5 out of 5 stars Entertaining detective fiction.......2000-06-12

This is a reprint of the first three books in the Archic McNally series when the characters were still fresh. The characters wear a bit thin in some later books of the series. The main player is Archie McNally, a modern day Bertie Wooster, who carries out investigations for his father's Palm Beach law firm when he is not chasing women or hanging out at the Pelican Club. He has a taste for fine dining and fashionable clothes (but does not wear socks), and dashes about in his red Miata, mixing pleasure with work. His investigations bring him into contact with a broad spectrum of society, from the successful to the dysfunctional, old money, new money, and working stiffs. The plots and the various characters are well developed.

I was impressed with Lawrence Sander's tale "McNally's Risk". I found it to be a very fun, easy book to read. The story flowed throughout keeping my curiousity at its peak. I couldn't put it down until I finished it - which only took one day! I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. I recommend this highly as fun, leisurely reading.

4 out of 5 stars See it on stage!.......2002-06-24

I'm ordering the script because I just saw " ...Fabulous..." on stage at the Trustus Theatre in Columbia SC and haven't laughed so hard in ages -- gotta have the lines in front of me now. Maybe it's because I'm in the religion "business" that the lines fascinate me - I don't think Rudnick intends for us to get overly theological about all this - but his extraordinary wit pokes fun at, challenges, debases and denigrates, a plethora of idiotic crap we have to put up with everyday in the name of religion. Blasphemy and sacrilige are not subjects he can be called guilty of. Humor, rhythm and flow of language he's guilty of, and it makes super theatre.
GO SEE IT somewhere - or convince your local theatre enterprise to book it. It sold out a dozen or more performances here (yes, in the Bible belt...)

5 out of 5 stars A great script and a good read.......2001-05-29

This book is completely readable and accessible as literature, even if you don't like theatre. Witty, funny, incisive and insightful, this is an excellent work that takes religion and turns it on its ear. While somewhat superficial, it's superficial in the same vein as Jeffrey (Rudnick's masterpiece). Rudnick takes the light and "flitty" stereotype of American homosexuality and uses it as a rapier to skewer his target--in this case, religion in all its forms.

While the subject matter makes it unlikely that the deeply faithful will read it (Adam and Steve? That's a homophobic bumper sticker for Heaven's sake), neither the premise nor the work itself is anti-faith or even anti-Christian. It does not answer the eternal Questions, but it will leave you with a different (and incredibly valuable) new framework in which to ask them.

A delightful read, and I'd love to see it on stage.

5 out of 5 stars Be prepared to LAUGH!.......2000-08-14

Paul Rudnick's amazing new play "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told" pokes fun at anything and everything involved with religion. Covering everything from Buddhism to Judiasm to Catholicism to Mormonism to Atheism, Rudnick leaves no stone unturned and spares no expense with his humor.

Divided in two acts, the play covers quite a gamut in religious theology. The first act recounts the "true" Biblicial couple, Adam and Steve, their fall from grace because of Adam's curiosity, and eventually meeting another couple, Jane and Mabel. Together, they survive a hilarious recounting of the Great Flood, and an even more hilarious recounting of a rather effemiente Pharoah refusing to let his "people" go because of his infatuation with the Moses/Brad character. Brilliant.

The second act plucks these people out of the Old Testament, and places them in modern day New York City, at a Christmas party thrown by Adam and Steve. The transition is seemless, due to Rudnick's ability to make it funny and believable. Rudnick leaves no stereotype unturned, from gay Santas to go-go boy elves, to a Public Access wheelchair bound lesbian rabbi (I'm not kidding) who steals the act. I rarely laugh outloud when reading a book, but I had tears in my eyes reading the second act. Excellent comedic writing!

Sometimes reading plays is very difficult because you need to see the action before you to appreciate attemmpts at humor. Not with this story. With Rudnick's copious stage directions, the entire play was acted out in my imagination very easily.

Rudnick's introduction frames the play quite nicely, assuring us everything religious was up for being a target in his play. If you are easily offended by religious humor, I suggest you stay away from this play. But if you believe in a God with a rich sense of humor, or believe in reading a funny, funny play, I cannot recommend this play highly enough!

