5 out of 5 stars Best Diet I Have Ever Tried.......2007-09-14

I heard about this diet from a co-worker. He lost 25 pounds before his wedding last year, so when I decided enough was enough with my weight, I looked for information online. This book is easy reading and very informative. It explains how certain foods effect the insulin levels in your body. The idea is keeping insulin level throughout the day. The diet doesn't really restrict any foods except sugar. This is one of the easiest diets I have ever tried and the GREAT part is, I do not have cravings or hunger pains. So far, I have lost 23 pounds in 6 weeks with moderate exercise 3-4 times a week.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to GI Weight Loss.......2007-08-23

This is an informative book. So far I have not had much success loosing weight and it has been 3 weeks. I am probably not following the rules.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful!.......2007-08-14

A lot of what is in this guide is common sense but a lot is really helpful. I am a little stumped by the idea of eating a lot of veggies for breakfast but I'm figuring that out...

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative, Easy to Read.......2007-08-10

Even if you're not going on the diet, the information in this book will be very useful to you. It will probably at least influence the way you eat and solve the mystery as to why you get so hungry after you eat certain foods.

5 out of 5 stars Speaks to me in my language........2007-07-17

This is not the end-all be-all book on GI Weight Loss, but it contains everythig I need to know in language I understand completely. Following the GI eating principals, I've already lost 3 pounds in just 2 days. This will slow later, but I'm pleased to know...it works!

Well written, solid coverage..you will come away understanding the basic principals of GI eating, and what to eat when in order to create the weight loss you're seeking. It offers some recipes, but also information enough to create your own so you're not dependant on certain recipes.

Will definitely hand this off to anyone looking to understand the GI basics in "everyman's" lingo.

As I get further along in this, I'm sure I'll want something more comprehensive, and what's even better...this book has some great recommendations for more in-depth study/understanding, complete with pros/cons, etc...so you know what you're getting before you spend the money. Very impressed.

Sexy is as sexy does, according to Sari Locker (called "our favorite tantalizing sex writer" by Playboy magazine). But how to feel sexy if you're a virgin, or if you've experienced sexual problems, or have serious body image hang-ups? The Complete Idiot's Guide to Amazing Sex succeeds in not only teaching technique (as well as a book can), but also offers serious advice for boosting your self-esteem. As with other Complete Idiot guides, you'll probably want to turn this one backwards in your bookcase, or at least get a book cover for it. But get past the silly title and you'll find a plethora of facts, tips, and tricks on topics including sexual response, masturbation, foreplay, afterplay, oral sex, fantasy, sex toys, sexual preference, cross-dressing, and "The Big Om": tantric sex.

The margin notes liberally decorating the book are worth a hearty chuckle. The "Sextistics" are particularly fun and eye-opening. Some examples: only 9 percent of people surveyed believe sex appeal is innate; the rest feel it can be acquired!; about 7 percent of women have never climaxed; the majority of male crossdressers are married with children; and, according to the Hite Report, nearly 60 percent of men ages 61 to 75 said their desire for sex remained steady or increased with age, Viagra or no.

Locker, a sex educator and WCBS-TV relationship correspondent, has been a sex educator for more than a decade. That said, she should have placed the facts on contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases earlier in the book, before the hot and heavy photographs of sexual positions. That gripe aside, Amazing Sex is worth investigating by both sexual neophytes and experienced couples looking to maintain a state of hot monogamy.

Book Description

Most people know that there's more to sex than the missionary position. But to make sex really hot, some people need a little guidance. 5 out of 5 stars Amazing and helpful at the same time. .......2007-09-20

This is truly a good read about all things sex and I've many on this site, including this one and Sex Machine: A Man's Guide to What Really Pleases a Woman in Bed as well as other. I was amazed at the amount of know-how the author(s) put into this book. It's almost an A-Z kind of book with most subjects talked about throughout. It was really, really helpful. Don't pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-08-18

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-12

Loved this book. It just happened that at the same time I was reading this book I also saw a show in NYC called My First Time. It was a great combination. Added to the attitude of the book. Great read...and show...lol enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars It's ok........2007-08-03

I guess I was looking for something else but the book is good for general audience, who already know about sex and everything that comes with it. It describes woman's and man's sexuality, sexual relationships, self-pleasure, sexual positions, aging in sex, etc. Personally for me it was surprising to read that having sex in public is ok (as long as no one sees), like in the taxi, park or even kid's playground. Excuse me? I would much rather prefer this book to recommend against this. Another thing I disagreed with is that Sadomasochism is "healthy". No it is not, receiving and giving pleasure through pain is a psychological abnormality. Or role playing of pretending "mother and child", I am surprised such a suggestion was given. Except for these and few other points, the book is okay for general public. I personally sought something more on a psychological basis.

