Book Description

The guns, the girls, the gadgets, all the key ingredients of Bond --James Bond -- are captured in this one-of-a-kind collection of movie posters. Gathered from the archives of Eon Productions and published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Bond movies and the release of the newest James Bond movie, James Bond Movie Posters depicts in hot type and bold color four decades of our favorite spy in action. Film-goers first encountered the trademark gun barrel logo on the poster for Dr. No, produced in 1962 to promote the first official Bond movie. Then followed the famous image of Bond with a gun across his chest on the poster for From Russia with Love, Goldfinger's startling golden girl, and the inimitable Pussy Galore. These images have become some of the most memorable visual teasers in cinematic history and are now one of the hottest items of memorabilia among both Bond aficionados and movie collectors. This collection features over 200 original posters, including posters that were never released, limited edition festival posters, and rare advance posters. They are all meticulously reproduced in this oversized, full-color paperback. "James Bond is back in action! Everything he touches turns to excitement!"

This updated edition includes:
- Poster artwork from the latest James Bond movie, Die Another Day
- Extended introduction on the evolving imagery and influence of James Bond posters

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-14

I bought this book as a present for the huge James Bond fan in my life and it was perfect. He really enjoyed looking at all of the classic posters from the various movies. If you have someone who really is a Bond fanatic, this is the way to go!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it!.......2007-02-12

I bought this for my husband's birthday, he's a HUGE Bond fan...he was really excited about this book, and i was impressed with the large format and the posters from around the world for the different Bond films. Definitely worth buying, even as a book to leave on the coffee table for people to flip through.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection of James Bond Movie Posters.......2006-12-01

This is a wonderful collection of James Bond Movie Posters. The illustrations and quality of the images are outstanding. They are crisp and sharp and very colorful. This book covers Bond posters from all over the world. The composition of the Japanese posters are quite eye catching and innovative. This is a wonderful and essential book for James Bond enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars How times have changed...........2006-11-22

I am echoing another reviewer in lamenting the sorry state of movie posters in 2006. The Octopussy campaign from 1983 was simply stunning as the myriad posters in this volume show at least 3-4 different pieces of artwork, each one beautifully painted and in keeping with the Indian theme. The use of Octopussy herself as a Hindu goddess behind Bond was brilliant.

Compare that to the current ad campaign for Casino Royale -- which is virtually indistinguishable from a Gucci billboard. It says nothing about the film, its minimalism ill-conceived and simply lazy. Worse still was the "Die Another Day" poster which was quite simply four layerrs in Photoshop: Pierce and Halle, a background, and the type layer. Moreover a simple type-treatment for the title, nothing like the individualized logotype for a film such as Octopussy. I could go on... This is a gorgeous book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent chronical of James Bond movie posters.......2005-08-27

I just received this fantastic James Bond poster collection book and I have to say, this is indispensable stuff, going all the way from Dr NO to Die Another Day, and even including oddities like Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again. Author Tony Nourmand has clearly put a great amount of effort and research into the making of this book, and it shows. Beautifully presented, this has quickly turned out to be one of my preferred movie books. Showcasing classic posters from some of the leading graphic artists of the 1970s and 80s like Robert McGinnis (Live and Let Die and The Man with The Golden Gun are amazing), Bob Peak (Moonraker), Frank McCarthy, Renato Casaro and Randi Braun, their collective works culminate in a lavishly presented masterwork that looks fantastic. Footnotes on subtle changes that were made to some late 70s movie posters are particularly welcome, as are the informative and interesting introductions that accompany the film-based chapters. The Sean Connery films for instance, comprise extensive thoughts from Nourmand talking about discarded poster ideas and how the change of leading man from Connery to George Lazenby caused some marketing concerns. It's not difficult to see why some of the early posters like From Russia With Love are sought after by collectors, these highly prized masterpieces are worth thousands by today's market. Being a poster collector myself, I've found that this is a particularly lucrative hobby. Theses are not just your average, run of the mill images, these are works of art that look beautiful on the wall. Poster layouts for the Roger Moore era are the most elaborate, indicating the change in times, Britain and America's quickly changing tastes, and the myriad of factors that are involved in this particular art. Foreign posters from Japan and Spain display the differential takes on how these particular films should be marketed, and the changes that were made by more conservative global regions to the more sexually suggestive artwork. Reading it, one notices the gradual change from traditional watercolor artwork to photo mosaics and stylish computer-aided photography. Which is, arguably less impressive, but mostly, the posters for the new Pierce Brosnan films do carry on the subtle nuances and certain recognizable M.O that is so popular. This is must-have material for 007 fans and poster fans alike and inspiration for aspiring artists in the field of movies.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the art?.......2007-05-12

This is my first review and unfortunately it's a stinker. I'm a concept artist and a James Bond fan, so I eagerly anticipated the arrival of this book. When I finally got it, I skimmed through the many pages just to get an initial impression. It wasn't good. I asked myself repeatedly, "where's the artwork?" -- where's the many conceptual sketches, prop designs, miniatures, paintings, novel illustrations, etc. Don't get me wrong, the book does contain such content, but only to a surprising minimal degree. The book should be more accurately titled, Bond: A Derivative Photo Album. Most all of the content is comprised of snap-shots from newer movies.

