Book Description
Award-winning author
Laura Lee Guhrke steps back to a time of Southern propriety -- and passion -- in this thrilling page-turner laced with heated sensuality. A lawyer is reunited with an unforgettable lady from his past -- and together, they step into a web of small-town scandal and desire.
Lily Morgan may be Shivaree, Georgia's most talked-about lady. Everyone in town knows about the bitter break-up of her marriage five years before, when Daniel Walker, her husband's tough, uncompromising lawyer, tore her reputation to shreds and left her with nothing but a wish to get even. But now something about Daniel makes her blood boil and her pulse quicken...not with righteous fury, but with passion.
Daniel has returned to Shivaree to once again match wits with Lily Morgan. The thought of a rematch with Lily delights him, for he has never forgotten her hot temper -- or her lovely looks. But when a shocking murder shakes the town, Daniel joins Lily to find a killer, and their unexpected partnership sparks something between them that they never expected -- desire. Now Daniel, the strong-willed lawyer for whom winning is everything, realizes he must win the one reward he can't live without: Lily's forgiveness -- and her love.

Good, but not great.......2007-05-13
Since the back cover description is already given on this page, I'll skip straight to my review:
After reading Laura Lee Guhrke's awesome book, Prelude to Heaven (Harper Monogram), I went to a used-book store and bought everything of hers that I could get my hands on. I found SHE'S NO PRINCESS just average, but figured that every author writes a not-so-good book once in a while. So I was still more than eager to read BREATHLESS, but was left feeling a little disappointed.
My biggest complaint with this book was that I felt the romance took a backseat to the rest of the plot. While the other storyline of Lily trying to close down the town's famous cathouse and Daniel fighting to keep it open (because he'd been hired to) was interesting, I felt that the development of their relationship was pushed aside in favor of this plot. And once murder came into play, I felt like the romance was almost nonexistent. It seemed that the author would work on the mystery, then remember that this was supposed to be romance, throw in a kiss, then get back to the mystery. I want romance in my romance novel. Is that too much to ask?
I didn't like that Daniel never really truly apologized to Lily for how he'd helped to totally ruin her reputation, especially when she'd been completely innocent. Yes, he did admit that he was wrong, but I felt that he could have grovelled a bit more.
I also felt that the relationship between Lily and Daniel was more about sex than love. Not that this was a lust-soaked book (it wasn't), but there didn't seem to be much else, especially since I didn't find him a very likeable hero. Him fighting to keep a cathouse open just rubbed me the wrong way, no matter how justified that author tried to make his reasons seem. Prostitution is evil, no matter how you look at it, so I found it hard to really cheer for the hero.
I can read a book a day, but this one took me over a week to finish. That ought to tell you something. I didn't have to force myself through it, but it certainly wasn't hard to put down. And once put down, there was no huge, burning desire to pick it up again. Maybe I expected too much of this book, since the first book I read by this author was just so awesome. I don't know. All I can say is that if I'd read BREATHLESS first, I probably wouldn't have bothered seeking out other novels by this author. Try PRELUDE TO HEAVEN to see what this author is really capable of. I don't think that BREATHLESS represents the best of her true abilities.
Tart and sweet as lemonade.......2005-07-14
I typically shy away from historicals set in someone's romanticized idea of the South. There are too many clumsy attempts to write Southern dialect, and too many Scarlett O'Hara caricaitures whose shrewishness is labeled as "fiery temperament." But I'm glad I trusted this author enough to read her take on Southern-style romance.
Guhrke's sweet-tart tale takes place in Shivaree, Georgia at the beginning of the 20th century, when a lady might overcome the social stigma of having a job, but not the disgrace of being divorced by her husband. Shivaree's church-going folk and Ladies Temperance Society live uncomfortably with the fact that the town owes its healthy economy to a den of sin called the Shivaree Social Club. Well-to-do men from Atlanta pay an entire dollar for an hour in the company of loose women. They also drink and gamble, which is fortunate for ladies who want to gossip about the club; in 1905, no proper woman discusses sex, much less sex-for-money.
The thoroughly delightful heroine of Breathless is a one-time debutante, shunned by her family and society since her husband divorced her. Lily rebels against the town's hypocrisy by playing scandalous modern piano music with the windows open, and displaying a copy of Michelangelo's David - buck naked! - in her front parlor.
Once a year, on the anniversary of her humiliating divorce hearing, she files a legal complaint against the Shivaree Social Club. Her former husband spent many nights of their marriage cavorting with the club's "painted ladies," and closing the club is the only revenge left to Lily.
