Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and other Sea Monsters.......2007-10-03
Absolutely gorgeous and intriguing pop-ups. Good information about the sharks and sea monsters. I love all things by Robert Sabuda. Good for kids 4 and older.
Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters.......2007-08-25
This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!
Excellent pop up book, reading is complicated.......2007-08-16
Cool book. Reading is over the age category of my daughters, but they simply enjoy the pop ups.
Absolutely amazing!!!.......2007-08-13
This book is unbelievable! The attention to detail is fantastic. Absolute value for money and a must for any child who is as taken with sharks dinosaurs as my son is.
Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Sharks and Other Sea Monsters.......2007-08-12
Robert Sabuda always does a fantastic job and this is just another example of an exciting, educational pop-up book.

Definitely best price.......2007-04-02
No idea how it was done, but I got it 75% less price with amazon that with any other vendor, perfect condition, my son loved it, he just goes literally everywhere with them.
Complete covers everything.......2007-03-22
These books cover everything from scientific names to places. It is heavey on bigfoots from around the world and overlaps some on them but all in all a good read if your into the science part of cryptozoology. There are stories in the book about sightings but this is not a pure sightings book it is more about cataloging the cryptids.
Phenomenal 2 Volume Set!.......2004-10-17
Finally! A long overdue authoritative encyclopedia of cryptozoology! This set is awesome! There is so much information here that it'll take a veeery long time to digest it all.
I do have several suggestions though:
1) More photos and illustrations (especially photos and stills from film footage which are discussed, but not shown).
2) Dustjackets. The covers are gorgeous, but how long will they remain so without dustjackets? And at this price, you'd think the publisher could afford it. Which brings me to...
3) The price is outrageous. How can the publisher make any money by limiting it's buyers to libraries, rich people and fools like me? $60 sure, even $75, but $185? Jeez! And even though I paid WAY less than that for my set, it still almost killed by bank account.
Even so, I'm glad I bought it and wouldn't be without it.
A Very Intersting Ecylcopedia.......2004-10-16
I accidently stumbled upon this item while looking for anything on the Paranormal. The Book seemed very intersting and I bought it. The Price was a Killer, but it was worth it. It is set in 2 voulumes which is more like an Encyclopedia, but in the Final Sections of Volume Two mainly is Reference to all the New Species discovered in the 20th Century. Also in the real Final pages, are all Lakes that supposedly have Monsters in them like Lake Erie or Lake Champlain. I would recommend this Book for Reference, but not for reading from Start because like I said, it is more like an Encyclopedia than a Non Fiction Novel.
A collection of animals reported to exist at some point.......2004-09-25
This two-volume set is a basic layman's guide to the weird, wonderful world of unknown animals. These are animals whose existence has not been proven at this time. While the idea that there may be animals, including some very large ones, living in the world and we have no proof of their existence might be strange to some people it was during my lifetime that gorillas and rhinoceroses were removed from the category of fables.
For each entry the editors provide information on its physical description, behavior, distribution, possible explanations, significant sightings, and sources. This is a non-judgmental review of the reports from around the world presented in a typical encyclopedic style. Although it contains primarily creatures reported to exist but not proven it also includes some animals like the Dodo bird, which were known to exist and are believed extinct. But, because there have been occasional reported sightings in recent years these animals are included.
ABC-CLIO, Inc. published some of the best educational materials of this type on the market today. As always Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology is a high quality reference work written at a high-school level and so is accessible to everyone. Mysterious Creatures is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in this area and a recommended purchase for libraries.

Book Description
The ultimate quest for the world's most mysterious creatures
The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman -- these are the names of the elusive beasts that have caught the eye and captured the imaginations of people around the world for centuries. Recently, tales of these "monsters" have been corroborated by an increase in sightings, and out of these legends a new science has been born: cryptozoology -- the study of hidden animals.
Cryptozoology A to Z, the first encyclopedia of its kind, contains nearly two hundred entries, including cryptids (the name given to these unusual beasts), new animal finds, and the explorers and scientists who search for them. Loren Coleman, one of the world's leading cryptozoologists, teams up with Jerome Clark, editor and author of several encyclopedias, to provide these definitive descriptions and many never-before-published drawings and photographs from eyewitnesses' detailed accounts. Full of insights into the methods of these scientists, exciting tales of discovery, and the history and evolution of this field, Cryptozoology A to Z is the most complete reference ever of the newest zoological science.
