Download Description
Winner of the 2002 Christianity Today Book Award! You're One Step Away from the Adventure of Your Life Deep within you lies the same faith and longing that sent Peter walking across the wind-swept Sea of Galilee toward Jesus. In what ways is the Lord telling you, as he did Peter, "Come"? John Ortberg invites you to consider the incredible potential that awaits you outside your comfort zone. Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to meet you in ways that will change you forever, deepening your character and your trust in God. The experience is terrifying. It's thrilling beyond belief. It's everything you'd expect of someone worthy to be called Lord. The choice is yours to know him as only a water-walker can, aligning yourself with God's purpose for your life in the process. There's just one requirement: If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat.

Deceptive: Not the complete edition.......2007-09-06
[Added 9/07/2007] This review concerns the "Inspirio/Zondervan Miniature Edition" which is a hardback. Amazon has lumped this hardback edition with the full text hardback edition so the site does not indicate that this review does not concern the full hardback edition. Caveat Emptor
We ordered this book, thinking it was the complete edition of the book. Neither the Amazon page nor the book itself make it clear that it is merely an abridged version. The only way to tell is to note that this edition has 125 pages and a full sized edition has 200+ pages. Needless to say, we will be returning it to purchase the complete edition. I am looking forward to reading the content as I have heard good things about it.
Cute little item........2007-09-02
Be careful about your purchase. The one we acquired was a miniture version. The type was ok and you could read it, but the book was about 2" x 3". It was a miniture and not at all what we thought we were acquiring. We wanted the whole book. When ordering we did not notice that it was a miniture edition.
If you Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to get Out of the Boat (miniature edition).......2007-07-18
A nice, inspiring, easy-to-read but incomplete book, which contains a small portion of the original edition. The description should indicate, in addition to the dimensions of the book, that the full text is not included.
Cool little book, but spring for the full size.......2007-07-05
These miniature editions really are MINIATURE! So much so that handling them and the type size was not comfortable. I returned these and purchased the full size edition - much better! I am reading the full size one now - and it is excellent! The content of the book gets 5 stars! John Ortberg keeps his excellent sense of humor throughout the book, while still getting to the serious issues that will make even the most well adjusted person say - "Yep, I felt exactly like that!" I highly recommend this book to ANYONE, whether you think you have issues or not!
thought it was going to be a silly self-help book but...............2007-06-15
it is an awesome book. I'm even taking notes to use in my life with God. It is not in the least a silly little self-help book. There are strong messages to the believer in Christ. It is funny but the applications are sooooooooo Jesus! You will be challenged beyond your daily walk but with wisdom! This is not about jumping out and running but having permission from Christ to "jump and walk on the water"!

Customer Reviews:
The best Christian writer of our day.......2007-02-01
It's funny -- I love James Taylor and I love John Ortberg. I think the commonality there is that they are such great wordsmiths. Very honest, plain-spoken, and yet so much is contained in so little said. Ortberg is not a poet, but he's able to see great truth in simple things.
If you avoid being confronted with truth, then avoid this book. But if you're ready to face it, then read it. He's the CS Lewis of our day.
You Too Can Walk on Water.......2007-01-03
The weekly men's breakfast and Bible study that I lead spent an enjoyable six weeks examining how following Jesus today requires the same faith that allowed Peter to step out of the relative safety of the boat and move toward Jesus on the water. If you or the people you care about need encouragement in moving out of the comfort zone, this book will help.
Faith.......2006-09-28
This is one of the best book that I have which talk about faith. If you need encouragement or something to help you increase your faith, then this is the book for you.
If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat - Participants Guide.......2005-09-20
John Ortberg really knows how to make it real and how to get people to begin applying biblical principles to their lives.
Get Your Small Group Out of the Boat.......2005-03-15
Ortberg's small group series are among the best, if used with his teaching DVD's (Zondervan, but you'll have to find that elsewhere, it appears).
This particular study appeals to a broad range of backgrounds, and experience levels. We all wrestle with "staying comfortable" vs. "stepping out in faith" when the situation calls for it. Through excellent groups discussion and Scripture investigation questions it is easy to guide a group to go beyond their current "comfort zone" and take steps of faith "outside the boat."
But purchasethe DVD for best results (use an Internet search engine and you should find it quickly). Ortberg is a master teacher, and his 25-30 minute teaching is a must.

