Book Description
Finally a script format guide that is accurate, complete, authoritative and easy to use, written by Hollywood's foremost authority on industry standard script formats.
Customer Reviews:
Must Have for a screenwriter.......2007-08-17
Excellent. Comprehensive. Full of examples. Will it be the same standard fifteen years from now? Who knows.
What Other Books Don't Have..........2007-08-12
There are hundreds of screenwriting books on the shelves (some of them good), but even the best are 90% recycled material; endless prattling about character and plot points, as if the last 40 books never mentioned it. For all those hundreds of pages about narrative, there's very little technical information about how to convert that material into a rigid and admittedly unreadable format that is the screenplay. The advent of screenwriting software solves all those problems except the ones the books never talked about: proper formatting, which, Riley states quite reasonably, can put a good story in bad shape.
He makes an important note before the book even begins: THE SOFTWARE ONLY DOES MARGINS. Neither it nor these books tell you how to type out elaborate, uncommon transitions and dialogue arrangements on the page: overlapping voices, phone-conversations, foreign langages, flashbacks and scenes-within-scenes (etc.)...but Hollywood Standard DOES. And unlike other writers of how-to books, he doesn't lacquer the page with self-important droning. He stays professional and direct, explaining the difficult in simple, concise, this-is-how-and-this-is-why fashion. You can read this book in an hour and STILL find yourself revisiting it again and again to double-check your work.
Half of the book are examples of what can go wrong and how to fix it: everything from where to put hyphens in slug-lines to what words to underline and when to captialize and more. Your head is likey to start swimming from the overload of detail you receive about how to tweak things exactly the way they should, and from the realization of how much you didn't know: like how to omit scenes without changing the page count on a locked script, or how many lines should precede a page break, or when to alter you parentheticals.
Granted, it was correctly mentioned that not EVERY SINGLE LITTLE DETAIL IN THE HISTORY OF SCREENWRITING FORMAT is addressed in this book, and there's no guarantee that refraining from underlining periods will get your script sold, but the information revealed in STANDARD will ensure that if your script DOES get rejected, it won't be for amateur mistakes.
I can't recommend this highly enough.
Best Screenwriting Format Guide.......2007-07-11
This is most definitely the best book on screenplay format. If you're looking into writing professionally for film, this is an absolute must-have. If you want your script to make it through Hollywood, don't delay any longer before getting your copy.
SAVED ME FOUR YEARS OF COLLEGE.......2007-03-10
just kidding. i just finished this book and i will now buy the software that was mentioned. i have a few stories to tell and direct! i will still hire a great writer, but will know the script writing process etc. clearly now! thanks amazon.......now i don't have to kill myself..
Excellent resource.......2007-01-13
This book is straight forward, easy to read. Chris Riley has a humorous style that doesn't bog the reader down. Gives confidence to write a script that looks professional. Great examples of how a scripted page should look.

A humorous yet useful approach to travel.......2007-07-12
I found this guide to be a great introduction to palau and useful in my wanderings around the islands. Too bad the author is a redneck old guy without much of an interest in marine exploits, or he would have expanded much better on the best side of Palau, which is scuba diving. Also the maps are confusing as the keys to places are kind of mixed-up in the black and white reproductions. But I would nevertheless recommend the book to anyone going to Palau as a very good reference.
Papa Mike's Palau Islands Handbook is great !.......2007-02-23
Having been to Palau,(and being fortunate enough to be married to a Palauan), I can say this little guidebook is excellent. The book is very accurate and I can tell the author took the time to visit all the inhabited islands in this beautiful archipelago; not many tourists will visit Anguar or Kayangel but those visits are worth the effort. The author aalso mingled with the locals which is also a very good thing to do if you want to see the really good stuff.
I plan to retire to Palau and this little book made me homesick, in a way. Palau is remote, difficult and expensive to get to. It is also a wild and unspoiled Eden and if you are into Botany, Zoology and the Natural Sciences in general, then Palau is a dream come true.
Papa Mike's Palau Islands Handbook.......2006-07-10
Very helpful in planning our trip. The book even gave details on the outer island besides the main island of Koror. Books on Palau do not exist if you want info buy this book
Product Description
Most people are curious; what is it like to work as an escort? According to numerous sex surveys, one of women's top fantasies is to be paid for sex. But escort work is not as simple as money for sex. Brooks, a former escort, has written a myth-exploding examination of what escort work requires from the escort while creating an honest and humane vision of a mysterious, maligned business.