2 out of 5 stars Appropriate for Beginners Only- nothing interesting.......2007-07-31

I bought this book hoping it would be a guide to amazing sex, as in it's title. However there is a good portion of the book devoted to "high school" like sex-education: diagrams of sexual parts, discussions on contraception, etc. There is very little about the act of sex in here, and what is here, is nothing new or interesting. This book would be very helpful for high school students and virgins, but not for an adult. I was very disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I teach High School.......2007-09-13

This book is fantastic. Just have your students read the first sentence in the book...

"This is the book I wished I had in high school."

It immediately creates a connection with your students who have the musical interest. I use the book as my student's study guide and supplemental book for the class. The ear training is VERY helpful and if you teach theory, the more ear training you can find the better. I will keep this book as a part of my curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-09-08

Very good book!! From the beginning to the end. I personally recomend this book for anyone looking to learn about music. You will end playing your instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend for all with Music Theory Questions.......2007-08-29

I've loved music and been playing for a long time but always had difficulty understanding just what those teachers were getting at when they discussed scales and other theory. This book will make a huge difference with that.

It's very easy to understand, provides very thorough information, and covers more than you probably wanted to know. I've never used another book so I can't compare but I enjoyed this one so much I doubt I'll look too much for another.

Bottom line: Throughout this book I found myself thinking, "Why haven't I heard this before? It makes so much sense and will be so helpful! Why can't every teach music theory this way?"

5 out of 5 stars I'm buying three of these for backups.......2007-08-08

I have a total of 7 music theory books that I've spent some good money on, all have left me hanging in limbo land wondering what the F____ they are talking about.
This is the only book that breaks things down and sticks to the point.
I have to give a hand to the author on this one, because I'm getting somewhere now! This review comes from my heart on an issue that I've given up on more than once.

Thanks Mr. Miller, this book actually works and makes sense!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand.......2007-05-07

The content is well organized and, for me, brought together a lot of bits and pieces I had learned over the years and made it much clearer. The accompanying CD was useful and fun. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great companion book .......2007-09-04

This book was a great companion in simplifying Statistics for a Business class. It won't get you all the way there in comprehension, but doesn't hurt in the explanation phase.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty dry read.......2007-07-30

I bought this book to refresh my college level stats knowledge. I thought the author might make better use of how stat's are used in the real world, but for the most part he has not done that. Although he offers a witty and light tone to the book he does not provide many interesting analogies or real world usage examples that could have made this book much more entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and very responsive author.......2007-07-02

I purchased this book two years ago along with 4 others to help prepare for an employment exam. This was the only book I really needed... and it was the only one that was easy to follow and understand. I liked the practice questions and when I had a question on one of the them the author quickly responded! I wasn't expecting that!

I still reference this book - when it's in my posession. Many others borrow it, as I had aced the exam.

3 out of 5 stars The Idiot's Guide to Statistics.......2007-05-13

Book was very informative and easy to understand. However it did not discuss many of the concepts needed for my statistics class.

2 out of 5 stars Uninteligible gobbledygook.......2007-05-13

Typical statistics text peppered with some cute jokes.
Totally incomprehensible. Complicated Greek formulas that mean nothing to a layman.
Written for PHD candidates. Not for casual users.

5 out of 5 stars great Book!!.......2007-10-01

This book is very helpful in learning CS, it shows the difference in ASL, ES, and CS. The illustrations are clear and the DVD does help show what the sign would look like being signed at you. This book really helped the hearing person understand some of what is going through the mind of a deaf person. I was thankful for all the history ect. and the little tips to help you communicate better with the deaf world.

5 out of 5 stars An Idiot's Guide to Sign Language.......2007-10-01

This is the best book I have found on the topic. The book includes a wonderful DVD illustrating commonly used signs. I am a hearing person who will teach beginning sign to a group which has no knowledge of sign language. I, myself, need the book to prepare myself to teach. I learned sign many years ago, but am really rusty, and this book will help me to catch up. I would heartily recommend the book to anyone who is interested in learning sign language. The group and I will be learning (re-learning) together. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Conversational Sign Language Illustrated (The Complete Idiot's Guide)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Introduction to Signing.......2007-09-17

This is an amazing book. It is well written and easy to understand. The illustrations are excellent as is the DVD.