PUPPET by Joy Fielding
September 9, 2007

Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars

Amanda Travis is a high powered lawyer who will do what she can to win a case. Her latest client is accused of raping his girlfriend, and despite the evidence against him, she is successful and gets him off most of the charges. She always gets what she wants, and has been successful because she's aggressive and is not afraid to step on anyone that gets in her way.

Amanda has been married and divorced twice, and ex-husband #1 has been calling her constantly, almost to the point of harassment, asking her to call him back. While she's in the middle of having sex with a stranger she just met, she decides to pick up the phone and find out what is going on. She eventually learns that her mother has killed someone with a gun in the middle of a hotel lobby for no apparent reason. The man her mother murdered is a total stranger, and Amanda cannot for the life of her figure out why her mother would do something like this.

As Amanda explores her mother's crime, she begins to unravel secrets of her own life, including the connection the murdered man has to her mother and her family. PUPPET may read like a sensationalistic soap opera, but while some readers may find the events totally unbelievable, one has to agree this made one hell of a story, and I had a hard time putting the book down. Riveting with a lot of action and suspense, PUPPET is yet another book by Joy Fielding that I enjoyed a lot. I have only one negative comment about the book - I did not like the main character very much. I believe the author intentionally wrote the character of Amanda Travis as a very manipulative and self-centered woman, in order to arrive at the end of the book where her life takes a turn for the better, despite everything she's learned about her family history. With that said, PUPPET was definitely one of the better books by Joy Fielding that I've read, and recommend the book with the warning that the main character is highly unlikable.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Mysteries.......2007-04-05

Although you might not like the main character, the storyline alone is enough to keep you guessing at every twist and turn.

4 out of 5 stars Puppet.......2007-02-12

I think this book was pretty good.
It starts off a little slow but picks up as you read it does have a few twist that you will not expect. It is not one of her best but not bad.

2 out of 5 stars Nah, not so much............2007-01-23

I listened to the audio CD version of this book. I find it very difficult to give up on a book once I start reading/listening to it, but this was a bit of a trial. I didn't like Amanda much, nor did I enjoy the snarly, hectoring tone of the reader on the CD--I kept having to turn her down because of the unpleasant tone all the way through the book. I know the character's tone is the reason for this, but it might have been easier to take with a reader with a lower voice. It put me on edge. Nor did the book make it easy to understand why Ben would ever want to mess with Amanda again. She was not a likeable character in the least, either when she was married to him or when she returns to Canada. She uses pretty much every man she meets, and it's doubtful that the big reunion at the end is going to change that aspect of her character. Too many of the mysteries were just ridiculous: Amanda's half-sister disappears from the face of the Earth, and none of the neighbors ever mentions her to Amanda? Her parents never, ever slip and mention the half-sister's name? Yada-yada-yada. Too many details are slipped in right at the end, so you never have the chance to mull them over to try to figure some of it out yourself. Definitely not a satisfying book.

1 out of 5 stars Close the Curtains on This Puppet Show!.......2007-01-16

Amanda Travis is another unappealing, unpleasant, unsympathetic character who can join the ranks of Fielding's other unappealing, unpleasant, unsympathetic protagonists. The New York Times book review calls Mandy Puppet "beautiful," when there is no evidence to support this subjective statement. Mandy's behavior made her anything but beautiful. A pie in the face for Mandy!

This story is set in 2004. Twice-divorced defense attorney Mandy Puppet Travis (another whinebag lawyer like Jess of "Tell Me No Secrets") has a practice in Florida. Her first husband, Ben, a 1950s wannabe bad boy calls her to defend her mother. Seems Mandy's mother shot a man outside of a hotel and nobody can figure out why. Since the lady isn't talking, Ben figures Mandy can slither back into her life and worm the reasons out of her. Mandy drags her feet at returning to her hometown of Toronto and she certainly wants nothing to do with her mama dearest. Naturally, Mandy and Ben relight one another's fires and admit that when they married, both were too young. Mandy's second marriage to Mr. Travis was the opposite extreme - she married a man much older than she who was genuinely a nice person. She used him and fortunately for him, they parted company.

