5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2007-06-08

I have found the DSM-IV-TR TM in Action to be a welcome adjunct to the DSM that is chock full of information. The sample treatment plans provide practical and useful guidelines and the quick reference sections make this book very user-friendly. I am sure I will use this guide for years to come. It is well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars DSM IV TX In Action is a wonderful resourcs.......2006-12-22

This book was written in 2002 but it continues to be an excellent resource today. Its focus is on the DSM IV TR and the text is "user friendly" and easy to understand. It provides an excellent starting ground in terms of treatment planning for both seasoned and beginning clinicians. I have been especially impressed with the language that is used and the tools the book makes available, such as the Daily Body Satisfaction Log in the Eating Disorders Chapter. I have used this book as a private practitioner, and as an educator, and feel that it is one of the best publications on the DSM that has come out. I recommend it for clinicians and students alike, it is "worth the read".

1 out of 5 stars Fringe Therapy for Reactive Attachment Disorder.......2006-12-08

Children with real Reactive Attachment Disorder have come from environments where they struggled to survive. Now, parents and therapists following Forbes and Dziegielewski's advice would put these children through more horrific abuse, using "Attachment Therapy" (aka Holding Therapy, Compression Therapy, Welch Method Direct Synchronous Bonding, etc). The authors dismiss all conventional therapy and opt for the fringe -- "the application of the concepts of attachment therapy is recommended" -- while admitting the lack of empirical research to justify the use of these extreme measures. The authors, amazingly, spell out those extreme and unethical measures used in Attachment Therapy, e.g. take the child out of school and isolate him with mom; use "Holding Therapy" to force the child into catharsis. They think of the child as a bottle -- you have to get rid of the rage before love can come in. [Note that the DSM-IV description of RAD does NOT include any rageful or aggressive behaviors.] That goes for mom and rest of the family, as well. Yes, mom gets to yell out her anger at the child during Holding Therapy. The authors admit: "If one were to watch a therapeutic hold for the first time, without an understanding behind the technique, he or she might perceive it to be abusive or coercive." That's especially true of the Holding sessions involving older children where the authors suggest parents actually lying on top of the child. (And in family therapy, "with the husband physically on top of the mother.") This is caveman therapy! Nothing short of physical, emotion and probably sexual abuse. People using this therapy could, in many ways, lose their children.

wow! i never thought i'd live to see the day that i read what boils down to a text book with delight. dziegielewski is straight forward, to the point and plain speaking. this book has been the most helpful of mental health diagnosis aids for practicum students at the agency i work for. it truly ought to be a required text for grad students going into the mental health delivery business! lots of little prompts and reminders throughout the text make it an easy read!

5 out of 5 stars The method behind the madness!.......2002-10-31

Play on words notwithstanding, Dr. Dziegielewski's book provides valuable insight into the "mindset" of the DSM-IV-TR.

She presents a balanced approach and practicl guide to in-depth applications of diagnostice and therapeutic consideraations for a number of issues found in the DSM-Iv-TR.

Dr. D is an expert in this field, frequently holding workshops on how to use the DSM. This book is thorough, logical, practical, and necessary. For even though one may have philosophical differences w/the DSM (and Dr. D addresses these in her book), the DSM is still the "tool of choice" for mental health professionals for diagnosis, assessing, and treating clients.

5 out of 5 stars Great veterinary resource, NOT for pet owners.......2004-05-26

I love my nerdbook; I'm not on clinics yet but I use it to work through mock cases and as a review tool. It contains the basics for working up common problems and is a concise resource for simple questions. I am troubled by the review by a pet owner, though. This is not at all designed as a first aid for pets book and is written for an audience with much more understanding of animal health and medicine than even an educated pet owner. It's dangerous to think you know more than you do and can result in not seeking trained medical care when it is warranted. So, while it is great for vet students and interns it is not for pet owners. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent pocketguide for interns/students.......2002-05-28

This is an excellent pocket guide for final year students or interns in small animal hospitals. It covers not only internal medicine but orthopedics as well. Despite minor errors, it is still the best there is. It is used in veterinary teaching hospitals all over the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MEDICAL REFERENCE FOR PET OWNERS.......1999-04-02

I'm sure this book is a godsend to veterinary students. But I'm not a veterinary student, I use it to learn about and understand possible problems, their symptoms and treatment, so that I can be more vigilant with my pets, and have a better conversation with my veterinarian. Yes, it's more challenging to the understanding of the average pet owner, but it's far more authoritative than the average "first aid for your pet" book.