Jacob Jankowski says: "I am ninety. Or ninety-three. One or the other." At the beginning of Water for Elephants, he is living out his days in a nursing home, hating every second of it. His life wasn't always like this, however, because Jacob ran away and joined the circus when he was twenty-one. It wasn't a romantic, carefree decision, to be sure. His parents were killed in an auto accident one week before he was to sit for his veterinary medicine exams at Cornell. He buried his parents, learned that they left him nothing because they had mortgaged everything to pay his tuition, returned to school, went to the exams, and didn't write a single word. He walked out without completing the test and wound up on a circus train. The circus he joins, in Depression-era America, is second-rate at best. With Ringling Brothers as the standard, Benzini Brothers is far down the scale and pale by comparison.
Water for Elephants is the story of Jacob's life with this circus. Sara Gruen spares no detail in chronicling the squalid, filthy, brutish circumstances in which he finds himself. The animals are mangy, underfed or fed rotten food, and abused. Jacob, once it becomes known that he has veterinary skills, is put in charge of the "menagerie" and all its ills. Uncle Al, the circus impresario, is a self-serving, venal creep who slaps people around because he can. August, the animal trainer, is a certified paranoid schizophrenic whose occasional flights into madness and brutality often have Jacob as their object. Jacob is the only person in the book who has a handle on a moral compass and as his reward he spends most of the novel beaten, broken, concussed, bleeding, swollen and hungover. He is the self-appointed Protector of the Downtrodden, and... he falls in love with Marlena, crazy August's wife. Not his best idea.
The most interesting aspect of the book is all the circus lore that Gruen has so carefully researched. She has all the right vocabulary: grifters, roustabouts, workers, cooch tent, rubes, First of May, what the band plays when there's trouble, Jamaican ginger paralysis, life on a circus train, set-up and take-down, being run out of town by the "revenooers" or the cops, and losing all your hooch. There is one glorious passage about Marlena and Rosie, the bull elephant, that truly evokes the magic a circus can create. It is easy to see Marlena's and Rosie's pink sequins under the Big Top and to imagine their perfect choreography as they perform unbelievable stunts. The crowd loves it--and so will the reader. The ending is absolutely ludicrous and really quite lovely. --Valerie Ryan
Book Description
Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It’s the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. There he meets the freaks, grifters, and misfits that populate this world. He introduces us to Marlena, beautiful star of the equestrian act; to August, her charismatic but twisted husband (and the circus’s animal trainer); and to Rosie, the seemingly untrainable elephant Jacob cares for. Beautifully written, with a luminous sense of time and place, Water for Elephants tells of love in a world in which love’s a luxury few can afford.

"There's A Sucker Born Every Minute." P.T. Barnum.......2007-10-04
A very endearing story told by an old man reflecting back on his time as a circus vet. Enjoyed the insight into circus life during the Great Depression, with all its madness, tragedy, and colorful characters. High spirited with lots of drama and emotion. Predictable ending , but nonetheless satisfying. Could easily see this one making it to the big screen using the same cast of characters from the Titanic.

Water for Elephants: A Novel
I absolutely loved the novel. Our book club read it. It is very readable and interesting. I was absorbed right away. It is also informative about the circus life at that time period.
A Must Read.......2007-10-04
I loved this book from the first page to the last. Wonderfully written and a super quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone, in fact it is our next Book Club book!
Awesome.......2007-10-04
I can't really add much to the five-star reviews here, except to add that this book made my recovery from a recent illness a way more pleasant experience, and to say that when Hollywood comes calling to turn this into a movie, please don't give it to anyone but the Coens. I can already picture John Goodman as August.
Wonderful Book.......2007-10-04
I truly enjoyed this book except for the parts detailing animal abuse, but I'm very squeamish. WFE is a wonderful book and I definately recommend it to everyone.