Mandy acted a fool all throughout the book. She had a pathological aversion for nicknames of any kind and the word "puppet" sent her into orbit. Mandy had no compunction about picking up men and sleeping with them. She just used people and was a tiresome drone. It didn't matter to her if they were married or single. She picked someone up at a gym and later a seatmate on the plane. He went from seatmate to sackmate and Ben actually catches them together. One gets the impression that Mandy the Puppet staged that little scene for Benny-boy's benefit.

No, Mandy the Puppet just isn't a character you can like. She puts one in mind of Elvis' 1956 cover of "Hound Dog," where he says, "they said you was high class, but that was just a lie..." so true in Mandy Puppet's case. The supporting cast of characters are dull and tiresome. The "mysteries" as it turns out is simply a) why Mandy Puppet's mother killed that man; b) the man's identity and c) what connection did a woman with two pre-teen children staying at the hotel have with that man.

By the time you get to the end, you just don't care. You kind of wish they'd all just hop off the puppet stage and run behind the curtain. Talk about a Punch & Judy show! A good song to sum up this book is James & Bobby Purify's 1966 hit, "I'm Your Puppet." The ending, as duly noted by other reviewers was indeed unsatisfactory and yeah, even "creepy," just like Mandy Puppet.

2 out of 5 stars Willow.......2004-09-23

I just didn't feel for Willow as i had all the previous characters. The series starts with Willow as a college student, returning home after a tradegy in the family. i won't spoil it, so that's all i can really say. It's the typical set up, except i really wish that the series has started earlier in Willow's life, like all of V.C. Andrews other series. I just didn't get to know Willow, she was boring, and the relationship with Thacther Happened rather quickly in my opinion. I did manage to finish it, so that's why it gets 2 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Too boring for words.......2004-07-14

I couldn't get through the series because I found myself uninspired by the character. She lacked the drive of V.C. Andrews previous heroines. Her father lies about her real mother so of course she goes to find out about her blah blah blah. I mean her blandness reeks on every page.

I really don't recommend this book to any...it's sad to say since VC Andrews is my favorite author and i find her books very entertaining. I like reading things that don't necessarily stick to what people deem normal.

Willow was just too normal...I couldn't get past book two.

5 out of 5 stars This book was great.......2004-06-17

I believe this book was unlike most of the V.C. Andrews books I ahve read. It has a flair about that just wasn't like the others. Most of the other girls are dependabke on men. Willow was a strong women who held her own place, I can't wait to read the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Willow.......2004-03-27

Willow was a story that really spoke to me, Im thankful there was no, Your my half brother, or something on those boundries. I found I could relate to willow. Who isn't the perfect character, or thinks everyone should pity her. I found Thatcher Eaton to be one of those, rich guys, who makes trouble. The characters were well thought of, with there personalities, just like Flowers In The Attic was. This book really deserves your full attention. Because it will grab it anyway, if you don't give it your full attention in the first place.

Anyone who likes V.C Andrews will surely think of this book as a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!!!!!.......2003-11-24

Finally...V.C. Andrews' ghostwriter has written a book worthy of V.C. herself! I was sooooo delighted to find that this book did not once refer to the main character having sexual relations with any of her blood relatives nor ending up pregnant and having to get married. Willow was indeed one of the first strong characters I've seen since the "Heaven" series.....which was from 1987!!!!! I'm looking forward to digging into the remaining books of this series!

"Lawrence Sanders has honed a voice for Archy McNally that is wonderfully infectious. You can't help falling for him," says The Washington Times. Now "this raffish combination of Dashiell Hammett's Nick Charles and P. G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster" (The New York Times Book Review) stars in three delectable Palm Beach thrillers--a mix of suspense, sensuality, and high jinks. This treasury of Sanders's best is a treat for fans of his beloved Palm Beach bon vivant and playboy sleuth.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Investigation by Binky Watrous on Archy's Behalf.......2004-09-22

If you've read the Archy McNally books, you know he has a slightly daft friend who does bird calls, Binky Watrous. In this wonderful installment, McNally's Puzzle, Binky goes undercover at a bird store called Parrots Unlimited to find out who is threatening the store's owner, Hiram Gottschalk. Sancho Panza is a motivational consultant compared to Binky, and the complications are hilarious. You'll laugh until it hurts!

