995, the Episode I art team sweated out nearly four years in a renovated attic at Skywalker Ranch, and Bresman's book gives an eye-popping account of their efforts, a sweeping survey of the movie's "evolutionary record," what Bresman calls "the unseen art that serves as the foundation for the film."
Divided into sections covering each of the movie's major locales (e.g., Theed, Coruscant, Otoh Gunga), The Art of Phantom Menace gives detailed illustrations of many of the creatures, structures, and vessels that made the final cut to film. But even more interesting are those that never left the sketchbook or hard drive--what fan wouldn't want to see a bulky, bipedal droideka or Padmé's horned, reptilian "swamp horse"? Call-outs alongside the art reveal the untold story behind many characters, like how Jedi Council member Yaddle really did begin as a sketch of a young Yoda, and how Jar Jar at one point had a wacky "dog" sidekick named Blarf. (Lucas and crew thankfully dodged that bullet.) --Paul Hughes

Forward by Doug Chiang. This volume (48 pages) contains an excerpt from the book written by Jonathan Bresman. It also contains concept sketches, storyboards and full color illustrations by various artists, among them Doug Chiang, depicting scenes and characters from the movie Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
From the preface: " This book offers a behind-the-scenes look at the lengths the art department went in its construction of George Lukas' universe. The evolutionary stages for each major character, vehicle, and planet are displayed so that the reader can get a sense of how the film was painstakingly sculpted, and finally, how a new style of filmmaking was founded."
This excerpt focuses on how sketches combine and evolve in the development of ideas into the final concepts for characters and other elements in the film.
Staple bound. A Del Ray Book; Ballantine Publishing Group.
Beware this is the 44 page excerpt book.......2006-12-31
Sellers are using this page to sell a book that is actually titled: THE ART OF STAR WARS EPISODE I: an excerpt of the book written by Jonathan Bresman. The ISBN matches this work, which is only 44 pages in length and was given away with the purchase of a VHS version of the Phantom Menace. The way Amazon lists this book can be misleading because they refer to it as the paperback edition in the review which claims it is a massive volume with over 600 illustrations. They are actually referring to another edition of the book... the TRADE PAPERBACK EDITION. This error has caused me a lot of fuss with two of the used book traders here at Amazon. Know that you are not buying the 200+ page oversize work with this webpage.
A veritable art-gallery by master conceptual artists.......2004-05-05
I would never have thought that I would stoop so low in nerd-dom and buy a book like this, but there is more to being a nerd than simply obsessing over your favorite fantasies.
I love Star Wars, hate the Phantom Menace. And yet way back when the VHS release was going on, I too crowded into a Media Play at 12 in the morning with my buddy and his wife to get my advanced Widescreen Collector's copy. DVD has since come and taken away any significance to that item, but what did come along with it was a little booklet featuring excerpts from "The Art of Star Wars; Episode I." For a long time this little booklet and I rarely parted, and I thought I was so priviledged to have this particular booklet and that it would one day be a rarity.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered THIS book, the actual Art of Star Wars. Not only does it have everything in my booklet, but it presents conceptual art from all corners of the movie. There's so much to look at, and so much that is fascinating to look at, you can't help spend hours just looking.
The book is hard-bound, with pages made from such high-quality paper, it will make you turn them with tweezers, they feel so expensive. The art is presented in chronological order with the film, so that reading it cover-to-cover is almost like watching the film. For most of the artwork, a little background information is provided in the corner next to a numerical key denoting which works belong to which artists.
As for the quality of reproduction; I am rarely satisfied when something I've drawn is scanned onto a color-copier, which often is the best option for reproducing them. I still lose something in the translation from pad to paper, a little bit of hue here, some shading here, depth of line there. However, in this book there is nothing lost. (Nothing is lost, or the originals must be stunning to look at!) The artwork shows you just why the movie relies so much on visuals (and not on strength of character or plot). Artists Doug Chiang, Ian McCaig, and Terry Whitlatch to name a few, are so skilled at vividness, their works immediately juice your imagination into action. Looking at concepts for space-ships, you can almost hear them fly.
