Book Description
From Playboy's classic archives comes a trilogy of stocking-stuffer-sized volumes, each devoted to a certain hair color destined to quicken a man's pulse. Blonde? Brunette? Redhead? In the fifties, sixties, and seventies, it seemed like all the Playboy models, not just blondes, had more fun. Building sandcastles in the buff, romping on tiger skin rugs, or starting pillow fights, beauties of every tress are captured in these timeless color photographs. Playboy contributing editor James R. Petersen introduces each book with a heartfelt text, and witty quotes are sprinkled throughout. At once evocative and whimsical, this handsome collection is a perfect gift for a gentleman whether he prefers a blonde, marries a brunette, or has always had a thing for a redhead.
Customer Reviews:
If I can't have red, I'd rather be dead!.......2007-09-05
After reading the other reviews, I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this book. But I love redheads, so I went ahead. I'm glad I did. This book absolutely works for me. My only complaint is the size of the pages. They measure 8 in. x 6 in, nowhere near large enough to do justice to the beauty of these women. Others have complained about the age of the photos, but for me, it adds an intriguing element to the book. It's like a set of rare treasures, sealed in a time capsule for 30 years to scintillate a new generation. The beauty of many of these ladies is enough to overcome the age of the photos, especially Marquerite Empey, Willy Rey, Deanna Baker and Monica Tidwell. Deanna and Monica in particular look as if their pictures were taken yesterday, not in the 70s. The foldout featuring Allison Parks is excellent as well.
If you love redheads, I think you will enjoy this book despite the small pages. But there are a few reasons it might not work for everybody. First is the age of the photos. The most recent date I saw was 1973. For me, a beautiful nude woman is a beautiful nude woman. But if hairstyle affects your appreciation of a woman's body, you will find a few of these photos off-putting. Some of the tan lines are a bit amusing, too. Also, if you're looking for the anatomical lesson to be found in modern Playboy photos, you won't find it here. In other words, there are no microscopic examinations of hairless genitalia here. In fact, there is only one crotch shot, and it is quite hairy. As noted by others, these pictures are a bit more artistic and less explicit than what you will find in the modern magazine. Works for me, but maybe not for all.
I wish the photos were larger, but I have no absolutely regrets about buying this book.
Great Book.......2007-05-15
This book really isn't just another playboy, its more of an art book dedicated to red heads. If you've got a thing for red heads then I would say this book is a good choice. While not all of the girls are attractive some of the prettiest girls I have ever seen are in here. Its interesting to see the changes of women over the decades.
Come On Baby, Light My Fire..........2007-03-26
This mini-volume is one of three vintage photo collections issued by Playboy to celebrate any man's favorite hair color. PLAYBOY: REDHEADS is an homage to that relatively rare though undeniably beautiful and mysterious mutant strain, the true redhead.
James Peterson, the Editor, must love redheads the most. He waxes absolutely rhapsodic about them in his introduction. Any man who appreciates the redhead will instantly understand.
The book consists only of photos dating from 1953 to 1974. While many alluring redheads have appeared in Playboy's pages since then, by limiting the collection to The First Twenty Years, Peterson has no shrift with "bottle jobs," ignores the artificially-enhanced breast, and disdains the racing stripe sorority and the Baby Bare Generation. Thank heavens! The women portrayed herein are real women, some of them wearing Mrs. Cleaver's hairdo perhaps, and some of them more voluptuous and less toned than current tastes allow, but, still in all, untouched by surgically-gloved hands.
Since this is a collection of vintage photographs, they range from 1950s stilted to 1970s freestyle, and it is interesting to see the magazine evolve, and our culture's perceptions of feminine beauty change.
My only criticism is that there just isn't enough of it.
PLAYBOY: REDHEADS is a great "stocking stuffer" book for any man with taste.