Customer Reviews:
Not enough Creatures - too many creature hunter bios.......2007-08-17
For the price it's OK - but half the books entries are bios of people involved in creature hunting and there is a huge number of cross-over entries that are Bigfoot-Yeti type creatures just under different names unique to their cultures. So only about 1/3 of the book, at best, is actually unique creatures to read about. The rest is bios and fairly redundant text on similar creatures under different names. It's only because of the affordable price that I gave it 3 stars instead of 2.
Excellent and entertaining!.......2007-06-12
I have had this book for a while and just recently had to buy another copy because the original one I had was so beat up and well used that it finally fell apart!
Mr. Coleman and Mr. Clark have outdone themselves. The information in this compilation of Cryptids and those that hunt them is exquisite. Though they left out some people and Cryptids the ones they included are well thought out and reserched and give enough info on the others for people to do thier own reserch if they want.
I absolutely loved it and the fact that it is written in an easy to get lexicon is a plus!
I can't wait for the next compilation from these two authors!
A great collection of cryptozoological oddities..........2007-05-24
This book is a fantastic addition to any researcher of strange creatures, paranormal phenomena, and bizzare mysteries.
Not the book that I thought it would be.......2006-10-06
This book was extremely disappointing. A great volume of the book was filled with details about individuals who have an interest in cryptozoology. Perhaps three names belonged in the book, if even that. Some of these people do not belong in a cryptozoology book any more than I do. Take away the sections on people pursuing bigfoot and other oddities and you are left with a scant book. I have enjoyed the author's books in the past, but this book fell short.
Informative and a very good start off point for those interested in cryptozoology.......2006-08-04
Loren Coleman and Jerome Clark's book, Cryptozoology A to Z is a very informative encyclopedia that clearly and simply states the facts about the cryptids (animals of interest to cryptozoologists) and those who investigate and study such animals. There's other books that deal in much ore detail about specific cryptids, but for those whose interest in the subject of cryptozoology is still in the basic stage will find this book helpful in starting them out on a very interesting and fun hobby or calling.
Book Description
We have always conjured up creatures never seen in nature, from flying horses and two-headed birds to fire-breathing dragons and enormous killer skunks, as well as fantastic distortions of our own image, from giants to nubile maidens. In these pages you will meet extraordinary beings from Hindu and Navajo religions, Scandinavian tales, Russian folklore, Lithuanian stories, Irish oral history, American tall tales, and Aztec myth. Just some of the monstrous entourage:
Baku, a benevolent Japanese monster with the body of a horse, the head of a lion, and the legs of a tiger, who helps people by devouring their nightmares.
Kurma, the giant tortoise of Hindu myth, whose upper shell forms the heavens and lower part the earth.
Missipissy, the feared fish serpent of North America's Great Lakes region.
This illustrated encyclopedia not only identifies and describes individual beasts in their cultural context but also groups them together across cultures and discusses common mythological strands and conceits. 60 b/w illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A very concise source of information........2007-09-14
I was surprised with the extensive amount of listings within the book. There is a lot of otherwise hard to find information. I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for one thing; there is no index. A book like this should really contain an index for those looking for particular traits, or words within a creature's definition. However there are listings in the back based on different characteristics it is not as exhaustive or all around helpful as a simple index would be. Don't get me wrong though, this book is still well worth the purchase. Besides you can search through the book for keywords on this webpage by clicking "Search Inside".
Monsters.......2007-02-22
I was really pleased with this book. You could get lost for hours just reading about each creature. I would reccommend this book to any person who likes to read about monsters.
Fun -and- educational........2006-10-06
This is one for both the scholar who needs a quick reference and the casual enthusiast looking to impress friends with mythical trivia (not that many people have friends who are so easily impressed).
If you have any interest, academic or casual, in the mythical beasts of yore, I highly recommend Rose's encyclopedias (this, and the "sequel," which contains more benign beings). It's fascinating to see icons from ancient Mesopotamian myth, Japanese legend, Native American religion and contemporary American folklore all on the same page.