The emphasis is on Doug Chiang and Ian McCaig, one a brilliant architectural and mechanical artist, the other a genius at characters and costumes. Whitlatch seems to handle most of the aliens, while gorgeous matte-paintings by Doug Chiang depict, in color, some of the more finalised concepts.
If you are a fan of Star Wars, this book is a must for any in-depth knowledge of how things developed behing the scenes. For film scholars, I would also recommend this book, for the glimpse it provides into the realm of pre-production, especially for you film scholars who have never set foot onto a film studio, or a design office.
For fellow artists, I can only say that these works inspire to improve my technique and work even harder at my art. It's always the test of an artist when he runs into someone who is superior; does the work make you want to quit art, or make you want to improve? This stuff will make you choose the latter.
No McQuarrie, and yet an awesome art of Star Wars Book.......2003-01-22
I loved the art Ralph McQuarrie did for the first three Star Wars movies, and in the Art of Episode I, Doug Chiang takes the torch and does an awesome job. His grand scale works are so appealing and detailed, I loved it.
The character concept work in intriguing, there is a lot of evolutionary type paintings which I like a lot. The Sith work is fascinating.
The one draw back to the book was the lack of explaination each work had. I would have liked more insight as to what the artist was thinking, what Lucas liked and what he disliked. That wasn't in this version as much as I would have liked. But overall, one to own.
katcat loves the art of episode 1!.......2002-12-25
This book is simply wonderful for Star Wars fans and artist alike. Just try it-you`ll love it! Who could ask for more-colorful, wonderful Star Wars creatures and livly artwork!Eureka Springs Ar

This is the lavishly illustrated, definitive account of The Phantom of the Opera, tracing the Phantom legend from its origins in historical fact through Gaston Leroux's heartrending classic novel and other artistic incarnations to the present day and Andrew Lloyd Webber's incredibly successful musical.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-01-10
Loads of beautiful photos and lots of info. I love it. We do need and expanded edition to cover the movie. This is for Phantom Fans.
A very good book!!!.......2006-08-10
This a must have for any phans of the A.L.W. musical!!
Clearly, my dears, this IS the book for you........2006-01-11
This book... I have no words on how amazing it is.
When I rekindled my love for musicals, and of course, Phantom of the Opera made that happened... I had to get everything and learn everything about Phantom. So I found this book at the library and I went insane over it.
Firstly, it gives a clear background history on Gaston Leroux--the writer and the creator of Phantom of the Opera. Then, it goes into another section when talking about the films it inspired. You'll be surprised and amazed when you see it and read about it. Not only that, it tells you some small tidbit facts on the actors and actresses of these movies.
And then, my favorite part, it goes into the Lloyd Webber musical. And when I say "goes into" I mean it!! There are so many pictures of the Original London Cast it's phenominal! There ares ome behind the scenes pictures as well. I never seen so many pictures about Phantom sure in a book, ever.
And when you think that's enough, there is a libretto of the stage production--including scrafito'ed pictures of the OLC copied in there as it was when the CD/Cassette first made it's debut.
All in all, it's not clearly updated as it is now, there is mention of the movie and who they want in it. But otherwise, if you are a London Cast or simply a Phantom obsessionist, you MUST have this book. If you find it at a house sale, a junk pile, book sale... whatever... BUY IT. You will not be dissapointed!!
An absolute MUST to buy!!.......2005-02-02
I recently purchased both 'The Complete Phantom of the Opera'and the novel, and I am soo impressed! After I saw the movie and bought the soundtrack, I knew that I had to have these books. My interst in the Phantom of the Opera was first sparked when I saw the silent version with Lon Cheney. Then I heard about the movie coming out, so I saw it and I was more than impressed. I still have yet to see the Broadway version however. So, I highly recommend the movie, the soundtrack and the books. In my opinion each is well worth the cost!!

