Book Description

What to give the person who has everything? This is the dilemma of Frederick Knick-Knack who surely must have, somewhere in his bags and boxes, his chests and cases, his collection of collections, the ideal gift for his dear friend Alice. As he draws forth this trinket, that trifle, a world of wonder unfolds. What will he choose? A robe spun from the shooting stars with a veil of the Milky Way? A marble made by Merlin the Enchanter? Perhaps the ticket for a thousand and one flights on a thousand and one nights? Somehow, somewhere amid these myriad gifts is a gift like no other, the perfect present. Sparkling with warmth and humor, The Merchant of Marvels and the Peddler of Dreams is an exuberant marriage of word and illustration, its pages rich with finely crafted objets d'art, line drawings, and breathtaking watercolors. Imbued with magic, mystery, and enchantment, this exquisite volume is the perfect present in itself -- a wonderful story and a joyful celebration of love and friendship to be read and treasured.

a beautifully creative book, fit for a goddess! great for creative inspiration, open to any page and enjoy. the story is beautiful while the illustrations are sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Whimsically illustrated and just plain cool........2007-01-12

The paper it is printed on is heavy stock ecru, like a fine art paper. The illustrations are nothing short of magical and accompany the story beautifully. I won't say any more so as not to spoil any part, except to comment that it is full of whimsy.

This would make a great gift for any artist or illustrator, or any book loving friend.

The only negative was the dust-jacket of the book, which I actually removed for gift giving. Not well designed, it is incongruent with the nature of the book and makes it seem "less."

5 out of 5 stars Will you...can you be tempted?.......2001-08-01

So begins this wonderful book which certainly tempted me! The magnificent Merchant of Marvels takes readers on a journey through a charming story, enhanced by various fairy tales, myths, etc. and adorned with Clement's lovely and original illustrations. This is a book that I was not content just to peruse--I HAD to buy it. A unique and beautiful acquisition for book lovers! I'm not sure if this is considered a children's book, but it seems to be one of those rare tomes that children and adults alike adore--share it with your child or your parent or your spouse or your hairdresser. Perhaps, too, it might be a good book for those who are reluctant to read (if you're a parent--this may apply to your child--particularly children interested in art, fairy tales, etc.--this book might "tempt" them!). Also, I think this is a good book to give to one you love as a romantic gesture.

5 out of 5 stars FOR ALL YOUNG-AT-HEARTS.......2000-12-11

What a wonderful flight for the imagination. One can just hope M. Clement continues to push us into our own worlds of make- believe. We're all children at heart if allowed to explore our whimseys, although this is not strictly a childrens book. It's a great read for bolstering the spirit of the young-at-hearts and for the young-at-heart wannabe's. A worthy gift for those one really cares about.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, inspiring for artists!.......2000-07-15

I bought this book for myself, and now I'm buying more copies to give to others, for Christmas. It's THAT good!

Don't be confused because it seems to be a "children's" book. It's far more than a cute story... the words and concepts are the sort of thing that inspire great art.

If I could create a billboard for this book, it'd be a take-off on that "This is your brain on drugs" series: I'd have a plain sheet of paper on one side, saying, "This is your creativity," and then on the right side, I'd have a picture of the Sistine Chapel, with the caption, "This is your creativity after reading '...Merchant of Marvels...' " ! *grin*

Yes, I love this book!

Book Description

Regenerative medicine and human life extension are among the most cutting-edge pursuits in science, and potentially among the most profitable. In Merchants of Immortality, Stephen S. Hall offers both an expose of this fascinating science and a case study of the billion-dollar industry that has grown up around it. At the center of the field are stem cell research and cloning -- topics of continuous ethical debate -- and the stem cell legislation that has unintentionally created a strange and thriving private-sector business niche. Merchants of Immortality is a captivating, incisive account of a new frontier at the intersection of biology and business.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating survey.......2005-05-31

Hall is a fabulous writer, given to wonderful turns of phrase. He's also a meticulous researcher -- the "Notes" section of the book is gigantic, citing sources for even the most off-hand of remarks.