Before long, bodies are piling up in all directions. Who did it?

Here's a clue. The book's cover has a parrot on it. If you pay attention to the parrot, you'll get some important leads on who the guilty parties are.

Archy McNally is at his usual prissy best, more concerned about his wardrobe than the mystery. The ladies find him irresistible, and he feels obliged to help out. This gets him into trouble, as usual, with his main squeeze, Connie.

The actual plot is full despicable double-dealing. You'll be glad when the bad guys get it.

Great fun!

5 out of 5 stars Sanders best character in 3 delightful tales!.......2002-01-26

What a pure delight it is to read three of Archy McNally's crime solving adventures in one book! I spent an entire weekend laughing, and thoroughly enjoying myself reading how the brilliant rogue Archy McNally bumbles into a case (and at times into the bed of an attractive female) and how he solves a case. Each of these stories is definite fun to read from the beginning to the last page. I really do miss Lawrence Sanders...Archy hasn't been the same without him.

4 out of 5 stars When you need to laugh out loud..........2001-01-02

The main character, Archy McNally, makes these books worth the read! The witty dialouge and inner thoughts of this sleuth keep me laughing. His constant references to literature and music as befits the situation provide me with several bursts of chuckling which always cause my husband to ask what I'm reading. I also like (and share) his penchant for food and drink, and delight in the descriptions of everything he consumes. I usually have guessed the plot correctly half-way through the book, but I can't help loving Archy!

5 out of 5 stars Archy McNally-everyone's favorite playboy.......2000-07-06

If you've never read a McNally book before, try this set of three, because if you read one, you'll want to read more. Witty, charming, and as morally reprehensible as we'd all like to be, Archy McNally is the type of fascinating character you wish was real, just so you could take him out for drinks.

5 out of 5 stars Willow and Thatcher belong together.......2005-10-23

After I read Willow, I was thrilled that the book didn't include any of the usual incestual relationships found in VC Andrew's novels. Although there was an undercurrent of incestual thoughts on part of Linden for Willow, it didn't really come to it's full fruition.

I loved the character of Willow. The writers created a smart, ambitious, independent heroin. She was serious about her quest to find and know her birth mother, but she was vulnerable since the death of her father. When her college boyfriend failed to support her journey, it left Willow with a new fresh wound of vulnerability.

Willow had to marry Thatcher. She loved him and because she loved him, she wanted to trust him. That is her bottom line.

I would have loved to see the writers delve deeper into their relationship. It seems obvious to me that if they are both married to others and using their daughter like a pawn that they have unfinished business together.

The ladies who told Willow about Thatcher's infidelity was the writer's way of giving the story's heroin some female friends.

Finally, I have to admit that I cried during every part with Willow and Thatcher because I had a feeling that he would betray her in a most hurtful way. Willow has to deal with that hurt and I don't think that she has healed. Sure she divorced Thatcher and married her college professor, but that doesn't seem like closure enough for the love that they shared.

3 out of 5 stars Wicked Forest.......2005-07-20

This book had me bored out of my mind. About 3/4 of the way through is the only time it held my interest. Why did Willow marry Thatcher Eaton? I thought Willow was a mature, smart women. Apparently everyone but her could tell that Thatcher had been cheating on her. Duh Willow.I like her occasional bad attitude. Her snide remarks to the locals actually was kind of humerous.

3 out of 5 stars Why?.......2005-05-21

Can someone please explain to me why Willow marries the arrogant, ridiculous, unfaithful Thatcher Eaton? It's so pointless.

3 out of 5 stars Another good book.......2004-11-08

I have read all of V.C. Andrews books and whilst I did enjoy this one, I think it was a bit predictable at times. There weren't any big twists with this one. Still a good read, though. :)

3 out of 5 stars what the heck?.......2004-02-07

so, ok i liked this book until thatcher cheated on willow. that seems totally of character since it seems that he was so in love with her that he marries her even tho his family disapproves. and then with the quickness, he doesn't care. why is thatcher made into like this hero-type character but turns out to be a dingdong? they should've stayed together. that sux! willow doesn't even seem to love miguel all that much. the situation between thatcher and willow should've been discussed more. the ending was rushed and too abrupt. i guess i'll read twisted roots even tho i heard some bad stuff about it to get some form of closure. stuff like willow goes cuckoo and baby claude dies pisses me off. what's up with that? hanna better not be fathered by linden, that's all i no. what's up with the incest thing? that's not kool. there should be happier endings. sad endings suck!!!