If you are an artist I would not recommend this. In fact, avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must read' for all James Bond fans!.......2007-02-09

It's hard to easily peg this title: readers interested in James Bond, film history, and art will equally find plenty fascinating in THE ART OF BOND: FROM STORYBOARD TO SCREEN - THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEHIND THE JAMES BOND PHENOMENON. Those who have participated in the Bond ideal, from writers to designers and producers, here share their memories and experiences working on some of the major films which made Bond a popular figure. All twenty-one Bond films are included in a survey which pairs color photos with history and captures the exciting works and challenges of bringing Bond to life. It's a pick not just for film and art libraries, but for general-interest collections - and a 'must read' for all James Bond fans!

This a very well done photo essay of the history of James Bond. I would recommend it to every James Bond fan.

I bought this for my brother for Christmas. The first time it arrived the cover was worn. So I let Amazon know and they sent me another right away (in time for Christmas again). Although the second one was better the cover still looked worn. I just thought for such a nice product on the inside, the outside didn't look so great.

Book Description

Following his adventures in the Scottish Highlands, James Bond is back at Eton, where he has joined the risk-taking Danger Society. Summer vacation is on the horizon and James is looking forward to the school trip to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia, and the opportunity to spend some time with his reclusive cousin Victor. But all is not as it appears. James soon discovers that the seemingly peaceful island harbors some strange secrets. Before long, Victor's house has been ransacked and important pieces of artwork have been stolen. James learns that the Millennaria—a ruthless Roman society long thought to be extinguished—is still active. He suspects the impetuous millionaire Count Ugo Carnifex may be behind it. But one of his teachers has been acting strangely as well….As a young girl's life hangs in the balance, it's up to James to uncover an intricate conspiracy that will take him head-to-head with enemies more ruthless than he could have ever imagined.

5 out of 5 stars Even more action and suspense..........2007-06-19

Thirteen year-old James Bond is pulled into another adventure. This time, James stumbles upon a dangerous secret society at his own school. When his teacher and some of his classmates decide to visit Sardinia over a break, James tags along. He has a nearly takes a fatal fall at their archeological dig site, and James suspects one of his professors. James then leaves his group to stay with his uncle who lives nearby. But danger soon follows, and James discovers a conspiracy involving the secret society, pirates, and a power-hungry monarch.

In this second Young Bond adventure, there is even more action and suspense. Blood Fever definitely has the feel of a true James Bond story. James gets captured, (mildly) tortured, and even has a girl to save. Higson has done a wonderful job of staying true to Bond's character, while making him a much more innocent young man. And the secondary characters are remarkably vivid and exciting. Both children and adults who love action and adventure will love this series.

Blood Fever
By: Charlie Higson

The main character in the story is James Bond and he is a boy who is adventurous and likes to be sneaky at school. He also likes to be in secret clubs like the danger club.

When James Bond goes on a field trip he is on a exploration with a friend from school and on the trip with enemies. He encounters a group of men and gets knocked out. He also meets a big criminal who wants to kill him and watch him suffer.

The setting of the story is in a school, in a carnival, in a mansion and they were all in the middle east.

The theme was about bravery, greed, and death. The story was about bravery because James had to be brave to save the girl that was trapped. It was about greed because two big criminals were fighting for a big treasure. The story was about death because one of James's friends died and that was very big for James.

I liked the story because I like action and adventure type books and this book is very good and once I started reading I couldn't stop. Another reason I liked the book is because it had some parts that were very sad witch quickly changed into anger.

IF you like action or adventure I would suggest you read Young Bond Book #3: Double or Die

4 out of 5 stars Another exciting adventure for Young Bond.......2007-02-11

Once again, Charlie Higson has written an action packed adventure that will have tween readers talking! We purchased this one after reading Silverfin and it did not disappoint. The action is a little more intense in the sequel and young James attracts some female attention this time. (C'mon, moms - you knew it had to happen sooner or later!) Even so, it was still within reason for my 10 year old and his friends. We are looking forward to many more installments in the Young James Bond series.