This is really two books in one It begins discussing Leonard Hayflick and the discovery of programmed cell death, and the resulting search for the telomerase enzyme, then it takes a pretty sharp right turn into being a book about stem-cell research. Although some of the players are the same, they're really two different stories.

Hall's conclusion is that no rolling back of the clock is likely, and that "immortality," or even profound life extension, is probably not in the cards. But it's a fascinating journey nonetheless, and well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Revolution in Progress.......2004-12-04

So, when will stem cells come into widespread medical use? If you answer twenty years from now, you'd be wrong by about 60 years--they first became widely used in the 1960's! Only they were called "bone marrow transplants." Today thousands of them are done every year.

Hall has written a dozen so excellent books on medicine, biotechnology and molecular biology, and this is one of the best. Here he recounts the development of the idea that aging in humans can be scientifically understood and modified. He starts off with the wonderful story of the Hayflick limit with an account of his first interview with him and brings this maverick character to life. How often are the big ideas discovered by rogues and rebels--fearless men?

He covers a very wide swath of current developments in the cutting edge of biology and medicine--telomeres, stem cells, transplants, cloning, and aging--all told in enough depth that you can't help but learn something, even if you are pretty well informed. The history, the personalities, and the ideas are all here.

One thing I appreciated is that Hall makes no pretense about being disinterested in the subject--he takes some of it personally, and is not afraid to relate what his gut is telling him. He is partisan in the best sense of the word. He unflinchingly challenges the idealistic "bioethicists" who have lately ejected such nonsense into the public space, pretending to a certainty only a bishop could appreciate.

Hall also relates in some detail the evolution of the stem cell/cloning debate that has resulted in the policy that federal money can go to research only on the 70 embryonic stem cell lines already in existence, now known to be more like 6. And none of them suitable for therapeutic for humans because they are grown on a substrate of mouse cells and their viruses. The yokels and theologians have managed to set back this important avenue for improving human health by who knows how many decades... Sad to think we'll be looking for progress to the South Koreans, who recently generated human embryonic cell lines by nuclear transfer. Americans have yet to duplicate this

The quality of Hall's prose, and the nature of the subject itself, conspire to produce a book that I found very hard to put down. A terrific read!

5 out of 5 stars Meet the masters of biohope and biohype.......2003-09-02

(**** 1/2)

Stephen Hall has chosen a title that represents his book very well. What he sets forth, in supple, thoughtful, smoothly readable prose, is the saga of recent advances in "life extension" - both longevity research and research into the healing and regeneration of tissues with the aid of stem cells. As his title suggests, the emphasis is on the scientists involved, and on the public face of that science.

Along the way, he clarifies a good deal of the science itself: the discovery of the Hayflick limit, the finite limit to the number of times a normal cell can divide; the connection of that limit to the telomeres, the shoelace-tips on the ends of chromosomes; the chimerical enzyme telomerase, two parts protein and one part RNA, which repairs the telomeres and helps make cancer cells immortal; the sir-1 gene and its congeners which can double or sextuple your lifespan, if you happen to be a roundworm. And so on. Little of this will be news to those laymen who follow the science pages closely, but even for us it's good to have the timeline neatly laid out.

The bulk of Hall's attention, though, goes to the rivalries between laboratories to be first to publish and patent each of these breakthroughs; to the lineages of the biotech startups bankrolling the races; to the contrast between the solid if limited gains made by the biologists and the fairy dust sprinkled on investors; and to the enormous ferment surrounding all these new technologies as they began to impinge on embryonic stem cells and thereapeutic cloning.

Wandering through the scene from chapter to chapter, popping up repeatedly whenever the action gets hot, is the energetic true believer Michael West, the ousted founder of the premiere telomere outfit Geron, and the leading light of Advanced Cell Technology, which set the country on its ear two years ago with a premature announcement that it had cloned a human embryo. In his infectious zeal for abolishing the tyranny of old age, West serves not only as a central figure in the unfolding commercial and political saga, but as a stand-in for the insistent voice in all of us, whispering that all men may be mortal, but hey, maybe *you* can beat the rap.

