Book Description

Faced with increasing global competition, every industry, business, and service organization is restructuring itself to operate more effectively. Cost-effectiveness and product reliability without excess capacity are the keys to successful activity in business, industry, and government, and these keys are the end results of methods engineering.

The 11th edition of Methods, Standards, and Work Design provides practical, up-to-date descriptions of engineering methods to measure, analyze, and design manual work. The text emphasizes both the manual components and the cognitive aspects of work, recognizing the gradual decline of the manufacturing sector and the growth of the service sector. The importance of ergonomics and work design as part of methods engineering is emphasized not only to increase productivity, but also to improve worker health and safety, and thus, company bottom-line costs.

Learn alot from the book about Project management. It does not only apply to management but apply to daily life. It teaches you more than there is. Definitely recommended.

I got the book on the first day that it was expexted to arrive and its in great shape.

4 out of 5 stars 11th edition.......2002-08-30

I am one of the professors Dr. Seifert is talking about in his review. I continue to use this textbook in both graduate and undergraduate classes on job design. Every semester I search for a better alternative, but am unable to find it. I find this book to be helpful and a good reference that incorporates ergonomics, work design, and methods engineering. (I also use old versions of the lab book that contain very well-made forms.) This text contains the best discussion of time standards I have seen. The 11th edition contains a new chapter on cognitive work. This is a topic I have always discussed and am glad to see formal treatment of it in the new edition. As with any textbook, I do not use it as the sole source of information taught in the classroom and would not recommend it as a sole source. I use the topics in the text to launch discussions and research papers on systems theory, lean, cycle time, environmental, process improvement methodologies, ethics, and other issues for manufacturing and non-shopfloor applications. I find the book especially useful in the area of work design and time standards.

Students have found these skills useful in the workplace. Many of our students work in process improvement and lean implementations. They use these skills to reduce cycle time and balance the lines to meet the demands of customers. Good implementation of lean requires knowledge of how to balance a line to meet customer demand, identify constraints, reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, understanding and dealing with change, cost/benefit analysis, and a direct understanding the relationship between the customer demand and production rate. This text touches on or covers in detail these topics.

I find that the book appears to focus on machine and operator efficiency and utilization, has a primarily decompositional view of work, and concentrates mostly on shopfloor operations. Even with these drawbacks, the text gives the reader solid information on improving workplace design and reducing cycle time while improving worker safety and productivity. I use the discussion on machine and worker utilization to compare and contrast with other manufacturing philosophies, and to relate what the text is covering to more 'big picture' aspects. Other topics not included are a good discussion of maintenance operations and quality. I suggest using other sources to incorporate those topics. All in all, the book is not perfect. It is a very good reference book and text book.

1 out of 5 stars 1955 Concepts in 1999 Edition.......2000-10-07

This antiquated textbook is still used at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The first edition of this book was published in 1955 and, after nine more editions, appears largely unchanged in its mentality. Specifically, the textbook is written for a time when corporations had legions of industrial engineers who did nothing but detailed and tedious time and motion studies. Unfortunately, today's dynamic manufacturing environment renders many of the authors' techniques impractical or even financially hazardous. For example, it emphasizes the need to maximize machine utilization (even if the machine is not considered a bottleneck operation). Practices like these lead to excessive inventory and sub-optimization of the collective manufacturing process. In summary, I believe this textbook does a great disservice to those manufacturing firms that have achieved dramatic productivity gains through the application of lean manufacturing techniques.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth the buy!.......2004-04-02

I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.

5 out of 5 stars A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02

This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.

3 out of 5 stars Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30

This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.

5 out of 5 stars A matchless guide.......2003-08-03

While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.

5 out of 5 stars Application Oriented.......2003-07-01

In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!

Book Description

The ability to bring new and innovative products to market rapidly is the prime critical competence for any successful consumer-driven company. All industries, especially automotive, are slashing product development lead times in the current hyper-competitive marketplace. This book is the first to thoroughly examine and analyze the truly effective product development methodology that has made Toyota the most forward-thinking company in the automotive industry.

In The Toyota Product Development System: Integrating People, Process, and Technology, James Morgan and Jeffrey Liker compare and contrast the world-class product development process of Toyota with that of a U.S. competitor. They use extensive examples from Toyota and the U.S. competitor to demonstrate value stream mapping as an extraordinarily powerful tool for continuous improvement.