Book Description

Working for Paramount in the 1940s, in the shadow of war, playwright and scriptwriter Preston Sturges directed a succession of exceptional comedies of which The Palm Beach Story (1942) is perhaps the finest. An effervescent, quick-fire, perfectly timed adult fantasy about the driving forces of sex and money starring Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea, and featuring the unforgettable Ale and Quail Club, The Palm Beach Story is classical Hollywood at its most accomplished. John Pym's finely crafted account recreates the subtlety and a dazzling energy of this near perfect film.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, Insightful, Expensive.......2001-04-17

The 1942 Palm Beach Story is one of the wittiest movies Hollywood ever produced. It's also one of my favorites.

John Pym, in this beautifully illustrated little book, touches on many of the film's most intriguing elements--the wacky, episodic plot, the rapid fire dialogue, the late Depression era fixation on millionaires, and the erotic charge that jumps between Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea. He also gives us a few details of director Preston Sturges's life that put some of the scenes and attitudes in a fresh perspective. One of his original contributions is relating elements of the the movie to the outbreak of WWII.

What he skips, for the most part, is the actors. With his focus on Sturges, who also wrote the script, Pym appears to undervalue the contributions of the actors whose presence on screen makes Sturges's words sparkle. Throughout the book he writes mostly in terms of the script and the characters when discussing a scene, while in my mind I see and hear Rudy Vallee, Claudette Colbert, and the rest.

Overall, however, this book is a valuable companion to the film. The British Film Institute would do themselves and us a favor by combining five or six related "classics" titles into volumes of reasonable price.

4 out of 5 stars Money or nothing.......2005-01-04

A very realistic written novel about the life of the very rich in Palm Beach. It is entertaining to read how they live a life without working. If you're dreaming of such a life first read this book, it is possible that you won't be happy in the end. Next to the money and detail about how to spend your life in wealth you will find two intriguing love stories in it with a lot of sexual detail. The story keeps you reading and is entertaining until the last line on the last page. Enjoy it.

This is the author's third work of fiction after her bestselling autobiography, THE PRIZE PULITZER. The book will undoubtedly make enjoyable reading for those who like Harold Robbins.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Read for Lounging on a the Beach on a Hot Day.......2000-04-06

Roxanne Pulitzer's novel, The Palm Beach Story, is sizzling to say the least. Amid the world of jet-setting socialites who drop money like one drops a napkin and fast men who like fast women, fast cars, and fast boats equally, enters Megan "Meg" MacDermott. Sent from New York to Palm Beach, Florida to photograph these people who live "in a world [where they have] two pools, one to catch the morning sun, another the afternoon," Meg is a definite outsider. She also comes to find out that the man for whom she'll be working (she will be a photographer) is just as much of an outsider despite being a successful billionaire (Hank Shaw is the publisher for GL -- Good Life -- magazine).

Once inside their world all bets are off: A wager is made in regards to Meg, and who will bed her first -- will it be Spence Kendall or the Italian playboy, Count Monteverdi?; the Count's wife, Ashton, has ulterior motives as to why she invites Meg into her circle of friends; and all the while, danger looms over one of the characters, which proves to effect all in the private and decadent enclave of Palm Beach forever.

The Palm Beach Story is definitely a mindlessly entertaining novel. It has the three Ss necessary for light enjoyment: steam, sex, and suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting story........1998-12-19

I finish reading this book in 6 hours straight. It tells a great story of 4 women seeking new life in Palm Beach and how all them from different background eventually become friends. Each of them have their very own secrets, dreams and problems. It tells about the close friendship they share despite knowing each other's history.Although the mystery is vague but it is worth reading. I had never read a book by Roxanne Pulitzer before. But after reading this book, I am looking forward to read her other books.
