Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

1 out of 5 stars A Gothic Silver RavenWolf.......2006-11-10

This book is a laugh and not much else. This guy is the uberpale, black-eyeliner-wearing, black-hair-dying version of Silver RavenWolf: cheesy, full of himself and completely useless.

Aside from that, the idea of nocturnal witchcraft is highly impractical. Yes, a lot of us are night people and work better at night. But this guy is practically suggesting a WORSHIP of the night, like some sort of Wiccan vampire or something.

Don't waste your money or time on this book. You have better things to do at night, like REAL witchcraft, or even sleep!

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2006-05-29

Although most people have a misconception of witchcraft, it is only because they hate and fear what they do not understand. This book explains everything very well, and is easy to relate to if you are more of a "night" person that feels more empowered by the night. I related to this book so well because he makes references about his life habits and interests that seemed to be similar to my own.

2 out of 5 stars Pseudo-religionism.......2006-02-11

I knocked this book from someone that ordered it, but got to the store after me :-). I made the mistake to buy the book by the sound of its title. And author. I fell for it this time..... It is not the first Konstantinos text I buy and must say, this one helped me make up my mind. It seems highly obvious that the author is abusing the commercial value of the "black arts" to get to the spectrum of rebellious teenagers that would "sell their soul" just to make a statement at large. Well well, if that aren't following the routes of the christian church we so dire to critisize.... The practical aspects are not well thought through and I suspect, just as unknown to the author as to the guys that made the front page. Practise is either made as difficult as possible, or serves as an example of the inability of the author to explain some basic concepts. It does show that the author is jack of all trades, but master of none. I would advise readers that are seriously interested in the topic to acquire the texts of Frater U.D., which I find much more fascinating, as well as educational. I would therefore advise this text for any pseudo-black-art-wannabe with little interest in the occult.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Work.......2005-08-31

with all the flower and crystal type new age books on the market claiming to "know" the truth about magick it is nice to see a book that takes a realistic look at an often misunderstood faith. now this is not to say that nocturnal magick is more or less than any other legitimate forms of goddess/god worship merely this book is a perfectly written overview of one aspect of the religion. Konstantinos is an excellent writer who manages to get into the history and logistical aspects of night time magick without it reading like a shopping list or sounding like a 101 course. a perfect book for those who wish to learn something not extracted from ignorant 30-second soundbytes on the evening news, a must read and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Useful resource..........2005-06-17

Though I'm inclined to agree that 'Nocturnal Witchcraft' seems to be "trying to cash in on Blair Witch-style, neo-Goth hype" as J. Gelling wrote (especially when you look at what's written on the back of the book) I think it may not be as much the intent of the author, as it is the aim of his publisher. I suspect Konstantinos is gothic himself, so I can hardly blame him for writing about what he knows.

I found it a very useful resource to balance the countless books on Wicca, most of which seem to focus on the 'light' side. It is indeed important to understand that 'dark' is not synomymous with 'evil', and I did not feel that Konstantinos overstressed it. In fact, he only covers that aspect in the beginning of the book.

I am not "good dark", as Konstantinos calls it, but I there was a lot in 'Nocturnal Witchcraft' that has helped me improve myself. I found his way of 'drawing down' Gods particularly inspiring. When I invoked my patron Goddess during Mabon last year, I felt her embrace unlike ever before. For that reason alone the books was already worth reading. Of course, the technique will probably work differently for everyone, but for me it worked!

Besides an invocation technique, Konstantinos provides us with excersizes to improve psychic abilities, ritual techniques, and a starting point for nocturnal Gods. He doesn't provide the reader with much information on Gods (only a general overview), but I think it is exactly what the author intents. In order to truly know a Deity, we must go on a personal journey ourselves. There are hundreds of books available on Greek Gods and Mythology alone. All I needed to know was a name, and I could start searching.

It is important to keep in mind that the 'truth' is inside you, and not every aspect of each book will ring true to you. I found I disagreed with Konstantinos frequently. Nonetheless, his view helped me balance mine better. I am a better witch today.

I would not advise this book as a starting point in Witchcraft, there are far better books available for beginners, but it may very well be an interest read for someone who has practiced Witchcraft for a couple of years. It served as a refreshing point of view, and made me re-evaluate my own perception of the world.