Through examples and case studies, this book illustrates specific techniques and proven practices for dealing with challenges associated with product development, such as synchronizing multiple disciplines, multiple function workload leveling, compound process variation, effective technology integration, and knowledge management.

This valuable book:

Highlights the application of value stream mapping methodology to product development. Identifies and defines the categories of waste that are specific to the product development process. Presents countermeasures and proven practices, based on Lean principles, developed for the product development process used at Toyota. Illustrates and clarifies the methodology by presenting actual case examples at Toyota and a U.S. competitor.

Readers of this book can focus on optimizing the entire product development value stream rather than focus on a specific tool or technology for local improvements.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those who want to study the next product development frontier!.......2007-06-18

This book is based on lean product development in the automotive world and has some shortcomings when it comes to applying what Toyota does to other industries. However, with Toyota's success lately their are few arguments against not studying how Toyota approaches product development and applying it to our specific industries. I think the hardest thing for most American companies will be having the long-term discipline to implement what Toyota has done.

1 out of 5 stars Academic Review of New Product Development.......2007-05-28

Although this book is very popular today, the authors offer no new approaches to new product development. Companies should strive to leapfrog Toyota. Similarly to Demmings' focus on quality, every aspect of Toyota's NPD process was first developed in the USA, which still ranks as the World's leading innovation source.

5 out of 5 stars Best book about Toyota PD.......2007-05-08

This is the third book I've read about Toyota and by far the best one. I'm an engineering manager and found dozens of simple, new ideas in this book. This is a very thorough & practical guide to the inside workings of Toyota's PD system. There are many examples and sufficient details that you can easily understand them and also try to implement them in your own organization.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for OEM........2007-04-05

Very interesting topics covered. Strongly recommended for engineers in the automotive industry.

5 out of 5 stars Product Development the way it should be.......2007-01-10

I have recently started to work in product development for the telecommunications industry and this book has been an excellent guide to learn and improve the product development process. The concept of Front Loading the development process is applicable immediately, and the rest of concepts like process flows, waste reduction, standardization, and the Chief Engineer System definitely enhance product development in any industry.

Examples from the automobile industry allows easy understanding on how the development process affects physical elements and a lot of time saving practices provide very useful knowledge.

This book will surely improve your product development skills and will help you understand how to make it better and faster.

I'm a lighting design major in college, and no matter what I take a class in, Gillette's book is the standard must have for all tech (and acting) majors. It's a requirement for stage tech 1, and then is used again through out the college carreer, and I have heard people even refrence it after they graduate. The best places to start for new techies are this book, and the 'backstage handbook'

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2007-08-23

If you know anything about Cinema 4D you will be very disappointed. It is really a First time beginner's book. The only good thing is that it goes through different parts of the software, like rig animation and UVs.
What really bothered me is that the chapters are huge, and uses pages and pages to explaining little details. But as i said, if you are the real beginner, you will enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Lost in translation.......2007-08-15

The things they have you build look really cool, but the big wrench in the works for this book is its sloppy, inaccurate translation to English. You really have to move through it super-slowly, watching for potential mistakes. Having said that, I did get through the first tutorial on modeling a G5 Mac, but only at a snail's pace because of the translation.

Another complaint -- they continually reference screen-shots that aren't on the same page, so for instance, they say "Do this, like in fig. 8.5", and fig. 8.5 is on the next page, while directly above the instructions is fig. 8.4. The whole book is like that, with the pictures lagging one or two pages behind the text.

If you're just getting started in C4D, I'd look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Cinema 4D 10 Workshop.......2007-07-10

Im a motion graphics designer and decided to upgrade my knowledge using 3D and found out that Cinema 4D is easy to use. I tried and downloaded several tutorials in the internet and most of them are very helpful and I learned the basics in Cinema 4D. However, there are some aspects of this tool that is quite hard to find in the web (advance topics)and so I decided to purchase a book.

I found this book and I was quite disappointed in several of its projects/tutorials. The steps are not well-written. Usually, most of them are shortcuts, it doesn't give you the step-by-step procedure on how to accomplish a task. Perhaps, if you're an advanced user of Cinema 4D you would understand it, but if you're a beginnner, then you would have a hard time accomplishing the projects.