Phantom of the Opera is great !.......2007-10-02
This music is definitely for piano players who like easier arrangements. The songs can be played easily and include all the most popular songs in the musical. I really love mine.
THIS IS THE 'EASY PIANO' VERSION, NOT THE FULL SCORE.......2007-08-28
MUSICIANS TAKE NOTE!!! If you look at the TOP RIGHT CORNER of the image supplied with this item, you will see the little blue lettering that says, "EASY PIANO".
THIS IS THE ONLY INDICATION THAT THIS IS THE 'EASY PIANO' BOOK VERSION!!! SOMEWHERE IN THE DESCRIPTION IT SHOULD SAY THIS CLEARLY, BUT IT DOES NOT!
If you enjoy the music of "Phantom" and are a beginning pianist, you will get a great deal out of this book. However, if you have been playing for more than a few years, DO NOT ORDER THIS BOOK. It lacks the beauty and complexity of the music the way Andrew Lloyd Weber intended it, and is a poor replacement for my original battered "Broadway Score" book.
Didn't say Easy Piano..........2007-08-28
I ordered this book off of amazon since I've been wanting it for awhile and it was a lot cheaper than it is other places. I was very excited when it arrived only to be disappointed that it was the easy piano version. I skimmed over the pages and noticed that all the songs (from what I saw) were in the key of C major. While this is a very good book for beginners, I wanted the more advanced book. I may have missed it, but I usually check each item on the site very carefully before ordering, so I'm not sure how this happened. Just a warning for anyone who is not aware of this.
Easy piano book, not vocal seletions.......2007-05-12
The way this product is advertised in the description is a bit misleading. I was expecting the vocal selections and not an easy piano book.
Though this book might be great for a beginner, it is definitely not what I was expecting. Amazon might want to consider making this description and title a bit clearer to avoid future confusion.
VERY SIMPLE MUSIC.......2007-03-12
Be aware that is book is very, very simple music. It is not stated in the description of the book. If you are looking for anything past beginner level music, you will be disappointed.

Book Description
Sometimes in life you have to risk everything. She left him a broken man teetering on the brink of madness. He had fully expected to remain in that condition for the rest of his life. But one night, in a dark and filthy alley, fate sent him another reason to hope. In the midst of his deepest despair, he found a purpose far greater than himself and in the process discovered the true meaning of happiness. And now, with his heart again dreaming, he had a plan; a plan that would give him a life beyond his wildest fantasies. But there were three things standing in his way; the police who hunted him, the Russians he would steal from, and the man he had sworn to kill.

Into the Dark.......2007-08-12
A truly disappointing tale. Instead of Erik seeking a new life, the author has him plunging into the world he needs to leave---murder, thievery and deception! I believe a great disservice to phans and Erik has been done here. The author has failed to do primary research on Paris, let alone on beloved characters. The reference to Gaston Laroux was badly executed, the writing style left me totaly cold and unsympathetic to everyone, and if this is a follow-up to the movie, I did not see a glimpse anywhere of the wonderful actors who portrayed their roles with such brilliance. Perhaps Ms. Whitehead needs to see the film a few more times, as well as the play. While I fully accept that we all have our own version of Erik and various events, this particular story need not be counted into the millieu.
My favorite.......2007-08-11
This so far is my favorite sequel to the POTO. I really enjoyed this one. I could see Erik being just like the author wrote him. I loved it!!
For Those Who Enjoy Non-E/C POTO Fics.......2007-08-04
"My fury still burned, but began to cool as I realized the depth of his despair. For it must surely be despair that drove him to search for me alone, knowing the risks he took with his life by doing so... He knew that it was not over. He knew that as long as I lived, Christine would never fully belong to him.... At that moment I wanted nothing so much as the pleasure of filling his every waking and sleeping awareness with the prospect of my imminent return." Pg. 56
But he doesn't.