Sophia Loren is more than a beloved movie star--she's a cook. The author of two personal cookbooks, she's been recognized by the Italian government for her culinary prowess. In Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories, she offers a hundred or so recipes arranged by course--antipasti through desserts. With a like number of photos, most in color, and all sorts of Sophia memorabilia--a shot of the 16-year-old Sophia shows us just how early Sophia was Sophia--the large-format book is also filled with reminiscences of family, home, and work. Cooks shouldn't be disappointed, though. Sophia's recipes, taken from all over Italy as well as her table, include pizzas and risottos, hearty soups, savory fish dishes, and simple but satisfying sweets. The repertoire is basic but tempting; Sophia's Saltimbocca, for example, is the familiar dish yet again, but there are a few original and "undiscovered" dishes, such as Eggplant Cooked in the Manner of Mushrooms. Standout dishes include a lovely herb-perfumed lamb stew from Naples and a sweet-savory rice dish made with turkey, chestnuts, and dried fruit. The recipes are models of clarity, and Sophia's introductory notes and other asides leave no doubt that the author is a serious, passionate cook. Reading her book and trying her recipes, we come to applaud the star in her apron as well as on the screen. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful simple Italian recipes!.......2006-03-16

When I was in my early twenties I enjoyed cooking Italian dishes with my grandmother every Tuesday. My grandmother is a true Italian woman, raised in New York and believes a family should eat a homemade meal every night. She gave me this book as she thought it was a suberb Italian cookbook. I couldn't agree more. As a young person, this is a great book because the receipes are not too comlicated, as common Italian dishes and taste delicious! Almost every recipe has a color photo too. My favorite recipes in the book are: Bucatini alla Carbonara, Spaghetti al Limone and the lentil soup.

5 out of 5 stars A Delicious, Heart-warming Book!.......2005-03-15

"Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories" is a book to be treasured, read and re-read, for its charming insight into the life and times of one of the world's great actresses, and for its wonderful, traditional Italian recipes, laced with more than a little spice-of-life.

Buy two of them! One for you to savor, one for a special gift for a favorite person in your life. I read this photo-filled book cover-to-cover the minute it arrived, and then enthusiastically ordered a second copy for my favorite cook, my son, the pastry chef. The first sentence in this memoir is "According to an old adage, the best condiment for any food is hunger." This book will make you passionately hungry for the best of Italian cooking, and it will inform you in the lovliest way possible, about old-world Italian kitchen traditions, not to mention a fascinating vision of Ms. Loren's life in film.

5 out of 5 stars BookIdeas.com Book Reviewer Marie Jones says:.......2005-03-07

More than just a collection of family recipes, "Sophia Loren's Recipes and Memories" is a sumptuous and often intimate journey into the life of one of the world's classiest and most admired and loved movie stars. The 100 traditional and improvised recipes are accompanied by insightful anecdotes about the movie business, acting, family life, the art of cooking, and growing up in her home country of Italy, with gorgeous photographs that bring Ms. Loren's passion for her past, and her present, to glorious life.

With such a legendary acting career to her credit, Ms. Loren has met and worked with many of the greats in the business, and she talks about her behind-the-scenes experiences, peppered throughout the book in between the real highlights, the recipes themselves. Many come from long-standing family traditions passed down from generation to generation, but many are also more modern, improvised takes on Italian dishes that Ms. Loren discovered on various locations of her many movies, or created herself from her vast knowledge of the culinary arts (this is not her first cookbook!).

The photographs by Alison Harris chronicle the evolution of both Ms. Loren's long and illustrious career, and her home life in Italy and abroad, with lush and colorful glimpses into a life centered around the pleasures of home and the family kitchen, as well as behind the camera. That Ms. Loren loves food is obvious in this beautiful, coffee-table style cookbook. That she loves life is even more so.

5 out of 5 stars simple recipes emotional depth.......2005-01-19

I love cooking the recipes in this book because they require few ingredients and cook with little preparation. The rustic simplicity of these recipes resonates very well with her childhood and adolescent memories. You get the feeling that the poverty that she endured in her youth has now tempered to only warm memories with time, but you can still read the hunger and deprivation between the lines. She is so gracious! You really feel as if she is handing you her family recipes. I was never a big fan of hers(too young to enjoy her movies) but I appreciate her so much more--she reveals so much if you read between the lines. One of my favorite recipes is spaghetti with lemon. I didn't have any cream so I used butter instead. Came out great. Took absolutely no time to prepare.

5 out of 5 stars Great Authentic Italian Meals!.......2003-08-27

As an Italian-born woman I found the receipes in this cookbook to actually be very authentically Italian and delicious. Not sure I buy the fact that Loren makes these dishes, but whoever cooked them up did a great job! Buon Appetito!

4 out of 5 stars Another outstanding, lush, hot romance from the diva!.......2007-08-08

Lisa makes her hero, Sir Ross Cannon, the head of the Bow Street Runners. How cool is that? A hard, relentless, untiring, unstoppable, `unfeeling' machine of a man, Ross was widowed when his wife died in agonizing childbirth. Along comes Sophia, wanting employment, when her hidden agenda is to seduce Ross and bring him to ruin. Sophia's brother was imprisoned as a youth when Ross was his magistrate, and died from cholera in one of the rotting hulks on the Thames during his incarceration. Sophia is burning for revenge. However, this gets a bit weak when Ross, long deprived of any tenderness, allows himself to succumb not only to Sophia's seduction tactics, but he also becomes the predator in their relationship. How will Ross react when he discovers Sophia's true agenda? Also, there's a very interesting story surrounding Nick Gentry, a criminal type underworld character who makes a huge difference to Sophia and Ross's relationship: excellent blackmail material!