Now Im planning to buy another cinema 4d book the one written by anne powers.I hope that this one would be really helpful and easy to understand.

3 out of 5 stars almost satisfied.......2007-06-27

Although the tutorials are very good, they are very hard to follow, there are no numbered tutorials, they are made in paragraphs, so you find yourself reading an entire paragraph which at the end you already know.
Some important little details are sometimes forgotten so you spend a long time going back and experimenting until your result looks like the result in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Good book for modeller.......2007-05-12

The print quality is very good. Nice tutorials for modeller. Lacks any in depth information for animator/special fx. Pity...

A very comprehensive manual (31 chapters, over 500 pages) for any level of facilty management professional. Each chapter is written by practicing professionals and "expert" consultants. Given that the field of FM covers so many areas, it is useful to have many different perspectives from professionals in the field formed into one big book. Chapters are grouped into phases of FM disciplines, i.e, planning, design, management, technology. There are high level topics such as Strategic Facility Planning, Sustainable Design, Portfolio Management and Business Transformation. Also very detailed, nuts & bolts for topics such as Financial Management for FM's, Energy Management, System Implementation for CMMS (Maintenance systems, Benchmarking, Condition Assessment, and case studies for CAFM technology. Brief chapter summaries are provided to assist reader with content coverage. There are lots of graphics/figures which help readability of this thick book, as well as a CD with websites and templates for RFP's, standards and process related functions.

    Book Description

Many of the great modern classic furniture designs of the twentieth century are still in production and available to the public in America and abroad. There are also many recent designs destined to become classics, because they share many of the same qualities of modern furniture already in museum collections and sought after by collectors. This volume, with 600 color photographs and detailed captions of a representative sample of the best modern furniture available, is the first source book to focus only on designs that are currently in production, and to present them in full color. It is both a history of modern design and an international shopping catalog. The indexes of 250 designers and companies and the list of sources will enable the reader to locate each item for purchase or for additional information. This book will serve as an indispensable and handy reference for decorators, interior designers, architects, and collectors, plus acquaint the general public with extraordinary designs that are generally only known to the trade.

    Book Description

This book shows how to design products for all aspects of manufacturability and use multifunctional product development teams and Concurrent Engineering principles to:

DESIGN FOR LOW COST. The book shows how to actually design low-cost products. Chapters 1, 2,and 9 show how to minimize the 80% of a product's cost that is committed by the design and hard to remove later. Chapters 3 and 8 show how to optimize the concept/architecture stage where 60% of cost is committed. Chapters 6 and 7 shows dozens of ways to minimize and measure total cost.

DESIGN IN HIGH QUALITY. Chapter 10 shows how to design quality and reliability into the product with poka-yoke and 50 design guidelines.

DESIGN FOR LEAN MANUFACTURE. Chapter 4 shows how to design products for all the flexible paradigms: lean production, JIT, build-to-order, and mass customization. Chapter 5 presents very effective standardization tools.

DESIGN QUICKLY FOR FAST PRODUCTION. Chapter 3 shows how thorough up-front work is the key to quickly developing products, avoiding changes, & fast ramps. Over 200 design guidelines are presented with the latest new methodologies from the author's DFM seminars and consulting.

    BOOK OUTLINE

    Part I: Design Methodology

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of design for manufacturability and shows the problems that can be avoided when products are designed for manufacturability. It also shows how to overcome resistance, understand the myths and realities of product development, and motivate engineers and managers to design for manufacturability and do it right the first time.

The chapter concludes with benefits of DFM.

Chapter 2 shows how to use concurrent engineering to develop products in multi-functional design teams lead by an empowered team leader. Such teams are most effective when they have early and active participation of all specialties. The chapter shows the problems when this does not happen and how to ensure availability of resources. Just as Chapter 1 showed that the majority of the cost is committed by the concept, the key to getting products quickly to market is a thoroughly optimized concept/architecture phase. Product development phases are presented with the tasks that enable good DFM including: defining products to satisfy the voice of the customer with QFD; optimizing the product architecture and strategies for operations and supply chains; raising and resolving the issues early; concurrently designing the product and processes; and launching into production.

Chapter 3, Design for Everything, focuses early on a wide scope of design considerations. Early work on these considerations will minimize arbitrary decisions, which will reduce several categories of risk and minimize change orders. The chapter also shows how to use creativity and brainstorming to develop better products.