"....Nothing could change the facts. Christine was married. If she had not been lost to me before, she certainly was now. That I loved her was certain. That I was not what she needed in her life was equally as sure. I gathered myself up from the seat determined to put this pain behind me yet again. I had lost count of the times I had reached this same conclusion over the previous months. One day, I would succeed in banishing the agony for good." Pg. 194
And succeed, he does.
As you may have guessed, this is NOT an E/C phic - far from it. In fact, outside of a very brief account of Erik's memory of his making love to Christine the night he'd taken her to his lair, Christine is only mentioned two or three times throughout the rest of the book. Raoul is depicted only briefly and in a very unflattering light. When I realized this, I honestly didn't want to finish the book.
But finish it, I did despite my huge disappointment and the obvious fact that in this book, Erik never sees Christine again.
Banished from his home underneath the Opera House, now a hunted man and plagued by recurring dreams of his lost love, Christine, Erik lives underneath the city in one of the many tunnels that traverse the Parisian sub-terrain.
One night as he clandestinely roams the streets in search for food, he comes across what he initially perceives as a fight in one of the alleyways. He gets a glimpse of the perpetrator as he flees the scene. For some reason, Erik decides "to see what was left of the loser of this battle." When he comes across the unfortunate victim, he is shocked to discover that the loser is a youth. Filled with pity (and remorse that he had not interfered in the fight when he had the chance), he wraps the boy in his cloak and takes him to his home in the tunnels.
When he tends to the child's injuries in the safety of his den, he's sickened to discover the extent of those injuries. And when he changes the boy's filthy clothes, he's shocked when he detects that the child is not a boy after all, but is a girl, and that the man who had attacked her had not only beaten her, but starved and raped her as well. Determined to take care of her, Erik secures one of the youths of the street to contact his old friend, Mme Giry, in hopes that she will help him procure the supplies that he will need so that he can, hopefully, nurse her back to health.
Two days later, after the girl has awakened, Erik meets his match in a charming, yet precocious 8-year old who ultimately changes his life forever. For after their encounter when she accidentally drops and breaks his precious music box, he realizes that this child has touched his heart. And he makes one of several vows that alter his destiny: "She would never again know the pain of an angry hand on her body. She would never again suffer abuse in any form from any man. She would be happy, cared for, loved. I would see to it. And I, for the first time in my life would have a sense of purpose beyond myself; and perhaps, just perhaps, I would be happy as well."
The remainder of the book entails the formulation and execution of the plans that Erik uses to secure for himself and his new family a home and the prospect for a happy future. And in so doing, he also secures new friendships and relationships that he acquires in the process.
Despite my disappointment that this was not an E/C fic, I do have to credit the author with a very unique and imaginative sequel for the Phantom. It is well written and the author must have done an extensive amount of research to write this book. I certainly applaud her efforts on a job well done. It is fast-paced and holds your interest.
Erik is the Erik we would want him to be - strong and compassionate, brave and protective, cunning and loving. The little girl is also a charmer with a sad story to tell, yet she is amazingly perceptive and strong for one so young. She is also a musical prodigy in a different way than what Christine had been.
I don't want to say anymore because I don't want to give away the whole plot of the book for those who are interested in reading it. Erik's plans and his vow to revenge the man who nearly killed the little girl are what save him from himself, but how he does it and the cast of characters that ultimately become involved are what make this book so intriguing.
There are, however, several things that bothered me (outside of the E/C thing) - There are quite a few misspellings and typos throughout the book, and many quotation marks that were either missing or inserted where they didn't belong. I found that rather surprising in a published book. Don't ALL published books get edited? The Opera House was referred to as the "Opera Populaire", and the characters, Andre and Firmin, were mentioned (but only once) near the beginning of the book. Don't these refer to the Webber stage play/movie? I thought these were not supposed to be used in published works?
