Product Description

Smoke Your Firefighter Interview is packed with 330 pages of invaluable information. Chief Lepore covers 85 of the most commonly asked fire department interview questions. The format is simple: question, answer, and reasoning behind the answer. After answering each question, Chief Lepore carefully and thoroughly explains why he has answered the question the way he did. These reasons often delve into the culture of the fire department and the expectations of a rookie firefighter. In short, anyone can memorize questions and answers. Smoke Your Firefighter Interview explains why the answers are correct. In addition to the questions and answers, Chief Lepore explains the rationale for WHY he answers the question the way he does. He includes many follow-up questions as well as explaining the pit falls for many of the questions. Once a candidate understands the interview process and learns how to present his or her answers, it is not uncommon to get multiple job offers. Instead of struggling to land a job, many candidates are blessed with the ability to select from several departments. Getting hired on the fire department is all about learning to take a fire department interview. Those who learn will be successful, while those who don t will always struggle. A candidate may be exactly what a fire department is looking for, but if he or she cannot interview favorably, he or she will never get hired. ALSO AVAILABLE ON CD

Just on the first couple of pages and so far I have learned so much wonderful information! This book is so helpful.

Deanna's Husband Jay says....Best book I've used to help candidates get promoted or hired. So far my rate with this book is 100%. Granted we live in a small community there has been ten who have used this book and have either been hired or promoted. This is a must have if your looking for a job as a Firefighter.

5 out of 5 stars I am so glad I bought this book.......2007-07-01

Finally, there is a study guide for the interview process! After reading it, I was better prepared and more confident for my last round of interviews and ended up receiving the best scores that I've ever had. This book goes over several types of actual interview questions and then supplies a rationale for why one would answer them a certain way. These insights into what the interview panel is looking for helps train the candidate to think about the questions the same way a successful firefighter does. These are real interview questions, the guidance and suggestions are valid and helpful, and the windows into the thought processes of an experienced, successful and knowledgeable Battalion Chief are invaluable. I am not only a better interviewee for having read this book; I will be a better firefighter as well.

5 out of 5 stars Totally broadened my way of thinking.......2007-04-03

Great book! I have gone to probably 7 or 8 fire dept interviews and just now got the book before my last interview. I read most of it and practiced answering a lot of the questions with fellow candidates. It definately opened my mind up to the way of thinking that you need to answer a panel interview question thoroughly and concisely. I just found out I passed the last interview and am moving on to the chief's panel.

This book gives many examples of typical interview questions for those newer candidates and hones the thinking and reasoning skills of people who have been repeatedly bombing interview questions. I'm confident I will do well on the chief's interview coming up thanks to Chief Lapore's insight.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Prep Tool!.......2007-02-17

This book gave several examples of interview questions. Some of these questions were on my interview. This book allows you to get into the mindset of the interviewers and gets you into the frame of mind to formulate the answers they want to hear. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation.......2007-03-09

I found this book to be very informative. A big part of my job is interview and interrogation. This book was able to put into context what I have already been doing for a number of years. I found that I was referencing the book in my head as I watched the people I was speaking with and knew by their actions how truthful or untruthful they were being. If this is the type of work you do the book is a very good read.

Among his many gifts, Joseph Campbell's most impressive was the unique ability to take a contemporary situation, such as the murder and funeral of President John F. Kennedy, and help us understand its impact in the context of ancient mythology. Herein lies the power of The Power of Myth, showing how humans are apt to create and live out the themes of mythology. Based on a six-part PBS television series hosted by Bill Moyers, this classic is especially compelling because of its engaging question-and-answer format, creating an easy, conversational approach to complicated and esoteric topics. For example, when discussing the mythology of heroes, Campbell and Moyers smoothly segue from the Sumerian sky goddess Inanna to Star Wars' mercenary-turned-hero, Han Solo. Most impressive is Campbell's encyclopedic knowledge of myths, demonstrated in his ability to recall the details and archetypes of almost any story, from any point and history, and translate it into a lesson for spiritual living in the here and now. --Gail Hudson

The Power Of Myth pretty much explains why we are here, and what we can do about it.
I can't think of any single book that showed me as much about myself, my mind, and how I fit into the grand dance of history as Powers Of Myth. It takes the great Bill Moyers interviews and lays them out in a beautifully logical fashion.
There is more deep thought and simple logic about the world's religions and myths here than in any other book I have found; Campbell's favorite theme, that all religions come from the same sources and have the same message, is clearly explained. More importantly, the wonderfully wise author takes that information and shows us how to use it to make our lives richer and more meaningful. What a glorious man, and what a glorious book. It's not only a fine introduction to Joseph's extraordinary work, it's a fitting summation, and a tribute to how much one man can learn and share and grow in a lifetime.
Makes a perfect gift for anyone at any age who likes to think.
    My highest recommendation.