    Part II: Flexibility

Chapter 4 shows how to design products for lean production, build-to-order and mass customization

Chapter 5 shows very effective procedures to standardize parts and materials.

    Part III: Cost Reduction

Chapter 6 emphasizes the importance of minimizing the total cost and then shows many ways to minimize total cost by design.

Chapter 7 emphasizes the importance of quantifying total cost and then shows easy ways to measure total cost.

    Part IV: Design Guidelines

Chapter 8 presents 64 design guidelines for product design, including assembly, fastening, test, repair, and maintenance.

Chapter 9 presents 42 design guidelines for designing parts including how to design fabricated parts and parts to be handled by automation. The chapter also has a section on tolerance step functions and how to specify optimal tolerances.

    Part V: Customer Satisfaction

Chapter 10 shows how to design in quality and reliability with 28 quality guidelines and sections on mistake-proofing (poka-yoke) and designing to minimize errors. The chapter also shows product q

Good content although additional graphics would make the concepts easier to absorb. For a second edition, there is an astounding number of typos & grammatical errors, often 4-5 on the same page, giving the impression that it was rushed through production or compiled without a word-processor. I think the publishers could learn from some of the quality tips covered in the book!

This book saved my company. I am going to get a giant DFM tattoo across my shoulder. David Andersen is welcome at my company or in my living room any time of the year. I started a company with my advisor out of college and we *struggled* for 5 years to get things working. Let me tell you, this book changed everything. I gave a presentation on it that was more of a book report and everybody was on board. The way we choose vendors, the way we work with vendors, the way we ask, obsessively, all the questions up front, before we even commit to a design architecture, has changed our lives and refreshed our spirits. Mockups, vendor phone calls, impromptu team meetings, it all makes sense now. Everything they never taught us engineers in college. They taught us to design for functionality, not manufacturability. He is so right! Andersen "gets it". And there are like hundreds of DFM rules for all sorts of topics in the appendix. Read it, adopt it, present it, print out hte rules and staple them up all over. Things now work right, we screw 'em together and they work. Voila! Thank you Andersen! Buy this, everybody who's been burned by poor design. Buy this.

This is a book I should've had many years ago. What I found interesting with this book is the fact that it supports many of the arguments that have included in the subject I am dealing with. I regret not buying it earlier as I struggled with issues such as DFM and DFA and how they can improve the bottom line of an aerospace enterprise. What I also like about this book is that it goes straight into the subject, rather than going on and on over abstract concepts and theories that are not at everyone's reach. I always say that people in the industry don't have time for long and endless theories, they want the facts and answers on how they can improve (when they realize they need to improve to stay in business). I have to say that this book answers just that.

    Book Description

While the last version of iMovie gave moviemakers the ability to capture and edit widescreen High Definition Video (HDV) from the new generation of camcorders, iMovie 6 is all about the ease of moviemaking itself. iMovie 6 includes five professionally designed themes with backgrounds, motion graphics, titles, and effects that act as building blocks for your projects. You can preview transitions and stunning new video effects--such as time-lapse video--in real time using the full screen. Or edit audio and add sound effects with a new built-in sound studio. For presenting your movie, Magic iDVD offers easy-to-use themes, including new widescreen options.

Whether you're a professional or an amateur moviemaker, this is amazing stuff. But if you want to learn the full capabilities of these applications, Apple documentation won't make the cut. Instead, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual is the ideal third-party authority that covers all of these changes through an objective lens. This witty and entertaining guide from celebrated author David Pogue details every step of iMovie 6 and iDVD production. The book shows you how to:

From choosing and using a digital camcorder to burning the finished work onto DVDs, posting it online, or downloading it to an iPod, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual zooms right in on the details in a clear, concise, and understandable manner. The book also provides a firm grounding in basic film technique so that the quality of your video won't rely entirely on magic.

    4 out of 5 stars iMovie 6 & iDVD: The missing Manual.......2007-10-03

Having Missing Manuals 3 to 5 It is again most difficult to find what's new in Apples Version 6 amongst all the older information contained in the previously published "Manuals". If one was purchasing it for the first time it does a reasonable job.

5 out of 5 stars Great Step by Step Guide.......2007-06-27

This book is a thoroughly attentive-to-detail manual that is true to it's name/concept: The manual that *should* have come in the box! It clearly walks you through every step, big and small as well as including sections on how to improve your filming, editing, and a concise Quicktime how-to.

