4 out of 5 stars brief and well written.......2005-08-25

This little book could easily have been a fully fledged tome. Loss surveys the popular American media in the 1960s. He shows how it echoed and in turn fed back on the burning issues of the times. The Vietnam War and the civil rights movement.

There is discussion of politics at the Federal level, with the actions of US Presidents being key events. But Loss manages to tie this all into a narrative that also encompasses analysis of the rock and roll scene and the counterculture.

The book is aimed at an undergraduate or high school reader, as a quick synopsis of trends that Loss traces back to 1945 and the emergence of the US from the Second World War. He hopes to whet the reader's appetite for more detailed reading of these vast topics.

    Book Description

Children and the Movies analyzes the first and most comprehensive study of the influence of movies on American youth, the Payne Fund Studies. First published in 1933, these studies--reproduced here in their entirety--are intrinsically important for their insights and conclusions regarding the effects of movies on behavior. They are, moreover, an important landmark of modern social science research, demonstrating the rapid evolution of this discipline in American academic institutions over the first three decades of the century.

I bought this book because I wanted to take full advantage of online movie rental services. "1,000 Best Movies on DVD" is a great resource for selecting movies from the large libraries available from online service providers.

    5 out of 5 stars A great review book!.......2006-11-18

I loved this book and recommend it highly. My only caveat is to have some time set aside to read through it. I was up for hours and hours, reading his reviews of movies that I have already seen, remembering the highlights of great movies. I couldn't put it down. If you love movies, and if you love your DVD machine, this book is a match made in heaven. Buy it. Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars The best movie review book. Period........2006-01-26

I have several other movie review books and they're all sitting on the shelf collecting dust. So I approached this book by Peter Travers with some reservation. Not to worry, this is the only movie review book that matters. Here's why:

    1. Travers likes movies for the same reason you and I like movies. He's not trying to come across as a cinema professor. He clearly doesn't give a hoot about a film's rep with other critics - there are so called classic movies that aren't here and there are many others (e.g. Die Hard and Independence Day) that other critics would never include in a book of the best. When he uses terms such as "eye popping colors" and "gives your home theater system a real workout", it's clear that he likes movies like we like movies. Don't think for a second, though, that, based on those examples, this is oriented to modern action flicks. Every genre and every period is well represented. It's just that, for Mr. Travers, "good" doesn't HAVE to mean "old" or "foreign".
    2. Unlike other books which critique at least 5000 movies (often much more), Travers has done the filtering and focuses only on what he considers to be the very best films, especially focusing on those that come across the best on DVD. I love that approach. Why waste ink and paper (and your time) to review crap like "Jaws 3" and "Nash Pluto"? By just focusing on the good stuff, Travers has a lot more space to explain why the movie is good. That makes every page in the book essential reading.
    3. He has wisely avoided a star system which just gets readers upset wondering why their favorite movie didn't get more stars. It also doesn't try to put them in order from 1 (best) down to 1000. He clearly thinks all these movies are pretty terrific and, by simply listing them in alphabetical order, it encourages you to read about them all. That ends up putting a lot more DVDs on your "must watch" list than you otherwise would have.
    4. Travers is a really entertaining writer, often quite funny too. These aren't cerebral pontifications, they come across as musings from a regular guy who happens to love movies. So that makes this more than just a reference book, it's one you really enjoy reading cover to cover.
    5. He does an excellent job in explaining why a movie is worth watching. For that reason, you'll have a much better idea whether each movie is one that you really want to see. In many cases I could see why Travers was so impressed with the movie, but his detailed description made me realize it's just not my thing.

The worst thing you can do is dismiss a book like this on the basis of the movies he left out (or included). Face it, no two people are going to have the same views on 1000 movies so put the quibbling aside in advance. This book is not meant to be a list, it's meant to help the reader find great DVDs to buy or rent. After reading this, you're certain to have ticked off at least 150 DVDs that you really want to see. And you will have been greatly entertained in the process. What more could you want from a book of this type?

3 out of 5 stars Makes a mistake about Bruce Lee.......2006-01-14

When describing Enter the Dragon it claims the film is Lee's first speaking English. Wrong! Lee spoke english before in a movie he made with James Garner and Caroll O'Conner a few years before. Good enough book outside of thsi though I disagree Brando was so ultra-great in On the Waterfront and bad in Superman.