A more popular look at myths and mythology, using this format to relate Campbell's studies and other works to mythological type influences that we see today, even in major media and popular culture or entertainment situations.

When Campbell points it out, you sometimes realise what you are subconsciously missing.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible and clear.......2007-08-06

This is the audio to a PBS special from the 80's. It's done in a conversation between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell. For some people this may feel like there is no structure and that it meaanders through the topic. But, for me it felt more like I was sitting in a living room as they talked to each other.

I've talked to people with lots of knowledge on this topic and they've said that Campbell is sort of the popular science or myth-light version of this topic. It was just the right amount of depth for me and interesting how he personalized myth for people in modern day.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best storytellers of our time!.......2007-07-28

This was required reading for a graduate course in the Humanities. This is a great book written by a very engaging storyteller. Joseph Campbell describes the monomyth in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces as embodying all the necessary elements of the hero's journey in the many myths in human history. Campbell discovered through extensive research that humankind shares a universal monomyth in its various religions and legends especially pertaining to the creation of the world and humankind. Campbell borrowed the term monomyth from James Joyce's book Finnegan's Wake. Campbell's intuitive insight in human myth proves that for thousands of years these myths display a certain standard structure, which he summarizes beautifully in his book.

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a
region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there
encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back
from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons
on his fellow man (Campbell 30).

There are at least four major stages that a monomyth has however, in his book, Campbell goes on to describe seventeen stages that some monomyth's posses. The four stages making up the cycle of a monomyth are "passage: separation-initiation-return:" In the passage stage the hero is summoned to journey or embark on an adventure by some kind of event that takes place or from a message, he receives. The hero may embark on this passage willingly or reluctantly. During the separation stage, the hero meets with a mentor or wise man who gives the hero either an amulet or some words of wisdom to be of help to the hero on the adventure. It is during this stage that the hero will go through his first transformation, also known as "crossing the first threshold," as he crosses over to another world or dimension leaving behind the old world. In the initiation stage, the hero goes through several trials or tests. The hero often receives help in these ordeals along the way by allies or from a supernatural force. As the hero completes these ordeals successfully, he proves himself more worthy to continue the adventure. Most importantly, during this stage the hero must pass through a major ordeal that will expand his consciousness, and thereby change his character forever. Often, this ordeal entails the death of an ally or enemy. Once the hero successful accomplishes his ordeal he is rewarded with a gift, it could be intrinsic like the "holy grail, or it can be new found knowledge to better the world with. The last stage the hero travels is that of the return whence he came. Often the hero will undergo further trials on his return before he is permitted to cross the threshold back to the world he left. During his return journey, the hero will use his newfound wisdom or gift to make a safe return home. Once home the gift is used to cure some ill in the hero's home or to impart new wisdom to his neighbors.

Campbell points to the significance of the monomyth in the fact that it describes the cycle that Moses, Jesus, and Buddha had gone through according to their religious adherents. This is not to mention the hundreds of other monomyths told throughout human history. The monomyth proves that humankind shares a common creation DNA in a sense. The monomyth is the perfect vehicle for one to study the Humanities by.

Recommended reading for anyone interested in history, psychology, philosophy.

    3 out of 5 stars Intellectual stuff.......2007-06-27

I have tremendous admiration for the author Joseph Campbell and also for Bill Moyers, who did the interview. Both are tremendously intelligent, well-read and capable of verbalizing opinions and explanations in a very concise way. One would glean more from reading this book if a bit of "reqired reading" had been done previous to the reading. Our book club found the book challenging because we lacked the necessary background. Having such background would have made the book read faster and also would have enlightened our understanding as we read. However, we were all glad we did read it.

Well written, easy to use, practical guide to questions you are very likely to hear in your interview. While the claim to provide the "best answers" may be arguable, the questions were on target and the ideas for how one might answer them were excellent. This book is great for those who hire as well as for those who are seeking employment. Worth the investment.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm working!.......2007-02-11

I have been out of work for a little over a year, and all my previous employments were temp jobs so I needed to brush up on everything. After reading the reviews I decided to go with this book.

I have never regretted it since and have recommended it to close friends. I kid you not when I say that during my interview I ended up interviewing the interviewer. Before the interview I did what the book said and read up on the company and found out that they had won several awards which I later mentioned to her. Apparently none of the other candidates did their homework b/c she acted impressed over that. I asked questions concerning downsizing, why she chose to work there, how long has she worked for the company, her management style. She was very friendly and very talkative...ended up telling me about her daughter in college, her background (which I found out we were raised in the same country!), etc. Making sure not to discuss salary/benefits with her (something the book recommended and I stuck to until I met the VP who gave me what I asked for) And eventhough I had to be tested after speaking to her, I was confident enough to ask her questions during the test and be honest about things I didn't understand. She even showed me the tricks behind the test! Something the recruiter said was not done with anyone else. The only thing I wished I had done was my homework in salary negotiating. So for those of you out there, do your homework on salary and negotiating tips before the interview! Do get this book for you high school/college grad. It's easy to read, down-to-earth, and for today's job hunters.