Hall's conclusion, offered with a full appreciation of the fact that "It's hard to predict things, especially the future," is that a dramatic cure for aging is not likely to be in the cards. Just as cancer turned out to be a whole class of diseases with a host of different causes, so aging is turning out to be more complex than the discipline's pioneers imagined. What we can reasonably expect is a steady advancement of the average life span over the coming century, by another decade or two. How long we have to wait for breakthroughs in tissue regeneration in particular will likely depend less on science than on politics.

Two intriguing lines of lifespan research, the one tracking the sir family of genes, and the one investigating the effects of free radicals, are not ignored but, perhaps because they haven't caught the public fancy sharply, get relatively short shrift. Less than halfway through the book, the spotlight shifts from the study of aging to the study of stem cells. Because the U.S. for the last quarter century has enjoyed an effective moratorium on experimentation with aborted fetuses or discarded IVC embryos, American scientists' attention has focused more and more on the other theoretical way of obtaining human embryos: inserting the nucleus of an adult cell into an enucleated human egg.

If anyone were to succeed in doing that, and coaxing the result to divide until it reached the blastocyst stage - that would be "therapeutic cloning." So far, no one's done it, or at any rate no one who's done it has felt like advertising it. In a political squaring of the circle, President Bush managed to permit NIH to fund limited therapeutic cloning in a way that ended up outlawing funding in practical terms. As a result, scientists in the field face the classic NRA nightmare: when federal stem cells are outlawed, only maverick venture capitalists will have stem cells. At press time, no one knows what's really happening, what kind of ethical oversight private companies are bothering to put in place, or how restricted access to resulting medical breakthroughs will be when it's all proprietary, with no NIH ownership at all. For the moment, the U.S. is stuck with the worst of the "pro-life" and the "mad scientist" worlds, while the rest of the world does its research in the sunlight and steals a technical march on us.

All the players on both sides of that circle-squaring, and the principal shakers, movers and move-blockers in the relevant research, are profiled here, some in full screen 3-d and some in fetching thumbnails. The field is unlikely to be surveyed by a more complete or more even handed chronicler for some while.

2 out of 5 stars Big on Merchants, Little on Immortality.......2003-08-08

If you're looking for a book describing what it's like to be a research scientist in the academic world, or if you're looking for a detailed history of stem cell politics, this book is for you.

However, if you're looking for cutting-edge science, exciting discoveries, and an up-to-date look at the modern day "quest for the fountain of youth" - look elsewhere. You may eventually find some of it, but not without wading through pages of tedious "personal struggles".

This book fits far more easily into the "Biography" genre than the "Popular Science" category.

Book Description

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
Robust and bawdy, The Taming of the Shrew captivates audiences with outrageous humor as Katharina, the shrew, engages in a contest of wills–and love–with her bridegroom, Petruchio, in a comedy of unmatched theatrical brilliance, filled with visual gags and witty repartee.
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Fairy magic, love spells, and an enchanted wood turn the mismatched rivalries of four young lovers into a marvelous mix-up of desire and enchantment, all touched by Shakespeare’s inimitable vision of the intriguing relationship between dreams and the waking world.
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
This dark comedy of love and money contains one of the truly mythic figures in literature–Shylock, the Jewish moneylender. The “pound of flesh” he demands as payment of Antonio’s debt has become a universal metaphor for vengeance. Here, pathos and farce combine with moral complexity and romantic entanglements, to display the extraordinary power and range of Shakespeare at his best.
TWELFTH NIGHT
Set in a topsy-turvy world like a holiday revel, this comedy juxtaposes a romantic plot involving separated twins and mistaken identity with a more satiric one about the humiliation of a pompous killjoy. The hilarity is touched with melancholy, and the play ends, not with laughter, but with a clown’s plaintive song.