    Book Description

The Films of John Cassavetes: Pragmatism, Modernism, and the Movies is the first book to tell in detail the story of a maverick filmmaker who worked outside the studio system. Providing extended critical discussion on six of his most important films (Shadows, Faces, Minnie and Moskowitz, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Love Streams), Ray Carney argues that Cassavetes' work is a distinctly life-affirming form of modernist expression that is at odds with the world-denying modernism of many of the most important art works produced in this century. Cassavetes is revealed to be a profoundly thoughtful and self-aware filmmaker and a deeply philosophical thinker, whose work takes its place in the American tradition along with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James. The six films treated here emerge as expressive interpretations of the bewildering challenges in contemporary American cultural experience.

5 out of 5 stars Read and Reread.......2007-03-29

I doubt that I can say anything about this book that hasn't been said before but this is, by every measure, an outstanding examination of Cassavetes amazing body of work.
I go back to this book every six months or so and have for a number of years. It is a very thorough, reverent, and insightful reference book but it goes well beyond that. Though very full of information, it is personal enough that it has allowed (and encouraged) me to go and evaluate the films myself without the feeling that there is a "law" or an agenda already set with these films.
The greatest beauty of Cassavetes' films is that each one belongs to the individual; meaning that every person who chooses to lend his or her heart to the characters, stories, and subject matter(s) can get something out of it that belongs solely to that person. The films can excite, enrage, entertain, and rattle you in ways that films seldom do.

Cassavetes films make you more than an audience member as they make you more aware than ever that you just might still be human.

    Great book and highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars a very interesting and important book.......2003-09-06

I originally got this book and read the whole thing, before i had seen any of cassavetes movies. This is not a recommended route. I have now seen all of his films, except for husbands, and i can't tell you how amazing i think the importance of this book is. I wonder what the ratio is between the people who disagree and agree with it's context, in respect to it's attitude towards american cinema. the book really does rewire your brain. The people who i am friends with, who are also interested in film are dumb founded when ever i casually undermine 2001 or citizen kane in a conversation. More importantly though, this book, like Cassavetes films, extends into life and actually opens you up to knew spiritual territory
you didn't think about. One last point: Does any one notice how suprisingly objective Carney is when he mentions his most hated film makers like Spielberg ? Get this book. It may feel too intellectual, but it really isn't. If you think that then you are reading it too quickly and not thinking about what it's actually saying.

5 out of 5 stars Boring is as boring does.......2001-11-21

I'm not sure what book the reviewer below this read, but I don't know how many times I'd have to read about films that completely re-imagine the way I (and our popular culture) see the world and my own experience before I'd feel "bored" or anything less than inspired and envigorated. In fact, I read this book very often - not just to gain information, like a dictionary or an encyclopedia, giving me facts and figure data I didn't have before, but as mental calethenics, or something like spiritual openess training. This is a much more meaningful and important activity than thematic comparison and contrsating, no matter how technically interesting that is. As the concepts and points of view on the world process thru my brain as I read them off the page, I gain new abilities to understand and see - and this takes work, and often repetition. So I reccomend anyone who reads this book and hopes to gain insight, not just into Cassavetes and his films, but into their own personal attitudes, to keep themselves OPEN, as Cassavetes explicitly did in every frame of film he exposed, and to always give the artist (or author) the benefit of the doubt before passing judgement based on arbitrary ulterior motives (which, naturally, we all have). This isn't easy (especially to the greatly film cultured), but I dare say you'll enjoy this book, and your life, a lot more.

5 out of 5 stars Don't read it without support.......2000-05-10

Almost everything Carney says, you tend to utterly hate him for at first. His most recent article seemed so pessimistic that I spent an hour in my apartment, sitting in front of the TV depressed by it all.

Everything Carney writes tends to be tough at first, because, like Cassavetes, he mentions truths about life that very few people wish to confront. There is no evasion of reality in this book. People can be horrible to each other. We all die in the end. That's life.