5 out of 5 stars Great Author, Great Romance.......2007-05-08

So often vengeance themed romance can fall into formulaic plots. Not so with Lady Sophia's Lover. Sophia is determined to seek revenge on behalf of her brother. The object of her steely determination is Sir Ross Cannon, chief of the Bow Street Runners.

Sophia, an impoverished viscount's daughter, discovers that Sir Ross was the judge who condemned her brother John to an early death on a penal ship.

To carry out her plan to discredit and destroy him publicly she becomes indispensable to him as a secretary. She moves into his home and looks for possible incriminating and embarrassing evidence against him. However, she can find none as Sir Ross is as he seems, forthright, noble and honest.

Sir Ross is a widower and quite intrigued by Sophia. He is instantly attracted to her. Furthermore, he can tell she is attracted to him.

As Sophia spends more time with her employer, she releases the years of bitterness and allows herself to view Sir Ross with new eyes. What she sees is someone brave and a protector of the downtrodden.

However, she has so many secrets she does not believe that he can forgive her. Just when one secret is revealed another one takes its place.

Both these characters have great depth. Kleypas weaves their romance throughout the entire plot. The tension never waned and I was rooting for them on every page. The love Sophia has for her family and Sir Ross is fierce. Sir Ross is unapologetic about his desire for her. Sophia is no coy miss. She accepts and delights in Sir Ross's advances even when she is uncertain of her own feelings of revenge.

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Kleypas.......2007-05-07

I can't say it enough. I love this author! So glad these books are mostly connected. I like every character she brings in.

5 out of 5 stars Plot and Characters That Shine!.......2007-04-28

Lisa Kleypas is a magnificent writer with a way of making every story--both plot and characters--shine.

We immediately care for Lady Sophia as she worms her way into the notoriously upright (and celebate) Sir Ross Cannon's household. Becoming his secretary/personal assistant and household manager, her secret mission is to uncover some dirt on Ross, London's famous and powerful Chief Magistrate of Bow Street (the mid 1800's equivalent of the Police Chief), so that she can destroy him. Believing that Ross is responsible for her brother's death, Sophia is determined not only to raid his records but also to break his heart by making him fall in love with her, seducing him, and then abandoning him while publicizing their scandalous relationship.

However, Ross turns out not to be the sort of man Sophia envisioned at all. He is truly kind, just, and full of integrity--not to mention full of a great passion for her that only a will as strong as his could keep in check. As Sophia tries in vain to keep her heart safe, numerous entertaining plot twists keep the reader guessing while we watch the complex and delightful relationship between Sophia and Ross unfold.

Lady Sophia's Lover is a fun, moving, and ultimately uplifting rollercoaster ride that any fan of historical romance will tremendously enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars I see only vague similarities..........2007-09-08

This book consists of two parts: the "story" (actually more of a rough outline of an undeveloped story) and a listing of "evidence" that the creators of the Terminator and Matrix series plagiarized the book in creating their works. My view on the story portion first, as the "evidence" portion is by far the majority of the book and takes longer to review:

The basic premise is that the majority of humanity has been enslaved by an alien. A prophecy states that a savior, the chosen one, will come with divine powers to free humanity. The book is *very* short, and is obviously unfinished, a fact the author does not deny (although calling an obviously incomplete rough draft her "masterpiece" seems a bit misleading to me). The story, such as it is, is fairly interesting, and there some fairly good metaphors and philosophical leanings in it. All in all, as it stands now it's not very good. If the author finished it, it might be a fantastic story. Or it might suck. "The devil is in the details," as they say, and the true test of an author is not whether they can come up with an interesting backbone to their story; it's whether they can flesh it out with interesting, compelling characters and events that draw you in that determines whether a story is good or not. However, considering that this story has been in an unfinished state for 26 years, it seems unlikely Ms. Stewart will ever finish it.

The majority of the book consists of the author trying to prove plagiarism on the part of the creators of "The Terminator" and "The Matrix." There are copies of receipts, correspondence, and various legal documents detailing her copyright dates, court cases, etc. While I don't doubt that Ms. Stewart is telling the truth about when she wrote her story, what she fails to do is show conclusive, direct connections between her ideas and those of the two movie series.

Most of the similarities I see between "The Third Eye" and the Terminator/Matrix series are superficial, and not indicative of plagiarism. One such example is the prophecy of the coming of a savior with superhuman powers to free an enslaved humanity. I've read many books with this basic premise, and like the Matrix and Terminator movies, most had little to nothing in common with this book. Some predate it (not terribly difficult as it remained unpublished until 2006) and many predate the original copyright date of 1981.