Book Description

Czech animator Jan Svankmajer is one of the most distinctive and influential of contemporary filmmakers. As a leading member of the Prague Surrealist Group, his work is linked to a rich avant-garde tradition and an uncompromising moral stance that brought frequent tensions with the authorities in the "normalization" years following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Svankmajer's formative influences have been the pre-war surrealists, the Prague of Rudolf II, experimental theatre, folk puppetry and, above all, the political traumas of the past 50 years. Like his contemporaries--including playwright president Vaclav Havel, and, in exile, novelist Milan Kundera and filmmaker Milos Forman--Svankmajer's dominant life experiences have been the realities of the Stalinist system, both the explicit state terror of the 1950s and the Brezhnevist neo-Stalinism of the 1970s and the 1980s. After training in puppetry and working in the Prague theatre, he made his first film in 1964. He directed a number of important films in the 1960s, including the live-action and Kafkaesque Byt (The Flat, 1968) and Zahrada (The Garden, 1968) and consolidated his international reputation with Moznosti dialogu (Dimensions of Dialogue) in 1982. Since then, he has continued his highly visual and poetic approach in two feature-length films, Neco z Alenky (Alice, 1987) and Lekce Faust (Faust, 1994). As a filmmaker, Svankmajer is constantly exploring and analyzing his concern with power, fear and anxiety, confrontation and destruction, magic, the irrational and the absurd, and displays a bleak outlook on the possibilities for dialogue. In challenging accepted narrative, the "bourgeoisie" of realism (nezval), and the thematic and formal conventions of the mainstream media, Svankmajer's work is startlingly dynamic, subversive, and confrontational.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surrealism at its best.......2005-11-16

Jan Svankmejer is one of the most talented stop motion animation filmmakers currently working. Unfortunately his brilliant films have had only limited release in the United States and little in-depth reading is available on him and his body of work. Dark Alchemy provides some very interesting essays on Svankmejer, the history of Czech film, and surrealism. Those who do not have a film background and a good understanding of surrealism may have difficulty in understanding a lot of what is discussed, much of which would be considered heavy academic reading. The exception being an in-depth interview with Svankmejer. In fact one or two additional interviews with Svankmejer covering some of his specific films in depth might have made for a more well rounded book.

4 out of 5 stars Surreal Art Made Real.......2001-02-11

Finally reaching a broad audience with his first feature length film, Alice, in 1988 and later with Faust in 1995, this filmmaker has gained his due attention. Dubbed the Animator of Prague, Jan Svankmajer ranks as perhaps the most prominent member of the Czechoslovakian Surrealists.

Peter Hames has studied Svankmajer's art for many years and brought his store of knowledge to bear as editor of this collection of well-written essays. Most of the essays focus on Svankmajer's development as a surrealist and, to a lesser extent, a mannerist. Also, they explore his use of tactile objects and the concepts that undergird their use. For the person exploring the foundations of Svankmajer's art, this book is indispensable.

Hames includes an interview he conducted over several sessions with Svankmajer that is particularly illuminating, especially since English translations of Svankmajer's words are few and far between. Svankmajer speaks candidly about his place in the history of Surreal art, his personal theory of artistic creation, and the state of art in Europe.

One article within the book will challenge even the practiced reader. Frankly, this particular article possesses a density and obscurity that might make better sense if left untranslated.

If you are as fascinated with Svankmajer as I, purchase this book. If you are a casual fan, you might want to explore other sources before buying this one.

5 out of 5 stars Darkness, Magic, and Truth.......2007-03-22

Enter the mysterious world of magic, sexuality, and the deepest part of yourself. This is the goal of "Dreaming the Dark" by Starhawk, author of the bestselling book "The Spiral Dance", considered essential reading in most Wiccan circles. Picking up where her other books leave off, "Dreaming the Dark" is a guide for putting one's beliefs into practice, an attempt to reach out to a world largely deprived of spiritual experience and reclaim the sacred within and fuse it with political activism.

Starhawk co-founded the Reclaiming Collective, a Wiccan tradition that emphasizes spirituality and political action, and a majority of the text is focus on examining structures of power. She separates power into two categories: "power over" and "power from within" and discusses how such structures have been used throughout history to suppress and control. Magic, as Starhawk defines as "the art and practice of changing consciousness at will", can be teamed with political action to cause effective change in our society and help to preserve what we hold as sacred.