And lastly: The title of the novel, "Into the Light", implies that Erik has a complete change of heart. One would expect that along with his change of heart would come a change in behavior, too. In fact, the changes in him (considering his past and his notorious, seemingly uncaring proclivity to commit crimes to achieve what he wants) are nothing short of amazing. Yet the steps he takes in order to secure that new life include murder and the theft of stolen goods. Didn't anyone else notice the irony in this?
Very good book........2007-04-06
I haven't yet finished reading this book but I'm throughly enjoying it because the author seem to be very perceptive as to the personality of the Phantom. It's a wonderful story, seems very realistic as to what the Phantom would have done after leaving the Opera House. And she gives him a personality that I feel is the true Phantom. Hopefully she will write another book on the Phantom! I've read ever book on the Phantom that I can find, and if the readers liked Susan Kays' book, they will like this book.
horribly written.......2007-04-04
I bought this item because it seemed more interesting than descriptions of other published Phantom fanfic. However, it's so poorly written that I couldn't bring myself to finish it, an unusual occurrence for me. Make sure that you can preview a questionable novel in a bookstore prior to buying it online, or be prepared to eat the cost of expensive trade paperbacks.

Very cool pop up.......2005-05-18
I bought this pop up over the internet because I really liked the movie and decided to collect Phantom stuff. Really cool pop up book.
The first pop up scene in this book is the Hannibal rehersal. The chandelier pops up on the top and theres a tab and if you pull it the dancers will dance around the stage.
The second pop up scene Madame Giry and the ballet girs are practicing while in the other room when you pull the tab you'll see the phantom in the mirror and Christine terrified at the sight.
The third pop up scene is the Masquerade scene. You'll see everyone singing, and if you pull the tab the Phantom will appear disguised as the Red Death.
The fourt and last pop up are set in the Phantom's lair(did I spelled it right) The Phantom is sitting on his chair and Christine and Raoul are on the boat, if you pull both of the tabs the Phantom's theme song will play and the candle lights will turn on.
A really cool pop up book, but For some reason prices have rise up and this book has become really expensive, try to purchase this book as cheap as possible, because even thought is a really nice book is not worth paying $40 to $155 for it. Just to finish up I highly reccomend this book to fans of the musical since the pop ups are based on the musical stage designs.

Book Description
One of the world's most beloved stories as it has never been told before, Unmasqued is a novel of breathtaking historical erotica.
His exquisite obsession...
Christine Daaé heard rumors of the hideous Phantom said to haunt the great Opera House in 19th-century Paris. But its youngest and brightest star knows something no one else does-the truth. For in the darkness she thrills to the deep velvet timbre of his arousing voice, and quivers to the soft strokes of his leather-gloved fingers. He is real. Her inspiration. Her Ange de Musique. Her liberator.
Her erotic awakening...
Condemned to the catacombs below, Erik has desired his obsession from the shadows, careful to keep his identity, and his secret, in the dark. Only he understands Christine's extraordinary talents and her beauty. Only he can pleasure her like no man has before. But his sensual power comes with a price-and a risk to everyone who stands between them. For Christine too is succumbing to her most forbidden and dangerous desires-and to the Phantom who's making them all come true.
Customer Reviews:
Leroux is probably doing flip-flops in his grave w/this one.......2007-09-30
The backdrop falls too close to Carlotta, the prima donna, during the dress rehearsal of the Paris Opera House's performance of Roméo et Juliette. Enraged, Carlotta storms off the set refusing to perform and the new managers, Monsieurs Richard and Moncharmin, are in a quandary. It so happens that their new patron, the Comte Philippe de Chagny and his brother are expected to attend that night's performance. Carlotta couldn't have walked out at a worse time.
But Mme Maude Giry, the head ballet instructor, suggests that they allow Christine, one of the chorus girls, to sing in Carlotta's stead as Christine has been taking lessons from a very good teacher over the past 6 months and her ability is exceptional. The managers, seemingly with no other alternative, encourage the 17-year-old ingenue to audition for them. At the conclusion of the audition, the managers smile. They are confident that young Christine Daae will be a success.