Carney doesn't analyse Cassavetes' work in relation to other movies and cultural trends (as most film professors tend to do), but prefers to focus entirely on the performances of the characters on screen. Like Cassavetes, he never really explains the characters' motivations, but instead focuses on how they react to their environments. Everything he writes is about life -- you'll find nothing about tendentious compositions, popular culture, or auteur theory. The only important thing here is Carney's love for the characters and their creator.

One of the greatest books ever written on American film.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthy ordeal.......2000-02-28

I'd like to corroborate Matthew Langdon's review (above or below this one). I had the advantage of having Ray Carney as a professor at Boston University. By some stroke of genius (possibly by administrative accident), all entering film students were required to take a survey course from him on film art before taking anything else. Carney started with warhorses like Hitchcock's "Psycho" and made the roomful of us (vocally) do exercises during the screening that exposed the highly polished but rather ridiculously superficial artifice of the "classic film". We all thought he was crazy. Here was this man -- that one friend described as a combination of Andy Warhol and Orville Reddenbacher -- unsubtly undermining a number of the most globally revered films. He then paraded a host of highly experimental films (many from the library of Congress that practically noone outside of a Carney class has ever or will ever see) before us that were appallingly difficult and often downright confrontational. It's pretty safe to say that practically none of us really "got it" until long after that semester, possibly years. At some point I did. Carney loves film just like we all do, however he had recognized something that we (and, most likely, you, too) had not, that film can be so much more than anything we had imagined (or yet been exposed to). That's largely what he wanted to show us in this class. Film is still a nascent art, highly immature in scope and depth. So far, Cassavetes -- one of the EASIER filmmakers Carney introduced us to -- is one of the handful of film artists that has done something deeply new with the form since its inception. If you develop an interest in Cassavetes, you will find this book essential, and you will return to it after every screening.

4 out of 5 stars The measure of the Soviet experiment through the arts.......2000-04-02

This book does a great job of giving the reader an overall perspective of the Soviet experience through her arts. From the beginning optimistic nationalistic songs, to the later stories of the youth groups (Komsomol) and futuristic views of the USSR, the reader becomes enveloped in the pride the Soviets had for their country and the hope that they had in her. I became very interested in these passages and consequently became somewhat connected to their cause. I gained a lot of respect for the Soviet artists. However, one cannot help but feel a sense of sorrow that the project went wrong; it was, after all, the greatest social experiment in history. I cannot give 5 stars because I would have liked more visual arts; overall, though, an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars An important and scholarly addition.......2006-10-04

"Journalism In The Movies" by Matthew C. Ehrlich (Associate Professor of Journalism, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is a history of how Hollywood movies have depicted American journalism and newspaper reporters, editors and publishers from the beginning of the sound era in motion pictures down to the present day. Professor Ehrlich documents how film makers from script writers to directors have consistently presented journalists as men and women who see through lies and hypocrisy, defend the ordinary people from corruption, conspiracy, and criminality, and serve in the defense of democracy. From 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington', to 'All the President's Men', to 'The Insider', and more, the reader is provided with illustrative examples of films that reflect and shape public opinion with respect to the role of journalist in American society and American life. "Journalism In The Movies" is an important and scholarly addition to academic library Cinema History reference collections, and supplemental reading lists for students and non-academic general readers with an interest in journalism and the movies.

From A Brivele der Mamen, a 1938 Polish soap opera in Yiddish, to Zulu Dawn (1979), a lavish portrayal of African-British violence featuring Burt Lancaster and Peter O'Toole, the Blockbuster Guide is an A-to-Z resource of more than 23,000 movie reviews. Along with each concise summary/review, Blockbuster includes the year it was made and the number of stars (0 to 5) the film rates, who directed it and who acts in it, how long it runs and to what category it belongs, what language it's in, and most helpful of all, whether it's been released on video. In addition, there's an index of directors and their movies, an index of actors and the movies they appear in, and memory-aid boxes by each film's name so you can check the ones you've seen. The guide does an impressive job of providing vast information in few words, thereby allowing for a great breadth of listings while maintaining a manageable size, convenient to keep as a permanent VCR or coffee-table companion. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars Blockbuster Better Than Maltin.......2006-04-08

I have both the Blockbuster Entertainment book and the Leonard Maltin, and I have foound the Blockbuster to be far more complete and inclusive than Maltin's. Maltin doesn't even show James Arness. Eva Marie Saint, and a host of other fine actors that do appear in the Blockbuster edition. I wish Blockbuster would put out a more recent edition than the 1998 one.