For those unfamiliar with Paganism, "Dreaming the Dark" is the perfect collection of stories, chants, and bits of information that will give the reader and accurate portrayal of Pagan paradigm. Starhawk clearly examines what Witches and Pagans hold sacred, specifically Nature and how it is essential that action is taken for preservation. Beautiful and often poetic descriptions of the Goddess and rituals paint vivid picture of the triumphs and struggles of many in the Pagan movement.

"Dreaming the Dark" is not a book for the faint of heart, but it is necessary. It is challenging yet inspiring and deeply moving. For anyone interested in modern religious movement and especially those interested in politics, it is an essential read. "Dreaming the Dark" is not a book of spells, meditations, or ritual, it is an invitation, a calling to take a stand in the face of injustice and reclaim the whole of our being.

4 out of 5 stars The Personal Is The Magical.......2006-02-06

This is the book that made Starhawk's name as the preeminent voice for politically active Wiccans. It is a call to rescue the world while there is still time, recognizing that magic is not contained in any book or ritual, but relies upon the love we put into life.

Why only four stars, then? I met Starhawk and was completely surprised and dismayed to encounter someone whose manner was more akin to Marie Antoinette than a daughter of the Dark. If magic is the manifestation of our lives, this cannot be less the case for how we regard and interact with other people. I worship the Goddess--not the princess.

The story of great analysts, artists, or technicians whose personal way of being in life lessens or even refutes their professed principles, is an old one. Each of us should meditate upon the challenge of never becoming consumed by our "stage presence" or stardom; the urgency of the real work to be done is too great for such poses or pretense.

5 out of 5 stars Challenges for the Modern Pagan.......2005-09-20

This book was the first, and so far only, pagan book that I have come across that asks the question "now that I know what I believe, what do I do with it?" Many pagans are uncomfortable with this book because it presents a pagan ethic: that if you believe, and follow your faith, your faith will demand that you act, and work to bring change. And this is difficult for people, especially those who are in the broom closet.

True, the context Starhawk works in is political activism, but the framework she illuminates is the framework for any change - within yourself, your family, your community, or this world.

Dreaming the Dark is challenging, which is perhaps why so many people shy away from it; it's demanding, which is perhaps why so many react negatively to it - not wanting to meet the challenge, they instead denigrate it.

It is a difficult read. Not because Starhawk goes out of her way to be academic (in fact, the book is quite poetic and beautifully and passionately written) but because she's talking about concepts that our language has not developed commonly used words for. She has to redefine words and build a language with which to express her ideas. Still, without a doubt, this was one of the most grown-up and rewarding reads I've ever dedicated myself to in the study of paganism.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2004-08-28

The writing skillfully integrates annecdotes with philosophy and there are exercises useful to any group of pagans. For Starhawk, Witchcraft and environmentalism and activism and gender awareness are natural companions; what Witch doesn't care about the earth and nature? What Witch would not know the power of the individual and of people together? How can anyone who honors the Goddess not strive to be aware of gender politics, sexism, and the power of sex? What Witch would not know the power of will, awareness, perspective? But as natural and integrated as these themes are for her, some traditional Wiccans and other pagans are very hostile about Starhawk. There is a lot for even non-pagans to learn from her, and I think every serious pagan should read her work. If it upsets you - please, ask yourself why; what exactly does she threaten? This book is dated, and the history is only as good as we (all) knew when it was first published, but if you want to understand group dynamics, if you ever wondered if Witches should be political, or environmentalist, or activist, or gender aware - read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Ecofeminist Book.......2004-08-05

In this inspiring book, legendary Starhawk combines the wisdom of the women's spirituality movement with anarchism and radical environmentalism. It should be required reading for anyone involved in peace and social justice activism.

Book Description

Take a thrilling walk on the dark side with Konstantinos! The author of Nocturnal Witchcraft presents a collection of magickal techniques for working with dark forces. Developed and tested by Konstantinos, these rites and rituals have proven to be quite powerful in harnessing nocturnal energies-even helping the author overcome a serious medical condition in a miraculous recovery that shocked doctors!

Drawn from diverse sources-ceremonial magick, folk magick, ancient Greek ritual, and divination-these techniques enable magicians and novices to conjure and control primal energies, thoughtforms, Lovecraftian entities, egregores, sigils, and other forces. Those attracted to the dark mysteries will relish Konstantinos' bold exploration of sex magick, death magick, altered states, dream grimoires, and forbidden tomes.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Good on the darker aspects of conventional imagination.......2007-07-22

This book is good on the darker aspects of conventional imagination - what most people think the occult to be - but it misses the point.
Sure, drugs can be a shortcut behind the veil, but the experience isn't lasting, and is quite dangerous for a good percentage of the population, especially when undertaken alone.
This book is a lot of things - if you want to imagine occultism as being easy - like it is in the movies - ok, but this book in not for a serious occultist. They will find it laughable.