I recommend reading the entire book before starting an iMovie/iDVD project but if you just can't wait (I couldn't-- I read as I went), I recommend reading Appendix B (pg. 461) which is "Troubleshooting" early on . It includes *many* crucial tips from being sure to format your external HD to Mac OS Extended (if saving on an ext. HD) to switching the factory-setting 12-bit audio on your digital video camera to 16-bit to common 'glitches' while importing, working with or exporting footage.

The other great benefit of this book is it explains the various little 'tricks' for more complicated tasks or for things that are hinky and need a little fiddling to work. One ex.: You use the new iMovie 6 themes w/in iMovie (Pass Through, especially, is slick/professional-looking!) and are trying to use a *trimmed* clip w/in the theme. iMovie doesn't understand starting it where you trimmed because it keeps the trimmed portion of the clip hidden but still there so the undesirable portion of your clip is shown in the intro theme instead. This book explains in detail how to save it to Quicktime and re-import the new *permanently* trimmed clip to use w/ no problems in your themed intro!

This book also spells out the key differences in iMovie 6 vs. previous versions. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are looking to edit home movie footage (or other) using iMovie (& iDVD) and don't have your own personal Mac Genius in your household. :-)

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my life... in a roundabout way.......2007-05-14

I recently purchased a Mac and edited my first film - a short documentary - on iMovie.

I had never used iMovie before and a good friend recommended this book and I couldn't have been more pleased. I haven't encountered a problem yet that this book hasn't addressed.

    Well-written, simple and practical.

A great resource. Worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "how to" manuals I've bought.......2007-04-19

I have to admit that I was skeptical when I saw that this was a textbook for an introductory filmmaking class but it's an awesome book. It strikes just the right tone and is basically a short course in filming, editing and distributing (dvd, web, email) movies. Well done.

    5 out of 5 stars Quite simply-THE BEST.......2007-04-03

Simple and darn articulate. Im not a tech person in any sense of the way, Mr Pogue has outdone himself. He indeed has made understanding imovie very simple. Highly recommended if you are just starting out or if you wish to brush up on the latest version of Imovie

3 out of 5 stars Is OK, but there are better options........2006-11-10

I have the pleasure of taking a seminar with the author, but I was disappointed at his writing. The book is hard to follow, and lack structure.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly Better Than Stage-Gate.......2006-08-21

Ulrich has created an understandable companion text for product development. What is refreshing about this text is that it guides the developer through the elements of product development that are essential to reducing the concept of the product to practice. It is a great instructional guide.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference text.......2005-03-16

This is a good reference manual for understanding the various techniques that are available for the fuzzy front end of product design. It would be a good text for project managers in product development.

    PROs
    1) It is well written and easy to assimilate.
    2) Seems complete for the traditional manufactured consumer product.

    CONs
    1) Not strong on a current pre-emptive DFSS techniques for robustness and quality (such as QFD and axiomatic design).
    2) Does not address system complexity issues and tools (software vs hardware, interface issues, complexity, functional flows).

4 out of 5 stars Great product development handbook!.......2004-01-04

This book provides a great hands-on approach to product development. Unlike other product development books that dwell too much on the philosophical aspects of product development, this book gives you practical advice on how to define meaningful product specifications to meet your customer needs and develop successful products. The book provides a very nice concept development process that I've found very useful.

This book is mainly focused on product development processes and does not provide much information on technology development. In addition, the book lacks depth in the strategic aspects of product development(such as market segmentation, strategic management of technology).

If you are looking for a very useful and powerful handbook for product development, this is the book you are looking for. However, if you are interested in the strategic aspects of product development, you may need other references.

5 out of 5 stars great for teaching at any level, great methods.......2002-09-26

I have used this book extensively to teach undergraduate industrial design students, and graduate marketing, and engineering students who take small product development courses. It's focused, down to earth, practical, and students find they can grasp design issues better than in a more theoretical-philosophical way. I use it myself to guide my design consulting work, has helped me understand other product development (not design) issues that are relevant to me, and I have read it over and over.. great handbook. Production/design of the book is also very nice. It's a pitty McGraw Hill doesn't want to translate it to spanish (so the author told me once).