Playboy Redheads.......2006-10-25
Whether it's a smoldering auburn, a fire engine red or a sweet strawberry blonde, red hair has captivated red-blooded men for centuries. The rarest and most beguiling of hair colors finally gets its due in this collection of fabulous full color photographs from PLAYBOY from the fifties, sixties and seventies. This sleek volume presents a host of scantily clad beauties each in her favorite element: frolicking poolside, preparing the perfect cocktail, starting a pillow fight. Elegantly designed with the discerning man in mind, REDHEADS captures the eye like only a REDHEAD can.
Playboy: Brunettes.......2006-10-13
this review refers to the Brunettes edition of the 3-book Playboy series:Brunettes,Blondes and Redheads.
the girls in these pages range from the late 50's to the early 70's.
i am of the age that the girls from the mid-60's to early 70's are my favorite so this book was just for me and i should think other men who prefer girls from those days.
Playboy girls are always so pretty. sweet smiles. nothing dirty or raw about them.
the girls from this era had no use for implants which i don't even think were around then.
back then, the girls were all natural. and the brunettes in this book are all natural and beautiful......and of course sexy.
i highly recommend this book. and it's very reasonably priced too.

Book Description
The Cambridge Film Classics series provides a forum for the revisionist studies of the classic works of the cinematic canon from the perspective of the "new auteurism, " which recognizes that films emerge from a complex interaction of bureaucratic, technological, intellectual, cultural, and personal forces. Each volume provides a general introduction to the life and work of a particular director, followed by critical essays on several of the director's most important films, and a filmography.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Antonioni primer.......2006-03-10
Quite simply, this book is the perfect starting point for someone trying to understand the often-confusing and richly layered and textured films of Michelangelo Antonioni. Brunette devotes a chapter each to six of Antonioni's signature films: "L'avventura", "La notte", "L'eclisse", "Red Desert", "Blow-Up", and "The Passenger". While this list is far from comprehensive, it gives a very thorough analysis of the "classic Antonioni". Even those familiar with Antonioni will find this book to be very useful. An excellent addition to any film-lover's library, no matter if s/he is a novice or a film professor. Also look for Brunette on the commentary track of the "Blow-Up" DVD.

Customer Reviews:
Really, really, really funny.......2007-09-21
I happened on this series by sheer luck. John Zakour is a master of the noir fantasy. Taking place in the 2060 time frame, we finally have antigravity cars, but he's old school with a Ford Mustang and an attitude, and a hot girlfriend. What more does a shamus need? Oh, yeah, a cybernetic connection to the worlds greatest computer. I enjoyed the book a lot, and went out and bought the rest of the series. My only gripe is that the next book was due out August 17, but they changed it to Christmas.
Super Reader.......2007-09-01
I didn't find this book as much fun as the first one.
Zachary Nixion Johnson has problems in quadruplicate, in the form of four super powered sisters. One of them going the crazed evil super villain route.
He has a bit of a computer issue, as well.
All this means that his enhancer bracelets and other gadgets get a fair bit more of a workout in this book.
Interesting sci-fi twist on WhoDunIt? .......2007-07-24
Zachary Nixon Johnson is the last private eye on Earth - and he wouldn't have it any other way. When he receives a call at 3 am from Ona Thompson - the richest being on the planet - he really has no option but to do as she directs and come to her complex. There he finds her in the company of her siblings - Twoa, Threa and Fora. Of course, there is a problem - Fora is dead. This is made even more problematic because the Quads (as they are called) are nigh-invulnerable, having been genetically created by their genius father to be beautiful, intelligent and superior in every way. This resulted in their skin being slightly purple, but that only enhances their charm.
Zach has to discover who killed Fora, and how it was accomplished. This is easier said than done, since it appears that almost everyone had not only the desire to murder her, but also means and opportunity.
The book is filled with terrific characters - most notably the Quads themselves. Ona inherited her father's wealth, so she is a super-model and play-girl. Twoa is a super-hero - seriously - cape and everything. Threa is a fairy queen - she even has nymphs to follow her around. Fora was (to Zach) the most normal as an anarcho-goth who preached the dangers of materialism in New Vegas.