3 out of 5 stars Fun Transgressive Magic You Can Do At Home.......2007-06-28

Konstantinos certainly seems to have decided that goth atmosphere is more potent for him, personally, than the trappings of traditional magick. He makes some remarkable claims in this little personal grimoire, including powerful personal healing resulting from the techniques he suggests. I see no theoretical reason why this might not have happened, and big results often lead magicians to publish the strange stuff that they did to get there. That's what this seems to be, if Konstantinos is telling the truth.

The book consists of a series of exercises that draw on classic motifs of dangerous or evil occultism - drugs, demons, sex with corpses, etc. In each case we are taught how to imitate some of the atmosphere of those experiences in ways that are, relatively, safe and sane. Of course, the author takes pains to explain why these things are just edgy, not evil - and the instructions are careful to avoid harm.

An effort is made to present entirely new framing rituals, openings and closings that replace 'circle castings' or other temple openings. I think the author sacrifices the baby with the bathwater here, presenting things that are simply not as cool or useful as traditional rites.

Personally, I'm too much of a Lovecraft fan to take Necronomicon occultism at all seriously, though the author explores the idea of the Dream Grimoire nicely. Some time is spent in a simple overview of early 20th century german occultism, and a fairly cool electro-occult rite is offered.

If you dig the notion of the Black Arts, and already have a solid ritual system that you can work in, you might find some inspiration in the Nocturnicon.

2 out of 5 stars Shoveling the old B.S........2007-03-09

If rites, ritual, prayers, incantations, and suchlike actually had any power to"alter reality",everyone-and I do mean everyone-would have everything he/she wanted...The world would be filled with people whose health was great, whose cares were zero, and whose lives were wish fulfilment personified...
Take a look around you now,and with your eyes open...Where do you see such a world, populated by such people?YOU DON'T!
This book, and all of the others like it,are written so that the authors might profit,as well as the publishing houses...And if one is interested in "gothic"styled fiction(and that is fiction with a capital F)then "Nocturnicon"or any of the hundreds of other bogus grimories that are published yearly will suffice...if,on the other hand, you are looking for some sort of an UNREALISTIC panacea, something that will involve a few chants, some sweet smoke, and ,presto!,you have regained your health,or have won the lottery,or have found your"soul mate",then keep dreaming...
"Nocturnicon"presumes that you are weak-headed enough to believe that because you want something enough, and you have a strong imagination, and are willing to follow the directions in this book, you can actually "change"reality or bend it to your will...Now I will be the first to admit that changing reality is easy,in the commonsense aspect..Everyday we make choices, and these choices ,those made and those not made, constitute our reality...Certain things, however, will not be changed just because we want it so,or think that our will is strong enough to make it so...This book, and all of the others like it,tap into that audience out there who will not accept reality as it is,and instead presumes that he/she can change it to his/her will and design,if ONLY the proper spells are cast,if only the right "spirit"is called upon,if only the right incantations are uttered...If this is you, then buy this book..if,on the other hand, you understand that, despite what we may want,or even need, there are limitations to what we can do,and that many aspects of this world are just not amendable to the sort of changes we might wish...if this is you don't bother with this book...

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2006-10-06

To anyone out there book bashing: feel free to ef off. This book is REAL magic, and REAL scary. You will get results if you use the methods in this book with an open mind. If you walk away from the ritual with "I knew it wouldn't work," then you don't yet qualify for having an open mind, FYI. This book has made me afraid of the dark again. Life will never be the same now that I know what is actually out there. This is not Luciferian worship, it's non secular magic that uses dark forces opposed to other types available.

Either grab this book and conquer the night, or turn away without words, because you know not what you speak of. If you'd like to remain in the world of normalcy and live without fear and the 6th sense that this tomb will awaken, don't touch this; it will damage you.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet reading for all us nocturnal creatures .......2006-01-28

New York-based occult author Konstantinos (and yes, that is his real name) is a famous name within the darker aspects of the occult. Over the years he's published a total of six books with Llewellyn - books that are all aimed at and written for Nightkind; that is, creatures of the night, people with a somewhat darker (but not necessary evil) view of magickal workings and who prefer the darkness of the night to the light of the day. He's also written numerous articles and appeared on many different TV-shows. In other words, he knows what he's talking about.