Our 5 year old grandson was born profoundly deaf and we need to be able to communicate with him when his cochlear implants are off. He lives in a small Midwest community and has little contact with other deaf people so Contact Sign is appropriate and was recommended by his Deaf Mentor. This book covers all of the basics and helps us understand much about the deaf community.

I have taken several ASL classes so have learned many of the signs, but syntax has been difficult for me to understand. This book resolved that problem and I am anxiously awaiting another book by these authors that will help me learn additional signs.

However, with the knowledge gained from this book, it is fairly easy to add a sign or two to one's vocabulary just by searching the internet--or by asking the expert--my grandson!

5 out of 5 stars Complete Idiots Guide to Conversational Sign Language.......2007-08-04

Great Book! Easy to read and understand! DVD makes it even easier to understand how to correctly make each sign. Will buy others by this author!!! Anne SLP

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-12

I am very pleased with my book. It is everything I expected and I am able to keep up in my class now thanks to this book. It has sign language and deaf culture as well all in one book. I would definitly recommend this to other class mates.

For a newbie, this is an excellent introduction. It shows you the way to proceed, if you're serious about trying. For the price, it is a bargin and should be kept as a reference. If you're like me, a yellow lighter can be quite helpfull. Well worth the price when you consider the large sums of money that can be involved.

This is a very informative book. It doesn't mess around with a lot of fluff. I highly recomend it!

5 out of 5 stars Provides solid information worthy of the Complete Idiot Guide series.......2007-01-22

I've always enjoyed the Complete Idiot Guide series. Why? Because it delivers the message down to earth. It takes highly complexed legal matters and shows you step by step on how to invest in foreclosures. If you want to make money in foreclosures or have wanted to invest in them, you need to read this book.

This is a comical and resourceful guide to foreclosures, offering an easy to read handbook on how to invest in govt or bank foreclosed properties. Other titles that helped me about foreclosures -- Investing With out Losing: The Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Tax Lien and Tax Deed Auctions

4 out of 5 stars Provides good information for getting started.......2006-11-07

Provides a large amount of information in a concise but easy-to-read format. Considering all of the nuances of buying foreclosures, from the legal considerations to the occupation stage, the author does a good job of capturing and conveying the essentials. The author also does a good job of communicating both public and private foreclosure opportunities, which is important in many states.
The author focuses primarily on 'investing in foreclosures' vs. 'buying a foreclosure for your primary residence.' Consider this when comparing to other books.
Could have used more specific information on where to look for foreclosure opportunities, but the book does mention that actively searching and networking is a key to the game.
Overall, a good, easy read with valuable information for anyone wishing to enhance their real estate expertise.

3 out of 5 stars Microsoft Project 2003 seems to be an afterthought.......2007-01-09

This book does a very good job of explaining the essentials of project management, as well as basic project management theory. The problem for me lies with the "with Microsoft Project 2003" part of the book - the lack of practice or at least example files. Screen shots illustrating various Project 2003 screens were just not enough for me - I needed to see (and the book should have referred to) actual sample Microsoft Project projects. In addition, it could have been a bit more comprehensive - I found that a lot of basic Project 2003 how to information was missing. Project 2003 is a very feature rich application and this book just scratches the surface. I think the Microsoft Press Step-by-Step volume is a much better introduction to using this application for project management (although not as strong on the theory).

4 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin.......2006-11-02

Good read that gave me lots of handy hints and tips, both in project management itself and in using Project 2003. A definite buy.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management with Microsoft Project 2003.......2006-06-30

I feel this book is easy to understand and implementable. I use the book daily to help me improve my event planning and managment.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Idoits Guide to Project Management w/ Microsoft Project 2003.......2005-10-15

Ron has delivered a powerful book for anyone that uses Microsoft Project 2003 because he explains complicated concepts in an easy to understand format. But this book is more than a software guide, it provides an enlightening approach to project management that makes this book worth reading for anyone in project management regardless of whether they use Microsoft Project or not.

Unfortunately, too many books and articles on project management offer poor advice. These are written by technicians who don't understand the real world - they focus on process instead of results. Project Management is simply the art of getting things done. Ron knows how to get results and reveals the secrets to getting the desired results. I've presented hundreds of seminars on project management, yet the advice Ron conveys in his easy to read style still opens my eyes to new ideas. This is a book everyone in project management must read. I know my copy will be worn out.