Should Ms. Stewart win her suit against the creators of the Terminator and the Matrix, I'm interested to see if George Lucas sues her to collect his fair share. After all, Star Wars was written in 1974 and released in 1977, two years before she wrote this and four years before she copyrighted it. It has a prophecy of a savior (someone will come to bring balance to the Force) with superhuman powers (Jedi Force Push, anyone?) who, after adolescence, experiences a "spiritual awakening" in response to a stressful situation, which unleashes his latent powers. He then fights against the oppressors (the evil Empire) to free enslaved humanity. Of course, if Lucas wins his case, God might need to bring a civil suit against him because, after all, this is the basic premise of the New Testament story as well.

Most of the similarities Ms. Stewart claims are constructs common to nearly every epic story. There's a powerful entity who's enslaved most of humanity. Nearly every epic story has an evil robot/alien/really bad guy who's enslaved, or trying to enslave, an entire population, whether that population be a tribe, a country, a planet, or a galaxy. That's what makes the story *EPIC*. Nobody wants to watch a six hour series on the trials and tribulations of our intrepid hero's trip to the corner store to buy a diet coke. There's a "spiritual awakening", which either gives the hero some insight or knowledge about himself and his quest, or grants him new power and abilities. This is called the "hero's journey", and it's common to thousands of stories. From Wikipedia:

"In the monomyth, the hero starts in the ordinary world, and receives a call to enter an unusual world of strange powers and events. If the hero accepts the call to enter this strange world, the hero must face tasks and trials, and may have to face these trials alone, or may have assistance. At its most intense, the hero must survive a severe challenge, often with help earned along the journey. If the hero survives, the hero may achieve a great gift or "boon." The hero must then decide whether to return to the ordinary world with this boon. If the hero does decide to return, the hero often faces challenges on the return journey. If the hero is successful in returning, the boon or gift may be used to improve the world. The stories of Osiris, Prometheus, Moses, Buddha, and Christ, for example, follow this structure very closely."

Does this sound like a perfect description of "The Matrix"? Absolutely. Does "The Third Eye" follow this pattern as well? Sure. Does this mean "The Matrix" is a copy of "The Third Eye"? Uh, no.

To me, the only strong similarity between the two that isn't a common staple of fiction in general is the fact that Icon is blinded and golden light comes from his eyes. Neo is blinded and sees machine energy as golden light. Neo's view of the machines as luminous beings of light ties into the spiritual metaphors of the movies. Zion (the body) is filmed with a blue tint. The Matrix (the mind) is filmed with a green tint. The Machine City (the spirit) is viewed by Neo as being made of light. After Neo, the messianic savior, brings the three together, the Matrix and Zion are no longer filmed with a tint to represent that the mind, body, and spirit are no longer separate. If you've no idea what I'm talking about, go here: "http://www.wylfing.net/essays/matrix_revolutions.html". Nevertheless, it is a striking similarity. Is it enough to claim copyright infringement? I don't think so, but that's just my opinion, not a legal analysis.

One other similarity of note is the idea of the characters projecting their consciousness separately from their bodies to battle the enemy. This is certainly nowhere near as widespread as the above examples, but neither is it unheard of, especially in computer/cyberspace oriented works. The theme of telepresence, human minds directly controlling artificial bodies, is common in science fiction and has been for decades. With the advent of powerful, widely available computers, especially with the continuing development of video games as an "alternate reality", the idea of cybernetically enhanced characters battling in computer-generated worlds has become commonplace as well. Ms. Stewart certainly did not come up with these ideas, nor can she lay exclusive claim to their use.

Ms. Stewart's claim of plagiarism by the Wachowski brothers hinges on the fact that she sent them a copy of her (unpublished) manuscript in 1986 in response to an ad requesting ideas for comic strips. She never heard from them, nor did she receive her manuscript back. When "The Matrix" was released, she saw similarities between the two scripts. I'm still unsure how she thinks the creators of "The Terminator" (released in 1984, so presumably written at *least* a couple of years prior) got a copy of her *unpublished* manuscript to steal from it. If she makes that connection clear in this book, I completely missed it.

Ms. Stewart gives the strong impression in this book and flatly states in several interviews outside of it that her work was "plagiarized" because she is a black woman. In several interviews she points out various black authors who were unable to get their work made into movies. In one interview she states (regarding "The Third Eye"): "You have to understand I am very subtle with the way I write, I work on the subliminal. When I write I don't want people to be able to tell my race or gender. Look at Octavia Butler the most famous black female science fiction writer they never put her work on the big screen." In another interview regarding "The Matrix", she states: "A lot of the White fans got the connection right away. The Matrix film makes sense that a Black woman would write that." Oh yes, that's the first thing I thought as I watched The Matrix: "This HAS to have been written by a black woman." Given that she mailed her manuscript to the Wachowskis, and never (to my knowledge) gives an explanation for how the creators of "The Terminator" got a copy, it seems unlikely to me that these people had any idea that she was black. Unless she included a snapshot of herself in the package, I seriously doubt they decided to "plagiarize" her work based on her race. To me, therefore, the race card is a cheap stunt and, in my mind at least, serves to weaken, rather than strengthen, her case. Even if she was plagiarized, race had nothing to do with it.