Simple book for beginners.......2007-08-25
Good book for beginners maybe. Generally covers all important topics but on very entry level. I didn't find here anything what couldn't be found in public resources on the web.
Just right.......2007-05-12
A small book cramed with info. Tells the beginner everything they need to know.
Too much for nothing.......2007-05-07
book was very much into the chemistry...it did not help with the regular issues we have with water in marine aquariums....no mentioning of issues related to presence of chemicals in water....may be people with knowledge in chemistry can try....
Good info, concise, a must-read for saltwater newbies and experts.......2006-07-10
This book goes through everything step by step, without getting getting too technical about the chemistry. Do you ever wonder why your shrimp needs iodine added? Do you know what the dentrification cycle is and why its important? Now you can learn it all. This book really DOES cover everything you need to know about water and what you need to do to keep it healthy for your fish and your inverts. Its under 100 pages, so you can read through it in a day or two, no problem. Really explains everything you need to know.
Even for experts, this book is REALLY helpful because it's written so plainly and covers so much. You'll be amazed at what you've forgotten when you read through this.
great book for learing about water chemisty.......2005-08-22
iv eleaned lots from this book and recommed it to anyone starting up with a saltwater aquarium. there is so much more to just adding salt water and fishies.

Book Description
The Reformation swept across Europe with a God-glorifying gospel of grace. Now the doctrine of grace cherished and proclaimed by the Reformers is under renewed assault from an unexpected placeâthe evangelical church itself.
With the help of several theologians, Gary L. W. Johnson and Guy P. Waters trace the background and development of two seemingly disparate movements that have surfaced within the contemporary churchâthe New Perspective(s) on Paul and the Federal Visionâand how they corrupt the truth of salvation by faith alone. By regaining a focus on the doctrine of grace, pastors, seminarians, and future leaders can regain the cohesion, coherence, and direction to truly build the church to withstand the attacks of false and empty doctrines.
âIf you have been unsettled or impressed by the arguments of the New Perspectives or the Federal Visionâthis book is for you. By Faith Alone is a serious and substantial rejoinder to the new viewpoints on justification, imputation, covenant theology, and more.â
J. Ligon Duncan III, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi; President, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals; Adjunct Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary
âThe twin pillars of historic Protestantismâthe authority of the Bible and justification by faith aloneâhave been under attack since the beginning of the Reformation. But the recent assault on justification by the New Perspective on Paul and by the Federal Vision is particularly pernicious, cloaked as it is in apparent scholarship and piety. This important book defends the historic Reformation doctrine with better scholarship and more profound piety.â
W. Robert Godfrey, President and Professor of Church History, Westminster Seminary California
âIn the sixteenth century, Martin Luther boldly declared that the doctrine of justification is the article by which the church stands or falls. In the twenty-first century, many churches have not stood their ground but have fallen prey to the voices of those who have offered new perspectives on an ancient, biblical doctrine. I am thankful the Lord has raised up faithful men to provide the people of God with a clear, biblical perspective on this most precious doctrine.â
Burk Parsons, Editor,
Tabletalk magazine; Minister of Congregational Life, Saint Andrew’s Chapel, Sanford, Florida
Customer Reviews:
Thought-provoking theological essays.......2007-04-11
This is a very thought-provoking series of theological essays engaging the contemporary challenges to the historic Reformed understanding of the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Any book of this sort, with multiple contributors, is bound to be somewhat uneven in quality - but this is one of the better books of this sort that I've seen.
Here is the table of contents, interspersed with my brief comments.
1. What did Saint Paul Really Say? N. T. Wright and the New Perspective(s) on Paul - Cornelis P. Venema
2. Observations on N. T. Wright's Biblical Theology with Special Consideration of the "Faithfulness of God" - T. David Gordon
These first two chapters engage the writings of N. T. Wright, who is probably the highest profile proponent of the New Perspective on Paul (and is also one of the most renowned contemporary Jesus scholars). Their critiques of Wright are very, very insightful and should be seriously considered. Everything really does seem to fall on Wright's embrace of a certain way of reading Second Temple Judaism (as non-legalistic) and his interpretation of the phrase "dikaiosune theou" as "the covenant faithfulness of God" instead of "the righteousness of God." This second question is adequately challanged in the second chapter of this book.
3. A Justification of Imputed Righteousness - Richard D. Phillips
4. The Foundational Term for Christian Salvation: Imputation - C. F. Allison
These two chapters address the recent controversies surrounding the doctrine of imputation. Having read Piper's defense of imputation in Counted Righteous in Christ, as well as Carson's essay in the volume on Justification edited by Husbands, I still found these chapters very helpful and persuasive (I've not yet read Brian Vicker's Jesus Blood AND Righteousness, a recent more in-depth treatment of imputation). These essays were very good.
5. Reflections on Auburn Theology - T. David Gordon
This was a little less interesting to me, probably b/c I'm not Presbyterian.
6. To Obey is Better than Sacrifice: A Defense of the Active Obedience of Christ - David Van Drunen
As I recall, this was also a good essay, defending the necessity and imputation of the active obedience of Christ to believers
7. Covenant, Inheritance, and Typology: Understanding the Principles at Work in God's Covenants - R. F. White & E. C. Beisner
Of all the essays in this book, this one stands out as the most helpful and the one that will repay several re-readings in the future. The authors set out to show why the theological construct of covenant theology (as traditionally understood in Reformed theology) is biblically-faithful and warranted from the texts (even though the language is sometimes extra-biblical). Most helpful was their contrasting the two principles of inheritance, by either personal merit or representative merit, and then tracing these two principles through the various historical covenants. This is the best thing on covenant theology that I've read so far (though my reading in this area has not been very wide).
8. Why the Covenant of Works is a Necessary Doctrine: Revisiting the Objections to a Venerable Reformed Doctrine - John Bolt
As with the chapter 7, this was a very, very helpful treatment of covenant theology, specifically the covenant of works. Bolt is an excellent and lucid writer and I finished the essay wanting to read more of his material.
9. The Reformation, Today's Evangelicals, and Mormons: What Next? - Gary L. W. Johnson
This essay was good, but seemed a little bit displaced in this volume.
Overall, this is a very good volume and worth reading for those engaged in the current debates over justification. However, if you are only going to read one book on the New Perspective on Paul, get Stephen Westerholm's Perspectives Old and New: The Lutheran Paul and His Critics. It is much more comprehensive and has been the most important book I've read on the issue.