For five years, her efforts have been in vain. But when the town judge acquires a young bride and curtails his own use of the club, he shocks everyone by agreeing to close it down. More surprised than anyone is the club's owner, a U.S. senator. The lawyer he sends to Shivaree to fight the injunction is the senator's political protegee, a luscious hunk named Daniel Morgan.
Daniel has a friendly relationship with the judge and doesn't expect to spend more than a day on the Shivaree Social Club case. But he doesn't expect the tenacity of his opponent: Lily Morgan, whose reputation he destroyed when he represented her husband in the divorce. Lily no sooner hears that her husband's ruthless lawyer is in town than she marches into the local diner, slaps his face, and leaves without a word - treating Daniel to a view of her shapely hips in one of the new, tight, modern dresses.
War is declared between the two, and both sides have too much at stake to show any mercy. Daniel needs to get the club reopened or risk losing his client's political backing when he runs for the Senate. Lily hopes that by closing the club, she can lose her image as an immoral hussy. When the town's leading ladies not only refuse to join Lily's cause, but deliver a cruel public humiliation, Daniel is forced to witness the ugly consequences to Lily of the trial that made her an outcast. He begins to question his assumptions about her character, and to experience some doubts about the cost to himself of his own ambition.
Of course, the infamous divorcee and her hated nemisis discover an unexpected sexual attraction as fierce as Lily's battle to close the club. Their verbal skirmishes are rich with a range of emotions, but never sink to the level of screaming matches. The two share a sense of humor and a grudging respect for each other that makes a friendship between them seem as natural and inevitable as an affair. The result is a love story of surprising tenderness.
"Breathless" is peopled with a whole community of entertaining characters: snooty church ladies, semi-likeable dishonest judges, a barbershop full of irate husbands, and the first generation of modern women - not yet dreaming of having the right to vote, but beginning to feel the first, faint pangs of hunger to have a say in the direction of their lives.
Lysistrata goes down the Georgia.......2001-10-24
The plotline of women withholding their favors as leverage goes back to ancient Greece (at least). It gets a humorous and warm treatment in "Breathless" where the women of a small Georgia town go on strike to shut down the town's main tourist attraction - a whorehouse. The book focuses on the romance between Lily, leader of the women, and Daniel, lawyer for the owners of the brothel. Their history is bad but when murder occurs they find themselves on the same side.
While there is a healthy dose of "Americana" in this book, I enjoyed the political edge - suffrage and women's rights. Still, the best part of the book are the strong characterizations including several strong secondary characters. The plotting is probably the weak point as the book lacked a strong page turning quality. Still, a fun relaxing read even if it probably isn't a keeper.
"Breathless"? Try "Witless"!.......2001-07-09
...
Daniel infuriates me with his arrogance and his high-handedness. He wrongs Lily terribly, and when he comes back to town, he feels only a twinge of pity that all the people in town ostracize her because of HIS brilliant lawyer work. Then he proceeds to boss her around mercilessly, and at one point, he handcuffs her to a post because she stages a protest. What a man! Where's the line for more romance heroes like him? Sign me up for one!!! (sarcasm intended here).
Then, in the end, (what a wonderful man!) he gives up a promising political future for her. Gee. If he had walked into the library and I was Lily, I would've told him where he could shove his new library card.
Wonderful, BREATHLESS pace!.......1999-10-08
Have not read a romance novel this good in a long time. The lead characters are so genuinely appealing and realistic. There is everything in this book, history, atmosphere, humor, drama, passion and love. I can't wait for her next book. It was the first book in a long time that I could not put down. Loved every word!

Beyond Breathless.......2007-06-26
Jamie McNamara lives and breathes business. When she finds herself seducing staid business mogul Andrew Brooks in the back of a Hummer limo she's shocked at her behavior. And if that isn't bad enough, it isn't long before the whole episode is chronicled in an online column, Red Choo Diaries, using fictional names. Andrew has wanted more of Jamie since the steamy Hummer incident but now one night's drunk rambling to his brother and his sister's column may have ruined any chance he has with her. Can Andrew convince Jamie to take a chance on him?
Beyond Breathless is perfect for the beach or any lazy day! Jamie and Andrew couldn't be more made for each other and each page turned only makes this book a definite must read!
Kathleen O'Rielly's Red Choo Diaries should be on every romance reader's summer reading list!