Each Edition Includes:
• Comprehensive explanatory notes
• Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship
• Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English
• Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories
• An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

5 out of 5 stars Four Comedies.......2000-03-28

This book contains the four "best" comedies of Shakespeare, along with an excellent foreword by Joseph Papp. For each play, it contains a very well written introduction (one that is not only on the play, but links each of them together), Shakespeare's original source material (example: "A Merry Jest of a Shrewd and Curst Wife Lapped in Morel's Skin" for "the Taming of the Shrew"), and well commented textual notes. I found this collection particularly useful for an "upper-level" look at these four plays.

2 out of 5 stars Is This Book Accurate?.......2006-07-05

Like the previous reviewer, I also have some questions/concerns about Higham's accuracy. I've read at least 5 other books about Thalberg, Shearer & MGM, & several things here are new to me including allegations that the Thalberg Shearer marriage was shaky (I've always read the exact opposite previously), & that Thalberg had a tendency to scream at people when he was angry (I've previously read that his persona tended to be quite mild mannered). I'd be very interested to hear other Mayer/Thalberg/Shearer biographer's opinion of this book's accuracy. I also question the allegations that Walt Disney was a Nazi sympathizer amongst others. My 2 star rating is with the assumption that the book is factually inaccurate.

To me it pretty much reads as one scandal after another..... there may be SOME truth in that!

3 out of 5 stars Long on gossip, short on facts.......2004-05-12

Being a huge fan of classic Hollywood, I snapped this book up and devoured it quickly, thoroughly enjoying all the juicy bits and behind the scene information. Once I got over the initial excitement of so much gossip all at once, I took a closer look, and found that in many, many instances, Higham gets the most basic information completely wrong. Information that is laughably easy to verify. For example:

1. Norma Shearer and Irving Thalberg's daughter is named Katherine, not Barbara. She was born in 1935, not 1936.
2. Ted Healy died from injuries suffered in a bar brawl, kidney failure, and alcoholism, not from a heart attack brought on by Mayer. He was 41, not 45, when he died.
3. Jean Harlow never had an affair with her stepfather, Marino Bello; in fact, she hated him. And she didn't encourage her friends and colleagues to invest in his "gold mines," either.
4. John Gilbert didn't die of a heart attack. He was given a sedative by his nurse, had an adverse reaction, and choked to death while unattended.

And so on...

In addition, Higham is very partial to some stars and absolutely hates others; these attitudes come across in Mayer's biography so strongly that they are often distracting from the story itself. Garbo is a monster of selfishness. Crawford is a bed-hopping tramp. Shearer is a terrible snob. Some of which may be true, but I'm sure these people had their good sides, too, but you won't find such balance here.

At first glance, there is quite a bit of fascinating, never-before-known "information" in this book. After realizing how little the author checks his facts, though, I have to wonder if any of these incredible tales are true, or even close to true.

4 out of 5 stars rich in detail.......2000-11-21

In his prologue, Higham tells us that much of the information he discloses has been drawn from hitherto sealed government files. Its more believable that he had long conversations with Howard Strickling, since Strickling was head of MGM's publicity department during the reign of Louis B Mayer, and the one responsible for the covering up of the secret lives of the stars. I guess the fun about gossip is in the discovery of the sordid details. Perhaps it's then only fair that I drop some of the names mentioned and let you discover the particulars. There's actually not a lot that was previously unknown to me. There's the death of Jean Harlow's husband Paul Bern, and then later the death of Harlow herself. The day of the lamentable shortage of knockworst in the commissary when no jockstraps could be worn under tights. The not too surprising inclination of Garbo's mentor Mauritz Stiller. Garbo's repeated no-shows for marriage to John Gilbert, and Mayer's dislike of Gilbert stemming from behaviour long before Garbo came into the scene. Why Garbo never bore a child. The fate of the footage of extras being drowned in Ben-Hur. The men killed by both Clark Gable and John Huston. Lee Tracy's forced retirement. How George Cukor nearly lost the job of directing Camille, as well. The supplier of drugs to Judy Garland. And Leni Riefenstahl's attempts to join MGM. The scandals seem to dissipate once we hit World War 2, or is that Higham's focus is more on Mayer's infidelities, and eventually his clashes with Nicholas Schenck and Dore Schary? Higham also presents a filmic history of the studio and it's output. I wish he'd only given us more dirt, because I get the impression that these scandals are just the tip of the iceberg.