For Christine, that night's performance is a dream come true, not only for her, but for her ange as well, for he has been the one who's been instructing her in secret, although she has never seen his face. After the performance, she meets with her childhood friend, Raoul - the Comte's younger brother - who she hasn't seen since she was a little girl. He invites her to accompany him and his brother to dinner. While Christine is happy to see Raoul again and feels safe with him, she feels strangely uncomfortable with his older brother.
According to the Biographer's Note before the story begins, this is the true story of The Phantom of the Opera, as was found in the personal diaries of Christine Daae. Exactly how said biographer happened to obtain these diaries is not mentioned. While the biographer claims that she initially intended to keep the diaries private, she ultimately decided to expose them to the world "in all fairness to Christine and Erik". According to her, ever since M. Leroux had written his original novel, Erik has been unjustly "portrayed as a murderous villain, Christine as the helpless, manipulated ingenue, and the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny as the brave, love-struck swain." The author suspects this was done "in order to protect the reputation, and influence, of the Chagny family."
Without revealing the entire plot of the story - for those who may wish to read it - it turns out that Comte Philippe de Chagny is the actual villain. The where, how, and why he's the real villain I'll leave to your reading pleasure (or displeasure, as the case may be).
This is not merely another rendering of The Phantom of the Opera but it is also the erotic version of The Phantom of the Opera. I have nothing against erotica, per se, as a well-told love story with subtle erotic inferences can make for some enjoyable reading. But for me, a little bit of erotica goes a long way. As with most novels of this nature, they tend to cross the very fine line between the sensual and the sickening - and this novel does just that with the turn of a page.
Outside of two stimulating love scenes between Erik and Christine (but I will warn you, the sex is very graphic in both), the rest is just sex for the sake of sex. Christine is in a perpetual state of arousal as the three main male characters vie for her body. You see a side of Maude Giry and Carlotta that Gaston Leroux wouldn't have dared penned in his novel. The remainder of the so-called diaries would make fine fodder for the BDSM community. Needless to say, the biographer's Afterward is about as unbelievable as her Forward.
According to the same biographer, she also managed to obtain the journals of a certain Mercédès Herrera. Her next novel shall impart "a much different and accurate chronicle about what occurred during the years of Dantès' imprisonment, and what really happened when he came back to Paris as the wealthy, learned, and powerful Count of Monte Cristo." Something tells me I don't want to know.
About the Author: "Colette Gale is the pseudonym of a historical novelist."
I don't believe it.
A fun, freaky erotic retelling..........2007-09-20
Before you run out and buy this book, it's important to note one very distinguishing factor of this story: it is erotica. As such, you can expect a lot of sex. Kinky sex. Sex that involves biting and being pushed up against walls.
Now, for those of you who automatically assume that I'm insulting everyone's intelligence with such a disclaimer, I can only say, you might be surprised. Many readers seem to confuse erotica and romance. Unmasqued is not a froofy frolick through the daisies, but an intense and decadent romp through the opera house...naked.
Admittedly, I am not terribly familiar with Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera--it's been collecting dust on my bookshelves for at least ten years--nor am I terribly familiar with any of the written retellings and musical versions. In this case, perhaps, it's an advantage for me as I'm able to approach the tale of Christine Daaé and her opera ghost, Erik, with fresh eyes.
Christine is a performer in the Paris Opera House, and Erik is the disfigured outcast forced to disguise himself as a ghost to protect his identity and his livelihood. In the midst of his residence, he discovers and tutors the lovely Christine. As a result, Christine gains great acclaim as an opera singer and the two form an unbreakable bond and an irrevocable attraction...a love full of physical passion, emotional connection and surrounded by turmoil. Problems really begin when the vicompte and compte become intertwined in Christine's life and begin to vie for her, body and soul.