And in Nocturnicon he talks about magick being done at night. As with other books of the same category (not necessarily about darker aspects of the occult, but definitely about magick), this is not a book written in an attempt to convince skeptics that magick does indeed work. And it's not some sort of summary about the history of magick and the occult, even though historical references does pop up from time to time. No, this is instead a manual for the believer, a tool that you can use to summon the dark forces that are hidden somewhere in the dark and the infinite universe that surrounds this planet of ours.

Many books about magick contain rituals that are very difficult to do, demands years and years of practice, and include accessories that aren't always very easy to find. Nocturnicon is, however, nothing like that. The rituals and exercises described here are easy to do, don't require any bizarre and impossible demands of preparation, and if you do them correct you'll see the results in no time. Konstantinos is an honest author. He discusses how the use of absinthe (not the legal stuff but rather the old, traditional version) can affect the imagination in great ways, he doesn't deny that illegal substances that help in opening up new aspects of your consciousness, and sex magick isn't too taboo to write about.

Still, please note that it's NOT a "pro-drugs book" or kinky anthology about sleazy sex. Far from it.

If you're a diehard skeptic who doesn't believe in anything that has to do with the occult and magick, then Nocturnicon is probably one of the worst books you'll ever buy. However, if you're open to new possibilities and perhaps even feel instinctively that the darkness of the night affects you in a very special way, then there's really no reason for why you shouldn't run as fast as you can to your nearest bookstore and get a copy of Konstantino's latest work.

He actually succeeds in being amusing, thorough, controversial, funny, and serious, all at the same time, and if you add the fact that the book itself if extremely pleasing to the eye you'll realize that Nocturnicon - Calling Dark Forces and Powers is a book you cannot afford to miss.

Note to the reader of this review: I usually don't give 5 stars to a book, since most books have at least a few flaws that lowers the grade, but occasionally it does happen. This time it did, but rest assure that Konstantinos' latest is worth every single one of the five stars.

I give you my reviewer's word on it.

4 out of 5 stars Short, and definitely to the point!.......2007-03-14

"Out of the Shadows" was an easy read. I finished it in one afternoon. The content did not drag or oversimplified anything. It left the responsibility to the reader of how to use and digest the info within. Some readers will be a little disappointed in the curt statements and explanations about the Gothic culture, the dark religions, etc., but I think the intent was to get the info out into the open with no apologies intended. Definitely a good read for those who are honestly wanting to explore (not dabble) the 'darkness'. It's like a good snack that should not be eaten like junk food day after day.

5 out of 5 stars Darkness.......2007-01-08

An excellent book on Dark Paganism. I finally found what I was looking for. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the Dark Magick.......2006-01-05

I might have been expecting too much, but I was disappointed with this book. I did not learn anything on Dark Magick per se. The first half of the book is about a variety of subjects like, Goths, Vampires, Lost Souls, the Collective Unconscious, Dark Deities, Satanism and some other stuff. The second half is about Magick, but it sounds more like High Magick to me. Where's the Dark Magick?

4 out of 5 stars I like.........2005-10-12

I like this. It is good and dark and Taylor Ellwood says good stuff that's true about this. Yup..Dark and good..Exploring all dark paths that many books do not do, not just linked to one dark path. This is good, and his column in New Witch is..also good. Take care, Vanes

5 out of 5 stars Excellent exploration of an all too often taboo subject.......2005-09-16

Like the title and introduction of the book says, this is an exploration of dark paganism, magic, and also other darksiders in general. Written by a man whose personal aesthetics have been interwoven into his personal spirituality, he has a unique perspective.

There are numerous topics explored in this book, and the author rightly says in the introduction that each could have filled several chapters or even a whole book! It's an introduction and primer, and highly recommended to all Pagans and Wiccans to gain a deeper and more balanced understanding.

It's best to also keep in mind that while the issue of balance within earth-based pagan paths, especially Wicca, is emphasized; the book is about Dark Paganism. To paraphrase the author, balance does not always mean equal. Such is the case with this book. Beyond challenging us to personalize our paths and to bring back balance, the book's focus is to prime the reader on the darker side.