The book is not a recruitment tool because the job is not for everyone. The Foundation is a reference written to create a realistic awareness of the pitfalls and bonuses of escort work for current and future escorts, as well as the curious public. Ultimately, safe and sane escort work leads to happier, healthier escorts. (And happy escorts make for happy clients.)
Customer Reviews:
They WILL publish anything!.......2007-09-17
This purchase was a way to delve into the lifestyle of an escort, since they've been involved in many sexual scandals lately. I wanted to find the value and thrill these men in the public eye have found in their encounters with these women. This was bought and read with an open mind, truly no expectations. I read it as a professional business woman, a mother, a wife, a daughter and a sexual and sensual being. There were some interesting revelations and candid discussions which opened my eyes to situations I was ignorant of. Her words were biting and cut-throat at times, but as she claims, it's about business not emotions. Kudos! However, I felt that it read like a chapter book for a 3rd grader, it was condescending, drab and simply not very well written. Granted this wasn't aiming to become the next literary accomplishment, but I just expect more from a book if someone, somewhere, felt it was worthy enough to publish. Interesting read, not certain that it would do to much to help anyone who MAY want to break into this field. It seems that the basic business information she provides is common sense to begin with.
Highly recommended.......2007-08-17
The Internet Escort's Handbook is truly a well thought out book written n in a holistic matter by an ex escort for all girls who are currently working in the industry, keen or curious about entering the industry. It gives an insight of what it is and what goes on in this industry; asks a lot of provocative questions; provides useful tips. I would strongly recommend this as the ONE resource you should read. I can't wait for the other books in this series to be out.
So you want to get started?.......2007-08-11
Thought the book by Amanda Brooks was well put together. Gives you ideas of what you need to do if you chose to go into the business. But, it does not stop there. Need to go to Book 2 which is not available yet. I do recommend the book for starters.
highly educational.......2007-07-05
This is not a sex book. The style is simple and direct. there are lots of very interesting topics. I loved the part about "taking care of physical appearance". This does apply to women in general, not only escort business. The part about protecting yourself from STD is a little paranoiac but since this job is exposed to high risks, it is good to know what the risks are. I would recommend this book for all women and men (even if this is mostly for a women audience), curious about this underground world. It is more about the facts and the technical aspect than about the morality, although the author mentions the psychological part and the fact that it often leads to a double life. This book is intended to be a how to guide, but it can be read for entertainment only as well. I am a married man and I have more respect for these women after reading this book. They are normal women, often educated and running a home business, with all the administrative part of it.
Wonderful!!.......2007-06-19
I have to say that Ms. Brooks hit it on the head! This book is a perfect read for anyone that was interested in this line of work, how and where to start! She dispels the myths of drug addicted, sexual abused women are the only ones in this profession. She gives common sense answers to questions that the average person may not have thought of! Gracious and beautifully written, this book pays homage to the women that have gone before and prepared the foundation. It sheds light on the facts (and fictions), gives hope and laughter to anyone who reads this book. This book is not for everyone, but for everyone who is privy to it, it is a joy to read! I truly enjoyed it!

Entertaining History of One of Hollywood's Landmarks.......1997-03-18
I picked up this colorful trade book in a bookstore and had to have it. A collection of stories, rememberances, photos and facts about one of Hollywood's more interesting landmarks--the Chauteau Marmont. I had never heard of it before, but now I understand it's place in LAs history. If you love to read Vanity Fair, this is a book for you. (Especially the article by Dominick Dunne.)
I work in the publishing industry, and I have to say that the books' designer and editor both deserve great praise for the care and sophistication with which this book was put together

Customer Reviews:
Island adventurer.......2007-01-06
This book was fabulous. My wife and I were married in the Cooks and I found this book to be quite helpful and full of humor. As for map scale, the island is very small and you could almost throw a rock to the other side of the island. As Papa explains in the book the islanders are very nice and accommodating while working on what they claim is "coconut time".
My suggestion if on a trip to the Cooks, read Papa Mike's book and you will see for your self how easy the island was to navigate after reading this enjoyable masterpiece.
Not a stand alone guidebook........2005-05-31
This book, which is more of a trip report than a real guidebook is not adequate to be your only guide to the Cooks.
The most crucial failing is that the location of lodging and restuarants is not indicated on his maps. It really is helpful to know where places are located.
Looking at page 35, his map of Rarotonga, shows some districts, Muri, Titikaveka but there isn't even a scale indicator, how far is one neighborhood from the other?