In reading the other reviews of this book, it seems that an inordinate number of reviewers claim personal friendship with Ms. Stewart; the consensus is that she is a very nice woman. I'm sure she is; however, how does that have anything to do with whether the Terminator/Matrix series is similar enough to "The Third Eye" to be copyright infringement? Similarly, I'm left scratching my head as to the intent of the reviewer claiming that the Wachowski brothers are "known transvestites." He is obviously referring to the rumor, denied by the Wachowskis, that Larry is a transvestite who is undergoing a sex change operation and likes to be called Lana. Aside from the fact that there has been no proof whatsoever offered to support this rumor, even if it is true, what in the world does this have to do with the Wachowskis possibly plagiarizing the Third Eye manuscript and this book in particular? Is it common knowledge that all transvestites are plagiarizers, and I just missed it? A couple of other reviewers point to the fact that the Wachowskis haven't had another movie with the success of the Matrix series as evidence that they obviously stole the work from Ms. Stewart. For one thing, the Matrix series is one of the highest grossing series of all time (IIRC, Star Wars is the only one that's higher). It's highly unlikely the Wachowski brothers will ever top the success of the Matrix, and it's unrealistic to expect them to. For another thing, this is hardly an effective strategy to argue Ms. Stewart's case (although it's a strategy she herself employs), as she has never published ANY other work in the 26 years since she roughed out (not published) this work, whereas the Wachowskis have completed numerous other endeavors. Again, this doesn't prove the Wachowskis didn't plagiarize, but arguing that they must have because they haven't since produced a similar work makes no sense when Ms. Stewart has thus far failed to produce a similar work to the Third Eye (or any work at all, for that matter).

4 out of 5 stars The Terminator and The Matrix are connected.......2007-08-22

I haven't read the book yet but if anyone watches the animatrix the First and Second renassaunce it tells the story of how the machines took over and ironically both terminator movies start off that way. Also if you watch the Matrix and Then the first Terminator I can see where Neo would be reborn (aka john conner character) in order to save the future. then the morpheus/ john conner's father character has to find neo(john conner) before the terminator(agent smith) does, before he changes the future.

the two movies are one. and i believe she wrote it. thats why james cameron didn't want no part of terminator 3

3 out of 5 stars A review of preceding reviews.......2007-08-20

I haven't read the book, and from the reviews, I can't decide whether to or not. The reviews seem fairly evenly split between the believers and non-believers in Ms. Stewart's claims, though both agree that her plot device of "the one" as a savior of humankind from slavery is echoed in The Matrix and Terminator trilogies. Interesting, though, that all reviewers looking to comment on the connection of 'The Third Eye' to the Matrix seem quite firm in their opinions, be they for or against the connection.

5 out of 5 stars Cori Harris (Lima , Ohio).......2007-07-11

I first spoke with Sophia Stewart about her work a year before I even read her book. Not only is she a very nice lady but the passion and detail in her voice made me a beleiver before reading ANYTHING! I've now had her book since April and I must say it is not only a masterpiece, but is the source of the "Matrix" and "Terminators". It is truly ahead of its time for something written in 1979. I cannot wait not only for her to be fully compensated, but for her next work! Keep up the good work Sophia and if you read this I WILL find and bring you what me and you talked about. your friend Cori.

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal and original work by a pioneer for the new century........2007-05-17

I enjoyed this book and totally agree that she is the original writer of the Matrix and Terminator films. She is like Lewis Latimore to Wachowski's
Alexander Graham Bell.Alexander Graham Bell gets credit and Lewis Latimore
,a black american, the original desiger of the telephone gets no credit or respect. She is like Imhotep to James Cameron's Hippocrates. In history,
hippocrates gets credit;however, imhotep, the black egyptian,is portrayed in
the mummy film as an evil man instead of the father of medicine. How can you denie the facts based on the copyrights in 1981 that she is not the
matrix and terminator creator? If Wachowskis or James Cameron is the creator of the movie, then why aren't they writing more sci-fi movies?
Why did the Wachowski's used Alan Moore's V for Vendetta and are working
on Speed Racers a cartoon of the 1970's? Because they are not the original
writers. Sophia Stewart has fullfilled prophecy of being the oracle and
architect of the matrix. You can just examine her name. According to the
Gnostic Bible or lost books, Sophia means wisdom and she was the creator
goddess of the first matrix. Until Wachowskis,Cameron, hurd,fx,and wbs who
symbolized Iadolboath, the jealous god, rebelled and stole from the Great mother to create the second watered down matrix and terminator to keep you
locked down into materialism. On the other hand, Sophia first blueprint
laid the foundation for the evolution of consciousness. In other words,
She wanted the masses of people to look for God with themselves. In essence, Sophia Stewart based on facts and prophecy is the originator
and creator of the matrix and terminator. Wachowskis and Cameron with the
two corporations must give all her money to her or Maat will serve Justice
one way or another.