Book Description

"Before Bond, the parts I used to play in films were demure, sweet, antiseptic and antisex. I wasn't even allowed to think like a woman. Pussy Galore and 007 worked wonders for me."-Honor Blackman, Pussy Galore, Goldfinger

Sexy, stunning, bold, and brazen, the women in James Bond movies are among the most interesting females in films. Attacked by some feminists in the 1960s and 1970s as sex objects, the Bond women today are seen as self-con?dent, sexually assured role models. Teeming with anecdote, first-person testimony, intelligent commentary, and a wealth of visual material, from film stills to memorabilia, Bond Girls Are Forever explores the mystery and mystique behind the Bond women-as heroes and villains, as actors and characters, as love objects and mother figures, as steely bureau-crats and trained killers.

From Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress) rising from the sea in her sexy bikini in Dr. No to secret agent Jinx (Halle Berry) in Die Another Day, the Bond women have had a lasting impact on 007, on the lives of the actresses who played them, and on pop culture. Looking at these icons from both the male and female perspective, this elegant book shows us that no matter how they have changed over time, Bond girls are forever-in the fantasy lives of us all.

this book is fantastic. in a very beautiful and big format, it's complete with all the bondgirls in a great description. very good if you are a bond fan or at least a woman lover!

5 out of 5 stars good bad girls.......2007-01-18

great pictures and an in depth look at each girl and her relationship to the movie

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but more photos needed.......2006-11-05

Overall the book is ok, however for a coffee table sized book (It's rather tall, which makes it awkward to store in a bookcase - well mine anyway) there's not enough photos, and a bit too much text. Almost all of the photos I'd seen before, so while most people new to the Bond world might be impressed, there's not enough unique content to make the book a must have. Actually come to think of it most of the text does seem like filler, too generic to be interesting. A book this size shouldn't be a novel, it should be mostly photos. With only one or two photos per actress there definitely needs to be a lot more photos.

4 out of 5 stars good but could have been better.......2006-03-21

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but when I had read other reviews I hoped for the best. This is not the best. So, what one is the best? It is the one yet to be published. yet I will admitt that this one is the best out there that I have seen. A book on Bond women should have a lot more pictures, and more inside stories would help as well; yes, more photos, that would do the trick.

2 out of 5 stars Ultimate? Naww.......2007-08-10

I'm a huge Bond fan. After reading this book, I found nothing that I was looking for. All that is in the book is charts and rankings. There is not even a fact page...like...Best selling book film or what not.
I think they should take off the "Ultimate" in "Ultimate James Bond Fan Book" and just put "Just another James Bond Fan Book."

4 out of 5 stars A different take on familiar material.......2007-02-26

Unlike other books about the Bond films, this one does not just review what the movies are about, but compares, contrasts, and critiques them over the last 40+ years. Perhaps a better title would have been "The Ultimate James Bond MOVIE Fan Book." There is minimal discussion of the literary 007 here. I enjoyed the ranking system, although some of the time I don't agree with the author's opinions, which Lipp admits may occur straightaway. Nonetheless, it's entertaining reading taking the movies from a different perspective. My only significant complaint is the complete lack of photographs, but these can be found elsewhere. For example, if you can't remember Stromberg (Curt Jergens) from The Spy Who Loved Me, you aren't going to see a picture of him in this tome. With the recent release of the Ultimate Editions on DVD, this is a timely and handy companion.

3 out of 5 stars For what it is supposed to be it is very good........2006-12-10

The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book is interesting, though not "ultimate" for people who have been reading books about Bond for years. I have a collection of books on both the James Bond films and the novels and this has perhaps prejudiced my view. If you love a repeat of plots, an analysis and critique of all the Bond characters in film and enjoy statistics this may be the book for you. There is certainly an ample supply of lists and enough ratings to fill a graduate textbook on statistics. Having experienced the latter I feel I can say that.

Where the book suffers, and author Deborah Lipp is very upfront on this, is the personal opinions. She is very honest about this and actually has two ratings for every aspect of each film. Ms. Lipp relies heavily upon fan websites and suveys that either she or others have made. Then she expresses her own feelings, sometimes in agreement and sometimes the opposite. She is very candid that Bond fans, like Trekkies and Sherlockians (I am in all three categories) will disagree on a number of points. My biggest problem is that once she gets into a film she goes off into lists and ratings of which there are many. I would have preferred the listings to have been at the latter part of the book. At times there is no apparent reason why a list will pop up at the end of a particular film being described.