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2007-04-14

I love this book. Its original and lovely.(and i never use that word) I loved the Characters: Josh who is the main character is a dreamer and thief but thats what makes him special in this story.
Baz is a gifted drummer and thats what saves his life and his friends
and Theresa is a storyteller, they are all from different backgrounds but they work so well in this story and u come to love them.

Basically Josh gets called to work for a mysterious company called Gippart. when he gets there (in the middle of the night) he finds out that the company's objective is to travel through time or (dream time called Umaya) and sell things made in the future. The catch is that they have been trying to travel through real time and they believe that Josh can do it. the story and the characters got me from beginning to end, even the ones i didnt like. Its worth every penny!!

Lets just hope Ms. Hoving writes another one

5 out of 5 stars I'm impressed!.......2006-12-10

Note, I did not buy this book yet. I only picked it up and started reading it in the bookstore. I can't stop thinking about this book so I felt that a review was necessary even if I haven't read the whole thing yet.

Ok, I did not know what to expect upon reading it but as soon as I saw the title of the book, it caught my attention right away. Opening it up slowly, I peeked at the summary on the inside of the cover's flap, which basically tells you of a collector/thief 12 year old, Josh Cope, who gets hired by this company, Gippart, which runs a business between reality and dreams.

So I thought, 'Alright? Sounds interesting.'
I flipped to the first page of text and began to read. The text was a bit smaller than I imagined for such a HUGE book, but that didn't bother me as soon as I read the very first set of words. It literally brought you right to the plot at the beginning. Very short intro about Josh. It was straight to the point. And then, the way, the next part comes out which is the introduction to Gippart comes in a very mysterious way. It's so mysterious that you would want to keep on reading to find out exactly how "it's" going to happen and what Josh needs to do to get "there".

In the midst of my reading, I went back to the summary of the book and noticed the quote sitting on top of the summary. The quote instantly made me think that there was something more than what meets the eye. Was the quote a real warning or was it a trick? You'll never know until you read further....

I reached to the 15th page before returning the book to the shelf. This book is a winner as it's very fast pace. The details that the author put into the book are very vivid. Glad that it's super huge too. ^_^ Looking foward to actually buying it.

Edit: Bought it from Amazon four days ago and I just got it today. It's a very hard book to put down. :D I realized that some of the words may be splitted throughout the book but that's understandable since this is a translation (that's still in process?).

Josh is an average 12 year old boy who is good at sleeping whenever he wants. one night the phone rings, Josh gets up to get it, and is thrown into the magical-trading industry of Gippart where he is forced to venture into dream-worlds (umaya) and find the magical tembi- who live in the dawn of time.

This magical book was a captivating read and I reccomend it to all fairy-tale lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, original read!.......2006-03-25

This captivating book of Isabel Hovings, displays a whole new era of modern fairy-tale. The magic and adventure in it is beyond words and the characters and plots are well blended in the story. For a long book, every page has depicted a beautiful and interesting, intriguing story half modern-half fairytale.

Josh is an average 12 year old boy who is good at sleeping whenever he wants to too, and stealing items from other people. But when one night the phone rings, Josh gets up to get it, and is thrown into the magical-trading industry of Gippart where he is forced to venture into dream-worlds (umaya) and find the magical tembi- who live in the dawn of time.

This magical book was a captivating read and I reccomend it to all fairy-tale lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic suprise!.......2005-12-06

The title and thickness interested me, so I picked it up and started reading. It's not often you find such a thick book (600+ pages) in the teen section, although this has become more and more common since J.K. Rowling has made it popular to read once again. Several of my favorite authors were republished due to her books and kids wanting more fantasy . . . and I think this book would have been overlooked too if it had come out before the Goblet of Fire.

It still might be overlooked, although I sincerely hope that won't be the case, because this one deserves all the attention it gets.