HARV - Zach's computerized personal assistant - develops a keep interest in detecting in this novel and begins to change his appearance as a result, with often quite amusing results.
Then there is W, the ancient butler who specializes in table setting; Opie, the silver-back mountain gorilla who has been genetically altered to have human intelligence and is a fan of practical jokes; the Pfauhans, who are identical "twin" cousins named Sturm and Drang who look like Teutonic power houses but have a shocking secret . . . as well as the return of Randy, Carol, Electra Gevada and Tony Rickey. There is also an amusing character in the person of the coroner, whose name has slipped my mind at the nano - he refuses to call anyone by name, as he feels that would personalize people and keep him from doing his job properly. Zakour has a true genius when it comes to creating memorable and interesting characters!
These books are wonderful works of cross-genre fiction, mixing science fiction with PI noir in a delightful concoction that is sure to please fans of both types of books, as well as fans of a well-concocted bit of word play. Zakour has a lot of fun with language and it shows in his writing. This book is a definite "don't miss" from me!
Very good SF/detective story.......2005-02-03
Set in the middle of the 21st century, the Thompson Quads (short for quadruplets) are genetically engineered to be stronger, smarter, more beautiful and alluring, more everything than the average person. Ona, Twoa, Threa and Foraa (seriously) are supposed to be the pinnacle of humanity, but their personalities never caught up with their bodies. During a private dinner at Ona's private compound, attempting to patch up disagreements between them (which have grown to the size of the Grand Canyon), Foraa falls to the floor, dead, and apparently poisoned.
Enter Zachary Nixon Johnson, the world's last freelance private investigator. The wine Foraa was drinking when she collapsed tests negative for all known poisons. An autopsy on Foraa is impossible because her skin, like that of her sisters, is impregnable to outside objects, including scalpels, saws, and even lasers used on asteroids. Johnson, who is assisted in his investigation by HARV, the world's most sophisticated supercomputer hardwired into his brain, doesn't lack for suspects.
Perhaps the killer was aiming for Ona (she inherited all of Daddy's money when he died, and has become an arrogant, overbearing you-know-what) and miscalculated. After much investigation, and narrowly surviving an attack by a cybernetic suit of armor, Johnson feels the case is solved. During what is supposed to be the climatic scene, where the hardboiled PI calls together all the suspects in order to reveal the murderer, Johnson gets a call from the morgue. Foraa has woken up, gotten off the autopsy table and left. The final battle of the book takes place in a New Vegas casino that happens to be built on top of a real doomsday device, built by Daddy before he died.
Fans of hardboiled detective novels will enjoy this story; science fiction fans will also enjoy it. The authors do a fine job throughout and this is well worth reading.
not your average SF& Hard Boiled Detective novel.......2004-10-11
I was first caught by the title, then by the wonderful cover art which does a fine job of capturing the quintessential look of a period Pulp Fiction magazine. The content is no less entertaining. Not many authors have been able to carry off a classic Hard Boiled Detective novel (or even less a Detective/Mystery novel) in the Science Fiction vein. It was an easy and entertaining read. I occasionally thumbed a few pages back to re-read a particulary amusing or well-written scene.....My only regret is that this was the *first* one I read and that I haven't read the first book. Even though I'm reading out of order hasn't diminished my enjoyment a Nano!

Improves one's mind.......2004-08-26
"Kissing your hand may make you feel very good but a diamond bracelet lasts forever." So says Lorelei Lee in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes." With the emergence of Lorelei, Anita Loos invented the chick-lit genre as we know it, with witty looks at love, jewelry, and gold-digging in the sparkling 1920s.
"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is the diary of Lorelei Lee, a pretty young flapper originally from Little Rock. Since she has managed to get engaged to a married man, and might be hit with a scandal, Lorelei goes overseas. She cuts a gold-digging swathe through Europe, dazzling wealthy men, seeing the "Eyefull" Tower, and recording thoughts both witty and vapid.