I will also confess that I did not take the author's suggestion to refer to certain sections as I felt moved rather than reading it straight from cover to cover. By the end I felt very bogged down and wished that I had only read it in parts, with an interlude between. There are many excellent books of analysis out there on the Bond films, encyclopedias in some cases, many with great pictures from the films. I would suggest the reader of this review check out the listing on Amazon. If you enjoy this book you will likely find others that you will like even better. I have had to do this for years as I have used the Bond films in the classroom and written articles about some of them.

I don't regret that I bought this. I have had the good fortune as a teacher to have met a number of the main stars Ms. Lipp has named, three of which have become close personal friends of my wife and myself and who I will be asking to autograph this book as they have others in my collection.

I do appreciate the very strong feelings the author has about various Bond films, we all do. I did not rate this book on whether I agreed with the author on every film, but on its usefulness to a long time fan.

5 out of 5 stars The title is not just hype: this really IS the ultimate.......2006-11-10

The title is not just hype. This really is the ultimate book on James Bond movies; I can't imagine anything more authoritative or more entertaining. Whether you use it as a reference book, browse through it, or read it from cover to cover (as I did), it will reward you with a wealth of facts and informed opinion. This book is a great addition to anyone's movie bookshelf, and it's an absolute gotta-have for fans of James Bond - casual fans and super fans alike.

Deborah Lipp's strategy in organizing her material works extremely well. Each Bond movie gets its own chapter, which is divided into sections devoted to synopsis, analysis, and evaluation of the movie's strength and weaknesses, as well as a ranking of where the movie stands in the Bond canon. Interspersed with these discussions, you get irresistible nuggets of information: quotes, polls, rankings, milestones, facts & figures, high points & low points, cars & gadgets, goofs, awards, and more. I especially enjoyed the many Bond lists that Lipp compiled for the book, such as "Best Explosions in Bond Films," "Best Stunts," "Best Car Chases," and "Best Villains." Another highlight is an extensive survey of the actors who have portrayed Bond on screen, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of their performances.

Lipp's love of movies shines through every page. Her writing style is witty and literate, and her knowledge of 007 lore will blow you away. "The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book" is sure to become the standard work on 007 movies. Every Bond fan and every movie lover should put this book in their shopping carts.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Above Other Bond Movie Books.......2006-10-06

While there will be several James Bond books available around the time of the new Bond movie (Casino Royale) release, I recommend you get this one.

This book is very easy to read (even for people who only like photo books), and is extremely well-researched. The author very cleverly mixes in "Top Ten" and "Best/Worst" lists within each chapter describing a particular Bond movie in detail.

The author makes clear her prejudices and preferences for various films, characters, moments, etc., but balances this to a large degree with citings, quotations, and comments from fan pollings. A sore spot with other Bond books (avoided here) was the feeling their authors were trying to get in good with EON Productions (Owners/Producers of the Bond movie franchise) or other Bond movie P.R. people.

Of course, I don't agree with every opinion in this book (come on, "on Her Majesty's Secret Service" ranked in the LOWER third of Bond movies?); when presented in an entertaining manner (like in this book), these opinions are great for movie buff/Bond fan dispute, discussion, and debate --- what a good read is supposed to accomplish.

Five stars.

Before the name became a legend
Before the boy became the man
Meet young Bond

What does it take to become the greatest secret agent the world has ever known? In this thrilling prequel to the James Bond series, readers meet a thirteen-year-old schoolboy whose inquisitive mind and determination set him on a path that will one day take him all over the world, in pursuit of the most dangerous criminals known to man. When we're first introduced to young James, he's just started boarding school at Eton in the 1930s. His first adventure is set in the Highlands of Scotland, where James spends a holiday at a remote castle. Mysterious things start to happen -- someone has disappeared; then James discovers that the dark waters around the castle contain a sinister secret and he becomes aware that a very dangerous mind is at work. SilverFin is the story of Young Bond's first mission to thwart a deadly foe.

Acclaimed British writer Charlie Higson has written a brilliantly crafted tale that ingeniously uncovers the unknown story of a boy who became one of the most iconic figures of our time. Commissioned by the Ian Fleming estate, SilverFin is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will mesmerize readers of all ages from the very first page.

5 out of 5 stars Silverfin: A James Bond Adventure.......2007-06-12

"The last thing he saw before he sank back into the black depths of the water was the man's face; only it wasn't a man's face . . . it was an eel's face, a nightmarish face -- chinless, with smooth, gray, utterly hairless skin pulled tight across it, and fat, blubbery lips that stretched almost all the way back to where the ears should be. The front of the face was deformed, pushed forward, so that the nose was hideously flattened, with splayed nostrils and bulging eyes forced so wide apart that they didn't look in any way human. The ghastly thick lips parted and a wet belching hiss erupted. Then the waters closed over the boy and he knew nothing more."