Product Description

This book is not another Christian-teenage-girl “survival guide.” So Much More shows how Christian girls can wage war with the world and win. The Botkin sisters focus on how young women can rise above their God-hating culture and change it for the better. Today, countless young ladies face difficult problems and challenging questions. While many long for godly purpose in their lives, their bewilderment mounts when they observe broken homes, distant fathers, overwhelmed mothers, degrading college courses, and a lack of spiritual guidance — both at home and at church. As hope for security and stability fades, it is no wonder that many young ladies feel orphaned, unprotected, and without hope for their futures. Within the pages of this book, discover practical, biblical solutions for the young woman who wants to do so much more than just “survive” in a savagely feministic, anti-Christian culture. Find the answers a girl is not likely to get from her church, her peers, or her culture.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed Our Family Forever!.......2007-09-04

Let me say, as a mom reared in a non-Christian home in the 70's and a college grad. - I had worldly expectations for my own children. I bought this book, unread (because I trust everything Doug Phillips endorses), and gave it to my daughter for a Christmas present. She read it, prayed about it and approached me with her newfound convictions that staying home and serving her father's vision until marriage-if that should happen-was the best way for her to glorify God after high school. It took me some time - I mean, my daughter is so gifted! But as I read the Botkin sisters offering of their hearts to us, I, too, was changed. Now my daughter and I are strong-standing advocates of biblical womanhood against a very strong tide of feminism within and without our families. We praise God for the renewed family vision this book has given - it put our desires to serve and glorify God and focused them into a practical, doable, daily-life-walk reality. Even my expectations for my son changed and we have been able to discuss what he should be looking for in a future wife's mindset and heart-posture. I praise God for the clarity of God-glorifying purpose and conviction that the Botkin sisters were able to biblically espouse in this book. May women's hearts to live out biblical womanhood gloriously grow as this book gains ground!

We would like to thank the Botkin Ladies for spending so much time and energy to write this book as an inspiration to young ladies! Every other week, we get together with our sisters in Christ to read the book "So Much More". While we do this, we craft and pursue profitable projects (as one of the mothers reads to us). We are learning so much! One of the moms challenged us to follow the Botkin girls' advice and ask our fathers about how we can help him fulfill his vision. "So Much More" has encouraged us to cultivate a deeper, closer relationship with our fathers. We are enjoying this learning experience and are looking forward to reading more from this encouraging book! We would highly recommend "So Much More" to any young ladies who are preparing to be godly wives, helpers, and mothers.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-08-30

This is one the most thought provoking book I have read in years. It has made me reevaluate how, if I had children, I would like my daughters to be raised. I do not agree with everything in the book, but the Botkins sisters do an excellent job of spelling what they believe and why. There is no artful attempts at deception, which I appreciated. I would love to read anything they write in the future.

It is well worth the read!!

5 out of 5 stars College-Age Daughter's Perspective.......2007-08-30

"So Much More" is a stirring treatise for a return back to the biblical model of family life. These are intelligent, well-educated,articulate young women advocating (from sound biblical standpoints) a harmonious household. "So Much More" shows young ladies how they can best turn their God-given abilities in a God-ordained direction.

The Botkin sisters are daring enough to raise some of the hardest questions single Christian women face (covering subjects from missions to submission, to college) and answer them gracefully and biblically. The timless question these young women ask is :if we sow habits of unprotected independence and uninhibited selfishness during those years between childhood and marriage, how will we -and our families, both now and future -reap the benefits of unity and submission that the Bible commands of women?

"So Much More" advocates -above all else -being useful, content, and Christ exalting in the sphere of influence in which the Lord has placed us. No, not every single Christian woman is promised a husband, but these girls show us -with painstaking detail and clarity - that -wife or not -the Bible is not silent on our God-ordained mission in life.

This book is a wake-up call for the young Christian women of America to rally their God-given strengths and abilities and to use them in a way that will impact this world for Christ -these ladies dare to ask the questions that we ourselves often fail answer, and in doing so, they fulfill their promise of offering us so much more.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman's Purpose in Life..........2007-08-30

This is a thought provoking book that is not for the faint of heart. It will require strength of purpose, a willingness to be challenged and a character that isn't easily driven by popular lifestyle choices.

Different ideas shouldn't be threatening simply because it challenges some of our cultural assumptions. The chapters on the influence Karl Marx had on feminist thinking are a real eye-opener and a definite must-read for all women (and men). This book isn't anti-education but presents the idea that college isn't the only way to educate and produce intelligent, responsible citizens. Nor is it the optimum way to develop character and spiritual integrity in our youth.