better then the basics.......2007-09-17
This a good book for the person who knows more then the basics and want's to move on to the next step before going a course in futher education
Not for Amateurs!.......2007-09-15
This is an excellent reference book and readable (mostly) as well. That said, if you're a homeowner just looking for a "how-to" on maybe additional zoning or adding a new loop, this is not the book for you. You could quite literally design a system for the most complex residence using this book IF you know the basics of plumbing and HVAC work and are pretty good at basic mathmatics. It is not so much a how-to as a what-to book, so bear that in mind.
Well written resource, covers the bases very thoroughly.......2007-05-15
Great book. Not all the way through it yet, but giving me more confidence to do my own radiant heat project. Heat loss calcs not a big mystery any more. Minor lack of detail clarifications when it comes to underslab foam insulation options. EPS--Expanded foam is perfectly acceptable alternative (and cheaper) than XPS--Extruded, when ordered to engineered compressive strength requirements. Otherwise it is giving me excellent ideas for doing my job right the first time. Don't be disuaded by cost of book. Value is there in spades--included CD is very nice.
Hydronics design.......2007-05-14
As an architect, I was impressed with the clarity of the information and the step-by-step design process. It was so helpful, I even bought the software package the authors have developed for easily calculating hydronic designs.
Good Solid Engineering, THE Hydronics Reference Manual.......2007-02-02
I am a special projects manager for a major tankless water heater company. I bought this book to further my knowledge of hydronic and radiant heating so I could better assist our customers when they call me for advice.
I have some experience with plumbing in the solar field and have attended a class at Uponor, so I come to this book with an amateur's level of experience.
I have only started the book, but I can say that it is extremely complete and well written. From what I have come across in trade journal articles that deal with our business, John Siegenthaler is no doubt the "Rajah of
Radiant" and all things hot water.
I use it constantly now as a reference book to learn and to help others. I plan to use it someday soon to help design my own radiant system in my solar powered straw-bale retirement home "out yonder" somewhere.
The reason I rated it as a 4 instead of a 5 is because I could not find anything about using tankless heaters as a heat source. John covers everything from normal residential gas fired tanks to high efficiency complex boilers, but doesn't address tankless which is becoming more and more popular with radiant because of the low temperature requirements (85º ~ 100º).
This second edition is dated 2004. Unfortunately, hydronic technology is moving at warp speed and we are already in 2007!