2 out of 5 stars good start - bad end.......2007-05-16

This book starts out well and it does thoroughly cover the basics of body language, BUT, the author begins to bring in personal little quips and finally gives in to personal ideologies and theories.
I really wanted to learn about this subject but the personal stuff became so annoying that I just threw the book away, too bad because it is a very important to know what is really happening with others.
The author says that "you're no idiot" but the he presumes to treat us like one.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Body Language.......2007-03-03

Let me first briefly mention my background. I hold a Master of Arts in Communication and I teach Speech & Communication Studies at one of the top community colleges in the US. I am fairly well versed in the research literature on nonverbal communication (NVC). I very much disagree with several of the reviewers of this book, though I do agree with the majority. Interestingly enough, I disagree with the reviews that are first seen on the site.

I think this book is awesome! It is the ONLY written-for-regular-people book on general nonverbal communication that I would recommend to others. While I have certainly not read every popular press book on NVC, I have read through at least sections of at least a dozen. All of the ones that I have perused contain ideas that are not supported by actual social scientific research. Dr. Andersen has written a wonderful book on NVC which is actually based upon real research.

(Quick note - there are other books written for regular people which deal with certain aspects of NVC which I would recommend. For example, I would recommend any of the works by Paul Ekman, John Gottman, Deborah Tannen, and Dane Archer; I would also recommend Brian Bates' The Human Face and Malcolm Gladwell's Blink. For a general book on nonverbal communication, though, Dr. Andersen's book is the best I have ever read.)

There are a couple of reasons why I suspect some of the reviewers did not like this book. I don't know that my suspicions are correct, of course. However, here is what I suspect is going on. First, I suspect that those who did not like the book are not aware of the current research in nonverbal communication. I don't mean that in a "snobby" way. Most people don't have the time or inclination to read scholarly journals. Second, I think some people wanted the book to contain the "secrets" of body language. They wanted to be able to almost read people's minds based upon their nonverbal cues. In other words, they wanted Dr. Andersen to say something like, "When people look at you and tilt their head in a certain way, it means they are thinking this way." Dr. Andersen repeatedly points out the inherent ambiguity in NVC and so, he does not include any bogus "secrets" like that. The viewpoint that you cannot read someone like a book is supported by the research in NVC but does not seem as exciting as claiming that you can.

I would like to address one criticism that a couple of reviewers level at the book. They say that Dr. Andersen states the obvious in the book. As a matter of fact, he does do this a bit, but I do not consider that a bad thing at all. Stating the obvious can raise our awareness of what we already "know." Let me give you an example. I often have my students do an activity where they get into pairs and be very good listeners for each other. They do this quite well. So, they "know" how to be good listeners. At the same time, I ask them to be aware of their listening behaviors outside of the classroom. Many of them report behaving in ways inconsistent with effective listening. So, they "know" how to be good listeners; they just don't do what they "know." By raising their awareness of what they already "know" about good listening, they are able to become more effective listeners.

I don't want anyone to misunderstand. This book is not just what you already know. There is much in Dr. Andersen's book that goes beyond what most readers probably already "know" about nonverbal communication. Many people might have heard that communication is only 7% verbal and 93% nonverbal. This is FALSE!!! It is NOT TRUE!!! Dr. Andersen points out on page 4 that these sorts of statistical claims are bogus and he tells you why. In Chapter 2 he discusses the relationship between the bicameral brain and NVC. This discussion goes way beyond "if a person smiles it means they are happy." The discussion of haptics in Chapter 6 goes beyond what you would typically read in a brief discussion of touching behavior. I learned some new stuff about olfactory communication in Chapter 9. The chapters on gender and culture contained some ideas that I doubt a lot of people will have thought about. For example, Dr. Andersen points out that men and women are not from different planets. I think anyone who has bought into the John Gray "men are from Mars and women are from Venus" concept should read this chapter.

Let me sum this up - I am reviewing this book from the point of view of someone who teaches Communication Studies at the college level. I am familiar with much of the research on nonverbal communication. I do not know Dr. Andersen personally and have no financial reason to recommend his book. This is the best general book on nonverbal communication I have ever read and I unreservedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

1 out of 5 stars Open the book when you get it..........2006-12-03

I bought this book as a gift, & only by chance did I open it. The cover is right, however, the pages of the book contain "restoring collector cars". Imagine how embarrasing it would have been to give that away. Amazon was great & returned without hassle.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money . . ........2006-06-10

This book is so basic and boring. It lacks in visual aids and verbal explanation of the few visuals that it does have. I'll save you some money and some 400+ pages... In a nutshell this book says if someone is smiling they are happy, if they frown they are sad, and if their brow is furrowed they are angry. At the moment my brow is furrowed at the waste of time this turned out to be.