He often subsitutes personal anecdotes for useful information. For instance he tells you that 3 collect calls he made to his office in California were expensive but does not really explain how the phones work in the Cooks (Kia Orana cards, etc.)
Or he writes "What Not to Take - Leave behind your hash pipe, methanthedamine, fruits, meats, cats, dogs and your nine-millimeter Uzi, for none of these are permitted." Was he padding? did he have to add some more pages? because that is just a useless waste of words.
Othertimes he relies on opinions of his fellow tourists (he admits as much himself) as in restaurant reviews.
I just feel that this was a lazy book. He went to the Cook's to write this guide and just didn't make much (or any effort) to do anything extra that would assist the traveler. He rode around on a scooter and saw some accomodations (he only lists those that have more than 4 units), if you use the Cook Island tourist Web site you can get more info and pictures.
He also describes the cross-island walk but on the Lonely Planet forum he admitted that he had not done the walk himself but only interviewed a guide. Yet he writes stuff like "The rest of us, after viewing the needle ..."
If this book is available for free somewhere, sure take a look.
He does describe taking a freighter out to Penrhyn, an interesting 4 page description that is not in Moon or LP.
I did glean one valuable thing from the book, under Courtesies and Appropriate dress he writes than one should always exchange pleasantries with a shopkeeper (Good morning, how are you?) before asking for whatever you want to purchase.
But this is not a real guidebook.
Very Good!.......2004-10-17
I have never been to the Cook Islands, but as I read Papa Mike's book, I felt as if I was in the middle of a trip there. He makes the reader feel life on the island as it is lived. It is very clear that he loves the people and their way of life. His stories and tips are warm with touches of humor, and yet very detailed so that the reader can easily visualize a trip to the Islands. I was impressed with the details of the accomodations or lack thereof on each island, and the details of activities and travel on each island. Mr. Hollywood has obviously spent some time living on the Islands, and after reading his book, I hope to do so, too.
VERY useful handbook!.......2004-10-11
Papa Mike's Cook Islands Hanbook is an exceptionally useful guide for the first time visitor to the Cook Islands. My wife and I traveled to the Cooks in July 2004, and loved it. Papa Mike's book helped us prepare every step of the way, from booking our accomodation in advance, bringing proper clothing, procedures at the airport, to very accurate reviews of local restaurants. The book details the many options for activities around the island, including the "not to be missed" Island Nights. Also included is a detail of all of the Rarotonga bus schedules, so you can quickly and inexpensively get around the island.
This book is worth every penny, and will save you tons on your trip. I give it my highest rating.
Moon Guides: Tahiti Handbook by David Stanley is much better.......2004-09-26
Sorry to disagree with one of the other reviewers, bu the COOK ISLANDS are NOT a "little known" island chain. I am sorry to say that the small island of Aitutaki has been over-built with INCREDIBLY expensive (for the poor service & mediocre food) resorts that charge 5 star prices (and more) and deliver 2 star service & food, pollute the fragile lagoon with OTWB (over-the-water-bungalows) that can cost $US 600+ per day. An nearby, off-shore tiny atoll (where one can go for a day snorkel picnic) is now over-run with tourists, an over-priced shack where one can stay for the night & a refreshment/food stand.
If you purchase David Stanley's TAHITI HANDBOOK you get maps, culture, history, religion, politics, flight & ferry schedules, reviews on food, dive shops, car rentals, excursions and lodging in all categories, on ALL of French Polynesia, the Cook Islands & Easter Island, all in the same book for a reasonable price. If this other reviewer had read the COOK ISLAND section in David's book he'd know that the Cooks are not a remote, untraveled island chain, but an island chain frequented by Kiwis & Ozzies who get MUCH better deals (on hotel room rates) by booking through their own local travel agents as opposed to US travel agents, and he'd also learn that sometimes, self-booking and negotiating with the smaller hotel's owners can produce a better rate, and a better experience, than relying on a US packager that wants to shove you into a pre-packaged plan that pays him/her the biggest commission. David's 25 years of traveling the South Pacific incognito makes his advice INVALUABLE. He also includes the feedback of readers, I know, I am one of them. Tahiti Handbook is more extensive and reliable than Papa Mike's or the unreliable (on price & room rates & maps) LONELY PLANET'S COOK ISLANDS.

A very basic primer.......2007-06-16
I wish I could have searched inside this book before purchasing. In this book you will get the most basic information needed to make the move. The author also sites contributors with questionable backgrounds regarding children.