    3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2007-01-28

There was some good information in this book. However, there's very little new infromation that's not available for free somewhere else. What's you're paying for is mainly the time it took the author to compile the infromation gathered from numerous places. Most people serious enough to buy a book like this probably won't have a problem finding work anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Land your dream job!.......2006-11-24

I bought this book because I was told of pending layoffs due to selling a division of the company. I had been there almost 5 years, so I definitely needed to get a review on my Interviewing skills.
This book prepared me with questions that might be asked, possible answers and questions that cannot be asked. I especially liked Ch.10 "Stress Questions" These type questions really make you think about your career, where you've been and where you intend to go. Answers to these questions, I feel, enable you to elaborate on other questions that might be asked during an interview. It really is about the applicant as a whole and what you have to offer that company.

This book helped me land my dream job (seriously) and I hope it does the same for you!

4 out of 5 stars A good book to review when looking for a job.......2006-11-21

If for nothing else the books forces you to review your work history and have every bit of information about your self available.

The numerous questions will help anyone become more familiar with one's self and be able to answer most any question without hesitation. This book does not have ALL the questions, but just reading through it and answering the ones present forces you to be aware of all your experience (good and bad). Now that you know your "work experience" you can turn it into a resume and better sell your self.

The book was a definite help for me.

and it got my 4 stars dispite the downfall I find so typical in every DSM I read.
The positives first. The questions provided will definately help beginning therapists, etc, access enough information to begin formulating a diagnostic picture. In my experience, clients range from open to guarded, chatty to quiet. The one constant is the time takes for clients to develope trust. I never get exactly what I need to make an informed eval within the first few sessions without precise information. I ask the questions, and then ask them to give me an example. The criteria necessary to justify a label is concrete....How often..?..What are the triggers...? When....? How much......? What reduces.....?
The problem I have with this and all DSM's is the weak framework within which axis II factors are diagnosed. No matter how many texts I read, Personality Disordervery difficult to diagnose and often imitate each other on so many levels. This Manual doesn't explain how many boundaries are blended and behavioral. etc histories are similar.
Still, if you are learning to become an effective diagnostician, I think this book provides a perfect way to access info.

I think the book is great in content, and for $11 I jumped at buying it. The only disappointment I had was how small the book was. Its literally pocket-sized, and I didnt remember seeing that in the product descriptions, so if you have reading glasses, you will need them for this small book

5 out of 5 stars Small, concise and helpful........2007-03-18

This is a great small tool to use while assessing and diagnosing a client. In addition to DSM content, it suggests questions to ask in your interview to help determine diagnoses.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for all clinicians.......2007-03-11

This is a great tool for all clinicians. It would also be helpful to those that are not in the mental health field as well. I cannot say enough great things about this book. It breaks down the DSM into questions and an interview. The questions are simple, apply to all patients, and makes diagnosing easy.

4 out of 5 stars This can really help in Abnormal Psych & Clinical Interviewing courses..........2007-01-09

This small and handy book is great for people studying to be counselors or clinical psychologists. Allows you examples of questions for many of the disorders in the DSM-IV to help you learn how to ask questions. I did wish that the book was more comprehensive with more example questions but it did the trick for me as it is.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Package.......2007-09-14

Coming from medical school, business cases were a bit intimidating and unfamiliar. Case in Point really decoded the whole process in a way that one can understand in a couple of hours. Of course, the book's practice cases are the biggest help as there is no substitute for thinking through these problems. I must say, Case Questions Interactive on the author's website was just as important in my preparation - and something must have worked because I landed an offer from McKinsey! I can't speak for those coming from a business background, but for those without much relevant experience, Case In Point is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars This book is your best friend..........2007-09-10

This book helped me get the job at the #1 mgmt consulting firm !!!
Prior to this book, I had spent a lot of $$$ of various case books, none of them which seemed natural to me and were overly complex to use for real world cases.....

Case in point changed all that...I recommend the 5th edition. I read and reread through most cases a week before the big day. Cosentino's method is simple and natural and widely applicable to a variety of real world cases. This book provided me critical structuring and thinking skills that firms looks for. I received a huge confidence boost. Billion thanks to the author for this case-saver...

    4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-08-08

Especially useful for those who are new to the case method.