3 out of 5 stars Editorializing, but OK.......2005-04-27

No one is going to agree with all of the movie reviews in this book, just as readers so often take issue with newspaper film critics. It would be nice to see a "just the facts" approach without quite so much editorializing on the individual movies, but with that point set aside, it is a decent guide. The indices in the back are perhaps the best feature, allowing you to look up a particular director or actor's filmography, and to find films by category (whereas the book as a whole is alphabetized by film title).

      1 out of 5 stars A movie guide from America's biggest censor.......2002-02-27

Trusting Blockbuster to write a movie guide is like trusting the wolf to take care of the sheep. Blockbuster, the company that bans letterboxed DVDs and independent films from its shelves (really), does not understand the first thing about movies. All they know is if it is a hot seller. Does popularity make a movie good? If you have no mind of your own, maybe so. But take a look at the shelves at Blockbuster for the really good movies that you missed in the theatre: Airplane, Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Valmont, etc. Oh, they're not there? Guess Blockbuster threw them out to make space for another copy of Gladiator. Really. Ask them.

If you want a good movie guide, try Roger Ebert's reviews or Amazon.com's Internet Movie Database...But stay away from Blockbuster -- and their books.

5 out of 5 stars A BOOK TO OWN AND FINDING MOVIES!.......1999-07-29

A definitive comprehensive book to have because it gives the actors & actresses their list of films for a collection you'd might have or don't to check mark off of. And tells how many stars it gives for the rating of their review. Last who's director of that film by Blockbuster Video!

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening look at America's first culture war.......2005-03-04

The early motion picture industry didn't just entertain audiences, it enticed them into movie palaces with spectacle, sex, and (increasingly) lurid tales of sin and seduction. This combination proved so successful that, by the early 1930s, a conservative religious movement emerged with an aim to "clean up" Hollywood's excesses, led by the Catholic Church but supported by preachers, ministers, and spiritual spokesmen nationwide. The Catholic Church's League of Decency became the first cultural crusade against what was perceived as a threat to the national character. Wielding an authority of equal parts religion and politics, the League saw to it that movies were banned outright, content was snipped and clipped, and production scripts were combed over for hints of immorality. Classic novels were re-written for the screen to pass the scrutiny of the hastily-created, reactionary Hays Office. Is this a good thing? There was a backlash among Hollywood writers; Black's recounting of William Faulkner creating the story of "Sanctuary" in three weeks ("the most horrific tale" Faukner could imagine, Black writes, "a morbid tale of rape, murder, sexual impotence and perversion") certainly seems like an outright challenge to the Paramount studio writers and censors, and the rewritten, completed film ("The Story of Temple Drake") turns the story inside out for a relatively less-scandalous ending.

Over the course of years, the Legion of Decency and the Hays Office's Production Code (which functioned as a presumptive industry watchdog) ensured that onscreen crime would not pay and immorality would be punished. Realism in Hollywood films got bleached out, but as the book makes clear the industry preferered to deal with religious moralists, and to police themselves with a nebulous code, rather than face government interference. In that regard America hasn't come very far, as the religious right's contemporary battles over entertainment and the morality of content in movies, TV, and the internet make clear. Recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Romanism and culture: A "B" Movie.......1999-12-30