Personally I found the best parts of this book to be the chapter on the Shadow, the exploring of emanations such as "auras" (free of New Age influence), a pagan/nature-based look at ghosts and a refreshing take on possessions and hauntings. But the best is saved for the second half, the chapters on magic theory. By far the best I've seen, it's both powerful and simple.

Run a search on the author: his website has a preview to the book. Also, if you liked the book and want to go a little further the website has more beyond the pages! Including: essays by several authors, a list of recommended books (very excellent if a bit short in this reviewers not-too-humble opinion), and links to other resources.

I hope that this review has helped those it can, and I wish all you seekers a pleasant day.

Book Description

Dr. Sylvia Strange - forensic psychiatrist and expert on criminal sexuality - returns in a thrilling new suspense novel and comes head-to-head with a terrifying serial killer whose weapon of choice is a poison nearly impossible to trace and, when ingested, nearly impossible to counteract. A baffling series of deaths have occurred over the span of a decade in some of the most prestigious research laboratories around the world. Now Dr. Sylvia Strange, forensic expert, and criminal profiler Edmund Sweetheart, FBI consultant, are called in to investigate what is looking like murder. Their prime suspect is Dr. Christine Palmer, a brilliant scientist whose work with scientific think tanks around the world made her one of three scientists knowledgeable about exotic neurotoxins and their antidotes. What follows is a taut and terrifying investigation, in which Sylvia finds herself able to trust no one - but herself.

Download Description

"Sylvia Strange is back in a hair-raising chiller from the acclaimed author of Dantes' Inferno and Acquired Motives. A string of deaths in laboratories around the world has the scientific community on edge -- and the FBI on high alert. To the FBI, the circumstances surrounding the scientists' deaths spell the work of an unusually skilled serial poisoner, and they have zeroed in on a single suspect: the brilliant, beautiful Dr. Christine Palmer. A world-renowned toxicologist and leader of numerous international research teams, Palmer is one of only a handful of scientists with highly classified knowledge of the deadliest experimental neurotoxins and their antidotes. When a molecular toxicologist is poisoned while working at a top-secret research facility outside Santa Fe, Dr. Sylvia Strange and counterterrorism expert Edmond Sweetheart are recruited to assemble a psychological profile of Palmer in an effort to link her to the crimes. But as Sylvia's investigation of Palmer's charismatic persona draws her ever more strongly into the scientist's orbit, hunter and hunted become perilously intertwined. And when Sylvia discovers that her partner may be withholding crucial information, she no longer knows who can be trusted: is the killer friend or foe? Sylvia will risk everything she holds dear, only to learn that there is no safe haven from a voyeuristic killer whose weapon of choice may go undetected in the food you eat, the clothes you wear, or the air you breathe. "

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Failed Alchemy.......2003-06-09

This author seems to be on a downward trend. I have read all the books in this series. The first ones were enjoyable. The last one before this was disappointing. This is a dud. The story does not hang together. The plot is inadequate, parts of it are far fetched, and the ending does not work. She neglects the personal relationships which were interesting in the earlier books.

4 out of 5 stars A Nail-Biting Page Turner.......2003-06-07

The FBI needs the help of Sarah Lovett's most popular Forensic Psychologist, Dr. Sylvia Strange, in this latest psychological mystery. There has been a slew of unsolved deaths, all of which have been researchers in different labs all over the world.

The FBI suspects Dr. Christine Palmer and there is a lot of evidence. But nothing concrete.

The FBI seeks out the help of Dr. Strange and her expertise. Sylvia has enough on her mind with trying to plan her wedding and mend a few bumps in the relationship between her and her fiancé. But she also takes on this case to figure out how this beautiful, confident, world-renowned toxicologist is using neurotoxins to kill off others and how she has gotten away with it - until now.

Sylvia is on a mission to crack this case, get the evidence needed and get back to her wedding plans when another death occurs. She joins forces with counter-terrorism expert Edmond Sweetheart and they begin to link evidence together. But is Edmond on her side or is he withholding the evidence that could crack this case wide open for them?

Lovett uses a lot of forensic and scientific lingo heavily throughout the book. But the action page after page will still hold the readers attention till the very end with it's various plot twists.