Fantasy is revived here, taking a fresh new look at several different plot and story lines and bringing back to mind bits and pieces of mythology that I would never have thought to place together. An imaginative style that is not hampered by translation from Dutch to English or its length, this one is filled with interesting characters that catch one's attention and (at least for me) remain unforgettable.

From the first page, I was hooked. Not very many books begin with a twelve year old admitting quite frankly that he is a thief. By the end of the third chapter I knew I had to buy it. I paid full market price for The Dream Merchant, but I wasn't disappointed and I certainly won't be returning it.

It reminds me a bit of "The Ear the Eye and the Arm," by Nancy Farmer or Diana Wynne Jone's "Homeward Bounders" or her better known book from the Chrestomanci series "Magicians of Caprona"-- three extremely good books for which I have found nothing that compares with them for years.

Although several characters had what seemed like drastic shifts in personality to fit the later story line (Moussa, anyone?), I liked the idea of two family companies at odds with each other and the theme of reconciliation throughout the book during the long, sometimes hazardous, adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A motivational "MUST-READ" for All!.......2001-12-24

Dr. Bailey has captivated an audience of adults and youth with "The Dream Merchant". Each page is just as exciting as the previous page. The pearls of wisdom that he has incorporated into his book have stuck with me. I even find myself using some of them when I am in discussions with youth.I have given so many away that I feel that I am the publicist! Whenever I take a nap, I just imagine myself meeting Junior and participating in the adventure! My hat is off to Erroll and the exciting future of "The Dream Merchant"! A movie would be fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2000-08-30

I read this book over two years ago, and I still feel it is one of the best books I have ever read. If you can, give this book to a younger brother or sister and be inspired yourself. It shows how a young man who is in a troubled home, meets a figure who is between real and mythical, yet he teaches him lessons that would take him throughout life. The best part of the book for me is when Junior taught the young man about intimacy. Very enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a must read for all.......2000-02-22

A wonderful, inspirational and insightful book. This is a book to sit and read as a family, especially those with males. Truly awesome in my opinion.

All out, my FAVORITE book! Mr. Dream Merchant was one of those novels that you could not put down and once you did, you wanted to read it again, and I DID! It touched on being human and being spiritual, one with God, and understanding life's parellels of being accepted. This book touched me in a way that I thought could never happen. I understand how one's dreams can come to life by the words written in this novel. I would highly suggest that you get this novel TODAY and READ IT. Thank you Mr. Bailey for putting together such a WONDERFUL and SPIRITUAL book. I have highlighted certain areas in the book to remind me of WHO IS IN CONTROL!!! May God Continue to BLESS you on your Journey's END......

Book Description

CIA officer Shawn Reilly recruits foreign officials to spy for the United States. He thinks of his job as selling dreams to people who need money, need their egos stroked or want revenge on their bosses or government. After spending many years in the hellholes of the world, he has wound up in the twilight of his career in Lisbon, Portugal where he faces a "by the book" boss, a crumbling marriage and Boris, the chief of the Russian intelligence service in Portugal who is likewise targeting Shawn. At the same time, the Libyan intelligence service is trying to lure a Central Asian chemical weapons specialist to Libya and the Russian service is on the tail of the Kazak scientist. Boris' attractive daughter, visiting from Moscow, is swept up in the plots within plots, where as in the real world of espionage, all is not necessarily as it first appears. The various threads of intrigue come together in Lisbon. In addition to performing his professional duties Shawn is forced to face the question for an aging spy of just what really matters in life - one's duty or love. The Dream Merchant of Lisbon goes into the minds of the major players to explore the psychology of espionage, based on the author's true life experiences in that shadowy world.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read: The Dream Merchant of Venice.......2007-01-09

this moved fast, was realistic, offered a behind the scenes look at how embassies and espionage work but plenty happened too, people get killed and things. I heard the author lecture this year and he convinced a room full of people that he had been an undercover agent of the CIA assigned around the world thru the cold war. So I thought the book had credibility as well. Gordon Ridley

Gripping narrative of CIA operative Riley caught in the middle murder, espionage and a forbidden love affair with the wife of a Soviet Station Chief.