Alfie Kelly, a local boy from a Scottish town, goes missing under mysterious circumstances and people wonder what happened to him. He was going fishing alone and he was never seen again. I mainly read this book because I am a fan of James bond and I thought reading a prequel to his 007 years would be interesting. The plot turned out to be very interesting and original.

Young James Bond is on vacation from Eton, his boarding school, and James hears about Alfie Kelly's disappearance. James of course finds the whole situation entirely suspicious and in true Bond style decides o investigate. James Bond's character is captured as a restless boy who hates rules and restrictions but follows them when he has to. The character of Bond's aunt explains how James was raised to be so world-wise.

My favorite part of this book is something that would reveal the plot so I'll tell my second favorite part. It is when James' uncle Max tells him how a car works and teaches him how to drive. Because James learned to drive so early in life, that might explain why he is such a skillful driver when he is older. The theme of this book, besides seeing what Bond was like as a kid, is that you can't cheat life; money and drugs can't make your life better.

Any fan of James Bond should read this book because although its sad to say, the storyline is better than some of the Bond movies. Also if you have read any of the Alex Rider Adventures by Anthony Horowitz or if you just like action thrillers or mysteries then this book is for you. There could have been a little more action and blood-chilling suspense but overall, this book was very well written.

4 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids.......2007-03-08

Young Bond: SilverFin, by Charlie Higson is an action-packed look back to the early days of James Bond.

James starts out at a new boarding school at the age of 13. He quickly makes a couple good friends, but has his share of bullies. When he goes home for break, James and another boy decide to investigate a missing boy from the area. But the missing boy seems to have disappeared on the land of one James' meanest schoolmates.

While the story is written for youth, it's a fast-paced thriller with fun characters and evil bad guys. A few times during the book, science and technology is explained in detail, so it could be considered almost educational as well.

James hasn't become a spy yet, but this is a fun look at his early years and what helped shape him into the man he will become.

Let The Games Begin

Let The Games Begin
"You boy!"
"Yes sir."
"What's your name?"
"Bond, James Bond"

This action story begins with a boy named James. He is new at Eton, he starts making friends and keeping up with the curriculum. Unfortunately he makes a very bad enemy. Lord Helllebore practically owns the school. So when he has an idea to promote his son George, he does it in a big way. So Hellebore has a competition. James spoils George's chances of winning when James's wins the cross-country competition. On James's trip to visit his aunt he finds Hellebore and gets caught along in a mystery involving a small disappearance of a boy.

I liked this book for several reasons, for one it was a real page-turner. No stops just action that's the way I like a book to come at me. Also every chapter gave one more reason to keep going. Like one time when James was trapped in a room that was the end of the chapter and it made me want to read more. Finally I liked the surprise chase scene at the end. They did such a good job surprising me it hit me out of nowhere. A person who likes action and has some extra time on their hands, would love this book to death.

5 out of 5 stars Silverfin book review.......2007-02-12

Are you looking for an action packed book ? Then Silverfin is the one to read. It's about a young boy named James Bond who is in all of Ian Fleming's original stories. Silverfin is set in the 1930's at Eton College and also in Scotland. The two main characters are James Bond and George Hellebore. The story is about a young boy who has to help his friend with his mean father who is a villan. The author Charlie Higson, starts the story out slow and then he speeds it up. I like that because it makes me not want to put this book down,it's so exciting! This book gives readers tons of suspense the whole way. For example when James is in a big fight and then the story transitions to an action sequence with another character in the middle of a different fight. Silverfin is also full of mystery like when James finally figures out what George is really up to and they get into a big fight. I would recommend this book to all James Bond fans from grades 6-9 because the vocabulary is somewhat easy. There is a sequel to Silverfin called Blood Fever. For fans of James Bond and action stories, Silverfin is the one to choose.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting action adventure for tweens.......2007-02-11

Silverfin is just what the doctor ordered if you are looking for a book to interest tween readers - especially boys. The story is exciting and action packed, without being over the top. It was a great read for my 10 year old son and his friends - they read it in a Literature Circle Group at school and immediately begin clamoring for the sequel. We are looking forward to many more adventures from Young James Bond.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Little more than basic security information.......2004-10-13

I purchased the book in order to get some depth on the inner workings of code access security and version management as it pertains to strongly named assemblies. In neither case did the book offer anything more than a rehash of the documentation -- and not in a particularly well thought out or organized manor.