Loos followed up her hit novel with "But Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes." The sequel is the story of Lorelei's travelling buddy Dorothy, as told by Lorelei. Dorothy has led a more colorful life -- she started off in the circus before heading to NYC. There, she became a Ziegfield Follies Girl, and then a "companion" to wealthy men.
Anita Loos's "Gentlemen" books first started when Loos encountered a starlet who had men tripping over themselves to help her with her things. Loos was as pretty, as young, and much smarter, but nobody helped her. What was different? Loos was a brunette, and the starlet was a blonde. You do the math.
Loos had a fun, deft sense of humor. She skewered flappers and/or gold-diggers, wealthy men, and the social mores of the 1920s. She also deliberately litters her books with misspellings and run-on sentences, adding to the feeling of overal ditziness. At the same time, her books are such good light fun that they can be read without taking note of the satire.
"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" gives a wink-nudge look at the flapper era, while giving us the origins of the present-day lite chick-lit genre. Fun, fluffy and amusing.
Utterly entertaining.......2004-06-22
This is a great little book (actually, two books in one). I laughed put loud throughout it and hoped that it would never end. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is rightly considered a classic, its sharp and bitingly witty insight is something one never seems to see in a book today (indeed, humour in a book today seems to be rare - sometimes it seems that all new fiction books are depressing and morbid; and if you feel this way too then you should read Loos' clever and refreshing novels). This is a classuc that you will want to read over and over.
Wry, funny and timeless.......2003-09-12
If you appreciate wry humor and satire, wonderfully written, this is the book for you. A quick read that never disappoints. Every gentleman should read this by the time he turns 25.
What a star.......2002-07-03
Which came first, Damon Runyon or Anita Loos? Whatever, this is a brilliant book that gets funnier as Loos hits her stride. By the time she gets to Dorothy's adventures she's well away. It's not just the language and the gags but the concrete observation - Dorothy isn't just discovered sitting in the doorway of Pearl Lo Vino's tent, she's found sitting there watching Pearl crochet a boudoir cap. Writers, take note!
Classic humor!.......2001-06-13
I adored this book! I purchased it because I'd seen both of the movies, but the book is so much wittier! I'd recommend it to anyone with an extremely sophisticated sense of humor, otherwise it would be hard to understand - not for lightweights!
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre.......2007-01-07
This book is a good read if you would like to know how Wong departs from genre conventions and/or specific but general interpretations of his films by the author. However, you will slowly realize that most of the information presented in this book is re-iterated in other essays about Wong. Therefore, I would have been more satisfied with this purchase if it were to have presented more and 'newer' information, such as theories and references to other cinematic figures and scenes.
Informative Study.......2006-12-20
Honestly written. Unpretentious yet intelligent. Brunette does not reach for dazzling overstatements, but instead keeps his claims conservative and convincing. Of particular interest is his discussion of Wong's recycling of and departure from genre conventions.
A Cinema Genius..........2006-11-10
Wong Kar-wai is one of the most interesting and innovative directors since the French New Wave, and this collection of nearly all of his pre-"In The Mood For Love" films is well worth owning. These are all movies whose artistic and philosophic dimensions never seem to exhaust themselves...a rare thing in contemporary cinema...and a great reason to own this set...
Good collection of essays.......2005-07-31
Thought provoking essays on most of his films up to this point

Customer Reviews:
this book was great.......2006-08-14
I loved the first book, i was a non blonde cheer leader, so i got brunettes strike back. I thought it wasnt going to be as good but i was wrong! it was great!! i loved it!
Average.......2006-06-02
I really enjoyed the first book in this series.
Unfortunately, Brunettes Strike Back was just not as charming and funny as the first one.
Our main heroine is back and she is in love with Daniel - but does he belong to someone else?
While the storyline was enjoyable, it felt contrived to me and I miss the spontaneity of the first book. The writing style is great as always, but for some reason, this one did not grab me.