The point is not to smother young women but rather to help them see that there is so much more for them in this life than constantly running after men in an attempt to emulate them. Rather than being a book that focuses simply on feminine submission, this book is exploring the purpose of a woman's life from the point of view of Genesis 1.

The tone of the book is respectful and makes no demands for absolute agreement. As an older woman who is responsible for teaching younger women, I would recommend this book for any intelligent, thinking young lady who is willing to wrestle with new and different but not unbiblical ideas. I would also recommend it for those young ladies who are already convinced but need encouragement in following a counter-culture lifestyle.

3 out of 5 stars Dog Training Lite, B+ : Understanding Your Dog's Instincts, D-.......2007-01-26

I'd been hearing good things about Sophia Yin for a while, and since I like to keep up with new trainers who've got innovative ideas, I thought I'd give this book a look-see. Sad to say, I was more than a bit disappointed. Before I go further, I'm an author myself, so I don't want anyone to NOT buy this book based on my review. It's actually a fun, easy to read manual, giving the reader the basic highlights to the methods used by "modern, positive" trainers. I loved the clever, nicely drawn illustrations. The writing is clear and concise. And, as with most "positive" training manuals, if you follow the methods carefully you probably won't screw your dog up too much, at least not like you would by following the advice in books by the Monks of New Skete, or Cesar Millan. I call the kind of approach Yin uses "dog training lite", and give HOW TO BEHAVE SO YOUR DOG BEHAVES a B+ in that arena.

Here's my main criticism: dogs have deep, instinctive needs that Yin and most "positive reinforcement" based trainers don't understand. Their philosophy, and Yin's, is that play is just another way of rewarding good behavior. That's okay, there's nothing wrong with that, but Yin doesn't seem to understand that there's actually a lot more to play than mere positive reinforcement. It's the basis for all learning in dogs, because even though they no longer need to hunt for a living, their instincts still make them need to behave as if they did. That's why most of the games dogs play involve some aspect of their prey drive.

Here's Yin's view: "Both wolves and dogs have a prey drive, but the drive is more dangerous in the wolf. Thus,...tripping and squealing in the presence of a wolf could trigger an attack."

Perhaps it would trigger an attack, but it WOULDN'T trigger the prey drive. What she's describing is more of a fear-based reflex than a predatory motor pattern. And by the way, a dog's prey drive--if not given a proper outlet through play--is actually a lot more dangerous than the wolf's prey drive could ever be. In a later chapter Yin almost says as much, in that she tells us that the prey drive is what causes dogs to chase and bite children, which is partially true. But Yin neglects to mention, or even consider, that the prey drive is also what causes dogs to want to heel, and stay, and come when called. In fact, almost all obedience behaviors have their origins in the predatory motor patterns of wild wolves. Even the very act of obedience is directly related to the way wolves hunt together in a spirit of group harmony and cooperation.

Which brings up another problem: Yin perpetuates the outmoded view that canine social behavior centers around conflicts over who's alpha and who's not. This idea, which has now been disproven, was based on studies done in the 1930s and 40s on wolves living under the stress of captivity. Wild wolves don't form hierarchies. So what we've been taught were "dominant and submissive" behaviors are based on stress, and are not part of a dog's natural social instincts. Yet in HOW TO BEHAVE SO YOUR DOG BEHAVES, Yin frequently refers to dogs wanting to "wear the pants in the family", and has a whole chapter on "Dominance Aggression: A Struggle for Status", making her no different philosophically in this one regard than the Monks & Cesar Millan!

I DO give Dr. Yin points for printing "The Misbehavior of Organisms", a 1961 article from AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGIST, which details some conditioning failures where a group of various species were taught to push a button to get food, but ultimately preferred producing instinctive food-related behaviors even though those behaviors weren't reinforced. In fact, an experiment with a group of pigs had to be stopped or the animals would've starved to death! As a result, the authors of the study, Keller and Marian Breland (now Marian Bailey), wrote, "There are definite weaknesses in the philosophy underlying these techniques." There still are; instincts still trump conditioning, as any dog owner who's tried to lure his dog away from chasing squirrels or the neighbor's cat could tell you.

I don't mean to be too hard on Yin personally. I gave the book 3 stars, and I wish her well. At least her techniques don't usually CREATE behavioral problems like the Monks and Cesar's do (though clicker training has been shown to cause hyper-anxiety, and to increase scavenging and counter-surfing problems in some dogs). And as I said, this is a great version of a "dog training lite" manual. I just think that Yin needs a better understanding of the power of play, and what your dog's prey drive is really all about.

5 out of 5 stars best dog training book in my library.......2007-01-24

This is hands down the best book on training dogs I have read. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 6. Although I would have preferred actual pictures to the drawings, the drawings are entertaining and effectively illustrate the points being made. Her techniques are kind to the dog, easy to follow and have very effective results. I've begun using the techniques described in this book with a dog I recently adopted who had been badly abused in his prior life. He responds with enthusiasm, and really enjoys his lessons. I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a dog, whether they think their dog needs training or not!