5 out of 5 stars What an eye-opener.......2003-11-16

When I first saw this book, I thought "How can they write a whole book on security?" So out of intellectual curiosity, I started flipping through the pages. It was like getting kicked in the stomach, not because it was wrong, but because it was right. It made me fundamentally re-think how I write my code and really shifted my whole mental image. Too many times developers think that if an app does what users want and runs fast and is reliable, that's all there is to it. Not anymore. The most killer app written wouldn't impress anyone if it got hacked and cost them a lot of money. There days, too many people are trying to hack your stuff, and having your app busted is no less 'bad' than having a logic flaw miscalculate tons of money. Moreoever, security breaches often make the headlines so it's a lose/lose for everyone if your security is breached.

The good news... buy this book, follow their guidelines religously, keep up to date with security issues, and sleep easy at night.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the trip to the bookstore.......2003-07-28

I was a little bit skeptical to buy this book since Amazon hasnýt put up a description yet, so I went to my local bookstore to check it out. I got to readin it and couldnýt put it down. I was never really sure if my VB code was secure or not.. Iýve read other books that are heavy on security options, but light on recommendations. This book gave me both the options and recommendations. It told me exactly what I needed to do to use encryption in my program. Something I was never able to figure out from the documentation. Plus it gave me plenty of other ideas on how to make my VB code better and more secure. Now I feel like Iým in control of my VB code again. It was well worth the trip!

5 out of 5 stars Finally..........2003-07-25

My only criticism of this book is that it wasn't released sooner. Security for VB.NET covers what should already have been part of the VS.NET help or MSDN online library. I *love* the chapters on role-based and code-access security, which actually explains how you would use this stuff in real life. But my favorite chapter is the one on locking down Windows, IIS and .NET - this is exactly what I was looking for, a simple, unambiguous checklist for how to secure the platform.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of five stars.......2003-07-25

Security is becoming an essential topic and there is a lot of information available already, but up until now, no reference that brings it together for the VB programmer. I was after a book that gave me the basic knowledge for writing secure apps. This book is great.

Ed Robinson and Mike Bond have previously written about VB migration. I often find that authors like the rest of us mortals grow in our jobs and this book is very well written. It starts out with the basics, and gets more advanced as the book goes on. I like the fact that the book has loads of example code which is designed to be cut-and-pasted into your applications.

As a final note, I think this is definitely one of the best MSPress .NET books. Unlike the other security books, which seem to be rushed to be first to market, this books is well thought out, and created by people who know VB.NET as well as knowing about security. This brings security down to earth, and is more relevant to the VB programmer than anything else I've read on security. This book is worthy of five stars.

James learns that the Millennaria -- a ruthless Roman society long thought to be extinguished -- is still active. He suspects the impetuous millionaire Count Ugo Carnifex may be behind it. But one of his teachers has been acting strangely as well . . .

As a young girl's life hangs in the balance, it's up to James to uncover an intricate conspiracy that will take him head-to-head with enemies more ruthless than he could have ever imagined.

5 out of 5 stars Young Bond Will Return.......2007-05-29

"Blood Fever" is an all-around good book. As opposed to "Silverfin."

Don't get me wrong. "Silverfin", Charlie Higson's first entry in the Young James Bond series, was a solid first entry, and showed great potential for the rest of the series. But "Blood Fever" fully capitalizes on that potential. It's more genuinely suspenseful, more clever and humorous, more well-written in general, and better in every other conceivable way. Plus it has a higher body count. However, just like "Silverfin", "Blood Fever" requires the reader's indulgence. In order to enjoy either book, you have to be interested in the exploits of James Bond at age thirteen.

"Silverfin" was entertaining, but it was filled with several cheesy moments. "Blood Fever" is much more cleverly written, especially in regard to the "prequel" moments in regard to James' future. These play tribute to Ian Fleming's original novels, and, consequentially, to the movies they inspired. While they're more plentiful in "Blood Fever" than "Silverfin", they're also much more subtle and intelligently placed. To give some examples here would ruin the fun, but I will say that Fleming's recurring motifs of the number 7 and the "octopussy" are prevalent throughout the book.

The plot of "Bloodfever" is much more complex than "Silverfin", with too many twists and turns to explain here. But basically, the book starts with the abduction of a young blonde named Amy Goodenough and the murder of her father by the pirate Zoltan. Meanwhile, the teenage James Bond is studying at Eton when he discovers the workings of a secret society on campus. The paths of James, Amy, and Zoltan, as well as a megalomaniac named Ugo Carnifex with designs on world domination, cross on a field trip to Sardinia. James encounters several grotesque baddies that could give Oddjob and Jaws a run for their money, as well as frighteningly realistic scene in which James in nearly eaten alive by a swarm of mosquitoes, so well written it will probably make you itch. This all climaxes in what's probably the coolest villain death in all of Bond history.