Loved It!.......2007-02-15
Jamie McNamara, a client services manager, has always been very career oriented. Her social life has been nearly nonexistent since her boyfriend dumped her for his secretary, so now all she has is her career. After a lot of work, she finally has a meeting in Connecticut with Mr. Newhouse. This is a meeting which could be very beneficial to her already successful career. However, Grand Central Station is shut down, making her late for her meeting. So she is desperate to get a ride to Connecticut.
Andrew Brooks, a very wealthy partner in the Shearson, Brooks, Panhower and Bloom firm, also has an appointment in Connecticut. Since Grand Central Station is closed, he needs to find an alternate means of transportation. While attempting to do that, he strikes up a conversation with Jamie. Exchanging first names only, they agree to share a ride in a white Limo Hummer, which is the only transportation they can find on such short notice. Up to now, his whole world has been his work and his family. In fact, he has practically raised his two siblings, Jeff and Mercedes.
Jamie has no idea who Andrew is, but the chemistry between them is strong. Deciding to give in to her impulses for once, she seduces him in the Hummer. This is not her normal behavior at all.
Andrew is charmed by her, especially after the Hummer experience, and wants to see her again. However, the story of their intimate encounter finds its way to Andrew's younger sister, Mercedes, who is trying to establish a writing career. Not believing the story about her brother, she shares the tale in her online sex blog, The Red Choo Diaries, which causes quite a stir. It even gets a mention in the New York Times! Unfortunately, this is information neither Andrew nor Jamie want anyone to discover.
This is a fun, steamy story. The ongoing chemistry between the characters is explosive and the fast paced action and witty dialogue will keep you reading. I have not read anything by Kathleen O'Reilly before, but this one has made me a fan. I cannot wait for the next installment of The Red Choo Diaries. Anyone who likes their stories really steamy; this one is for you. The story is hot from the beginning to the end. I can see why it was included in the Harlequin Blaze series.

Harlequin does not call it BLAZE for nothing!.......2007-01-26
Jamie McNamara is a client services manager extraordinaire. She finally has the job she has been working so hard for, with Bond-Worthington on Wall Street. After lots of sweat, Jamie has gotten herself on Mr. Newhouse's calendar. She plans to take the Newhouse account away from Goldman-Sacks, earning another star in her crown. Yet thanks to trouble at Grand Central Station she is late. Jamie ends up sharing a White Hummer Limo (the only thing available) with "Andrew". Whether from stress, her starved love life, or just a case of the "I wannas", Jamie ends up seducing Andrew en route to her important business meeting. But Jamie has no idea exactly WHO Andrew really is!
Andrew Brooks is part of Shearson, Brooks, Panhower, & Bloom. He got to where he is today by sheer determination and his personality disorder. (Hey, Andrew will be the first to admit that the disorder is very useful in the trade!) Andrew practically raised his younger brother and sister. When Andrew wants something, he goes after it; nothing is held back. And ever since his mind-blowing experience with Jamie in the Hummer, Andrew wants her again. Problem is that after a little too much alcohol Andrew made the error of telling his brother, Jeff, about his Hummer experience. Then Jeff tells their sister, Mercedes, because she has received another book rejection letter and he is hoping the story will cheer her up.
Mercedes goes to The Red Choo Diaries online and writes the HOT scene up for all to see. Coming from Jeff, Mercedes never believed the Hummer story to be true! Even the Wall Street Journal mentions the story of two Wall Street execs in the Hummer. The story is a hit! Everyone wants to know who Bull Market Jack and the Hummer Honey really are. People are even willing to pay for any information.
Should anyone learn that the Hummer Honey is Jamie McNamara, she will be ruined (much to a particular intern's delight) and Andrew may never get the one thing he wants more in his life - Jamie.
***** Wow! This story starts out hot, with the Hummer experience, and the heat blazes until the very end. Harlequin Blaze romances are for readers who enjoy more than a single love scene in their stories. Let me tell you this, author Kathleen O'Reilly delivers! You are going to L-O-V-E this tale. A successful hero who desires the love of an up-and-coming successful heroine, a believable plot, and a romance you will never forget. I am more than ready for book two! *****