Lonely Hearts (A Resnick Novel)

John Harvey's ninth book about British police investigator Charlie Resnick, who runs the homicide bureau in a city very much like Nottingham, doesn't immediately punch you in the stomach the way previous entries did. Instead, Still Waters offers several smaller stories ticking along at the same time. But the growing ranks of Resnick fans should find plenty to enjoy, including Charlie's delight in jazz and food (breakfasts supplant his legendary sandwich creations this time out). First-timers should certainly recognize the force and beauty of Resnick's gently sarcastic humanity as he pursues a friendly neighborhood art thief and tries to link the killing of an abused woman with a series of bodies found in local canals. Owl Books published Harvey's first two Resnick novels--Lonely Hearts and Rough Treatment--as well as 1996's stunning Easy Meat as handsome paperbacks.

Praise from an ardent fan.......2006-08-02
I love the Charlie Resnick series! I discovered them years ago after a reviewer in the Chicago Tribune talked about Harvey's insights into great jazz artists. I completey agree,in fact I have discovered several musicians that have rapidly become some of my favorite artists (Lester Young, Ben Webster). But I also enjoy Harvey's depiction of a man at odds with contemporary society. Charlie Resnick is such a likeable character that my only complaint is that the series has ended.
Any and all of the Resnick books work as stand alone well written and exciting mysteries, but I would suggest starting from the begining and reading them all. The arch of character development in many of the ancillary characters is quite rewarding.
Fine for fans, possibly confusing for others.......2000-10-23
There are inherent perils in writing a series of novels based on the same set of characters. Is the author simply rehashing the same theme over and over again? Are the characters becoming too predictable? Will readers new to the series understand what is going on, or will they feel excluded from the author's world for not begining at the first novel? Is there any reason left to warrant delving into the characters' lives yet again?
These are pitfalls common to almost all authors. The 'Burke' stories of Andrew Vachss are now constantly fighting self-parody. Douglas Adams' HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE series arguably had no reason to continue after the third installment. Joseph Heller destroyed his beloved CATCH-22 characters with the near-wretched CLOSING TIME. And Tom Clancy's 'Jack Ryan' stories have become far less about Ryan, and more about Clancy's political views.
John Harvey's 'Charlie Resnick' series of British police procedurals are also fighting these traps. While Harvey has consistently written taut, elegant meditations on the evils that society can fall victim to (see EASY MEAT), there remains the danger that he may alienate new readers who are not intimately familiar with Resnick's ways. STILL WATERS is a finely written story, but newcomers to Resnick's universe may find themselves confused.
STILL WATERS finds Resnick, the resourceful British police officer, in a situation immediately identifiable to all. He is rather anxious over his burgeoning relationship with English teacher Hannah, and also has job security issues over an ignored promotion possibility. But while his overall routine may to similar to many, Harvey manages to inject new life into the familiar with Resnick's personal indentification with the seedier aspects of humanity. But while Resnick may attempt to keep his professional and personal lives seperate, the murder of one of Hannah's friends brings his worlds together.
Harvey's novels have, as their main focus, the view that evil is just around the corner in all our lives. In STILL WATERS, it is spousal abuse that receives the brunt of Harvey's attention. Seemingly happy couples are revealed to exist in relationships of pain and suffering.
Harvey deals with this theme quite effectively, from many viewpoints. He also refuses to serve as judge to his characters, presenting them as flawed examples of humanity, not incarnations of evil. Harvey also never rules out the concept of redemption, however rare that commodity may be.
But as STILL WATERS is one novel of many, Harvey has other issues to deal with as well. There is Lynn Kellogg, a fellow officer who would rather transfer out than deal with her past relationship with Resnick. There is Mark Divine, a police officer who was raped in a previous novel, and has become increasingly violent. There is Carl Vincent, a homosexual officer in a profession not known for tolerance. Harvey manages to touch on all of their lives, but some of it seems unnecessary. A new reader may be confused by characters who seem to be integral elements of the plot, yet never appear again. At times, STILL WATERS resembles a novel between novels, an opportunity to catch up on the lives of the characters, but not an especially interesting story in and of itself.
Possibly because of this, STILL WATERS is not an altogether successful novel. Perhaps Harvey should have centred solely on the murder of Hannah's friend, and its immediate effects on Resnick's life. Harvey gives too much information on other areas to advance this plot. There is also a subplot involving art theft that never adequately fits into the whole, with a resolution that feels rushed and unfinished.
But Harvey is still a fine writer. His individual scenes of Resnick's personal life with Hannah are touching and realistic, and his scenes involving the spousal abuse are chilling. And Resnick is a terrific literary character, a flawed and deeply troubled man who can always be counted on to find the appropriate jazz analogy. STILL WATERS is worth reading, but it is more effective for the already-initiated than the reader who is discovering Harvey for the first time.
Solid Ninth Entry in Series.......1999-08-25
Very solid ninth entry effectively mixes Charlie Resnick's ever-deepening relationship with schoolteacher Hannah and the dissapearance of her friend Jane. This is against a backdrop of the formation of a new Serious Crimes Unit headed by an ambitious high-flying female which threatens to take over Charlie's turf. Less effective is the subplot tying together a few formerly seen characters and an art forgery ring.
Another excellent work by a sterling British writer.......1997-10-05
When the battered corpse of a mid-twenties woman is found floating in a canal, the police conclude that a serial killer is one the loose because of a nebulous link to other canal murders. However, a second body is soon found. This time the victim is Jane Peterson, a close friend of Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick's lover, Hannah. The police think that Jane is the latest victim of the serial killer. Neither case falls under the jurisdiction of Charlie since serial killer investigations are worked on by the Serious Crime Unit.
However, Hannah is convinced that Jane's death was caused by her physically abusive spouse, Alex. Hannah convinces Charlie to look into her girl friend's death. Meanwhile, other things swirl around Charlie. A junior officer, Lynn Kellogg has applied for a transfer and is pushing Charlie to make it happen. Other crime, such as an art theft, requires Charlie's investigative talent. With all this going on, Charlie is going to find it difficult to properly investigate what happened to Jane.
The Charlie Resnick series are some of the best British police procedurals on the market today. The current entry, STILL WATER, is a well written detective novel that showcase John Harvey's tremendous talent. Though the story line is quite good, it is not at the upper echelon of the previous novels because too much is left open (perhaps for the next book). Still, that leaves the tale better than 99.9% of the police procedural in book stores on sale today. Several of the Resnick novels are about to go paperback and are worth buying by fans of the sub-genre.