In addition to thorough explanations of the origins and significance of each beastie, Rose goes one step further by explaining parallels to other cultural icons, common heritages and even manifestations in modern popular culture (for instance, there are numerous entries about creatures from J.R.R. Tolkien's world, which, while not strictly mythical themselves, do draw their inspiration from real-world mythology).
There are a number of similar cyclopedic works available, but this one differs from the masses in that it is both thoroughly academic (unlike many of the recent pop-culture anthologies), -and- thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.
very nice.......2006-03-02
As others have mentioned, this book is an encyclopedia and as such contains mostly facts. The stories and legends mentioned in the book are briefly surmised. The pictures are all in black and white. Most beings mentioned in the book are not pictured. Having no other similar book to compare this to, I'd say it's pretty complete. I've never heard of most of the creatures listed. I did find a few beings missing that I think are important and sometimes there are multiple entries for the same subject, under different and sometimes very similar names.
This book would be useful as a reference for a research paper and is a nice addition to anyone's library.
A Very Good Encyclopedia.......2005-12-12
Carol Rose has produced an amazing book with loads of fun information, however, it is an encyclopedia as it says. Although very helpful, it can be a tedious read at times.

Customer Reviews:
An average rehashing of what has already been done.......2005-06-04
If you are looking for a "cliff notes" version of the vampire myth, then this is a pretty simple, easy to use book. For those just developing an interest in vampire legend and lore, it will offer a very general overview of the nature of the vampire legacy. However, true students of vampirism will quickly bore of this book, as it doesn't really offer anything new or groundbreaking. In fact, with a careful Google search, you can probably find the same info for free on the internet.
the handbook for the newbies.......2004-12-29
if you are new to the world of vampyrism and vampyres, this is the perfect book for you. it is sleek and thin, but it has enough information compressed in it to keep you awake. this book is the gateway that will lead you to search for more vampiric texts. from this book, you can search as if it were a database of the most basic information. it's nothing too intense, you can't go vampire hunting with it, but it will make you a better deciple and apprentice.
A Not So Detailed Guide..........2004-09-02
I have read this book from cover to cover, and while it does give a brief explanation of quite a few things vampire related, it is far from complete. This is a bore to read through although it is a somewhat handy vampire reference guide. If you are looking for minimal detail This would be the guide for you.
If you are looking for something more in depth, I would suggest the Vampire Book. It has many more entries and although it is quite thick, is very enjoyable to read. Not to mention it has more knowledge about vampires than you could ever ask for [in one place].
A Good Place To Start........2004-06-18
"The Vampire Encyclopedia" by Matthew Bunson is a good place to start with if you know little to nothing on vampires. I have been researching for over four years on vampires, so I really didn't find anything in here that I didn't all ready know.
A Good Guide.......2002-09-03
This is a must have for Vampire fans, be they cultural, literary, historical, or film vampires. This book isn't a one stop book on vampire, but it's a good reference. It covers different kind of vampires in different culture, historical vampires, literary vampires (up to 1993), and vampires on film. This book doesn't even need to be for reference, I read it cover to cover.
Book Description
Presents 100 gripping case studies of the worst killers of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overall Info - If You Are Into Gore (2 1/2 *).......2006-11-20
And I'm not. There are many murderers listed in this book, in apparently no kind of order, so if you're looking for a specific one, take your time. Most of these are the gory killers, whose sadism and senseless torture of their victims (humans and animals alike) would make me ill if I read it, so I skipped those parts, which left me with not much to read.
I will have to take the word of previous reviewers who noted errors in the stories, since I'm not very familiar with the serial/torture killer type. I did notice that Mr. Everitt mentioned that Charles Whitman wrote a note requesting an autopsy before he went on his shooting spree in the tower at the University of Texas, but the author fails to mention that one was done afterward, and a large tumor was found in his brain. Just so you know.