In my review for "Silverfin", I mentioned that James could sometimes be substituted with any other young adventure hero. Not so in "Blood Fever." This young James has all of the traits of the James Bond we know and love. He gets all of the latest technology, but in a much more realistic way. For example, it's the 1930's, and James manages to get his hands on one of the first ever scuba suits. Also, James causes not one but two women to go completely gaa-gaa over him: Amy Goodenough and a young Italian girl named Vendetta.

One of the few flaws that occurred in both Young Bond novels is that Charlie Higson introduces too many characters to give them all the amount of "screen time" they deserve. The main "Bond villain", Ugo Carnifex, and "Bond girls" in particular get too little attention, especially the character of Amy Goodenough. Since Bond's enemies and loves have always played major roles in his adventures, you expect them to be better treated her. However, the characters Charlie Higson does focus on are very well-written. The character of Zoltan the pirate is especially interesting. He walks the fine line between being an enemy and an ally to James, and he's lovable and despicable, sometimes at the same time. Also, there were a couple of twists I could see coming a mile away, but I suspect other readers, young readers especially, will be thoroughly baffled.

"Blood Fever" fully capitalizes on the potential of its subject. Now, I wait with baited breath for the U. S. release of "Double or Die", the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-05-20

Pretty good story, and we find out what makes Bond ticks. A must for Alex Rider fans!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book (but not illustrated as listing suggests).......2007-03-27

I gave this second Young Bond book a glowing review as a hardcover ("A More Mature Young Bond") and a year later my opinion remains firm. This is a terrific book, and it's the Young Bond novel I would recommend to adult James Bond fans who want to sample this series. Trust me, you will be hooked.

The reason I'm here again is to let everyone to know that, despite TK being listed as an illustrator, this paperback edition is not illustrated. It's pretty much identical to the hardcover edition, including the cover art by Kev Walker. Why online retailers are listing an illustrator is a mystery to me. (I've submitted a correction to Amazon.)

Enjoy.

James Bond fans, take note: this is a revised edition of a best-seller on the superspy created in colalboration with EON Productions, producer of his films, and has been updated to add his most recent movies. Newcomers as well as avid fans receive an oversized presentation which covers all his exciting missions, pairing plot with color photos throughout and offering new narrative scenes from his newest adventures. An updated James Bond filmography adds to the information. If you're a general-interest public library and have room for only one James bond moviebook, it should be James Bond: The Secret World of 007: it wins hands down over the competition.

1 out of 5 stars Just a book on James Bond, not behind the scenes.......2006-12-23

DK Publishing is a great source for studying up on new topics and collectors items, so it treats James Bond just like that. Its almost like, "Here is James Bond dressed in a tux. Notice how he carries a Walther PPK. He drinks vodka martinis." This is great if you want to know about the character of Bond, but I find that only scratching the surface. If you want to know anything about the making of the films from writing the script and casting to how they did the stunts and special effects, this book is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Gift via James Bond 007.......2006-11-25

The Minute I saw this book I thought that this would make a great Christmas gift for some James Bond fan out there. You really have to see the insides of this book to see what I am talking about. Every page is filled with color photographs, drawings and diagrams from all 21 James Bond film. It is a beautiful looking book from cover to cover. I thought they covered enough on CASINO ROYALE without giving too much away. In fact they do a very good job with CASINO ROYALE. Some kid or a really big kid is going to love this book.

5 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS EXPANDED EDITION.......2006-11-06

DK books has made the great even better with their revised edition of "James Bond: The Secret World of 007". Previously released in 2000, this latest edition expands to include the two most recent Bond Thrillers "Die Another Day" and the upcoming "Casino Royale". As with all of DK's books, it is highlighted by fantastic photography from beginning to end and presented in an over-sized hardcover format with dust jacket, perfectly suited for the coffee table.

The book start out with the perfunctory introduction to the character and his rich history including that distinctive "Bond look" , a section on "Q" the master gadget maker, as well as a look at the various bond women such as May Day, Elektra King, and Domino.

Next the book gets into each of the Bond missions, i.e, the films, beginning with Dr. No. You'll go inside the plot of each film and the lair of each villain to meet the evil masterminds as well as their various henchman and attractive women. You'll relive the most harrowing moments of each film and see the tools that Bond applied to save the day. These sections feature numerous photos from each film as well as artistic renderings of things such as Dr. No's Crab Key lair which takes the reader through a step-by-step replay of Bond's ingenious escape.