The Solar Fraud: Why Solar Energy Won't Run the World, Second Edition
ASIN: 0471698679 |
Book Description
The updated, cornerstone engineering resource of solar energy theory and applications. Solar technologies already provide energy for heat, light, hot water, electricity, and cooling for homes, businesses, and industry. Because solar energy only accounts for one-tenth of a percent of primary energy demand, relatively small increases in market penetration can lead to very rapid growth rates in the industryâwhich is exactly what has been projected for coming years as the world moves away from carbon-based energy production. Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes, Third Edition provides the latest thinking and practices for engineering solar technologies and using them in various markets.
This Third Edition of the acknowledged leading book on solar engineering features:
- Complete coverage of basic theory, systems design, and applications
- Updated material on such cutting-edge topics as photovoltaics and wind power systems
- New homework problems and exercises

The Bible -- Not Just for Thermal.......2007-03-24
This is the textbook of fundamentals of solar energy engineering.
An excellent solar energy textbook.......2000-04-05
The second edition of "Solar Engineering..." is a much expanded and updated version of the original, which was already a decent textbook. It covers almost everything there is to know about engineering of solar energy systems, and the presentation is clear and well organized. The division into "basics" and "applications" sections is a very sensible way to get oriented before plunging into the depth of a specific technology, especially since solar thermal applications tend to cover a wide variety of technologies. The gradual and systematic approach makes this book a very good textbook for beginners. The wide scope makes it also a pretty good reference source for practitioners who are looking for a specific bit of information.
The new chapter on photovoltaic cells is a nice touch. While this is not a "thermal process," it is still important for any practitioner of solar thermal to know what's happening in the other corner of the field. A presentation of PV at the level that can be understood by non-physicists is a very welcome addition.
My only complaint is that recent significant developments are not well represented (I guess much of this developed after the book was written, so this complaint is not really aimed at the authors). Topics such as non-imaging concentrators, high-temperature thermal receivers for Brayton cycle, and solar chemistry are either briefly mentioned or absent altogether. The more traditional applications such DHW are of course presented in detail, but their significance to the energy market remains negligible. I would prefer to see more on applications that have the potential to make a major impact. Hopefully this will be included in the next edition...