Absolutely breathless...........2007-01-17
Kathleen O'Reilly starts The Red Choo Diaries with a breathless bang. Jamie and Andrew are instant chemistry and explosive heat. They both discover so much about themselves, surprising themselves as much as each other, and are more alike than either realized. It's an incredible journey to share with them.
Andrew's siblings, his sister is the writer of the "Red Choo Diaries", add a rich quality of humor and family ties that enrich the story. Beyond Breathless is written with an earthiness and a spontaneity that draws a reader in, hooking them until the very end.
Ms. O'Reilly is an author I've read again and again, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Witty, fun, fast-paced, great characters and a sensuality, Beyond Breathless is a contemporary romance that has it all, everything a reader is looking for.
Looking forward to more of these diaries. This is another hit for Kathleen O'Reilly.
Book Description
Breathless explores early sound recording and the literature that both foreshadowed its invention and was contemporaneous with its early years, revealing the broad influence of this new technology at the very origins of Modernism. Through close readings of works by Edgar Allan Poe, Stephane Mallarme, Charles Cros, Paul Valery, Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, Jules Verne, and Antonin Artaud, Allen S. Weiss shows how sound recording's uncanny confluence of human and machine would transform our expectations of mourning and melancholia, transfiguring our intimate relation to death. Interdisciplinary, the book bridges poetry and literature, theology and metaphysics. As Breathless shows, the symbolic and practical roles of poetry and technology were transformed as new forms of nostalgia and eroticism arose.
Book Description
Breathless, a low-budget film, came to be regarded as one of the major accomplishments of the French New Wave cinema of the early sixties. It had a tremendous influence on French filmmakers and on world cinema in general. Beyond its significance in film history, it was also a film of considerable cultural impact. In Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard captured the spirit of a disillusioned generation and fashioned a style, which drew on the past, to parade that disillusionment. In his introduction, Dudley Andrew brilliantly explains what Godard set out to accomplish in Breathless. He illuminates the intertextual and cultural references of the film and the tensions withiin it between tradition and innovation. This volume also features, for the first time in English, the complete and accurate continuity script of Breathless, together with Francois Truffaut's surprisingly detailed original treatment. Also included are an in-depth selection of reviews and criticism in French and English; a brief biographical sketch of the director's life that covers the development of his career, as well as a filmography and selected bibliography. Dudley Andrew is a professor of film studies and comparative literature at Yale University. He is the author of Concepts in Film Theory, Andre Bazin, Flim in the Aura of Art, and other books on film.

Good Piece of Information About a Great Movie.......2003-05-14
This book is a good guide to one of the most interesting movies of our time. This book not only gives the reader some background material about how it came to be, but it also has the script of the movie included for you to read. Even though there was no real script when the film was made, the editor of the book was able to break down the movie shot by shot and give the reader some sort of continuity script. The end of the book is filled with interviews and reviews of the film.
I think this book is a very good tool for those interested in the movie "Breathless" because it helps you understand not only the movie a little better, but the method behind Jean-Luc Goddard's madness. I would definitely recommend this book to those who want to learn more about this innovative and extremely interesting piece of film!

The arrangements in this collection are remarkably similar to the songs as performed by Kenny G. Many are even in the actualy performance key. If you're a Kenny G music fan and a piano, guitar player, this is worth getting!
Excellent Book for Weddings and Kenny G Lovers.......2000-04-05
Kenny G's book Breathless had all the songs and more that I wanted played at my wedding. The book features songs with intermediate and advanced playing of the piano and allows for the guitar to be added for a beautiful song. These instrumentals were the hit of my wedding and set the mood perfectly. Forever in Love is truly amazing! The songs sound exactly like the cd. This book was well worth the money and will be a keepsake for me!

Not a book about asthma as a physical ailment.......2004-08-15
I loved Desalvo's Crazy in the Kitchen and was very eager to read this book, as both my sons have asthma. However, I found this read extremely irritating. Of course, one can only write from one's own perspective, but Desalvo's perspective on asthma is so very different than that of so many asthma sufferers, young children. She seems overly involved in her own illness, and fascinated by her own symptoms, which do not seem terribly severe to me. Mainly, however, I was annoyed by her view of asthma as a illness caused by emotional trauma---a view that has long been discredited. Certainly it's a more interesting topic to write about than it would be to attribute asthma to traditional medical causes, and it allows her to explore asthma in literature, but it also reminds me of those bashing "refrigerator mothers" for autism. I think her asthma could be quite easily explained in part by living near NYC and driving through polluted air each day, and working in a closed building near smokers.
I think this book should be seen as a survey of asthmatics in literature, and not in any way as a depiction and explanation of asthma as a disease.