I used this to get started and now feel a lot more comfortable with doing practice cases.

5 out of 5 stars Great Prep for a Consulting Interview.......2007-07-26

If you are going to interview for one of the big consulting firms (McKinsey, Bain, Boston Consulting, Booz Allen), you should prepare yourself with this book. To really feel confident in an interview, you'll probably want 3-4 weeks of prep time with this book. So, if you anticipate getting an interview with one of the big consulting firms, pick this up and start reading. It worked for me.

    5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-07-22

Marc's book is great. It helped build the skills and confidence for my interviews. I read the book 5 days prior to the interview and practiced the lessons and received an offer.

    Thank you Marc.

P.S. this and the vault case guide are the only books you need to get a consulting offer.

3 out of 5 stars OK for tech exams - but there are some errors in it .......2007-09-30

Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.

    5 out of 5 stars Really GOOD.......2007-08-16

As a reference book to mantain you in shape it's Ok too.

4 out of 5 stars All pilots must have !.......2007-01-12

All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected !!!.......2006-11-07

Marvellous edition with tons of technical questions nicely ordered by topic. A must have for every (commercial or private) pilot even for people not looking to go on interview straight-away, but just want to brush up their knowledge.

    3 remarks:
    - I have to agree with the previous reviews on the fact that there are plenty of errors, the least the author/publisher could do, is build a list with errata.
    - some more illustrations would have been nice - but it is no reason for not buying this book
    - pitty there's no CD with a quiz of the covered questions, but then again: it's a book (not software).

    5 out of 5 stars Great resource!!.......2007-08-14

A friend, who is working on her LCSW clinical hours, recommended this book. I am an MSW student and while studying methods for doing psychosocial assessments this book was a very valuable resource. It has words and phrases that are clear, succinct, and convey meaning quickly and clearly.

I highly recommend it for all MSW students, social workers, and LCSW's.

This book has been extremely helpful, especially when I'm writing progress notes. I highly recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2006-11-12

A great companion for the newly practicing therapist to "get in the groove." An ongoing resource when one's flow of words is just dribbling rather than flowing. Preferred the ease of the earlier editions' spiral bounding - but the CD has been adequate compensation.

    5 out of 5 stars Clinicians Thesaurus.......2006-11-11

The best book a therapist could buy for documentation purposes and clinical summary purposes!

4 out of 5 stars Great help for clinical reports.......2006-11-06

This book is really helpful when learning to assess clients and write clinical reports. It was well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth Reading.......2007-08-23

The book was full of practical and extremely useful examples. Easy to pick up and put down and digest in short bursts. Easy to focus on specific areas of concern -- not a textbook. It generated ideas and provided insight about how the interviewer thinks... well worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars Informative book, got a job right after reading it..........2007-03-08

Excellent book. The information was there and straight to the point. It was an easy read. I don't know if you will be able to use all the questions (because I couldn't) but I was able to find a good number of them. Also, had an interview with a major software company (guess) and they were very impressed with the questions. Went on to the 2nd round interviews. :-)

5 out of 5 stars A must have that'll give you an edge.......2006-12-09

In the world of job-seekers there are job-interviewers. Most of job-interviewers are bad because:
    1) They were summoned at the last minute to interview you and didn't even read your resume
    2) They have no interviewing skills and have no ideas about (a) what they are looking for and (b) how to ask questions
    3) They just don't care of being good at what they do since the odds are in their favors and that there are no negative ramifications if they're not as good as they can be.

This make a lot of job-interviewers throw questions at you. Just because they don't know what to ask or simply because it is intellectually more difficult to come up with a good probing questions.

I have some of these guys ask if you have a question and then ask again and again and again.

They are putting the burden on you to talk, but at the same they just surrender the control of the interview to you. This is your opportunity to shine, and this excellent book will help you do just that.

The more time you spend reading and memorizing questions, the better your interviewing skills will be. The structure of the book is excellent and the way questions are structure makes it easy to use the book as a reference even when you're taking an interview on the phone!

This gave me an edge, and I've impressed more than one interviewers with my questions. If you do your research ahead of time and demonstrate that you have a good the knowledge of the company and its industry, there's no reason for you not to perform well.

A must have in your personal library.

    3 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff.......2005-08-13

Much of this book is fluff. He spends a lot of ink on things a reasonable person would never say or do at an interview. Also, many of his "serious" question seem ill advised.

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely Practical.......2005-08-09

I was waiting in line at the college bookstore, (buying a textbook), and this book was prominently featured. I thumbed through and was impressed at the straightforwardness of the questions. Making a list from these questions will, no doubt, give the impression on an interview, that you are focused, serious and organized. A worthwhile investment.