This tale of the crazy serial poisoner, with a strong, heroic Dr. Strange hot on her tail, is a nail-biting page turner.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Strange investigates death by neurotoxin........2003-04-13

Dr. Sylvia Strange is about to marry the love of her life, Matt England, and she should be in a state of prenuptial bliss. Instead, Sylvia is goaded into taking one last case before her wedding. "Dark Alchemy" is the story of a serial killer who uses sophisticated neurotoxins to murder fellow scientists. The FBI suspects Dr. Christine Palmer, the world's foremost expert on these deadly poisons. Since all the evidence against Dr. Palmer is circumstantial, the authorities need more information to move the investigation forward.

Counterterrorism expert Edmond Sweetheart has been asked by the FBI to step in, and he in turn recruits Dr. Strange to help him construct a psychological profile of the killer. Sylvia would prefer to immerse herself in her wedding plans, but the case interests her and she decides to lend her expertise to the investigation.

The book starts out promisingly. Lovett piques the reader's interest with her arcane information on neurotoxins and their deadly effects. Dr. Palmer is an intriguing character. She is beautiful, brilliant and egotistical, but is she also a killer? To make matters more complicated, Sylvia's personal problems keep distracting her. Although she and Matt truly love one another, they still have some unresolved issues that may disrupt their wedding plans.

Unfortunately, after a strong opening, "Dark Alchemy" unravels in the second half of the book. Various suspects are dangled before the reader, and the plot becomes more and more illogical as the book progresses. The ending is rushed and the conclusion is unsatisfying. Had Lovett taken the time to develop her plot with more care, "Dark Alchemy" would have been a much better novel.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2003-04-02

I loved her first Dr. Strange books but have been disappointed in the last two. I thought the storyline was unrealistic and confusing. The end felt forced and and tied up to easily.
Sylvia's relationship issues were just brushed away. I felt this wasn't much of a mystery nor did it have any psychological insight or suspense.

5 out of 5 stars exhilarating, enthralling crime thriller.......2003-03-08

Her scientific peers consider Dr. Christine Palmer the world's foremost expert on neurotoxins. She knows how to make them and how to make antidotes for them. However, law enforcement officials believe that the beautiful, brilliant scientist is also a sociopath serial poisoner though no clear evidence proves the contention. Still Christine remains the prime suspect in the murders of her father, her fiancé and some of her co-workers.

Counterterrorist expert Edmond Sweetheart asks forensic psychologist Dr. Sylvia Strange to work up a profile of Dr. Christine Palmer so when the authorities bring her in for questioning, they will know how to interrogate this one-of-a kind woman. Sylvia agrees to a meeting with Dr. Palmer knowing she is being used as bait and walks away from the encounter a very sick person. Ironically, the only person who can help her is Dr. Palmer if she obtains what she wants from Sylvia.

There is much more to DARK ALCHEMY than a serial poisoner novel. The heroine's partner has his own agenda and is willing to sacrifice anyone including her to make sure a spy/mole doesn't get away with espionage. Sarah Lovett writes an exhilarating, enthralling crime thriller that will keep readers turning the pages until the end because it is not until the climax that the audience finds out whether Dr. Palmer is a sinister villain or a brilliant victim.

When Paganism and Gothic culture collide, a powerful blend of independent thought and magickal transformation is often the result. Raven Digitalis explores this dynamic intersection and what draws us to the dark side.

Digitalis introduces many kinds of Goths and Witches, and the philosophy of each. Practical as well as insightful, Goth Craft covers the basics of magick, with special attention to blood magick, death magick, and necromancy. You'll also learn how to channel dark emotions, express yourself through the dark arts (clothes, hair, makeup, body modification), choose appropriate Goth music for ritual, and myriad other ways to merge magickal practice with the Goth lifestyle.

From working shadow magick to spellcasting on the dance floor, Goth Craft revels in the exciting convergence of two vital subcultures.

"An insightful, honest, and spiritual exploration of the intersection of witchcraft and goth culture not only for those who have a foot in each of these worlds, but also for those explorers on one side, seeking to know the ways of the other." -Christopher Penczak, author of the Temple of Witchcraft series

    5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding!!!.......2007-10-04

Goth Craft is Spellbinding!!!! Loving Witchcraft and all it has to offer and dabbling in pieces of dark culture throughout life, Goth Craft nails all sides of the culture in intelligent, thought provoking ways. Raven takes you into both sides of dark culture, luring you in with all of the vivid detail. His knowledge base and insight into both the Craft and Goth are refreshing and down to earth and are delivered in a refreshing, conversational style.