Book Description
Riders of all levels can now learn the key knowledge, tools and techniques needed to control kite power. Products, like the Multiple Line Lengths (MLL), give riders the ability to dramatically alter power in the kite by decreasing the length of the line. Techniques like the Upwind Board-Drag (UBD) on the K.I.T.E.S. Entry Level Line lengths make it easy for riders to travel upwind while learning their wing. Entry-level riders can now spend hours in the water discovering how and why their kite works. In the past this valuable time was wasted walking back up the beach after three to five minutes of intimidating water time.
Advanced riders chase wind, when they find it, they need the K.I.T.E.S. Multiple Line Lengths (MLL) to manage it's power. Without a doubt, the most serious issue in kiteboarding is that virtually all riders launch on advanced line lengths all the time, not understanding that line length makes a huge difference in kite power.
Finally, real answers to safe riding.

Why no DVD?.......2007-09-02
Strangely enough, the words "Book-DVD-Online Certification" led me to believe a DVD was included with the book. The associated DVD is sold separately, making the book/DVD combo cost more than $50.

"Venice is in trouble," writes John Keahey. The city is sinking into the sea. It has lost six feet over the last millennium and soon will lose more. The problem has become so bad that hotel concierges routinely distribute rubber boots to guests, and tourists cross historic squares on elevated boardwalks. Long-time residents flee not only the rising water, but also the rising cost-of- living and the rising industrial pollution. Venice, according to Keahey, "is evolving into a crumbling museum." Once, of course, it was an economic powerhouse with global reach; later it became the repository of some of the finest art and architecture in the world. Now it's sinking, largely due to the remorseless facts of geography, but also because the city's residents have abused their underground water resources. In Venice Against the Sea, Keahey offers a detailed description of what's gone wrong--and explores how the city might be saved, at least temporarily, through innovative engineering. This is a book anybody who has fallen in love with Venice will want to read, yet it issues a stark warning for people in coastal cities all over the world. If sea levels continue to rise, Venice's bleak fate may also be their own. --John Miller
Book Description
Venice is sinking - six feet over the past 1,000 years. The reasons for this are many.Although there is a natural geologic tendency for some sinking, humans have exacerbated the problem by exploiting on a massive scale underground water resources for industrial purposes.Coupled with these events - and perhaps most significant - are climatic changes all over the globe. The heating of the atmosphere after the last ice age, dramatically speeded up by humans, has led to a steady, continuing rise in sea level. This global warming is likely to persist beyond human control for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.Venetians, other Italians, and many in the world community are locked in debate over Venice's plight. Venice Against the Sea explains how the city and its 177 canals were built and what has led up to this long-foreseen crisis. It explores the various options currently being considered for "solving" this problem and chronicles the ongoing debate among scientists, engineers, and politicians about the pros and cons of each potential solution.Through extensive research and interviews, award-winning journalist John Keahey has written the definitive book on this fascinating problem. No matter what the experts decide to do, one thing is for certain - Venice's art, its buildings, and its history are too important to the planet's cultural identity to let it slip beneath the rising waters of the Adriatic.AUTHORBIO: John Keahey, a veteran newspaper journalist, is an Idaho native raised in Nampa, Idaho. He has degrees from the University of Utah, and lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, book designer Connie Disney. He is also the author of A Sweet and Glorious Land.
Customer Reviews:
Very good, gets a little technical towards the end.......2002-07-24
The first three-quarters+ of the book is excellent. It provides a good overview of Venetian history and explains how/why the city is essentially sinking. The author then gets into a TREMENDOUS amount of depth (no pun intended) concerning funding for a proposed gate project, various changes of Italian government, etc.-- probably more than you need to know, certainly more than I needed. Overall, though, the book was very good, even for someone who knows Venice as well as I do.