The Goldfinger section gets you up close and personal inside Bond's ride, the Aston Martin DB5 with it's pop-out machine guns, smoke emitting exhaust pipes, and ejector seat. Diamonds are Forever introduces us to the deadly assassins Wint & Kidd as well as a pair of gorgeous ladies Plenty O'Toole and Tiffany Case as the arch-villain Blofeld returns. The Spy Who Loved Me introduces us to one of the most popular Bond villains the giant, steel-toothed Jaws who gets a sizeable section in the book.

While Bond enthusiasts will know all the details already, casual fans will really eat up this book and it's a simply gorgeous collectible. There are a couple of problems, though. One, is that you barely see Sean Connery, Roger Moore, or even Timothy Dalton anywhere in the book. The only Bond you really see is Pierce Brosnan up until the back section that lists each films credits. The other slight is that there isn't much coverage on Casino Royale but DK has that solved with their new book "Bond on Set" devoted to the latest Bond Film. Two minor things and not enough for me not to highly recommend this book.

Reviewed by Tim Janson

1 out of 5 stars Unessential Edition for the Twenty first Century.......2006-10-25

This edition of "James Bond: The Secret World of 007" is rather superfluous. The produces of CASINO ROYALE have indicated that this film is going to be a new beginning for James Bond. If so, the 20 James Bond films in the series that preceded CASINO ROYALE really have no continuity in relation to this film. Therefore an edition dedicated solely to this film would have been more appropriate. Just end it with the sections in addendum to DIE ANOTHER DAY. The James Bond based in the Twentieth Century had a good run.

3 out of 5 stars Silverfin Book Review.......2007-01-19

Silverfin by Charlie Higson is the first book in the young Bond series. James Bond attends Eton a college in England. At Eton James encounters a boy named George Hellebore. Georges father is a very important man and they even have a tournament named after him at the school. When James returns to Scotland he meets a boy named Red Kelly, which they later become good friends. When James goes to his uncle's house he meets up with Red at the Hellebore's castle in an adventure that they will never forget.
I think that Silverfin was a good book and it gets you to now James in his younger age. I think some of the decisions that James made in the story are a good example of what a good person is. I thought that this book did not have as much action in it as some of the other books and movies had in them. I think this book was good and what I want to see us how James will grow and become an adult. I think this book is good for anyone who enjoys action and the James Bond series.

5 out of 5 stars Silverfin - A New Bond Experience.......2007-01-15

Mr. Higson has managed to keep the content of this work safe for the young audience while offering the adult Bond fan a delightfully fresh Bond experience. It will thrill any reader of any age.

4 out of 5 stars SilverFin.......2006-11-10

SilverFin is a James Bond adventure. James Bond isn't a secret agent yet, because he is a teenager. But that doesn't mean that he can't have great adventures. The book starts out with James going to school in Scotland. One day after school he was walking a long after school and he stumbles on an old castle ruled by Lord Hellebore. Lord Hellebore is also the head master of Eton. Eton is the school James is going to. I don't want to give the book away but Lord Hellebore is creating a killing monster and James has to stop it.
I would recommend this book to any one that likes lots of action and adventure. If I had to rate these book from 1 to 10 it would be a 9. The only bad part about this book is when the characters are talking about stuff. The rest of the book is great.

4 out of 5 stars Not yet Bond.......2006-07-16

First of all I have to admit to never actually getting to read the original James Bond novels from Ian Fleming (I'll get around to them!). I am though a very big fan of the films, so when I was given this book as a gift I was intrigued at a chance to see Bond in a lighter way.

In the end this is what we get with this book. Bond-lite. Not lite enough for the youngins but not completely the Bond that we are all used to seeing in the films and I imagine in the books.

Before I started reading I tried to change my preconception of all that I knew of Bond to give this a fair chance. It was a good idea because I never thought of Bond as a 'loner' in high school as he is portrayed here. One of his most amazing characteristics is that he is charming like no other and that charm is not really seen here.

Hellebore was a good villain though. He toyed around with the Nazis, he was a narsissist, he treated his son and brother like they weren't good enough. All the traits of a good villain were there.

There was a Bond girl in here but she was actually not important at all. She could have been written off and it wouldn't matter. I enjoyed the interactions between James and his uncle Max. They were really heartfelt and won't ruin them here.

In the end this was what actually got Bond into being a spy. It was like a transformation and at the end of the book you could actually start to see the Bond that we all love. Overall I think this was a very good effort. It was a light read and can be recomnmended to fans of Bond who want to see how he became and spy and some of his backstory.