'Nuff said.

3 out of 5 stars lack of sufficient pictures!.......2006-02-22

The book is a piece of art, but it needs a supplement of additional pictures demonstrating eyes & face language!

5 out of 5 stars Will Definately help you write music.......2006-06-29

This is undoubtedly the best book i've ever read on music composition. Be warned though, if you do not have a background in basic music theory the concepts in the book may be a little confusing. However, if you read Miller's other book the guide to music theory first you should have no problem picking up the concepts in this book. I cant say enough good things about Miller. This book is full of so many great things and yet he writes in such a way that even someone with just a basic background in music can understand him. If you follow what he says you will definately be able to write your own compositions

4 out of 5 stars O.K. follow-up to Music Theory.......2006-03-05

This is a very good book. It elaborates on the Idiot's guide to music theory specefically in the area of composition. My only gripe is that the first half is very redundant with the previous book. Many paragraphs are identical. I would have been much happier if they had been embellished, or if the two books would have been combined into one larger volume. The book does go into much more detail later on, with topics such as rhythmic patterns etc. Still the first half doesn't even feel like a review as much as it feels like Deja Vu.

4 out of 5 stars A good start, but lacking in places.......2006-02-01

On the positive side, the book is very helpful in starting composition. While at times laconic, it covers pretty much all the basic areas of composition, starting with an intro into what you can do and what you will need and going on to harmony, melody, rhythm, and even touching on atonality. It explains the key ideas behind development, the use of phrasing, and even the ranges of common instruments and notes on transposing them.

On the negative side, it often fails to explain things as well as it could. For example, while the book gives a basic explanation of atonality and minimalism, it doesn't really say much about how to really use these techniques. While development is discussed well, actually creating full-length pieces seems to have been glossed over and there is little information on how various musical forms like the sonata or concerto are actually structured (something I struggled with for a long time).

Overall, an excellent introduction, but not really a complete guide in any sense.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect follow-on to Idiot's Guide to Music Theory.......2005-10-31

Just like this author's previous book, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory", information is presented in a very readable way without losing necessary details. The author presents many musical examples and each chapter has exercises with some solutions included in the back of the book. This book is designed to be read from beginning to end, and the exercises are very instructive in that by doing them you WILL learn how to compose music based on formal techniques. This book consists of 18 chapters in 5 parts, with each part showcasing a different aspect of composition. Since Amazon does not show a table of contents for this book at the time I am writing this, I shall summarize for the purpose of completeness:
Part 1 is entitled "Before You Start," and it describes different types of composition, and discusses the tools needed to start composing music.
Part 2 is entitled "Harmonic Composition," and discusses the art of composing music, chords-first. Also described is the creation of a harmonious chord progression, using both standard and extended chords, and using chord substitution to create more sophisticated compositions.
Part 3 is labeled "Melodic Composition," and introduces melody creation techniques, including scales and modes, structural tones, embellishments, rhythm, syncopation, melodic contour, flow, tension and release. Also discussed is fitting chords to a melody and reharmonizing existing chord progressions.
Part 4 is entitled "Developing the Composition," and gives instruction on transforming a composition from something basic to a substantial work. Short melodies are transformed into a full musical piece. The use of repetition, variation, and creating multiple-voice compositions is included.
The fifth and final part of this book is entitled "Advanced Techniques". The subject matter moves beyond basic composition into more advanced musical areas. Orchestration, chromaticism, atonality, contemporary composition, and ultimately songwriting are discussed.
I would therefore highly recommend that you first read the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory", and then this book for someone who wants to self-study music theory and composition. These two books are particularly valuable to someone who is familiar with the computer and would like to get into computer music but does not have a formal education in music. These two books will get you up and running to the point where you can understand what some of the computer music books written by musicians are talking about.

3 out of 5 stars Fine but boring.......2007-08-06

I tried this book and had a hard time playing for more than 10 or 15 minutes before boredom would overtake me.
I then picked up a copy of David Harps harmonica book "Instant Blues HArmonica" and , I kid you not, I was playing harmonica and having a blast within 30 minutes and had to pull myself away. Now, I'm no virtuoso but I can do a little jamming and have been having a good time.