Raven's summery of Witchcraft is breathtaking. No one I have read has described the essence of Witchcraft with such depth and reverence. To encompass the true being of Witchcraft in seven pages, without feeling as if the soul of it has bee left out is miraculous and well achieved. Raven is a true artist who lives and breathes the Craft and all the beauty that lies within and beneath.

Raven proves he has a true desire to teach, opening up a humanness and a true dedication and caring for the reader, by touching upon times when one finds the self in a graven place, the ways to pull oneself out of the darker realm, when those dark emotions may become too overwhelming or deep seeded. He also, encompasses the arenas of sexuality and gender, lending to his integrity. Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll are balanced in a respectful and truthful manner, engaging the reader in ways they can be incorporated, with dignity, into all sides of dark culture, including ritual.

Most touching for me is how Goth Craft challenges Withes out there who are fearful of walking the line between "White and Black" Witchcraft; reminding you that you can be a Dark "White" Witch, without ever having to touch the "Black" side (I apologize in advance for the reference to color that lends itself to the defining of good and evil in the Craft, the hope is for better global definitions in the future for this distinction). Society tends to try and connect Witchcraft with evil (nothing being further from the truth) leaving a lot of Witches trying to focus purely on the "safe" side of Witchcraft. Dark Craft embraces how and why being a Dark Witch is beautiful and that being a Dark Witch is having the guts to find the essence of ones true self, daring to dig deep enough within the heart and soul to truly uncover our darker emotions and layers, so that we can truly be One with the God and Goddess. Being Dark is being true to the ways of nature and the hidden portals of our soul.

In Goth Craft, Raven has brilliantly put the nail in the coffin and transcended dark culture through to the other side. A must read for anyone willing to embrace the beauty and tranquility of the dark side.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.......2007-09-21

When I first heard of this book, I was a little leary. Over the past few years, there has been a spike in interest in all things dark as it pertains to magick, and there are some books out there that seem to have been cranked out sheerly to fill that marketing need. Not so with Goth Craft. Raven is writing from the perspective of someone who loves both magick and the Gothic subculture. He is steeped in the music, the aesthetics, and the philosophies of Goth, and this clearly comes through in his treatment of the subject of how and where Goth intersects with magickal practice. The book is genuine and well-researched, with a wide range of information. The very visual presentation of the book is an added bonus, and it really serves to underscore the fact that Goth has a strong aesthetic component. If you've ever wondered what those somber, black-clad souls were doing at your Pagan Pride Day, this is the book to help you understand.

5 out of 5 stars A well thought out and entertaining introduction to the Wiccan or neo pagan side of goth culture........2007-09-11

What really Makes "Goth Craft" great is Raven's ability to share a great deal of information while at the same time keeping the text light and conversational in nature. Although I am not involved in either Wicca or neo paganism, I still found the book to be an interesting read. A good addition to the woefully small body of literature on gothic culture.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful first publication from a promising new author.......2007-08-22

This is one of those books that had the potential to be either really good, or abysmal. Fortunately, Raven managed to stick to the former, avoiding a trainwreck of trendiness and black-dyed fluff.

If you're unfamiliar with the Goth subculture beyond a few outward trappings, this book will give you a solid introduction to the whys, hows, and manifestations of what it is to be Goth. However, like the introductory material on witchcraft that he presents, Raven manages to avoid dogma and snarkiness. This will make Goth Craft a particularly good guide for teens and early twenty-somethings who are just getting into both the Goth subculture and witchcraft, though people who are more established in one community or the other shouldn't turn away, either.

What I really liked about this book was the fact that it doesn't shy away from potentially controversial material. The ritual use of drugs, sex (vanilla and otherwise) and gender issues are some of the topics that are covered in a respectful, intelligent manner. Raven also includes a good collection of rituals and spells aimed at the appreciation of the darker end of the spectrum of life, and provides some refreshing ideas to work with. He also shows the magic in "everyday" elements of Gothic culture, including conscious application of makeup and clothing, and the use of dance for reaching altered states of consciousness.

I would consider Goth Craft to be primarily 101 level material, but it's on the higher end of 101-there are explanations of common pagan symbols and correspondences filtered through a Gothic worldview, but there's also a good collection of further resources. And I learned quite a bit about the Gothic subculture that I hadn't known before. So while the target audience seems to be younger folks in the Goth community who are interested in witchcraft, I suggest giving this book a chance if you're interested in a darker approach to magic that is well beyond the ooga-booga spookiness and sensationalism that some prior texts have fallen prey to.