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Concise and Intelligent.......2005-12-04

I found this book extremely useful in training dogs. The emphasis is on understanding dog behavior so that you can effectively communicate with them. I have seen vast improvements in the dogs I have employed her technique on and I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book on dog behavior and training!.......2005-11-19

Sophia Yin has one of the best approaches I have read to explaining how dog's learn and then applying this to effective, humane training techniques. She not only explains "how to" but "how come." I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has invited a dog to become part of the family.

5 out of 5 stars If you own a dog - get this book !! .......2005-11-17

"How to Behave" is packed with useful information on everything from how dogs learn to reading a dog's expression to what you can do if your dog barks too much. The material is presented in a style that is easy to understand and use to successfully train your dog. The exercises were very effective and easy to follow. Illustrations in the book are often funny and aid in conveying the large amount of information. I found the secton on reading and understanding a dog's posture and body signals especially valuable not only for my own dog but also when I meet unfamiliar ones. My only criticism is that if this book had been written a few years ago, my favorite dress shoes may not have become doggie chew toys.

A classic from the day it was published in 1991, Sophia: The Goddess of Wisdom is an intensely scholarly yet highly poetic work. Modern history (his story) may have buried the Great Goddess under suffocating layers of denial and revisionism, yet as we move deeper into the "sophianic millennium," scraping away the fallow ground of patriarchy, She emerges anew. Author Caitlin Matthews unveils the veiled Black Goddess (the primal manifestation of the Divine Feminine) in her many hiding places over the last several thousand years. Disempowered and hacked to pieces, she has survived in the major Western religions, philosophies, and mystery schools in many guises. With the aid of the author's trained and intuitive eye, the reader tracks Her faint footsteps through the long dark night of the feminine soul. Along with The White Goddess by Robert Graves, this book is a must-read for those who wish to understand why the Goddess fled, where She went, and how we can reaffirm Her as the giver of practical and spiritual wisdom--celebrating Her primacy in the manifestation of all things. --P. Randall Cohan

Book Description

Unfolds a realistic goddess theology based on meticulous scholarship.

I am so sorry I didn't read this book sooner. Caitlin Matthews has more information on Sofia than I could of hoped for. Bless her for sharing her knowledge. An excellent read, destined to be a classic if not already. Truly a book for all women. Thank you Caitlin Matthews.

5 out of 5 stars Food for Woman's Spiritual Journey.......2005-11-14

This book treats the Divine Feminine in various guises in many cultures. I found this book extremely uplifting and inspiring. The subject was treated in a profound manner, affording many deep spiritual insights. I was especially interested in what she had to say about the divine feminine in the Hebrew tradition. Ample annotations are given for further study.

1 out of 5 stars Oh well.......2004-02-05

I'll be blunt. I didn't care for this book. I bought it thinking it would delve into the subject of the Gnostic Sophia. Instead the author goes this way and that and hardly even mentions Her. I really think the title was misleading. As a sidenote, Lucifer is given a bad rap in this book and many concede that Lucifer plays an important part in later understandings of Gnosis.

5 out of 5 stars THE BRIDE OF GOD.......2001-01-06

The book is loaded with good information regarding the proper role of Sophia in relationship to God and to the earth. Filled to perfection of truths, that one would not have to study further. It is written very well, and very easily understood. It is remarkable how much truth she gathered with the world trying to suppress the female deity of the Godhead. All efforts to abolish the authority of Sophia were defeated upon the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. The writings of Jesus in the "Pistis Sophia", G.R.S.Mead, would never be accepted by churchs because they told the whole world "Jesus never wrote a book". Please read "She Who Is", Elizabeth Johnson, and "Prayers to She Who Is", William Cleary. Also, The Goddess Re-awakening" Shirley Nicholson. Of course, the writings at Qumran are in the book "The Nag Hammadi Library", James Robinson, don't skip the writing "Sophia of Jesus Christ" in this book. The woman Sophia is the Bride of God, only Bride.

    Book Description

With each new release of Stata, a comprehensive resource is needed to highlight the improvements as well as discuss the fundamentals of the software. Fulfilling this need, A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using Stata, Fourth Edition has been fully updated to provide an introduction to Stata version 9. This edition covers many new features of Stata, including a new command for mixed models and a new matrix language. Each chapter describes the analysis appropriate for a particular application, focusing on the medical, social, and behavioral fields. The authors begin each chapter with descriptions of the data and the statistical techniques to be used. The methods covered include descriptives, simple tests, variance analysis, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, generalized linear models, survival analysis, random effects models, and cluster analysis. The core of the book centers on how to use Stata to perform analyses and how to interpret the results. The chapters conclude with several exercises based on data sets from different disciplines. A concise guide to the latest version of Stata, A Handbook of Statistical Analyses Using Stata, Fourth Edition illustrates the benefits of using Stata to perform various statistical analyses for both data analysis courses and self-study.