Death by Sledge Hammer- The Bender Family!.......2006-07-15
The segment on the Bender family is fascinating. Luring travelers to their country home for dinner and a night's board, and Wham! Don't sit with your back to a sheet room-divider is the moral I guess. The chapter on Sawney Beane is just as great. Inbred Scottish cannibals living in a cave, where the only entrance is concealed by water due to the tide most of the day. Why isn't this story a movie?
agree w/ the warning from the swedish reviewer!!!.......2002-09-28
i wish i had seen that guy from swedens review before i bought that book.. i must agree with him.. from the first page i was reading incorrect information.. i will be returning this book for sure. i was all excited to get the book and when i saw incorrect information in first page, i went to the part about dahmer (about whom i have read a lot of books) and the info there was not consistant w/other books on him. i would like to know where they got some of their information for this book. it reminds me of another bad book 'cannibal killers' by moira martingale. if you want to read a really decent, accurate book... read a book by john douglas or robert ressler!!!
just the way I like 'em.......2000-03-01
This book is a quick-reference book for the numerous serial killers that have roamed the land since the 1800s. This book starts with those who thought they were werewolves (feasting on children), to those who believed they were cannibals and breeded with each other, to the notorious Speck, Killer Clown and Dahmer. There are a few pages dedicated to each killer, complete with an easy-reference index. Only the most gruesome details are highlighted.
IX-NAY ON THE ARNING-WAY!!! EAD-RAY T-IAY OW-NAY!!.......1999-02-08
This book is....how do you say? Ah yes, VERY...VERY FASCINATING. Just a little forewarning; this book does not contain any stories about "Joey, the Slob Drunk Husband" shooting "Martha, the Lazy Housewife" in the can over a simple domestic dispute over a sink-full of dirty dishes, or an empty dinner plate after a hard days work at the toaster factory. This Encycopedia is chock-full-o' historical facts and information, and is a very informative timeline of the history of the worlds known psychopaths, cannibals, necrophiles, serial killers, murderers, and mass murderers. Oh yeah, I forgot, the "National Enquirer" hasn't been established long enough to make up a story about "Seaney Beane" (sp?, don't have the book with me) or the "Bloody Benders", and I seriously doubt their writers would ever be creative enough to conjure up any stories like that, or any of the others for that matter. Please readers, READ THIS BOOK. It will really make you think....
Customer Reviews:
What Other Monsters?.......2006-01-12
For me, this encyclopedia has a misleading title in that most of the entries deal with vampires or vampire-like creatures. There is some material on werewolves & other shapeshifters and skinwalkers, but I found myself wondering where those 'Other Monsters' were. The author dedicated several pages to the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' television series and the author Anne Rice while only giving a nod to classics such as 'Carmilla' and not even a mention of the 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' - and the only mention of Dr. Frankenstein or his monster is an entry for 'Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman'. There are also entries for Dion Fortune and Aleister Crowley - people who may have been involved in the occult but who were hardly monsters. Noticeably absent, especially in the presence of vampire and monster -portraying actors, is Vincent Price. Overall, I can only recommend this book in good conscience if you're a vampire fan. Otherwise, it will only disappoint.
Fantastic- A Review By Mary Sanders.......2005-08-08
This is a great encyclopedia for those interested in vampire and werewolves. Not only does this book describe them in lore, but in films, so this book is also great for those who like horror movies. I love horror, and own many, many, books on the supernatural. This is one of my favorites. It's very discriptive and well-written. Plus 17 dollars isn't much to spend. Buy it! You won't regret it!

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LEGENDARY CREATURES REVIEW
This was a great book. It tells about monsters and the people who were afraid of them. My favorite monster was Bay-kok, a Native American story. This is a good book to read for school or just for fun. If you see a copy at a bookstore, buy it. You will love it. This is one of my favorite books. Everyone that I have shown it to has loved it too! I have liked this book since I was seven years old and have checked it out from the library five or six times in the last three years. It is a good book to read.
Great Book.......2001-06-28
A great book It has iformation on both mythilogical creatures and more modern creatures such as The Loch Ness Monster. One year I checked it out from my schools libary for almost the whole year. When my time expired I checked it out again and again. My sister also liked it to. One time I was going to check it out but I couldn't someone else had it. I asked if I could be put on a waiting list for but as it turned out my sister had checked it out.
Book Description
What lurks out there in the fog?
What was that eerie sound in the dead of night?
What flitted by at the end of the street, just beyond the farthest street lamp?
From earliest times, tales of the restless dead and their fellow travelers have terrified mankind. Whether around a remote campfire or in the middle of a bustling city, the unquiet spirits and attendant creatures that have tormented humanity since the prehistoric darkness haven't gone away - they still have the power to strike fear in our hearts.