In the past I've found myself with the opportunity to review short works of erotica, so I was especially excited when my signed copy of Unmasqued, in all its novel-length glory, bounded through my door. Colette Gale certainly has a way with the titilating in this novel as the story itself is brimming with passion, and the sex scenes are dripping with intensity and creativity. Perhaps I'm easy to please, but I was especially impressed with Gale's ability to pen sex scenes that ring true of the time period. That is to say, there were no "quivering members" or any of those other dreadful euphemisms, but more period-friendly language to describe the erotic acts. I never felt as if I were tossed into the middle of Penthouse Letters in a mask and a cape.
While many a reviewer seems perterbed by Gale's license with the story, I can only see that this work is well-rounded in its own right and a really good time to read. I love that she's taken a classic and turned it completely on its head, but I'm a sucker for reinvention.
While the story is not without its flaws--it gets a bit repetitive and outlandish toward the end--overall, I can't complain much at all. And I can certainly give Ms. Gale my highest honor in assuring one and all that I would pick up and review her next novel, Master--an erotic retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo--in a heartbeat
Erotic Tale of a Classic that Unmasks the True Tale.......2007-09-20
Colette Gale "Unmasks" the true underlying sensuality of the Phantom of the Opera story in this splendid erotic version of the beloved classic. It was not until the most recent movie release that the sensuality of the story slightly came through. Now with Ms. Gale's erotic version, fans of the classic story can now move past the basic love story of Christine Daae's struggle with her "puppy love-type" attraction to Raoul, Viscomte De Chagny and her "sensual love" for Erik, her Angel of Music.
Ms. Gale's newest erotic version is a delight which steams with passion and many erotic scenes. It is not a version to be read by those who enjoy the story clean and sweet and are a bit squeamish about reading erotica. For the fan who has fantasized about the reality of what would have truly happened if Christine really followed her heart and sensual nature, those fans and readers will find this version to be more reality based and will thoroughly enjoy the sensuality that was felt to be left behind in other versions.
Ms. Gale's beginning biographer's notes and afterward explains how much of the historical research for this book came from Christine Daae's personal diaries. Earlier versions of the story seem to skim the true reality of the time, as ladies of the theatre and opera lost their virginity at young ages and many had protectors. Men of the aristocratic classes during the historical era, in which the story takes place, were not known to marry an opera star or actor, but rather those women who could bring money, lands, and prestige to the family name.
"An Erotic Novel of The Phantom of the Opera" is a unique and spellbinding book that should not be missed by those who are fans of historical erotic romance. Well-written and researched, I look forward to Ms. Gale's next erotic work on The Count of Monte Cristo.
Lush and dark........2007-09-20
This is a big story, with big-story elements. Betrayal, revenge, sacrifice and romantic ambivalence. The sex scenes are fabulously dirty. I don't pick up erotica to read sweet sex. That's what sexy romances are for. If you're looking for B&D, threesomes, and (ahem) alternatives to [...] sex, then this is the book for you. I see a lot of people loved Madame Guiry. I agree -- great character!
While not all erotica is dark, enough of it is (probably 80%) that I'm surprised to see quite a few reviewers expressing shock. Someone compared this to Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" series, and while I think that's pretty close, I wouldn't even say this is that dark.
If you're looking for a romantic, sweet take on the Phantom of the Opera, you might want to look somewhere else. If you're a dirty girl looking for a book to make you wet, here it is -- mask and all.
Distasteful.......2007-09-20
I love POTO and Erik is one of my favorite characters to read about. I am addicted to FanFiction phics and read them all the time. Plus, I own all the books on this list and have loved everyone of them. Just not this book.
IMOP, Erotica to me is exploring ones own sensuality and sexuality, not exploiting sex and seeing it as way to get what you want. I was invisioning soft core sex, not the hard core sex that was on display here.
It took away from the characters I have come to love and turned them into porn stars. I don't think I can ever read about Mme Giry w/o thinking of she and Firman. What a travesty to her very lovely, attractive character.
This can hardly be called a Phantom of the Opera book because the characters do not even resemble themselves.