What enabled one viciously anti-semetic Catholic, Joe Breen, to control an entire industry? This delightful scholarly tome gives a partial answer: the industry wanted to have its product go to the largest possible audience, despite local and national boards of censors. By censoring themselves, they obtained a pugnacious Irish Catholic who could browbeat bishops, state legislators, and others. The only price was to meet this one person's private moral code: to make movies that would not offend 12 year old girls in convent schools. This history of the Production Code Authority, and how it was exercised is par excellence. What gave Breen his power was a confluence of Catholic bankers, vertical integration from studio through distributor to exhibitor, coupled with mandatory booking at the exhibition level. The weakness for the studios was Catholic threats of boycotts at the midwestern exhibitor level where the studios were weakest. This book should be coupled with the author's "Catholic Crusade Against the Movies" and the pictoral "Sin in Soft Focus." An interesting footnote is the KKK response to the Roman Catholic Legion of Decency. Does the revival of Catholic horror of blasphemy, in the so-called Catholic League of the 1990s pose a similar threat? Probably not, since the Fr. Lord's Legion of Decency was focused on Jewish studio heads, and the Catholic League objects to Catholic movie makers and Catholic television writers. The PCA did more than condemn the use of angora sweaters in the finished movies, it forbade any movie that was social in comment or controversial in its politics. Somehow it even managed to offend William Randolph Hearst, a honor usually reserved to Orson Wells and "Rosebud."

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad at All for Such a Small Price!.......2003-12-18

Normally, I would read DVD reviews found in the internet (as they are up-dated on a regular basis) as I collect both NTSC & PAL versions. However, I did pick up this book out of curiosity (probably due to the low price). Can't say that it's really outstanding but it is useful to some extend. The obvious advantage is its small size, thus you could bring it anyway & read it during your leisure.

For those serious DVD collectors, then this is a must buy. For me now, not only I'm colleting DVD movies but also any interesting DVD books!

5 out of 5 stars Crowd roaring clapping for these critics.......2003-11-30

I've been a film junkie all my life. And every year I avidly read every review and buy every book (of reviews) that I can lay my hands on. I consider myself such a serious fan of film that I read so many reviews I end up being a critic of critics. Vincent Canby and Janet Maslin (both from The New York Times) always won the award for the two people I could totally trust. I must now double that list and add Alida Brill and Steven Scheuer to that small circle of respected critical resources. This pocket guide puts an end to the silly idea of a collection of quickly created paragraph reviews (like just about every other dvd book) and instead focuses serious attention and commentary on about 180 must see movies. And it explains, quite thoroughly, why you will need to add quite a few titles to your collection. In their review of the classis "Do The Right Thing" they start by telling the truth: "this film grabs you by the first frame." And to that I must add THIS book (The Pocket Guide) grabs you on the first page. If you are a fan of film, buy a front row seat to this book and sign up for one-click shopping on Amazon and other sites... because your DVD collection is about to grow much bigger... and smartly so.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it, but ..........2003-11-19

This is a really good book, and I do recommend it. This, and the Video Hound's Guide to DVDs series are the only ones I've found that describe and rate both the movie and the DVD, as most movie review books really only give capsule reviews of the movie and ignore the DVD extras. This book has in-depth reviews of 134 good movies and their DVD editions, whereas the Video Hound guides try to give a capsule review on a much larger set of DVDs. I think the reviews in this book are very good, and the information about DVD extras are even better.

However, there's one thing that I really didn't like about this book: It doesn't list any identifying information about the DVD, like the studio catalog number and / or UPC number. A number of the titles reviewed in this book have had several releases, and even though the review will mention which version to buy (at least by which studio released it), it's not always easy to pick it out of the review. They really should, at the very least, clearly list the catalog and UPC number of the versions they are reviewing at the beginning of the review (with recommended version if there is one), and ideally also use this information when they are comparing features of different releases of a title.

      5 out of 5 stars Truly Helpful.......2003-11-06

With all these "Special Edition" "Extended Version" and "Director's Cut" DVD's floating around, this cheap little book is worth the money to anyone building a library of DVDs. What's on the three-disk Fellowship of the Rings that isn't on the original DVD release? Which version of Casablanca has the interview with the writers? Which 80-dollar "Special Edition" of the movie is the same old DVD but in a fancy box with a poster? The writers of this pocket guide have watched all the supplemental material and can tell you what's there. They're not afraid to tell you what's worthwhile and what's drivel. As a screenwriter and an author (Crafty Screenwriting), I like to watch my DVDs over and over. I'm glad I've added this book to my library.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Classic Films on DVD.......2003-11-04

This is an excellent book for younger collectors who may not know about classic films. Also, I think it would make a good gift this holiday season, especially for those folks getting a new DVD player. The book was fun to read with lots of good information on collecting DVDs.