Encyclopedia of the Undead traces those shadowy entities - vampires, werewolves, ghouls and monsters - that lurk just outside the range of human vision and inhabit our most frightening tales. Drawing on a wide range of beliefs and literature, it traces these horrors from their earliest recorded inceptions and charts their impact upon the human psyche. In this book, history and terror mix to create the things that lurk in the darkest corners of our minds.
You'll find detailed descriptions of terrors from all over the world - from the mist-shrouded mountains of Eastern Europe to the sweltering jungles of the Caribbean islands, from the dark, stone-lined tombs of the uncoffined dead beneath the remote New England hills to the dark magics that lurk beneath the thriving, colorful surface of a city like New Orleans. In addition to the more conventional creatures, Encyclopedia of the Undead also details some of the more obscure Things that gnaw at the edges of men's minds - Incubi and Succubi, the Mara, and the dark legends that have influenced writers from Sheridan Le Fanu to H.P. Lovecraft.
This is a book for all those who are interested in the darker side of the human mind - the side that examines and even embraces those beliefs and imaginings that form the basis of our most archetypical fears. This is the book for those brave enough to plumb the depths of our worst nightmares!
Dr. Bob Curran lives and works in the North of Ireland, a place that is haunted by myth, legend and folktales. Over the years, he has studied the dark and sinister, both in his own land and in places beyond. A psychologist and a historian, he has written and lectured extensively on the arcane and the mysterious. He is the author of Vampires and Celtic Lore & Legend (both from New Page Books).

A TREASURE TROVE OF MYTH AND LEGEND.......2006-09-15
Vampires, werewolves, and other things that go bump in the night are the subject of Dr. Bob Curran's "Encyclopedia of the Undead". In this riveting book of myth, folklore, and fact, Curran looks at the history and mystery of these creatures from their earliest mentions in ancient texts right up through modern day. It's fresh and fascinating, a monster lover's dream!
The book begins with the ultimate creatures of the night...vampires! Legends of vampires and vampirism have been around since men first wrote on papyrus thousands of years ago. Ancient Greek mythology abounds with vampiric creatures such as the Lamia, Succubi while Sumeria wrought its tales of Lilith, supposedly the first wife of Adam who spawned many demons called the Lilm. Even if you think you know a lot about vampires, Curran will surprise you with the many tales of vampires throughout history who have plagued mankind. But the tales are not all legend. There are many modern accounts from the past couple of centuries about reputed vampires, or medical afflictions, which were deemed to be vampiric by the peoples of the times. No account of vampires would be complete without a look at two of the most notorious figures from Eastern Europe, Vlad Tepes and Elizabeth Bathory, and Curran covers both figures in detail.
Next up are similar chapters on Werewolves, Voodoo and Zombies, and Ghouls and the Golem. Most of the section on Zombies and Voodoo focuses on those grisly legends of Africa, the Caribbean, and New Orleans. The reader will get up close and personal with several notorious voodoo priests and voodoo queens. You've perhaps heard of one of the most famous of New Orleans' voodoo queens, Marie Laveau, but did you know there actually three Marie Laveaus? You'll get to meet all three...and maybe wish you hadn't!
The last chapter of the book deals with the terrors of H.P. Lovecraft and while I am a Lovecraft fan, the inclusion of his works is slightly curious. While Lovecraft did have his tales of the undead, many of his creations were decidedly NOT dead. Still, it's the inclusion of the Lovecraft chapter makes for a great primer for those who may be unfamiliar with his life and work. Curran provides a biographical overview of Lovecraft's troubled life before delving into his mind-ripping creations such as the Cthulhu Mythos with its tales of Old Ones and Elder Gods, ancient civilizations, and books of forbidden lore that could drive men to madness if they read them. In fact, the Lovecraft chapter ends up being the longest in the book although Lovecraft fanatics will certainly be familiar with most of what's covered.
The Encyclopedia of the Undead is one of those books you just love to pick up and flip through in no particular order. It has broad appeal to those who are interested in myth and folklore, monster films, role-playing games, and horror fiction. Curran does a great job pulling it all together!