I would easily recommend passing on this book.
Great Resource!.......2005-04-20
If you're a parent and have a child who wants to be in "the biz", then this is the book for you. We don't live in LA and were desperate for information that could help us understand the industry and make good choices. This book has been a tremendous asset that we consult quite often. Everyone knows the saying that "you don't know what you don't know." Thanks to this book, we are now "in the know" about how to best help our son pursue his Hollywood dream. Thanks Troy!

Hilarious jab at surviving La-La-Land.......2001-10-15
It's another fine skewering of the motion picture industry subculture like the Jay Mohr series "Action," focusing primarily on the glory jobs like Actor, Producer, Agent, Publicist, Writer (the only job that is given any sort of empathy or survivability), Poseur, and Model/Actress/Whatever. The Top 10 lists are clever--like how to get a studio deal, how not to get a studio deal, how to get into a big party, how to get thrown out of a big party, and so on--as are the nepotism lists and which applications of it were good moves and which weren't. I especially loved the five-year plan section (everyone seems to suffer career death--or literal death in the case of the Producer--except for Writer/Directors).
Perceptively funny.......1997-10-06
I howled at the observations in this book. Everyone was at the mercy of the pen and the light humor was in very good taste. Some references I didn't understand (guess that's why I needed the book....). I recommend it to anyone who is curious about what goes on beyond the scenes in Hollywood.
Best and funniest since "The Preppy Handbook" 10 years ago.......1997-08-21
Really good, easy and funny reading. The humor is targeted as much to readers in Middle America as it is to Hollywood insiders.
Like a bunch of well-written Spy Magazine features (back when Spy was good.) Includes funny "top 10"-type lists that are even better the second time you read them, because you start to get the various inside jokes involved. A dishy parody of all the Hollywood stereotypes whose images now populate the world.
Some of the "how to" lists are both real and absurd at the same time, which is one reason why the book is so funny.
The pictures and captions are great (unfortunately printed a bit too dark to be able to make copies to fax to friends). A few of the book's references are over my head, like when you can't quite figure out what unspoken joke David Letterman is laughing about, but you know it's gotta be funny so you feel like laughing anyway.
I think I'll end up buying a bunch of copies to give out as holiday gifts.
Book Description
Have you a dream? Have you a hope for a bigger, better you? Okay, so for you everything is just fine. But is it? Is it really or did you some time ago grow up and shelve those silly, childish hopes, dreams and beliefs? You know.those ones you had back in the day when the world revolved around you and only you. Or maybe they were very realistic and you actually chased them down for a dozen years to no avail. Whether you are an up and comer striving to beat down a new path or a mid life struggler tripping over the re-growth of the berry vines in the old path, you're inevitably going to have a question or two about what to do with those hopes, dreams, and beliefs. Are they valid? Are they achievable or are you just a silly fool that needs to grow up, mature and get on with life? Hope's Handbook-In Search of the Hollywood Ending is dedicated to you. The Hopeful. Those of you who wish, dream and believe.which easily enough to believe is most of us. Just as most of us are born with opposing thumbs most of us are born with these common, simple, hopeful desires. The only problem associated with this is that most of us are taught how to apply these opposing thumbs for practical use and very few of us are ever taught how to apply our hopes and dreams for practical use. With the exception being, "Never let your hopes and dreams get in the way of putting food on the table." Well guess what? No one's going to go to their grave from missing a meal. But do you want to go to that grave without a hope?

Book Description
Every movie starts with a story. And, although it's often the actors and directors who get all of the glory, a movie is nothing without a writer and his tale. The Baseline Guide to Hollywood Screenwriters, 1930-2005—culled from the exclusive database of Baseline Hollywood.com, the leading source of information for the industry—offers an in-depth look at Hollywood's legendary wordsmiths.
From a seasoned script surgeon like William Goldman, an up-and-coming savant like Charlie Kaufman, or an old-hat, roll-up-the-sleeves pencil pusher like A.I. Bezzerides, to the actors (Owen Wilson), directors (Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, etc.), and Noble Prize winners (William Faulkner) who picked up the pen in the hopes of writing themselves into film history, or, at the very least, Annie Hall, The Baseline Guide to Screenwriters, 1930-2005 provides all the essential information a film buff or studio player could want. In addition to providing essential biographical and professional data (date and place of birth, education, career milestones, nominations and awards), the book is filled with interesting trivia and factoids, as well as lively and incisive biographical sketches on all of the geniuses, hacks, and heavyweights that make the movies talk.
